[Forbes] The House Committee on Ethics is investigating Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), according to a statement the panel issued on Wednesday.
The statement, which did not provide many details about the inquiry, said that the panel will announce its course of action after its organizational meeting in the next Congress, sometime in 2023.
A spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez said that she was confident that the case would be dismissed. "The Congresswoman has always taken ethics incredibly seriously, refusing any donations from lobbyists, corporations, or other special interests," the spokesperson said in a statement.
The nonpartisan Office of Congressional Ethics forwarded its inquiry into Ocasio-Cortez to the House ethics panel in June, according to the report. Typically, when that office forwards an investigation, it is because the office has reason to believe an ethics law was broken. Wednesday’s statement, attributed to acting Chair Susan Wild (D-Penns.) and Ranking Member Michael Guest (R-Miss.), says the disclosure of the investigation "does not itself indicate that any violation has occurred, or reflect any judgment on behalf of the committee."

Texas State Senator Bryan Hughes, the Republican chair of the Texas committee, said that requests for the documents had been issued to BlackRock and three other major financial firms in August, but that 'some have provided more than others.'
'The Committee needs these documents to uncover the extent to which these firms have been playing politics using Texans’ hard earned money,' Hughes told DailyMail.com in a statement.

It turns out the US is not the only banana republic out there: moments ago, Peru President Pedro Castillo announced the dissolution of congress and called for legislative elections to draft a new constitution hours before an impeachment debate, greatly escalating a political crisis and putting the Latin American nation’s democracy under threat.
"We took the decision of establishing a government of exception toward reestablishing the rule of law and democracy," Castillo said in a televised speech Wednesday, adding that the incoming congress will draft a new constitution within nine months. "From today and until the new congress is established, we will govern through decrees."
Castillo's move was met with nationwide protests and outrage by the Peruvian constitutional court which called the dissolution of Congress a coup, and said that Castillo is no longer president. Meanwhile, the Congress - which apparently did not get the memo that it has been dissolved - started the Castillo impeachment session early, and will most likely vote to remove the president.
Additionally, the Peruvian vice president Boluarte rejected Castillo's "coup" while the country's Attorney General said he would file a criminal complaint against Castillo.
Meanwhile Castillo also announced a curfew and the "reorganization" of Peru’s justice system including the top courts at the same time he pledged to respect private property and business freedom. The president also said all illegal arms in possession of Peruvians must be handed back to the police within 72 hours.
Castillo’s unexpected move comes as congress was preparing to discuss a third impeachment attempt against him after failing to remove him from power twice. The president has had a rocky relationship with lawmakers since the start of his administration in July 2021 yet the measure risks creating a backlash as it’s legality will be questioned. A sign of that came quickly after Castillo’s speech, when Finance Minister Kurt Burneo, Foreign Minister Cesar Landa, and Justice Minister Felix Chero presented their resignations.
The move brought back memories of the decision by former leader Alberto Fujimori in 1992 to dissolve congress. At that time, he was supported by his ministers and the military.
And just like then, what will matter at the end of the day is who controls the army.
Sure enough, as Rodolfo Rojas, a partner at Lima-based Sequoia political advisory group said, "the army’s attitude toward this will be decisive over the next hours. If they back Castillo, he could stay in power temporarily, but if not, he’s going to fall."

Each of the seven Democratic politicians who addressed this week’s J Street’s conference expressed alarm over the "extreme right-wing" government being formed in Israel, as the Biden administration, the same old faces in slightly different places, the same old ideas, the same old graft ...the pack of self-imagined masterminds of strategy and intrigue at the service of the Biden Crime Family and a grateful nation... chose a more cautious approach.
Most of the politicians are self-described progressives and part of a camp that has long grown uncomfortable with Israeli actions in the West Bank, but they are also not aligned with the more left-wing Squad that includes such politicians as Alexandria Sandy Ocasio-Cortez Dem Congressgirl from da Bronx in Noo Yawk and leader of the Mean Girl Caucus in Congress. One of the Great Minds of the 21st Century, she is known as much for her innaleck as for her dance moves. She is all in favor of socialism, even though she's fuzzy on the details. The representatives’ lack of hesitation in openly lamenting prime minister-designate Benjamin Netanyahu’s return to power and his elevation of bad boypoliticians to senior posts served as a preview to the kind of pressure the Biden administration will likely face from its own party to come down harder on Israel in the coming years.
For now, the administration indicated it was taking a wait-and-see approach to its dealings with the next Israeli government, which could be sworn in within days.
"We will gauge the government by the policies it pursues rather than individual personalities," US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said at the conference.
The White House held a meeting last week to discuss how it might engage with the next government, but no decisions were made, Axios reported Wednesday.
An official familiar with the matter told The Times of Israel that US Ambassador to Israel Tom Nides is currently not planning to meet with Itamar Ben Gvir, the leader of the bad boy Otzma Yehudit party who Netanyahu has tapped to become the next minister in charge of police. That policy may also extend to Bezalel Smotrich, who Netanyahu plans to appoint as finance minister and whose pro-annexationist Religious Zionism party has also been granted authority over a pair of Defense Ministry bodies heavily involved in West Bank policy.
"In Israel, the political forces defending democracy and equal rights and freedom under law and the grinding of the peace processor must contend with a surging far-right alliance in the Knesset, which is poised to contribute numerous members to Netanyahu’s new cabinet," said Rep. Jamie Raskin, who led the impeachment efforts against former president Donald Trump ...His ancestors didn't own any slaves... "The inclusion of political hard boyz in the government of a democratic society — as we’ve seen recently here in the Trump administration — constitutes a clear and present danger to democratic values, the rule of law and human rights ...which are often intentionally defined so widely as to be meaningless... ," he added in his keynote address at the conference’s opening plenary on Saturday night.
Seven-term congressman Rep. Gerry Connolly tore into Netanyahu’s decision to "trash" former president Barak Obama’s Iran ...a theocratic Shiite state divided among the Medes, the Persians, and the (Arab) Elamites.... policy in an address to a joint session of Congress in 2015 and said the only solution to dealing with the Islamic Theocratic Republic that the prime minister-designate will accept is a "kinetic" one where the US conducts a military strike against Tehran’s nuclear sites. "The consequences would be catastrophic," he said.
"Bibi [should know] that when he comes here, he’d better not try to divide us on partisan lines again. He’d better not risk Israel’s long-term support in the United States by making it a partisan issue. And he’d better listen to voices, including the voices in this room, who are growing in number," Connolly said on Monday.
"He’s put together the most extreme right-wing government in the history of Israel, including people who were not long ago designated as terrorist supporting, not only by our government and Europa ...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum... but by Israel itself," Connolly said of Ben Gvir, whose Otzma Yehudit party members are disciples of the late bad boy rabbi Meir Kahane. Kahane’s Kach party has been outlawed in the US and Israel as a terror organization.
Rep. Peter Welch, who recently won the election for one of Virginia’s two Senate seats, said Netanyahu has "display[ed] a callous disregard for the principles of Israel’s Declaration of Independence.
"Why is he working to create a government that not only opposes a two-state solution, but one that would include ministers who would expel Arab Israeli citizens?" he asked. Ben Gvir campaigned on expelling "disloyal" Arab citizens.
"I cannot support Netanyahu’s efforts to undermine the very aspirations of the democratic State of Israel by marginalizing, annexing and compromising rights of Arab Israeli citizens," Welch added.
He also referenced Trump’s dinner last month with prominent antisemites Kanye West and Nick Fuentes: "Bibi didn’t have dinner with Trump and Ye and Fuentes, but it’s clear he’s serving the same menu."
In her video address to the conference, Rep. Becca Balint — who will replace Welch in the House of Representatives — hailed the earlier remarks of J Street president Jeremy Ben Ami. "An ultra-right-wing Netanyahu government will force a moment of reckoning for the US-Israel relationship," she quoted him as having said.
Speaking together onstage about the J Street-sponsored trips they took to Israel and the West Bank, Reps. Melanie Stansbury, Jennifer Wexton, Madeleine Dean and Sean Casten expressed their dismay at the situation on the ground, particularly for Paleostinians in Hebron and for Israelis in the Gazoo ...Hellhole adjunct to Israel and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula, inhabited by Gazooks. The place was acquired in the wake of the 1967 War and then presented to Paleostinian control in 2006 by Ariel Sharon, who had entered his dotage. Wexton, who has in past signed onto initiatives expressing her concern over Israeli unilateral measures in the West Bank, said she expected the Biden administration to follow through on pledges to block them.
"And if they don’t, I’ve got Secretary Blinken coming before my committee soon, and I think that I’ll ask him about that," she said.
