Police Seek Male Staffers' DNA At Center Where Patient In Vegetative State Gave Birth
[NPR.ORG] Phoenix police are collecting DNA evidence from all male employees of Hacienda HealthCare, where a patient in a vegetative state gave birth to a child Dec. 29.

Police served the long-term care facility with a search warrant on Tuesday, The News Agency that Dare Not be Named reported. "We will continue to cooperate with Phoenix Police and all other investigative agencies to uncover the facts in this deeply disturbing, but unprecedented situation," Hacienda Healthcare said in a statement.

The care facility had considered conducting its own DNA tests, but its attorneys advised that genetic testing of its employees would violate federal law, the company said, according to The Arizona Republic.

"The family obviously is outraged, traumatized and in shock by the abuse and neglect of their daughter at Hacienda Healthcare," said John Micheaels, who represents the family of the woman, according to the New York Times

...which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

. "The family would like me to convey that the baby boy has been born into a loving family and will be well cared for."

More details were released Tuesday night about the woman's identity. Officials from the San Carlos Apache Tribe in Arizona say the woman is a member of their tribe and confirmed she "has been in a persistent vegetative state and coma for over a decade," according to a statement obtained by local TV station 12News.

On Monday, Hacienda's longtime CEO, Bill Timmons, resigned as police continue to investigate how a woman who wasn't able to consent to sex was impregnated.

The woman had been a patient at the Phoenix facility for years after almost drowning, according to azfamily.com, which broke the story; police declined to provide NPR with details about their investigation. Staff members reportedly hadn't noticed the patient was pregnant until she went into labor.

#2  They better upload babies DNA to gedmatch.com, too. Male staffers of course are suspect, but so are any male visitors to the facility whether they were linked to patient or not. The father might even turn out to be a tribal member.

#3  Dear Happy Acres et al,

I, -----, cheerfully, voluntarily submit to DNA testing upon satisfaction of all following conditions:

1. Submission of signed apologies from all relevant parties to all tested employees.

2. Ditto exculpatory press releases ditto.

3. Agreement among all parties as to cash value of tested employees' genetic info, such amount to be placed in escrow, returnable in ten years upon submission of proof that all employees' info has been securely deleted and not been released to any party whatsoever, intentionally, unintentionally, or inadvertently, during that decade.

4. Submission of negative test results for all patient's male relatives and visitors, and for all male others, significant or insignificant, of all female relatives and visitors.

5. Don't start me talkin'...

Yours most sincerely,

#4  I'm guessing the victim wasn't obese. All the staff must have known. How does a baby work its way out with the mother in a prone position? I'm guessing staff must have tried to deliver it but had a problem. Maybe they were going to have the baby adopted? Who would be in a position that they would go to such lengths to protect? Maybe not, but we'll see.

#6  Maybe they were going to have the baby adopted? If mother is enrolled in a federally recognized tribe, federal laws affect the adoption process of any of her children. Mother not being competent is another issue that (most likely) federal courts will be involved in.

[FOXBALTIMORE] Southwestern Regional Police announced Monday that they've arrested a wanted fugitive out of Baltimore in Spring Grove, Pa. Police say Anthony "Doo-Doo Butt" Ward, 21, was apprehended on the 400 block of N. Pine Ave on Dec. 26, 2018.
Gangsters' nicks have sure gone downhill since my day.
Ward was wanted for Attempted 1st Degree Murder for his involvement in a road-rage style shooting, according to police.
His sidekick, "Poo Poo Pants" Dudley is still on the run.
The SWRPD, along with officers from Baltimore City PD and U.S. Marshals took Ward into custody without incident.
They tossed him into the same cell with "Farty Heinie" Jones.

Thirty legendary T-34 tanks returned to Russia by Laos
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Lao People’s Democratic Republic has returned 30 legendary T-34-85 tanks to the Russian Federation, as shown in footage shot in Vladivostok and released on Wednesday.

“These T-34-85 [tanks] were returned to the Russian Federation in the full working order. They are ready to be used which means that they did not lose their combat capacity and their combat power,” General-major Alexander Khanov, head of the Armoured Automobile Service, said.

The tanks have been in active service in Laos since 1987. Following a visit by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu in January last year, the two countries agreed that the vehicles would be returned to Russia.

The tanks will be transported to Naro-Fominsk in the Moscow Region, after which they are expected to be used as museum exhibits, film props and participate in parades.

If you thought you saw a drip pan under some of those vehicles and aircraft, you were correct.

Calling all divorce lawyers! $$$
[NY POST] Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and wife MacKenzie announce divorce on Twitter.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and his wife, MacKenzie, are divorcing after 25 years of marriage, the couple announced Wednesday.

“We want to make people aware of a development in our lives,” tweeted Bezos, the world’s richest person. “As our family and close friends know, after a long period of loving exploration and trial separate, we have decided to divorce and continue our shared lives as friends.”

He continued: “We feel incredibly lucky to have found each other and deeply grateful for every one of the years we have been married to each other. If we had known we would separate after 25 years, we would do it all again.”

The 54-year-old sits at the top of Forbes world’s billionaires ranking, with a real-time worth of $137.4 billion.

It’s unclear if the couple has a prenuptial agreement.

They reside in Washington state, which is a “community property state” — meaning divorcing couples without a prenup split assets 50-50, TMZ reported.

The Bezos own five homes in Medina, Washington, Beverly Hills, Van Horn, Texas, DC and Manhattan — making Jeff the 25th biggest landowner in the nation, Business Insider said.

The couple met in New York at hedge fund D.E. Shaw when Jeff, the company’s vice president, interviewed MacKenzie for a job, according to Business Insider.

Enraged Man Kills Lover For Sipping Jameson Whisky Without His Approval, blames culture
[International Bus Times] A man murdered his lover for opening a bottle of Jameson whisky without the former's approval. The incident took place on New Year's Day in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Police have identified the suspect as a 35-year-old man hailing from Tswelopele region, near Midrand city. The deceased has been identified as 27-year-old Palesa Moloi. Authorities said the suspect stabbed the victim several times for failing to treat him as the head of the family and disregarding his authority.

According to pulse.com.gh, the man had earlier warned the woman about the consequences of opening the bottle first. He is believed to have told her that it was he alone, who was scheduled to do the honors and share it with the other family members. However, upon finding that the lady had already taken a sip from the bottle, murdered her.

Police said they found the man at the scene of the crime, staring at the corpse, while in an inebriated state.

"When police interrogated him, he told them he killed the woman because she opened his bottle of whiskey and drank some while he was not around. The website quoted Captain Bernard Matimulane as saying. "He told the cops only he, as the head of the household, was entitled to open the liquor. He claimed it was his culture."

The incident has shocked both the victim's father, Geelbooi Moloi and the acting Ivory Park station commander, Colonel Baba Mpotoane.

"We are saddened by women being killed by people who are supposed to love and protect them," Mpotoane said.

The suspect is presently placed under police detention and is awaiting trail.

Caribbean-Latin America
Maduro issues threat to 'interventionist' regional rivals
[PULSE.NG] Venezuela President Nicolas Maduro is threatening "diplomatic measures" against those countries refusing to acknowledge his second term in office.

Maduro is due to be sworn in for his second term on Thursday, after winning a highly controversial snap election last May.

Last week, a band of 14 countries from the Americas, known as the Lima Group, called on Maduro to step down and hand power to Venezuela's sidelined, opposition-controlled parliament ahead of "democratic elections."

At a presser, an angry Maduro slammed the "interventionist and rude policy" of the Lima Group and vowed to "defend the national interests."

He warned his government would "take the most immediate and crude diplomatic measures" should those governments fail to change their position on Caracas "within 48 hours."

Maduro accused the bloc of paying lip service to the United States and was particularly angered by the Lima Group's support for Guyana, one of its members, in a territorial dispute with Venezuela.

The Lima Group's declaration -- signed by 13 of its 14 members as Mexico abstained -- rejects any "provocation or military deployment" by Venezuela that could "threaten peace or the region."

It also called on Maduro to refrain from "acts that violate the sovereign rights of his neighbors" -- a reference to the Venezuelan navy's interception last month of two vessels doing seismic studies for US oil giant ExxonMobil in an area that is disputed by Caracas and Guyana.

NEW TERM SET TO BEGIN
On Thursday, Maduro will be sworn in by Venezuela's Supreme Court, rather than parliament, as is customary.

He won a snap election last year that was boycotted by the opposition and branded fraudulent by the US, European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and Organization of American States.

Since then, he created a Constituent Assembly made up of regime loyalists to replace the elected National Assembly that he had lost control of in 2016.

While the National Assembly still sits, all of its decisions are annulled by the Supreme Court, which is also made up of Maduro allies.

The National Assembly nevertheless has declared that it remains the only legitimate institution in Venezuela, and that it would instill a "transitional government" ahead of new elections.

However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
Maduro has the backing not just of the Supreme Court and Constituent Assembly, but also the armed forces, which issued a statement on Tuesday declaring its "unrestricted support and absolute loyalty" to him.

His detractors blame him for Venezuela's economic woes, which have left millions in poverty while another 2.3 million, according to the United Nations
...an organization conceived in the belief that we're just one big happy world, with the sort of results you'd expect from such nonsense...
, have fled the country since 2015.

Those remaining behind face shortages of basic necessities such as food and medicine, as well as failing public services including water, electricity and transport.

Russian Patriarch Says Smart Phones Are Herald of Antichrist
[Breitbart] The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church said that the Antichrist will run the “world wide web” and that powerful data-gathering devices are a harbinger of his arrival.

In an interview aired Monday on Russian state television, Patriarch Kirill said that the church does not oppose technological advances but warned against “falling into slavery” to smartphones.

The patriarch expressed concern that with the proliferation of cell phones “someone can know exactly where you are, know exactly what you are interested in, know exactly what you are afraid of” and that this knowledge of “location, interests, and fears” could be employed for centralized world domination.

China-Japan-Koreas
WSJ: Behind Xi's Bluster Is a Vulnerable China - Trump's policies have America surging, while Chinese growth could slow further still.
[WSJ] President Xi Jinping observed the 40th anniversary of China’s shift from doctrinaire communism to quasi-capitalist totalitarianism by delivering a televised speech last month in unyielding authoritarian language. Yet his forceful posturing couldn’t hide his concern. America’s main economic rival is under real pressure to give up many of the mercantilist policies it has relied on for decades to prop up growth.

Like his predecessors, Mr. Xi insists that China’s Communist Party has been "totally correct" over the past 40 years. "No one is in the position to dictate to the Chinese people what should and should not be done," he declared. He praised Marxist-Leninist principles and quoted Friedrich Engels as he envisioned China’s socialist path through the 21st century.

This bluster is typical for a regime deeply concerned about appearing weak. President Trump’s trade policies have put heavy pressure on the sore spots of China’s economy.

With per capita gross domestic product just above $10,000, China must sustain far more rapid growth than the U.S., where GDP per person is about $62,000. But the Chinese economy is losing momentum. The People’s Bank of China reported in October that economic growth had slowed to 6.5%‐below expectations and the lowest rate since the financial crisis. Meanwhile, December saw China’s first decrease in manufacturing activity since 2016 as new export orders declined for the seventh month in a row.

Things are likely worse than these numbers indicate. Economists have long disputed the accuracy of China’s official economic data. Production reports for state-run industries have begun to go "missing" in recent months, presumably because they reveal that companies haven’t met the government’s aggressive targets. In September Beijing sent a directive to journalists listing topics it intended to "manage," including "worse-than-expected data that could show the economy is slowing" and "the impact of the trade war with the United States."

The trends concern China’s leaders. One official told Bloomberg News last month that "many people are worried the private sector is in retreat as the government steers policy support toward state-owned enterprises." These large, inefficient and uncompetitive enterprises have always weighed down China’s economy, as the state ignores market demand and directs huge amounts of capital into selected industries for its own reasons.

The U.S. economy, on the other hand, is on an upward trajectory. While concerns about an economic slowdown have roiled stock markets, consumer spending remains strong. Holiday-season consumer spending was the highest in six years, according to Mastercard SpendingPulse. This should come as no surprise, because more Americans are working. Wages rose 3.2% in December, the largest gains since April 2009. With more workers earning higher wages and taking home more of what they earn‐thanks to the Republican tax cuts‐they’re spending and driving economic growth.

As a result, growth in 2018 was likely at least 3% for the first time since 2005, and, despite market turmoil, the odds of a recession this year are close to zero. The St. Louis Federal Reserve maintains an economic model that predicts the probability of a U.S. recession. The most recent update, in January, put the risk at less than 1%.

Despite market concerns, the trade war’s impact on U.S. growth has been far less than anticipated. In September Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell stated that notwithstanding concerns like supply-chain disruption, materials cost increases, and loss of overseas markets, "it’s hard to see much happening at this point." In fact, "you can ask, if all of the tariffs that have been announced are applied, what would be the effect at the aggregate level? And they’re still relatively small."

U.S. exports to China totaled $130 billion in 2017, or about 0.6% of America’s $21 trillion economy, while imports from China (which lower U.S. GDP) totaled $506 billion, about 2.4% of the U.S. economy. It should be fairly obvious who has the most to lose from a failure to reach what President Trump has called a "real deal" on trade.

Mr. Xi’s speech was intended to reinforce the myth of an invincible Chinese dragon capable of bullying America into submission with its economic clout. The bluster is a sign of economic weakness. President Trump’s trade strategy has exposed China’s vulnerability, demonstrating the risks of going toe-to-toe with a determined opponent that happens to be your largest customer.

Cyber
German hacker behind massive political data leak identified
[DW] German authorities say a 20-year-old, acting alone, was behind a huge leak of personal data concerning leading politicians and celebrities. The man has confessed, but questions remain about German cybersecurity.

Germany's investigative police force, the BKA, has nabbed
Please don't kill me!
the hacker responsible for what some have called one of the largest data leaks in Germany's history. The 20-year-old from the western German state of Hesse could now face charges of stealing and illegally publishing private data.

"The suspect was questioned on January 7 by the responsible prosecutor and BKA officials," the BKA announced in a statement. "He extensively confessed to the accusations against him and provided helpful information beyond his own crimes."

According to the BKA, the suspect said he was acting alone, and there are no indications of anyone else or any foreign state being involved. The BKA said the suspect had indicated he was motivated by "anger at the public statements of the politicians, journalists and public figures concerned."

The published material included personal data from Chancellor Angela Merkel
...chancellor of Germany and the impetus behind Germany's remarkably ill-starred immigration program. Merkel used to be referred to by Germans as Mom. Now they make faces at her for inundating the country with Moslems ..
and other politicians, celebrities and journalists. Hundreds of politicians from all political parties except the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) were affected.

But BKA President Holger Munch said authorities were not treating the hack as a political crime and that the suspect had no known ties to right-wing extremism in Germany.

The BKA said the suspect's apartment had been searched on Sunday, after which he was taken into custody. The home of a 19-year-old man in Heilbronn, a town north of Stuttgart, who had contact with the hacker was also searched. He is cooperating with authorities as a witness.

The German government has repeatedly been targeted by hacks in recent years, and calls for Seehofer to resign over his handling of this and other issues are growing louder. The minister stressed that most victims had very little sensitive data stolen.

Australian police investigate suspicious packages sent to diplomatic missions
Follow-up to this report from yesterday. Moved to P.3: Non-WoT because it wasn’t a serious attack.
[AlAhram] Police in Australia are investigating suspicious packages sent to a wide range of embassies and consulates on Wednesday, which officials said included the U.S. and British missions in Melbourne, but there were no reports of harm to staff.

Domestic media reported more than a dozen foreign offices received the packages and that some staff said they contained asbestos, a material used in building that can cause cancers and other health problems.

There were no details of any possible motive and some of the targeted sites that Rooters news hounds visited were open later on Wednesday afternoon.

"The packages are being examined by attending emergency services," the Australian Federal Police (AFP) said in a short statement.

It said the packages were sent to consulates in Melbourne and embassies in Canberra but did not provide a total number of affected sites or identify any of them.

"The circumstances surrounding the incidents are being investigated," the AFP statement said.

Officials at the U.S. and British consulates in Melbourne separately confirmed suspicious packages had been received.

"We handled the package according to our standard procedures and in close coordination with local authorities ... who are investigating the incident," a front man for the U.S. Consulate said.

A New Zealand official told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation the consulate received an envelope with small plastic bags that appeared to contain concrete and asbestos, with "asbestos" written on one of the bags.

The Age newspaper reported that one firefighter was seen outside the South Korean consulate carrying a large plastic bag with the word "asbestos" written on it.

Other consulates in Melbourne reported by media to have received suspicious packages included those representing Greece, Italia, Spain, Thailand, India, Japan, Pakistain, Egypt, Denmark and Switzerland
...home of the Helvetians, famous for cheese, watches, yodeling, and William Tell...
. Rooters could not confirm the reports.

Pemra asks TV channels to observe decency in non-news content
[DAWN] The electronic media regulator has advised television channels to observe decency in their non-news content.

In an advice issued to all TV channels, the Pakistain Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) on Tuesday asked them not to air dramas containing controversial themes, indecent clothing and gestures, controversial plots (involving infidelity and extramarital affairs, etc) and unnecessary details of events.

"Such content is not only distressing for viewers but is also against the commonly accepted standards of decency," the Pemra advice said.

The regulator said the trend of airing quite bold themes in dramas had resulted in massive public complaints on the Pakistain Citizen Portal (PCP), Pemra Complaints Call Centre and Feedback System as well as on social media.

The Pemra statement said that viewers had severely criticised the content being telecast, and their opinion was that dramas were not depicting the true picture of Pak society.

"Indecent scenes, dialogues, extramarital relations, violence, inappropriate dressing, rape scenes, bed scenes, use of drugs and alcohol, and intimate moments between couples are being glamorised in utter disregard of Pak culture and values," Pemra said.

UN Says Saudi Teen Fleeing Family is Refugee, Australia to Consider Settlement
[AnNahar] "The UNHCR has referred Ms Rahaf Mohammed al-Qunun to Australia for consideration for refugee resettlement," the Department of Home Affairs confirmed in a statement.

The decision marks a significant victory for the 18-year-old, who is currently in Bangkok where she says Thai authorities attempted to block her from travelling to Australia to claim asylum.

The home affairs department said it will "consider this referral in the usual way, as it does with all UNHCR referrals".

Australian officials have strongly hinted that Qunun's request will be accepted.

"If she is found to be a refugee, then we will give very, very, very serious consideration to a humanitarian visa," health minister Greg Hunt had said before the UN determination was public.

Qunun has documented her bid to flee her allegedly abusive family with minute-by-minute social media updates.

Her plight shot to public attention when she barricaded herself in a Bangkok airport hotel room to avoid deportation and shared dozens of fearful but defiant messages online insisting on her right to asylum.

Portland State Univ. professor to face discipline for exposing shoddy scholarship
Follow-up to an earlier article posted at Rantburg
[WashingtonTimes] A scholar whose carefully crafted fiction helped expose the rot within some sectors of the modern academy is now under fire from his home, Portland State University, although prominent academics throughout the West have risen to his defense.

Peter Boghossian, an assistant professor of philosophy at Portland State University in Oregon, led a trio of scholars last year who submitted to leading publications what they called "intentionally broken" papers on gender, race and sexuality. Several of the absurd pieces were published.

A U-2 Spy Plane Just Did The Flyover For The College Football National Championship Game
[TheDrive] For us aviation dorks, the flyover before a big game is usually the highlight of the event. But really, who doesn't get chills down their spine when American military aircraft soar overhead after the crescendo of the National Anthem?

Sometimes its USAF F-15 or US Navy F/A-18 fighters, other times it's an armada of Army helicopters, or pretty much anything and everything in between. Even the B-2 has its own tradition of executing the flyover for the Rose Bowl, but I really can't remember when a high-profile game opener was graced by a Dragon Lady‐better known as Lockheed's long-serving and iconic U-2 spy plane. Well, it just happened at the Clemson versus Alabama NCAA National Championship game at Levi Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Check it out for yourself.
Continues.
