In a bizarre incident, lawyers joined a mob in raining blows on the two key Nithari accused when they were being escorted to a local court here on Thursday. Moninder Singh Pandher and Surendra Koli received severe blows when an apparently furious mob went berserk and ransacked windowpanes of the courtroom, attacked photo journalists and policemen on duty.
It was obvious the local police failed to protect the accused and were clueless when the mob attacked them. Late in the evening, SSP Ghaziabad Naveen Arora accepted that there had been lapses by police. In a swift action, Arora suspended the Station Officer RK Paliwal, court police post in charge and a Sub-Inspector for their "grave negligence".
Earlier in the scuffle, SHO of Kavi Nagar police station sustained sprain in his right palm and his colleague Narender Singh sustained cut on his left arm as he was trying to protect himself from the mob.
The rowdy scene continued for about 20 minutes and could be brought under control only when the CBI team swiftly sneaked Pandher into a private car and took him to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi. The two were later discharged after first aid and doctors said that the bruises were minor and there was nothing to worry about.
Earlier, the CBI team took Pandher and co-accused Koli to the court of Special Judicial Magistrate Sapna Mishra. The CBI team reached the court at 10.30 am in five cars from the front gate of the court. Keeping in view the heavy rush in the verandah of the court compound, the court was bolted from inside and at 11.00 am, the magistrate, after hearing CBI arguments reserved the judgement on extension of the custody remand and left for her chamber. When the accused were waiting for the judgement, a strong mob barged into the courtroom and started beating Pandher. The television cameras from the verandah took the live shots of the scene.
When some of those in the crowd realised that they were being shot by TV crew, they started hitting the cameramen injuring a television journalist Sunil who sustained injuries on his forehead. The violent mob continued hitting Pandher and Koli for about 20 minutes with the former getting the maximum blows.
Later in the day, son of Pandher, Karan announced from Chandigarh that he would approach Amnesty International for the blatant violation of human rights.
After the lapse of an hour when television channels had aired the scene live, the Bar Association of Ghaziabad realised the gravity of the situation and accused the channels for aggravating the issue and demanded that cameras be sent out of the court compound. A senior lawyer said this was just to save fellow lawyers who had participated in thrashing the accused.
Later, the Special Judicial Magistrate sent the two to CBI custody remand till February 8.
Meanwhile, SSP Ghaziabad Naveen Arora said on the complaint of COII Ram Mohan Singh an FIR had been lodged against seven lawyers in addition to some unidentified criminals under Sections 147, 148, 149, 307, 353, 333, 7 of Criminal Procedure Code and Prevention of Public Property Act. The SSP said he would reveal their names soon. SP City Govind Agarwal had been assigned to inquire into the details and lawyers had been asked to maintain law and order in the court premises.

#1 CS - I remember our poor relations from the country (and if they were poor compared to us, that's poor) bringing Nannie a mess of squirrels a couple of times. She skinned them and floured & fried them for supper. I don't remember the taste, except that they didn't taste odd - just floured/fried meat.
Yes, squirrels are rodents. But they're BIG rodents, and they were free.

Not bad, stewed up with some corn, limas, taters & anything else you have left over. The original Brunswick stew, before folks switched to using chicken in it. I'm sure rat would work fine too. With both rodents, it probably is a good idea not to use the ones caught around a toxic waste dump though.

HUNDREDS of chickens have been found dead in east China and a court has ruled that the cause of death was the screaming of a four-year-old boy who in turn had been scared by a barking dog. The bizarre sequence of events began when the boy arrived at a village home in the eastern province of Jiangsu in the summer with his father who was delivering bottles of gas, the Nanjing Morning Post reported today.
A villager was quoted as saying the little boy bent over the henhouse window, screaming for a long time, after being scared by the dog. "One neighbour told police that he had heard the boy's crying that afternoon and another villager confirmed the boy screaming by the henhouse window," the newspaper said.
A court ruled the boy's screaming was "the only unexpected abnormal sound" and that 443 chickens trampled each other to death in fear. The boy's father was ordered to pay 1800 yuan ($290) in compensation to the owner of the chickens.

JEDDAH, 25 January 2007 After spending up to four years in a local jail, three out of four Filipino workers charged and convicted in 2002 are set to be released. They were charged with stealing equipment from their employer and sentenced to a year and also a year and half in prison not four. Their employer has dropped the charges and a judge signed their release papers on Sunday, according to copies of official documents obtained by Arab News.
Three of the workers (Manuel Fernandez, Julian Camat and Milo Ramos) were sentenced to one year and a half and the fourth (Napoleon Abdullah Fabregas), a Muslim convert, was sentenced to only one year in jail despite the fact that all four were charged with the same crime. Fernandez was released last month after signing a waiver of claims from the company.
The four workers were charged with stealing laptops worth over SR100,000 in December of 2002 while they were working as cargo handlers at King Abdul Aziz International Airport in Jeddah. Despite completing their sentence three and a half years ago, they still remain in Briman Prison.
According to sources, Gabriel Ocampo, another Filipino who was thought to have implicated the four, disappeared when police belatedly went looking for him.
AN Iraqi-trained doctor who claimed to be the victim of an anti-Muslim conspiracy has been jailed for 13 years for drugging and raping a patient.
Rafid Alramadan, 55, was sentenced yesterday in the NSW District Court after he was found guilty of giving a woman in the NSW country town of Grenfell an injection of the stupefying drug valium and having non-consensual sex with her.
The victim, a patient of about 12 months, had visited Alramadan in December 2005 when the surgery was closed to pick up a driver's licence and had asked the doctor to give her a cortisone injection for knee pain.
But rather than administer the drug in the affected area, Alramadan gave her two injections in the arm, which left her feeling "hazy" and too weak to fight him off.
Alramadan then kissed and fondled her before raping her.
He was convicted in September of administering a stupefying drug, aggravated sexual intercourse without consent and aggravated indecent assault.
After being convicted at trial, the doctor accused the judge and jury of racism. Right on cue. It's like a beautiful Busby Berkeley choregraphy.
"This is because I am a Muslim. This is because I am from overseas. They go overseas to kill people, they want to kill me and my children, this is racism," he said.
In court yesterday, Alramadan sat with his head bowed as judge Anthony Puckeridge told him he had brought disgrace on himself and his family.
He said the doctor had abused his patient's trust, and "abused his privileged position in the community by administering a drug for an improper purpose".
During his trial, Alramadan said he had consensual sex with his patient, who he described as uncovered meat a "drug seeker".
Alramadan will be eligible for parole in December 2016, 9 years after the aborted coming of the mahdi, who got stuck in that well.

SHEIK Taj al-Din al-Hilali today denied that he was forced to sneak back into the country when he arrived in Sydney last night - just in time for Australia Day. The sheik avoided waiting media at the airport yesterday, and was ushered through a VIP exit after his plane touched down.

During his absence, Sheik Hilali sparked outrage in Australia with comments in an interview on Egyptian TV. He called Westerners liars and said that Muslims were more entitled to live in Australia than the descendents of Anglo-Saxons sent here as convicts.
The comments followed the stir he caused last year when he compared immodestly dressed women to "uncovered meat".
Senior politicians from both the Labor and Liberal parties reacted to the latest outrage by urging him to stay away from Australia if he didn't like it.
The mufti has also made headlines in recent days over suggestions he would challenge Premier Morris Iemma for the Lakemba seat in the New South Wales state election. Mr Trad also said Sheik Hilali hoped that politicians would abandon their "Islamophobic platform" for Australia Day. "I wish that politicians would take advantage of Australia Day to reaffirm the rights of every Australian citizen. But that's a big call for politicians, especially."
New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says Islamic cleric Sheikh Taj el-din Al Hilali should announce whether or not he is going to run in the state election.
The sheikh arrived back in Sydney last night after a controversial overseas trip where he reportedly told Egyptian television that people who paid to come to Australia had more of a right to be here than those brought in shackles.
Sheikh Hilali was escorted through an exit to avoid the waiting media but the Premier says he should face them.
"He could've stood up and made himself available," Mr Iemma said.
"I note that he's not shy in making himself available to media when he's overseas, [but] it seems he was a bit shy in making himself available last night.
"Is he going to run? Are we going to have Hilali independents and if so tell us because as I said if you want a challenge then bring it on."

Forty-seven-year-old Altab Hussain crossed over to this side in the hope that he would be picked up by the BSF, sent to jail and subsequently to hospital. Hussains task, however, became difficult when none of the security forces, neither police nor the BSF, spotted him when he crossed the border at Hili, 26 km from here.
Finding no other option, Hussain turned himself over at the Balurghat police station a few weeks ago. From then, he has been at the district hospital, being treated for an ailing heart.
I had come to the jail several months ago (under another name). Recently, I started having chest pain again and visited the Dinajpur district hospital in Bangladesh. Doctors wanted to refer me to Dhaka Medical College. But there, I would have had to shell out Taka 2 lakh (a little less than Rs 1.3 lakh). I am a mere fish trader and cant afford to spend so much. The best option, I decided, would be to return to an Indian jail, said Hussain.
The doctors here have apparently told Hussain that he is responding to treatment.
Fatema Bibis case is a bit different. The mentally-challenged woman was pushed into India by her relatives and is currently under treatment at North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri.
Most of these infiltrators go back at the end of a three-month sentence. Till their return to Bangladesh, all expenses are borne by the Indian government, unlike the thousands who go without free medical aid in rural Bengal.
Last week, another Bangladeshi infiltrator, Saifur Rehman, was released and sent back to Bangladesh.
Jail sources said he was suffering from frequent bouts of headaches for which he underwent a CT scan at the north Bengal medical college.
Records show that of the 474 Bangladeshis in the jail here, 112 have received medical attention (see chart).
The superintendent of the district jail, M. Guin, said: We are duty-bound to arrange for treatment as soon as a prisoner falls ill Bangladeshi or otherwise.
He admitted that many people from adjoining Dinajpur, Naogaon and Joypurhat districts of Bangladesh sneak into India and court arrest for free treatment. Hussain is only one of them.

A 17-year-old girl was shot to death by her father in one of the southern governorates on Tuesday night in what official sources said was a crime of honour. The minor was shot four times in the head at her home, one official source said.
The victims father turned himself in to police shortly after the incident, claiming he killed his teenage daughter to cleanse his familys honour, the source said. The suspect told police during questioning that his daughter went missing from her house for two weeks, according to a second source. It was not clear why the teenager left home or where she stayed during that period. Police found the girl almost two weeks ago and handed her over to her parents after undergoing a virginity examination by government physicians, the source said. The examination showed the victim was not involved in any sexual activity, the source added.

"The tests proved that she was a virgin," the pathologist said. The girl returned home only after her father signed a statement promising not to harm her, he added.
The father shot the girl four times in the head on Tuesday. On Wednesday, an autopsy was performed that again showed "she was still a virgin," the pathologist said.
Authorities have not disclosed the names of the father or the daughter or even their hometown, saying only that they lived in a southern province.
The crime is the first "honor killing" this year in Jordan, where many men consider sex out of wedlock to be an almost indelible stain on a family's reputation. On average, about 20 women in the country are killed by their relatives in such cases each year. Women have been killed for simply dating.
Global human rights organizations have condemned such killings and appealed to King Abdullah II to put an end to them.
In response, the government has abolished a section in the penal code that allowed for "honor" killers to get sentences as lenient as six months in prison. Instead, the government has told judges to consider honor killings on a par with other homicides, which in Jordan are punishable by up to 15 years in jail.
But attempts to introduce harsher sentences have been blocked by conservative lawmakers who argue that tougher penalties would lead to promiscuity.

California regulators approved rules Thursday banning power companies from buying electricity from high-polluting sources, including most out-of-state coal-burning plants. The rules - aimed at reducing emissions of heat-trapping gases linked to global warming - could have a far-reaching effect on the energy market across the West. While there are almost no coal-fired plants in California, the nation's most populous state, about 20 percent of the state's electricity comes from coal plants in other Western states.
"It represents a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to address the challenge of climate change," said Michael Peevey, president of the Public Utilities Commission. The commission voted 4-0 to prohibit utilities and other energy providers from entering into long-term contracts with sources that emit more carbon dioxide than a modern natural gas plant.
The new standard is aimed at encouraging investment in cleaner energy sources such as wind and solar, while discouraging the use of coal and other high-polluting fuels. The rule is expected to take effect Feb. 1. Um, nuclear power? Anyone?
A landmark global warming bill Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed into law last year required the commission to adopt emissions standards for utilities. The Public Utilities Commission regulates the state's three investor-owned utilities from which most Californians get their power. The California Energy Commission is drawing up a similar emissions standard for municipal utilities.
