Afghanistan
NATO says 25 Taliban killed in attacks on US bases
NATO said that at least 25 insurgents were killed during the largest coordinated insurgent attack on military bases in the eastern Afghan province of Paktika since 2009.

The attacks targeted US-led troops near the border with Pakistan on Friday as Afghanistan and the United States marked the 10th anniversary of the US bombing campaign that forced the Taliban from power in late 2001.

A spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said one soldier was lightly wounded when a car bomb exploded about 300 metres from the outer wall of Combat Outpost Margah. Air strikes and gunfire killed at least 25 insurgents during the attacks in the Gormal, Sarobi and Barmal districts of Paktika.

Africa North
Fighting Rages in 'Final Assault' on Sirte
[An Nahar] Sirte was rocked by deadly street fighting on Friday in what troops from the new regime said was the final assault on Moammar Qadaffy's
...whose instability has been an inspiration to dictators everywhere...
besieged hometown, with orders that they take it "today."

Medics said at least four regime fighters had been killed and dozens more maimed from fighting on the west side of the city, and an Agence La Belle France Presse correspondent said ambulances continued to arrive in a steady stream at a nearby field hospital.

There were no immediate casualty figures from the eastern side of the Mediterranean city.

Earlier, medics at another field hospital, 50 kilometers west of Sirte, said 18 injured anti-Qadaffy fighters had been brought in, most of them with shrapnel wounds.

Street fighting and heavy bombardment was continuing from overnight at the Ouagadougou conference center, a major stronghold of pro-Qadaffy forces, on the western edge of the city.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing up from several points in city, amid the sound of machine-gun fire and kabooms.

NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
planes flew overhead, but there were no reports of air strikes.

National Transitional Council fighter Barak Abu Hajar told AFP he had been in action earlier at the Ouagadougou center and had brought out a maimed comrade.

"They're shooting from everywhere. RPGs and lots of bullets. We were told this was the final assault. Inshallah (God willing) we will take Sirte today."

Fighter Faisal Asker said, "We entered the Ouagadougou center compound but fell back because of RPG and sniper fire. There's no cover there."

"We have orders to finish the mission today."

At the field hospital, just a couple of kilometers away, the AFP news hound said ambulances with wailing sirens were arriving every couple of minutes.

A man with loud hailer, joined by others, shouted "holy shit! Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) every time a patient was stretchered inside the derelict building housing the hospital.

A white minivan arrived and a crowd gathered round in prayer.

Inside there were four bodies wrapped in grey blankets, tied with white tape and a large white sticker giving their names.

Another AFP correspondent said there were particularly violent festivities around and inside the university, near the city center, and in the Mauritanian Quarter.

Fighting on Sirte's northeastern front erupted Thursday morning after Qadaffy diehards advanced under the cover of darkness.

By midday, NTC fighters had halted the pro-Qadaffy assault and were advancing on foot among the buildings, in the face of rocket and sniper fire.

Thursday night, the Ali Nuri Sbag Brigade advanced nearly a kilometer, bringing them close to the north-south thoroughfare that forms a pro-Qadaffy stronghold, the correspondent said.

Sirte and Bani Walid, a desert town 170 kilometers southeast of of Tripoli, are Qadaffy's last major bastions against the NTC, which has ruled most of the oil-rich country since the veteran strongman was toppled in August.

As the fighting raged Thursday night, the runaway Qadaffy called "on the Libyan people, men and women, to go out into the squares and the streets and in all the cities in their millions" to reject the NTC.

"I say to them, do not fear anyone. You are the people, you belong to this land," he said in a scratchy audio message broadcast on Syria-based Arrai television.

"Make your voice heard against NATO's collaborators," he said, in reference to the new regime.

Meanwhile,
...back at the the conspirators' cleverly concealed hideout the long-awaited message arrived. They quickly got to work with their decoder rings...
NTC reinforcements were sent Thursday to Bani Walid for another assault of Qadaffy's loyalists who are fiercely defending the oasis town.

Mussa Ali Yunes, commander of the Jado Brigade, said "we are heading for the southern front of Bani Walid," speaking of a column of 1,000 men and hundreds of vehicles.

Yunes said efforts were being made to convince the remaining 10 percent of the population still there to leave before the new assault is launched after a month-long siege.

"The offensive could, possibly, be launched in two days, but that depends" on the situation, he added, explaining that the NTC forces were outgunned.

"There are many weapons in Bani Walid, weapons of high technology, very recent, coming from Russia," he said. "We need more precise weapons but also intelligence on the inside, particularly on the number of missiles they have.

"About 2,000 fighters are deployed on the northern front, but they only have light weapons for now, because all the heavy weapons are in Sirte."

Yunes said Qadaffy son "Seif al-Islam is in Bani Walid and possibly Qadaffy as well, but there is a 50 percent doubt about that. There are many Qadaffy loyalists in Bani Walid, more than in Sirte."

On Tuesday, an NTC commander said Seif al-Islam was leading the final stand inside the besieged oasis.

#4  Time to REALLY lend them a hand, and do some major propaganda good for the United States. The US should ARCLIGHT Bani Walid with a dozen or so aircraft in a WWII-type "strategic bombing" strike. It would only take ONE, and the rest of the Muddled East will finally understand that we've been fighting with our hands in boxing gloves. They will also understand that eventually those gloves are going to come off, and the number of survivors around anywhere we strike will be able to be counted on the thumbs of one hand, with digits to spare. It would also send a very clear message to a$$hats like Assad that he lives at our indulgence, and our patience is running low. Of course all of this is predicated on the man in the White House actually being WILLING to send such a message. One of my many faults with GWBush was that he wasn't willing.

Bahraini Shia protester shot dead
[Dawn] Bahraini security forces have rubbed out a 16-year-old Shia protester in a demonstration in western Manama, the Al-Wefaq opposition group said on Friday.

Ahmed Jaber al-Qatan was hit Thursday night by bird shot used by anti-riot police in the Sunni-ruled kingdom where the Shia majority led protests that were quashed in mid-March.

"The martyrdom of young Jaber falls under the systematic oppression of those demanding democracy in Bahrain," said the largest Iranian catspaw.

Thousands of mourners took part on Friday afternoon in the funeral of Qatan in the Shia village of Shakurah, west of Manama, according to footage posted online by Al-Wefaq.

On Friday, the interior ministry confirmed the death, saying the youth died of a cardiac arrest.

"Doctors were unable to resuscitate the young man and attributed the cause of death to cardiac arrest," it said.

The public prosecution ordered the body transferred to Salmaniya Medical Complex for his appointment with Doctor Quincy and full investigation.

Another ministry statement later said the coroner of the public prosecution found that the youth had died after being hit by a bird shot, in contrast to the doctors' report.

The ministry acknowledged police fired tear gas and sound grenades at around 20 youths who had blocked the road in Abu Saiba district on Thursday evening, set fire to garbage bins and attacked security forces when they intervened.

"When police arrived on the scene, they were attacked with Molotov cocktails and rocks. Police responded with tear gas and sound grenades to disperse the crowd," it said.

Bahraini security forces quelled a month-long protest in mid-March, driving demonstrators out of Manama's Pearl Square, the focal point of protests inspired by the Arab Spring.

Authorities cracked down on Shia villages, placed in long-term storage hundreds, and scores were dismissed from their jobs.

Hundreds are being tried by a special security court, and dozens more have received lengthy jail sentence, while at least five were sentenced to death.

Despite the crackdown, Shia protesters were soon back on the street, holding regular demonstrations in their villages, and clashing with security forces.

Authorities say 24 people; including four coppers were killed in the month-long unrest.

#3  I would start with a few EOD experts, to convince the Iranians on the street that the movement against the government is huge and powerful.

For instance, a squad of men launching an attack in a city at night can look huge, if at the same time there is a power outage, and several large buildings suddenly burst into flames.

7 Jamaat, Shibir men held from procession
[Bangla Daily Star] Police yesterday picked up seven Jamaat-Shibir activists from a procession at the capital's Moghbazar and showed them placed in durance vile in a case filed for torching and smashing vehicles at Bijaynagar on September 19.

The placed in durance vile are Jamaat-e-Islami members Ahmed Salam, 26 and Gazi Saud, 18, and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir's

Tareque Hasan, 25, Abu Hanif, 20, Mohammad Abdullah Al-Baki, 18 Mohammad Mahati Arafat Shibli, 19, and Redwan Huq, 20.

Police dispersed the procession as it reached near Century Arcade shopping mall around 10:00am and placed in durance vile the seven, said Assistant Sub-inspector Azizul Islam of Ramna Police Station.

The Jamaat-Shibir men were chanting slogans demanding release of their top leaders jugged on war crimes charges, said Officer-in-Charge Rafiqul Islam of the cop shoppe.

Police were preparing to produce the arrestees before a Dhaka Court today in connection with September 19 events, he added.

On September 19, several hundred Jamaat activists joined by Shibir members fought pitched battles with police at Bijaynagar after law enforcers obstructed their rally, leaving at least 100 injured and halting traffic for hours.

During the festivities, they set fire to at least 28 vehicles, smashed around 200 others and vandalised dozens of roadside shops.

In a blurb, Jamaat yesterday evening condemned the arrest and said police held the seven without any reason after a "peaceful programme" of the party.

It demanded the authorities free all of its jugged leaders and activists immediately.

Three Mexican Federal agents were killed and another four were wounded in a shootout between Policia Federal (PF) forces and armed suspects in an area in far northeastern Nuevo Leon Friday, according to Mexican news accounts.

A total of 18 federal agents were on patrol on board four pickup truck when they came under small arms fire near the village of San Carlos near Vallecillos, which is about 20 kilometers northeast of Sabinas Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon.

The ambush sparked a vehicle pursuit which ended when the PF unit came into contact with another, much larger criminal group with as many as 40 armed suspects hiding in an abandoned villa being used as a camp.

A presumed exchange of gunfire took place. Three PF agents were killed while another four were wounded and evacuated by helicopter. A subsequent deployment of 200 PF troops and a search of the area failed to turn up the attackers.

In the camp, security forces found seven stolen vehicles, hundreds of radios, Mexican Marine uniforms, cartridge loaders, packages of drugs, some grenades and, a rocket and rocket launcher.

Violence in Veracruz state, an east coast state, has been ramping up since late last summer, possibly due to increased Sinaloa cartel activity in conjunction with the Gulf Cartel. Pakistani accused in US of spy links is titzup
[Dawn] A doctor charged in the United States with working for Pakistain's spy agency to influence American politicians on their policy toward the disputed Kashmire region has pegged out in Islamabad after suffering a stroke.

Dr Zaheer Ahmed was one of two people accused in the case, which has complicated strained relations between Pakistain and the United States.

Hospital front man Azmatullah Qureshi said Ahmed died Friday after a stroke on September 28.

US prosecutors accused Ahmed of recruiting people to act as straw donors who would give money to a pro-Kashmire group in Washington that really was coming from the Pak government.

Ahmed was not nabbed in Pakistain and never commented on the allegations. He had dual US and Pak citizenship.
Yet another argument against the concept...

Policeman gunned down in southern Thailand
A policeman was killed in a drive-by shooting in Narathiwat province on Saturday. Sgt Jiraphan Leeyanond, 26, was driving his motorcycle about 11:45 a.m. when a gunman on another motorcycle opened fire on him with an AK47 assault rifle. Sgt Jiraphan was shot four times in the back and fell off of his bike. The attackers followed to shoot him one more time in his head and then fled. He died on the spot.

A police spokesman blamed separatist terrorists militants.

Deputy school chief dies after shooting

The female deputy director of a school in Narathiwat province has been gunned down and her husband injured in a drive-by shooting by suspected terrorists rebels.

Waroon Tong-iad, deputy director of Romklao High School, was driving a car with her husband, Sakul Tong-iad, sitting next to her on Thursday when they were followed by two men on a motorcycle. The pillion rider fired about a dozen shots through the window on the driver's side before fleeing.

The couple were taken to the hospital, where Waroon was pronounced dead. She received five gunshot wounds to the body and neck. Mr Sakul, the director of the school where his slain wife worked, was hit in the shoulder and is being treated.

Waroon was the 148th member of the teaching profession to be killed in southern Thailand since January 2004, said Boonsom Tongsriprai, a teacher's representative in the far South.

The chairman of the Confederation of Teachers of the Three Southern Border Provinces said more teachers and school staff had been killed this year by terrorists militants than ever before, especially over the past three months when three teachers have been killed and one injured.

Teachers and school leaders yesterday met provincial governors and security officers to discuss the killing and increase security.

Sanguan Intarak, chairman of the Confederation of Teachers in Narathiwat, said a rumor has been circulating that the rebels would continue to attack teachers. Several teachers have reported being followed by groups of teenagers behaving suspiciously whenever they walked or drove around. They believe the youngsters are spying on them, and collecting information for possible attacks.

Iran: Air defenses can detect & shoot down unauthorized UAV's
TEHRAN – The commander of the Khatam-ol-Anbiya Air Defense Base said on Saturday that Iranian air defense units have been equipped with advanced radar systems capable of detecting unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). In addition, he said previous radar systems have also been upgraded.

In response to the news that Israel has planned to use UAVs against the Islamic Republic, Esmaeili said, “The Zionist regime talks utter nonsense.”

How many hundreds of UAVs can Iran handle at the same time? Inquiring minds want to know.

#2  It seems to be a good idea to have some target drones that both have a big radar signature, and a hull made of advanced materials making it pretty impervious to typical ground attack. And extra maneuverable.

And where it goes, HARMs follow. So their radars light up light an Xmas tree, and their SAMs plink it relatively harmlessly. And then all their radars are blown to smithereens.

Top Kurd Killed, U.S. Accuses Syria of Escalation
[An Nahar] A top Kurdish activist and nine other people were killed Friday as thousands rallied in support of a new opposition front, activists said, as Washington accused Syria of escalating attacks on dissidents.

The latest violence came as Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
One of the last of the old-fashioned hereditary iron-fisted fascist dictators. Before going into the family business Pencilneck was an eye doctor...
will have to leave power if he fails to implement reforms acceptable to the opposition, and Damascus
...The City of Jasmin is the oldest continuously-inhabited city in the world. It has not always been inhabited by the same set of fascisti...
again blamed "terrorists" for the unrest.

Kurdish activist and opposition front man Meshaal Temmo, 53, was killed when four masked gunnies stormed his house in Qamishli in the north and opened fire, also wounding his son and another fellow activist in the Kurdish Future Party, activists said.

Assad's regime is escalating its tactics against the opposition with bold, daylight attacks on its leaders, the US State Department charged.

"This is a clear escalation of regime tactics," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told news hounds, referring to reports of Temmo's murder, as well as the beating on Friday of former MP Riad Seif.

Nuland said both opposition leaders were attacked in broad daylight.

"We've obviously had a number of opposition folks set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock. We have had reports of torture, beatings, etc, but not on the streets in broad daylight," she added. The tactic is "clearly designed to intimidate others."

The official SANA news agency reported Temmo's "liquidation" but gave a different account of his death, saying he was killed "by gunnies in a black car who fired at his car."

Temmo, a member of the newly formed Syrian National Council (SNC) opposition grouping, had been released recently after three and a half years in prison.

SNC spokeswoman Basma Kodmani said the regime had "crossed a new stage in the strategy of repression. All opposition leaders must protect themselves."

Elsewhere, four civilians, including two elderly men, were rubbed out in the central city of Homs by security forces and four others on the outskirts of Damascus, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

A 10th man died after being shot by security forces in the flashpoint northern town of Jisr al-Shughur near the Turkish border, the Local Coordination Committees activist network reported.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pound, Zebulon finally found just the friend he'd been looking for...
ex-MP Seif had to be given hospital treatment after being beaten outside a mosque in the capital's commercial neighborhood of Medan.

Mosques in Syria, as happens every week, again became springboards for Friday anti-regime protests, also this time in support of the SNC, formed to represent the main opposition groups, activists said.

Pro-democracy activists had called for fresh demonstrations under the banner: "The Syrian National Council is our representative, mine, yours and that of all Syrians."

Demonstrators in the restive Damascus district of Barzeh carried slogans affirming their "complete support" for the SNC, YouTube videos showed, while protesters in Homs chanted "the people want the fall of the president."

In Daraa, southern Syria, thousands trampled on giant Russian and Chinese flags, in a sign of discontent at the two U.N. Security Council members blocking a resolution calling for "targeted measures" against Assad.

In the face of international condemnation, Syria's deputy foreign minister said more than 1,100 people have been killed by "terrorists" in the revolt that has shaken the country since March.

"Syria is grappling with terrorist threats," Faysal Mekdad said in a speech to the 47-state U.N. Human Rights Council.

The U.N. Committee on the Rights of the Child, meanwhile, said at least 187 children were among the estimated total of more than 2,900 people killed since Syria launched its brutal crackdown on dissent.

On the diplomatic front, Russia's Medvedev unexpectedly piled pressure on Damascus, just days after Moscow and Beijing vetoed the U.N. resolution.

"If the Syrian leadership is unable to undertake these reforms, it will have to go. But this is something that has to be decided not by NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. It's headquartered in Belgium. That sez it all....
or individual European countries but by the people and leadership ofSyria," he said.

Russia on Friday said the office of one of its energy companies was attacked in Syria by opposition forces it claimed were increasingly resorting to "terror" tactics.

The foreign ministry said the Stroytransgaz Company's office in Homs came under gunfire on Wednesday. It reported no injuries but said security at all Russian facilities in Syria has been stepped up.

In wielding its veto on Tuesday, Russia said it feared the U.N. draft could be used for military action against Syria. Russia, China and others still accuse NATO of abusing U.N. resolutions on Libya to launch air strikes this year.

[An Nahar] A number of Lebanese citizens living in the North demanded the Lebanese and Arab governments Friday to withdraw their ambassadors from Damascus

in a protest against the repression of demonstrations which had started in the Middle of last March.

According to National News Agency, a number of people from the North took part in a march in Tripoli "in solidarity with the Syrian people at an invitation from the Secular Gathering in Leb amidst strict security measures taken by the army and internal security forces."

Protesters raised banners denouncing the Russian and Chinese positions in the U.N. Security Council, and demanded the international community to "issue a resolution condemning the Syrian regime", assuring that "the conflict in Syria is against the system and not between minorities and majorities."

Syrian Deputy FM Says 1,100 Killed by 'Terrorists'

with a list of more than 1,100 people it says have been killed by "terrorists" in ongoing unrest in the country, its deputy foreign minister said Friday.

"Syria is grappling with terrorist threats," Faysal Mekdad said in a speech to the 47-state U.N. Human Rights Council at it reviewed the situation in Syria.

"In the next few days we will give the High Commission for Human Rights a list of deaders.....civil servants, police.....more than 1,100 people who have been killed by the terrorists," he said.

"My country has suffered numerous threats of war over the last seven months: media war, disinformation, lies of all kinds and deception."

The U.N. announced on Thursday that more than 2,900 people have been killed in Syria's crackdown on anti-regime protests since March 15.

Syrians Rally in Mass Support for Opposition Front
[An Nahar] Syrians rallied in their thousands after weekly prayers on Friday, pledging support to a newly-formed opposition front and calling for an end to President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad's

regime, activists said.

Mosques across Syria, as is the case every week, again became springboards Friday for protests against the regime and also this time in support of the Syrian National Council, formed in Istanbul last weekend to represent the main currents standing against the Assad regime, activists said.

Pro-democracy activists had called for fresh demonstrations under the banner: "The Syrian National Council is our representative, mine, yours and that of all Syrians."

Protesters in Idlib province, where security forces massed in numbers and in the northern city of Amuda rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud in support of the newly created opposition body.

neighborhood of Qabun, which was rocked by shootings the previous week, said the Local Coordination Committees (LCC), an activist network opposed to the regime.

Security forces and paramilitary forces locally known as the "shabiha" surrounded mosques in the suburbs of the capital, in the central city of Homs and in the Mediterranean cities of Banias and Latakia, activists said.

In Homs city, security forces opened fire against protesters, injuring at least one, while kabooms rocked three different neighborhoods, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Analysts warn that the unrest in Syria, which began in mid-March as peaceful protests against Assad's autocratic rule, is becoming increasingly armed in response to the relentless gunning down of protesters by security forces.

An army officer who has taken refuge in Turkey, Colonel Riad al-Asaad, claims to have established an opposition armed force called the "Syrian Free Army", but its strength and numbers are unknown.

Syrian troops on Thursday pursued armed defectors near the border with Turkey, sparking festivities in which 12 people died, and crossed into Leb to gun down a Syrian national, activists and an official said.

Four people died in similar festivities earlier in the week between Syrian troops and deserters -- who had defected after refusing to fire on anti-regime protesters -- also near the Turkish border, rights activists said.

The Observatory and the Local Coordination Committees said soldiers and security forces backed by tanks had raided the villages in Idlib province.

The festivities with the defectors took place after troops on Thursday stormed villages west of Jabal al-Zawiya, near the Turkish border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Fears that the violence linked to the anti-regime revolt is spilling across the borders were heightened on Thursday when Syrian troops reportedly killed a Syrian living in a remote border area of Leb's eastern Bekaa region.

"At around 2:30 pm (11:30 GMT), in an area called Saaba, next to Aarsal, Syrian troops entered Lebanese territory and opened fire on farmer Ali al-Khatib, a Syrian national," a Lebanese official told Agence La Belle France Presse, requesting anonymity.

A government official, also speaking on condition of anonymity

, confirmed the incident and said it was unclear why Khatib was targeted or how he was killed.

The United Nations

said it now estimated the crackdown had killed more than 2,900 people since mid-March but warned that the figure could rise to take into account those reported missing.

Eight Killed in Syria as Medvedev Tells Assad to Reform or Leave
[An Nahar] Eight Syrians were rubbed out on Friday as thousands of people rallied against the regime of President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad

and in support of a newly formed opposition front, activists said.

The fresh surge of violence came as Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Assad will have to give up power if he fails to implement reforms acceptable to the opposition, and the Syrian regime again blamed "terrorists" for the unrest.

"Four people were killed in the neighborhood of Sabaa" in the central city of Homs, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.

Two elderly men were among the dead in Homs, where security forces shot up thousands of protesters streaming out of mosques after traditional Friday prayers, wounding at least 25 people, the Britannia-based Observatory added.

Three other people died from gunshot wounds in the protest hub of Douma near Damascus

, where "snipers" shot at civilians, it said.

Mosques across Syria, as is the case every week, again became springboards on Friday for protests against the regime and also this time in support of the Syrian National Council, formed in Istanbul last weekend to represent the main currents standing against the Assad regime, activists said.

Security forces and paramilitary forces locally known as the "shabiha" surrounded mosques in the suburbs of the capital, in Homs and in the Mediterranean cities of Banias and Latakia, activists said.

The deputy foreign minister of Syria, which has yet to comment on the formation of the SNC, said in Geneva Friday more than 1,100 people have been killed by "terrorists" in the revolt that has shaken the country since March.

"Syria is grappling with terrorist threats," Faisal Mokdad said in a speech to the 47-state U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva as it reviewed the situation in Syria.

"In the next few days we will give the High Commissioner for Human Rights a list of deaders... civil servants, police... more than 1,100 people who have been killed by the terrorists," he said.

Russia's Medvedev unexpectedly piled pressure on Damascus, just days after Moscow joined China in vetoing a U.N. resolution calling for "targeted measures" if Assad pursues his brutal clampdown on dissent.

"If the Syrian leadership is unable to undertake these reforms, it will have to go. But this is something that has to be decided not by NATO
...the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. A cautionary tale of cost-benefit analysis....
or individual European countries but by the people and leadership of Syria," ITAR-TASS quoted Medvedev as saying.

In using its veto on Tuesday, Russia said it feared the resolution could be used for military action against Syria.

Russia, China and others still accuse NATO of abusing U.N. resolutions on Libya to launch air strikes this year.

#1  Assad had better do what Medvedev says, because Syria is full of retired KGB and FSB who are more than able to tap him.
