-Lurid Crime Tales-
Poland votes that WWII massacre by Ukraine was ‘genocide' (from July 2016)

[Euractiv] Poland’s right-wing dominated parliament on Friday (22 July) recognised as "genocide" a massacre of 100,000 Poles by Ukrainian nationalists seven decades ago, in a move that quickly drew criticism from Kyiv.

"The victims of the crime committed in the 1940s by Ukrainian nationalists were not duly commemorated, and the mass murder was not defined as genocide in accordance with the historical truth," said a resolution adopted by 432 lawmakers in the 460-seat parliament.

Ukraine has refused to recognise the crime as genocide and its President Petro Poroshenko on Friday to expressed his "regret" over the Polish move, warning it could be used against his crisis-hit country.

Between 1942 and 1945, members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) hacked Polish victims to death and drowned women, children and the elderly in wells in the Volhynia region of what is now northwest Ukraine.

The UPA’s main objective was to win Ukraine’s independence by ousting Nazi and later Soviet occupiers and to clear Poles from territories that were historically Ukrainian land.

The killing provoked bloody reprisals by Polish partisans grouped in the anti-Nazi and anti-Soviet Home Army (AK). They killed 20,000 Ukrainians. Friday’s resolution also recognises these crimes saying: "Nor can one dismiss or downplay acts of Polish revenge on Ukrainian villages, during which civilian populations also perished."

It also "expresses parliament’s respect for and gratitude to Ukrainians who risked their lives to save Poles".

Poroshenko, meanwhile, invoking the teachings of late Polish-born pope John Paul II, called on people to "forgive and ask for forgiveness" while cooperating in order to "determine all the facts of this tragic page of our joint history".

The so-called Volhynia massacre was shrouded in silence during the communist era of 1945-1989, with regime authorities in Warsaw wanting to maintain ties with Ukraine, a Soviet republic until 1991.

But memory of the crime is etched deep in Polish national consciousness.

Ukraine’s EU membership?

Friday’s resolution reverses a 2013 decision by liberal lawmakers that stopped short of calling the massacre a genocide.

In 2013, the then governing liberals adopted a softer version of the resolution to keep relations with Ukraine amicable as it moved closer to the European Union.

The more cautious wording called the massacre "ethnic cleansing characterised by signs of genocide".

John Boston: More illegal Biden documents found
Satire. At least I think so.
[The Signal] Recent discoveries at several hundred Santa Clarita Valley homes, businesses and enterprises of more illegal Joe Biden documents have shocked the nation and may lead to the president’s impeachment.

On an hourly basis, hundreds of fresh boxes of either top-secret or criminal wrongdoing evidence have surfaced from when Mr. Biden was the nation’s alleged vice president. Scooping the nation’s asleep-at-the-wheel media, The Mighty Signal became the first news outlet to learn the contents of Biden’s Boxes o’ Bloopers. Here now — just a small sampling of the damning evidence unearthed locally...

• THE "BIG GUY" FILE — 816 highly sensitive boxes were unearthed in the The Way Station cellar. They linked the CIA and Hunter Biden, with a plot to make the drug-crazed president’s son and failed beatnik, Hunter, secretary general of the United Nations. The cloven-hooved fornicator and coke-sniffing goof would extort billions from the member nations, based on their gross national product, then launder 10% of the ill-gotten gains back to "The Big Guy," whom The Signal just learned is former first lady — Michelle Obama.

• HAIR CLUB FOR JOE — More than 32,098 gallon-sized Baggies were discovered inside the SCV Corvette Club Community Garage. Each bag contained locks of teenage girls’ hair for Biden’s $14.8 billion National Teen Babe Hair Scent Bank, to help "fight crime, split ends, and to, well, just smell when the moon is full and the mood arises..." Also discovered, Biden’s rough draft of his autobiography, "Divorced Laker Girls I’d Like to Grope."

• BIDEN DELAWARE HOME VISITORS’ LOG — The laziest, most dishonest and dysfunctional president in American history, Biden has taken "Work From Home" to near-unemployed levels. Boxes found at local state Sen. Scott Wilk’s home (from where Scott works, too) showed the following visitors to the Delaware abode: George Soros (416 X); Satan (daily); Hunter’s drug dealer (daily); the Sinaloa Cartel (posing as a mariachi band); the Chinese Communist Party (posing as a Panda Express delivery team); and the four William S. Hart Union High School District trustees who voted to eliminate the Indian as the Hart High mascot, to name a few...

#3  Yet other batch, dating back over 14 years, giving proof that Joe Biden, an elitist politician for whom rules don't apply in real life, treats our nations secrets as cavalierly as he treats his family's corruption. Since he thinks the Senate will not support impeachment, he will try and just bluster through, spewing lies and imperial hubris.
If the Republicans had real courage, at the up-coming State of the Union, they would turn their backs on him when he he entered the chamber and sit mute the entire time he lied to the American people.

Elizabeth Holmes Tried To Flee Country After Conviction, Prosecutors Say
[ZH, et al.] Disgraced Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes attempted to flee the United States after her January 2022 fraud conviction, prosecutors said in a new court filing.

Holmes was convicted on three felony counts of wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Those charges sprang from her misleading of investors in the startup company's blood-testing technology. Her conviction capped her stunning downfall from darling of the media and powerful individuals to prison-bound felon.

In November, a federal judge sentenced Holmes to 11.25 years in prison, but she isn't behind bars yet. The judge ordered her to surrender herself to prison on April 27. The delay was meant to allow time for Holmes to deliver her second baby.

Now, her lawyers have asked the judge to let her remain free while her conviction appeal is adjudicated, and they also want him to ease restrictions on her travel.

Arguing against that request, government prosecutors told the judge that Holmes made "an attempt to flee the country shortly after she was convicted":

"The government became aware on January 23, 2022, that Defendant Holmes booked an international flight to Mexico departing on January 26, 2022, without a scheduled return trip. Only after the government raised this unauthorized flight with defense counsel was the trip canceled."

The government says her partner, William Evans, also bought a one-way ticket which he used on Jan 26, returning "approximately six weeks later...from a different continent."

Last January, Holmes' lawyer told prosecutors that she made the reservation before the verdict, intending to attend a friend's wedding. However, the verdict was handed down on Jan. 3 and prosecutors say the ticket was purchased Jan. 23.

Prosecutors noted that, beyond the suspicious ticket purchase, her flight risk is magnified by her continued access to significant financial resources:

"(Holmes) has lived on an estate for over a year where, based upon the monthly cash flow statement (Holmes) provided to the U.S. Probation Office, monthly expenses exceed $13,000," prosecutors wrote in the filing.
I'd even be cool with her and SBF sharing a prison cell so they can talk about their Dem connections, but I'm not so sure SBF even sees a court room.

Pentagon Fails Fifth Audit in a Row
[Blaze] Pentagon can't account for $220 billion in gov't property, fails fifth audit

The Pentagon failed its fifth audit in November after the agency could not prove expenditures for 61% of its $3.5 trillion in assets. To perform this year's overall audit of the DOD, which was expected to cost $218 million, the agency aggregated 27 separate audits conducted by approximately 1,600 auditors. According to Military.com, the auditors performed 220 in-person site visits and 750 virtual site visits.

The GAO's study reported that auditors first alerted the DOD in 2001 that the agency failed to keep track of its government-furnished property.

White House, Biden Tout ‘Results for the American People'
[EpochTimes] "Today marks two years since President Biden and Vice President [Kamala] Harris were sworn in to office," White House communications director Kate Bedingfield wrote in a statement. "In the past two years, we saw significant economic growth as the President built the most significant legislative record since the Johnson Administration. And due to the overwhelming popularity of the President’s economic agenda, the President had the best first midterm election results of any Democratic President in 60 years."

The memo claimed that Biden has lowered prices, noting that the cost of gas per gallon has decreased more than $1.60 compared to the previous year and insulin is now capped at $35 per month for seniors on Medicare.

Biden has created "millions of jobs" and 2021 and 2022 "were the two strongest years of job growth in history," the document explained.

"Nearly 11 million jobs have been created and 750,000 of them are manufacturing jobs. The unemployment rate is near a 50-year low and Black, Hispanic Americans and people with disabilities are experiencing record-low unemployment," the memo stated.

The White House also said that Biden "restored our global alliances and rallied partners across the world to stand up to Russian aggression and support Ukraine," brought together Democrats and Republicans "to pass the most sweeping gun safety law in nearly 30 years," confirmed judicial nominees that "are the most diverse in history," and "appointed the first Black woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson."

Biden is "leading a manufacturing boom," the White House added, citing around $33 billion in investments from private companies like $20 billion from Intel in Ohio, $100 billion from Micron in New York, and Hanwa Q CELLS announcing "the largest single solar investment in U.S. history in Georgia."

The "cheat sheet" ended with a claim that "MAGA Republicans in Congress Are Fighting for the Super-Wealthy."

#12  The Chief of Staff position tends to chew through people, as does Press Secretary. Klain would have been the Shot Caller on the document cleanup up. He did not coordinate that well. It was probably his idea to have the lawyers complete the Easter egg hunt so that they can play the attorney client privilege card. A more rational decision would have been to have someone with the proper security clearance do the cleanup and then use executive privilege. Technically the lawyers should now go to Leavenworth. Obviously, that’s not going to happen. Klain will be swapped with another flunky with unquestionable loyalty to Obama. There will be no swapping in a new VP as Michelle or any Obama surrogate will not make it by the Flying Monkeys in the House.

The 'king of tides' is coming: US west coast braces for intense flooding this weekend - and waters could increase to more than 10 FEET in some areas
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • A 'king of tides' is expected to hit the US west coast on Saturday

  • This is predicted to increase water levels by more than seven feet in California

  • Oregon could see tides increase by more than 10 feet on Saturday before noon

While these events are typical in the winter, this one follows recent rain storms that battered the west and is happening when a new moon hangs in the sky - and it will be the closest to Earth than it has in more than 1,000.

Meteorologist Kelley Bayern shared a stark warning on Twitter Friday: 'King tides arrive on the Oregon coast today and this weekend. Expect significantly higher tide levels [and] sneaker waves. Please use extra caution on the sand.'

Sneaker waves often happen in Northern California and Oregon. They are significantly larger than the previous waves and can happen without warning signs.

King tides, however, are predictable before they bring a flow of water from the marina to surrounding towns.

Matt Zaffino, chief meteorologist at KGW TV in Portland, Oregon, shared in a tweet: 'Extreme high and low tides this weekend courtesy of the new moon. Luckily, the sea state off the Oregon and Washington coasts will not be extreme.’

King tide is not a scientific name, but a catchy term from Australia to describe the year's highest high tides.

The National Weather Service issued a Flood Advisory for the Peninsula coast on Thursday due to the expected high tides. The advisory is in effect through Monday afternoon.

King tides already ravaged Seattle in December, which saw dozens of families forced to evacuate their homes in a South Park neighborhood. Homeowners reported seeing up to four feet of water flowing through their backyards after the event disappeared.

Along with the high tides, the king tides also bring low tides that uncover beaches and other locations that are usually submerged.

California is feeling the brunt of Mother Nature with devastating storms in recent weeks that brought 200 to 600 percent more rain than usual. The series of atmospheric rivers that hit the state has done an estimated $1 billion in damage, dumping an estimated 24 trillion gallons of water on the state since December and leaving 19 people dead.

Ron DeSantis bans advanced placement African American Studies course from Florida high schools because it 'lacks educational value'
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news] They were whining about this on NPR yesterday.
  • The Florida Department of Education claimed in a January 12 letter that an AP African American Studies course 'significantly lacks education value'

  • It also called the course 'unlawful' and historically inaccurate, but did not elaborate on why the Department thought so

  • Despite rejecting the African American history course, Florida currently offers AP courses in European, Japanese, German, Italian, and Spanish history

  • Part of the course focused on looking at discrimination through an intersectional lens, which was written by CRT advocate and legal scholar Kimberlé Crenshaw

  • Florida is one of several states that have banned public schools from teaching Critical Race Theory (CRT)

Picnic Ant Lady Claims Carrying Cash Is the Reason For Chicago Crime Epidemic
[Townhall] Chicago’s crime rate has skyrocketed under Democrat Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s wing, making the city one of the most dangerous places in the U.S.

However, rather than rethinking her soft-on-crime policies, Lightfoot blames the crisis on everything else.

Earlier this week, Lightfoot suggested street vendors stop using cash to stem Chicago’s crime problem.

During a mayoral debate with eight other opponents, Lightfoot offered so-called "solutions" to the issue.

"I heard a lot of rhetoric here, a lot of soundbites, but not a lot of concrete solutions on how we get the job done and make our residents and our workers safe. We’re doing it every single day," Lightfoot said, however, the city’s crime rate has yet to slow down.

"We have been in Little Village working with those street vendors, understanding what the nature of the crime is, making sure that we’re doing things in concert with them to help them, to make sure that their money is secure. Not use money, if at all possible, using other forms of transactions to carry themselves," the mayor continued to say.

The first three questions for Lightfoot centered around crime, in which she claimed the city’s homicide and shooting rates have gone down. However, one of her opponents, Community activist Ja'Mal Green, accused her of lying about the numbers.

"I'm trying to figure out — how do we continue to allow the mayor to lie about the numbers?" Green asked. "We are not down when it comes to before her administration started. The year before last, it was a 25-year high. So of course, we're going to have some sort of a decrease. We've had 700-plus homicides for three years in a row under the mayor, and she has not been connected to the neighborhoods or to what's going on on the ground."

Davos Plans For The Next Pandemic - Suggests National Digital Infrastructures To Track Vaccination
[ZERO] The World Economic Forum's Davos discussions often require some "reading between the lines" to understand what is really being said by the globalist participants, but not much interpretation is needed these days. Ever since the pandemic event along with the lockdowns and the attempts to introduce vaccine passports, establishment representatives have been far more open about their agenda and their intentions for the future.

After all, it was Klaus Schwab that called covid a "rare but narrow window of opportunity" to implement the "Great Reset" of the current economic and political order. The past few years have shown that the Davos crowd still clings to the fading pandemic panic as the "good old days" when they could have had anything they wanted, including total centralization.

The globalists continue to refuse to address their many failures, but panels like the following say it all - They realize that the truth has hit the mainstream and far too many people are now questioning the validity of the restrictions, mandates, masks and the mRNA vaccines. All of these measures have proven to be mostly useless in preventing viral spread, and now the negative side effects of the vaccines are being admitted to, at least to a point. All in all, the pandemic was not the golden opportunity that Klaus Schwab and the WEF expected.

Their hopes and dreams now turn to a future pandemic, perhaps one with a far higher death rate that creates more exploitable public fear.

World court receives UN request for opinion on Israeli ‘occupation’ and ‘annexation’
[IsraelTimes] UN secretary-general says office will gather ’dossier’ on relevant materials for the court, following General Assembly vote asking for advisory opinion on the conflict

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) announced on Friday that it has officially received the request made three weeks ago by the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...
General Assembly (UNGA) asking the court to weigh in on the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict, Israeli "annexation" and the "legal status of the occupation."

The court said in a short statement Friday that the request was issued in a letter dated January 17, 2023 by UN Secretary-General António Guterres
...Portuguese politician and diplomat, ninth Secretary-General of the United Nations. Previously, he was the UN High Commissioner for Refugees between 2005 and 2015. He was the Prime Minister of Portugal from 1995 to 2002 and was the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party from 1992 to 2002. He served as President of the Socialist International from 1999 to 2005. In both a 2012 and 2014 poll, the Portuguese public ranked him as the best Prime Minister of the previous 30 years...
and was received on Thursday. The document, which cited sections of the resolution, offered no details on the court’s next steps.

The UN General Assembly passed a resolution late last month asking the court for an "advisory opinion," on Israel’s "prolonged occupation, settlement and annexation of Paleostinian territory." It also called for an investigation into Israeli measures "aimed at altering the demographic composition, character and status of the Holy City of Jerusalem" and charged that Israel has adopted "discriminatory legislation and measures."

The resolution — promoted by the Paleostinians and passed by a vote of 87 in favor, 26 against, with 53 abstentions — demanded the court weigh in on the conflict in accordance with international law and the UN charter. The vote came a month after the UN’s Fourth Committee passed a similar resolution, setting the stage for the General Assembly process.

In his letter this week, Guterres wrote that his office "will start to prepare a dossier containing a collection of all relevant documents" related to the questions posed in the resolution that "will be transmitted to the Court in due course."

Israel denounced the UNGA resolution, with Israeli envoy to the UN Gilad Erdan calling the vote a "moral stain" on the world body. He argued at the time that the vote delegitimizes and demonizes Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu slammed the UNGA over the resolution, accusing the global body of "distorting historical facts" and declaring that the Jewish people cannot be "an occupier" in its own land.

The ICJ, also known as the world court, is the top UN court for mediating disputes between countries. Its rulings are binding and influence public opinion but it has no mechanism for enforcement.
Well then.
The court is separate from the International Criminal Court, which is also in The Hague.

The court last issued an advisory opinion on the Israeli-Paleostinian conflict in 2004 when the General Assembly asked it to rule on the legality of the separation barrier. The court ruled that the separation barrier Israel built was "contrary to international law" and called on the country to immediately halt construction.

Israel has ignored the decision, arguing that the barrier was a security measure meant to prevent Paleostinian attackers from reaching Israeli cities.
And now countries all over the world are honouring the court’s decision by building security barriers of their own against malign invaders.
The Paleostinians have said the structure was an Israeli land grab because of its route through east Jerusalem and parts of the West Bank.

The UN has a long history of passing resolutions against Israel, which has accused the world body of bias, together with the US. Israel has also accused the Paleostinians, who have nonmember observer state status at the UN, of trying to use the world body to circumvent peace negotiations and impose a settlement.

#1  Hmm. Conquering, militarily occupying and annexing land. Isn't that why the world went to war with the Nazis?
Posted by: Herman Hapsburg8987 || 01/21/2023 2:35 Comments || Top||

#2  Hitler started it, and then wouldn’t stop.

Israel, on the other hand, was not the one who started the wars, was not the one outnumbered and threatened with extinction, but was the one who acquired land while driving out the multiple armies of the invaders in 1948, 1967, and 1973.

Also, you puling idiot, unlike Hitler, Israel spent the first 70 years of its existence trying to give the land back, asking only a peace treaty in exchange. Egypt got back most of the Sinai, including the oil wells and the developed resorts of Sharm el Sheikh — but they turned down the offer to get back the Gaza Strip; Jordan was offered the West Bank with its Palestinians, but refused — because nobody wants the Palestinians — taking only responsibility for the Temple Mount instead. Syria and Lebanon refused the offer, so they’re still at war with Israel, and the Palestinians have refused multiple offers, year after year after year.

You’ve been told all this before, but you cover your ears and shout so that you don’t have to process information that would destroy your excuse to hate.

How utterly, predictably boring.

As predictably boring as all this posturing around the World Court, whose decision is not binding and which no one will enforce, though the Palestinians will raise some funds off it.

Drones target U.S. outpost in Syria

Three drones targeted a U.S. base in Syria's Al-Tanf region on Friday but no American troops were injured, the U.S. military said in a statement.

U.S. Central Command said two of the drones were shot down while the remaining drone hit the compound, injuring two members of the Syrian Free Army forces.

The al-Tanf military base in southeastern Syria is situated in the border triangle between Jordan, Iraq, and Syria, the CENTCOM said. It was established by the US-led Global Coalition in the context of its war against the ISIS.
An Nahar adds:
It was not clear who was behind the drone attack, but Iran-backed fighters in the region have carried out such operations in the past. Sleeper cells of the Islamic State group are also active in the area.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Florida college football star, female accomplice busted for violent home invasion at luxury Orlando highrise
[NYPOST] A Florida college football player and a female accomplice have been arrested in connection with a violent mostly peaceful home invasion inside a luxury Orlando condo earlier this month, according to police.

Justin Hodges, a defensive back with the University of Central Florida, was one of several men who barged into a 28th-floor apartment with guns on Jan. 9, severely beat an occupant and robbed the residence before fleeing, officials said.

The Fort Lauderdale native has since been dismissed from the football team, according to Fox 35.

Orlando cops said Hodges is a friend of a female suspect in the case, Nevaeh Mosher, who once dated the victim.

Mosher, who was also arrested, allegedly gave Hodges instructions on entering the building before he and two other suspects carried out the home invasion robbery.

Those other two assailants remain on the lam.

The group — which was captured on surveillance video in the building — discarded some of their clothing on a lower floor in an attempt to evade detection, cops said.

One of the items, according to police, was a piece of clothing belonging to Hodges with the UCF insignia on it.

Hodges and Mosher were arrested Thursday morning and remain behind bars.

The gridiron star admitted being involved in the crime but minimized his role, telling detectives that he was hoping to retrieve some of Mosher’s belongings from inside the apartment.

The junior said a gun used in the assault belonged to his girlfriend, and that he gave the firearm to an accomplice to use during the heist.

Trio of suicide drones strike US base in Syria, wounding 2
[An Nahar] Three suicide drones attacked a U.S. base in eastern Syria on Friday, wounding two Syrian opposition fighters, the U.S. military said. No Americans were hurt in the attack.

It was not clear who was behind the drone attack, but Iran-backed fighters in the region have carried out such operations in the past. Sleeper cells of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group are also active in the area.

Two of the drones were shot down and the third struck the compound at al-Tanf base where the borders of Syria, Iraq and Jordan meet, the U.S. military said.

The military said the drone that struck the building maimed two members of the Syrian Free Army, who received medical treatment.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an opposition war monitor, said the attack was likely carried out by Iran-backed fighters who are deployed in different parts of war-torn Syria.

"Attacks of this kind are unacceptable — they place our troops and our partners at risk and jeopardize the fight against ISIS," U.S. military front man Joe Buccino said, using an acronym for the Islamic State group.

There are roughly 900 U.S. troops in Syria, including in the north and the farther south and east of the country.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ukrainian Perspective: Invasion of Ukraine: January 20th, 2023
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Korrespondent] 22:41 The United States advises Ukraine to withdraw troops from Bakhmut, AFP reports, citing a high-ranking American official. According to Washington, the increased attention of the Ukrainian command to holding the city hinders preparations for the expected spring counteroffensive. In addition, in the case of Bakhmut, time is on the side of Russia, which has more resources, but the capture of the city will not give it anything, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine will retreat to prepared positions.

Washington believes that Ukraine should consider "exchanging" Bakhmut for the training of its troops, since the Armed Forces of Ukraine may not have enough resources to both conduct military operations in the city and prepare for an offensive in the south of the country.

22:02 Portugal will send Ukraine a second batch of 14 M113 armored personnel carriers, eight powerful generators, 120-mm ammunition and two tons of medical and sanitary equipment, the country's Defense Ministry said following the Ramstein meeting.

21:49 In German Ramstein on Friday, January 20, the eighth meeting of the Contact Group on the Defense of Ukraine was held. The meeting participants - and these are the heads of defense departments of more than 50 countries - did not agree on the supply of Leopard tanks to Kyiv. It is expected that a final decision on this matter may be made later. Details about the results of the meeting can be found in the material Disappointment from Berlin and US promises .

21:43 Reznikov praised the meeting in Ramstein: "The eighth meeting in Ramstein is over. It was a great meeting of friends. The free world supports Ukraine and applauds the brave Ukrainian soldiers and our courageous people. The Ukrainian army will receive more weapons and ammunition. We will win. There will be evil defeated."

21:17 The Russians have made progress in the area of Soledar and Bakhmut, but this will not change the strategic situation, said White House national security adviser John Kirby.

21:04 The Netherlands will supply Ukraine with two Patriot SAM launchers and missiles for them, Defense Minister Kaisa Ollongren said.

20:59 The United States has recognized PMC Wagner as a transnational criminal organization, the White House said. The US Treasury Department has been instructed to impose additional sanctions against Prigozhin's company.

20:20 Poland plans to arm and train Ukrainian soldiers on a brigade scale by the end of March, Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak said following a meeting at the Ramstein base. He clarified that we are talking about a tank brigade, which will be armed with infantry fighting vehicles and T-72 tanks. "If we add to this the contract concluded with the Ukrainian authorities by the Huta Stalowa Wola company for the supply of Krab artillery pieces, then we are dealing with a holistic project to support Ukraine," the minister added.

Blaszczak also said that he had held talks with representatives of 15 countries that use Leopard tanks: “No decisions have been made on this issue. We have further meetings planned. Probably now in the videoconferencing format. I am convinced that this coalition building will be successful, as well as the transfer of the Patriot system to Ukraine."

20:12 Senior US officials are advising Ukraine to refrain from launching a major offensive against Russian troops until the last shipments of US weapons have been received and military personnel have been trained, Reuters reports. A U.S. official, speaking to a small group of reporters on condition of anonymity, said Washington was "strongly sticking to its decision not to supply Abrams tanks to Ukraine at this time" amid disagreements with Germany over the tanks.

20:08 Zelensky met with US Senators Lindsey Graham, Richard Blumenthal and Sheldon Whitehouse, who are on a visit to Kiev, the presidential press service reported.

19:57 Zelensky said in an evening video message that it is not always possible to publicly announce Rammstein's agreements: "This is a closed discussion - and it should be so. In general, we can summarize that today's Ramstein will strengthen our stability. Partners are principled in their attitude - they will support "Ukraine, as much as is necessary for our victory. Yes, we still have to fight for the supply of modern tanks, but every day we make it clearer that there is no alternative to the fact that a decision on tanks must be made."

19:25 The British government is considering the option of transferring long-range missiles similar to the American ATACMS to Ukraine, CNN reports.

19:06 US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin announced the supply of additional air defense systems to Ukraine. He recalled that several countries have already offered to help strengthen Ukrainian air defense, including France, Britain and Germany, which offered to transfer the Patriot battery. "The Netherlands is also donating Patriot missiles and launchers and will provide training on the system. In addition, Canada has acquired the NASAMS system and related equipment for Ukraine," Austin added.

18:53 The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, said that the new package of assistance to Ukraine from the United States, together with packages from other countries, is the equivalent of two brigades: "Together with other assistance packages, this is an increase in artillery potential, maneuverability. This is the equivalent of two brigades or six mechanized battalions, ten motorized battalions and four artillery battalions. This aid package, together with packages from allies, demonstrates our determination to protect the Ukrainian population."

18:39 The head of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Mark Milley, said that this year it will be difficult to force Russian troops out of the entire occupied territory of Ukraine by military means. "That doesn't mean it can't happen, but it will be very difficult," he added. At the same time, Milli noted that in Ukraine, the stabilization of the front can definitely take place, it is also possible to achieve a significant tactical or operational level of offensive in order to liberate as much territory as possible.

According to Milley, Russia was able to mobilize up to 250,000 people for the war in Ukraine out of 300,000. At the same time, Russian losses significantly exceed 100,000 people, he added.

18:28 US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said following a meeting in the Ramstein format that Ukraine's Western allies have a "window of opportunity until spring" before the UAF launches a counteroffensive. He also said that American Abrams tanks would not be transferred to Ukraine yet, but many EU countries agreed to supply Leopard.

18:23 The enemy is conducting offensive operations in the Bakhmut, Avdeevsky and Zaporozhye directions, increasing the intensity of the use of aviation. It is defending in the Kupyansky, Limansky, Novopavlovsky and Kherson directions, the General Staff reported in the evening summary.

The invaders are stepping up security measures in the Zaporozhye region. In particular, in Melitopol, a ban was announced on crossing checkpoints around the settlement from March 1 without special passes, which can be obtained at the so-called commandant's office only after providing one's personal data.

Mobilization continues in the Luhansk region. So, in the occupation administration of Alchevsk, regular lists have been prepared to make up for losses in the manpower of the Russian military, including at the expense of employees of the so-called "Ministry of Emergency Situations".

18:17 The Ministry of Reintegration, by its order, excluded the city of Kiev from the list of territories of possible hostilities. The corresponding order was issued in agreement with the Ministry of Defense on the proposals of the relevant regional, Kyiv city military administrations.

18:06 Stoltenberg said that the new military assistance will allow Ukraine to launch an offensive: "Hundreds of new infantry fighting vehicles, armored vehicles and battle tanks are now provided to Ukraine, this will be of great importance for the country ... This support will allow Ukrainians not only to defend themselves against new offensives Russia, but also launch their own offensive actions to retake the territory."

17:45 During the war, 127 DTEK employees were killed, said Dmitry Sakharuk, executive director of the company. 319 workers were injured, 46 were missing, and four more were captured.

17:37 German intelligence is concerned about the daily triple-digit losses of Ukraine in the battles for Bakhmut, Spiegel writes, citing data from a secret meeting that took place this week in the Bundestag. Its participants also noted that the fall of Bakhmut would have consequences for the entire line of Ukrainian defense. Russia is now abandoning soldiers like cannon fodder, since losses there do not play any role for her.

17:21 Erdogan had a telephone conversation with Zelensky. Repressions against Orthodoxy begin to go beyond the borders of Ukraine
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] For Moscow, repressions against Russian Orthodoxy in Ukraine are not only a purely religious problem, but also affect the prospects for a peaceful settlement in the country. In addition, protecting the rights of Ukrainian believers can become a model for protecting the rights of believers around the world.

“There are a lot of people in Ukraine who understand what is happening and give the right assessment, ” Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Wednesday, January 18, at a meeting with veterans of the Great Patriotic War, residents of besieged Leningrad and representatives of public patriotic associations.

"Especially after what the modern rulers of Ukraine began to do with the civilian population, with the creation of the so-called detachments — they recreated, in fact, the detachments that were used during the Second World War — and with the Russian Orthodox Church. All this will not be in vain for them, I have no doubts."

An unusually blunt statement for a normally reserved Russian president. First of all, with regard to the ecclesiastical issue, which has again become aggravated, as in the times of the Ruins, in Ukraine. Russian Orthodoxy and Russian statehood have gone hand in hand for centuries.

In the east, Russian monks moved forward, and the state followed them. To the west, where the Orthodox found themselves in the hostile environment of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the indifference of the Ottoman Patriarchs of Constantinople, who de jure ruled the Kyiv Metropolitanate, things came later, in the 17th century, when religious questions forced people who did not want to enter into conflict with Warsaw over political and political issues to react. military considerations of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich.

Born in the Tauride fonts of Chersonesos and Kyiv, Russian Orthodoxy was reunited in 1686, the canonical justification for which was the tomos on the transfer of the Kyiv Metropolis under the omophorion of the Moscow Patriarch from the Orthodox Church of Constantinople.

However, in 2018–2019, the Administration of the President of Ukraine intervened in these sacred issues. Petro Poroshenko, Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople and the administration of US President Donald Trump . The Phanar pretended that the Tomos of 1686 was of no importance, and together with the Poroshenko regime acted as the creator of a “remake” under the name of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, whose creation was blessed in Washington.

It would be easiest to reduce this intrigue to interchurch issues, canonical territories and the right to grant autocephaly. But for Moscow, this problem is existential in nature, as Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's permanent representative to this organization, spoke about during the January 17 meeting of the UN Security Council on the persecution of Orthodoxy organized by the Ukrainian authorities.

"At the same time, I would like to emphasize that Russia continues to proceed from the fact that the issues of protecting human rights are not within the competence of the Security Council and should be discussed in the relevant UN body," - said the Russian diplomat in his opening speech.

"On the agenda of the Council today is not human rights as a separate topic, but the next provocative steps of the Kyiv regime, which put off the prospect of a peaceful settlement in the country. Surely many of you wondered why we convened this meeting, which focused on the internal situation in Ukraine. We emphasize that this is not about interference in the affairs of the Church and not about purely church affairs. The fact is that we are convinced that the processes taking place in Ukraine are directly related to international peace and security and directly affect the prospects for establishing peace in this country ."

Thus, the "Orthodox factor" acquires a geopolitical significance that determines the future of Ukraine. And not only her.

For the first time at a meeting of the UN Security Council, the floor was given to the Russian Orthodox hierarch, who was the chairman of the department for external church relations of the Moscow Patriarchate, Metropolitan Anthony.

And he began his speech with the following words: " At present, we are extremely concerned about flagrant violations of the universal and constitutional rights of Orthodox believers in Ukraine."

Moscow puts the main emphasis on the persecution of religious freedoms, which, with the connivance of the West, allows itself the Kyiv regime and its repressive apparatus. It is no longer a matter of some kind of inter-church proceedings, the authoritarian Ukrainian state puts pressure on believers, forcing them to switch to a “politically correct” confession. This is seen outside Ukraine as well.

"State terror is experiencing its peak literally in the last days," notes the Serbian Bishop of Bach Irinej .

An illustration is not only the blasphemous invasion of the police and “security officers” into the greatest shrine of Ukraine and the entire Russian Orthodox world, the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, but also the outlawing of the canonical Ukrainian Orthodox Church and the threat that, with God’s permission, “pro-European ” and the “democratically” oriented Ukrainian state will simply ban it, if not abolish it. It goes without saying that the virtuous representatives of democracy and human – including religious – rights and freedoms on both sides of the Atlantic are wisely silent .”

In their opinion, in Kyiv they defend their “values” and “ideals” chivalrously (!) In addition to the United States, Poland is also interested in suppressing Russian Orthodoxy in Ukraine, hoping, as in the times of the Commonwealth, to “intercept” believers and use them for their own purposes. Unfortunately, some European national Catholic Churches also contribute to these processes, turning a blind eye to the state nature of the persecution of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.

For Moscow, the repressions against Orthodoxy in Ukraine are beginning to go beyond that country alone. As Metropolitan Anthony noted in his speech, “The Russian Orthodox Church, both independently and in cooperation with other Orthodox Churches, the Catholic Church, Protestant denominations, representatives of the world’s traditional religions, takes all possible part in protecting the rights of believers all over the world, especially Christians .” This is an alternative to the Western approach, primarily the American one, which uses the topic of protecting religious freedoms in political interests.

The False Promise of Electric Cars
[National Review] ’The more the state ’plans,’" wrote Hayek, "the more difficult planning becomes for the individual." This may resonate with the driver of an electric vehicle (EV) who has pulled up at a charging station in the middle of nowhere, only to find it broken.

In January last year, Carlos Tavares, the CEO of Stellantis, the world’s fifth-largest carmaker (it was formed by the merger of Fiat Chrysler and Peugeot), described electrification as "a technology chosen by politicians" and said it was "imposed" on the auto sector. By contrast, the triumph of the internal-combustion engine (ICE) over a century ago was organic. Human ingenuity and the power of markets led to a product that swept almost everything else off the road. EVs (which first had a moment around 1900) were not banned, and neither was the horse. In due course, ICE horseless carriages for the Astors were followed by the Model T and its kin. The automotive age had truly arrived.

The surge in demand for EVs (albeit from a low base) in Europe and the U.S. could be seen as evidence that, with the assistance of some taxpayer cash and nudges from government, EV technology could flourish without state interventions to either close down or hobble its wicked rival. But some policy-makers, faced with what they claim (and some may even believe) is a climate "crisis," have clearly not been persuaded that EVs, for all their loudly touted wonders, should be relied on to overtake conventional autos. That has left coercion, and with it the opportunity to redesign much of everyday life in ways more in keeping with the standards of those who know best. The switch to EVs will lead, in the end, to a shrunken role for the car, a machine long resented by a certain type of authoritarian for the untidiness it creates, for the space it takes up, and for the autonomy it offers.

#2  A 2kW generator for charging an EV is like 'p*ssing in the wind', Skid. Might get you to the nearest crossroad...or not.

Most EVs average between 3 to 4 miles per kWh of charge (kWh = 1 hour at 1kW) and require a 30-amp to 40-amp 240-volt hookup.

#3  Much of the false comparison has to do with the sheer size of the country. When some rube says "Japan and South Korea have faster broadband than the US (not true, in any case) they are making a false comparison. The land mass of the US is such that expecting any infrastructure that serves a country the size of Japan or South Korea to apply to Texas, let alone all of CONUS is a bad joke. Now, people who never drive more than 15-20 miles a day have no concept of someone who drives hundreds of miles a day routinely. Much like Pauline Kael, they say "I don't know anybody who does that! Who even needs to do that?"

And you can't argue meaningfully with someone who is seeing the big picture through a drinking straw.

"The Cossacks, like their ancestors, stand in positions. We will not let anyone in here, no matter how they use their prohibited weapons. They won't come through here. That is why we are here," says Vitaly Kuznetsov, ataman of the Terek Cossack Army.

Somali army base in Galmudug state comes under Al-Shabaab attack: SF deputy chief and six soldier toes up, along with 100 turbans
[ShabelleNews] al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
has carried out a morning attack on Somalia’s military base in GALCAD, newly reclaimed Town in Galgaduud region.

Residents said they woke up to a series of explosions followed by sustained gunfire at the DANAB camp in the town before daybreak.

Several soldiers and the Deputy Chief of DANAB major Hassan Mohammed Osman (Hassan Tuure) who led the elite SNA brigade were killed in the attack which becomes the second deadliest base raid in a week.

Early this week, al-Shabaab raided a military outpost in Hawadley, Middle Shabelle region, where the turbans detonated explosives-filled vehicles. Colonel Abshir Shataqey, the leading commander of SNA’s 3rd battalion was among those who died in the dawn attack in Hawadley.

Al Shabaab increased attacks on army bases in the towns it lost to the government and allied clan militias who are playing a vital roles in the liberation efforts.

Somalia has been fighting to win the longest war against al-Shabaab since 2007, with the support of AU and US troops.

President Hassan Sheikh has recently announced that the first phase of the operation nears compleation point and he said the 2nd phase will soon start in Southwest State of Somalia.
Barely a week after the liberation of the strategic town of Gal'ad in central Somalia, the al-Shabaab forces of Evil waged an attack on Friday morning in the town, targeting members of the Somali National Army [SNA] who camped within the vicinity to restore order.

Earlier this week, Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohammed Nur confirmed capturing of Gal'ad and the neighboring Haradhere town in Somalia's Galmudug
...a semiautonomous region in central Somalia, bordering Puntland on the north. Galmudug is not trying to obtain international recognition as a separate nation, but rather considers itself autonomous within the larger Somali federalism, for what that's worth...
state 2 days ago, noting that the forces of Evil suffered casualties following intense gunfire exchanges with the Somali National Army.

According to the group's proxy media houses, the forces of Evil returned to the town on Friday morning where they opened fire randomly, killing several government troops. The forces of Evil did not give exact numbers of those killed but were quick to note that a number of military vehicles were seized.

The al-Shabaab usually target members of security forces in their Forward Operating Bases, innocent civilians, and senior government officials. The news about a fresh attack at Gal'ad town has since been independently verified, with reports now indicating that a top commander of the elite Danab Special Forces was killed.

Major Hassan Mohammed Osman alias Hasan Tuure was among the top officers who were coordinating attack on Gal'ad. He becomes the third high-ranking military officer to die in the hands of al-Shabaab in as many months, joining Jamal Ahmed, the Beledweyne's CID boss who was killed in Halgan Jan 16, and Col Abshir Shataqey the commander of SNA's 3rd battalion who was killed in Hawadley this week.

Tuure was the deputy DANAB commander and led several successful operations that saw the liberation of key areas from al-Shabaab, including Galcad, where he was killed today.

For the last couple of months, the government of Somalia has been actively pursuing the forces of Evil through the Somali National Army, the US Africa Command, the African Union

Transition Mission in Somalia [ATMIS], and the local militia. Hundreds of al-Shabaab gunnies have been killed in the process.

On Thursday, a military court in Somalia convicted Mohammed Abdinur Jirow alias Dr. Fanah of al-Shabaab membership and sentenced him to death for his role in deadly attacks in Mogadishu. He told the court he masqueraded as a neurologist and an army officer to cover his work with al-Shabaab according to audio that was played in court.

Mohammed Abdinur Jirow was said to be an agent w al-Shabaab’s explosions department; who used aliases - Mohammed Dhere, Khalid, and Mustaf Aato. "I covered the case of Ilkacase, an AS operative who worked as a college teacher as cover,' he said. Ilkacase was executed in November 2020.
And Al Ahram clarifies:
The information ministry said that a senior military commander was among those killed after the Islamist holy warriors stormed the camp in Galcad, a town in central Somalia about 375 kilometres (230 miles) north of the capital Mogadishu.

More than 100 fighters from the al-Qaeda affiliated group were killed, it added.

The information could not be independently verified.

"There was heavy fighting there in which the (jihadists) were defeated," the ministry said, adding that "the site is now under the full control of the Somali forces".

Al-Shabaab
...... Somalia's version of the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...

said it was behind the attack, claiming its fighters had overrun the camp and killed more than 150 soldiers.

"The Shabaab button men blasted two trucks loaded with explosives before face-to-face fighting started," Abdilahi Rage, a resident of Galcad, told AFP by telephone.

"They briefly managed to push back the troops out of the camp, but reinforcements came and they have retreated."

NEW PHASE OF OFFENSIVE
In a significant blow to al-Shabaab, the Somali National Army and local clan militias on Monday captured of the strategic Indian Ocean port town Haradhere as well as Galcad, both without a fight. Haradhere had been a key supply route for al-Shabaab for both people and goods after it seized the port in 2010, dislodging local militias and pirates.

In recent months, the army and the militias known as "Macawisley" have retaken chunks of territory in the central Galmudug

US Launches Private Refugee Sponsorship Prgram
This should be interesting.
[KhaamaPress] The U.S. State Department announced Thursday, 19 January, the creation of a new Welcome Corps program that will allow private sponsorship of refugees to help them resettle in the United States, read the statement.

The Welcome Corps, established with the help of Health and Human Services, will enable private citizens to help refugees arriving through the U.S. Refugee admission program.
Mandatory assignments are not seen as necessary at this time.
The state department said the program would build on America’s generosity of spirit by creating a durable program for Americans in communities nationwide to privately sponsor refugees from unstable countries, including Afghanistan, Ukraine and Venezuela
...a country in Central America that sits on an enormous pool of oil. Formerly the most prospereous country in the region, it became infested with Commies sniffing almost unlimited wealth. It turned out the wealth wasn't unlimited, the economy collapsed under the clownish Hugo Chavez, the murder rate exceeded places like Honduras and El Salvador. A significant proportion of the populace refugeed to Colombia and points south...
Blinken said, "Providing a haven and a new home for people fleeing war, violence, and persecution is one of America’s noblest traditions, dating back to our nation’s founding."

The program will start in two phases to identify, evaluate, and scale up the most successful elements of private sponsorship as an innovative, community-led resettlement model.

In the program’s first phase, private sponsors participating in the Welcome Corps will be matched with refugees whose cases are already approved for resettlement under the USRAP. The Department of State will facilitate matches between private sponsors and refugees arriving within the first six months of 2023.

In the program’s second phase, which will launch in mid-2023, private sponsors can identify refugees to refer to the USRAP for resettlement and support their identified refugees.

In the first year, the statement added that the program would mobilize more than 10,000 to step forward as private sponsors and offer a welcome hand to at least 5,000 refugees or more.

Leb: Parliament sit-in underway as more MPs support the protest
[An Nahar] A sit-in inside the parliament building was still underway Friday, with more politicians joining the two independent politicians who had announced they won't leave until Speaker Nabih Knobby Berri
...Speaker of the Lebanese parliament, head of the Amal Shiite party aligned with Hezbollah, a not very subtle sock puppet of the Medes and Persians...
holds an open-ended session to elect a new president.

MPs Melhem Khalaf and Najat Saliba of the Change parliamentary bloc had begun on Thursday the open-ended sit-in inside parliament to press for an end to the presidential deadlock.

The authorities locked the doors and cut off power but after nightfall, the sit-in was still underway.

"We slept here, and we hope that today will bring new hope to Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...In 2020 Hezbollah blew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate facility exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though. Trust them on that. And it ain't never coming to trial...
," said Saliba in a video posted on social media on Friday.

Change MPs Firas Hamdan, Cynthia Zarazir, Elias Jrade, Paula Yacoubian, Halima Kaakour, and Waddah al-Sadek and Kataeb MPs Sami Gmayyel and Elias Hankash visited Khalaf and Saliba in the evening, while journalists were not authorized to enter the building.

Members of the group posted videos showing them sitting in the dark against the light of their mobile phones, as Lebanon suffers from chronic electricity cuts of up to 23 hours a day.

The cash-strapped country for over two years has struggled with rampant power cuts. Today, households only receive about an hour of state electricity per day, with millions now relying on expensive private generator suppliers.

Khalaf on Thursday affirmed that he can easily stay in parliament even if authorities cut power off. "All Lebanese have no electricity," he said.

Parliament had convened Thursday for an 11th bid to elect a new president, but failed again to come up with a candidate.

"We will not leave," Khalaf told news hounds.

But it could be a very long wait.

The 2016 election of former president Michel Aoun
...president of Leb, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hizbullah...
followed a more than two-year vacancy at the presidential palace, as politicians made 45 failed attempt
...Curses! Foiled again!...
s to elect a new head of state.

Two residents of Chechnya convicted of non-information
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
Moslem names, but no indication whether the miscreants are jihadis or something else.
[KavkazUzel] A court in the Nadterechny district imposed fines on local residents Magomed Amaev and Usman Tutaev, finding them guilty of failing to inform the security forces about the plans of an acquaintance to create an illegal armed formation.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that criminal punishment for non-information was introduced in Russia in July 2016 after the signing of the "Yarovaya package" by the President. The corresponding article 205.6 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (failure to report a crime) provides for a fine of up to 100,000 rubles or up to a year of forced labor or imprisonment. Consideration of the amendments was accompanied by protests in Russia.

The Nadterechny District Court of Chechnya found two local residents, Usman Tutaev and Magomed Amaev, guilty of failing to report the crime. The court concluded that in January 2022, Tutaev and Amaev met with five acquaintances, one of whom announced his intention to create an illegal armed formation "in order to counter law enforcement agencies" and invited those present to join it.

According to investigators, Amaev and Tutaev "out of a misunderstood sense of camaraderie" did not inform the security forces about the plans of their acquaintance. The court fined Amaev and Tutaev 20,000 and 25,000 respectively. A criminal case has been initiated against their friend for creating an illegal armed group, Kavkaz.Realii* reported on the evening of January 19.

Magomed Amaev and Usman Tutaev were charged under Article 205.6 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, according to the cards of criminal cases posted on the court website. On January 18, the cards of the cases of Amaev and Tutaev were updated, they published the texts of the sentences to the defendants. The verdicts indicate that both defendants fully admitted their guilt and asked for sentences "in a special manner, without a trial."

The court considered as mitigating circumstances the confession of guilt and repentance for the deed, the presence of positive characteristics of both defendants and the absence of a criminal record, and Tutaev also had a minor child.

"The court considers it necessary to impose a punishment on the defendant within the limits of the sanctions provided for by Article 205.6 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, in the form of a fine," both verdicts say.

During the investigation, both Amaev and Tutaev were given a preventive measure in the form of "a written undertaking not to leave and proper behavior." Both were provided with legal assistance by court-appointed lawyers, according to the text of the verdicts.

Bankers make 'confessions' to European investigators as 'wildcard witness' emerges
[An Nahar] Lebanese bankers are giving testimonies that have started nearing the extent of "confessions" in the investigations that are being carried out in Lebanon Hezbollahstan

’s wealth, a media report said.

"The Lebanese investigation, from which the Europeans want documents for their own investigation, included preliminary information and significant inquiries about transfers made from Raja Salameh’s accounts to his brother Riad and close associates," the Nidaa al-Watan newspaper reported on Friday.

"The investigations have determined that $70 million were transferred from a bank owned by a defaulting political family," the daily added.

"The interrogation of al-Mawarid Bank CEO Marwan Kheireddine tackled those transfers as well as accounts for Raja Salameh whose deposits swelled from $15 million to $150 million between 1993 and 2019 before being withdrawn on the eve of the crisis," Nidaa al-Watan said.

One of the witnesses, the president of a well-known brokerage company, meanwhile "left for Luxembourg to be interrogated by Sherlocks there and it is possible that he might turn into a protected ’wildcard witness’ in return for valuable confessions related to Raja and Riad Salameh that might be in his possession," the newspaper added.

Informed sources meanwhile said that the Lebanese judiciary is relatively cooperating with the European Sherlocks, after reports said that "sanctions might be imposed on any judge who does not cooperate, in line with the U.N. anti-corruption treaty that Lebanon signed in 2008."

Isaev: Zombie Defense
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Most of the commentary by Russian military historian Alexey Isaev; Annotation by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin:

[ColonelCassad] Military historian Alexei Isaev on how, in the conditions of devastation and civil war, the Bolsheviks solved the issues of organizing the military industry.

Social cataclysms do not have the best effect on all spheres of public life, the defense industry is no exception. After the revolution of 1917, it would seem that the defense industry is not much needed.

From a formal point of view, in the fall of 1917, the stocks of weapons in the Russian army (both directly in the troops and in warehouses) were: approx. 18 thousand artillery pieces, up to 35 thousand machine guns, St. 5 million rifles, up to 33 million shells, approx. 2.1 billion rounds. Although in some works of the Soviet period these reserves were called "meager", everything is known in comparison. In the Red Army in April 1943, there were 53 thousand machine guns, 4.4 million rifles + ~ 250 thousand automatic ones. Comparable.

It would seem that for the Civil War enough for the eyes. Moreover, it is often argued that the old army fought in 1918-1922. The real picture is somewhat more complicated.

Firstly, who said that the legacy of the ancien regime went to the opponents in the Civil Code entirely? In the winter of 1917/18, as a result of a chain of events (the demobilization of the old army, the deep advance of the Austro-German troops, the formation of new states on the outskirts of the former empire, problems with the evacuation and storage of military property, etc.), a significant part of the weapons was lost.

As a result, by July 1918, when the flames of civil war flared up in the east and south of the country, the central Soviet leadership had at its disposal: 4,600d artillery. guns (including 1,600 faulty ones), 12,000 (600) machine guns, 1.5 million (143,000) rifles, approx. seven million shells, approx. 800 million rounds. What was the elephant, what was the elephant!

In the second half of 1918, the supply of the Red Army was released: approx. 2,000 artillery guns, ca. 2.5 million shells, 927,000 rifles, 8,100 machine guns, 563.3 million rounds of ammunition.

Now stocks have really become "meager". By the end of October 1918, there were serviceable property in the warehouses: 1,332 artillery tools, ca. five million shells, 252,000 rifles, 3,231 machine guns, 310.4 million cartridges.

At the beginning of January 1919, 53,000 rifles and 171 million cartridges remained in the warehouses of the Main Artillery Directorate (without the Tula factories). In addition, there were about 150,000 rifles of various foreign systems (mainly Japanese) and 265 million cartridges for them in the warehouses.

As early as March 1, 1918, V.I. Ulyanov-Lenin, in his article “On Business Grounds,” acted as a cap and wrote: “The best army, the most devoted to the cause of the revolution, people will be immediately exterminated by the enemy if they are not sufficiently armed, supplied with food, and trained.” Those. understanding was present at the very top and it was then that key decisions were made.

Secondly, a logical action like “Let's squeeze state-owned weapons back from those who left the front with rifles and machine guns” brought a very limited result. Requisitions from the population and organizations (according to the decree of the Council of People's Commissars of December 10, 1918) by March 9, 1919 brought R.-K.K.A. 145,000 serviceable and St. 3 thousand faulty rifles of various systems, 280 serviceable machine guns of various systems, 100 artillery pieces, about 7 million rounds of ammunition and other property. You don't roam.

Faced with the "meager" in key positions stocks left over from the anciennes regime, from May-June 1918, the Bolsheviks, simultaneously with the formation of the Red Army on a conscription basis, begin to make efforts to restore military production, which had fallen into decay due to the termination of participation in world war, and because of the general economic crisis.

All this was aggravated by the evacuation, in particular, of Petrograd. Chairman of the Extraordinary Commission for the Supply of the Red Army L.B. Krasin frankly admitted already in December 1918 ( http://militera.lib.ru/research/melia_aa/03.html):

"An even greater blow to industry [than its demobilization] was inflicted by the evacuation of Petrograd, which was decided suddenly ... and which actually amounted to almost complete destruction of Petrograd industry ...". Despite the fact that Petrograd was one of the key centers of military production of the Russian Empire.

As of August 1918, only one of the three weapons factories was operating, three of the nine artillery factories, one of the five cartridge factories, none of the three capsule factories, and two of the five gunpowder factories. The rest were either evacuated, or demobilized, or were in the hands of the enemy.

To increase the output of military products at the Tula factories, a third shift is being introduced. In addition, a bonus system of payment for overfulfillment of the plan and an increased rate of food supply are being introduced. Enthusiasm and the struggle for the happiness of mankind is good, but they knew how to stimulate the ruble today and now. All this begins to bring results quite quickly - by the end of the year. The output of cartridges increased from 5.2 million in August to 16.9 million in December 1918. The output of rifles increased from 11.2 thousand to 22.2 thousand, respectively.

The problem of shortage of qualified workers at enterprises is solved in various ways, including reservations. To attract, the instruction of the commission of the Defense Council of December 5, 1918 is used: "to notify the population as widely as possible that those working at cartridge and weapons factories are exempt from conscription into the army."

The following year, the central authorities repeatedly beat the hands of local trade union and military organizations in carrying out mobilizations at military factories, "because weapons and cartridges are most important" (from Lenin's telegram of August 26, 1919).

In addition, there was a practice of redistribution, the maneuver of the workforce from closing enterprises to those operating on a city, district, even country scale.

Of course, it could not do without the "whip". All defense enterprises were transferred to the category of militarized: the entire composition of workers and employees was declared mobilized, and unauthorized abandonment of work was equated with desertion. This, however, did not save workers from leaving in search of food, with which there were regular interruptions (in the Second World War, staff turnover was also a problem, if anything).

In total, in 1919, the defense industry of the Republic produced 460 thousand rifles, 6,300 machine guns, 357 million cartridges, 366 field guns. For 1920: 427,000 rifles, 4,500 machine guns, 411 million rounds of ammunition, 279 field guns.

Due to difficulties in organizing the production of new weapons, it was necessary to repair the old ones on a significant scale. In 1919, St. 500,000 rifles, St. 2,000 machine guns, approx. 800 guns. In 1920: ca. 400,000 rifles, 3,100 machine guns, 965 guns. Thus, the refurbishment was comparable to the annual output.

The most interesting topic is artillery shells, ammunition has always been expensive both in terms of raw materials and resources. Release of completely new shots in 1919–1920. amounted to about 200,000 kopecks. Basically, the arsenals were equipped from existing ready-made elements. Due to them and the available stocks, R.-K.K.A received 5.5 million shells during this period.

It can be said that if in artillery the Reds could mainly rely on the stocks of the Russian army, then in small arms and machine guns from the beginning of 1919 they had to rely only on current production.

This feature was noticed back in the 1920s by A.M. Volpe ( http://militera.lib.ru/science/volpe_am01/index.html ):

“... the civil war, unlike the world war, was not an “artillery” war. The Civil War was a machine-gun war. Her tactics were largely determined by this moment. The production of rifles and rifle cartridges was the "shverpunkt" of the military industry. The consumption of shells in the civil war was relatively small. So to speak, this was the "happiness" of the civil war. Who knows what tests our industry would have to endure if the need for shells was the same as during the world war.
Schwerpunkt: a German word which means center of gravity, the main thing.
We will answer comrade. Wolpe from the future: the industry would not have survived. I would run into tight spots. In the same alcohol, necessary for the production of pyroxylin gunpowder.

Who came up with all this? You will not believe. Vladimir Ilyich, who pointed out as early as the beginning of 1918 (when everything was just flaring up): "Stop the production of heavy shells and guns, make light field artillery, machine guns, rifles."

Just in case, I note: light field artillery is also armored trains.

Historians see the personalities of the era in context and wider than in a school textbook or even general works. Whether we like it or not, the decision in early 1918 to focus on light weapons was visionary. There and then. Invisible, yes. The one who makes such decisions on time wins. After listening to specialists or with your own mind, this is no longer so important.

Senior STC commander killed in Abyan province
by Emad Almarshahi

[HODHODYEMENNEWS] A senior military commander of the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC)’s militia was killed on Thursday in a bomb attack in Abyan province, south of Yemen.

Tribal sources said that an explosive device exploded and targeted a military vehicle carrying the commander Basheer al-Sha’ieri, while passing through Mudiyah district.

The sources explained that the explosion resulted in the death of Al-Sha’ieri and two of his companions.

This came a few hours after a similar explosion targeted Security Belt Forces commander Abdul Rahim al-Maker in the same district, killing him instantly and injuring six others.

The STC’s factions in Abyan are subjected to the largest attrition operation in recent times, in light of an almost daily series of explosions targeting military and security commanders, after their failure to control the province, for the fifth consecutive month since the start of their military operation in early September.

Biden admin launching pilot program that would allow Americans to sponsor refugees for $2,275 each
[BIZPACREVIEW] The Biden administration, the guys that caused the debacle in Afghanistan
...the pack of self-imagined masterminds of strategy and intrigue at the service of the Biden Crime Family and a grateful nation...
is set to launch a new pilot program on Thursday that will ostensibly allow groups of Americans to directly sponsor refugees from across the globe through the State Department program called the Welcome Corps.

The program permits groups of private American citizens to sponsor individuals through the Refugee Resettlement Program if they can cough up enough money to do so, pass background checks, and devise a plan on how to support them, according to Fox News Digital. It is similar to a model used in Canada.

The program was first reported by Rooters. Groups of at least five people will be required to raise a minimum of $2,275 per refugee. Then refugees can begin the process of going through background checks.

The program’s goal is to find sponsors for 5,000 refugees before the end of the current fiscal year in September. An announcement is expected on Thursday from the Biden administration.

A religious nonprofit stopped letting Texas house foster kids in a facility it owns this fall, days after two teenage girls staying there snuck out and were allegedly sexually assaulted. The girls were 13 and 16 when two men picked them up on the side of the road and allegedly assaulted them at a hotel in Burnet, roughly 14 miles north of Marble Falls, according to court documents. Burnet County, home to Marble Falls, is about an hour northwest of Austin.

Russia did it with Napoleon and Hitler...
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.

Commentary by Russian military journalist Boris Rozhin:

[ColonelCassad] "Russia is a big country, she's used to fighting to the end, she's used to almost losing and then rebuilding everything. She did it to Napoleon, she did it to Hitler. It would be absurd to think that Russia lost the war or that its military is incompetent. Therefore, it is necessary to continue arming Ukraine "(c) Borrell

Well, they were also offended by Lavrov, who told them the same in plain text.

They themselves put themselves in the successors of the work of Napoleon and Hitler. Therefore, of course, we must make every effort not to disgrace our ancestors and do with Ukraine and NATO what they already did with Napoleon and Hitler.

In 2023, expect more violence in Thailand’s insurgency-hit Deep South
[BenarNews] The separatist insurgency in the mainly Malay Moslem provinces of Thailand’s southern border region just entered its 20th year.

Violence in the Deep South inched upwards in 2022, a sign that frustration may be growing on the rebel side with the government’s lip service to the grinding of the peace processor.
...or it could be that the jihadis are returning to previous behaviours now that the Covid lockdown has petered out.
Overall, violence rose last year but remained quite low by historical standards, according to an open-source data set kept by this author. The numbers are conservative in that not every attack or incident of violence was reported in the media.

Blast claimed by separatist group derails train in Pakistan injuring at least 15

At least fifteen people were injured when a bomb blast derailed a passenger train in the southwestern Pakistani province of Balochistan on Friday, a provincial government official said.

The attack - which was claimed by the Baloch Liberation Army, a regional separatist group - derailed eight carriages including the locomotive, Deputy Commissioner Bolan Agha Samiullah told Reuters.

He said a rescue team was facing difficulties as the site was in a mountainous area.

The Baloch Liberation Army’s (BLA) stated aim is complete independence for Balochistan, an arid mountainous province that is Pakistan’s largest by territory but smallest by population.

Pakistani security forces have been the separatist militants’ main focus, through they have also targeted Chinese interests, given Beijing’s increasing economic footprint in the region.

Among China’s major projects in Balochistan is the port of Gwadar located near the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial oil shipping route in the Arabian Sea.

What is the national power grid and how resilient is it?
[FoxNews] Severe weather, targeted attacks threaten US power grid, but system is 'extremely reliable,' according to expert. /sarc
...so long as one is ok with occasional or regular power outages of minutes to weeks duration.
...But grid planners "really want to avoid any type of event that could result in a long duration outage," which could threaten peoples' health and safety, he added.

Transmission towers have become increasingly hardened against winds, he said. Some power lines are designed so that if a tree limb falls across them, the lines drop away from the pole rather than dragging down the entire pole which would take much longer to fix.

"Part of resiliency is making sure that we don't get those long duration outages by putting in systems that allow us to be able to recover quickly," he said.

The national power grid is actually made up of three loosely-connected regions. That's good news when it comes to resiliency because it means if there's a serious problem in the Western interconnection, the Eastern U.S. should be fine, Brooks said.

"An issue that starts to happen and hopefully would never actually cascade into a complete blackout, that wouldn't go beyond those individual grids," he said.

A diverse array of power sources is also key to grid resiliency, Brooks said. Solar power might perform well during the day, but the benefits vanish when the sun does, so other resources such as nuclear, gas or coal might pick up the slack.

"The key is making sure you understand how all of those perform in the context of those needs of the system," he said. "Resiliency, affordability, reliability, sustainability."

Shortly after taking office, President Biden committed to making the American economy "net-zero" by 2050. The administration paused new oil and natural gas leases on public lands, among other actions aimed at promoting "green" energy sources. A recent report from an energy watchdog found some utility companies have retired existing fossil fuel power generation before sufficient alternatives were in place, which could result in supply shortfalls.

The ambitious decarbonization goals change the way energy experts plan for the future.

"Our models basically show that in order to make that happen, the most economic pathways are for the electric grid to be used to help decarbonize the other energy sectors," Brooks said.

The electric sector currently fills about 20% of U.S. energy needs, but models show that figure rising as high as 60% by 2050 in order to meet the Biden administration's goals, Brooks said. That means electrifying transportation, industry, commercial operations and homes.

"The grid is going to only be increasingly important as we go forward," Brooks said. "We'll have to all continue to work together, to innovate, to invest to make sure that we have those resources that are available for the grid to provide for us as we need."

#1  It takes a week+ to reestablish power after a hurricane in places use to the weather event. That involves bringing in outside crews and teams from out of state. What happens when its widespread enough those teams are busy at home? It takes much longer. Public Utilities are not authorized by state commissioned to maintain 'fire departments' in large numbers because the cost gets passed to the consumers, who of course bitch about it.

Canada agrees to help repatriate 19 nationals from Rojava: Lawyer
[Rudaw] Canada has decided to help return 19 of its citizens who are being held in northeast Syria (Rojava) for alleged links to the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS), said their lawyer on Thursday.

Lawrence Greenspon, the lawyer of six Canadian women and 13 children, was cited by Canadian media on Thursday as saying that Ottawa has agreed to help repatriate these people from Rojava camps following a "mutually acceptable" agreement.

The details of the deal between the government and the lawyer have not been revealed due to security reasons, said Greenspon who added that the fate of the pending returnees remains unclear.

Canada detained two women in October after repatriating them from Rojava.

One of the women, Oumaima Chouay, was arrested upon her arrival at the Montreal-Trudeau airport and handed several terrorism-related charges, with the charges including "participation in activity of terrorist group" and "leaving Canada to participate in activity of terrorist group."

Google parent to lay off 12,000 workers
[NYPOST] Google’s parent company Alphabet announced that it will be laying off 12,000 workers — joining other tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon who said this week they would be handing out pink slips to a combined 28,000 people.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai circulated a memo to staffers at the Mountain View, Calif.-based search engine indicating that the layoffs — which amount to 6% of the company’s global workforce of 150,000 Googlers — would be implemented immediately for workers in the company’s US offices.
"We suggest you use our search engine to look for a job elsewhere. Win-win!"
Google employees in other countries whose jobs are on the chopping block will undergo a more lengthy termination process "due to local laws and practices," according to Pichai.

Axed workers will receive 16 weeks of severance pay in addition to two weeks for each additional year of service at Google, the CEO said.

"This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with," Pichai wrote in his memo. "I’m deeply sorry for that."

Pichai added: "The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here."

Five Duhok residents killed in southeast Turkey laid to rest
[Rudaw] The dead bodies of five members of two Duhok families who were killed in The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the decaying remnant of the Ottoman Empire...
’s Kurdish province of Mardin on Thursday were buried in their hometowns in Duhok province on Friday. Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has assured their relatives that the perpetrators will be held accountable.

Five people from two Duhok families visited the Kurdish province of Mardin in southeast Turkey (Northern Kurdistan) on Wednesday. CCTV footage, published by Ottoman Turkish media, shows that a vehicle was following the two families before they were all rubbed out on a highway.

One of the families, consisting of two people, visited Turkey for medical treatment while the other three people wanted to visit relatives in the country, Rudaw has learnt.

Some of the victims died at the incident scene while others succumbed to injuries at the hospital.

Haji Abdullah Salih, his wife Chiman Shahin, and his daughter Handren as well as Walida Haydar and Mala Ahmed Jalaladin were returned to Duhok province and laid to rest there on Friday.

The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday. Ottoman Turkish security forces arrested six suspects but later released two. The motives behind the incident remain unclear.

Ottoman Turkish media has published footage, recorded by CCTV and thermal cameras, purportedly showing how the perpetrators monitored the two families and killed them.

Mohammed Rashid is the relative of one of the victims. He told Rudaw on Friday that Ottoman Turkish authorities were initially not serious in the investigations but "after seeing that it is being taken seriously by the media and the [Kurdish] government they became faster [in the investigation]."

President Barzani spoke on the phone on Friday with both families, "ensuring them that the relevant authorities in Turkey are investigating it and they will continue until the criminals are referred to the court and punished," according to a statement from his office.

Hemin Mirany, chief of staff of Kurdistan Regional Government’s interior ministry, told Rudaw on Friday that they had "invited" Mehmet Mevlut Yakut, Ottoman Turkish consul general to Erbil, and handed him a complaint letter regarding the deadly shooting incident.

Over 60 Ottoman Turkish NGOs, unions, associations and officials in Mardin on Friday condemned the killing of the five Kurds in a joint statement.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief January 21, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • CLASHES IN KABUL’S 6TH POLICE DISTRICT – Explosions and gunfire were reported in Police District 6 of Kabul as Taliban forces fought with suspected ISIS-K terrorists. No reports of casualties have been received yet but the fighting lasted for over an hour and the Taliban have sealed the area off completely. Uncharacteristically, the Taliban have not made an announcement about the operation which suggests the ISIS-K cell may have initiated the fighting. Previous reporting (January 19th) had indicated that search operations had been reported in the neighborhood over the days leading up to the clash. No further information was available.

  • THE PASSPORT DIRECTORATE ANNOUNCED THE RESUMPTION OF OPERATIONS – A spokesman for the Passport Directorate announced that a full resumption of the application and issuance process had started yesterday. While we have only confirmed offices open in 7 Provinces, it is believed that all will soon begin working on the backlog.

  • INTERNATIONAL NGO REPRESENTATIVES CONCERNED THE WFP WILL COMPLY WITH TALIBAN DEMANDS – A US-based journal, Foreign Policy, has spoken with several of the leaders of humanitarian aid-focused NGOs that were operating in Afghanistan and they voiced concerns about a possible decision from the World Food Programme to force female aid workers to abide by Taliban dress codes. The chief complaint is that female workers will be demoralized by any forthcoming decision and may decide to abstain from work in protest.

CONFLICT TRACKER
Kabul: Taliban security forces engaged suspected ISIS-K militants in Police District 6 of Kabul. Explosions and heavy weapons were used in the fighting, No information about the clash has been released, and the area has been sealed shut by the Taliban.

NEXT 24 HOURS
  • FURTHER CLEARING OPERATIONS POSSIBLE IN KABUL – Due to the significant Taliban activity in the aftermath of fighting that erupted in Police District 6, at-risk Afghans are likely to see additional clearing operations in the city over the coming days. A source with the Police said that significant intelligence was gathered from the location of the fighting that has identified a second group in Kabul.

  • ADDITIONAL FORCES BEING SENT TO TAKHAR – A convoy of military vehicles is expected to depart for Takhar after officials there claimed that more NRF forces were in and around the city than had previously been thought. Approximately 20 trucks are expected to depart with an unknown number of Taliban security forces personnel aboard.

Russia Says There Is Evidence US Secretly Sponsoring Daesh in Afghanistan
Official Iranian news site quoting Russia. Take the probability that one of them is telling the truth and multiply it by the probability that the other is telling the truth to get the overall probability that the words are in any way true.
[FarsNews] There is evidence that the United States is trying to establish ties with the opponents of the current authorities of Afghanistan and secretly sponsor the ISIS (also known as ISIS or ISIS) terrorist organization, Russian special presidential envoy for Afghanistan Zamir Kabulov said on Friday.

"Yes, there is such data, they [the US authorities] do it not for good, but for harm, because they really want to avenge their shameful military-political defeat in Afghanistan and, in retaliation, they do everything so that peace is not established in this long-suffering land, but even worse is that, in addition to contacts with the armed opposition in Afghanistan, the Anglo-Saxons secretly sponsor the ISIS," Kabulov told Russian broadcaster, RIA Novosti reported.

Since the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
return to power in Afghanistan in mid-August, snuffies have allegedly carried out several terrorist attacks across the country, including at the Kabul airport in August in which more than 180 people were killed, and on a Shiite mosque in Kunduz in October that resulted in more than 150 people being killed.

The United States withdrew from Afghanistan in the specified time-frame, but did so haphazardly, causing chaos at the Kabul airport, with Afghans desperately attempting to make it out of the country, and 13 American soldiers killed in a bombing perpetrated by a local branch of the ISIS terror group.

The Taliban government has not been recognized by the international community, although some countries, including Russia and China, are holding diplomatic meetings with representatives of the movement to rectify the humanitarian situation in the country.

According to the UN, ISIS attacks have resulted in around 700 deaths since the Taliban came to power in Afghanistan.

Government Corruption
Frank Biden Peddled White House Influence During Joe Biden's Presidency
[BREITBART] President Joe The Big Guy Biden
...46th president of the U.S. An incredibly corrupt version of Jar-Jar Binks, only well into his dotage. The dumbass who abandoned Afghanistan....
’s younger brother Frank Biden peddled White House influence during Joe Biden’s presidency, according to a CNN
...the organization formerly known as the Cable News Network. Now who knows what it might stand for...
report that indicates the Biden family business remains operational even since Joe Biden was elected.

On at least two separate occasions, Frank Biden publicly cited Joe Biden as a means by which he has influence, despite holding no government position or relation to the White House other than by having the same last name as the president and being his sibling.

In October, Frank Biden spoke in Venice, Italia, as the keynote speaker at a BioSig Technologies conference about "the future of global health care." BioSig Technologies is a health technology company. The trip was not paid for by Frank Biden, who refused to disclose the financier.

His speech included advice on how lobbyists could influence American policy. CNN reported the instance of influence peddling:

The speaker was not a doctor. Nor did he have an extensive background in health care, global or otherwise. But Francis W. "Frank" Biden did have something else: A brother in the White House.

In his speech, Frank Biden talked about his family and his brother’s cancer initiative, according to attendees. Following his remarks, the leader of a trade group who attended the event promptly posted a video from Venice informing members he represents that he’d spoken with Frank Biden about their efforts to lobby the federal government on Medicare reimbursement rules. The president’s brother, he told his members, had agreed to help.

Another case of Frank Biden’s influence peddling occurred in Boston in 2021 — the year after Joe Biden was elected. On behalf of the same company, BioSig Technologies, Frank Biden told health professionals at a dinner that he had a "bully pulpit" due to "my brother Joey."

CNN reported:

At that event, Frank Biden boasted of "the bully pulpit that I have as a result of the privilege of being associated with my brother Joey," and vowed to "do everything in my power to support you to get the job done, to get federal dollars to your research," a video of his speech shows.

4 security personnel martyred in terrorist activity from across Pak-Iran border in Balochistan: ISPR
[Dawn] The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Wednesday that four security personnel were martyred during "terrorist activity" from across the Pakistain-Iran
...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites....
border in Balochistan
...the Pak province bordering Kandahar and Uruzgun provinces in Afghanistan and Sistan Baluchistan in Iran. Its native Baloch propulation is being displaced by Pashtuns and Punjabis and they aren't happy about it...
’s Panjgur district.

"Today, in a terrorist activity from across Pakistain-Iran border in Chukab sector, district Panjgur, Balochistan, four security forces personnel have embraced martyrdom," the statement said.

It further said that the forces of Evil used Iranian soil to "target a convoy of security forces patrolling along the border".

Iran has been asked to hunt down the gunnies on their side, the ISPR statement said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the incident. "Nation pays homage to the sacrifices of their martyred soldiers in [the] line of duty. We expect Iran will ensure that its soil is not used for cross-border attacks," he said.

President Dr Arif Alvi condemned the attack, and paid tribute to the services and sacrifices rendered by the martyred officials.

He stated that the whole nation had resolved to fight terrorism.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari also condemned the attack, and expressed grief and sorrow at the martyrdom of the security officials.

"Martyrs officials are the country’s heroes. The krazed killer who carried out the attack will have to pay," he said in a statement.

Last year in October, the Iranian authorities had closed the border with Pakistain at Taftan for two days after festivities between protesters and security forces in Zahedan, the capital city of Sistan-Baluchestan.

In February 2021, the border in Panjgur was closed after violent mostly peaceful demonstrations and attacks on government offices in Saravan area of Sistan-Balochestan.

'Painful wait': Jeff Bezos visit to Washington Post stokes fears of layoffs

[NYPOST] Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos paid a rare visit to the newspaper’s offices and took part in an editorial staff meeting on Thursday — igniting panic among the publication’s journalists that layoffs were imminent.

Bezos surprised staffers on Thursday morning when he showed up to the newspaper’s headquarters on K Street in the nation’s capital just weeks after publisher Fred Ryan announced looming layoffs during a stormy, chaotic all-hands meeting.

The Amazon founder’s presence in the newsroom prompted one staffer, who was dressed in a red shirt emblazoned with the insignia of the newspaper guild, to accost the billionaire and ask him directly why management was planning to lay people off rather than offer buyouts, according to multiple reports.

Bezos declined to address the matter, only saying that he was there to listen, according to the news site.

"I’m convinced this is going to be a protracted, painful wait for a lot of people," a Washington Post journalist told the Daily Beast.
The poor darlings. It makes the heart bleed, truly it does.

Better strategies for Bezos acquisitions that are spontaneously visited - slide a full size Almond Joy into his plastic pumpkin and hope he moves on to the next house. If he stays, challenge him to a game of chess. Use the chess delay to emergency scrabble all the remote workers in through shipping and back to their desks before the shark bump visit progresses to the tour stage.

The most pro-Russian people in the EU are ruled by Russophobic scoundrels
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
by Dmitry Bavyrin

[RIA] In a situation where Bulgaria is arming Ukraine, one can only sympathize with the Bulgarians. Brotherly.

"And what about the Bulgarians?" is almost a meme, born from Russian news about the opinion of Bulgarian bloggers. We report: the Bulgarians are still great.

They are still the most pro-Russian people in the European Union, according to a poll commissioned by the European Commission. The vast majority of them oppose sending weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and other assistance to Kiev. Since February, they have been holding processions, demonstrations and strikes with anti-Ukrainian and anti-NATO slogans, and sometimes under Russian flags.

They even put a snowball in the face of Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, forcing him to retreat behind the backs of the guards and to the cries of "Traitor!" Jurisdiction, among other things, a form of popular protest.

Therefore, there are no claims to the Bulgarians as a people, only sympathy. For a long time they did not wipe their feet on this people as revealingly as they wipe them now (the last one was, it seems, Hitler, but this is not certain).

Now Sophia is arming Kiev officially - by decree of the People's Assembly, that is, the Parliament. This is its fourth composition in two years, and this year the Bulgarians are likely to elect the fifth due to the chronic inability of the main forces to agree among themselves on a coalition.

But in our situation, this is not important, but the fact that the previous composition still managed to appoint a full-fledged government - the government of that same Petkov. Two months later, the SVO began, and the National Assembly directly forbade the Cabinet of Ministers to supply the Armed Forces of Ukraine: repairing equipment - yes, sending weapons - no.

In theory, this was an important decision that few here appreciated. In Bulgaria, since the First Cold War, extensive arsenals of Soviet-style weapons have been preserved. Many production facilities are also in place - no miracles, but so that small arms and ammunition can be riveted at an enviable pace for other Eastern Europe.

The role of Bulgaria in the NWO could be significant - and it really became significant. As it turns out now, Petkov and his maschera, former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Asen Vasilev, nevertheless gutted the Bulgarian arsenals in favor of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, contrary to the resolution of the parliament and the opinion of the people.

A parliamentary investigation has now been launched into this matter. Since the composition of the People's Assembly is the same that the Ukrainian Lend-Lease approved, it is unlikely to have unbearably unpleasant consequences for Petkov, like accusations of treason or something in the same spirit, which he well deserved.

Petkov and Vasilev admitted themselves, one might even say they boasted. According to the ex-premier, it was he who came up with the scheme with an interlayer in the form of other NATO countries , thanks to which weapons were not sent directly to Kiev, that is, the parliamentary ban was formally observed. He allegedly proposed this scheme at an urgent meeting of the leaders of the countries of the alliance after the start of the special operation. And he personally made sure that Bulgaria replaced Ukraine with a significant part of those diesel volumes that were previously purchased from Belarus .

According to Petkov, diesel for Ukrainian military equipment was produced, among other things, from Russian oil, including at a refinery owned by Lukoil. The ex-premier also attributes the authorship of this combination to himself.

Thanks to all this, even the authoritative American publication Politico now claims that Bulgaria literally saved Kiev. That is, it turns out that Petkov and Vasilev saved him - against the will of the Bulgarians, against the elected parliament, against even the international rules of the arms trade, according to which the final recipient must be specified in the contract.

There is nothing surprising in the fact that these two are participating in the competition for the title of Kyiv's best friend. There are many people participating in this competition - the Americans, the British, the Poles, and Emmanuel Macron with his wheeled tanks.

But it seems that only Petkov and Vasilev are participating in this way - toe to toe and with testimonies of how they fooled the people, parliament and government colleagues, otherwise, they say, they could not, since there are too many "pro-Russian agents" in Bulgaria.

It is important to emphasize here that this couple are not pensioners, but active politicians who claim to vote and return to power. They cannot fail to know that what they have done is contrary to the position of the overwhelming majority of Bulgarian citizens and has signs of a state crime. This is usually admitted to investigators, not to journalists.

But if you keep your answer not before the people, but before the American embassy, everything falls into place. True, not everyone gets such a vivid demonstration of the fictitiousness of Bulgarian democracy and the country's lack of sovereignty.

Bulgarians are far from alone in not being able to choose their country's foreign policy, many peoples have this problem. But they wiped their feet about them so revealingly that a completely conspiracy version creeps in about the deliberate punishment of the pride of those who dare to step out of step.

Against the background of the events described, Kyiv appointed a new ambassador to Sofia - a "sexologist", "hypnotist" and "Gestalt therapist" (a rare case when so many quotes are needed for professional identification) Olesya Ilashchuk with a complete lack of experience in public service and diplomatic practice. A rather eloquent gesture of respect for the state, which "saved Ukraine" at the cost of a big lie and plundering arsenals.

Thus, Bulgaria is both a vassal of the pro-Ukrainian coalition and a bit of an outcast, because at the level of the people it glances towards Russia without hatred now. Uncommonly unfortunate.

Another thing is that this is a path well known to the Bulgarians, their own level. Both before the restoration of independence, and after the restoration of independence, the population of Bulgaria for the most part sympathized with the Russian brother, and the government was almost always not only pro-Western - with a focus on the Germans and the British, but also fundamentally anti-Russian.

The roots of this are sometimes sought in the historical conflict with Serbia and jealousy towards St. Petersburg , which, as it seemed to Sofia, chose Belgrade as his "beloved wife" , although he preferred Sofia just the same (by the way, "brothers" is exactly about the Bulgarians, this word is for the Serbs lexically alien). The same jealousy was in Belgrade, where there were also enough Anglophiles with Russophobes. But if the Serbs alternated between anti-Russian elites and Russophile ones, in the Bulgarian case it seemed to be stuck - only the 45-year period of comrade Zhivkov looks like an exception.

As a result, the state, restored by the forces of Russia, fought on the side of its enemies in both world wars. And here it seems again. Why be surprised?

Unless the fact that the well-bred boy prodigy Petkov turned out to be worse than the Bulgarian "enfan terrible" - a hardened Russophobe, Atlanticist, autocrat, boor and mafioso Boyko Borisov, who ruled the country for ten years before him. Since Borisov was (and remains) an honest enemy, staked out Bulgaria as a feudal land for himself, and his successor is a vile, cowardly type, who finally handed over the keys to government somewhere in Brussels and Washington .

Therefore, we sympathize with the Bulgarians. Therefore, and because they sympathized with us.

Years will pass. Borisov, Petkov, Vasilev will go into oblivion, and their boss Biden will leave even earlier. Any politicians leave sooner or later, but the peoples remain.

And if we are not talking about some kind of secret sorcery, finally created by the Ottomans fleeing Bulgaria, then sooner or later, even seemingly hopeless in this sense, the Bulgarians can turn off their strange level, when the most pro-Russian people of Europe are ruled by Russophobic scoundrels from time to time, signing their homeland on other people's adventures.

From the point of view of friendship between peoples, the snowball caught by Petkov's face is more important than all that he made with his hands.
The Bulgarians at least tried. Many others go to the slaughter in silence.

19:24 Denis Pushilin declared that Russian troops are close to the operational encirclement of Artyomovsk

According to him, the fighting is now taking place directly in Artyomovsk, specifically in the area of the meat processing plant.

“The divisions of the Wagner PMC are advancing day and night. They are also advancing in the vicinity of Soledar, a serious cleansing is taking place there. After the liberation of Kleshcheevka in Artyomovsk, new horizons are opening up and, I would say, a radical improvement in positions.

In Artemovsk, we can say that the situation, if not close to completion, then to the operational environment, which the Wagner PMC units located there are now striving for, ”the Acting Head of the DPR answered a question on Friday at the opening ceremony of the first semi-final of the Leaders revival. Donetsk People's Republic.

19:16 In the DPR, attempts by the Armed Forces of Ukraine to transfer equipment to Maryinka are recorded, Acting Head of the DPR Denis Pushilin said.

"As for Maryinka, the fighting continues in those positions after the capture of skyscrapers for the private sector, there are some industrial buildings that the enemy is still trying to hold and hinder the advance of our units. It’s difficult for us, it’s not easy, the enemy doesn’t give up, doesn’t drop his weapon – until we fix this. The enemy is transferring reserves, trying to transfer equipment as well, in order to detain our guys for as long as possible," said Denis Pushilin.

17:35 APU lost 450 people in Zaporozhye in two weeks: details

According to RT, in the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Orekhov region (Zaporozhye region), a sharp surge in losses among personnel is recorded. Over the past two weeks, in the 108th and 109th territorial defense brigades, as well as in the units of the 23rd separate public order brigade of the National Guard and the 65th brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, about 450 people were killed and seriously injured.

The greatest number of losses in these units was recorded after hits by Krasnopol-M high-precision artillery rounds of 152mm caliber, as well as high-precision missiles of the 300mm BM-30 Smerch and Tornado-S systems of 300mm caliber.

Located to the west, in the village of Shcherbaki (20 km from Orekhov), units of the 65th Specialized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the 98th Territorial Defense Brigade cannot be transferred to Orekhov to provide assistance. Every attempt to break through to the city is frustrated due to the fire control of the RF Armed Forces over a section of the T-1802 highway. According to radio intercepts, the command of these formations expresses fears that an attempt to strengthen Orekhov by moving units could weaken other sectors on the line of contact and bring down the front in Stepovoe and Kamenskoye.

Due to heavy losses in the 108th and 109th territorial defense brigades, the command of the units cannot organize the protection of especially important facilities of the Armed Forces of Ukraine both on the first lines of defense and inside the city. Also, due to high losses, filtration measures among the local population are disrupted.

15:41 Capture of Lobkovy in the Zaporizhia direction worsens the situation for the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Kamianske-Zaporozhye section. The reasons for the loss of this village and a number of other positions were the withdrawal of part of the brigades from the direction in the interests of holding the front near Artemovsk, Soledar and Maryinka. 09:09 Frontline summary on the morning of 01/20/2023

In Zaporozhye, the Russian army, with the support of artillery, attacked the positions of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Stepnoe in order to reach an important section of the road leading to Orekhovo. To the south-east of this city, she tried to move towards Malaya Tokmachka. There is also a section of the rockade. Thus, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are striving to reach Orekhov from two sides. Artillery hit Gulyai-Pole and Poltavka. (Fig. 1)

On the Donetsk front, Russian troops attacked in the direction of the local Paraskoveevka. In Marinka, they are pushing the APU on the western outskirts of the city, advancing in the Vodiane area. Artillery is working in the Ukrainian fortified area in Avdiivka. (Fig. 2)

South of Bakhmut, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have serious problems. PMC "Wagner" from Kurdyumovka attacks in the direction of Dyleevka. And a little to the north, an assault is already underway at the White Mountain. That is, the "musicians" set their sights on Konstantinovka, through which the supply of the Ukrainian garrison in Bakhmut passes.

Moreover, this city, like Chasov Yar, is the command center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Donbass and the place of concentration of forces and reserves. Konstantinovka is also the southern gate of Kramatorsk. After PMC "Wagner" took Kleshcheevka, the way to Bakhmut from the south is open.

There are no more settlements here. On the eastern outskirts of Bakhmut itself, the Wagner operators are also advancing. But this is more likely a diversion of enemy forces. It is obvious that they will try to encircle the city. This is evidenced by the events north of Bakhmut. PMC "Wagner" attacks Krasnaya Gora and Blagodatnoe. And to the east of Seversk, Russian troops are already trying to advance towards Verkhnekamenskoye. (Fig. 3)

In the Lugansk direction, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation again attacked in the Belogorovka area. They also tried to advance from Zhitlovka to Terny. The Armed Forces of Ukraine, in turn, are conducting offensive operations on Kuzemovka. For Russian troops, this is a dangerous direction. There are no settlements behind this village, rather open area. Quite a convenient way to Svatovo from the north-west. (Fig. 4)

Crypto lender Genesis files for bankruptcy in latest blow to Barry Silbert's DCG empire
[CNBC] Crypto lender Genesis filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection late Thursday night in Manhattan federal court, the latest casualty in the industry contagion caused by the collapse of FTX and a crippling blow to a business once at the heart of Barry Silbert's Digital Currency Group.

The company listed over 100,000 creditors in a "mega" bankruptcy filing, with aggregate liabilities ranging from $1.2 billion to $11 billion dollars, according to bankruptcy documents.

Three separate petitions were filed for Genesis' holding companies. In a statement, the company noted that the companies were only involved in Genesis' crypto lending business. The company's derivatives and spot trading business will continue unhindered, as will Genesis Global Trading.

"We look forward to advancing our dialogue with DCG and our creditors' advisors as we seek to implement a path to maximize value and provide the best opportunity for our business to emerge well-positioned for the future," Genesis interim CEO Derar Islim said in a statement.

The filing follows months of speculation over whether Genesis would enter bankruptcy protection, and just days after the Securities and Exchange Commission filed suit against Genesis and its onetime partner, Gemini, over the unregistered offering and sale of securities.

Genesis listed a $765.9 million loan payable from Gemini in Thursday's bankruptcy filing. Other sizeable claims included a $78 million loan payable from Donut, a high-yield, decentralized platform, and a VanEck fund, with a $53.1 million loan payable.

Gemini co-founder Cameron Winklevoss initially responded to the news on Twitter, writing that Silbert and DCG "continue to refuse to offer creditors a fair deal."

"We have been preparing to take direct legal action against Barry, DCG, and others," he continued.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
What happened to the Switzerland of the Middle East?
[An Nahar] Since an unprecedented financial crisis hit Lebanon Hezbollahstan
...a formerly French, now an Iranian colony situated on the eastern Mediterranean, conveniently adjacent to Israel. ...
in late 2019, the currency has lost more than 95 percent of its value and much of the population has been plunged into poverty.

Factional deadlock has left the country largely leaderless in the face of the political and economic turmoil, with a vacant presidency, a central bank chief under European investigation and a government with only caretaker powers.

On Thursday, on the black market, the Lebanese pound fell below the psychologically important threshold of 50,000 to the greenback, dealers said.

The main official exchange rate still pegs the pound at 1,507 to the dollar.

Parliament convened Thursday for an 11th bid to elect a new president, but failed again.

A new study published by the U.N. World Food Program this week found that 1.29 million Lebanese citizens and 700,000 refugees from the conflict in neighboring Syria were food insecure in the last four months of 2022.

It is a huge fall for a country that once boasted the monicker "Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
of the Middle East" for its role as a regional financial center.

The worsening political paralysis has Lebanon not only without a president but also with only a caretaker government, stalling a host of economic reforms aimed at stopping wasteful spending and combating rampant corruption.

A senior financial adviser, Michel Kozah, said the Lebanese pound’s worsening deterioration is due to the absence of appropriate measures to stabilize the currency early on in the crisis, including formal capital controls, and a plan approved by the International Monetary Fund.

Instead, he said, there have been short-term policies and circulars from the government and central bank that he describes as a "shot of morphine."

"We gave promises to the IMF but did nothing," Kozah explained. "If you were anywhere else in the world, you wouldn’t get to where you are today because the authorities would have taken measures from day one."

Lebanese authorities in April 2022 reached a tentative agreement with the IMF for a recovery plan conditional on a host of economic reforms and anti-corruption measures. However,
by candlelight every wench is handsome...
the international organization has been critical of Lebanon's sluggish efforts to meet these demands.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter wished he had thought to pack sun block...
Lebanon’s cash-strapped banks continue to impose strict limits on withdrawals of foreign currency, imposed in October 2019, tying up the savings of millions of people. As the economy continues to tank without any reforms, some depositors have resorted to storming bank branches and taking their trapped savings by force.

Government Corruption
Court upholds Gov. Ron DeSantis' suspension of prosecutor with ‘militant agenda'
[FoxNews] DeSantis suspended Hillsborough County State Attorney Andrew Warren last August for 'neglect of duty'.
Mr. Warren is one of the Soros stable of radical left prosecutors.
U.S. Judge Robert Hinkle's ruling Friday found that DeSantis' decision to suspend Warren violated the U.S. Constitution and the Florida state Constitution, but the judge still upheld the suspension.

"The suspension also violated the Florida Constitution, and that violation did affect the outcome. But the 11th Amendment prohibits a federal court from awarding declaratory or injunctive relief of the kind at issue against a state official based only on a violation of state law," the judge's filing stated.

"The plaintiff Andrew H. Warren’s claims against the defendant Ron DeSantis arising under state law are dismissed without prejudice based on the 11th Amendment. Mr. Warren’s claims against Mr. DeSantis arising under federal law are dismissed on the merits with prejudice. The clerk must close the file," the filing continued.

After the ruling was announced, DeSantis communications director Taryn Fenske issued a statement, saying, "Today the court upheld the governor’s decision to suspend Andrew Warren from office for neglect of duty and incompetence."

Warren had signed a declaration last June stating that "[b]ills that criminalize safe and crucial medical treatments or the mere public existence of trans people do not promote public safety, community trust, or fiscal responsibility," and as such the signers pledged "to use our settled discretion and limited resources on enforcement of laws that will not erode the safety and well-being of our community."

The governor's executive order said that "the Florida legislature has not enacted such criminal laws," but that "these statements prove that Warren thinks he has authority to defy the Florida Legislature and nullify in his jurisdiction criminal laws with which he disagrees[.]"

Eritrean troops withdrawing from towns in Tigray: Witnesses
[AlAhram] Witnesses in some towns across Æthiopia’s Tigray region say troops from neighboring Eritrea
...is run by the People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), with about the amounts of democracy and justice you'd expect from a party with that name. National elections have been periodically scheduled and cancelled; none have ever been held in the country. The president, Isaias Afewerki, has been in office since independence in 1993 and will probably die there of old age...
have started withdrawing in large convoys, a potentially significant development after a devastating conflict in the region ended late last year.

The presence of the Eritreans despite a peace deal signed in November between Æthiopia’s federal government and Tigray forces has been seen as a major challenge to the agreement’s implementation. Eritrea, allied with Æthiopian forces, wasn't a party to the deal that ended two years of fighting, which was estimated by researchers to have killed 500,000 people.

"The Eritrean forces have started withdrawing from Shire in large convoys today," a humanitarian worker in Shire town told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named on Friday, describing several dozen vehicles carrying soldiers in Eritrean military uniforms. The witness, speaking like others on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation, said that some vehicles were heading in the direction of Sheraro, near the Eritrean border.

A civil servant in the town of Axum said that residents had been told to avoid the main street as "Eritrean forces started to exit from the area." A resident in the town of Adwa confirmed the withdrawal of Eritrean forces there.

Æthiopian government front man Legesse Tulu and a front man for the Tigray side didn’t immediately respond to questions.

Eritrean forces entered Æthiopia’s devastating conflict in its earliest days. The Æthiopian and Eritrean governments denied the participation of Eritrea, one of the world’s most reclusive nations, until Æthiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed acknowledged it in March 2021.

Rights groups, ethnic Tigrayans and some Western countries expressed alarm over the presence of Eritrean forces, which were blamed for some of the worst abuses in the conflict including widespread rapes. Even after the peace deal was signed, witnesses alleged that some Eritrean forces continued to loot and kill.

In an apparent acknowledgement of participation in the conflict, the Eritrean Embassy in Æthiopia on Wednesday posted excerpts from state-owned newspaper Hadas Eritrea saying that "the favor the Eritrean government and people did to Æthiopia will be written in golden colors in history and in the region ... and (it) has got rid of an international danger," referring to Tigray forces that Eritrea’s government has long regarded as a threat.

The Æthiopian military "didn’t lose support in the last two years from the greatly disciplined, fighting capable and unrivaled Eritrean army," the newspaper excerpt said. "Because of this, the (Tigray forces) traitorous group defeat has been concluded with humiliation and disarmament."

Eritrea has been a bitter enemy of the Tigray Peoples’ Liberation Front that dominated Æthiopian politics for close to 30 years until Abiy came to power in 2018. Æthiopia and Eritrea fought a bloody border war from 1998 to 2000, but Abiy made peace with Eritrea shortly after taking office.

Spying for Russia: Europeans recruited for Putin's information war
[AlAhram] European countries are on high alert for Russian spies in their military, intelligence services and other state agencies following a growing number of espionage scandals that have caused blushes from Bulgaria to Berlin.

On Thursday, a Swedish court sentenced a former intelligence agent to life in prison and his brother to 10 years behind bars for passing sensitive information to Russia's military intelligence service, GRU.

Here are some other cases of Europeans caught up in Russian spying scandals in recent years:

GERMAN SUSPECTED DOUBLE AGENT
German police in December 2022 arrest a suspected double agent within the BND foreign intelligence agency for allegedly sharing state secrets with Russia.

The arrest of the man, identified only as Carsten L., comes a month after a German man was given a suspended prison sentence for passing information to Russian intelligence services while working as a reserve officer for the German army between 2014 and 2020.

ITALIAN CAPTAIN
In March 2021, an Italian navy captain and father of four is arrested after being caught handing over a memory card containing 181 pictures of confidential documents to a Russian military officer.

Walter Biot, who worked in the office of the Chief of the Defence Staff and had access to classified documents, was allegedly paid 5,000 euros.

His wife tells the Corriere della Sera newspaper he was "desperate" for money to support his family.

BULGARIAN DEFENCE OFFICIALS
In March 2021, Bulgarian authorities break up a suspected Russian spy ring comprising several defence ministry officials.

The ring is allegedly led by a former intelligence officer whose Russian-Bulgarian wife played the role of intermediary with the Russian embassy.

Two Russian diplomats are expelled over the affair.

AUSTRIAN COLONEL
In 2018, a retired Austrian army colonel is arrested on charges of spying for Russia for decades, starting in the 1990s.

Under questioning he reveals the Russians wanted information about weapons systems and the migrant crisis in Europe. In 2020, he is sentenced to three years in prison.

POLISH ENERGY OFFICIAL
In March 2018, a Polish energy ministry official is arrested for passing information to Russia about Poland's stance on the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline project.

Poland staunchly opposed the pipeline built to transport Russian gas through the Baltic Sea to Western Europe, bypassing transit countries Poland and Ukraine.

The official is sentenced to three years in prison.

HUNGARIAN POLITICIAN
In 2017, a Hungarian member of the European Parliament from the nationalist Jobbik party, Bela Kovacs, is charged with spying on the EU for Russia.

Kovacs, whose father was Russian, was a frequent visitor to Moscow, where is now believed to be living.

He is sentenced in absentia to five years in jail in September 2022.

FORMER MOLDOVAN POLITICIAN
A former MP in the former Soviet republic of Moldova, Iurie Bolboceanu, is arrested in March 2017 on charges of regularly selling information to Russia.

Moldova has been pushing to rid itself of Moscow's influence.

Bolboceanu is sentenced to 14 years imprisonment for treason.

LATVIAN RAILWAY WORKER
In late 2016, Latvian railway worker Aleksandrs Krasnopjorovs is arrested for recording videos of NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
troops and cargo being moved by rail and then sending them to contacts in Russia.

An ethnic Russian and former Soviet Red Army soldier who served in Afghanistan during the 1980s, he is sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

About those Swedish spies referenced above:
Swedish intel agent gets life for spying for Russia

[Yahoo] A judge on Thursday handed a life sentence to a former Swedish intelligence official convicted of spying for Russia for a decade and tossed in the slammer
Book 'im, Mahmoud!
his brother for 10 years.

A Stockholm court found 42-year-old Peyman Kia, who served in Sweden's intelligence service Sapo and military intelligence units, and his brother Payam, 35, guilty of "aggravated espionage".

It is considered one of Sweden's most serious espionage affairs in history given Peyman Kia's access to highly classified information, which he is convicted of gathering for Russian military intelligence from 2011 to 2021.

The brothers, Swedish citizens of Iranian origin, "illegally and for the benefit of Russia and the GRU, acquired, transmitted and disclosed information whose disclosure to a foreign power could harm Sweden's security", the court ruled.

It found Peyman Kia guilty of gathering some 90 classified documents, some of which he did not have security clearance to access.

His brother was found guilty of planning the crime and managing contacts with the GRU, passing on about 45 of the classified documents.

They were arrested in 2021, several years after Sapo first suspected a mole and counterintelligence began investigating Peyman Kia.

The pair have been held in jug since their arrest. Both denied the charges and few details about the secrets they exposed have come to light due to their sensitive nature.

- POSSIBLE MONEY MOTIVE -
Peyman Kia was handed a life sentence for espionage "of the most serious category", Judge Mans Wigen said.

The defendant abused the trust placed in him as an intelligence official in order to aid Russia, which poses "the biggest threat to Sweden," the judge added.

Peyman Kia's lawyer Anton Strand told Swedish media his client would appeal the verdict, while the younger brother's lawyer, Bjorn Sandin, said he would recommend his client do the same.

Despite a trove of evidence, including USB sticks, laptops, hard discs and mobile phones, the court acknowledged that there was much it had been unable to ascertain.

"It is clear that some pieces of the puzzle are missing and it has therefore not been possible to establish with certainty what has happened", the court wrote, speculating that the brothers may have been motivated by money.

The court found that Peyman Kia handled cash worth around 550,000 kronor (around $50,000) in 2016-2017, most of it in US dollars, which it said was likely payment from Russia for the classified documents.

The court said Kia's various explanations for the cash and the classified documents found on his computer were "not credible".

Much of the investigation and trial, and Thursday's court ruling, were classified and therefore barred to the public.

The case has led to changes in military routines in order to improve security, an armed forces spokeswoman told news agency TT.

Sapo chief Charlotte von Essen said her organization had taken "measures to cope with the harm done" by "an employee who grossly abused the trust placed in him".

The trial coincides with another spectacular spying case involving a couple of Russian origin arrested last year at their home in a Stockholm suburb in an airborne police raid at dawn. Moscow allegedly installed the couple, named by the Bellingcat investigative website as Sergei Skvortsov and Elena Koulkova, as sleeper agents in the late 1990s. According to Swedish media, the pair managed specialist import-export companies dealing in electronic components and industrial technology.

Skvortsov was placed in temporary custody in November for "illegal intelligence activities". His companion was detained on suspicion of complicity before being released, although she remains a person of interest in the investigation.

Swedish authorities say the case is not linked to that of the Kia brothers.

Abbott Labs under criminal investigation over baby formula shortage: Report
[FoxBusiness] The Justice Department is investigating conduct at the Abbott Laboratories infant-formula plant in Sturgis, Michigan

The Justice Department is investigating Abbott Laboratories' baby formula plant in Michigan, which was at the center of a nationwide formula shortage that plagued millions of families, the Wall Street Journal reports.

In May, Abbott reached an agreement with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to reopen the company’s manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan to help ease a nationwide shortage of baby formula, after the facility was closed due to bacterial contamination.

FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said Abbott, under the conditions of the agreement, would correct insanitary conditions that led to the contamination and plant closure.

"The DOJ has informed us of its investigation, and we’re cooperating fully," an Abbott spokesman told the Wall Street Journal.

The investigation signals further scrutiny of Abbott’s operation of the plant, a major source of baby formula in the U.S.

Last January, FDA inspectors found the cronobacter pathogen at the plant after receiving reports of babies who drank the company’s formula and became sick. The bacteria that was detected in the supply found let to at least four infant illnesses-including two deaths.

The inspectors also found standing water, damage to drying equipment and defects in the seams of formula cans, among other problems at the Sturgis plant.

In a 10-page report published in September, the FDA stated that conditions observed at the Abbott facility "were not consistent with a strong food safety culture."

Abbott temporarily halted production at the Sturgis factory in February, and recalled baby formula made at the plant.

The move sparked a national formula shortage which forced the U.S. to airlift millions of pounds of powdered formula from overseas.

Vox's sports sites hit hard as company lays off seven percent of workforce
[NYPOST] Sportswriters were hit hard by layoffs at Vox, which cut seven percent of its workforce — about 130 employees — on Friday.

"Unfortunately, in this economic climate, we’re not able to sustain projects and areas of the business that have not performed as anticipated, are less core to where we see the biggest opportunities in the coming years, or where we don’t have enough rationale to support ongoing investment in what could be a prolonged downturn," Vox CEO Jim Bankoff wrote a memo to employees. "In spite of the dedication of the many talented people involved in these initiatives, we need to scale back."

Throughout the day, a number of sportswriters announced their positions have been eliminated.

Nate Wilcox, the founding editor of the critically acclaimed MMA site Bloody Elbow, tweeted that he was laid off with "15 minutes notice."

Reconstruction of Kabul-Jalalabad Highway Completed: MoPW
[ToloNews] The reconstruction of parts of Kabul-Jalalabad Highway that were damaged by floods in recent years has been completed, the Ministry of Public Work said on Friday.

According to the MoPW, the project cost 25 million Afs and was completed in over one and a half years.
It’ll be interesting to see how long until they have to redo the work.
"The road was reconstructed with good quality. It starts from the Butkhak Roundabout (in Kabul) and ends at Hisark district of Jalalabad. The highway was damaged by the recent floods," said Abdul Wali Mohammad, head of the transport department of the MoPW.

"At least 350 to 400 people have worked in this project, also 20 to 30 cars have conducted daily activities," said Miro Gul, head of the contractor company.

The MoPW called on the residents of the country to pay serious attention in maintenance of the street.

"I want to tell the people that this highway is a national asset and its maintenance is not only the responsibility of the governmentt but it is also the responsibilit of the people and also the drivers who should avoid from overloading their trucks," said Sadiqullah Rahimi, head of the department of construction of the MoPW.
"We will establish armed checkpoints to extract boodle estimate weight limit violations"
This comes as many residents of the southern provinces have expressed concerns over severe conditions of the streets and said that it was one of the reasons for traffic accidents.

"The highway to Kandahar be also damaged, especially the areas of Durani and Qalat and that is why traffic accidents happen," said Karimullah, a driver.

The Kabul-Jalalabad Highway connects Kabul with the eastern provinces and is considered as one of the main highways in the country.

Demonstration in Ouagadougou in support of the withdrawal of French troops
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[RIA Novosti] A demonstration in support of the withdrawal of French troops from Burkina Faso took place in the capital, Ouagadougou, according to Burkina24.

According to the publication, "hundreds" of people came out in support of the transitional authorities.
Maff is racist
"The demonstrators called for the withdrawal of the French military from the base ... in Cambouance, the departure of the French ambassador to Burkina Faso, Luc Allade," the report said.

The action was initiated by the Pan-African Leadership Collective.
They sound like communists. Are they communists?
In particular, it supports the diversification of the country's partners in the fight against terrorism. In photos and videos posted by the publication, you can see that some of the demonstrators brought Russian flags to the event.

At the end of September 2022, a military group in Burkina Faso, led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, announced the removal of the head of the country's transitional government, Lieutenant Colonel Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba, the suspension of the country's constitution and the dissolution of the government. Damiba announced his readiness to voluntarily resign if the rebels fulfilled several conditions.

Burkina Faso, located in the Sahel region , is trying to contain a radical jihadist offensive that has been ongoing since 2015.

A Florida woman has been arrested for luring a man into a violent mostly peaceful ambush after promising him "sexual favors," according to a report.
"Yes, anonymous internet babe! I've always dreamed of meeting someone like you!"
Gracie Lemke, 20, reached out to the unidentified victim on Facebook Messenger and pledged to perform sex acts on him this past weekend, according to the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.
"I've got Cheese Whiz just waiting, baby!"
The duped mark agreed to meet Lemke in nearby Adamsville and arrived by car, the Villages News reported.
"Don't forget yer wallet and watch!"
"Hmm... I wonder why she said that?"

As he exited his vehicle, Joshua Timmons, 24, suddenly appeared and held the man at bay, while Lemke and another accomplice, Lauren Locher, rummaged through his SUV for valuables, police said.
"My valuables! Grandma's brooch! The silverware! My polo racquet! The Ming vase!"
The victim then managed to wrestle himself away from Timmons and ran down the road, according to police.
"Feets, don't fail me now!"
Timmons is then said to have pulled out a gun
"Look out — he's got a gun!"
and shot him once in the back, with the bullet exiting out of his abdomen.
"Ow! Oh, spit! That really hurts!"
As he writhed on the road, the treacherous trio hopped in his 2008 Chevrolet Blazer and sped off towards a home where Timmons and Lemke were living.
"No one will ever know! Har har har!"
Cops soon arrived at the residence and spotted Timmons trying to burn his clothes in an attempt to destroy evidence from the ambush.
"Hey there, feller! Whatcha doin'?"
"Just burning my clothes, officer. Why do you ask?"
