[ToloNews] The Taliban ...the Pashtun equivalent of men... are forcing the local people who live in areas under the group's control in Balkh province to pay them part of their income, Afghan local authorities in the northern province said on Wednesday. "The Taliban are also trying to recruit from among the local people," said the officials.
"There are only about 20 Taliban fighters inside the district building compound and the police headquarters; the rest of them have taken up positions inside the villages to collect Zakat (charity)," said Mohammad Yousuf, the acting district governor of Kaldar district.
The officials said that the number of Taliban fighters in the district numbers only about 200 fighters, but they are looking to recruit more fighters from among the people.
Earlier this month the Taliban managed to take over the center of Kaldar district. Later on the Afghan cops were deployed five kilometers away from the district to prevent a possible move by the Taliban into Hairatan border crossing, a key financial dry port in the north.
"They have imposed taxes on the shops and bazaars and on the local people--which is beyond their capacity to pay. They also harassed the people who don’t have the capacity to pay a large amount of money," said Mohammad Hashem Mansoori, a district governor for Shortepa district in Balkh province.
Business activity has also been affected following the increased violence by the Taliban, especially in those regions where there are dry ports, such as at Hairatan.
"The people have serious concerns, the business owners are very fearful because of the businesses," said Sifatullah, a resident in Hairatan.
Security authories however have assured the people that the Afghan cops are fully prepared to defend the people’s lives and property.
"The morale of our forces is very high, they are fully prepared and have the strength to defend the city. Soon we will launch our offensive operations," said Khanullah Shuja, the commander of 209 Shaheen Army Corps.
Balkh has 14 districts, nine of which are under Taliban control.

"The Zamfara State Police in collaboration with the State Ministry for Security and Home Affairs have successfully secured the unconditional release of the kidnapped victims," Zamfara State Police spokesperson Muhammad Shehu told news hounds on Tuesday.
The gangs usually demand a ransom to release the captives, but in this case, the captives were freed "without giving any financial or material gain," Shehu added.
The police spokesperson said the villagers "will be medically checked and debriefed" before returning to their families.
The gangs operate in the Rugu Forest, which spans the Zamfara, Katsuna and Kadina states in Nigeria. The region is underpoliced, and authorities have struggled to root out the criminal activity.

[Iran Press TV] Sweden on Wednesday announced it would push for tougher sentences for younger offenders in a bid to combat a rising wave of gang violence.
Many of the gangs are various flavours of Muslim colonists, some are Eastern European or other immigrants, and a very few are native Swedes looking for trouble.
The government will seek parliamentary approval to abolish the automatic reduction of sentences for defendants aged 18-20 convicted of serious crimes, such as murder, manslaughter, rape, armed robbery and gun crime, Justice Minister Morgan Johansson said.
"It's better to try to target the crimes committed by those who do these crimes in a systematic way and live a criminal lifestyle," Johansson told a presser.

Sweden has the highest number of deadly shootings per capita in Europe, according to a report published in May by the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention.

[SHAFAQ] Ottoman Turkish Cypriot authorities announced on Tuesday a partial reopening of an abandoned town for potential resettlement, drawing a strong rebuke from rival Greek Cypriots of orchestrating a land grab by stealth.Varosha, an eerie collection of derelict high-rise hotels and residences in a military zone nobody has been allowed to enter, has been deserted since a 1974 war split the island.
Ottoman Turkish Cypriot authorities opened a small area for day visits in November 2020, and said on Tuesday a part of it would be converted to civilian use with a mechanism in place for people to potentially reclaim their properties.
"A new era will begin in Maras which will benefit everyone," said Ottoman Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, who was visiting breakaway north Cyprus on Tuesday. Maras is the Ottoman Turkish name for Varosha.
Greek Cypriots fear a change to the area's status displays a clear intent of The Sick Man of Europe Turkey ...the occupiers of Greek Asia Minor... to appropriate it. Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades described the move as "illegal and unacceptable".
"I want to send the strongest message to Mr Erdogan and his local proxies that the unacceptable actions and demands of Turkey will not be accepted," Anastasiades said.
Greece's Foreign Ministry said it condemned the move "in the strongest terms", while the United Kingdom, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, said it would be discussing the issue as a matter of urgency with other council members, saying it was "deeply concerned".
"The UK calls on all parties not to take any actions which undermine the Cyprus settlement process or increase tensions on the island," a Foreign Office spokesperson said.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell also expressed concern. "(The) unilateral decision announced today by President Erdogan and (Ottoman Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin) Tatar risks raising tensions on the island & compromising return to talks on a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue," he said on Twitter.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken called the announcement "provocative" and "unacceptable." He said "the United States is working with like-minded partners to refer this concerning situation to the UN Security Council and will urge a strong response."

Tuesday marked the 47th anniversary of a Ottoman Turkish invasion mounted in 1974 after a Greek Cypriot coup engineered by the military then ruling Greece. Peace efforts have repeatedly floundered, and a new Ottoman Turkish Cypriot leadership, backed by Turkey, says a peace accord between two sovereign states is the only viable option.
Greek Cypriots, who represent Cyprus internationally and are backed by the European Union ...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing... , reject a two-state deal for the island that would accord sovereign status to the breakaway Ottoman Turkish Cypriot state that only Ankara recognises.
"A new negotiation process (to heal Cyprus' division) can only be carried out between the two states. We are right and we will defend our right to the end," Erdogan said in a speech in the divided Cypriot capital of Nicosia.
Varosha has always been regarded as a bargaining chip for Ankara in any future peace deal, and one of the areas widely expected to have been returned to Greek Cypriot administration under a settlement. The Ottoman Turkish Cypriot move renders that assumption more uncertain.

Several districts have sent the report. Four districts are yet to submit the report, he also said.
Earlier this month, Umar Gautam who had converted from Hinduism to Islam had told the ATS that he had managed to convert over a 1,000 people by luring them with money, marriage and jobs.
I converted 1,000 non-Moslems to Islam by marrying them all to Moslems, Mohammad Umar Gautam boasted before the police. Umar along with Mufti Qazi Jahangir Alam Qasm from Delhi's Jamia Nagar were arrested by the police for running an outfit involved in converting deaf and dumb students and other poor people to Islam in Uttar Pradesh with funding from the Pakistain's ISI. The arrests were made by Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terror Squad following the registration of an FIR in the case at Lucknow's ATS cop shoppe.

Investigation revealed that a particular school for hearing and speech impaired in Noida was also approached to entice them with promises of employment and money to get them converted to Islam.
When the children were approached by the police they were tight-lipped as these men had driven fear into them. The police learnt that the victims were radicalised and told that Islam is a better religion.
They were also lured with employment and money. The police say that there are more accused under the radar and are being tracked.

Nobody falls for anything, Wren. The most wretched often have to trade one sorry fate for another. A promise of communal protection, dignified life and some economic security, is enough to attract the weaker sex. And the weaker sex is weakest in countries like India.
When speaking of India you have to remember the woman has less societal protection than a goddamn cow. When a hindu hooch widow in a shanty is offered a price for her daughter and promised the girl will live a secure life in some mullah household, she takes it. The hindu family next door meanwhile looks for a 'respectable' girl, of so-and-so caste, and one who can afford dowry.
The villains [apart from the corrupt rulers] here are the temple trusts, the richest god men posturing about hinduism, and not once opening their coffers to support the poorest hindus. In contrast, the muslim ummah uses money sent liberally from Qatar, England, Germany, Sweden, everywhere for the upkeep of the poorest families.

[IsraelTimes] SIGA OT Solutions signs deal to protect water infrastructure; agreement comes as Military Intelligence chief warns Israel under regular assault
Israel’s Water Authority hired a cybersecurity company to protect its machinery following an attack on water infrastructure last year that Israel blamed on Iran, the firm said Wednesday.
The company, SIGA OT Solutions, said it signed an agreement with the authority to "to counter cyberthreats to the machinery and equipment that comprise the critical infrastructure," as well as defend them against ransomware attacks.
Last April, six Water Authority facilities were targeted in the cyberattack in which hackers attempted to increase the amount of chlorine in the water supply to dangerously high levels. The attacks were countered before any damage could be caused. However, denial ain't just a river in Egypt... the incident raised major concerns about the ability of the Water Authority to protect itself from future cyberattacks.
Before receiving the contract, SIGA tested out its cyber defense system SigaGuard at a number of water installations. According to the firm, the product tracks the underlying electrical signals in the water systems to "detect initial evolvements of anomalies in the process behavior and gains direct visibility into the operational technologies process."
"Water utilities are at the forefront of global cyberattacks. But utilities have minimal tolerance for a downtime in service, and no utility would agree to a hacker deciding whether its infrastructure will operate or not," Amir Samoiloff, co-founder and CEO of SIGA, said in a statement.
On Tuesday, the outgoing head of Military Intelligence said Israel is facing constant cyberthreats and will respond to attacks as it does to any other type of aggression.

The Mediterranean country is battling what the World Bank has described as one of the planet's worst financial crises since the 1850s, which has left more than half the population living below the poverty line.
The Lebanese pound has lost more than 90 percent of its value to the dollar on the black market since 2019, and Lebanese with deeply devalued salaries in the local currency have seen their purchasing power plummet.
According to the latest prices in July, "a family's budget just for food is around five times the minimum wage," the Crisis Observatory at the American University of Beirut said.
Without taking into account the additional cost of water, electricity or cooking gas, a family of five was spending more than 3.5 million Lebanese pounds a month on food alone, it estimated.
Most people are paid in the local currency in Lebanon, where the national minimum wage stands at 675,000 Lebanese pounds.
That was once worth almost 450 dollars at the official exchange rate, but today barely fetches 30 dollars on the black market.
The Observatory said the cost of food has soared by 700 percent over the past two years, and this increase had picked up pace in recent weeks.
"The price of a basic food basket increased by more than 50 percent in less than a month," it said.
Nasser Yassin, the head of the Observatory and a professor at AUB, told AFP the latest jump in prices was "very, very alarming".
"We're now witnessing an exponential increase in a short period of time," he said.
Food price increases have mostly mirrored the pound's nosedive, though some traders likely marked up some products in a bid to salvage some of their capital, he explained.
Lebanon has been slowly lifting subsidies on key goods in recent weeks, sending the price of fuel and medicines soaring.
The cash-strapped country is struggling to import enough fuel to keep its power plants online, sparking electricity cuts for up to 23 hours a day in most areas.
The cost of hooking up to a back-up neighborhood generator to keep the lights and fridge on has also increased.

Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers, a practice dating back to the heady human sacrifice days of Baal Moloch. In 2020 Hezbollahblew up a considerable portion of Beirut and many of its inhabitants when its ammonium nitrate faci8lity exploded. They blamed it on... somebody else. It wasn't them though.
