Al Jazeera Says 3 Reporters Arrested In Egypt Over Illegal Hotel Broadcast
[AlAhram] As government campaign against the Qatar-based station continues, Egyptian police say two Al-Jazeera

Yez got nuttin' on me, coppers! Nuttin'!

Qatar's Al Jazeera Channel said on Monday Egyptian security forces have arrested three of its journalists following Interior Ministry accusations of illegally broadcasting from a hotel suite.

#2  In Egypt (and elsewhere,) Al-Jazeera is viewed as a facet of the Qatari government; Qatar's leadership were very strong sponsors of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Egypt Hands 139 Morsi Backers 2-Year Jail Terms
[An Nahar] An Egyptian court Monday sentenced 139 Islamist supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
to two years in jail over violence that erupted in July, state news agency MENA reported.

MENA said the sentences could be subject to appeal, while the defendants, who are currently in jug, could each be bailed for 5,000 Egyptian pounds ($700 or 550 euros).

The military deposed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, on July 3 and his supporters have regularly staged demonstrations demanding his reinstatement.

The demonstrations have often deteriorated into violence and street festivities, with the military-installed authorities cracking down on Islamists.

The repression has left more than 1,000 people killed since Morsi's ouster and thousands more tossed in the calaboose
Drop the rosco, Muggsy, or you're one with the ages!
, including the entire top leadership of the Moslem Brüderbund to which Morsi belongs.

Last week the authorities designated the Brotherhood a "terrorist organization" and accused the 85-year-old movement of a kaboom north of Cairo that killed 15 people.

Hundreds of thousands of Brotherhood members now face prison sentences if they hold demonstrations or are found in possession of the movement's recordings or literature.

It also means that Brotherhood leaders currently on trial face possible death sentences if found guilty.

Tunisian Ansar Al-Sharia leader seized in Misrata
[Libya Herald] Confusion still surrounds today's capture in Misrata of the leader of Tunisia's Ansar Al-Sharia, with Washington denying early reports that US special forces were involved in the operation.

That Saifallah Benhassine, also known as Abu Iyadh, who heads Tunisia's branch of the bad boy Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia
...a Salafist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends. There are groups of the same name in Libya, Tunisia and Yemen, with the Libyan and Tunisian versions currently most active...
, was seized, does not seem in doubt. But the details of his arrest and indeed his current whereabouts remain unclear. Normally reliable sources in Misrata declined to speak to the Libya Herald about what had happened. Tunisian security sources were reported as saying today that that Benhassine was incarcerated

Troops Find 6-Ton Explosives Cache in Mali
[An Nahar] French and Chadian troops have destroyed almost six tons of explosives and weapons found in Mali's rebel-infested desert north, the United Nations
...an organization which on balance has done more bad than good, with the good not done well and the bad done thoroughly...

The Chadian soldiers, from the U.N.'s MINUSMA peacekeeping mission, were patrolling an area near the Algerian border with troops from La Belle France's Operation Serval when they made the discovery, a U.N. statement said.

#1  The statement said the destruction of 5.7 tons of ammonium nitrate and some 40 grenades had dealt "another severe blow to the resources of terrorist groups."

The real "blow" comes when you flatten the manufacturing facilities which produces and ship the AN. We've really never made that bold leap in Afghanistan however. The facilities belong to our friends in Pakistan. In fact the Pakistani Fatima Group recently attempted to build a plant along the Ohio river in Indiana. It was only constituent pressure on congress that precluded it from happening.

#2  Pix or it didn't happen.
You can move six tons in a big truck along a decent road. Then your depot needs to be near the decent road.

Or you can move six tons in a lot of small vehicles over lousy terrain.
Somebody should notice.

Or you can get something like an off road five-ton military vehicle.
Somebody's in on it.

Like to know if the stash was "discovered" by patrols, discovered because intel sent the patrols into the area without telling why, or busted by intel.

Militants assaulted the armed forces armed with machine guns and launch-rockets. Far from being a simple case of hit and run, Death Eaters aimed to lay waste the outpost and seize control of that particular area, right on the outskirt of Lahj where they could control all comings and goings.

Bahrain Says It Seized Iranian, Syrian Explosives
[An Nahar] Bahraini authorities said Monday they have seized a boat smuggling explosives made in Iran and Syria into the Sunni-ruled kingdom, which quashed a Shiite-led uprising in 2011.

The boat, which had two Bahrainis aboard, was stopped over the weekend at two nautical miles (3.7 kilometers) off the archipelago's coast, public security chief Major-General Tareq al-Hasan said.

He said it had been tracked over a distance of 118 nautical miles (218 kilometers) northeast of the kingdom.

#3  Strange - smuggling across the Gulf is generally overlooked. Someone must have tipped off the authorities, or the Bahrainis are unusually watchful.

#4  Or the shipper didn't pay off the right people, perhaps?
Posted by: Barbara || 12/31/2013 20:21 Comments || Top||

#5  Maybe. There is (or was) a lucrative cross-traffic in smuggling goods across the Gulf.

That they tracked it practically leaving Iran (there's roughly 140-150 nautical miles of water between Bahrain and Iran, and they tracked it at 118 nautical miles out) indicates the Bahrain authorities were either extra-alert or tipped off.

NPA vows more, bigger attacks in 2014
Maoist militants promised to launch wider and bigger offensives with more armed fighters next year.

Jorge "Ka Oris" Madlos, the spokesperson of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) for Mindanao, said the New People's Army (NPA) will intensify attacks especially in the southern Philippines. The NPA is the armed wing of the NDFP and the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP).

Madlos told reporters during the CPP’s 45th founding anniversary on December 26, they will deploy more NPA fighters in their attacks against the government forces in 2014. Madlos claimed that in 2010, the NPA initiated 250 attacks, 350 armed operations in 2011, and more than 400 offensives in 2012.

He said, “This year, the revolutionary forces launched more than 400 offensives, and next year, we will launch more than 500 tactical offensives."

Based on the CPP statement, part of their tactical offensives were successful assaults on Del Monte Philippines plantation, the raid conducted on an army detachment in Barangay Lantad, Balingasag, Misamis Oriental.

Also included was the confiscation of firearms of Dasia Security Agency in Tagum City and the raid on Philippine National Police headquarters in Kibawe town in Bukidnon and Don Victoriano, Misamis Occidental.

One Person Injured in Shooting in Tripoli
Unknown assailants opened fire on Monday at an Alawite resident of the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
reported the National News Agency.

It said that Youssef Khalil was maimed in his legs in the Bab al-Hadeed area in Tripoli. He has since been transferred to Saydet Zgharta Hospital for treatment.

Five days ago and in a similar incident, Khodr Abbas from Tripoli's majority Alawite Jabal Mohsen neighborhood was also maimed in a shooting in the city.

Over 20 of such incidents against Jabal Mohsen residents have been reported in a reflection of the impact the Syrian crisis is having on Leb.

The divisions in Syria are being reflected in the city as Tripoli's Jabal Mohsen neighborhood supports the country's ruling regime while the Bab al-Tabbaneh neighborhood backs the Syrian rebels.

The tensions between the rival neighborhoods have erupted into armed festivities between the two sides on numerous occasions since the Syrian uprising began in March 2011.

"An Israeli force backed by a troop carrier and a military jeep on Monday opened a metallic gate in the al-Thugra area, which lies on the border opposite the entrance of the town of Adaisseh, sending a sniffer dog into a disputed area," Leb's National News Agency reported.

The dog advanced 30 meters and scoured the area for some time, the agency added.

The Lebanese army and U.N. peacekeepers went on alert as a precaution, it said.

On Sunday, the Israeli army fired around 32 artillery shells into the Lebanese border area of al-Khraybeh, after unknown individuals launched two rockets into northern Israel from southern Leb.

Syria Evacuates 5,000 From Town Near Damascus
[Ynet] The Syrian government evacuated some 5,000 people Sunday from an embattled industrial town near Damascus where al-Qaeda-linked rebels have been battling government troops for more than two weeks, the state news agency said.
... and if you can't believe the state news agency who can you believe?

Opposition fighters from Jabhat al-Nusra, or the Nusra Front, swept into Adra northeast of the capital in mid-December, reportedly killing civilians, many of whom are members of the Alawite and Druse sects. Both minority communities largely support Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
