8 die in market bombing attack in Mogadishu
Nothing says devotion to Allan like murdering people shopping for the week
[AlManar] A car bomb exploded near a busy market in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Saturday killing at least eight people, police said, as medical sources warned the toll could be far higher.

“We have counted about eight civilians so far who were killed in the blast and more than 10 others wounded but the death toll could be higher because the area is a market and it was so densely populated when the blast occurred, most people who were wounded have serious injuries,” said police official Ibrahim Mohamed.

Medical sources suggested nearly 30 people had been killed, but this was not confirmed by authorities.

“Our ambulances have collected 13 wounded civilians and 28 dead bodies, the toll could be higher because of the density of the location where the blast occurred,” Dr Abdukadir Abdirahman Adem, director of the AMIN ambulance service told AFP.

The blast took place in the densely populated Afisiyone area in southern Mogadishu.

Misrata-led forces advance into Jiza, ISIS deploy suicide bombers
[Libya Observer] Five Misrata-led fighters were killed and more than 30 others injured on Saturday in three separate ISIS attacks in Jiza apartment blocks in Sirte, the last ISIS-held area in the city.

Following two days of intense Arclight airstrikes and artillery shelling, Misrata-led forces launched a fresh attack on ISIS remnants in Jiza who are trapped inside 54 houses, according to military sources.

As the infantry move between the houses, a trapped ISIS bomber went kaboom! his boom belt while other ISIS diehards launched suicide grenade attacks.

"Misrata-led forces have taken control of 30 houses today," the military sources said.

While combing the liberated houses, an ISIS woman asked for a safe corridor, but as she was leaving, she tricked the fighters and opened fire on them before being killed.

Last week, Misrata-led forces recovered 30 ISIS bodies from the festivities zone in Jiza.

Libya: Air strike on Tebu Tibesti mountain control point
Tripoli, 26 November 2016:

The Tebu-held Kilinja gate astride the main road into Kufra has been bombed for the second time in a month.

Like its predecessor, this morning’s attack on the position 350 kilometres south-west of Rebyana caused no casualties. However it has highlighted concerns that the Marj-based army is moving more firmly against the Tebu who were once seen as its allies.

Tebu sources say they have obtained a leaked document from Marj which sets out the new policy. Dated 22 September this year, it apparently gives full authority to the army’s Kufra Operations Room to cleanse both Rebyana and Um Aranib in the south-west from what it had described as “criminals” and “rogues”.

Today’s attack was said to have been carried out by an AT-802 – also known as an Air Tractor because it is based on a US crop-spraying aircraft. It is not known that the Libyan airforce operate this aircraft type. However the UAE does and is supposed to be flying six of them from Al-Khadim air base to the south-east of Marj and Jardas Al-Abid.

The AT-802 has a range of some 1200 km which would mean that if it was an aircraft from Al-Khadim it would need to have been operating from a forward airfield, probably Kufra.

The Kilinja gate has been under Tebu control since 2011. It is regarded as a major transit point for human traffickers and drugs smugglers, including migrants and contraband coming from the Siwa and Farafra oases in Egypt. The gate controls the main pass into the Tibesti mountains and Chad. The area remains heavily mined from Qaddafi’s conflict with Chad between 1978 and 1989.

#1  I can find no "Kalinja gate" in the numerous maps I have of Libya. That a site somewhere south of Rabiana would be a transit point for arms from Siwa or Farafra oases in Egypt doesn't compute. Rebiana itself is a few kilometers due west of Kufra, and Um Aranib is located just east of Sebha. Thus, a check of the map indicates that someone has decided to eliminate once and for all the always unreliable ethnic Tubu from Saharan Libya.

#3  A quick background on the Toubou tribe.

And - why they are "unreliable":

Under Qaddafi, Arab tribes such as the Zawiyah were favored and used to control the minority groups in the South – an action that likely fostered Toubou resentment toward the Southern Arab tribes.

[T]he Tuareg and Toubou broke their long-lasting Midi Midi truce and have clashed in Ubari for strategic control of smuggling routes and the nearby El-Sharara oilfield. However, the Toubou are not exclusively at odds with the Tuareg. Economic control over vital trade routes, often doubling as smuggling routes, has caused clashes between the Toubou tribes and the Zawiyah tribe (Arab) in Kufra, as well as between the Toubou and the Awlad Sulayman tribe (Arab) in Sabha.

The awarding of Southern border control to the Toubou after the revolution likely escalated the clashes between Toubou and Arab tribes, as the revolution removed some advantages and existing power arrangements previously awarded to Arab tribes – creating a change in the Southern power dynamics. This also explains the wider range of Toubou-Arab animosities compared to Tuareg-Arab animosities.

#4  Thank you Pappy. I would only add that the Toubou (Tubu, Tebu, etc.,) served as bodyguards for King Idris at the time he was overthrown by Qaddafi in 1969. Some then served for a time as guards for Qadaffi. However, most of the Toubou -- heterodox Sufi who had been allied to Idris and the Sanoussi Brotherhood, returned to the isolated Borkou-Ennedi-Tibesti of Chad. There, they were the often questionable allies of Chad's dictator Hissene Habre. In general, given their usual treachery the tough Toubou were detested by the equally tough Zaghawa of Chad and Darfur, and by the tribes of southern Libya and northern Niger.

ISIS claims deadly attack on Egyptian soldiers in Sinai
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] ISIS grabbed credit on Friday for an attack on an Egyptian military checkpoint in northern Sinai Peninsula that killed at least 12 soldiers.

An Islamist insurgency in the rugged, thinly populated Sinai has gained pace since the military toppled President Mohammed Mursi of the Moslem Brüderbund, Egypt’s oldest Islamist movement, in mid-2013 following mass protests against his rule.

The Lion of Islam group staging the insurgency pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014 and adopted the name Sinai Province. It is blamed for killing hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police since then.

"An gang of terrorist elements attacked a checkpoint in North Sinai on Thursday night using four-wheel-drives rigged with explosives," the military said in a statement that put the corpse count at eight soldiers and three attackers.

Medical sources said four more bodies were found on Friday, bringing the toll to 12 out of the checkpoint’s 31 soldiers. Twelve soldiers were maimed and one was missing.

ISIS said it had killed 15 soldiers, destroyed two armored vehicles and taken weapons from the checkpoint before blowing it up.

Witnesses said security forces set up extra mobile and static checkpoints in and around Arish city, the capital of North Sinai province, and were searching for the attackers.

Later on Friday, a front man for the US State Department condemned the attack, offering condolences to the families of the victims and sympathy for the injured.

"We express our solidarity with the people of Egypt as they confront violent extremism. The United States strongly supports Egypt’s security, and together we will continue to work together to defeat this threat," front man John Kirby said in a statement.

Europe
'SEND THEM BACK' Bulgarian PM orders mass deportations after rioting migrants trash camp
[EXPRESS.CO.UK] Fuming Boiko Borisov vowed all migrants colonists involved in the violent disturbance will be "brought to justice" with many being deported back to their home countries.

Riot police had to storm the camp yesterday using water cannon and rubber bullets to restore order at the camp on the border with The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire....
, with 24 officers being injured in the operation.

Shocking photographs of the burning rubble of the camp showed gangs of young men milling around in hoodies. Most are from Afghanistan, according to officials.

Witnesses said the scene "looked like a war zone" after rampaging refugees smashed windows, overturned trash containers and set fires.

Those who are not sent back to the Middle East will be dispersed to migrant camps across the country in a bid to prevent them from organising another violent uprising.

Mr Borisov raged: "I am very worried. You see there is no window left unbroken. The people who committed these acts of vandalism will be brought to justice.

"Based on an agreement between the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and Afghanistan we have asked for a plane to start extraditing people there in early December. As for the rest, all who have acted brutally and violated public order will be moved to closed camps."

More than 400 asylum seekers had been confined in a part of the camp after rumours rippled through a nearby town that many of them had a serious and highly contagious skin condition. It is home to around 3,000 migrants colonists overall, making it the largest in Bulgaria.

Officials put the site on lockdown whilst detailed medical examinations were carried out, although doctors later said the level of sickness in the camp had been exaggerated.

Howerver, residents in nearby Harmanli have upped their calls for the camp to be permanently closed, claiming that migrants colonists regularly venture into the town and steal from them.

Local Rusi Stoev said: "This camp should be closed. You should see what it's like here at weekends. They go around in big groups and take fruit and vegetables at the market without paying."

Almost all of the migrants colonists in the camp want to travel onwards to rich western European countries like Germany and Scandinavia, where they hope to start new lives.

Representatives for the asylum seekers have been demanding that they be allowed free passage into neighbouring Serbia, which is the next step on the Balkans route to the promised lands. However,
those who apply themselves too closely to little things often become incapable of great things...
the country's interior ministry has refused that request and has instead beefed up security by deploying more border guards.

Bulgaria has been one of the main transit points for the more than a million migrants colonists who have entered Europe from the Middle East and North Africa in the last year.

The country has built a fence along its land border with Turkey and has beefed up border controls to deter asylum seekers from attempting the crossing.

Officials say some 17,000 people were detained in the first 10 months of the year, down by more than a third from the same period in 2015.

Despite the decreasing numbers, Bulgarian nationalists have staged protests in recent months calling for the immediate closure of all refugee centres and for migrants colonists to be returned to Turkey or to their country of origin

Germany detains Syrian refugee with bomb-making materials
[DeutscheWelle] The 20-year-old man was arrested in the southern German city of Ulm after trying to enter Denmark with bomb-making materials. Investigators believe he sympathized with the 'Islamic State' (IS) Lion of Islam group.

Stuttgart confirmed on Thursday that the Syrian refugee was enjugged
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on Sunday.

The 20-year-old man had failed to cross into Denmark a day earlier, they said.

Investigators believe he was planning to carry out an attack after discovering that he had obtained material which could be used to build weapons or bombs.

Spokesman Jan Holzner told the Rooters news agency that the suspect had been in Germany for some time but it was not clear when he entered the country. Holzner did not identify the man and did not know whether the man had been granted asylum. He had been living in a refugee shelter in southwest Germany.
And, like a thoughtful guest, he was careful not to blow up his hosts, but only his hosts' neighbours.
"We have evidence that he sympathized with "Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. "," Holzner said.

It was not clear if the man had been in contact with IS members outside of Germany, he added.

A statement later on Thursday by prosecutors gave additional details, saying there were no indications of a concrete threat.

2 die in small arms attack in Gwadar
Militants attacked a vehicle of an oil exploration company and killed two of its security guards in Balochistan's Gwadar district on Saturday.

Mansoor Gichki, a senior administration officer, told DawnNews that armed militants opened fire at the vehicle of a private oil exploration company in Pasni tehsil of Gwadar.

He said two private security men guarding the officials of the company were killed on the spot. The assailants escaped unhurt from the spot

"The private oil exploration company was engaged in conducting survey of the area when the vehicle of the company was attacked by miscreants," he added.

Levies and police personnel reached the incident site as an investigation into the incident went underway.

"The incident seems to be an act of targeted killing," Gichki said.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Militants in the area have been attacking security forces and pro-government politicians for more than a decade.

The army launched operation Zarb-i-Azb in June 2014 in a bid to wipe out militant bases in the northwestern tribal areas. Security has since improved though scattered attacks still take place.

In September this year, a suicide bomber targeted a mosque in Mohmand Agency's Anbar tehsil during Friday prayers, leaving at least 24 people dead.

Iraq's parliament passes law legalising Shia militias
[Aljazeera] The Iraqi parliament has passed a bill recognising the Shia militia fighters, the Popular Mobilisation Forces, as a government entity operating alongside the military.

The bill passed on Saturday will see the establishment of the Popular Mobilisation Forces Commission, which critics said could only widen sectarian divisions in the war-torn country.

ISIS executes 15 in Mosul

Nineveh – (IraqiNews.com) Islamic State militants executed 15 people, mostly youths, in Mosul late Friday over accusations of collusion with security forces and mutiny against the extremist group, a military officer has said.

The group took 15 people, mostly youths in their twenties, out from their residences late Friday before executing them by a fire squad inside a public park in Mohandessin district, Captain Hamad al-Ebeidi told National Iraqi News Agency (NINA).

He said that the militants also blew up five homes previously used as detention facilities, as well as four booby-trapped vehicles in northern and eastern Mosul.

Iraqi government and popular forces have ran into several mass graves since operations launched in October to retake Mosul from ISIS. The group had been notorious for carrying out heinous executions of opponents and noncomplying individuals in Iraq and Syria, posting videos of the killings throughout its media platforms.

ISIS leader makes off with ISIS cash
Oh, I've so always wanted to live in Rio!
Nineveh – (IraqiNews.com) ISIS Wali of Tel Afar, along with four of his aides, fled toward the Syrian territories after looting millions of US dollars, Alsumaria News reported on Saturday.

Alsumaria News stated, “The so-called ISIS Wali of Tel Afar Abu Islam al-Uzbaki, along with four of his aides including Diwan Bayt al-Mal official (Treasury’s official), fled to al-Ba’j district and then to the Iraqi-Syrian borders,” pointing out that, “The Wali and his aides also stole large quantities of money, which they collect through smuggling crude oil and bullying for two years.”

“The official of Diwan al-Mal in Tal Afar is one of the most important ISIS funding officials in Tel Afar and the so-called Wilayat Dijla,” the media outlet added. “The fleeing phenomenon of the leaders of the Islamic State, after stealing money, started to increase with the approaching liberation of Nineveh and Tel Afar,” Alsumaria explained.

Intelligence information also indicated that these members started to move toward Arab and foreign countries, in order to disappear due to the lack of information about them.

Refugees from Hawija arrive in Kirkuk

Kirkuk – (IraqiNews.com) Kirkuk Police Chief, Colonel Sarhad Qadir, announced on Saturday, that 112 families fleeing from ISIS-held Hawija district southwest of the province, arrived in the safe areas in Kirkuk.

Qadir said in a press statement, “Today, 112 families, mostly women and children, arrived in the areas southwest of Kirkuk, after fleeing from the ISIS-held Hawija district (55 km southwest of Kirkuk),” adding that, “Kurdish Peshmerga forces received and provided them with water, food and medicines.”

“The province of Kirkuk is receiving large numbers of people fleeing from the ISIS-held areas on daily basis, and checking their names and date to prevent the entry of ISIS members,” Qadir added.

Noteworthy, the district of Hawija and other areas southwest of Kirkuk are still under the control of the Islamic State.

Mosul Offensive News
Iraqi forces capture Geliokhan

Nineveh – (IraqiNews.com) Iraqi army forces on Saturday captured the village of Geliokhan advancing towards the eastern shore of Tigris River, which cuts through the city of Mosul, as part of operations to recapture the city from Islamic State militants, army media said.

Troops from the army’s 9th division moved towards the east of Tigris River and liberated the village of “Geliokhan”, Lt. Gen Abdul Amir Yarallah, commander of operation “We Are Coming Nineveh,” stated.

Iraqi army forces, backed by popular militias and US-led air forces, continue a major campaign that launched in mid October to liberate Mosul, ISIS’s last bastion in Iraq.

Popular militias said recently that victories over the extremist group practically isolated the province of Nineveh from the rest of Iraq as well as from escape routes to Syria.

ISIS has reportedly been losing ground, lives and equipment since the start of operations, with many of its prominent cadres reported as either dead or fugitive.

50 percent of Mosul captured

Baghdad – (IraqiNews.com) The Iraqi army said Saturday that joint police and army operations have managed to retake 50 percent of Nineveh regions since launching in mid October, whereas police forces said they killed 50 Islamic State militants south of the city of Mosul.

“Our forces have become in control of 50 percent of Nineveh since the launch of military operations,” said Brig. Gen. Yahia Rasoul, a spokesperson for the Iraqi Joint Operations Command.

Earlier on Saturday, army forces said they had advanced towards the eastern shores of Tigris River, which cuts through Mosul, and liberated the village of Geliokhan.

Nineveh’s Mosul is the last outstanding ISIS stronghold in Iraq, and the group has been sustaining losses in lives, ground and equipment fighting off the successfully-advancing Iraqi government and popular troops over the past month.

Recent military victories over ISIS in Nineveh reportedly isolated the province from Iraq and the group’s strongholds in Syria.

Iraqi forces capture key road in Mosul

Nineveh – (IraqiNews.com) Federal Police Chief, Raed Shakir Jawdat announced on Saturday recapturing the road linking between the city of Mosul and Tel Afar district.

Jawdat said in a press statement, “Troops of the Federal Police managed, at noon today, to recapture the road linking between the city of Mosul and the district of Tel Afar.”

“Security forces also managed to liberate Umm al-Masa’id village within the southwestern axis of the battle to retake Nineveh from the Islamic State’s grip,” Jawdat added.

Joint security forces, backed by Army Aviation and international coalition are progressing in the operations to liberate the city of Mosul from the ISIS control.

Iraqi militia forces capture 2 villages in Tel Afar

Nineveh – (IraqiNews.com) Al-Hashd al-Shaabi forces managed to liberate two villages in Tel Afar district, west of the province, and raised the Iraqi flag over the buildings, after killing dozens of the Islamic State’s members, Alsumaria News reported on Saturday.

“This morning, al-Hahsd al-Shaabi forces managed to liberate the villages of al-Ajbouri and al-Fatsa, in Tel Afar district (62 km west of Mosul), and raised the Iraqi flag over their buildings,” the media outlet stated.

“Security forces also were able to kill large group of the Islamic State’s militants, after clashing with them inside the villages,” it added.

Forces from al-Hashd al-Shaabi are deployed in the western axis of the province of Nineveh, and announced on 16 November 2016, that the forces managed to liberate Tel Afar Airport.

Iraqi forces capture 3 more areas in Mosul

Nineveh – (IraqiNews.com) Media officials with the Ministry of Defense announced on Saturday, that security forces liberated three areas in Mosul completely, and killed four members of the Islamic State extremist group, including a senior leader, by an air strike in the southeastern axis of the city.

The officials said in a press statement, “Today, heroes of the Anti-Terrorism Directorate liberated the areas of Hayy al-Amn, Shafaq al-Khadraa and Shafaq al-Karama completely, and raised the Iraqi flag on their buildings, as well as recapturing Mosul Radio building.”

“International coalition air force conducted an air strike, resulting in the destruction of a vehicle and killing of four terrorists, including a senior leader the so-called Abu Anas al-Shishani, in al-Shomaysat village, in addition to destroying 3 mortar detachments in Jelikhan village,” the statement added.

“Troops of the army’s 9th Armored Brigade killed six terrorists, and destroyed two motorcycles in the southeastern axis,” the statement explained.

50 ISIS Turbans pining for the Fjords

[ARA News] Duhok – More than 50 ISIS jihadists were killed and 32 others were taken captive by the Iraqi forces in the battle for Mosul in Iraq’s northwestern Nineveh Governorate, military sources reported on Saturday.

Backed by the US-led coalition’s air forces, the Iraqi Army attacked major ISIS headquarters in southern Mosul.

“The Daesh terrorist group has suffered heavy losses in manpower and equipment under heavy bombardment by our forces over the past two days,” The Iraqi General Command said in a statement, using an Arabic acronym for the Islamic State group (ISIS). “Over 50 terrorists were killed and 32 others were taken captive in southern Mosul.”

Also, the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Units reported new gains west of the city.

“Our units liberated three new neighbourhoods in western Mosul, including al-Masaref, Qahira and al-Amin,” an Iraqi officer told ARA News over the phone.

On the other hand, the Islamic State issued a statement, published by the jihadi Amaq News Agency, saying that at least 15 Iraqi forces were killed in what the group described as “a martyrdom operation” [a suicide attack] in eastern Mosul earlier on Friday.

The Iraqi Army and Kurdish Peshmerga launched a joint operation on October 17, to capture the city and its surroundings from ISIS.

Bolstered by the coalition’s air support, Iraqi security forces recently took control of dozens of towns and villages in Mosul’s countryside. They also captured several neighborhoods in the city itself.

Iraqi Forces Liberate 5 More Towns in Tal Afar

[AlManar] Iraqi Popular Mobilization forces (PMF) continue to advance in Tal Afar, with the volunteer fighters on Saturday liberated five towns in the strategic district form the Takfiri terrorists of ISIL.

Earlier on Friday, the PMF, who is also known as al-Hashd al-Shaabi, announced the start of the fifth stage of the operation to liberate western Mosul.

On Saturday, the PMF fighters tightened grip on ISIL terrorists as they liberated Tal Samir, Northern Tal Samir, Tal Abtan, Om Nakhila and Om al-Hujairat, Iraqi sources said.

The volunteer forces met no resistance during its advance and managed to control Om al-Hujairat in a short time after the Takfiri insurgents fled the area.

Iraqi Army drones destroy IED factory in ٍSalahuddin
Salahuddin – (IraqiNews.com) An explosives mini-factory run by Islamic State militants in Salahuddin was destroyed by Iraqi army drones on Saturday, army media services reported.

CH4 drones destroyed a booby-trapped vehicle parked outside a haven for IED manufacturing in the village of Zawiya that contained more than 200 IEDs, the War Media Cell said in a statement.

Iraqi security forces occasionally report the destruction of booby-trapped vehicles which ISIS have used in their resistance to military and police operations.

Deadly explosions surged in Iraq since Islamic State militants took over a big proportion of Iraqi soils in 2014. The United Nations said earlier this month that at least 58000 people died in violence since then.

Iraqi security forces, assisted by US-led air forces and popular militias, continue operations seeking to clear the country from ISIS militants. The group has been sustaining defeats and losing ground since the beginning of an operation in October to retake the city of Mosul, its most outstanding stronghold in Iraq. It, however, began to carry out attacks at other provinces, something which observers believe is aimed at distracting security attention from Mosul and to divert focus away from its defeats there.

Anatomy of a firestorm: 180 injured, hundreds of homes in ruins, 33,000 dunams of parkland burned

The wildfires that have raged across Israel over five days have left at least 133 people injured, rendered hundreds of homes unlivable and consumed tens of thousands of dunams of protected parks and nature reserves.
The Times of Israel has more about some of those arrested here and photos of the week's adventures here.

Scary thought with the right weather pattern, what a knowledgeable wilderness fire analyst and few dozen coordinated people could do with nothing more than a smart phone, a bag of cotton balls, a can of charcoal starter and a lighter. With typical online maps that have terrain, winds and fire potentials noted they could plan and execute a firestorm larger than any seen to date. Dresden comes to mind.

a suspected turban Lion of Islam and seized a large quantity of bomb making material that he planned to use in attacks on government buildings and the Myanmar embassy in Jakarta next month, a police front man said.

The suspect was identified as Rio Priatna Wibawa, 23, who is believed to be a member of an Indonesian group that supports ISIS.

Local media reported that the amount of explosives seized would have resulted in a blast twice as powerful as the bomb that killed 202 people in a Bali nightclub in 2002.

Wibawa, who studied agricultural science at university and was unemployed, was a self-taught bomb-maker who had planned to distribute explosives to several places across Indonesia, police front man Boy Rafli Amar said on Saturday.

Indonesia has seen a string of ISIS-linked attacks this year, the biggest of which was a gun and bomb assault in the capital Jakarta that killed four people in January.

of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) retreat east towards their stronghold of al-Bab.

Led by the Elite Republican Guard, the Syrian Arab Army managed to liberate the small village of Umm Ahmad al-Talatin after overrunning the Islamic State's main defensive line this afternoon.

In addition to liberating the village of Umm Ahmad al-Talatin, the Syrian Arab Army has captured a number of small hilltops en route to the strategic radar base located directly west of al-Bab.

The Syrian Armed Forces were able to make these rapid gains today, thanks in large-part to the Kurdish-led "Syrian Democratic Forces" (SDF), who have applied pressure on the Islamic State's positions in the north.

Syrian rebels in direct contact with ISIS in Raqqa
[AAWSAT] Beirut- A Kurdish leader said the international coalition, whose mission was to provide logistic and advisory support to the predominantly Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has been fighting face to face against ISIS with Kurdish People’s Protection Units militia (YPG).

The leader noted that U.S. and European soldiers are also fighting ISIS militants in the field.

Adviser to the SDF general command Nasser Mansour told Asharq Al-Awsat that U.S. soldiers and others affiliated with the international coalition are fighting ISIS for the first time in the battlefield.

Mansour said that in previous battles there used to be advisors and commanders in the operations room in addition to foreigners who fight under the banner of YPG.

However, since the beginning of the Raqqa battle, soldiers working for the coalition have started fighting ISIS on land, noting that the American who died in a landmine explosion in Tal al-Samn was a soldier in the U.S. army, added Mansour.

Washington announced on Friday the death of the first American soldier in Syria, precisely in the vicinity of Ayn Issa in northern Raqqa by an improvised explosive device.

“The entire counter-ISIS coalition sends its condolences to this hero’s, family, friends and teammates,” said Lt. Gen Stephen Townsend, the commander of the U.S.-led coalition fighting ISIS in Iraq and Syria.

However, Director of Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) Rami Abdel Rahman told Asharq Al-Awsat that two other American soldiers were killed earlier in June in Syria although Washington claimed this was the first casualty for U.S. forces in the country’s fighting.

According to several reports, “massive quantities of mines,” planted by the extremist organization in villages its militants withdrew or were expelled from in Raqqa, are hindering the movement of Kurdish fighters.

Kurds expressed their fear that the campaign launched on November 5 to fight ISIS in Raqqa with the support of the U.S.-led coalition will take much more time than expected to achieve its target.

Syria regime forces retake largest Aleppo rebel area
[ENGLISH.ALARABIYA.NET] Syrian government forces have retaken "full control" of the rebel-held district of Masaken Hanano in northern battlefield city Aleppo, state media said on Saturday.

State television said "the armed forces retook full control" of the largest rebel district in the east of the city, and official news agency SANA said operations were now under way to clear it of mines and bombs.

"The armed forces retook full control of Masaken Hanano after having put an end to the presence of faceless myrmidons there," the state broadcaster said, referring to the rebels fighting the regime of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Trampler of Homs...
SANA said government forces, backed by its allies, also recaptured the area around the district and "army engineers are clearing it of bombs and explosives planted by the faceless myrmidons in the streets and squares."

The capture of Masaken Hanano in the northeast of Aleppo could give the army line-of-fire control over several other parts of the city’s rebel-held east.

Regime forces had been advancing inside the neighborhood for several days, and on Friday state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
said they were progressing "from three axes."

The operation is part of a major offensive now in its 12th day to take back all of Aleppo, Syria’s second city and its economic capital before the war broke out in March 2011.

Since November 15, regime bombardment of eastern Aleppo has killed 212 civilians, including 27 children, according to the Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

Observatory head rami Abdel Rahman told AFP on Saturday that the government forces were in control of 80 percent of Masaken Hanano and had the rest in their line of fire.

"They just hundreds of metres (yards) away from isolating the northern districts of east Aleppo from the southern ones," he said.

Dozens of rebel forces die in Syrian Army Aleppo attacks
ALEPPO: The Syrian Army advanced in Aleppo on Friday, pounding the rebel-held east with strikes that killed dozens and added to the despair for more than 250,000 civilians under siege.

Ten days into the Syrian government's renewed bid to recapture all of battered second city Aleppo, regime bombardment has killed nearly 190 civilians and left residents desperate for respite.

The regime is hoping to score its most important victory yet of the five-year civil war, dealing a potentially decisive blow to the rebels by recapturing eastern neighborhoods they overran in 2012.
