Army paratrooper Robert Nicoson acquitted after Syria gunfight allegations
[FoxNews] Nicoson, a member of the 82nd Airborne Division, faced seven charges, including failure to obey an order and reckless endangerment.

An 82nd Airborne Division soldier was totally acquitted Friday evening during a court-martial after facing a series of charges stemming from a deadly gunfight in Syria in 2020.

"He was fully acquitted of all the allegations," said Phillip Stackhouse, the civilian defense attorney representing Sgt. 1st Class Robert Nicoson, in a statement to the Army Times.

"Sergeant First Class Nicoson, and his family, continue to be humbled and thankful to those that have supported him and stood by his side," he continued, after the military hearing at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

Nicoson was initially charged with two counts of failure to obey an order, two counts of reckless endangerment, one count of communicating threats, and three counts of obstructing justice for his role in a deadly firefight that took place Aug. 17, 2020, near the northeastern Syrian town of Qamishli.

The firefight started when Nicoson’s patrol sought passage through a pro-regime checkpoint and was initially blocked from doing so. After a discussion through translators, the U.S. forces were allowed passage before they were met with small arms fire, according to a report by Task & Purpose.

Nicoson’s unit, the 82nd Airborne Division’s Blackhorse Troop, 1st Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, returned fire, killing one Syrian soldier. No U.S. soldiers were injured or killed in the 10-minute incident.

Onlookers captured the firefight on video, but its start was not recorded.

In the months following the firefight, an Army Criminal Investigation Division inquiry determined Nicoson was at fault.

On Friday, the jury — composed of two lieutenant colonels and six command sergeants major — cleared Nicoson of any wrongdoing and a motion to clear him of an eighth charge was granted during the evidence phase, according to the report.

"The trial lasted for a week and over 20 witnesses were called to the stand to provide testimony to a combat experienced panel," Stackhouse added in an email to Army Times. "After just over 2-hours of deliberations, the panel president delivered the verdict in open court."

Lt. Col. Brett Lea, a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division, confirmed the acquittal to the Army Times, but did not otherwise comment on its outcome.

Al-Shabaab militants target US-trained Danab forces in Somalia

faceless myrmidons on Friday targeted members of the Somali National Army [SNA] in central Somalia, in an attack that comes amid ongoing political instability in the Horn of Africa nation.

Officials said at least two members of SNA's Danab brigade were killed and nine others maimed after a kaboom targeted a military convoy in Dhusumareb, the regional administrative capital of Galmadug state.

A top military general told news hounds that the military convoy was hit by a landmine while traveling between the town of Guriel and Dhusamareb. The two towns have been a center of focus for al-Shabaab on the last several occasions.

"The military convoy belonged to Danab commandos, and we understand the attack was an improvised bomb [IED] planted near the road, killing soldiers," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

Mohammed Deeq Abdi, a local journalist, told Anadolu Agency that nine maimed soldiers were admitted to a hospital in Dhusamareb. Of the maimed soldiers, reports indicate, four sustained serious injuries.

In their proxy media outlets, the al-Qaeda linked group, al-Shabaab, claimed the attack leftover 15 soldiers dead. However,

the reports could not be independently verified by Garowe Online.

Elsewhere, on Friday, Galmudug

regional soldiers repulsed an al-Shabaab attack on the town of Bahdo in the same region. Somali national TV reported that 17 bad boyz were potted in the retaliatory attack, citing military commanders as saying.

Further, the Somali National Army on Friday also announced killing at least five al-Shabaab faceless myrmidons in the Middle Shabelle region. The operation was executed by the Special Forces from Danab unit, who are trained by the US Africa Command.

"Gambole is one of al-Shabaab's strongholds in the Middle Shabelle region. A heavy shootout erupted during the operation, but our commandos killed many al-Shabaab terrorists, including five senior commanders," a military official said.

Col. Ahmed Abdullahi Nur, commander of the 16th Danab Commandos, also confirmed the operation and the killing of al-Shabaab operatives.

Nur said operations against the terrorist group, which has been fighting against the Somali government and African Union

Gunmen kill 140 people in Nigeria: residents
[AlAhram] Gunmen known in northwest Nigeria as "bandidos" killed at least 140 people in multiple raids this week, four residents told AFP Saturday, but there was no official confirmation.

Clashes between herders and farmers over access to land has plagued northwest and central Nigeria for years, with some groups evolving into criminal gangs who now terrorise local communities.

"We buried a total of 143 people killed by the bandidos in the attacks," said Balarabe Alhaji, a community leader in one of the affected villages in Zamfara state.

Hundreds of cycle of violence-riding button men rampaged through ten villages in Anka and Bukkuyum districts on Wednesday through Thursday, shooting residents and looting and burning homes, locals said.

Officials and security agencies have not yet commented on the attacks.

Babandi Hamidu, a resident of Kurfa Danya village said the murderous Moslems were shooting "anyone on sight".

"More than 140 people were buried across the ten villages and the search for more bodies is ongoing because many people are unaccounted for," Hamidu said.

Idi Musa, a resident of another village, Kurfa Danya, said "the corpse count is huge. We are talking of around 150 people killed by the bandidos."

The bandidos also stole "around 2,000 cattle," Musa added.

Another resident who only gave his first name Babangida gave a similar account.

All four sources said they were present at burials in their respective villages.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian government officially labelled bandidos as terrorists, to bring tougher sanctions against convicted button men, their informants and supporters.

In the official gazette, the government said activities of Yan Bindiga and Yan Ta'adda -- meaning bandidos in the local Hausa language -- were "acts of terrorism".

"We labelled them terrorists... we are going to deal with them as such," President Muhammadu Buhari told Nigerian TV this week.

The 79-year-old former army general is also battling a more than decade long jihadist insurgency in the northeast.

About 200 bodies have been recovered and buried after gunmen suspected to be bandits invaded different communities in Anka and Bukkuyum local government areas of Zamfara State.

Some of the communities are Barayar Zaki, Wanu, Rafin Gero, Laho, Lallaho, Kurfar Danya, Dutsin Dan Ajiya, Tungar Geza, Kewaye and Tungar Na More.

SaharaReporters gathered that over 200 corpses have been recovered from bushes as some of the people were caught unawares on their farmlands.

In Kurfad Danye alone, sources said about 140 bodies of vigilante members were buried on Friday.

The bandits, who were about 300 and armed with sophisticated weapons, had on Wednesday stormed the communities on motorcycles and started firing sporadic gunshot.

The terrorists also destroyed valuables, abducted and displaced several persons, including women and children in the affected communities.

Deadly attacks have raged across Zamfara State where banditry had thrived.

Farming and herding communities in the state have long been terrorised by gangs, who raid villages, steal cattle and kidnap residents for ransom.

Eleven Colombian police wounded in explosives attack on truck
[AlAhram] At least 11 Colombian coppers were maimed in an attack against their truck using explosives in the southwestern city of Cali, President Ivan Duque said Saturday.

At least 11 Colombian coppers were maimed in an attack against their truck using explosives in the southwestern city of Cali, President Ivan Duque said Saturday.

The truck was badly damaged in the blast. No civilians were reported injured.

"We condemn the cowardly terrorist attack against members of the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad," in the city's Puerto Rellena area, Duque said on Twitter.

"We sympathize with the 11 uniformed officers maimed in the attack, 3 of them seriously," added the conservative president, who did not give details about the alleged perpetrator.

Cali's security undersecretary Jimmy Dranguet told AFP it was an attack "with explosives."

With 2.2 million inhabitants, Cali is the third-largest city in Colombia and one of the most violent mostly peaceful in Latin America.

It is in one of the biggest coca cultivation areas in Colombia, the world's largest cocaine producer.

Colombia is officially at peace after signing a pact with the FARC guerrilla group in 2016 to end more than a half-century of armed conflict.

But it has seen a flare-up of violence in recent months due to fighting over territory and resources by dissident guerrillas, the ELN rebel group, paramilitary forces and narco mobs.

Armenian forces fire on Azerbaijani positions near border
[NATION.PK] Armenian forces fired on Azerbaijani army positions across the border on Saturday, Baku announced.

The Armenian troops stationed in the Yukhari Shorja area fired automatic grenade launchers and large-caliber weapons at about 1.50 p.m. local time (0950GMT) in the direction of the Kalbajar region on the Azerbaijani side, said a statement by Azerbaijan's Defense Ministry.

"As a result of the retaliatory actions undertaken by the Azerbaijan Army Units, the opposing side was suppressed," the ministry said, reporting no losses of personnel or military equipment.

"Currently, the situation in this direction is stable, the Azerbaijan Army Units control the operational situation," it added.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

Clashes erupted in September 2020, and during the six-week war, Azerbaijan liberated several cities and nearly 300 settlements and villages.

The 44-day conflict ended in November 2020 in a Russia-brokered deal that saw Armenia cede swathes of territory it had occupied for nearly three decades.

"He was running fast, he was running away from something," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri said at a presser on Friday.

Smith was purportedly targeting dozens of the attendees of a rally protesting the treatment of Jan. 6 suspects on the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Capitol riot.

A search of Smith's home he shares with his parents in Oldsmar, Fla. revealed more explosives, tape and nails for use in grenades. Smith’s "direct action" checklist included a drawing of an umbrella, a symbol adopted by Antifa forces of Evil for their frequent use of black umbrellas to shield one another from cameras while they commit acts of violence or vandalism. The helmet found in his backpack during his arrest had the Antifa "iron front" symbol painted on it.

The Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office displayed evidence obtained from Antifa bombing suspect Garrett Smith

Sheriff Gualtieri said that Smith is refusing to cooperate in the investigation.

Smith has been charged with three counts of making, possessing or discharging a destructive device, in addition to a charge of loitering and prowling. He does not have a prior criminal history. His bail is set at over $300,000.

Armed group uses live bullets against demonstrators who prevented holding a Soleimani's memorial in Wasit
[SHAFAQ] A force affiliated with the Asa'ib Ahl al-Haq movement stormed a square downtown the city of al-Kout in Wasit after a group of demonstrators attempted to prevent the movement proponents of organizing a commemoration of Qassem Soleimani
, the commander of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Quds force, and the deputy commander of al-Hashd al-Shaabi (Popular Mobilization Forces-PMF), Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis.

The commemoration ceremonials were scheduled to take place in the same square the demonstrators gathered in.

Eyewitnesses told Shafaq News Agency that the armed force deployed live bullets to disperse the demonstrators who torched tires on the roads and inside the square.
Rudaw adds:
According to the security source, speaking on condition of anonymity
... for fear of being murdered...
, some "150 to 200 demonstrators" stormed the ceremony in the Iraqi city of Kut, some 160 kilometres (100 miles) southeast of Baghdad.

The protesters tried to "prevent" the commemoration, moving in just before it was due to begin and tearing down portraits of Soleimani and Muhandis, he said.

"Members of an armed faction opened fire and maimed two demonstrators," the source said, without giving further details.

Sajjad Salem, an independent member of parliament linked to an anti-government protest movement that began in October 2019, posted a video on Facebook showing gunnies in a square, with gunshots ringing out.

Salem said the video showed shots being fired by members of the Asaib Ahl al-Haq force, a key component of the Hashed.

The commemoration was suspended and security forces have deployed heavily though Kut, an AFP news hound said.

Detractors of the Hashed accuse it of acting on behalf of Iran, which wields considerable cross-border influence in Iraq, and accuse it of crushing the protests that began in 2019.

a security source told our Agency that the attack maimed two Iraqi soldiers.

Al-Azim district is exposed to frequent attacks on the borders of Saladin due to security gaps and the lack of military reinforcements.

Thousands of families were displaced from al-Azim, al-Saadiya, Jalawla, North Miqdadiyah, and East Mansuriya in 2014 during the ISIS invasion.

In 2017, Iraq declared final victory over ISIS after Iraqi forces drove its last remnants from the country, three years after the Death Eater group captured about a third of Iraq's territory.

Yet, ISIS still has sleeper cells in several Iraqi Governorates.

Iran sanctions U.S. officials over Soleimani murder
[SHAFAQ] Iran
...They hate Jews Zionists Jews. Their economy is based on the production of oil and vitriol...
imposed sanctions on United States individuals for their involvement in the liquidation of the Commander of the Quds Forces, Qasem Soleimani.

On Saturday, Iran's Foreign Ministry stated that the sanctioned individuals include Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley, US Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Kenneth F. McKenzie Jr., and former National Security Adviser Robert C. O'Brien.

"The individuals on the list of sanctions participated in the decision-making, planning, organization, financing, support, as well as in the leadership or implementation of the terrorist act," the ministry explained.

Soleimani, head of an elite overseas unit of Iran's Revolutionary Guards, was killed along with Iraqi leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis on January 3, 2020, in a U.S. dronezap on his convoy at Baghdad airport.

Washington had accused Soleimani of criminal masterminding attacks by Iranian-aligned "militias" on U.S. forces in the region. His killing took U.S.-Iranian hostilities into uncharted waters and stoked concern about a major conflagration.
