Srinagar acid attack survivor identifies main accused, records statement
[GREATERKASHMIR] A Srinagar woman, attacked with acid for rejecting a marriage proposal on February 1, has identified the main accused in the case Sajjad Ahmed Rather in a court here and recorded her statement, officials and her lawyer said on Tuesday.Accompanied by her parents and friends, the woman appeared before the court on Monday at 11.30 am and was subjected to exhaustive cross-examination by the defence lawyers which continued till 4.30 pm, her lawyer Mir Naveed Gul said.

The woman was undergoing treatment at an eye hospital in Chennai. She appeared before the court to record her statement as a witness and identify Rather as the person who threw acid on her face, the officials said.

Gul said the woman was one of the prosecution witnesses mentioned in the charge sheet, filed by the police within three weeks of the incident that took place in downtown Srinagar city.

"We plan to get some more witnesses mentioned in the charge sheet, after which the prosecution will place its final argument. We have been hoping for speedy justice," the lawyer said.

The Jammu and Kashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
Police had filed a 1,000-page charge sheet against three people -- Rather and Mohammad Saleem Kumar, alias Tota, and a juvenile. The police have prayed for the juvenile to be treated as an adult as per the amended Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, wherein youngsters in the age group of 16-18 can be tried under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) if they are accused of heinous crimes.

The accused were charged under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 326-A (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by use of acid) of the IPC.

The charge sheet was filed within three weeks of the incident to ensure swift and exemplary punishment to the accused and to deter those who may be having such "barbaric" tendencies, the officials said.

The maximum punishment under these sections is life sentence and the minimum is 10 years' imprisonment, but the prosecution is pressing for the maximum so that it acts as a deterrent, they said.

The woman, along with her family members, shifted to Chennai for specialised treatment. The expenses were met by a businessman-turned-politician, who prefers anonymity.

Victim families await justice as 2009 Ashura blast case file gathers dust
[DAWN] Senior journalist and Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
bureau chief of Geo News Faheem Siddiqui is busy in planning for the coverage of the religious events of Ashura in the city. However,
we can't all be heroes. Somebody has to sit on the curb and applaud when they go by...
the activity every year reminds him of the painful events of 2009 Muharram he would never want to repeat in his life as a father, but has to go through as a newsman.

"Obviously, it causes pain. I lost my first child on this day. I lost my niece too," says Mr Siddiqui referring to the Ashura kaboom in which more than 45 people were killed on M.A. Jinnah Road on December 28, 2009. Mr Siddiqui’s six-year-old son, Bazil Ahmed Siddiqui, and 13-year-old niece, Anzalna Hanif, were among those killed in the attack.

"We remained issueless for five years after the martyrdom of our son," the 49-year-old tells Dawn in a gagged voice. Then, Allah, the Almighty, blessed us with three kids, all of them are boys," he says. "But, the pain for losing our firstborn still haunts us. If Bazil were alive, he would have been 19 today," adds the father, helplessly.

Mr Siddiqui is among dozens of families of the victims of the tragic incident that shook the nation in general. And they are all awaiting justice for the past 13 years, as the country’s security establishment fails to re-arrest the three Jundullah forces of Evil allegedly involved in the bombing, who had beat feet from the custody of the police days after their arrest.

ANP wants report on 2016 Quetta tragedy implemented
[DAWN] Awami National Party (ANP) president Asfandyar Wali Khan on Monday called for implementing the recommendations mentioned in the report of the inquiry commission headed by Justice Qazi Faez Isa on the terrorist attack on a government hospital in Quetta in which more than 60 lawyers died.

In a statement issued by the party’s information secretary Zahid Khan on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of the Quetta incident, the ANP chief also called for implementing the National Action Plan against terrorism which had been prepared by all political parties of the country with consensus after the terrorist attack on Army Public School in Peshawar.

Mr Khan was of the view that terrorism could be eradicated only through the implementation of the Qazi Faez Isa report in letter and spirit.

He lauded the lawyers’ community for their struggle for the cause of sanctity of the bar and the bench despite facing such tragedies. He said the sacrifices rendered by the lawyers’ community so far in the wake of terrorism in the country would not go in vain.

The ANP chief said the terrorists had eliminated a whole generation of the lawyers in the bloody attack. He said some “conspirators” were still active in the region to destroy peace. He termed the terrorist attack on the lawyers in Quetta one of the biggest tragedies suffered by the country.

On Aug 8, 2016, terrorists struck a government hospital in Quetta where a large number of lawyers had gathered after an attack on Bilal Anwar Kasi, the president of the Balochistan Bar Association at the time.

Taking a suo motu notice, the Supreme Court constituted an inquiry commission under Justice Qazi Faez Isa and the 110-page report of the commission containing some 18 recommendations was published in December 2016.

“The people of Pakistan have been subjected to sustained terrorist attacks, which continue unabated, and deserve answers. Those who have failed the people of Pakistan need to be held accountable. Things cannot go on as they have been. Without top-tier accountability, it is unlikely systemic change will be possible,” stated the report, urging the state to re-exert itself against those spreading hatred and murder.

It also urged the state to strictly abide by the laws, such as the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA), the National Counter-Terrorism Authority Act, the Pakistan Penal Code, and, above all, the Constitution of Pakistan.

The report suggested that the ATA “needs to be enforced, and terrorists/terrorist organisations must be proscribed without delay. They must not be permitted to hold meetings. Those claiming to be members of proscribed organisations should be prosecuted in accordance with the ATA.”

Olde Tyme Religion
‘Primary Suspect' Arrested in Murders of Four Muslim Men in New Mexico is Sunni Muslim Angry Over His Daughter Marrying a Shiite Muslim: Report
Bringing all his Olde Countrie nonsense here.
[Gateway Pundit via Rantingly] On Tuesday 51-year-old Muhammad Syed was taken into custody.

According to New York Time reporter Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs, the suspect in the killings of the four Muslim men is Sunni Muslim and targeted the victims because he was angry over his daughter marrying a Shiite Muslim.

Police arrested Muhammad Syed, 51, and charged him with two of the killings, the New York Times reported.
Procopius2k has more from KRQE:
[KRQE] Albuquerque Police have arrested a suspect in the investigation tied to the murder of four Muslim men. Police say 51-year-old Muhammad Syed was taken into custody last night near Santa Rosa, roughly 118 miles east of Albuquerque.

According to APD, Syed is currently being charged two of the four homicides under investigation. Those include the July 26 shooting of Aftab Hussein and the August 1 shooting of Muhammad Afzaal Hussain. APD says detectives connected Syed to those two cases through bullet casings recovered at the respective crime scenes and several guns recovered in the case.

APD searched Syed’s home near Gibson and Carlisle Monday night at roughly the same time Syed was stopped off of an I-40 exit in Santa Rosa. Multiple guns were found inside Syed’s home, while another gun was found in Syed’s car, according to APD.

“A tip from the community is what helped lead us to this subject, and what helped us eventually find the car that we put out just two days ago to the public,” APD Deputy Commander Kyle Hartsock said. “Hundreds of tips have come in that have been thoroughly reviewed, dozens of interviews took place.”

As police went to serve the search warrant on Syed’s home Monday night, APD says officers observed Syed load items into the grey sedan police were seeking, then leave his home. Police then followed Syed out to Santa Rosa where he was later arrested.

During the news conference, said detectives are still investigating Syed’s possible involvement in two other shooting deaths, including the November killing of Mohammad Zahir Ahmadi and the August 5 murder of Naeem Hussain. Hartsock said, “We think there might be involvement in two other homicide cases, those are still considered open and active, but we’re working on more evidence testing and more interviews to continue to build that case with the prosecutor’s office.”

In all, APD says four Muslim men have been killed in four different shootings since November 2021. They include Mohammad Zahir Ahmadi, 62; Aftab Hussein, 41; Muhammad Afzaal Hussain, 27; and Naeem Hussain, 25.

APD remains reserved about a possible motive in the killings. In a news release, APD said “detectives discovered evidence that shows the offender knew the victims to some extent and an interpersonal conflict may have led to the shooting.” In a news release from the Council on American–Islamic Relations, National Deputy Director Edward Ahmed Mitchell said the group “strongly condemned the anti-Shia hatred that may have motivated the killings.”

“The motives are still being explored, fully, to understand what they are,” Hartsock. “We do have some information about [Shiite/Sunni] events taking place, but we’re not really clear if that was the actual motive or it was part of the motive, or if there’s just a bigger picture that we’re missing, so what’s really important is we’re still investigating it even though he is arrested today, we’re going to continue to investigative and work with our prosecutors to understand what the motives were.”

According to reporting from the New York Times, authorities are exploring possible Sunni/Shiite beliefs among Syed, his family members and the victims. APD acknowledged it has “heard those things,” responding to a question from a reporter about the motive Tuesday. Hartsock could not confirm if Syed was a Sunni Muslim when asked Tuesday.

It’s unclear if anyone else will be charged in the case. APS confirmed Tuesday that Syed’s son were questioned, then released amid the investigation Monday night.

“We’re going to follow the evidence,” Hartsock said. “If the evidence leads us to someone else that needs charges, we’ll be happy to file them with the [district attorney’s] office.”

APD says it believes Syed is from Afghanistan. The department believes he came to the U.S. “in the last several years.” APD says its officers have contacted Syed in the past for “a few minor misdemeanor arrests” including a domestic violence incident in the past four years.
More from the Daily Beast, thanks to Lord Garth:
Ahmad Assed, president of the city’s largest mosque, told The New York Times

... which still proudly displays Walter Duranty's Pulitzer prize...

that authorities informed him the shooter is a Sunni Moslem who may have targeted the victims because he was angry over his daughter marrying a Shiite Moslem.

A gun traced back to two of the homicide scenes was found during a search of Syed’s home, authorities said.

Syed is a native of Afghanistan who has lived in New Mexico the "last several years," Hartsock said. He’s been arrested on domestic violence charges three times in recent years, but all the charges were eventually dropped.

The first of the four homicides occurred in November, authorities said, when Ahmadi was shot full of holes outside a market and cafe he operated with his brother.

A second killing came on July 26, when Aftab Hussein was shot full of holes outside of his apartment.

Days later, Afzaal was also rubbed out outside of his apartment just blocks from the University of New Mexico, where he attended graduate school. His older brother, Imtiaz, said he’d stepped outside to make a phone call before he was ambushed on Aug. 1.

The final of the four victims, Naeem Hussain, was killed on Aug. 5 just hours after he attended a funeral service for Afzaal Hussain and Aftab Hussein.

Hartsock said Albuquerque police are working "across oceans" to gather information about Syed and to coordinate the transfer of victims’ bodies.
Courtesy of Mercutio, the Daily Mail has the usual plus all the details about the miscreant’s domestic abuse. Mercutio comments:
Well, there goes the old narrative.... Muslim version of a "shotgun wedding"?
Yet Imtiaz Hussain, the brother of Afzaal Hussain, told DailyMail.com that he did not support the theory.

'My brother is a Sunni Muslim. Not a Shite Muslim,' said Imtiaz, who was a prosecutor in Pakistan before moving to Albuquerque.

'So I reject the theory that has been widely published that Muhammad Syed killed my brother and others because his daughter married a Shiite Muslim.

'My brother was a Muslim. He never carried any ID that said he was a Sunni or Shiite.'

Imtiaz Hussain also said he did not believe his brother knew Syed.

'He only went to the Islamic Center every three to four months,' he continued.

'I've never meet this person who murdered my brother nor do I think my brother knew him.

'He's 51 years old, my brother is 30 years younger, they wouldn't have a lot in common with that age gap.'

#16  And this just in.....

The son of Muhammed Syed, the man arrested in the murder of two of the four Muslim men in Albuquerque, has also been arrested. He is facing charges in connection to giving afalse address when purchasing guns last summer.

Maiwand Syed, also known as Shaheen Syed is in custody after a special agent with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives discovered he gave a false address when buying guns, that is a federal crime. According to firearms transaction records Shaheen Syed purchased two guns from Omni Arms in June of last year. On his background check and application, he listed an address across the country in Hallandale Beach, Florida.
