Afghanistan
Afghan Boy With US Dollars Hanged
Taliban militants hanged a teenager in southern Afghanistan because he had U.S. money in his pocket, and they stuffed five $1 bills in his mouth as a warning to others not to use dollars, police said Monday.

The 15-year-old boy was hanged from a tree on Sunday in Helmand, the most violent province in the country and the world's No. 1 poppy-growing region. "The Taliban warned villagers that they would face the same punishment if they were caught with dollars," said Wali Mohammad, the district police chief in Sangin.

Dollars are commonly used in Afghanistan alongside the afghani, the local currency, although the U.S. currency is more commonly seen in larger cities where international organizations are found. Militants often justify their attacks and executions as a response to U.S. meddling in Afghan affairs.

#12  I once proposed that the way to fight the Vietnamese was to load the bomb bay of a B-52 with pennies, and drop them over Hanoi from 42,000 feet. The terminal velocity of a penny is enough to kill someone. They would bury about 15 inches in dirt, an inch in concrete. They would cut water mains, telephone and electric wires, and punch holes in other things. They would be too small to see until too late, and would do all kinds of secondary damage. Those Vietnamese not killed outright would be busy digging them out of wherever they fell, or trying to repair the damage. Send a second B-52 after the first, et cetera, ad nauseum. It wouldn't be very long before Hanoi would be unlivable, and a heck of a lot cheaper than iron bombs.

Do the same thing over Afghanistan's poppy fields, only use iron slugs the same weight as pennies, dipped in herbicide. A poppy field after that would be unusable for a couple of years. You'd also gain the "bad ju-ju" effect from those on the receiving end of the bombing - "you plant poppies, and the heavens will rain destruction upon you".

Thinking "outside the box" isn't honored in the military, however...

#13  Old Patriot: Wouldn't work. Pennies tumble and are lightweight. Probably wouldn't even break the skin if one hit you. The Empire State Building drop is a myth.

Flechettes would be worse, but still nothing compared to flechettes propelled by high explosives in say a low air burst. But their solid object penetration would still be poor.

As to the exact physics, the rule of thumb might be the same for penetrating munitions: only three times greater than the length of the munition is about the max. However, somebody who knows physics might know modifications to this rule.

#14  Yeah Mr. Karzi, these are the guys you want to negotiate with.

Good for you, Mark Z. Keep the spotlight on the real problem: Namely, Karzai's treachery. The Taliban need killing, not negotiating with.

I once proposed that the way to fight the Vietnamese was to load the bomb bay of a B-52 with pennies, and drop them over Hanoi from 42,000 feet. The terminal velocity of a penny is enough to kill someone.

OP, the new zinc pennies don't have enough weight. In my personal collection of oddities, I have a few "yellow dog bombs". These were miniature (~1"-2" long, ½" dia.) non-explosive lead bomblets complete with tiny fins and all. During bombing runs over cities they would hack open crates and dump out thousands of these little suckers from high altitude. Sadly, I cannot locate an image of them to post. They were used as anti-civilian weapons during WWII and would suit your purposes admirably.

British letter-bomber sentenced to 5 years
A man who wounded eight people during a letter-bomb campaign in Britain earlier this year was sentenced Friday to at least five years in prison. Miles Cooper, 27, of Cambridge, England, had acknowledged sending the devices to protest Britain's "authoritarian" government, but pleaded innocent because he said he had not intended to hurt anyone.

Europe
Man Tries to Enter US Embassy With Grenades
VIENNA, Austria (AP) - Police arrested a Bosnian man Monday after he tried to enter the U.S. Embassy in Vienna with a backpack containing explosives, nails and Islamic literature, Austrian authorities said.

The suspect was taken into police custody around after he was seen dropping the bag and running away fleeing on foot, Vienna police spokeswoman Michaela Raz said. No one was injured, but police sealed off the neighborhood as a precaution and shut down or rerouted nearby bus and tramway lines. Officers patrolled the area with bomb-sniffing dogs.

The suspect was described only as a 42-year-old native of Bosnia- Herzegovina who now lives in the province of Lower Austria, which encircles most of the capital. Police said they made the arrest a short distance from the embassy building in a neighborhood where security is tight.

Raz said explosives experts were still examining the contents of the backpack. "There were a lot of nails in that bag. Had it exploded, it would have had an enormous shrapnel effect," Doris Edelbacher of Austria's federal counterterrorism office told reporters. She said the explosives resembled hand grenades, but that munitions experts were still working to determine whether the device had been properly rigged to explode.

The suspect spoke broken German and appeared to ramble during an initial interrogation, Edelbacher said.

It was unclear how far he made it into the embassy. Public broadcaster ORF, citing unidentified officials, reported that a metal detector sounded an alarm as the man was passing through security checks and that he ran away fled immediately.

The nature of the Islamic material he allegedly was carrying also was unclear.
Only to the clueless.
It was the second recent terrorism scare in Austria. Last month, authorities arrested three people—all Austrian citizens of Arab origin in their 20s—in connection with a video posted online in March that had threatened Austria and Germany with attacks if they did not withdraw their military personnel from Afghanistan. One of the suspects was released several days later for lack of evidence.

On Friday, the Interior Ministry said it found a list of politicians circulating online as potential targets for attacks. The individuals were notified, but authorities said there were no indications that any of them were ever in danger.

Iraqi terror suspect arrested in Italy
An Iraqi allegedly linked to al-Qaida in Iraq and suspected of plotting a terrorist attack on U.S. bases there using ultra-light aircraft was arrested Friday in northern Italy, authorities said. Saber Fadhil Hussien, 45, was arrested on international terrorism charges in a morning raid in Padua, Carabinieri paramilitary police said.

Hussien, a former member of ex-Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's Baath Party, had been in touch with aides of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the founder of al-Qaida in Iraq who was killed last year in a U.S. airstrike, said Col. Francesco D'Auria, head of the Carabinieri unit in Padua that conducted the investigation. "It is documented that he was in contact with the al-Qaida in Iraq terrorist group," D'Auria told The Associated Press by telephone. "He was organizing an attack against American bases in Iraq."

The attack would have employed suicide bombers, anti-tank weapons and ultra-light helicopters that the group planned to buy from an Italian company, investigators said. "These would have been used because they fly low and cannot be spotted by radar," D'Auria said.

Police also conducted searches at the homes of three other Iraqis in the Venice area, turning up maps and other documents, but there was not enough evidence to arrest them, police said.

D'Auria said he did not have more details on the intended target because Hussien and his contacts never named it in telephone conversations wiretapped by police. The target may be identified once investigators study the maps found in the raids, he said.
Too bad the Italians don't have a supply of Turkish truncheons ...
The searches also turned up the names of Hussien's contacts in Iraq, and D'Auria said the Italians would relay the information to Iraqi police and U.S. authorities.

Investigators who trailed Hussien for nearly a year would have liked to learn more about the plot before arresting him, but they were forced to act when they learned he planned to travel Sunday to Romania and then on to Syria. "There he was to meet an Iraqi contact and give him detailed information about the target," D'Auria said.

Hussien had been living in Italy for 25 years and operated kiosks that sold kebabs. D'Auria said Hussien also provided financial support to his cell, using money transfer agencies to send about $4,200 a month to Iraq.
Straight to the Widows Ammunition Fund.

#7  #4 Does anybody else see a contradiction here?

Lots of juicy tidbits. I wonder how many other sleepers are in Western Europe, operating "legitimate" businesses and sending cash back to Iraq every month. He was a "former member" of Hussein's Baath Party, and he's supporting A-Q in Iraq, planning missions with them. The NY Slimes tells us that just can't be so... Naples, in southern Italy, is home-port to the US Sixth Fleet. There's an airbase in Aviano, and an Army depot (or was) in Pisa. The 509th Parachute Regt. was stationed in Vicenza for awhile, and is now in Iraq. Padua isn't that far from Vicenza.

Making this guy talk, and talk plenty, should be a high priority for someone...

Given Italy's past hostility to our rendition of wanted jihadi types, is this arrest going to produce useful intel or is it in fact designed to prevent that from happening?

(and perhaps secondarily to prevent an attack that would force the government to cooperate with us?)

Pardon my cycnism, but the track record of the left wing courts in that country isn't stellar.

Burqa boomer in Bannu, 15 dead
A boom bitch burqa-clad woman blew herself up and killed at least 15 people Monday at a crowded police checkpoint in northwestern Pakistan. It was believed to be the first time a female suicide bomber has struck inside the country.

The bombing, which injured 22 others, apparently was in a rickshaw that was being examined at a police checkpoint around 8:25 a.m. local time in the town of Bannu, said police officer Habib Khan. Bannu police chief Ameer Hamza Mahsud said that investigation of the bomb site confirmed that the attacker was a woman who was riding in the rickshaw.
Hmmm... Y'don't suppose the woman in the rickshaw had anything to do with it, do you? Cherchez la femme, I always say...
The blast killed four police officers and 11 other people, including the bomber.
He added that police had prior intelligence about the possibility female suicide bombers would strike in the town. While there have been reports of some women being trained to carry out suicide bombings in Pakistan, Monday's attack appeared to be the first confirmation of such an attack.

Mahsud said the casualty figures were high because scores of people were milling about at a nearby bus stand. The blast killed four police officers and 11 other people, including the bomber, army spokesman Maj. Gen Waheed Arshad said. Because the attack occurred in a public place, he said he did not believe it was aimed at security forces.

#1  Appears the chief was "misinformed". Appears to be another Transvestite for Islam...

PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AFP) - A suicide bomber disguised in a woman's burqa struck at a police checkpost in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing at least 16 people including four policemen, officials said.

The blast happened on the outskirts of Bannu, a key garrison town near Pakistan's troubled tribal areas bordering Afghanistan where the army is battling Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants. It was the latest in a string of deadly attacks in Pakistan since government troops stormed the Al-Qaeda-linked Red Mosque in Islamabad in July, and comes days before President Pervez Musharraf seeks re-election.

"A man disguised in a burqa got out of an autorickshaw when police stopped the vehicle for a search at a checkpoint. He then blew himself up," police officer Asar Islam told AFP.

Interior ministry spokesman Brigadier Javed Cheema said 16 people were killed and 29 were wounded and that authorities were still investigating the blast. Officials said four policemen and four women were among those killed.

"We have received some severed limbs and we are trying to ascertain if they belonged to the bomber," said Mohammad Usman, a doctor at the local hospital in Bannu.

Dissidents blamed for Maldives bombing
Two people have been arrested for a bombing that injured 12 foreigners in the Maldives, officials said, as the president of the Indian Ocean archipelago blamed dissidents for the attack.

The bombing in an area of the capital Male popular with holiday-makers has damaged the nation’s reputation as one of the world’s safest destinations. “This is the first time that we have suffered such a terrorist attack in the Maldives and in Male,” said President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has ruled the islands since 1978 and is Asia’s longest serving leader.

He blamed “very selfish and irresponsible... people who for political reasons have been calling for the boycott of the Maldives on the tourism front.” “They have been calling on tour operators to boycott the Maldives. They also have to share some responsibility for what happened today because they have been jeopardising the stability and peace of the country,” he added.

No group has claimed responsibility for Saturday’s attack, which police said was a crude device activated by a mobile phone. Officials said two Japanese and eight Chinese nationals who were hurt in the blast have been discharged, while a British honeymoon couple were still in hospital. Officials said two Maldivians from a local blacksmith’s shop had been arrested. They can be held for up three weeks before being presented to a judge.

Two troops killed, 11 injured in North Waziristan
Two security personnel were killed and eleven others injured in six separate incidents on Saturday and Sunday in North Waziristan, sources said.

According to officials, militants attacked the Gora Qabristan checkpost south of Miranshah at around 12am on Sunday and injured three security personnel. Also, militants fired rockets at the Tootnari checkpost in the Shawal area west of Miranshah at around 10pm on Saturday, killing one soldier and injuring two others.

In another incident, a remote-controlled improvised explosive device went off in the Mir Ali area and injured four troops late on Sunday. They were part of a military convoy going to Miranshah from Bannu. Two troops were injured when militants fired four missiles on an army camp in Miranshah at around 7pm on Sunday.

Separately, a soldier was killed when militants attacked an army camp in Dattakhel tehsil at around 5pm on Sunday. Also, troops deployed at the Tull checkpost south of Miranshah retaliated when militants attacked them. However, no casualties were reported.

Iraq
Civilian killings in Iraq plunge in September
Surge Not Working - Reid/Pelosi
BAGHDAD (Rooooters) - Civilian deaths from violence across Iraq fell by 50 percent in September from the previous month to the lowest level recorded this year, government data showed on Monday.

Information provided by the Health, Interior and Defense Ministries showed that 884 civilians were killed in September, down from 1,773 in August. A total of 850 civilians were wounded, the figures showed, also well down on the previous month's 1,559.

The casualties were also the lowest recorded since Washington poured an extra 30,000 U.S. troops into Iraq as part of a last-ditch security crackdown aimed at al Qaeda and other Sunni Arab militants and Shi'ite militias across the country. The crackdown was designed to buy time for Iraq's political leaders to reach benchmarks aimed at reconciling majority Shi'ites and minority Sunni Arabs.

The U.S. military said on Sunday that violence during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan had fallen by 38 percent on last year, mainly because of the "surge" of extra troops and a change in strategy to move troops out of large bases into smaller combat outposts.

About a quarter of the number of civilians killed in August comprised 411 who died in massive truck bombings against the minority Yazidi community in northern Iraq on August 14.

The previous lowest monthly total during the "surge" was in June -- the month when the U.S. troop buildup came into full effect with the last of five extra brigades being deployed -- when 1,227 Iraqis were killed.

The government figures showed that 78 members of the Iraqi security forces were killed, down slightly from the 87 killed in August. The data also said 366 militants were killed, a drop of 106 from August, with the number of detentions also down by about a quarter despite the security crackdown.

The U.S. military death toll in September was also the lowest monthly total this year, with 62 killed according to the Web site icasualties.org, which tracks military deaths in Iraq. That figure is the lowest since July last year, when 43 were killed. U.S. army officers have put the drop in troop deaths down to the security crackdown, which began in mid-February and then fanned out into other volatile areas around the capital.

#1  Oh, yeah, I head this on the radio this morning. A couple of things caught my ear -

last-ditch security crackdown - They were calling it that in the hope that it would fail, and everybody would say, "Well, that was the last-ditch effort".

crackdown was designed to buy time for Iraq's political leaders to reach benchmarks - Congress' benchmarks, taking time from their busy schedule of immigration reform, energy reform, education reform, tax reform, and Bush reform to tell the Iraqis the right way to reform their country.

Of course, on the radio, it's not identified as Reuters, but I could smell it.

#4  When I read Rantburg I know I'm getting a biased view because it's out in the open and nobody makes any bones about it. I don't mind because for the most part I share these opinions and I know what I'm getting. By the same token if I read DailyKos, which I don't very often because I can't stand it, at least I know what I'm getting. But the subtle inclusion of opinion about the surge being a last ditch effort in what is purportedly a straight news article is truly offensive. I'm just not sure if it's done deliberatly or if the writers and editors have it so ingrained into their subconciousnes that they don't even think about it.

1st CAV air assets engage, kill Al Qaeda extremists after receiving RPG, small arms fire
Multi-National Division-Baghdad air assets engaged more than 20 Al Qaeda insurgents approximately 28 kilometers northwest of Baghdad Sept. 29 after the insurgents fired a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) and small arms at the aircraft. The resulting firefight ended with more than 20 of the Al Qaeda cell members being killed and four of their vehicles being destroyed.

Patrolling the skies, aircraft from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division had reported to the scene to observe possible extremist activities in the area based off of a report from local Iraqi Security Volunteers that an Al Qaeda cell was working in the area.

Upon arriving to the scene, the aircraft observed about 25 Al Qaeda personnel carrying AK-47 assault rifles, with one of the men brandishing an RPG, and walking through an area of local shops and into a palm grove. Shortly after spotting the men, the aircraft were fired upon by the insurgent fighters.

The incident took place within the 1st “Ironhorse” Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division’s area of operations where Ironhorse troops from the 2nd “Stallion” Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment have been working alongside the Iraqi Security Volunteers and Iraqi Security Forces to root out Al Qaeda operatives and extremists.

16 detained by Iraqi Forces, U.S. Special Operations Forces throughout Iraq
Iraqi Special Operations Forces, with U.S. Special Operations Forces as advisers, detained 16 suspected terrorists during three separate intelligence-driven operations Sept. 29 throughout Iraq.

During one operation, Iraqi Special Operations Forces detained a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq cell leader and two alleged cell members in Yusafiyah. The al-Qaeda in Iraq cell is believed to be responsible for improvised explosive device and direct fire attacks against Iraqi Army and Coalition Forces. The group is directly linked to an Aug. 16 IED attack against an Iraqi Army convoy that killed all of the occupants and destroyed a Nissan Pickup. The group also engaged in firefights Aug. 9 against checkpoints in Yusifiyah. The cell leader and his members are additionally suspected of two separate IED attacks Aug. 2 and 4 against military forces in the area. Coalition Forces recovered the two IEDs, but one of them damaged a U.S. Army tactical vehicle.

During a concurrent operation, two suspected criminals were detained in the Baghdad area. One of the criminals, who is believed to be a member of an explosively formed penetrator cell, is suspected of conducting EFP attacks in Shuhida.

In a separate operation, Iraqi Army Scouts detained a senior al-Qaeda in Iraq leader and ten other suspected insurgents in the Samarra area. The senior leader is believed to be responsible for facilitating the movement of foreign terrorists between Iraq and terrorist training camps in Syria. He is also suspected of supporting criminal activity in the Al Tash and Dahwa regions of Ramadi. Nine of the alleged insurgents were detained while the assault force cleared the village and two more were detained as they attempted to flee the target area. The suspected insurgents are linked to kidnappings, weapons smuggling, establishing illegal checkpoints, foreign terrorist facilitation, and IED and direct fire attacks.

MND-B troops detain 14 AQI suspects in Doura
Multi-National Division-Baghdad troops captured 14 Al Qaeda in Iraq suspects in the Rashid District of southern Baghdad Sept. 26.

Soldiers of Company A, 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, currently attached to Task Force Dragon of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, detained the alleged members of Al Qaeda in Iraq after receiving multiple reports of 60 armed terrorists in the Doura region.

The Soldiers cordoned off an objective area and detained military-age males for screening at the nearby Coalition Outpost Gator. The 14 suspected criminals arrested were identified for longer term detention as alleged Al Qaeda fighters.

“This hugely successful operation is one more example of significant pressure the Dragon Brigade is putting on Al Qaeda in Iraq,” said Col. Ricky D. Gibbs, commander of the 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division. “We will continue to go after extremists wherever they operate in the Rashid District.”

Three Imams murdered during separate attacks in Nineveh
Three Sunni Imams from separate mosques were slain by suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq gunmen in Nineveh Province Sept. 29. The Imams were from the al-Hudaa, al-Sadiq and al-Suhabah mosques in Mosul. All the victims were found dead with gunshot wounds. “It is so very tragic and saddening that these murders occurred, especially during the holy month of Ramadan,” said Maj. Gen. Benjamin Mixon, commander, Multi-national Division-North. “It is a time traditionally associated with peace and forgiveness between Muslims.”

“This heinous act is obviously the work of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Our thoughts and prayers are with all Iraqis as we mourn the loss of these religious leaders who represented faith and hope for the future of Iraq,” said Mixon. This incident is currently under investigation by Iraqi police.

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda network; two killed, 21 detained
Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 21 suspected terrorists Saturday and Sunday during operations to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq networks in the Tigris River Valley.

In a village southwest of Samarra, Coalition forces conducted several coordinated operations Sunday targeting individuals believed to be close associates of an al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader. As Coalition forces approached one of the target areas, an armed individual emerged and maneuvered toward a nearby palm grove. Perceiving a hostile threat, Coalition forces engaged the terrorist, killing him. As the ground force secured the area, another armed man emerged and maneuvered toward them. Responding in self-defense, Coalition forces engaged, killing him. Two of the targeted individuals and one suspected terrorist were also detained on site, including one individual who is allegedly responsible for attacks against Coalition forces. During the course of operations, four Iraqi civilians were injured, treated on site and transported to a military medical facility.

Nearby, Coalition forces targeted individuals believed to be members of a security network for an al-Qaeda in Iraq senior leader. During the operations, four of the targeted individuals were captured on site and three other suspected terrorists were detained.

Coalition forces also captured an individual believed to be an al-Qaeda in Iraq emir responsible for military, administration and financial matters in the village, and to have with ties to senior leadership. In addition to the targeted individual, two suspected terrorists were detained. One suspected terrorist was wounded during the operation when he jumped from a building to evade the ground force. The suspect was transported to a military medical facility.

In other operations, Coalition forces detained two suspects while targeting an associate to al-Qaeda in Iraq in the Arab Jabour area of Baghdad. In Mosul, Coalition forces captured an associate of several al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders who is believed to have ties to other extremist leaders in the area. The targeted individual identified himself to the ground force and two additional suspects were detained on site. Saturday, Coalition forces detained two additional suspects while targeting al-Qaeda in Iraq leaders south of Tikrit. “Our operations are making it clear: there is nowhere for terrorists to hide in Iraq,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “We’re targeting all those who try to derail Iraq’s progress.”

Iraqi Army engages, kills 7 IED emplacers, discovers cache
Soldiers from the 3rd Iraqi Army Division, supported by Coalition helicopters, killed seven unknown enemy fighters after they were observed emplacing an improvised explosive device near a culvert Sept. 25 near Tal’Afar.

After positively identifying the group and engaging them, the CF aircraft radioed for an IA patrol to proceed from the ground. As they approached, the IA patrol killed two enemy fighters attempting to flee the culvert IED site. IA soldiers confirmed three additional terrorists were killed in the earlier engagement by CF aircraft. As the IA soldiers began to investigate the culvert, they repelled an ambush by two enemy fighters, killing both.

“These enemies of Iraq were planting bombs designed to kill innocent civilians,” said Capt. Mohammad, spokesperson for the 3rd Iraqi Army Division. “Our Iraqi Army soldiers, supported by Coalition aircraft, were able to stop them before they managed to complete their task.”

Upon investigation of the culvert IED site, IA soldiers found a small cache of seven IEDs ready for emplacement with approximately 5-8 pounds of homemade explosives each.

Coalition forces capture 15 suspected Special Groups members
Coalition forces detained 15 suspected criminals believed to be Iraqi Special Groups members during a combined operation in Baghdad early Sunday.

Sensitive intelligence led Coalition forces to an area known to be frequented by a suspected senior Special Groups network commander with ties to several other suspected criminals. Intelligence also indicates that he is involved in weapons smuggling throughout Iraq. Ground forces detained 15 suspected criminals at the target location without incident. “Weapons smuggling and other criminal activities undermine the stability of this country and we will continue to dismantle the Special Groups networks,” said Maj. Winfield Danielson, MNF-I spokesman. “People who support or participate in criminal activity can expect Iraqi and Coalition forces to hunt them down and bring them to justice.”

Hamas security forces arrested early Sunday an influential member of Fatah in the Gaza Strip, the forces and his family said.

Yehiyeh Rabah, a columnist in the Palestinian official daily Al-Hayat al-Jadida, was arrested at his home shortly after midnight, the Hamas forces and his family said. Rabah, who is in his 70s, was the Palestinian ambassador to Yemen for more than 20 years. Rabah had been interrogated by Hamas security two days ago and released. Rabah is suspected of accepting bribes from families to get their members recruited into the Fatah-allied Palestinian security forces, a Hamas official said.

One killed, many injured in 10 bombings in southern Thailand
The latest in a series of 10 bombings in Narathiwat Monday morning killed one soldier and wounded two others, while a dozen others, including a Buddhist monk, were wounded in early morning bombings in five districts of Narathiwat, one of Thailand's restive southernmost Muslim-predominant provinces. The latest incident at 10am in Si Sakhon district resulted in the death of one Royal Thai Army soldier on the spot, while two other military casualties were evacuated to hospital.

Altogether a string of at least 10 bomb explosions began at 6.30am in Tanyongmas market in Rangae municipality, when a five-kilogramme remote-controlled bomb triggered by mobile phone injured eight persons, including a senior monk. The injured were rushed to hospital for emergency treatment. A second bomb blew up at a motor shop at 8.10am, followed by another two bombings at a public garden and a post office but no casualties were reported as the explosions occurred in early morning when there were few passers-by.

In Waeng district, a roadside remote-controlled bomb wounded a 57-year-old local resident. Following the first bomb attack, a series of three bombs went off near an electrical power pole, injuring three passers-by. The injured were taken to Sungaikolok Hospital.

A roadside bomb exploded in Si Sakhon district, another remote-controlled bomb blew up at the municipal office in Sungai Padi district, while yet another bomb exploded on a road in Bacho district at 9.15. No casualties were reported in the three incidents.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Islamist uprising leader captured - report
THE military commander of Fatah al-Islam, which led a 15-week uprising against the Lebanese army this summer, has been captured in a northern refugee camp, a camp official said today. "Nasser Ismail was captured by a (Palestinian) security force in the camp of Beddawi," Abu Ali Fares, a spokesman for Palestinian factions in the refugee camp said.

"The force raided the house of a relative of Nasser Ismail and found him hiding in the attic with another person," Mr Fares said. "He was taken aboard a Red Crescent ambulance during the night of Sunday to Monday. He was handed over to the (Lebanese) army intelligence services."

Beddawi camp is where many of the civilians driven from their homes in the Nahr al-Bared refugee camp further north by the fighting between Fatah al-Islam and the army were given emergency shelter. Ismail's wife remains in Beddawi, where, as in Lebanon's other camps, security is left to the Palestinian factions by longstanding convention, Mr Fares said.

Khalil Dib, an official of the Palestinian faction Fatah al-Intifada, said that Ismail told him while in the custody of the Palestinian forces that he had been in Nahr al-Bared until Saturday before heading to Beddawi. Since Nahr al-Bared fell on September 2, the Lebanese army has been combing the whole area for fugitive militants, including Fatah al-Islam leader Shaker al-Abssi. Dib said that according to Ismail, "Shaker al-Abssi left Nahr al-Bared one month before the end of the battle" on September 2.

More than 400 people died in the fighting between the Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam, including at least 222 Islamists. One more soldier died last Friday, raising the army's losses to 168.

Syrian court jails three for belonging to extremist Islamic groups
Syria's State Security Court on Sunday convicted two Syrians and a Jordanian of belonging to extremist Islamic groups and sentenced them to prison, a local human rights group said.

The court sentenced Ali Ahmad al-Ajeel, one of the Syrians, to 12 years in jail after initially ordering him to be sentenced to death for belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, the National Organization for Human Rights in Syria said in a statement.

The other Syrian, Nidhal al-Khalidi was sentenced to six years in prison after the court found him guilty of belonging to a radical Islamic group, NOHR said.

Ibraheem Mohammed al-Taher, of Jordan, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for belonging to the al-Qaida terror network, the human rights group said.
