#5  Ms. Nesbit, artists' model and chorus girl, was at the heart of what was known at the time as the Crime of the Century. Her abusive husband, Pittsburgh millionaire Harry Thaw, murdered 52-year-old architect and socialite Stanford White (of the firm McKim, Mead, and White), who had taken advantage of 16-year old Evelyn and subsequently become her lover a couple of years before she married Thaw. Harry Thaw's mother quickly financed propaganda, even a film, to portray her son as a protector of women's virtue; at the same time, the media reported the very-married White's many other transgressions involving young women. After his first trial ended in a hung jury, Thaw was retried in 1908 and found insane. He was sent away to a mental institution for the criminally insane in upstate New York, from which he which he escaped once; in 1915 he was released with reputation untarnished--a homicidal hero.
Family:
Her father, Winfield Scott Nesbit, was a lawyer who died when Evelyn was eight, leaving the family destitute and plagued by debt for years until her modeling jobs got them back on their feet.

NYC relocating migrant tent city to Randall's Island
[NYPOST] The Big Apple will relocate — and downsize — its first tent city for migrants colonists from the Bronx to Randall’s Island due to flooding issues, according to City Hall.

The city has ditched the already-under construction site on Orchard Beach that would have housed 1,000 migrants colonists and will instead erect tents to accompany half that number on Randall’s Island, Mayor Adams said in a Monday night statement.

The move was prompted by flooding at the Bronx site following this weekend’s rain storms. The cost of flood mitigation efforts would be more expensive than the cost of relocation, a City Hall spokesperson told The Post.

"New York City Emergency Management determined that ... relocating the Orchard Beach humanitarian relief center to Randall’s Island is the most efficient and effective path forward, and work is underway to make this move," Adams said in a statement. "This new location is less prone to flooding, is closer to public transportation, and will provide temporary respite to 500 asylum seekers."

The initial capacity for 500 adults can be increased, the mayor’s office said.

Afghanistan
Daily Evacuation Brief October 5, 2022
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • RESISTANCE IN BADAKHSHAN ABANDONS DISTRICT – Possibly facing a significant force imbalance, NRF forces in the Shikai District of the province conducted a tactical withdrawal into the mountains and reputedly took several Taliban leaders as prisoners of war with them. All ammunition, weapons, communications equipment, and other supplies were commandeered and taken up into the mountains as well. The Ministry of the Interior has strenuously denied that the District fell to the Resistance but recent troop movements and the undeniable proof have circulated widely on social media. A source with the Resistance claimed the NRF never intended to liberate the District and was only interested in capturing some Taliban leadership to draw Taliban forces away from Panjshir. Some sniping has been reported across the Province by Taliban units and there is a fear the Resistance may have left multiple booby-traps in the towns and villages under their brief occupation. It is unclear what the Taliban’s response will be but Kabul believes the Resistance enjoys significant support among locals in the Province which could foretell of possible retaliation against non-combatants as the Taliban moves back into populated areas.

  • A FOURTH EXPLOSION IN KABUL – An explosion attributed to a roadside bomb was triggered in Police District 2 early on Tuesday morning. No casualties were reported from the blast and a Taliban police official remarked the bomb was in a place that would not have caused much destruction had people been present. He called the perpetrators ‘amateurs’. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack but non-combatants in Kabul remain on edge over the sustained bombing campaign. Fewer people have been noticed taking public transit and some additional security has been observed at schools and Mosques.

  • FAMILY OF MISSING AFGHAN-AMERICAN CITIZEN CLAIMS HE IS IN TALIBAN CUSTODY – Mahmood Shah Habibi, a Chief of Aviation under the former regime has been missing for over two months. He had traveled back to Afghanistan under the amnesty program and had been working in the communications sector. He was reputedly taken from his home on 10 August and eyewitnesses claim that Taliban security forces had picked him up. His family has asked repeatedly about his whereabouts and is convinced the Taliban are holding him. A source within the Ministry of the Interior claims he is being held under suspicion of planting listening devices for Western intelligence agencies.

CONFLICT TRACKER
No confirmed reports of conflict in the past 24 hours.

NEXT 24 HOURS
TALIBAN SECURITY IN KABUL INCREASED – Perhaps in response to the deteriorating situation, several sources across two ministries have reported that security has been increased in most Police Districts across the city. The Shiite neighborhoods in Western Kabul and Tajik neighborhoods in Northern Kabul seem to be the exceptions. A source with the Ministry of the Interior claimed they are having difficulty manning these sectors as the security forces believe they will be killed or injured if they stay at their posts. The source went on to say that intelligence agents will infiltrate Mosque worshippers over the next month for Friday prayers in an attempt to interdict potential suicide bombers. This activity is scheduled to begin this coming Friday.

U.S citizen missing in Afghanistan, family claims he is in Taliban custody
[KhaamaPress] An Afghan-American national who had travelled to Afghanistan for working purpose has gone missing in Kabul for over 8 weeks now, a family member said.

Mahmood Shah Habibi, the former Afghan Aviation Authority Chief who had recently travelled to Afghanistan is missing since August 10, Ahmad Shah, Habibi’s brother told Khaama Press.

"He has been working as an advisor with a telecom company in Shash-Darak of Kabul for the last 3 years and he did not have any issues being in Afghanistan after the fall of the country in the hands of Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
", Ahmad Shah said.

He used to travel between Afghanistan and the United States in the last 12 months without any problem, but the last time he travelled in August was detained by the Taliban’s forces from his home in Shairpur, Habibi’s brother said.

"Not only Habibi, but 29 other employees of the same company were also arrested on the same day, many of whom were later released", Ahmad Shah said.

We tried to reach out to the Taliban’s Ministry of Interior and also to the Intelligence Directorate to find out why he has been detained and when will he be released, but they did not provide us any answer, Ahmad Shah added.

According to Habibi’s brother, the incident has been reported to the U.S Department of State to seek the U.S government’s help for his release.

"The U.S Department of State has promised to get in touch with the Taliban and negotiate with them on Habibi’s release, but we have not received any further update from the U.S government yet", Ahmad Shah said.

A U.S Department of State official speaking to Khaama Press confirmed that they are aware of US citizens being detained in Afghanistan and said they urge US citizens not travel to to Afghanistan as the risk of violence and kidnapping against the U.S citizens are high in Afghanistan.

The U.S government source communicating with Khaama Press did not provide further details on Habibi’s case saying they would not comment due to privacy considerations.

A close source to the Taliban’s administration who does not want to be named in Khaama Press report confirmed that on August 10, the Intelligence Department arrested Mahmood Shah Habibi, the Afghanistan’s former Aviation Authority Chief with several other employees of Asia Consultancy Group (ACG), an Afghan-American company that works in the telecom sector.

The case in the connection of which Mr. Habibi and his colleagues have been arrested is relatively very serious, the source told Khaama Press, but did not provide further details.

This comes as several other former Afghan officials who had returned back to Afghanistan following the statement published by the Taliban’s administration about the safe return of former officials and tribal leaders, many of those whom had returned have reportedly left the country again.

Salam Rahimi, Chief of Staff for the former Afghan President, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani
...former chancellor of Kabul University, ex-president of Afghanistan. Before returning to Afghanistan in 2002 he was a scholar of political science and anthropology. He worked at the World Bank working on international development assistance. As Finance Minister of Afghanistan between July 2002 and December 2004, he led Afghanistan's attempted economic recovery until the Karzais stole all the money. When Biden abandoned the country left with a helicopter, four cars, and part of the national treasury...
returned to Kabul few months ago and was warmly welcomed by the Taliban’s Foreign Minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi. A source close the the Taliban in the condition of anynomity told Khaama Press that Salam Rahimi had to flee again through Iran’s route after spending nearly two weeks in prison.

Ethiopian troops cross over to Somalia in pursuit of Al-Shabaab
[Garowe] Columns of Æthiopian soldiers crossed over to Somalia, eyewitnesses have confirmed, at the latest move which could boost security cooperation between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa, given the recent deal that President Hassan Sheikh signed with PM Abiy Ahmed.

According to eyewitnesses, the soldiers, whose number could not be independently ascertained, crossed over from Æthiopia's Somali region to Somalia through Dolow town in the troubled Gedo region within the Jubaland state of the federal republic of Somalia.

The soldiers, donning Æthiopian army garments, are believed to be pursuing al-Shabaab

snuffies within the vicinity of the border according to multiple sources. The move comes a few days after the Æthiopian troops flushed al-Shabaab snuffies from strategic towns in the Somali region.

Devastating was the al-Shabaab raid in Æthiopia that the Somali regional forces had to ask for reinforcement from the national army. Æthiopia's senior army officers confirmed that over 200 al-Shabaab snuffies were killed in Æthiopia after they crossed over.

Some sources also confirmed that to neutralize al-Shabaab, the national army of Æthiopia installed a buffer zone deep into Somalia, a move which could explain the latest movement of troops along the Æthiopia-Somalia border. It's not clear if Somalia is aware of the incident.

Insiders in Æthiopia's army said the move was aimed at degrading al-Shabaab, with fears that the snuffies have trained many Æthiopians to cause instability in the country. Æthiopia is also facing challenges in the Tigray region and there are concerns that al-Shabaab could take advantage.

This comes a day after Somalia president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and PM Abiy Ahmed agreed to a "united front against al-Shabaab, their common enemy". President Hassan Sheikh has been categorical that his administration will ensure the snuffies are completely deflated.

Æthiopia is also a major security stakeholder in Somalia having deployed over 4,000 soldiers who are serving in the African Union

Transition Mission in Somalia. The soldiers have been helping to defeat the snuffies mainly in the Southwest and Jubaland states of Somalia.

The peaceful takeover came after al-Shabaab fighters made a surprise retreat from their bases in the locality, allowing the allied forces to move in and capture it.

The troops dug defensive positions in and outside the area to avert a possible counter-attack from al-Shabaab, according to the local residents who spoke to Radio Shabelle.

Hiran region witnessed a massive military operation by SNA with the support of local militia and AU troops who are battling jointly to drive out al-Shabaab from the remaining areas.

Ali Jeite, the region’s governor took the lead in the offensive and was joined by members of the Somali national assembly and other officials.

Lebanese suspect held as Liberia seizes $100 million of cocaine
[An Nahar] Liberian authorities have said that they have seized some $100 million worth of cocaine, with help from the United States' international narcotics agency.

Liberian Justice Minister Musa Dean told news hounds the national Drug Enforcement Agency, with help from the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, had made the seizure Saturday in Topoe village, a western suburb of the capital Monrovia.

The operation led "to the seizure of $100 million worth of pure cocaine," he said.
"We seized $100 $37 $4 million a couple ounces for personal use, sir"
A Guinea-Bissau national and a Lebanese suspect were arrested, he added.

The drug agency could not confirm reports shared on social media that the drug had been stored in frozen fish containers. It said the investigation was ongoing.

Drug enforcement agency chief Marcus Zehyoue said "a full-scale investigation" was underway along with a search for accomplices who escaped capture.

The U.S. embassy in Liberia congratulated the Liberian authorities on the drug haul, saying in a statement that it was the result of swift joint action.

"The success of this operation is the direct result of excellent communication between law enforcement agencies around the world, including Brazil, the United States, and Liberia, among others," it added.

Peruvian drug kingpin Leandro ''El Patrón'' Norero, dead again
[CUENCAHIGHLIFE] One of Ecuador’s highest profile prisoners died Monday in a riot at the Cotopaxi penitentiary in Latatcunga. Deputy Director of Prisons Jorge Flores confirmed the death of convicted drug trafficker Leandro ‘El Patrón’ Norero. In addition to Norero, at least 14 other prisoners were killed in the riot.

On Peru’s “most wanted” list for seven years, Norero was declared dead in 2020 when his lawyers convinced police and prosecutors that he had died, providing a death certificate and photos to prove it. Norero was wanted for drug trafficking and money laundering, suspected of having close ties with two Mexican cartels

After his death was officially recorded in Peru, Norero relocated to Ecuador and continued his criminal activities.

In 2022, the 35-year-old Norero was arrested by National Police when a raid turned up $6 million in cash and gold bars in his house in Guayaquil. His identity was confirmed, as well as the fact that he was alive, and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

According to Flores, Norero’s death was at the center of the riot. “We do not know how events developed, and we are continuing our investigation, but we believe that his [Norero] murder was the primary factor.”

He added that Norero, through his drug sales, was the financier of three criminal gangs in Ecuador: Los Lobos, Los Tiguerones and Los Chone Killers. “These gangs were at war with the Choneros gang and it appears this conflict was the spark for the riot,” Flores said.

Flores refused to comment on claims by National Assemblyman Fernando Villavicencio that Norero was financing several political leaders, including members of the National Assembly. Using cell phone records, Villavicencio said he can prove that payouts to politicians were being delivered on Norero’s orders. On Monday night, Villavicencio turned over his evidence to prosecutors.

Flores said a “disturbance” began about 1:30 p.m. and developed quickly into a full-blown riot. “We sent in National Police very early but the uprising was out of control by that point,” he said. “As of 7 p.m., the situation was under control and the competing parties have been separated.”

At 10 p.m. Monday, prison officials say they had confirmed 15 deaths, including Norero’s, as well as seven serious injuries. “Some of the dead suffered stab wounds while others suffered gunshots,” the prison said in a statement.

According to Flores, investigators were interviewing prison guards to determine how firearms and ammunition were smuggled into the prison. “Three guards were arrested September 20 for attempting to deliver 500 rounds of ammunition to prisoners and we are looking into a connection with the riot.”

Albanian mafia battles Mexican drug cartels in Guayaquil, recruits boys as young as 10 as hitmen
[CUENCAHIGHLIFE] When Dashi Ergys was shot to death in an upscale Guayaquil restaurant in January, the media provided little information about him other than that he was Albanian. Despite the fact that he appeared to be specially targeted, many people assumed he was a tourist who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It was more than a month later that a National Police commander revealed in comments during a radio interview that Ergys was under investigation for drug trafficking and that he was probably part of an Albanian mafia operating in Guayaquil, Manta and Esmeraldas, involved in shipping illegal drugs to Europe.

According to Colombian criminologist Rafael Santos, Ergys’ murder and the revelation that the Albanian mafia is operating in Ecuador is only part of a much bigger picture. “There is a great deal of background to the story that is mostly unknown to the public,” he says. “First, there is a turf war underway between the Mexican cartels and the criminal gangs they control, and the Albanians. A large percentage of the murders in Guayaquil and Manta are a result of the conflict.”

J-6 Victim Victoria White Describes Unbelievable Bare-Fisted Beating by DC Police on Jan 6th
[THEGATEWAYPUNDIT] Victoria White from Rochester, Minnesota attended the Stop the Steal rally in Washington DC on January 6th. Like many Americans that day it was her first time she ever visited Washington DC. She was excited to attend the rally and stand with President Trump at the Ellipse.

What started as a wonderful trip with family and friends turned into a bloody nightmare. Victoria White was nearly killed by DC police officers during the rally. The police officers beat her in the face and shoulders nearly 40 times with sticks and their fists. Then they dragged her through the US Capitol shoeless and forced her to wait outside without a phone, a coat, or a ride after they released her hours later.

This was after Victoria broke up Antifa activists breaking windows at the US Capitol.

To add insult to injury, the FBI later raided her home and arrested her in Minnesota.

According to previous statements by attorney Joseph McBride:

She is hit approximately thirty- five times over the course of 4 minutes and 30 seconds, while appearing to be begging for mercy the entire time. She is hit with the baton while facing away. She is hit with the baton while facing forward. She is speared and poked with the baton about the face so as to inflict maximum pain. She collapses more than once and is stood up by the officers only to be maced and beaten again. At some point, White-shirt puts away his baton, not because he is showing mercy because he has a clear avenue to her face. As such, he unloads on the defenseless woman punching her five times in five seconds, directly in the face, with all of his might.

Not once in the DOJ report do they describe the brutal pummeling she received at the hands of the Capitol Police officers.

The fact that they ignored the police brutality in their report is absolutely frightening.

It should be clear to any conservative in America today that you cannot trust the Department of Justice.

The fake news mainstream media has also refused to report on this brutal police beating in any of their reporting.

After the police officers beat Victoria with batons for several minutes and smashed her in the face with their fists, they put her in zip-tie handcuffs and paraded her through the US Capitol and into a police vehicle.

I'll have to think about that. I rarely post. However, other than a couple of brief absences, I have been here daily since close to the beginning. There is something remarkably unvarying about Rantburg--a genuine testament to Fred and the crew. This feels like the one good hotel in a perennially war torn locale. The lights are always on, the drinks are cold and the management fully attentive. If you seek to discern the true state of affairs, this is the spot to convene. That part is unvarying. #10  I suggest we evolve a lexicon and vernacular that says the opposite of what it means.

Like, Wakandan?

Funny that, coming from the poster whose tough talk routinely indulges a love of extrajudicial violence by the authorities

#12  And please don't say use your voice at the ballot box, that clearly doesn't work anymore.

#13  Dron has been a critic of J6ers as well as many other burgers. To them I ask, what will it take for you to act? Please don’t answer “I type my opinion into the computers”.

And yeah, attitudes have changed since 9/11. Losing many of my freedoms and rights had something to do with that. Been here since close to the beginning too.

#14  Yessir! Fight them at the ballot box!

Fight them on their Chinese servers:

Election Tech Company ‘Konnech’ CEO Eugene Yu, 51, was arrested Tuesday in Michigan after Los Angeles County prosecutors alleged he stored the personal information of hundreds of county election workers on servers in China.

The county awarded Yu’s firm, Konnech, a contract in 2020 to store information pertaining to the employee payroll and scheduling data on the guarantee that he would store all information within the U.S., according to a statement shared by LA County. Michigan is expected to extradite him to Los Angeles in the coming days, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“Konnech allegedly violated its contract by storing critical information that the workers provided on servers in China,” Los Angeles district attorney George Gascon said, per the LA Times. “We intend to hold all those responsible for this breach accountable.” While Gascon noted that none of the information appeared to have been sold, any data stored in China can be provided to Chinese intelligence and security agencies at their demand.

Prosecutors will not say how they became aware of the breach, only that is was revealed as part of a “separate investigation,” the LA Times noted. A statement shared by True The Vote suggested that Yu’s arrest was based on alleged evidence “of the very activities he and his organization attempted to suppress,” in a suit the CEO had filed against the organization, suggesting that the organization played a “small role” in the “complex investigation.”

True The Vote reportedly stated that members of the not-for-profit were able to download the personal information of 1.8 million poll workers, held on Konnech servers in China, information that was subsequently handed to the FBI, according to The Post Millennial.

Konnech did not immediately return The Daily Caller’s request for comment or statement on Yu’s arrest. He has previously denied any wrongdoing, according to the New York Times.

#15  Chris, one possibly stolen election and you are willing to give up on the vote entirely?

I think they pulled all stops to get Biden in office in a very unique situation that will be very hard to pull off a second time. Especially at the scale necessary now.

What? I don't know how you read that. The only criticism it got from me was for not being the horrendously violent thing it was made out to be. Half measures won't get anywhere. Two words, American Spring. That it bust. It doesn't matter if you win on the ballot or not. The LSDs have to be ...

Pakistan Army kills 7 terrorists in separate KP operations
[Dawn] The Pakistain Army killed seven Death Eaters in two different operations in parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa on Tuesday, according to the military’s media wing.

A blurb from the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that in the first incident, Death Eaters fired on a military convoy in the general area of Hassan Khel.

"Troops initiated a prompt response, effectively engaged and killed three terrorists," the ISPR said, adding that the men had "remained actively involved in terrorist activities against security forces" and weapons and ammunitions were also recovered from them.

The ISPR said that during the intense exchange of fire, Lance Naik Muhammad Pannah, 30, resident of Jaffarabad District, and the Frontier Constabulary’s Sepoy Shamas Ullah, 36, resident of South Wazoo District, "fought gallantly and embraced martyrdom".

It added that the area was being sanitised to eliminate any other Death Eaters found nearby.

In the second incident, the ISPR said soldiers killed four Death Eaters in an exchange of fire in Tank’s general area.

The ISPR said security troops had observed the terrorists’ movement and subsequently engaged them in combat.

It added that the holy warriors were involved in murder, kidnapping, and extortion in the area, and weapons and ammunition were recovered from them.

The security situation has further aggravated as the highest number of terror incidents in a single month this year was recorded in September, according to an Islamabad-based independent think-tank, Pakistain Institute for Conflict and Security Studies.

The number of terror attacks increased in September compared to August 2022. The month witnessed 42 Death Eater attacks (the highest in a month in 2022) with an increase of 35 per cent compared to August. A visible increase of 106pc in violence in erstwhile Fata and KP was also observed.

In the wake of cleanup operations by security forces, 17 alleged holy warriors were killed and 18 others apprehended across the country.

Women's rights activist from Turkey shot dead in center of Sulaimani

with ideological ties to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) was shot multiple times and killed on Tuesday in the center of Sulaimani city, raising alarm amongst the Kurdish community from Turkey about the increasing number of such liquidations.

Nagihan Akarsel, member of the Jineoloji research academy - which seeks to empower women in northern and eastern Syria - was rubbed out by person or persons unknown in front of her house in Sulaimani’s Bakhtiyari, reported PKK-affiliated Firat news agency (ANF).

Sulaimani police spokesperson Sarkawt Ahmad told Rudaw’s Rawchi Hassan that Akarsel’s body has been transferred to Sulaimani’s forensics department and an investigation into the incident has been initiated.

Akrasel was born in Turkey’s Konya and has been living in Sulaimani for the past few years, laying the down the foundation of Jineology, which translates to women’s studies. She was also the editor-in-chief of the organization’s magazine, ANF added.

Sulaimani's internal security forces (Asayish) announced the arrest of a number of suspects for Akarsel's death late Tuesday.

An unidentified drone targeted a vehicle carrying suspected PKK members near the town of Mawat in Sulaimani province on Tuesday afternoon.

Shaho Othman, mayor of Chwarta, told Rudaw’s Horvan Rafaat that "a PKK member was injured inside the car."

At least two other liquidations targeting individuals reportedly linked to the PKK were killed in the Kurdistan Region earlier this year.

Zaki Chalabi, head of the Mesopotamia Workers Organization, was killed in May when person or persons unknown on a cycle of violence shot up a restaurant he owned.

Suhail Khurshid, a cadre of the PKK-affiliated Freedom Movement, was rubbed out by unknown assailants in front of his house in Kifri late August. The Freedom Movement told Rudaw that Khurshid "was killed by Turkey."

Turkey has not released any statement regarding the latest incident though it rarely makes comments.

The PKK is an armed Kurdish group fighting for the increased rights of Kurds in Turkey and named a terrorist organization by Ankara. Ottoman Turkish forces regularly pursue the PKK, as well as individuals believed to be affiliated to the group, through the use of drones, Arclight airstrike

Four banks stormed by depositors across Lebanon
[An Nahar] Four Lebanese banks were stormed Tuesday by depositors, a day after a man stormed BLOM Bank’s branch in Haret Hreik.

In the northern city of Tripoli
...a confusing city, one end of which is located in Lebanon and the other end of which is the capital of Libya. Its chief distinction is being mentioned in the Marine Hymn...
, employees and workers of the Kadisha Electricity Company stormed a branch of the FNB bank in protest at the bank’s deduction of fees from their salaries.

Al-Jadeed TV said the employees threatened escalation unless their salaries are paid in full, as a Lebanese Army force intervened and staged patrols in the vicinity of the bank.

An Internal Security Forces retiree identified as Ali al-Saheli meanwhile stormed BLC bank in Chtaura, demanding to take his $24,502 deposit. Saheli was later arrested by security forces after a bank employee managed to seize the weapon from him.

"Count the money, before one of you dies," Saheli said in a video he recorded with one hand while waving a gun in the other. Employees struggled to calm him down, as protesters from the depositors group and bystanders watched from outside.

A depositors association said Saheli had repeatedly asked the bank to transfer $4,300 to his son who is studying in Ukraine, after he was expelled from his university and residence due to his failure to pay tuition and rent.

Saheli had also undergone medical checkups to determine if he could sell a kidney in order to secure the needed money, the association added.

The depositor Ali Hassan Hodroj meanwhile stormed Byblos Bank in the southern city of Tyre, demanding that he take his $44,000 deposit. The bank later agreed with Hodroj to give him a sum of LBP 352 million.

"The head of the Depositors Association, Hassan Mughniyeh, has entered into Bank Byblos in Tyre to receive the deposit from the depositor Ali Hassan Hodroj after the end of the negotiations," al-Jadeed reported, adding that Hodroj will later turn himself in to security forces.

Formerly inhabited by hardy Phoenecian traders, its official language is now Arabic, with the usual unpleasant side effects. The Leb civil war, between 1975 and 1990, lasted a little over 145 years and produced 120,000 fatalities. The average length of a ceasefire was measured in seconds. The Lebs maintain a precarious sectarian balance among Shiites, Sunnis, and about a dozeen flavors of Christians. It is the home of Hezbollah, which periodically starts a war with the Zionist Entity, gets Beirut pounded to rubble, and then declares victory and has a parade. The Lebs have the curious habit of periodically murdering their heads of state or prime ministers...
branch demanding some of his locked savings. The branch staff shuttered its doors while Siam continued to negotiate with management. al-Jadeed TV reported that Siam was holding a "peaceful sit-in" inside the bank.

Some depositors' protest groups, including the Depositors' Outcry, have supported the break-ins and vowed to continue doing so.

"We're sending a message to the banks that their security measures won't stop the depositors, because these depositors are all struggling," Depositors' Outcry media coordinator Moussa Agassi told The News Agency that Dare Not be Named. "We're trying to tell the bank owners to try to find a solution, and beefing up security measures isn't going to keep them safe."

The general public have commended the angry depositors, some even hailing them as heroes, most notably Sally Hafez, who stormed a Beirut bank branch with a fake pistol and gasoline canister to take some $13,000 to fund her 23 year-old sister's cancer treatment.

The banks, however, have condemned the heists, and urged the Lebanese government to provide security personnel.

The Association of Banks in Lebanon in late September shuttered for one week after at least seven depositors stormed into branches and forcefully took their trapped savings that month, citing security concerns. The banks last week partially reopened a handful of branches, only welcoming commercial clients with appointments into their premises.
