3 peacekeepers killed in Sudan's Darfur
[Bangla Daily Star] Three international peacekeepers were killed and six maimed when their patrol came under attack in Sudan's troubled Darfur region, their force said yesterday.

Unidentified gunnies attacked the peacekeepers late on Monday in a camp for displaced persons south of El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, the UNAMID joint African Union
...a union consisting of 53 African states, most run by dictators of one flavor or another. The only all-African state not in the AU is Morocco. Established in 2002, the AU is the successor to the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was even less successful...
/UN. mission said in a statement.

Mainly non-Arab rebels took up arms against Sudan's government in 2003, accusing it of marginalizing the remote western territory.

Khartoum mobilized troops and mostly-Arab militias to crush the uprising, unleashing a wave of violence that Washington and some activists have called genocide. Khartoum dismisses the accusation.

Egyptian Deputy PM Quits After Cairo Protests
[Voice of America] Egypt's deputy prime minister resigned Tuesday in the wake of violent festivities between security forces and Coptic Christians that left 26 people dead.
You might describe these as "Egyptian versus Arabs" festivities. Sadly, the Egyptians are outnumbered...
State media reports gave no reason for Hazem El-Beblawi's departure. However,
ars longa, vita brevis...
Egyptian news organizations quote a ministerial aide as saying he quit in protest of the handling of Sunday's festivities between security forces and Copts. He also served as finance minister.

The unrest began after more than 1,000 Christians marched to the state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
building in Cairo to protest a recent attack by Islamist gunnies on a Coptic church in the country's south.

Witnesses say demonstrators began fighting with police and soldiers who were guarding the building. They also say security forces in armored vehicles drove into the crowd of protesters crushing some. Some Mohammedans joined the fighting.

More violence erupted on Monday outside a hospital where many of the maimed had been taken for treatment. Also Monday, thousands of people turned out for a mass funeral for the victims.

On Tuesday, Egypt's Coptic Christians began three days of mourning for the protesters killed during the street violence with security forces.

Coptic church leaders urged followers to fast and pray during the mourning period.

Egypt's ruling military council has ordered the government to investigate the violence.

Coptic Christians make up about 10 percent of Egypt's roughly 80 million people. Many complain that Egypt's new leadership has been too lenient on Islamists they blame for a series of anti-Christian attacks since a popular uprising forced the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak
...The former President-for-Life of Egypt, dumped by popular demand in early 2011...
in February.

The Coptic church issued a statement saying the minority community has suffered repeated problems and the perpetrators have gone unpunished.

Libya fighters capture Sirte cop shoppe
[Haaretz] Troops of Libya's interim rulers seized the police headquarters in the centre of Sirte on Tuesday, hometown of runaway leader Muammar Qadaffy
...a proud Arab institution for 42 years...
, following fierce fighting since the early hours of the morning.

The fighters were seen on Arab satellite televisions honking the horns of their vehicles and firing into the air in celebration, after they took control of the police headquarters, where Qadaffy's fighters were positioned.

They also destroyed posters of Qadaffy.

Earlier on Tuesday, troops of Libya's interim rulers fought their way across the coastal town of Sirte, as doctors in the city said medical supplies were running low.

"We gained very strategic positions inside the centre of the city overnight and now we have cornered loyalists of Qadaffy in one area," a military commander inside Sirte was quoted as saying by Dubai-based broadcaster Al Arabiya.

The new government's military also said they also made gains overnight in the inland enclave of Bani Walid, where they say senior members of Qadaffy's regime are still hiding.

Sirte and Bani Walid are the two last bastions where Qadaffy's loyalists are still fighting the country's new rulers.

Doctors in Sirte and Bani Walid described the medical situation as "miserable.'

"The situation is very, very bad, we are only four doctors left inside the hospital and the number of maimed is increasing by the hour," doctor Abdullah Breiga told the BBC Arabic channel from Sirte.

The International Committee of the Red Thingy warned this week of a medical emergency in Sirte.

"There is a lack of medical personnel, no medical equipment, no drugs, no medicines, and there is no electricity inside the hospital," the Red Thingy's Dibeh Fakhr said.

On the other hand, Aden's security jugged armed gangs accused of looting cars at gunpoint, the source said, adding that a number of the looted cars have been returned back to their owners.

Yemenis Stage Fresh Demos to Demand U.N. Action on Saleh
[An Nahar] Tens of thousands of Yemenis marched on the streets of the capital Tuesday, demanding for a second straight day the U.N. Security Council take action against President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
"This is a message to the world, to the powerful nations, and to the Security Council...take Saleh and his regime to court," the protesters chanted from Sanaa's Change Square.

Energised by Yemeni activist Tawakkul Karman's Nobel Peace prize win on Friday, protesters warned Saleh they would not give up until their demands for his departure were met.

"Understand this...we have won the Nobel peace (prize) and we will not rest...we will not rest until the butcher is tried," they chanted.

Calls by the Yemenis for an intervention by the United Nations
...what started out as a a diplomatic initiative, now trying to edge its way into legislative, judicial, and executive areas...
have increased in the lead-up to U.N. Yemen envoy Jamal Benomar's report to the Security Council planned for later Tuesday.

On Monday, a similar protest called on the U.N. to play a stronger role in resolving the months-long political crisis that has pushed Yemen's economy and its leadership to the brink of collapse.

The formal opposition group, the Coalition Forum, has also joined the call for action, saying it would support a more prominent U.N. role in ending the political deadlock that began when widespread anti-government protests erupted in the impoverished country in January.

European nations meanwhile are pressing for a U.N. Security Council resolution demanding Saleh step down.

On Monday, European diplomats in New York told Agence La Belle France Presse they hope to pass a resolution that calls for an immediate end to violence by all parties and for Saleh to sign and implement the Gulf-sponsored initiative for a peaceful transition of power.

They said work on the draft resolution, intended to bolster the faltering Gulf Cooperation Council initiative, would be stepped up after Benomar's briefing to the council.

Yemen defected General alleges that Saleh forged 2006 elections
[Yemen Observer] The defected general Ali Muhsen said Monday that President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower...
forged the presidential elections of 2006 after his rival won.

In the 2006 presidential elections, President-for-Life Saleh
... exemplifying the Arab's propensity to combine brutality with incompetence...
had 78 per cent of the vote while his main rival, the opposition coalition candidate, Faisal Bin Shamlan had 21 per cent of the vote.

The elections was recognized by the opposition and the international community as " reasonably free, fair and competitive".

" At the end of the day of election, I went to president Saleh in his palace, he was very sad, he told me the computer made a mistake," general Muhsen told a group of journalists in his office.

Then , they spent three days to correct that " mistake" and Saleh was announced as the winner and Bin Shamlan the loser.

" Saleh is still alive, Allah Almighty may preserve him and give him long life, you can make sure of what I am saying by asking him," said the general to the journalists who were only demanding him to release their colleague Mohammed Sudam, Reuter's news hound, who was kidnapped by the general's soldiers two days ago. " this is the real story of the 2006 elections, so what constitutional legitimacy he is talking about," the general wonders.

Al-Awlaki Dead Says al-Qaeda in Yemen
[Yemen Post] After having denied that the US born holy man, Anwar al-Awlaki
... Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, al-Awlaki is a dual citizen of the U.S. and Yemen. He is an Islamic holy man who is a trainer for al-Qaeda and its franchises. His sermons were attended by three of the 9/11 hijackers, by Fort Hood murderer Nidal Malik Hussein, and Undieboomer Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. He is the first U.S. citizen ever placed on a CIA target list...
had been killed in a Drone strike led by the Americans in al-Jawf province in Yemen last month, the Islamist group al-Qaeda finally admitting the inevitable, by confirming his death.

Anwar al-Awlaki had been on the US most wanted forces of Evil list for several years, as the Americans saw him as one of the most dangerous al-Qaeda operatives in the World since his knowledge of English and his charisma they say, were attracting more supporters.

This Monday, al-Qaeda posted a statement in its website, saying that indeed al-Awlaki had been killed alongside 3 other hard boyz in an American Arclight airstrike in north Yemen, warning that the deaths would be avenged.

The SITE intelligence group which monitors all myrmidon websites is warning of a recent surge in activities on the internet, adding that forces of Evil are now well versed in the power of this media, using it as not only a propaganda tool but also a way to recruit.

"The blood of the sheik (al-Awlaki) and his brothers will not go in vain; there are heroes behind him who do not sleep under oppression, and they will retaliate soon," the group said. We and the Americans are at war: we get them and they get us, and the end is for those who are patient -- they are the ones who will be victorious."

Security incident forces Chihuahua governor off the road
exclusive from Rantburg
For a map, click here. For a map of Chihuahua state click here.

By Chris Covert

A convoy in Chihuahua, Chihuahua carrying Chihuahua governor Cesar Duarte Jaquez was forced to seek refuge in a shopping mall Monday evening, as unidentified armed suspects fired their weapons nearby, according to Mexican news account.

Mexican news agencies were informed of the incident Tuesday by Duarte Jaquez's communications secretary, Juan Ramon Flores.

Chihuahua city is the capital of Chihuahua state and was where Governor Duarte and Hector Murguia Lardizabal, Juarez's combative mayor, were to meet to hear a speech by Murguia Lardizabal.

Duarte's convoy was near the intersection of avenidas Tecnologico and Ejercito Nacional at about 1900 hrs, heading to the gymnasium at Colegio de Bachilleres when the shooting took place.

Members of Duarte's security moved the convoy to the shopping mall at Tec Galleria, laagered up, then called in security reinforcements, which arrived shortly after, including local and state police agents, and army units. After about 10 minutes the convoy resumed its travel itinerary. It was later determined the shooting was some distance from Duarte's convoy, and that the shooters had been firing in the air.

Governor Duarte came to power in Chihuahua via last year's midterm elections on a platform of cracking down on crime, including stiffening penalties for kidnapping. His crusade to date has been somewhat a personal one: his nephew, Humberto Medina Vela, was shot to death on July 14th, 2010 in a botched kidnapping by a Sinaloa Cartel affiliated group in Chihuahua city.

At the moment the security situation has improved with violent crime down 50 percent, according to Duarte himself. The security situation has improved so much that nearly 75 percent of the Polica Federal detachment has been moved out of Juarez city, albeit after months of haranguing by Murguia Lardizabal that Duarte make the request from the federal government.

The last of the Polica Federals is due to leave left this weekend, as Chihuahua state and Juarez municipal police have taken over patrol duties in Juarez.

Anti-War Leftist Terrorist Organization Plants Bombs On German Railways
German police have discovered another explosive device designed to derail trains in Berlin - the third in two days. Two of the devices were found on Monday - one on a high-speed line and another near Berlin's main station.

The third was discovered on Tuesday on the track of a suburban railway line south of the German capital.

A previously unknown left-wing group, calling itself the Hekla Reception Committee, said it planted the devices. The explosive devices are made of bottles of flammable liquids attached to fuses.

The discovery of the third suspected fire-bomb follows the explosion on Monday of a device on the high-speed line between Hamburg and Berlin, where trains reach speeds of 200km/h. There were no casualties, but rail traffic was disrupted.

Another device was discovered on Monday before it went off at the mouth of a tunnel leading to Berlin's main station. It consisted of seven bottles, filled with flammable liquid, bundled together and linked to a fuse.

The leftist Hekla Reception Committee said in an online statement that it had planted the devices in protest at the presence of German troops in Afghanistan. Police said they were not familiar with Hekla, which is also the name of an Icelandic volcano.

Germany has about 5,000 soldiers deployed in Afghanistan as part of Nato's mission, most of them in the north of the country.

Last November, Berlin's transport system was severely disrupted when signalling cables were set on fire. There have also been arson attacks on a number of expensive cars in the German capital. But these latest attacks on high-speed railway lines take the potential destruction to a new level of danger.

Finnish Police Uncover Two More Suspects Linked to Terror Funding
[An Nahar] A Finnish police probe into terrorist funding and recruitment has uncovered at least two more suspects, police said Tuesday, just over a month after making two arrests in raids in Helsinki.

"Police suspect at least two new people of funding terrorism in addition to the earlier two suspects," the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) said in a statement.

The NBI said one of the new suspects was a Finnish citizen and that both were currently outside the country, although not believed to be fleeing authorities.

On September 7, Finnish police tossed in the clink a man and a woman on suspicion of funding and recruiting for overseas terrorist organizations, while the daily Ilta-Sanomat quoted unidentified police sources saying both were Finnish citizens of Somali origin.

Intelligence officials launched the probe in 2009 after a routine police check caught their attention.

"The case involves many individuals, some of whom are abroad... during the course of the investigation many witnesses have been interviewed and requests for international legal help have been made," the NBI said.

Police added that the woman who was tossed in the clink in September had been freed but was ordered not to leave the country.

Alas, and alarmingly, that means this is a confidential declaration of war straw poll. I expect another meeting very soon with the GOP House leadership.

When all that is done, we'll see the extent of the spine transplant, or even more aggressive drone an "counter-terrorist" activity - only this time crossing into Persian territory. That, or the rapid emergence of several "liberation fronts" within its boundaries.

Rocket Attack on Pakistan Governor Meeting, Six Wounded
[An Nahar] At least six people were maimed but none were killed when rockets struck a meeting of tribal elders convened by a provincial governor in northwest Pakistain Tuesday, bigwigs said.

Senior administration official Sahabzada Anis corrected his earlier statement that one person had been killed when forces of Evil apparently perched on nearby mountains fired rockets on the gathering in Kalaya town of tribal Orakzai district.

He said that six people were maimed, one critically.

Anis added that one rocket hit the gathering before the arrival of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
(KPK) governor Masood Kausar,

A second rocket landed near a helipad and a third fell in surrounding fields, he told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The tribal belt on the Afghan border comprises seven federally administered semi-autonomous districts.

Tariq Hayat, secretary for the security of the districts, said seven people were maimed at the venue. He added that he had no immediate report of fatalities.

A security official said that five rockets had been fired, with most landing far from the gathering, but one falling close by, causing the injuries.

"Militants fired five rockets at the location of the jirga which the governor of KPK was about to address," a security official said.

"There have been no deaths so far and the governor is safe," he said.

IHC stays hanging of Qadri
[Dawn] A court on Tuesday suspended a policeman's death sentence pending his appeal against conviction for killing a provincial governor.
Anybody here surprised? Nah, me neither.
The Islamabad High Court held a preliminary hearing to admit the appeal filed last week by lawyers for Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, who was working as one of Punjab governor Salman Taseer's bodyguards when he shot him dead.

"The high court suspended the implementation of the death sentence awarded by the anti-terrorism court until the appeal hearing concludes," said defence lawyer Shuja-ur-Rehman.

The court's two-judge panel will now fix a date for the next hearing, he added.

Qadri has confessed to killing Taseer in a hail of bullets outside an upmarket coffee shop in Islamabad on January 4.

Qadri was convicted of murder and sentenced to death by an anti-terror court on October 1 but the verdict led to an outcry by his supporters.

Rehman said the court had rejected a verbal request by the defence lawyers for the appeal to be heard in open session for security reasons.

The anti-terror trial of Qadri was also held behind closed doors, at the high-security Adiyala prison outside Islamabad.

Meanwhile,
...back at the argument, Jane reached into her purse for her .38...
hundreds of demonstrators have rallied in support of Qadri.

Tuesday's rally took place as Qadri appealed his death sentence before a high court.

Police claims new developments in Shabaz Taseer case
[Dawn] The city police has once again claimed important developments in the kidnapping case of Shahbaz Taseer, the son of slain former Punjab governor Salman Taseer, DawnNews reported.

According to informed sources, the Joint Investigation Team (JIT), comprising police and other security agencies, was considering all possible angles in probing the case.

The JIT had so far gathered valuable information regarding the case from the four set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock suspects who allegedly helped the kidnappers, sources added.

CCPO Lahore Malik Ahmed Raza had confirmed those arrests but refused to share information with the media.

Raza said that the JIT was also considering Taseer family feuds and the death sentence given to Mumtaz Qadri who had killed the former governor.

Syrian security forces kill 4 in Homs
[Emirates 24/7] An activist group says Syrian security forces have killed four people in the restive central city of Homs.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says security forces also jugged dozens of people in Homs, which has been the scene of mass protests since an uprising against President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad's

regime began in mid-March.

Syria's state-run news agency
...and if you can't believe the state-run news agency who can you believe?...
Sana said Tuesday that authorities jugged 144 wanted people and confiscated large amounts of ammunition and assault rifles in Homs.

The uprising against Assad began amid a wave of anti-government protests in the Arab world that toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

Assad has reacted with deadly force that the U.N. estimates has left nearly 3,000 people dead.

Syrian Rockets Land on Hnaider Home, Security Sources Deny
[An Nahar] The house of a Lebanese villager in the northern town of Hnaider was hit by two rockets that came from the Syrian side of the border in the area of Wadi Khaled, Voice of Leb radio station (93.3) reported Tuesday.

VDL said that the rockets hit the home of Khaled al-Assaad on Monday night but did not cause any casualties.

However,
facts are stubborn; statistics are more pliable...
security sources later denied to VDL (100.5) that the Syrian army had shelled the village, saying the residents of Hnaider and al-Knaisseh spent a calm night.

As Safir daily quoted Hnaider residents as saying that Syrian soldiers deployed on the other side of the border opened machine gunfire and launched two rockets on their town.

They said the incident is part of a plan to terrorize the residents in Wadi Khaled and villages of Jabal Akroum under the excuse of carrying out anti-smuggling operations or pursuing Syrian army dissidents.

The residents again appealed for help from Lebanese security agencies and the army. They said the armed forces should either protect them or urge the Syrian military for an end to its operations.

#1  Fred I love that "Dithering". Dick Cheney put that word on the map. I believe the caution is fear of unrest spilling over into their respective countries. Even when they have change things go downhill fast. Wealth will be attacked. Starting with symbols. In Germany they went for the cars. Here they go to the homes of the wealthy and Wall Street. They are not builders. They are the takers. When the dust settles they will go back to their old ways. Wasted, mindless efforts. The old riots destroyed their own communities in this country and will in the Arab world. Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and Libya. Perhaps the Saudi or even Turkey next.

[An Nahar] Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri
Second son of Rafik Hariri, the Leb PM who was assassinated in 2005. He has was prime minister in his own right from 2009 through early 2011. He was born in Riyadh to an Iraqi mother and graduated from Georgetown University. He managed his father's business interests in Riyadh until his father's liquidation. Former MP Bassem al-Sabaa told al-Mustaqbal

He is keen on supporting the Arab spring uprisings, especially for the Syrian people to attain "freedom and democracy," the daily said.

Hariri urged al-Mustaqbal leadership to focus on these three main points during the upcoming stage.

The newspaper noted that Hariri, who is currently in Riyadh, will travel to Gay Paree on Wednesday or in the coming days, to meet with Lebanese officials.

They are expected to discuss the developments in the region and the overviews of the forthcoming stage in Leb.

EU backs Syrian opposition, ponders new sanctions
[Emirates 24/7] The European Union

, whose crackdown on pro-democracy protesters has so far killed nearly 3,000 people.

Diplomats said Syria's opposition needs more work to become an effective political force and gain formal recognition as a legal representative of the Syrian people. Still, some drew comparisons to European backing of Libya's National Transitional Council, the rebel-led group that overthrew strongman Muammar Qadaffy
...Custodian of Wheelus AFB for 42 long years...
"I believe we have to get to know them better and get to know their intentions," French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said of the Syrians after the 27 EU foreign ministers met in Luxembourg and discussed the worsening situation in the Arab nation.

Earlier in the day, Syrian opposition members, including representatives of the newly formed Syrian National Council, said they had agreed on a democratic framework for a future nation and that they want international observers to be allowed into the Arab state to examine the situation there.

Ghied Al Hashmy, a political scientist who participated in a conference in Sweden of Syrian opposition members, including council representatives, said they oppose military intervention but want more political pressure on Syria, such as the targeted economic sanctions the EU has been applying.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the bloc is planning to expand action against Syria. A third round of measures will be necessary, she said, especially after Assad's "disappointing" speech over the weekend in which he criticized alleged foreign intervention in the country.

An official said last week that Syria's largest commercial bank will be targeted in any new sanctions. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject.

The uprising against Assad began in mid-March amid a wave of anti-government protests in the Arab world that toppled autocrats in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya. Assad has reacted with deadly force that the U.N. estimates has left some 2,900 people dead.

The Syrian National Council is a broad-based group which includes most major opposition factions.
