2020 Saw the Europe Migrant Crisis Land on British Shores

[Breitbart] The year in which the United Kingdom finally left the European Union was marred by record waves of illegal immigration across the English Channel, as an estimated 9,000 boat migrants landed on British shores.
A key pillar of the pro-sovereignty Brexit movement was for the British people to ‘take back control’ of their ability to determine their own laws, but perhaps just as crucially, to regain control of the country’s borders.
In 2019, Home Secretary Priti Patel pledged to make migrant crossings an “infrequent phenomenon” and Prime Minister Boris Johnson made a promise that the government would send boat migrants back.
Neither promise would be fulfilled in 2020, with over four times as many migrants landing this year than in 2019.
A TRICKLE TURNS INTO A WAVE
The first few months of the year saw a trickle of migrant boats making the perilous journey from France. However, as lockdown measures were introduced on both sides of the Channel, the trickle turned into larger waves, with nearly 500 migrants landing during the first month of lockdown. Less than a month later, over 1,000 would have been recorded landing.
Amidst the panic surrounding the Chinese coronavirus, there was little appetite amongst the mainstream media to cover the growing migrant crisis, despite warnings that outbreaks of the virus had been found in the makeshift migrant camps in Calais.
Following Great Britain’s official departure from the European Union, veteran Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage took up the slack from the mainstream media and began reporting on the deluge of migrant crossings. In a stunning development, the arch-Brexiteer turned investigative journalist filmed what purported to show the French Navy escorting boat migrants into British territorial waters, where they “handed over” the migrants to the UK Border Force, who in turn brought the migrants ashore at the Port of Dover.
Mr Farage’s findings were confirmed by Breitbart London’s Oliver JJ Lane, who tracked transponder data from ships in the English Channel to confirm the meeting of the two ships. Further data uncovered by Breitbart London showed that a similar meeting of the French Navy and British Border Force took place just days before off the coast of Pett Level, another migrant landing hotspot identified by Mr Farage.
THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA’S HEAD IN THE SAND
Rather than highlighting the growing migrant crisis, many in the mainstream media and British establishment derided the Brexit leader for focussing on the issue.
Others attempted to use the coronavirus lockdown restrictions to shut down the efforts to uncover the growing migrant scandal, with at least one member of the public reporting Mr Farage to the police in Dover for supposedly breaching the restrictions.
This prompted the police to visit his hotel to warn him to obey “essential travel” rules, which he was, in fact, exempt from as a journalist — hosting an LBC radio show at the time and serving as a columnist for The Telegraph.
Undeterred, Farage pronounced that the police pressure would not stop him from covering the issue.
“One of the points of Brexit was we were going to become an independent, self-governing nation that controlled its borders and its own destiny. To see our immigration rules, to see the rule of law, to see ourselves being made a mockery of, is something I want to fight,” he added.
FOUR STAR ACCOMMODATION FOR MIGRANTS
There are an estimated 56,000 supposed asylum seekers in the United Kingdom, the vast number of whom are deemed ineligible for asylum by the government.
Once on British soil, migrants are afforded free accommodation, a weekly stipend of at least £35.39, access to National Health Service (NHS) healthcare, free dental care, and education for children between the ages of five and 17 — all of which is paid for by the British taxpayer.
Rather than fulfilling the prime minister’s pledge to send illegal boat migrants back, the Home Office has instead been storing migrants in hotels across the country. Some migrants have even received VIP treatment, with their immigration handlers escorting them on private tours of Anfield Stadium after Liverpool’s Premier League win.
The scandal was once again brought to light by the Brexit leader, who uncovered a hotel in the West Midlands housing 147 migrants while refusing to take bookings from native Britons.
In an even more embarrassing development for the government, the Home Office was also revealed by Mr Farage to be housing illegal migrants in a hotel in the constituency of Home Secretary Priti Patel, who has frequently called for a crackdown on illegal immigration.
Matthew John Okorie, 25 and Sunday Sylvester, 22 were charged with endangering a ship under the UK’s Merchant Shipping Act 1995 and will appear in court again in January for trial. They are two of seven men who were arrested onboard the Nave Andromeda oil tanker in October after the crew reported the presence of stowaways on the ship.
All of those arrested are reported to be of Nigerian origin, and the operators of the Greek ’owned’, Liberian-flagged ship said they believed the men boarded the ship while it was moored off Lagos.
There was a ten-hour standoff in the Channel as the crew of the ship retreated to a safe position, still in control of the ship but apparently unable to bring it alongside. The situation was brought to an end after members of Britannia’s Special Boat Service — the UK equivalent of U.S. Navy SEALs — boarded the tanker from the air.
Britannia’s BBC reports the remaining men of the stowaway group who have not yet been charged are being detained under powers exercised by the UK Border Force.

[AlMasdar] The head of the Russian Armed Forces, Alexander Leonov, spoke on Sunday about the lessons learned from the war in Karabakh for the Russian army.
Leonov said in an interview with Krasnaya Zvezda that "during the battles in Karabakh, this offensive weapon remained unnoticed, and a blow from the sky suddenly followed. The fighters at the site did not see any threat, because the relatively small device was hanging at high altitude and was invisible."
"The old Soviet anti-aircraft air defense systems, for example, Shilka or Wasp, which are in service with the Armenian forces, were unable to detect a small-sized target," he said.
According to him, the war has shown an increasing role in the battles of drones and suicide drones, which inflicted the most damage to the enemy, while Russia does not possess such means in large quantities, but it has already developed new tactics to confront it.
He added that the coordinated use of all the forces and the heterogeneous means available for the Joint Weapons Brigade, with the aim of combating UAVs, showed the greatest efficiency. To combat UAVs, it was decided to establish mixed tactical groups with the participation of joint weapons units, as well as military air defense and electronic warfare units.
It is planned to use, in particular, the promising anti-aircraft artillery complex derivation-air defense as an effective countermeasure. A team of Moroccan diplomats arrived in Israel Sunday night to begin laying the groundwork for the reopening of a liaison office in Tel Aviv next month.
Last week, Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita announced that the country planned to reopen its diplomatic office in Israel within two to three weeks, after closing it some 20 years ago in a sign of solidarity with the Paleostinians upon the outbreak of the Second Intifada.
Though the liaison office — a step down from a full embassy — was shuttered in 2000, the Moroccan government maintained ownership of the property, allowing for its rapid reopening following the announcement on December 10 that the two countries were renewing ties.
Israel’s liaison office in Rabat was similarly closed in 2000 in response to Morocco’s decision but was also never sold. Though Israel plans to quickly reopen its office as well, no official date has been given.
The Moroccan team that arrived Sunday night was due to hold a number of meetings with the Foreign Ministry in the coming days to prepare for the arrival of an official high-level delegation next month and the reopening of the liaison office, an Israeli official told The Times of Israel, speaking on condition of anonymity ... for fear of being murdered... With its announcement of normalization earlier this month, Morocco became the third Arab state this year to normalize ties with Israel under US-brokered deals, joining the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. Sudan has also announced plans to normalize ties with Israel, though no official agreements have been signed.
Last week, a joint Israeli-American delegation led by National Security Adviser Meir Ben-Shabbat and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner visited Rabat to sign a trilateral declaration that cemented the plans to renew ties between Israel and Morocco and to affirm that the United States would recognize Moroccan illusory sovereignty over the disputed Western Sahara region.
A small number of bilateral agreements between Jerusalem and Rabat were signed during that trip, with plans to further expand ties between the two countries, including through direct flights beginning early next year.
Though initially Morocco and Israel will maintain liaison offices in one another’s countries, they plan to establish full embassies in the future.
In the trilateral declaration signed in Rabat last week, the two announced their intention to "immediately resume full official contacts between Israeli and Moroccan counterparts and establish full diplomatic, peaceful and friendly relations."
On Friday, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a phone call with Morocco’s King Mohammed VI, the first time they had spoken since the normalization deal was announced earlier this month.

Twelve gangs will participate in the joint drill, which "comes in the context of enhancing cooperation and joint action between the resistance groups to raise their combat readiness permanently and continuously," according to a statement by the Gaza-based Joint Operations Room, a group consisting of various terrorist factions.
The Hamas-controlled Ministry of Interior on Monday said the drill would begin at 10 a.m. and that the sea would be closed to all residents of the Gaza Strip, including fishermen, for its duration. In addition, several security and police headquarters will be evacuated for 24 hours.
The main groups expected to participate in the drill belong to Hamas, Paleostinian Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Paleostine and Fatah.
According to the groups, the drill aims to send a "message of deterrence" to Israel. "The main message is that the Paleostinian resistance groups are ready to respond to any Israeli aggression," a Hamas official in the Gaza Strip told news hounds.
Abu Mujahed, a front man for the Popular Resistance® Committees, one of the groups scheduled to participate in the drill, said it would "carry new surprises and messages to the Zionist enemy."
The Paleostinians will see how the performance of the "resistance groups has developed their capabilities," he said.
The drill "confirms that the resistance has an army that believes in unity in confronting the Zionist enemy and carries a message to the enemy that any aggression against our people will be met with a unified response," Abu Mujahed said.

The Kornet is an anti-tank guided missile designed for use against battle tanks; it was first introduced for service with the Russian Army in 1998.
Soleimani was assassinated by the United States in the vicinity of the Baghdad International Airport on January 3rd, 2020.

Iran's state gas company said on Monday it had slashed supplies to neighbouring Iraq over arrears of more than $6 billion, after the Iraqi electricity ministry said the cuts placed Baghdad and other cities at risk of serious power shortages.
"The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity owes more than $5 billion in gas bills to the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), of which $3 billion remains blocked and inaccessible in ...TBI (Trade Bank of Iraq), and more than $2 billion is overdue debt," NIGC said in a statement.
Iran has been unable to access billions of dollars in assets in several countries due to U.S. sanctions.
"In addition, the Iraqi side owes more than $1 billion to the National Iranian Gas Company for contractual offenses under the agreement," said the NIGC statement, published by the Iranian oil ministry's news agency SHANA.
The feared electricity shortages could place further pressure on the government of Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.
Iran’s Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian is scheduled to visit Baghdad on Tuesday to discuss the unpaid bills with his Iraqi counterpart, an Iraqi official said on Sunday.
Washington has repeatedly extended by 90 or 120 days a sanctions exemption to allow Baghdad to import Iranian energy, but in November it granted only a 45-day extension.
