#5  Awkchewallee, she was a rather interesting person who genuinely loved old-weird Hearst (after starting out as a gold-digger, by her own admission). She was also a stutterer, of all things -- which couldn't have helped when the talkies arrived.

#6  First time I visited Hearst Castle in San Simeon, CA I thought it was gonna be boring. But it was actually pretty interesting. Went back four times. Old Man Hearst's wife preferred to stay back East and would never join him there. That was kinda like an open invitation to Marion Davies.

Eyewitnesses said the allied forces launched Thursday a search and door-to-door security operations in the city, searching Al shabab remnants hiding out the villages.

"We saw Somali and Kenyan soldiers shooting five young men suspected to be or have links with Al shabab as they were carrying pistols," a residents who asked to hide his identity for fear of reprisal told Shabelle Media by phone.

No government official in the city was available to reach for comments on the killing.

Addressing journalists at a presser held in Mogadishu on Thursday, the AMISOM front man said they have managed successfully to detain a number of youths alleged to have carried out in the past wave of deadly bombings and hit and run attacks in Mogadishu.

"Mogadishu security is improving slowly and life is returning to normal. AMOSOM and Somali forces are launching joint military operations to restore the overall city's security and protect those want to destabilize Mogadishu," he said.

Answering a question which Shabelle asked him about the whereabouts of the Kenyan soldier that 'massacred innocent Somali civilians' in Jana-abdala last September, he said: " he was fired from the army by a military tribunal that has also sentenced the soldier in jail terms."

Despite Threats, U.S. Cut Security in Libya Before Attacks
Even as American outposts in Benghazi appeared to be at risk, the State Department trimmed the number of security guards on the ground. Eli Lake reports on the latest allegations.
Can Obama throw Hillary under the bus?
In the six months leading up to the assault on the United States consulate in Benghazi, the State Department reduced the number of trained Americans guarding U.S. facilities in Libya, according to a leading House Republican investigating the Sept. 11 anniversary attacks. The reduction in U.S. security personnel increased America’s reliance on local Libyan guards for the protection of its diplomats.

This is the latest charge from Rep. Jason Chaffetz, the Utah Republican leading a House investigation on the Benghazi attacks, regarding alleged security defects in Benghazi. Chaffetz said the information comes from whistleblowers who have approached the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform.

The State Department on Wednesday didn’t respond to requests for comment.
"Hokay, Boss, what do we say now?"
"Nuttin!"
However, a senior State Department official said an independent review panel was examining the charge.
That's total nonsense. You don't need an independent review panel. You need to find and ask the person who signed the order.
This official said it was routine to reduce the number of U.S. personnel serving in new diplomatic posts such as Benghazi over time. When the U.S. established its official presence in Benghazi in 2011, it was the middle of a war, and even routine jobs such as drivers were handled by U.S. personnel, this official said.
Except it was still unsafe in Libya in 2012...
The allegation from Chaffetz, who is the chairman of the oversight committee’s subcommittee that handles national security, is important in light of recent reports that some Libyans who provided security for U.S. missions were working with insurgents and, in one case, allegedly attacked the consulate in Benghazi in April with a homemade explosive.

On Tuesday, Chaffetz and the oversight committee’s chairman, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), disclosed in a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton details of an alleged April 6 bombing at the consulate. The letter detailed how in the run-up to the 9-11 assault there was an escalation of military-style attacks on Western targets in Libya’s second-largest city. The letter also said U.S. security personnel had requested, and were denied, additional security for the U.S. embassy in Tripoli and the consulate in Benghazi.

Chaffetz went further Wednesday, saying in an interview that the number of American diplomatic security officers serving in Libya had been reduced in the six months prior to the attacks. "The fully trained Americans who can deal with a volatile situation were reduced in the six months leading up to the attacks," he said. "When you combine that with the lack of commitment to fortifying the physical facilities, you see a pattern.”
Our ambassador was a sacrificial lamb to Champ and Hilde. He was, oh what's term, 'expendable'...
The oversight committee’s investigation is looking at whether there was adequate security for Ambassador Chris Stevens, who was killed in the attacks that day. It’s one of the many questions about the Benghazi attacks that are beginning to circle around the White House, and especially Secretary of State Clinton, as she completes her tenure.

On Tuesday, Clinton wrote in a letter to Chaffetz and Issa that she intended to cooperate with the House committee’s investigation. But in the letter she did not promise to turn over all of the cables and documents requested by Chaffetz, saying she had empowered her own accountability review board to find out what had happened in Benghazi. “Nobody will hold this department more accountable than we hold ourselves,” she wrote.
How on earth did her lips stay on?
The senior State Department official told The Daily Beast that on 9-11 there were five Americans serving as diplomatic security to protect Ambassador Stevens at the consulate. But this official stressed that a group of former Navy SEALs and others with military training who were stationed less than half a mile away at a nearby annex factored into the security plan for the consulate. This official referred to this team as a “quick reaction force,” but also acknowledged that their job was not to provide protection for the ambassador.

David Tafuri, a partner at Patton Boggs law firm in Washington and a counsel to the Libyan government, said there was a “tension between the need to allow America’s diplomats to engage with Libyans free from restrictive security controls and the need to protect the diplomats in a dynamic environment.”

Tafuri added, “From September 2011 to September 2012, Libya generally got safer.
Define 'generally'...
We had an excellent diplomat in Chris Stevens, who in order to do his job needed to be able to be on the street meeting with Libyans.”

#3  seems like they could have chosen some place for the embassy that had restricted access and was physically stronger. it's not clear how much this bad choice was due to Stevens and how much due to the State Dept. Cutting back on US guards and expanding Libyan staff was a bad call.

#4  I think the overall situation came from a need to forget they were even in Libya. Remember Obama said there would be no troops on the ground in Libya, just helping with "logistics". That, plus the overwhelming urge to forget the clusterfark it represented via Jihadi's lead to dereliction of duty. Before the election comes around look for a high-seated State Department official to throw themselves under the bus to protect Hillary and Champ.

FBI visits site of attack in Libya
(CNN) -- Three weeks after four Americans were killed in an attack on the U.S. Consulate in eastern Libya, an FBI investigative team arrived at the site, a U.S. official said Thursday.

"You should not assume that all we could do or have been doing is restricted solely to Benghazi," Attorney General Eric Inaction Jackson Holder told news hounds in Washington. "There are a variety of other places in country and outside the country where relevant things could be done and have been done. This is a matter that's been under active investigation almost since the time of the incident and I'm satisfied with the progress that we have made."

He said the focus of the Justice Department was "to solve this matter, to hold people accountable. So that's what we will do."

A senior administration official told CNN the team arrived late Wednesday and worked through Thursday.

Arabia
U.S. Adds Jihadist Yemeni Group to Terror List
[An Nahar] The U.S. State Department on Thursday added the Yemeni Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia
...a Yemeni Islamist militia which claims it is not part of al-Qaeda, even though it works about the same and for the same ends...
(AAS) to its list of terror organizations, saying it is an offshoot of Al-Qaeda in the Arabian peninsula (AQAP).

"AAS is simply AQAP's effort to rebrand itself, with the aim of manipulating people to join AQAP's terrorist cause," the State Department said in a statement.

"The actions taken today against AAS support the U.S. effort to degrade the capabilities of its parent organization, AQAP," the statement read.

"We are determined to eliminate AQAP's ability to execute violent attacks and to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat their networks," it added.

Inclusion on the terror list means that Americans face "a prohibition against knowingly providing material support or resources to, or engaging in transactions with, Ansar al-Sharia," the statement said.

It added that any property or assets held by the group in the United States are subject to seizure.

The U.S. statement said that AAS has taken responsibility for multiple attacks against Yemeni forces, including a May 2012 suicide kaboom that killed more than 100 Yemeni soldiers.

U.S. officials also blamed the group for a March 2012 series of attacks and armed assaults that killed 100 people in southern Yemen.

Yemeni Agents Arrest Activists, Say Visiting Jews 'Against Law'
[Yemen Post] The intelligence system in Yemen tossed in the slammer
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
on Wednesday a four-member activist team after it visited houses of Yemeni Jews in the capital Sanaa, Almasdar Online reported.

The website quoted Fuad Al-Alawi, one of the members of the team, as saying that agents from the intelligence system intercepted and tossed in the slammer
Drop the gat, Rocky, or you're a dead 'un!
them on charges of entering the houses of the Jews in the Residential City near the US embassy.

"The agents told us that entering the Jewish houses was against the law," he was quoted as saying by telephone.

"We visited the Jews to discuss with them if they want to participate in Yemen's comprehensive national dialogue conference that should include all factions in the country," Fuad told the website.

The dialogue will be held in early November under the West-backed power-transfer deal that was reached after the 2011 turmoil.

"Our visit was aimed at having an idea if the Jews want to participate in the dialogue because they are Yemenis regardless their religion", Al-Alawi explained.
What? Don't be absurd! If Allah had wanted them to be citizens, he would have made them Sunnis.
Many Jewish families have left the country in the past few years, some secretly to the US and Israel.
It seems that the Yemenis have forgotten Operation Magic Carpet in 1949-50, when the brand new country of Israel secretly airlifted 45,000 of Yemen's 48,000 Jews to the Promised Land, and only remember the most recent rescues.
The remaining families, not many, were transferred from Saada and other far north provinces to the capital after they had been harassed.
And now they can be harassed in Sanaa, for that is their purpose in Dar al Islam.

A total of 11 individuals were killed in several shootouts and executions Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday in Zacatecas state, including a shootout between elements of a Mexican Army road patrol and armed suspects, according to Mexican news accounts.

According to a news item posted on the website of El Sol de Zacatecas news daily, a Mexican Army patrol encountered armed suspects in Jerez municipality near the village of Encino Mocho Thursday evening.

The armed suspects were reportedly members of the Gulf Cartel (CDG), and had fired on the army unit. Army return fire killed five and critically wounded one armed suspect. Four soldiers were hurt in the encounter from the pursuit, which presumably ended with the firefight.

A week ago, a Mexican Naval Infantry unit encountered armed suspects in Enrique Estrada municipality, about 20 kilometers due east of Jerez municipality.

Six unidentified individuals were murdered or were found dead in ongoing drug and gang related violence in Zacatecas state last Wednesday and Sunday,
according to several items which appeared in the web edition of El Sol de Zacatecas.
  • Three individuals were shot to death in a shooting at a drinking establishment in Zacatecas municipality last Sunday. According to the news item, armed suspects dismounted a Nissan Sentra sedan at about 2100 hrs at Meolodramas on Avenida Francisco García Salinas in Lomas del Campestre colony, and fired their weapons inside the establishment before fleeing the scene. The owner, identified as Leonardo Rojas Mora, and two employees died at the scene.

  • A man was found shot to death in Sombrerete municipality near the village of Benito Juarez Wednesday morning. The victim was identified as Rolando Gonzalez Aldaba. The report said the victim had been tortured and shot, and probably had a nexus to organized crime.

  • A Mexican Army unit found two unidentified bodies in Villanueva municipality near the village of San Juan Wednesday. The victims had been tortured and shot.

Mexican security forces reinforce Coahuila in wake of shooting

An undisclosed number of Mexican federal security troops have been deployed to northern Coahuila state in the wake of the shooting of the son of former Coahuila governor Humberto Moreira Valdes, Wednesday night, according to Mexican news accounts.

According to a news report posted on the BorderlandBeat.com website, Jose Eduardo Moreira Rodriquez, 28, was found shot to death near the village of Santa Eulalia, near the border city of Ciudad Acuna Wednesday night. Moreira Rodriquez was apparently engaged in work for the poor as regional coordinator of social programs for the Department of State Development. He is also the nephew of Coahuila state governor Ruben Moreira Valdes.

Ciudad Acuna, which is less than 40 kilometers from Piedras Negras, has been the scene of a number of shootings and security incidents, which like Piedras Negras stem from a prison break in Piedras Negras September 17th.

Until the murder of Moreira Rodriquez, Mexican federal response to the numerous shootings in the area has been tepid. Much of Mexico's security in the state is concentrated in the east in support of Operacion Noreste, which is itself centered in Tamaulipas state and Seguro Laguna, which is centered in La Laguna, where Torreon, Coahuila and Gomez Palacio, Durango form a sort of twin city metropoitan area.

According to various tweets and news stories, including an item posted on the website of Vangardia news daily, Mexican naval infantry and Policia Federal troops arrived in the airport at Plan de Guaralupe in Ramos Arizpe municipality, near Saltillo, the state capital of Coahuila state. Other tweets have said that other federal investigatory units, characterized as elite, have been spotted in Ciudad Acuna barely 24 hours after the murder of Moreira Rodriquez.

Mexican Army and Naval Infantry troops, originally spotted at the Government palace in Saltillo, where security meetings were held including military officials, were later seen heading north towards Ciudad Acuna and Piedras Negras, according to Twitter accounts. Saltillo is also the location for the headquarters for the Mexican 6th Military Zone.

High level military officials attending included Admiral Jose Santiago Alvarez Valdes, Chief of the General Staff of the Mexican Navy, General Alcazar Noah Sandoval, commander of the Ninth Military Region. and General Dagoberto Espinosa Rodríguez, commander of the 6th Military Zone.

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
Ex-cop killed along with terrorists in Dagestan
One of four alleged Islamic terrorists militants killed by law enforcers in Dagestan on Thursday was a former police officer who already quit the insurgency once.

Sidik Aliyev and three others were shot down by return fire when they attacked police officers who stopped their Mercedes SUV for a check. Aliyev had a track record of supplying the terrorists militants with food and weapons and providing them with transportation. He surrendered to authorities in 2006 and received a pardon, but continued to support the Islamist terrorists rebels in the North Caucasus republic.

Police identified another dead terrorist militant as Kazimagomed Shibayev, an arms dealer who was providing terrorists rebels with firearms since the early 1990s for which he served a two-year prison term.

Officers found plenty of weapons in the SUV, including an automatic rifle, a rocket launcher, a handgun, several grenades, 700 bullets and explosives worth three kilograms of TNT.

Fake Military Documents, Weapons Found in Abandoned Pickup
Something-American appears to have had false papers side business in Dallas, Texas. News video at link.
[NBC] A dry cleaner and former member of the U.S. military has been placed in durance vile
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
after suspicious documents and weapons were found in his crashed pickup truck early Tuesday.

At about 5 a.m. Tuesday, a delivery driver spotted a crashed Chevrolet Silverado behind the Mayflower Place shopping center along state Highway 26 near Precinct Line. The driver notified the Hurst Police Department, who soon arrived to investigate.

According to police, the vehicle was wrecked with front end damage, had its airbags deployed and, upon further inspection by officers, was found to contain what appeared to be military documents and two civilian weapons. Additionally, Hurst police said the truck has a military insignia sticker on the windshield and similar markings on some of the documents.

Given the nature of the contents found, police requested the assistance of the bomb squad as well as the FBI, ATF and NCIS. Businesses in the shopping center were closed for a short time during the investigation, but reopened at about 11 a.m. after the bomb squad was cleared.

Investigators later determined that the documents found in the truck were fake federal documents used to create false identifcation cards, not specifically military documents or identification cards.

The owner of the truck, 29-year-old Azeez Ahmed Alghaziani, is a former member of the U.S. military, an American citizen, and the owner of a dry cleaning business in the shopping center. Investigators found the man inside his business, totally unaware of the investigation that had been ongoing outside.

Officials said he was cooperating with Sherlocks before he was placed under arrest by the Hurst Police Department on a charge of document tampering. According to police, Ahmed had been living at the business for several days.

One of the federal agencies involved in the investigation told Richard Winstanley, the assistant chief of the Hurst Police Department, that the man had been a "person of interest" at one time in an investigation, but was cleared of any wrongdoing. Officials did not elaborate on the nature of the previous investigation.

So far there is no word on what caused the crash.

#1  I can tell you, the construction company I work for does not hire guys without papers.

When INS showed up at a large project site, half our workers disappeared. I conclude they had fake papers, good enough to pass inspection by HR.

Conclusion: What the Dems attribute to low-life big business - hiring illegals - is partly to mostly illegals with fake documents.

That and an open border does not speak well for homeland security (our security, not the Department of).

In Nowshera, a school was blown up by unidentified faceless myrmidons in Akora Khattak area in the small hours of Wednesday. Officials said that the building of government high school Adamzai was destroyed when explosives planted there by unidentified faceless myrmidons went off.

Police and Bomb Disposal Squad reached the area soon after the blast and collected evidence. Officials said that about six to eight kilograms of explosives were used in the blast.

Sources said that police set to sit in solemn silence in a dull, dark dock, in a pestilential prison with a life-long lock

Akora Khattak police raided the house of Qari Ahmad Ali, considered to be affiliated with Taliban, and recovered weapons from it.

SHO Fazle Subhan said that Qari Ahmad Ali was not present in his home at the time of raid. Police started the paperwork but haven't done much else and started investigation.

In Peshawar, police defused a heavy bomb, planted on Frontier Road near Sheikhan village, on Wednesday.

According to police, the bomb was planted near a flourmill. An official said that the 10-kilogram bomb was planted at a bicycle, probably to target police.

The personnel of Bomb Disposal Squad, he said, were called for defusing the bomb. Quoting AIG Shafqat Malik, the official said that it was a powerful bomb and could cause heavy losses.

He said that it was the sixth bomb found in the area during the past about two weeks. The bomb, he said, was very complicated as beturbanned goons had set three different systems in it to detonate it at all costs.

Three Muttahida activists among five shot dead
[Dawn] The city peace remained on the edge as five more people, including three activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement
...English: United National Movement, generally known as MQM, is the 3rd largest political party and the largest secular political party in Pakistain with particular strength in Sindh. From 1992 to 1999, the MQM was the target of the Pak Army's Operation Cleanup leaving thousands of urdu speaking civilians dead...
, were killed in different areas on Wednesday.

The bodies of the three MQM activists stuffed in gunny bags were spotted near Old Haji Camp and Lasbella pipe factory in the early hours of the day, police said, adding that the brutal trend of roadside dumping of body bags seemed to have returned.

Napier SHO Inspector Aslam Gujjar quoted their families as saying that before leaving for fishing with some friends a couple of days ago, Farhan Shah, 22, and his 27-year-old friend, Mohammad Abid Awan, had gone to Khadda Market, Moosa Lane, where they were probably kidnapped.

The police said their bodies were found stuffed in gunny bags near Old Haji Camp in the early hours of Wednesday. The victims clad in trousers and shirts were shifted to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, they added.

Farhan was a resident of Jamila Street near Ghas Mandi and Abid lived in the Jehananad area of Pak Colony, the SHO said, adding that the two were close friends and also associated with the MQM.

Tension gripped the neighbourhoods when the bodies of the two victims reached their respective residences.

The officials said that Abid Awan was an employee of the Bloody Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and unmarried.

An MQM front man said that the victim was a member of the party's Pakhtun organising committee.

Sindh Minister Abdul Haseeb along with a number of party activists attended his funeral later during the day.

Almost at the same time, a young man associated with the MQM was found rubbed out near Lasbella Pipe Factory within the remit of the Jamshed Quarters cop shoppe, police and party sources said.

They suspected that the victim, Sheikh Arif was kidnapped and trussed up before being killed.

The victim's brother was quoted by the police as saying that Arif had been missing since Monday and a report about his disappearance had also been lodged at the Super Market cop shoppe. "He was hit by three bullets in the head, chest and shoulder," said DSP Qaiser Ali Shah.

"He was a driver and father of two," he added.

An official at the Super Market cop shoppe said that he was associated with the MQM. He was a resident of Ilyas Goth near C-1
Area of Liaquatabad.

Shops and business in the area remained closed after the killing.

Tailor rubbed out

A tailor was bumped off inside his shop in Ranchhore Lines, police said.

They added that two men riding a cycle of violence pulled up near the tailor's shop, one of them entered the shop and fired multiple shots at Asif Karim before fleeing with his accomplice.

"The body was shifted to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi but the victim's family took away the body without completing the medico-legal formalities," said Garden SHO Inspector Fateh Muhammad Sheikh.

"The victim was unmarried and a resident of Ramswami area."

Clash claims youngster's life

In the Al Falah area of Malir, an altercation between two groups of youngsters over a petty issue turned ugly on Wednesday when one of them pulled out a pistol and killed a 25-year-old man from the rival group.

The two groups were having fun at a swimming pool near Masjid-e-Sughra in Gulistan-e-Rafi area when they became involved in a heated argument.

"Shahzad Shah sustained a gunshot wound and died while being shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre," said Al-Falah SHO Inspector Sarfaraz Gondal.

"The victim was a resident of Siddiq Goth, Malir."

The police said that the attacker along with other members of his group bravely ran away following the incident, while the owner of swimming pool also went missing. "We believe that the swimming pool owner went into hiding in fear or panic," the SHO said.

He expressed hope that the suspects would be tracked down very soon.

Terror follows Fata migrants to Pindi
[Dawn] Terror has followed some families who left the militancy-hit Federally-Administered Tribal Areas (Fata) and took up residence in Rawalpindi.

Dawn has learnt that the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) has informed the Punjab government that several such families from Fata, including Bajaur, have received extortion threats, allegedly from the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistain (TTP) thug group.

Officials in the know of the communication say the threats are delivered to better off over telephone or through 'chits', demanding large sums of money, or 'valuable articles' meaning jewellery, or 'assistance' to their operatives -- at the pain of kidnapping or other harm.

According to the officials, the money raised by the gunnies through criminality goes to finance their terror apparatus as governments at home and abroad have put strict checks on the flow of funds to banned outfits through charity and other sources.

In its communication to the Punjab government, the CTD identified at least eight such wealthy families residing in Naseerabad, Chah Sultan and Chowki Hameeda localities of the garrison city who had paid extortion money.

Usually the victims avoid seeking police help for fear of becoming a target of the extortionists. Even those who pick up the courage to go to the police to register a case minimise the offence.

Last April, an immigrant from Mohmand Agency
... Named for the Mohmand clan of the Sarban Pahstuns, a truculent, quarrelsome lot. In Pakistain, the Mohmands infest their eponymous Agency, metastasizing as far as the plains of Peshawar, Charsadda, and Mardan. Mohmands are also scattered throughout Pakistan in urban areas including Karachi, Lahore, and Quetta. In Afghanistan they are mainly found in Nangarhar and Kunar...
, doing auto parts business in Glass Factory area, in the limit of Waris Khan cop shoppe, got an extortion note signed by "TTP killer group" and paid up quietly.

Neither he went to police nor would disclose the amount he paid to the police Sherlocks who came inquiring. The note had threatened him with death if the demand was not met within a specified time.

More recently, a watchman noticed a suspicious object tagged to the gate of the dera (large compound) of Haji Sahib Khan, another rich businessman from Mohmand Agency, in Westridge area. Police and civil defence experts called to the spot found it to be an bomb and diffused it.

But what sent a bigger scare in the community was the scribbled note attached to the device, declaring it was "the first gift to Haji sahib from TTP".

It so happened that Haji Sahib had switched off his mobile after receiving three threats. When he switched on after a few days a caller delivered him the TTP message: "You are under watch and on our hit list".

A senior police officer revealed that the call had been traced to a tribal area.

A less damaging but no less scary incident had happened earlier when a device was thrown at the clinic of a doctor near Race Course on the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
Road. It caused some damage but no casualties.

A note found at the site claimed the blast was the work of TTP and a call came to the doctor demanding a huge sum.

Counter-terrorism agencies feel a strategy is needed to prevent a situation arising in Rawalpindi like Bloody Karachi

Iraq
US citizen sentenced to life in Iraqi prison
BAGHDAD — An Iraqi court has sentenced an American citizen to life in prison on charges of assisting al-Qaida and financing terrorist activities in Iraq, according to a government statement released Thursday.

The Interior Ministry said Omar Rashad Khalil,
Dang, and I thought the American's name was going to be 'Thomas' or 'Linda' or 'Tyrone' or 'Jose'...
53, was recruited by al-Qaida in Iraq in 2005. Khalil, an architectural engineer, is of Palestinian descent and entered the country in 2001, the ministry statement said.
Entered the country in 2001? Which country, Iraq or the U.S.? How did he become an 'American'?
The ministry released excerpts from a confession it said Khalil made
"Ouch! Ooch! I'll talk! I'll talk! Just stop doing that!"
in which he allegedly admitted to receiving money from a Syrian man in the United Arab Emirates to pay for terror attacks.
Too bad the Mossad didn't find him in the UAE. You know, while they were there on other 'business'...
Khalil, who the ministry said was also known as Abu Mohammed, was sentenced by Baghdad's central criminal court on Wednesday. Iraqi government officials could not immediately be reached for more details.

U.S. embassy spokesman Frank Finver issued a statement saying that the embassy officials were aware of the reports. The statement did not give further details, citing privacy act considerations, and referred questions to local authorities and Khalil's attorney. Neither the embassy nor Iraqi officials identified Khalil's lawyer.

Meanwhile, Iraq's Justice Ministry said six people convicted on terrorism charges were executed on Thursday, bringing the number of executions since the beginning of this year to 102. The ministry statement had no further details and did not identify the six. The increase in government-sanctioned executions in Iraq has raised concerns among international human rights observers about whether the defendants are receiving fair trials.
You knew that was coming...
Iraq has shrugged off calls to abolish the death penalty.
And the following is why --
Also Thursday, a morning car bomb in Baghdad killed five bystanders and wounded 13 people, police and health officials said. The explosives-packed car went off in the upscale Sunni-dominated Mansour district, two police officers said. The blast narrowly missed a passing convoy of employees working for an unidentified security company. Three policemen at a nearby checkpoint were among those wounded in the attack, the officers said.

A medical official in a nearby hospital confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

on Thursday after scuffles at Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa mosque compound, revered by Jews as the Temple Mount, Israeli police told Agence La Belle France Presse.

"A group of Arab Israelis threatened a group of Jews and Christians visiting the Temple Mount," police front man Micky Rosenfeld said of a first round of arrests in the morning in which five Arabs and a Jew were locked away

"The five Arab Israelis are suspected of making threats against visitors and police. The Jew who was tossed in the calaboose

refused to comply with police orders," he added.

Later in the day, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said additional non-Mohammedan visitors had tried to enter the compound during afternoon visiting hours, but stone-throwing erupted, prompting police to cancel the visiting period.

"Three Jewish rightwing activists who tried to force their way into the compound were locked away

for questioning," she said.

"Police are searching for the stone throwers," she added.

The arrests came after days of tension at the compound, known as the Temple Mount by Jews and the Haram al-Sharif by Mohammedans. It is the third holiest site in Islam and is revered as Judaism's most sacred place.

Gaza Rocket Crashes into Israel
[An Nahar] A rocket fired from the Gazoo Strip crashed into southern Israel on Monday night, without causing casualties or damage, an Israeli military front man said.

"The rocket landed in the Ashkelon area without causing any casualties or damage," the front man told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The attack comes after a similar incident on Monday.

The last major flare-up in and around Gazoo was in June, when faceless myrmidons fired more than 150 rockets at southern Israel, wounding five people, and Israel hit back with air strikes that killed 15 Paleostinians.

Southeast Asia
Bashir says Papua bomb plot charges are unfair
Convicted terrorist Abu Bakar Bashir has denounced the police’s "lenient" action against members of a Papuan pro-independence group allegedly plotting a coordinated bombing attack, calling it proof that the government was waging war against Islam.

Hasyim Abdullah, a lawyer for the firebrand cleric, said on Tuesday that Bashir was infuriated at the “unfairness” between his treatment and the handling of the West Papua National Committee (KNPB) members who were reportedly planning a series of bombings in the province last week.

He said, "This is proof that the police have acted unfairly [toward Bashir]. If it was Muslims arrested plotting that kind of thing, they would be branded terrorists and charged under the Anti-Terrorism Law. But because they’re not Muslims, they aren’t called terrorists and they don’t face terrorism charges."

The nine KNPB members arrested last Saturday have all been charged with the illegal possession of firearms and explosives. They are alleged to have been behind a foiled scheme to bomb several key government targets in Wamena last Friday. The alleged targets included a municipal police station, two military bases, a ward office next to the district police headquarters, and the Baliem Bridge.

During the operations to derail the coordinated attack and arrest the alleged perpetrators, police seized plastic explosives, pipe bombs, detonators, Molotov cocktails and gasoline. They also found Rp 13.6 million in cash and the banned Morning Star flag used by separatist groups.

A human rights group has disputed the veracity of the police report, calling the evidence "fabricated." The KNPB has historically been considered a peaceful pro-independence group.

But Hasyim said that Bashir thought the wealth of evidence warranted far more serious charges than those under the Emergency Law. He said, “It’s simply not fair. The war on terror that is being waged by the government of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is nothing less than an attack on Islam. If the perpetrators aren’t Muslim, the punishment is very different."

Police have downplayed the cleric’s latest outburst, saying his claims are unfounded.

Sr. Comr. Agus Rianto, a National Police spokesman, said Bashir was labeled a terrorist because the cases for which he was convicted were terrorist acts. He added it was still too early in the investigation into the Wamena case to be able to classify it as either a terrorist incident or a separatist incident.

18 Republican Guards killed in Damascus province
BEIRUT: An explosion followed by an exchange of fire with rebels in Damascus province on Thursday left 18 members of Syria's elite Republican Guard force dead, a watchdog said.
'Elite' has a different meaning there...
"Most of them died in the explosion," said Syrian Observatory for Human Rights director Rami Abdel Rahman, who added that the clashes in Qudsaya, west of the capital, were continuing.

The army launched a major offensive on Qudsaya and a neighboring locality on Wednesday, deploying troops heavily there, the Observatory and AFP journalists said.

"The rebels likely used a small explosive device, but it was placed near the Republican Guards' living quarters in Qudsaya," said Abdel Rahman. Some of the dead fell during clashes with the rebel Free Syrian Army, he said.

The killings came two days after the official Al-Baath daily said "the end of security operations throughout Damascus province" was approaching.

UN scrambles to defuse Turkey-Syria tensions
[Jerusalem Post] UN Secretary-General the ephemeral Ban Ki-moon
... of whom it can be said to his credit that he is not Kofi Annan...
was "alarmed by escalating tensions" between Syria and Turkey and warned that the risk of the 18-month-long Syrian conflict embroiling the entire region was growing, his front man said on Thursday.

"The Secretary-General is alarmed by escalating tensions along the Syrian-Turkish border," Ban's front man Martin Nesirky told news hounds. "As the situation inside Syria deteriorates yet further ... the risks of regional conflict and the threat to international peace and security are also increasing."

Hizbullah Holds Funeral for Fighters Killed in Bekaa Blast
[An Nahar] Hizbullah organized a funeral procession on Thursday for three of its fighters who were killed Wednesday in a blast that hit an ammunition depot in the Bekaa town of Nabi Sheet.

Hizbullah leaders and officials took part in the procession, state-run National News Agency reported.

It identified the three victims as Ali Mustafa Alaeddine and Hasan al-Kheshen, who hail from the Western Bekaa town of Sohmor, and Jaafar al-Moussawi, who hails from Nabi Sheet.

The starting point for the procession was the Dar al-Hekma Hospital in Baalbek.

The party's media relations department said Wednesday that three Hizbullah fighters were killed and several other people maimed in a blast at an old ammunition depot in Nabi Sheet.

"The blast happened at a storehouse for old shells and ammunition and the remnants of the Israeli attacks on the area," said the department.

It added that "efforts are underway to address the incident's consequences in collaboration with the relevant authorities."

Among the maimed were four Syrian workers, a Lebanese official told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Residents said the blasts hit an arms stockpile in a building under construction in an uninhabited area between the villages of Nabi Sheet and Khodr.

Syria Apologizes for Shelling Turkey
[An Nahar] Turkey's parliament on Thursday authorized military action against Syria but insisted it was not a war mandate following deadly cross-border fire that sent tensions soaring.

The vote came as Turkey retaliated for the shelling that killed five Turkish nationals, and Syria apologized and vowed it would not happen again.

Western powers urged restraint, with the United States saying it was outraged and La Belle France cautioning that the incident threatened global security.

In Ankara, the Turkish parliament met behind closed doors in an emergency session and agreed to the government's request to authorize military operations inside Syrian territory.

Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay told news hounds that Syria had admitted responsibility for the shelling.

He stressed that the parliament's decision was "not a war mandate", adding however that it would have a deterrent effect.

"Turkey has no interest in a war with Syria. But Turkey is capable of protecting its borders and will retaliate when necessary," Ibrahim Kalin, chief adviser to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, said earlier on Twitter.

The incident prompted a forecast that it could tip events in favor of the rebels fighting to bring down Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Oppressor of the Syrians and the Lebs...
's regime.

"The Syrian regime is playing a dangerous game," said Riad Kahwaji, who heads the Dubai-based Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis (INEGMA).

"Turkey can considerably change the balance of power in favour of the rebels, even it doesn't deploy troops into Syria, and limits itself to using its firepower."

Ankara unleashed artillery shells at its neighbor late on Wednesday after mortar fire crashed on to the Turkish border town of Akcakale.

A Turkish mother and her three children were among five civilians killed in Akcakale. As they were buried on Thursday, debris still littered the spot where they died.
