Drone crashes in Puntland
BOSSASO, Somalia -- A reconnaissance drone crashed in north eastern region of Bari in Puntland, the second drone to crash in Somalia this week, Garowe Online reports.

Puntland authorities confirmed that the reconnaissance drone crashed in the early hours of Saturday in the town of Qow 20 KMs from Bossaso. It is unclear which country the drone belonged to, however the Pentagon stated that the one of their reconnaissance drone crashed in the Lower Shabelle region.
Goodness. That seems clear enough to me, but perhaps an announcement from God Himself, complete with angels on trumpets and little cherubs buzzing around would satisfy Their Puntish Eminences.
Ahem. More like Allah with djinns and houris...
A local security source described the drone as a small jet drone which is now in Puntland custody.

The Pentagon identified the drone that crashed near Bulo Marer on Tuesday as a Schiebel Camcopter S-100 a relatively small helicopter drone.

According to security analysts, the U.S. -- [who] rarely admit to clandestine operations -- admitted to the drone crash after Al Shabaab posted pictures of the drone and its serial number.

Qow is located on the foothills of the Golis Mountain Range where Al Shabaab insurgents have strongholds deep in the mountain range that stretches beyond northern Somalia. Puntland Defence forces suppressed an insurgency by the terrorist organization in August of 2010 and have defence lines along the mountain range.

Local sources said that there were a series of explosions and heavy artillery could be heard Friday.

AMISOM said that they countered the ambush by Al Shabaab forces who targeted government forces rehabilitating a road that runs through the region in southern Somalia. The African Union forces said they captured Al Shabaab fighters in the clashes.

Al Shabaab stated that they inflicted many allied casualties in the attack on Friday adding that they destroyed an AMISOM military vehicle in the clashes.

Yemeni soldiers foil suicide attack
[Pak Daily Times] Yemeni soldiers shot at a suspected al Qaeda jacket wallah on Sunday as he tried to ram an explosives-laden vehicle into a gas pumping station in the south, a local official said. The official said soldiers guarding the facility, part of a $4.5 billion LNG project at the southern port city of Balhaf, fired on the vehicle as it sped towards them, causing it to blow up outside the station's entrance. "The vehicle went kaboom! before it reached the port and without causing any losses to the soldiers," the official, who asked not to be named, told Rooters. He said the suicide bomber had died in the blast and that the facility was unaffected.

The LNG project has two production trains with a combined capacity of 6.7 million tonnes per year, with exports going mainly to Asia, and also to Europe and the Americas. Yemen's gas and oil pipelines have often been sabotaged since anti-government protests broke out in January 2011, but this was the first reported attack on the heavily guarded pumping station. The pipeline transports LNG from Maarib to the Balhaf export terminal, which opened in 2009 and is led by French oil major Total with three South Korea companies holding stakes.

Bangladesh
21 BCL men indicted
[Bangla Daily Star] Almost six months into the killing of Biswajit Das, a Dhaka court yesterday indicted 21 Bangladesh Chhatra League
... the student wing of the Bangla Awami League ...
activists of Jagannath University for the gruesome murder.

Of the accused, seven BCL men, locked away
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
after being identified from still photographs and video footages of the December 9 murder, pleaded not guilty
"Wudn't me."
before the court.

Three of them -- Mahfuzur Rahman Nahid, Kaiyyum Miah and Md Saiful Islam -- sought bail only to be denied.

While indicting the 21 men, Md Zahirul Haque of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court read out the charges highlighting the brutality of the murder, which shook the nation to its core.

The trial of the seven, along with another Jagannath student, Golam Mostofa, locked away
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
at his village home in Manikganj on May 26, is set to begin on June 13.

Four of them have already made judicial statements confessing their role in the murder.

But police still have a major task to accomplish: arresting the rest 13 Chhatra League men who went into hiding.

Proprietor of Amantron Tailors at Shakharibazar area in Sutrapur, Bishwajit, 24, was on his way to his shop in the morning of December 9 when the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance enforced a road-blockade programme.

Following some blasts in front of Bahadur Shah Park, BCL men from JnU rushed there and swooped on Biswajit, mistaking him for a blockader. They hacked him with machetes and beat him up with iron rods and hockey sticks.

The ill-fated youth bled to death at Mitford Hospital.

As newspapers and television channels ran series of reports with stills and footages showing the perpetrators, law enforcers arrested the seven in December.

They are: Nahid, Saiful, Kayyum, AHM Kibria, GM Rasheduzzaman Shaon, Saiful Islam, Mohammad Rafiqul Islam alias Shakil and Emdadul Haque.

Shakil, Nahid, Shaon and Emdad admitted their guilt and disclosed before the court names of others who participated in the killing.

On March 5, detectives pressed charges against the 21 accused.

Britain
Man admits threats to kill Prince Harry
[Pak Daily Times] A man is being held in jug Sunday after admitting threatening to kill Britannia's Prince Harry, police said on Sunday.

Ashraf Islam, 30, was locked away
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on May 23 -- the day after a British soldier was butchered to death in a London street in a suspected Islamist attack -- after attending a west London cop shoppe. Harry, 28 -- a British army attack helicopter pilot who has served two tours of duty in Afghanistan -- is third in line to the throne. Islam was charged on Saturday with threatening to murder the prince, contrary to Section 16 of the 1861 Offences against the Person Act. That section states: "A person who without lawful excuse makes to another a threat, intending that that other would fear it would be carried out, to kill that other or a third person shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction on indictment to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 10 years." Islam, of no fixed abode, appeared in jug at Uxbridge Magistrates' Court in west London later Saturday and pleaded guilty. He was remanded in jug to be sentenced on a date yet to be fixed.

Police take war on extremists to 'khat' houses
Police are targeting 'khat' houses in Woolwich amid fears they are recruiting grounds for Islamic extremists. One of the two Woolwich suspects, Michael Adebolajo, used it, according to his associates. The substance is legal in Britain but banned in many other countries, including the US, where it is regarded as a narcotic ranked alongside heroin and cocaine.
Weed shares the same rank in much of the USA, with California, Colorado and Washington excluded. Despite state attempts at decriminalization, it's still considered a "schedule one" narcotic by the Feds. That can be translated as: Weed = heroin = cocaine = khat = meth.
Somali community worker Abukar Awale told The Mail on Sunday that police officers had visited several mafrish -- the name given to houses devoted to khat chewing -- since the murder of Drummer Lee Rigby.

'I've heard they were asking questions about the people frequenting them,' he said. 'Some time before the murder, a few of them were closed down by police.'

Extremist Abdul Mumin was seen in a mafrish trying to recruit 'disaffected' youths
In one mafrish -- a basement room in a house close to Woolwich mosque -- Mr Awale saw extremist preacher Abdul Qadir Mumin, who has been linked to Adebolajo, trying to recruit 'disaffected' youths.

He said: 'There were about 20 young men lying around on mattresses, chewing khat, and Mumin was preaching to them, saying that Britain had failed them but that a better life beckoned. He left each of them his card and urged them to get in touch.

'I am aware of cases in which youths have been recruited in this way. One young man from Woolwich rang his father, who lives in Cardiff, to say that he was on the Somali border. His father immediately called the police, who in turn contacted the Kenyan authorities who arrested his son and deported him, like Adebolajo.

'Back in Britain he told police that he wasn't recruited in a mosque -- which had been their assumption -- but in a mafrish. I am not sure if Adebolajo was recruited in this way but it wouldn't surprise me.'

In 2010, Adebolajo left South London to try to join the Somali terror group Al-Shabaab, of which Mumin is a senior member. Complaining that he was coming under intense scrutiny from the security services, Mumin left for the war-torn country around the same time.

Soon after his arrival in Somalia, he burnt his British passport in front of hundreds of supporters while declaring his lifelong support for jihad and vowing never to return to the UK.
That worked out well-- such a clever young man!

And now a feel good crime story...

One unidentified individual died and two of his accomplices were beaten in a lynching in Independencia colony in Monterrey Friday night, according to a Milenio news report.

Three hooded suspects attempted a home invasion at a residence, but when the mask of one of the attackers was removed, somehow a call went out, and a total of 120 local residents fell upon the group, beating them.

Before units of the Policia Federal and Fuerza Civil could arrive, one of the alleged attackers was dead and two others were severely wounded. According to the report, the colony was where a number of kidnappings and extortion crimes had taken place.

Thousands take to streets on third day of Turkey protests
[IN.REUTERS] Tens of thousands of people erupted into the streets in Turkey's four biggest cities on Sunday and clashed with riot police firing tear gas in the third day of the fiercest anti-government protests in years.

Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan blamed the main secular opposition party for inciting the crowds, whom he called "a few looters", and said the protests were aimed at depriving his ruling AK Party of votes as elections begin next year.

The unrest erupted on Friday when trees were torn down at a park in Istanbul's main Taksim Square under government plans to redevelop the area, but widened into a broad show of defiance against the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP).

Erdogan said the plans to remake the square, long an iconic rallying point for mass demonstrations, would go ahead, including the construction of a new mosque and the rebuilding of a replica Ottoman-era barracks.

Erdogan said the protests had nothing to do with the plans.

"It's entirely ideological," he said in an interview broadcast on Turkish television.

"The main opposition party which is making resistance calls on every street is provoking these protests ... This is about my ruling party, myself and the looming municipality elections in Istanbul and efforts to make the AK Party lose votes here."

Turkey is due to hold local and presidential elections next year, in which Erdogan is expected to stand, followed by parliamentary polls in 2015.

The main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) denied orchestrating the unrest, blaming Erdogan's policies.

"Today the people on the street across Turkey are not exclusively from the CHP, but from all ideologies and from all parties," senior party member Mehmet Akif Hamzacebi said.

"What Erdogan has to do is not to blame CHP but draw the necessary lessons from what happened," he told Rooters.

The protests, started by a small group of environmental campaigners, mushroomed when police used force to eject them from the park on Taksim Square. As word spread online, the demonstrations have drawn in a wide range of people of all ages from across the political and social spectrum.

Protests on Sunday were not as violent as the past two days but police used tear gas to try to disperse hundreds of people in Ankara's main Kizilay square. There were similar festivities in Izmir and Adana, Turkey's third and fourth biggest cities.

In Istanbul's Taksim Square, the atmosphere was more festive with some chanting for Erdogan to resign and others singing and dancing. There was little obvious police presence. But there were later festivities between police and protesters near Erdogan's office in a former Ottoman palace in the city.

House GOP defense bill blocks Guantanamo closing
Rebuffing President Barack Obama's latest plea, House Republicans on Monday proposed keeping open the military-run prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, by barring the administration from transferring its terror suspects to the United States or a foreign country such as Yemen.

The provisions dealing with the fate of the remaining 166 prisoners are part of a defense policy bill drafted by Armed Services Committee Chairman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif. The chairman released the bill Monday, two days before Republicans and Democrats on the committee will vote on it.

Overall, the bill would authorize $638 billion for the military in the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1, including $86 billion for war costs. The committee responded to concerns that the military was headed toward a readiness crisis due to automatic spending cuts by adding nearly $5 billion beyond the president's budget request for training programs, equipment maintenance, spare parts and more.

The final bill is likely to include additional provisions addressing the epidemic of sexual assaults in the military, missile defense and weapons programs, with most reflecting the will of Republicans who control the House. The full chamber is expected to vote on the bill this summer and then work out differences when the Democratic-run Senate passes its version.

"The bill restores vital readiness programs, invests in capabilities to meet the threats of the future, and supports our troops and their families," McKeon said in a statement.

Addressing a range of policy issues, the chairman's legislation would block the U.S. from spending $2.6 billion to train and equip Afghan security forces until the Defense and State departments have certified to Congress that the two countries have a bilateral security agreement governing the presence of U.S. forces there after the current combat mission ends in 2014.

McKeon's bill also urges the Obama administration to "fully consider all courses of action" to remove President Syrian President Bashar Assad's regime from power. The legislation does not endorse providing weapons to the rebel forces in Syria, as the Senate Foreign Relations Committee did last month.

Local residents said that dozens of heavily armed snuffies entered the house of headmaster Haji Rehman and opened fire, killing him on the spot.

It was not clear why the man was targeted, but locals said that he had developed differences with the bully boys, which eventually led to his death. "Probably he was considered 'pro-government' by the bully boys," said a local elder on the condition of anonymity.

It is the first incident of its kind in which a government servant, other than that of Khasadar Force and Levies, has been targeted.

Previously, the snuffies had attacked Levies checkposts, kidnapped 22 people and killed them in cold blood.

MILF accuses Philippine military of siding with MNLF
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on Sunday accused the Philippine military of jeopardizing the ceasefire, accusing a Philippine Army brigade of siding with the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) during fighting in North Cotabato.

The MILF Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities (CCCH)said the Army's 602nd Infantry Brigade may be at fault if the ceasefire between the MILF and the government collapses. MILF CCCH member Omar Bayao said, “We cannot understand the reasons why the 602nd Brigade had been joining the fighting and bombarding the MILF other than their sneaky motive of undermining the ceasefire and the peace process between the government and MILF. They are leaving no other [choice] for the MILF but to defend themselves."

Bayao claimed the 602nd Brigade under Gen. Ademar Tomaro, assisted the MNLF by attacking the MILF in Matalam. The MILF forces had been engaged in skirmishes in the area with the forces of the MNLF's Datu Dima Ambil.

The MILF disclosed that a reconciliation ceremony for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between the local troops of Datu Dima and the MILF had been scheduled for June 5. The settlement was made through the facilitation and support of the mayors of Matalam and Pagalungan.

But the MILF, citing recent attacks and the posture of Tomaro's forces, said the reconciliation may not happen. Worse, it said the ceasefire between the government and MILF and even the framework agreement on the Bangsamoro (FAB) they signed in Malacañang last October could be "adversely affected."

Lebanese Fighters Killed in Syria as More Rockets Land in Hermel
[An Nahar] At least one Hizbullah member was killed overnight in festivities with Syrian rebels on the Syrian side of the border with Leb, a security source told Agence La Belle France Presse on Sunday.

"Clashes took place between a group of FSA (Free Syrian Army) and a group of Hizbullah members coming from Baalbek in a border area between the outskirts of Baalbek and Damascus province in Syria," the source said.

"One member of Hizbullah was killed along with several rebels," he said, without specifying how many rebels died.

The festivities took place in a mountainous region inside Syria between the Baalbek area, a Hizbullah stronghold, and Syria's Damascus province, where the border is often not clearly demarcated.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights watchdog, which has a network of activists, doctors and lawyers on the ground in Syria, confirmed the festivities, but was unable to say how many people were killed.

Some reports have said there have been dozens of casualties on both sides and that the festivities had taken place inside Lebanese territories.

The festivities took place as least two rockets fired from Syria landed in Leb's border area of Hermel on Sunday, security sources said.

The rockets hit the northeastern area of Hermel, a day after 18 rockets and mortars rounds from Syria slammed into the Baalbek region, the largest cross-border salvo to hit a Hizbullah stronghold since Syrian rebels threatened to retaliate for the group's armed support of Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Despoiler of Deraa...

Hizbullah stepped up its involvement in the Syrian war in mid-May by joining a regime offensive against the rebel-held Syrian town of Qusayr, about 10 kilometers from Leb.

The town has since become one of the war's major military and political flashpoints.

Lebanese sources also reported the death of a Hizbullah fighter near Zabadani, northwest of Damascus.

And the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and family members said a Lebanese member of the al-Nusra Front was killed fighting Hizbullah members in the Qusayr area.

#3  Hezbollah, Syrian rebels clash on Lebanese soil
Syrian rebels fought with gunmen from Lebanon's Hezbollah militia in a deadly clash on Lebanese soil overnight, a security official and local media said Sunday, in the latest sign Syria's civil war is spilling over the country's borders.

It was the worst clash on Lebanese territory since the outbreak of the conflict more than two years ago.

Hezbollah and Syria's rebels fight on opposite sides inside Syria, and tensions between them have risen sharply since the Lebanese militia stepped up its armed support for President Bashar Assad's regime last month.

Rebel fighters have threatened to attack Hezbollah bases in Lebanon, and on Saturday 18 rockets and mortar rounds hit Lebanon's eastern Baalbek region, a Hezbollah stronghold.

In the night from Saturday to Sunday, Hezbollah apparently encircled and ambushed a group of Syrian rebels and allied Lebanese fighters whom they suspected of rocketing Baalbek a day earlier, said the Lebanese security official. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations and because the details were not yet clear.

He said a Hezbollah fighter and several rebels were killed in the clashes in a remote area between Baalbek and the Syrian border.

14 Hurt as Clashes Renew between Bab al-Tabbaneh, Jabal Mohsen
[An Nahar] At least fourteen people were maimed as armed festivities renewed on Sunday in the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
after several days of relative calm.

State-run National News Agency said the fighting broke out at 7:00 p.m. between Jabal Mohsen and the neighboring areas of al-Amerkan and al-Baqqar before escalating and spreading to Bab al-Tabbaneh, Baal al-Darawish, Syria Street, al-Omari Street, Souk al-Qameh and Hariri Project.

"The sounds of machinegun fire and kabooms are echoing in the area, amid sniper activity in Syria Street and the adjacent areas," NNA said.

Fourteen people were maimed in the festivities, the agency added, identifying 13 of them as Haydar Slim, Mohammed Merehbi, Hasan Ibrahim, Taha al-Rizz, Bilal Abdul Latif, Elisar al-Kour, Ali al-Abed, Khodr Khodr, Mazen Yehia, Ayman Koja, Bilal al-Lababidi, Mohammed Taleb and a boy from the Othman family who was hit by a stray bullet in Abi Samra.

It said bullets reached al-Mitain Street, al-Zahriyeh, al-Thaqafeh Street and Abi Samra, which are outside the conflict zone.

Earlier, OTV said three children were maimed in Jabal Mohsen as Future TV said one person was maimed in Bab al-Tabbaneh.

Future TV said the army was shooting back at the sources of gunfire in Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen.

Sources from the Arab Democratic Party, the dominant political and armed force in Jabal Mohsen, told LBCI: "Gunmen suddenly opened gunfire against Jabal Mohsen from all frontiers in Bab al-Tabbaneh."

The fighting forced the closure of the international highway linking Tripoli and Akkar and the roads leading to Tripoli's al-Zahriyeh, Bab al-Hadid and al-Mallouleh, NNA reported.

It later said festivities abated although sniper gunfire was still targeting Syria Street, al-Baqqar, al-Amerkan, Jabal Mohsen, Souk al-Qameh and Hariri Project.

At least 31 people were killed and more than 200 maimed in week-long gunbattles that ended on Monday.

The sectarian fighting between the two main neighborhoods of Bab al-Tabbaneh and Jabal Mohsen stretches back four decades to Leb's civil war. But it has become more frequent and increasingly lethal since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011. The two districts support opposite sides.

Several houses, shops and cars had also been destroyed in the week-long gunbattles that pitted Sunnis that back the revolution against Syrian Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

and mostly Alawites who are from Assad's sect.

Damascus car bombing kills 9 security forces members
[Pak Daily Times] A boom-mobileing in Damascus on Sunday killed at least nine members of the security forces, a watchdog said, as regime warplanes bombarded the embattled Syrian town of Qusayr, a rebel holdout.

The violence came as La Belle France's foreign minister said a conference to find a political solution to the conflict could be delayed from June to July.

And in Leb, two rockets fired from Syria struck a border area and Israeli warplanes could be heard flying low over several parts of the country.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the suicide boom-mobile, in the east of the capital, appeared to have been carried out by the krazed killer Al-Nusra Front, which is allied with Al-Qaeda, although there was no immediate confirmation.

"At least nine regime forces were killed in the kaboom of a boom-mobile near a cop shoppe in the Jubar neighbourhood," Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

Syrian state news agency SANA reported "10 citizens were maimed when a car driven by a terrorist went kaboom! in Jubar", but gave no information on deaths in the attack.

It said five of the injured were seriously maimed.

The Observatory said fierce festivities between rebels and regime forces were ongoing in Jubar, a contested neighbourhood which has been targeted by regime air strikes and mortar attacks for several months.

Elsewhere in the capital, the Observatory said, regime forces shelled the Al-Hajar al-Aswad, Assali and Qaddam neighbourhoods in the south and southwest of the city overnight.

In the central province of Homs, regime aircraft carried out a wave of air raids against the northern part of Qusayr and the outskirts of the town, the Observatory said.

"Warplanes carried out multiple raids against the northern part of the city and the area between Dabaa and Qusayr," the Observatory said, adding there were no details yet on injuries or deaths.

A day earlier, international aid groups called for the evacuation of civilians trapped in the town, where regime forces launched an assault two weeks ago.

The Observatory said the regime has continued to bolster its forces in Qusayr, a prize for both the regime and the rebels as it links Damascus to the coast, and is near the Lebanese border, providing a key rebel conduit for weapons and fighters.

Abdel Rahman said around 1,000 maimed people were trapped inside Qusayr, but UN officials suggested the figure could be even higher.

"We understand there may also be as many as 1,500 maimed people in urgent need of immediate evacuation for emergency medical treatment, and that the general situation in Al-Qusayr is desperate," said a joint statement by UN humanitarian chief Valerie Amos and UN human rights
One man's rights are another man's existential threat.
commissioner Navi Pillay.

"We urge the parties to agree to an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian agencies to evacuate the maimed and provide life-saving treatment and supplies."

UN chief the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
also urged "all sides to do their utmost to avoid civilian casualties," and to help evacuate the maimed.

The international community has pinned its hopes for resolving the conflict peacefully on a conference that had been mooted for June in Geneva.

But French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said on Sunday that it could be delayed.

"'Geneva 2' is in my opinion a last-chance conference. I hope it will take place, I think it could take place in July," he said.

The fighting in Syria has increasingly drawn in neighbouring Leb, despite Beirut's official neutrality on the conflict.

Members of the powerful Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah, a staunch ally of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

And some members of Leb's Sunni Mohammedan community have also crossed the border to fight alongside the Sunni-led rebels, encouraged by holy mans including the influential Qatar-based Yusuf al-Qaradawi

In 2004, 2,500 Muslim academics from Saudi Arabia, Iraq and from the Palestinian territories condemned Qaradawi, and accused him of giving Islam a bad name....
On Sunday, a security source said Hezbollah fighters and Syrian rebels clashed just inside Syria long the Lebanese border, leaving one Hezbollah member dead.

The fighting also spilled into Leb, with two rockets fired from Syria landed in the northeastern Hermel region, a Hezbollah stronghold.

Leb's President Michel Suleiman
...before assuming office as President, he held the position of commander of the Leb Armed Forces. That was after the previous commander, the loathesome Emile Lahoud, took office as president in November of 1998. Likely the next president of Leb will be whoever's commander of the armed forces, too...
meanwhile said his country would file an "urgent complaint" to the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
after Israeli warplanes violated Lebanese airspace.
