#2  Do you mean this article from yesterday, jvalentour? At midnight Rantburg rolls over to a new day and new articles, the previous day's article links and discussion threads being accessible in the archives. The articles themselves, with inline commentary, cannot be generally seen, a response to the whole R1ghth4ven fiasco, unless one contacts Mr. Pruitt directly for permission. I've had to do that several times over the years.

If you mean something else, please do explain.

#5  There are only about 250 Korean family names currently in use, and the three most common (Kim, Lee, and Park) account for nearly half of the population. - source

Had a Kim 1, Kim 2 and Kim 3 for KATUSAs in my unit. IIRC at one time S.Korea had a law at one time that prohibited marriage between individuals with the same family name to avoid 'genetic' issues, but it was eventually 'clarified' since nearly half the population was composed of those three cited names.

Afghanistan
Roadside bomb kills 10 in Afghanistan
A roadside bomb killed 10 people in northwest Afghanistan, the latest civilians slaughtered during the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha. The blast struck a police vehicle in Badghis province late on Monday, killing two officers plus eight civilians from the same family in another vehicle which was following it.

Badghis provincial council chairman Faizullah Azimi, "A mine planted by the Taliban hit a police vehicle in Qadis district yesterday evening leaving two policemen and eight civilians dead. All the civilians were members of the same family." He said two policemen and a child were also injured.

The toll was confirmed by a spokesman for the interior ministry, Siddiq Siddiqui, who said the dead included women and children. He called the attack "cowardly."

Roadside blast kills south Afghan police chief
[Dawn] A roadside kaboom killed a district police chief in restive southern Afghanistan and his two bodyguards, police said.

Helmand
...an Afghan province populated mostly by Pashtuns, adjacent to Injun country in Pak Balochistan...
province police chief Mohammad Hakim Angar said on Monday that Mohammad Saifullah, the police chief in the province's Garm Ser district, was killed when a roadside kaboom detonated as he and two of his bodyguards were driving by on Sunday night.

Helmand is one of Afghanistan's most violent provinces and sits in the heart of the Taliban's traditional stronghold in the south.

Security responsibilities in the province's capital have already been handed over to Afghan forces by NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
while two other districts in the province are being recommended for an upcoming second phase of handovers. Garm Ser is not among them.

Africa Horn
Al-Shabaab on the run in south zone
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Kenyan troops operating in the southern part of the border with Somalia estimate that they have removed the Al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban. The organization's current leader is Ibrahim Haji Jama Mee'aad, also known as Ibrahim al-Afghani. Fazul Abdullah Mohammed, a Kenyan al-Qaeda member, is considered the group's military leader...
from about 50 per cent of the area. (Read: Al-Shabaab bully boyz fall back to defend Kismayu)

Speaking to the Nation at Ishakani Military Camp, about four kilometres from the border at the tip of Kenya, Lieutenant Colonel John Maison Nkoimo said the troops are firm on the ground and remain focused on achieving their objective.

"We're pretty sure that southwards of Burgavo, we don't expect any hostilities," said Lt Col Nkoimo, who is commanding the Southern Sector.

The camp at Ishakani is the launching point for troops in the Southern Sector of Operation Linda Nchi, which is being carried out in a three-pronged attack from the North at El Wak, Centre at Liboi and the South at the coast and northwards.

Ishakani is a few kilometres from Ras Kamboni, the former headquarters of the Al-Qaeda in East Africa, which was taken on Mashujaa Day.

Burgavo remains under the control of the Kenyan troops, who will then embark on the attack on the important port city of Kismayu, in a bid to strangle the Al-Shabaab economically.

Lt Col Nkoimo said the battle for Kismayu would be fought "on our own terms and at our own time".

In Nairobi, President Kibaki for the second time warned that Kenya will not relent in its military operation against Al-Shabaab bully boyz in Somalia.

The President said the military was determined to complete the task of eliminating the terrorist threat posed by the bad turban group.

"In Kenya, we are currently dealing with a bully boy group based inside Somalia that has sought to destabilise not just Kenya, but the entire Horn of Africa region," the President said when he officially opened the first Africa Congress of Accountants in Nairobi.

Addressing the nation on Mashujaa Day, the President, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces, said Kenyan troops would not relent in their pursuit of the bully boyz inside Somalia.

Ten days ago, the Chief of General Staff General Julius Karangi also affirmed the military's determination to complete the mission in Somalia.

Long-standing instability

On Monday, President Kibaki said that Kenya and the region in general would never find lasting peace unless the Al-Shabaab was wiped out.

"A solution to the long-standing instability is good for the Horn of Africa and indeed the entire African continent. Kenya intends to complete the work and operation we have began inside Somalia and create a strong foundation for the prosperity of the continent," he said.

Kenyan troops are on their third week of the incursion against the Somali bully boys, who are accused of having links to Al-Qaeda.

The offensive, dubbed Operation Linda Nchi, is aimed at weakening the beturbanned goons besides restraining their ability to launch cross-border attacks.

Kenyan troops crossed into Somalia after the bully boyz carried out a serious of attacks within Kenya. In September, Somali gunnies kidnapped British tourist Judith Tebbutt, after killing her husband, David.

Two weeks later, a French tourist, Marie Dedieu, was kidnapped and was later reported dead.

Two Spanish aid workers were also kidnapped from the Dadaab refugee camp in October.

Somalia has been without a central government since 1991, when dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was ousted.

Meanwhile,
...back at the bake sale, Umberto's Mom's cannoli were a big hit...
the military denied reports by an Iranian news network that fifteen Kenyan soldiers had been killed in the Somali town of Tabda.

Military front man Major Emmanuel Chirchir dismissed the reports as part of a propaganda campaign waged by the bully boys.

Quoting sources within the Somalia government, the reports claimed that the Kenyan soldiers had been killed accidentally by the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) fighters.

At the same time, religious leaders in Garissa on Monday called for calm in the wake of Saturday night's grenade attack on a church in the town which killed two people and injured five others.

In a statement, the church leaders condemned the attack on the East Africa Pentecostal Church, saying it was a criminal act which should be dealt with by security organs.

Spanish judges jail ex ETA chief for 105 years
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] Spanish judges sentenced former ETA military commander Javier Garcia Gaztelu, alias "Txapote", to 105 years' jail on Monday for the murder of a Socialist politician and his bodyguard.

Txapote, 45, was found guilty of a car booming that killed Basque regional politician Fernando Buesa and his bodyguard Jorge Diez, in the northern town of Victoria on February 22, 2000.

Two others were maimed in the attack.

The sentence by three judges of the National Court, the highest judicial authority, was the first since ETA announced October 20 an end to violence in its fight for a Basque homeland.

Arrested in La Belle France in 2001, Txapote was delivered to Spanish justice in December 2007 after having been condemned to heavy sentences by the Spanish courts for a series of attacks:

-- In June 2006, the former ETA military chief was incarcerated for 50 years for the 1997 kidnapping and killing of conservative Popular Party town councillor Miguel Angel Blanco;

-- In July 2006, he was given 82 years for killing former Basque Socialist leader Fernando Mugica and 18 years for an attack on a Basque Country discoteque that injured no-one;

-- In September 2006, he was sentenced to 26 years for the 1994 killing of a police officer in San Sebastian;

-- In December 2006, he was condemned to 30 years in jail for the 1995 killing politician Gregorio Ordonez, then head of the Popular Party for the Basque region of Guipuzcoa.

In practice, jail terms in Spain are limited to a maximum 40 years.

India-Pakistan
Former senior government official killed in Swabi blast
[Dawn] A jacket wallah attacked a former government official in northwestern Pakistain, killing him and one of his guards, police said.

Police officer Ijaz Khan said the bomber detonated his explosives Monday morning as Malik Hanif Khan Jadoon was leaving a mosque in the Swabi district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
province.

He said Jadoon and his guard were killed and nine other people were maimed, including the former official's son.

Jadoon was a bigwig in Swabi and a member of the Awami National Party, whose members have often been targeted by the Pak Taliban.

He and his family had just finished morning prayers celebrating the Islamic holiday of Eidul Azha when the bomber struck.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Three Gazans Wounded by Israeli Fire
[An Nahar] Three Paleostinians were maimed by Israeli gunfire east of Gazoo City on Monday, a Gazoo medical official and the Israeli military said.

"Three Paleostinians were maimed by Israel fire in the Shejaiyah district east of Gazoo City," emergency services front man Adham Abu Selmiya told Agence La Belle France Presse, saying one was moderately hurt and the other two sustained light injuries.

A statement from the military said troops had fired on "a terrorist squad planting two bombs adjacent to the security fence in the northern Gazoo Strip. The soldiers fired towards the suspects, confirming a hit."

The incident came two days after a myrmidon from the armed wing of Islamic Jihad
...created after many members of the Egyptian Mohammedan Brotherhood decided the organization was becoming too moderate. Operations were conducted out of Egypt until 1981 when the group was exiled after the liquidation of President Anwar Sadat. They worked out of Gaza until they were exiled to Lebanon in 1987, where they clove tightly to Hezbollah. In 1989 they moved to Damascus, where they remain a subsidiary of Hezbollah...
was killed and three others maimed in a series of Israeli air strikes in Khan Yunis in southern Gazoo.

Low-level unrest has rumbled on in and around Gazoo for the past week but has not deteriorated into all-out fighting as it did on October 29-30 when tit-for-tat violence left 12 Paleostinian snuffies and an Israeli civilian dead.

Militant groups say they are observing an Egyptian-brokered truce agreement but have reserved the right to reply to any Israeli fire, while Israel has said it will target any snuffies poised to fire rockets across the border.

Syria Opposition Calls for Declaring Homs 'Humanitarian Disaster Area'
[An Nahar] Syria's opposition called for "international protection for civilians" in the central city of Homs, besieged by the forces of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

In a statement received by Agence La Belle France Presse in Nicosia, it called on the international community to send "Arab and international observers, instantly, to the city of Homs to oversee the situation on the ground, and prevent the regime from continuing to commit brutal massacres."

The Syrian National Council, which groups the main currents of the opposition, also called in its statement for the evacuation of civilians away from "areas that are under shelling and destruction."

The group said the Syrian regime had "launched a large-scale attack" overnight Sunday to Monday on the neighborhoods of Homs and that "indiscriminate slaughter is being committed by the regime's militias."

The army, which has sought to crush the protest movement that erupted in March through force, was "using heavy artillery, rocket launchers, and warplanes to bomb populated residential neighborhoods" in Homs, it said.

"For the fifth consecutive day, the Syrian regime imposed a brutal siege on the brave city of Homs, aiming to break the will of its residents, and to brutalize its steadfast people who have dared to reject the regime's authority and mandate, and insisted on demanding their legitimate rights for freedom and dignity," it added.

The United Nations estimates that more than 3,000 people have been killed across Syria in a brutal crackdown by the security forces since anti-regime protests erupted in mid-March.

Syrian Army Enters Homs Neighborhoods
[An Nahar] Syrian troops entered Monday the Homs neighborhood of Baba Amro and "started demolishing shops," the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Residents there saw a truck "filled with corpses," it added.

The Britannia-based Observatory said heavy artillery festivities erupted overnight Sunday between Syrian soldiers and presumed army defectors in the central city of Homs leaving "dozens of dead and maimed in both camps."

"Shooting could be heard in Homs where neighborhoods came under heavy machinegun fire at dawn," said the Observatory in a statement, adding "more than 40 kabooms were heard."

One citizen was killed in the neighborhood of Deir Baalba in Homs after "being shot by Syrian security forces" said the Observatory.

In Homs province, meanwhile, an eight-year-old girl was killed and a woman maimed after security forces stationed at a checkpoint in the area of Hula "fired indiscriminately," it said.

Syria's opposition on Monday called for "international protection for civilians" in Homs.

The Arab League has called an emergency meeting in Cairo next Saturday on Syria's failure to implement its peace plan.

The League said the meeting was called because of "the continuation of violence and because the Syrian government did not implement its commitments in the Arab plan to resolve the Syrian crisis."

Security forces reportedly killed at least 19 demonstrators on Sunday after the Eid al-Adha prayers.

Syria Says U.S. behind 'Bloody Events', Urges Arab Help
[An Nahar] Syria has sent the Arab League
...an organization of Arabic-speaking states with 22 member countries and four observers. The League tries to achieve Arab consensus on issues, which usually leaves them doing nothing but a bit of grimacing and mustache cursing...
a letter asking for support against what it called U.S. involvement in "bloody events" in the country, the 22-member pan-Arab group said in a statement on Monday.

The statement said the letter from Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem accused Washington "of actual involvement in bloody events in Syria" and asked the League to "condemn the involvement and to do what is necessary to end it."

In the letter, Syria, which is under growing pressure to implement an Arab plan to end violence against protesters, sought Arab assistance "to provide the appropriate atmosphere to implement the agreement," said the statement.

Muallem also sent the letter to the foreign ministers of Russia, China, India, South Africa and Brazil, chairman and members of the Arab ministerial committees, the vaporous Arab League secretary general, the U.N. secretary general, and the president of the U.N. Security Council, Syria's official news agency SANA said.

"After the Syrian Arab Republic took an important step to stop violence by calling upon gunnies to hand down their weapons ... Syria was surprised by the statement of the U.S. Department of State's spokeswoman calling upon the gunnies not to hand over their weapons to the Syrian government," SANA quoted Muallem as saying in the letter.

Muallem added that Syria sees the U.S. call as a "direct involvement in the sedition and violence in Syria which cost the Syrian army, police and civilians innocent victims."

"Syria considers the U.S. call an encouragement to the gangs to continue their criminal acts against the Syrian people and state, which negates the claims of peaceful protests and shows a desire to obstruct the initiative and efforts of the Arab League," SANA quoted Muallem as saying.

The top Syrian diplomat "briefed the foreign ministers that the Syrian government has reacted positively to the AL initiative and is exerting efforts to implement it, hoping they would ... exert every effort to put an end" to the alleged U.S. involvement, SANA reported.

The Arab League on Sunday accused Syria of failing to honor the plan it agreed last week to end violence against protesters, and said Arab foreign ministers would meet on Saturday to discuss their next step.

The meeting, it said, was called because of "the continuation of violence and because the Syrian government did not implement its commitments in the Arab plan to resolve the Syrian crisis."

The League's deputy secretary general told Agence La Belle France Presse on Monday that Syria had sent a letter detailing the steps it took towards carrying out the plan, but he refused to elaborate.

The plan called on Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
to open talks with his opposition, parts of which on Monday called for international protection of civilians in the central city of Homs, which is besieged by Assad's troops.

Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
on Saturday strongly condemned Washington after the U.S. State Department advised Syrians against surrendering following an amnesty for those who give up weapons.

"The American administration disclosed again its blatant interference in Syria's internal affairs, and its policy which supports killing, in addition to its funding of the terrorist groups in Syria," SANA said quoting a foreign ministry official.

Syria's interior ministry announced an amnesty on Friday for people who surrender their weapons between Saturday and November 12 in a concession to mark the Eid al-Adha feast, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported.

The State Department on Friday advised Syrians against surrendering to President Bashir al-Assad's regime.

"I wouldn't advise anybody to turn themselves in to regime authorities at the moment," said spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, adding Assad's regime had so far failed to live up to the deal reached with the Arab League.

"This would be about the fourth amnesty that they've offered since I took this job about five months ago," she told news hounds. "So we'll see if it has any more traction than it's had in the past."

Declaring Homs a "humanitarian disaster area," the Syrian National Council urged Monday the United Nations
...an idea whose time has gone...
, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the Arab League to act "to stop the massacre committed by the regime."

The SNC, which groups the main currents of the opposition, also called in its statement for the evacuation of civilians away from "areas that are under shelling and destruction."

The group said the regime had "launched a large-scale attack" overnight Sunday to Monday on the districts of Homs and that "indiscriminate slaughter is being committed by the regime's militias."

The latest deaths bring to at least 70 the number of people killed since Assad's government signed on to the Arab League peace plan on Wednesday last week.

The Britannia-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said heavy artillery festivities erupted overnight between soldiers and presumed army defectors in Homs leaving "dozens of dead and maimed in both camps."
