65 year old male American Airlines FA dies from COVID-19 or something
[WSOCTV] PHILADELPHIA, Pa. ‐ American Airlines flight attendants are sharing their concerns after one of their co-workers tested positive for the coronavirus and then died.

Paul Frishkorn, 65, was a Philadelphia-based flight attendant for American Airlines.

Officials said he had other health issues that made him a higher-risk patient.

Possible funeral urn shortage in Wuhan, China
[World Tribune] Thousands of urns have reportedly been delivered to funeral homes in Wuhan, China, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak. Photos and information circulating on Chinese social media indicate there are long lines of people picking up cremated ashes.

The reports call into question the Chinese communist government’s official figures of 2,535 people in Wuhan who have died of the virus, Bloomberg reported on Friday.

Trucks shipped in about 2,500 urns on both Wednesday and Thursday to the Wuhan funeral homes, according to Chinese media outlet Caixin. A photo published by Caixin showed 3,500 urns stacked on the ground inside. It’s unclear how many of the urns had been filled.

The report noted that people who answered the phone at six of the eight funeral homes in Wuhan said they either did not have data on how many urns were waiting to be collected, or were not authorized to disclose the numbers. Calls were not answered at the other two.

Some families said they had been forced to wait for several hours to pick up the ashes.

Two locals in Wuhan who have lost family members to the virus said online that they were informed they had to be accompanied by their employers or officials from neighborhood committees when picking up the urns, likely as a measure against public gatherings.

"I was told by district government to wait until further notice on when I can pick up my father’s ashes," one Wuhan resident using the name "Xue Zai Shou Zhong," meaning "snow in hand," posted on Weibo. "There is a staggered arrangement for urn collecting."

Another Weibo user using the handle Adagier said she lost her husband to the coronavirus and had since been contacted by police warning her not to be too emotional ‐ and to stop posting online.

"I have only one demand," she wrote. "I want to give my husband a proper burial as soon as possible."

China had reported that its tally of new cases in Wuhan had hit zero and the lockdown in place on the city of 11 million people since January would be lifted.

MS Zaandam - Unable to dock at any local ports. 1800 on board, 138 are sick, 4 are dead
[Business Insider] Four passengers have died aboard Holland America Line's stranded MS Zaandam cruise ship, according to a recording leaked to Business Insider from a sister ship sent to rescue healthy passengers.

"I am also sad to share that four older Zaandam guests have passed away," the captain of the MS Rotterdam said in the recording of a shipwide announcement provided to Business Insider. "Three between yesterday and last night, and one a few days ago. Our thoughts and prayers are with their families, and the Zaandam team is doing everything they can to support them during this difficult time."

A Holland America crew member sent Business Insider a recording of the Rotterdam's captain announcing the deaths, as well as news from medical staffers confirming at least two cases of COVID-19 aboard the Zaandam.

The Rotterdam rendezvoused with the Zaandam on Thursday night off the coast of Ecuador to deliver medical supplies, including COVID-19 tests. The Rotterdam has no guests on board, but crew members on the ship have said it is staffed with 611 people.

According to a memo leaked by a Rotterdam crew member, the ship is now also tasked with rescuing healthy Zaandam guests.

The crew member sent Business Insider pictures of a printed memo dated Wednesday and titled "Rotterdam Humanitarian Mission FAQ." The rescue-response memo began with the question "Why do we need to do this?"

Top Republican calls for global investigation into China's 'dangerous disinformation campaign' about coronavirus
[Washington Examiner] A top House Republican wants to see the U.S. lead an international investigation into the Chinese Communist Party’s "dangerous disinformation campaign" about the origins of the coronavirus.

Texas Rep. Michael McCaul, the ranking member on the Foreign Affairs Committee, made the request of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a letter sent on Thursday.

"I recommend that you consider pursuing a multilateral investigation into the CCP’s coronavirus coverup, which will underscore that their pandemic-enabling malfeasance is not just an American concern, but a global one," McCaul said. "To refute the CCP’s dangerous disinformation campaign, the United States should work with like-minded democracies, including Taiwan, to produce a definitive account of the origins of the virus, the CCP’s culpability, and whether CCP influence undermined the legitimacy of the WHO at this critical time."

The State Department declined the Washington Examiner’s request for comment, but Pompeo recently spoke forcefully on the issue.

"The Chinese Communist Party poses a substantial threat to our health and way of life, as the Wuhan virus outbreak clearly has demonstrated," Pompeo said following the G7 teleconference summit this week.

Western officials say top Beijing diplomats and Chinese state-run outlets have repeatedly pushed disinformation about the coronavirus’s origins, including blaming the U.S. military.

"The Chinese Communist Party lied and covered up the truth about the coronavirus," McCaul told the Washington Examiner. "Because of their actions, the disease has spread throughout the world sickening hundreds of thousands of people and killing tens of thousands."

Pompeo has repeatedly admonished the Chinese government for its denials about the coronavirus’s origins, and insists on calling the illness the "Wuhan coronavirus."

Michigan Democrat Governor Threatens Licenses of Doctors and Pharmacists Who Prescribe Hydroxychloroquine
[THECONSERVATIVETREEHOUSE] Governor Gretchen Whitmer from the Michigan Directorate has threatened to turn the eye of the state upon any doctor or pharmacist who would attempt to prescribe chloroquine to treat their patients suffering from coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
. Medical licenses may need to be revoked.

The agency’s March 24 letter warns physicians and pharmacists of professional consequences for the prescribing of hydroxychloroquine (and chloroquine). Beyond the rational recommendation against hoarding, the letter includes threats of "administrative action" against the licenses of doctors that prescribe hydroxychloroquine.

Pangolins can carry coronavirus-related strains
[FOXNEWS] Scientists have identified coronavirus-related strains in Malayan pangolins seized during anti-smuggling operations in southern China. pandemic.

Members of the House of Representatives shouted down Rep. Thomas Massie as they passed the coronavirus stimulus bill ‐ with one politician bellowing "f‐k you!" at the Kentucky Republican.

Massie forced hundreds of politicians to return to the House chamber for the vote after indicating he would raise a point of order that fewer than 50 percent of politicians were present as required.

But when the libertarian engineer stood to protest that the chamber was not full, a furious colleague shouted "look around!"

Surrounding Massie were hundreds of Republicans and Democrats who packed into the chamber and also the public viewing gallery one floor above to maintain enough distance to avoid spread of COVID-19.

#1  Well, I thought that Chinese having a complete genome in a week was awfully quick.

And the spike protein's efficiency could come from "natural" selection - although we've seen no supporting evidence (as it was evolving, it'd caused widespread disease). Or it could be refined in a lab by exploiting molecular cloning techniques.

India-Pakistan
Potential Vaccine Candidates Identified
[OpIndia] Dr. Seema Mishra, faculty of the Department of Biochemistry, School of Life Sciences, University of Hyderabad (UoH) has designed potential vaccine candidates which are called T cell epitopes believed to be working against all the structural and non-structural proteins of novel coronavirus-2(2019-nCoV) for experimental testing. The candidates of the vaccine are small coronaviral peptides, molecules that will be used by cells to trigger an immune response to destroy cells harbouring these viral peptides.

Dr. Seema Mishra has designed these potential epitopes in a way that can be used to vaccinate the entire population by using powerful immunoinformatics approaches with computational software.

Normally, a discovery of vaccine takes an elongated tenure of upto 15 years but the powerful computational tools helped in enlisting these vaccine candidates in a minimal time of about 10 days. A list of potential candidates, which are based on how much effect they will be used by human cells to stop the virus, has been generated. These coronaviral epitopes pose no cross-reactivity to human cells and hence the immune response will be against viral proteins and not human proteins as there are no matches in the human protein pool.

The study states that "that surface (spike) and membrane proteins of nCoV provide with very less number of promiscuous epitopes
Can we call them Ilhantopes?
with high degree of unique epitopes across alleles. This shows that these proteins may be less immunogenic and the vaccination strategy using these proteins may not work at entire population level across continents."

The results have been disseminated to the scientist community using the ChemRxiv preprint platform for urgent experimental essays.

These are the first such studies on nCoV vaccine design from India exploring whole coronaviral proteome across structural and non-structural proteins that make up the virus.

Still, right now the best defence to prevent nCoV infections is social distancing. Vaccination may take some time due to the need for further work on these candidate epitopes.

#8  I may be mistaken, grom. I'm only aware of the exchanges and discussions, can't understand jack of the science.

For sure, the initial data sent from China early in January to everyone was faulty and the Migal Galilee people first responded to this. So they may be the first to have the right sequence.

The sequence when remapped was found in-congruent with the Chinese data, and quite a lot of people across the world were angry, but the chinese said 'ho-hum, technical error' or something like it.

I don't know about the institute's current progress. Now this gal in Hyderabad's sent her findings to everyone in the world.

Report: Coronavirus lab results halted for fear of data error
[YNet] - The Ministry of Health has temporarily instructed HMO managers not to report subjects to the coronavirus about the results of their examination for fear of incorrect results.

An internal message stated that "the lab results may be incorrect." The Ministry of Health said that "due to a computer problem that was discovered Friday night in the data transfer, the lab results are delayed. The lab work continues as usual on Saturday and so is the testing by MDA. Teams from the Ministry of Health and the Prime Minister's Office are currently working on a solution."

Iranian media reports nearly 300 people have been killed and more than 1,000 sickened by ingesting toxic methanol across the Islamic Republic out of the false belief it kills the new coronavirus. https://t.co/tUjo8TI0aP
- The Associated Press (@AP) March 27, 2020

The misinformation stemmed from a tabloid story published in early February which claimed that a British man cured himself of Coronavirus infection by drinking whiskey with honey. Many believe that using alcohol-based sanitizer to ward off germs is akin to drinking alcohol to cure Coronavirus infection.
Health Ministry Adviser Dr Hossein Hassanian said, "Other countries have only one problem, which is the new coronavirus pandemic. But we are fighting on two fronts here. We have to both cure the people with alcohol poisoning and also fight the coronavirus.

Consumption of alcohol is banned in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
From the incessant twaddle they spout I woulda thunk they were high all the time.
It is mandatory for manufacturers of methanol to add artificial colour to their products for public convenience. Bootleggers, however, add bleach to these products such that it dilutes the artificial colour. Due to a growing demand for alcohol, bootleggers often sell methanol to its customers instead of ethanol. This explains the steep rise in cases of methanol poisoning.
A country where everyone's a genius !

#2  Luckily, our state Governor has banned the use of hydroxychloroquine so the citizens of Michigan don't have to worry about receiving what appears to be an effective treatment.

#3  Raoult's study had no control group.

I can understand his reasoning (not ethical to deny treatment likely to be effective). However, that does leave a hole.

Rhode Island Police to Hunt Down New Yorkers Seeking Refuge
h/t Instapundit
[Bloomberg] - Rhode Island police began stopping cars with New York plates Friday. On Saturday, the National Guard will help them conduct house-to-house searches to find people who traveled from New York and demand 14 days of self-quarantine.

"Right now we have a pinpointed risk," Governor Gina Raimondo said. "That risk is called New York City."

New York is the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S., on Friday reporting a total of 44,000 cases.

Professors Worry Their Bias Will Be Exposed by Online Classes
[Breitbart] Professors are now worried that the political bias they bring to the classroom will be easily recorded and exposed to the public now that their courses have been moved online due to the Wuhan coronavirus.

"The coronavirus-prompted shift to remote teaching was stressful enough for faculty members before Charlie Kirk weaponized online learning," reported the Chronicle of Higher Education on Tuesday, noting a recent tweet by the Turning Point USA (TPUSA) founder calling on students to share videos of their professors’ "blatant indoctrination."

"To all college students who have their professors switching to online classes: Please share any and ALL videos of blatant indoctrination with [TPUSA]," tweeted Kirk on Sunday, including his organization’s contact information.

"Now is the time to document & expose the radicalism that has been infecting our schools," added the TPUSA founder. "Transparency!"

Kirk’s call to action has caused some faculty members "to be worried," according to the Chronicle of Higher Education, which added that some professors have said that they are taking precautions, such as professor Dylan Bugden of Washington State University, who says that he has decided not to record his lectures.

With regards to the possibility of professors’ course material being exposed by students, Jeffrey A. Sachs, a lecturer at Acadia University, in Canada, tweeted, "Simply put, faculty are alarmed because they are paying attention."

Professor Jason Stanley of Yale University also chimed in regarding how to prepare against conservatives seeking to showcase leftist bias in higher education.

"If one of your colleagues gets hit, support them," said Stanley. "It is not a time to lecture them about you think they did wrong. They need your support, not your moralizing and sanctimoniousness."

"If you are recording a lecture on anything controversial, be prepared for right wing sites to ask students to share it," said Texas Christian University associate professor Emily Farris, reported Breitbart News on Monday.

As for TPUSA, the conservative student organization says that if professors are already confident in what they espouse in the classroom, then they should have no problem with their course materials being made public.

"Taking all classes online presents an opportunity for professor biases to be exposed for the world to see. If professors don’t have anything to hide, there isn’t an issue," said a TPUSA spokesperson to Breitbart News.

"For those that are using the classroom to intimidate conservatives or otherwise lie to, bully, or indoctrinate students to hate America, we will highlight those cases so parents, students, administrations and donors can make better, more informed decisions moving forward," the spokesperson added.

"Knowing the truth shouldn’t be controversial," the TPUSA spokesperson affirmed.
