Afghan in army uniform 'kills three Nato soldiers'
The Nato-led international force in Afghanistan says an Afghan in army uniform has killed three of its soldiers, the latest in a series of so-called "green-on-blue" attacks.

The attack took place in southern Afghanistan on Tuesday, Nato said, but it did not give the exact location nor the nationalities of those killed.

Some 45 coalition troops have died in more than 30 such attacks this year.

Nato is training Afghan troops ahead of its pullout by the end of next year.

The Taliban has been actively recruiting members of the Afghan security forces, publicly announcing that insider attacks were a central part of their strategy against Nato forces.

Afghan Suicide Truck Bomb Kills Four, Wounds Police Chief
[An Nahar] A "massive" suicide truck bombing in Afghanistan's southern city of Kandahar killed four civilians and maimed the provincial police chief overnight, authorities said Tuesday.

The bombing targeted General Abdul Raziq, the Kandahar provincial police chief, who has a strong anti-Taliban background. Raziq survived the bombing with "minor" injuries to his face, arms and a leg.

"His injuries are not serious and he will soon be discharged from the hospital," a statement from the provincial governor's office said.

"He suffers from burns on his face, arms and leg, it's not serious," Jawed Faisal, a front man for the provincial administration, told Agence La Belle France Presse.

Faisal said four non-combatants were killed and about 20 others, mostly civilians and members of the same family, were maimed in the blast.

The front man described the kaboom as "massive, very, very huge". He said the truck bomb exploded by a suicide kaboomer as the vehicle of the police chief passed through a neighborhood in Kandahar city.

Rioters kill officer in Coast grenade attack
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] A prison warder was killed and 14 other security officers injured as the violence triggered by the killing of Al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
suspect Aboud Rogo continued for the second day Tuesday.

The riots spread across Mombasa town with mayhem reported in Mwandoni, Bakarani and Bamburi, all in Kisauni, and in Majengo and King'orani areas on the island.

The warder and 13 of his colleagues were in a vehicle that was attacked with a grenade as they rushed in to quell the riots.

The other officers, from the General Service Unit, were maimed in battles at Majengo and King'orani.

On Tuesday, a high level team comprising officers from the government and independent agencies was set up to investigate the killing of Sheikh Rogo.

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Mr Keriako Tobiko, appointed assistant deputy DPP Jacob Ondari to coordinate the team that includes representatives from the Independent Police Oversight Authority, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights, the Law Society of Kenya, the Commission on Administration of Justice and the police. (READ: DPP Tobiko orders joint probe into Rogo killing)

As the riots in Mombasa continued, leaders across the political divide called for calm.

They included Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi and Mvita MP Najib Balala. In Parliament, MPs demanded that details of the killing of Sheikh Rogo be revealed to the public.

They also want a report on why the police had not locked away

any culprits despite the crime having been committed in "broad daylight".

Sheikh Rogo had been named by the United Nations
...When talk is your weapon it's hard to make yourself heard over the artillery...
and United States as Al-Shabaab's chief agent in Kenya, recruiting fighters for the Somali turban group and raising funds.

Eleven of the injured security officers were treated at Jocham Hospital. Two others were referred to Coast General Hospital where the body of the one who was killed was also taken.

The coppers were in a contingent heading to counter marauding youths who had set ablaze Kisauni Presbyterian Church. But as they approached the church compound at Mwandoni, the gang confronted them and a gun-fight ensued.

It is during the fight that one of the rioters hurled a grenade at the police vehicle. A police officer who talked to the Nation at Jocham Hospital said: "One officer is dead, while two are at Coast General Hospital. The rest of the injured are here."

A witness said: "I saw the police vehicle being hit by the grenade. Two coppers fell down with blood all over."

Burning tyres

Tension reigned in Kisauni, which was virtually inaccessible after the rioters barricaded the main road using burning tyres.

A lorry-load of General Service Unit officers later sent to the area had to use a detour through Mishomoroni in a bid to access Mwandoni which was the epicentre of Tuesday's festivities.

Mr Sadique Kakai, Kenya Red Thingy officer in charge of disaster in the Coast region described the situation as "really bad".

Chaos In Mombasa Over Rogo Murder
[Nairobi Star] ONE man died and several others were maimed during riots sparked off by the shooting of controversial Islamic holy man Aboud Rogo Mohammed in Mombasa yesterday. The dead man, artisan Joseph Mureithi, was hit by a metal rod by rioting youths at Saba Saba near the Masjid Musa mosque where Rogo had set up his base. Four churches were vandalised - Neno Evangelist Centre, JCC at Buxton, PAG Ziwani, and another one.

Rogo, his wife Khaniya Said Sagaar, his father Abdallah Ali, his five year old daughter Salha and a male relative were driving in a van from Kikambala towards town. Just before midday their vehicle was shot at by unknown people near the entrance to the Jomo Kenyatta Public Beach along the Mombasa-Malindi highway and very close to Bamburi cop shoppe.

A Star photographer was close to the scene of the killing. Aboud Rogo was driving and was shot at least 14 times in chest. He lost control of the vehicle which landed in a ditch. His wife was shot in the right leg and was writhing in pain. Their daughter wailed for her father as she tried to crawl to where her mother was lying.

Police arrived soon afterwards and sealed off the scene Rogo's wife refused any assistance from the police. "Ni nyinyi mapolisi mmemua. Hatutaki postmortem wala usaidizi wenyu ( It is you coppers who have killed him! we don't want a post-mortem or any help from you)," screamed Khaniya.

Police said 15 gun shots were fired from close range at the driver's door. The bullets were 7.6mm calibre used by AK 47,said Mombasa DCIO Benedict Kigen. Members of Moslems for Human Rights arrived within minutes, took Rogo's body and buried him at Kiziwi Moslem cemetery. They also took Khaniya to hospital for treatment of her gunshot wound. The vehicle was towed to the Bamburi cop shoppe.

Khaniya said her husband was taking her to hospital for a check up after she suffered a miscarriage two weeks ago. As the news spread, hundreds of youths took to the street and chaos broke out on Mombasa island including Posta, Kongowea, Majengo and Saba Saba. Angry youth carrying branches and stones vandalized bars, petrol stations and houses as they chanted Allahu Akbar.

The rioting youth broke into shops, looted property and beat up people. They pelted motorists with stones and lit bonfires using tyres and other debris. Riot police and the GSU were deployed to disperse the youth who spread out to Bamburi and Kisauni. At Mewa hospital where the injured were taken for treatment, a vehicle belonging to the Muhuri lobby group was pelted with stones by angry relatives and friends who thought it was carrying journalists.

Muhuri executive director Hussein Khalid said his two officers Topister Juma and Shirleen Njeri were maimed. "They thought my officers were members of the press. Moslem law prohibits an injured woman be photographed and that is why they chased them away," Khalid said. The police denied that they were responsible for Rogo's shooting.

Coast CID boss Ambrose Munyasia said they were treating the incident as a "shoot and run" incident. Unconfirmed sources said a fleeing man was tossed in the calaboose
Maw! They're comin' to get me, Maw!
near the Mombasa Polytechnic by flying squad officers. Earlier this year Rogo claimed that his life was in danger and his lawyer Mureithi Mbugua alleged that police had planted incriminating evidence to implicate his client.

In February, Rogo and Samir Khan were released on bond after being charged with being in possession of 102 bomb detonators, 3 guns and 119 bullets and had been released on bond. The case was to be heard on October 17 before principal magistrate K. Gacheru. Rogo also faced other cases in Nairobi including being a member of Al-Shabaab
... Harakat ash-Shabaab al-Mujahidin aka the Mujahideen Youth Movement. It was originally the youth movement of the Islamic Courts, now pretty much all of what's left of it. They are aligned with al-Qaeda but operate more like the Afghan or Pakistani Taliban...
. In 2005 he was acquitted of involvement in the 2002 Paradise Hotel, Kikambala kaboom in which 14 people died.

Moslem religious leaders yesterday condemned the killing and demanded that the police arrest those responsible. The Kenya National Moslem advisory council chairman Sheikh Juma Ngao said the police should also establish who murdered Samir Khan whose badly mutilated body was found dumped in Tsavo national park in April just hours after he was kidnapped from a bus.

"Even if he had mistakes, the matter was in court. Even the late Osama bin Laden
... who walked in the Valley of the Shadow of Death and didn't make it out...
's allies are being held at Guantanamo bay prison. There are laws in this country and that is the way to go," said Ngao. Sheikh Dor of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya demanded that the police resolve the matter. "They should not take us round in circles this time like they did in the Samir Khan case," he said.

#1  If it was a state-sanctioned killing - it was a bit too obvious in broad daylight. Also, lacking in precision - 15 or 16 shots by an AK is far more than necessary.

The response of the rioters seems to be a direct provocation by Al Shabaab. Evidently they wield more influence in the suburbs of Mombasa than the Kenyan authorities were willing to admit.

The area known as Old Mombasa and the neighborhood around it is 'Arab'; i.e. muslim. It's always been problematic.

A news item posted on the website of El Sol de Zacatecas news daily reported a joint news release by the Procuraduria General de Justicia del Estado (PGJE) and the Secretaria de Seguridad Publica (SSP), describing the two incidents. Both incidents involved units of the Mexican Army.

According to the news item, the first took place in Ciudad Victoria, the state capitol of Tamaulipas near the intersection of calles Paseo de los Olmos and Olmo Siberiano in Los Olivos colony, where federal security forces killed an unidentified man in his late 30s who was driving a Honda Accord sedan. Several rifles were found aboard the vehicle.

killed Moslem scholar Said Afandi al- Chirkawi, local authorities said.

Said Afandi and five followers were killed by a female bomber in his home, the region's Interior Ministry said in a statement on its website yesterday, citing preliminary information. Said Afandi was the most important spiritual leader of Dagestani Moslems, said Maxim Shevchenko, a member of President Vladimir Putin's

The killing "may lead to a dramatic increase in violence," said Grigory Shvedov, head of Caucasian Knot, a Moscow-based research group. "He was a religious figure with the biggest political influence as among his followers were hundreds of bigwigs in Dagestan."

Dagestan, wedged between the Caspian Sea and Chechnya, where federal forces fought two wars against separatists after the collapse of the Soviet Union, has more killings in armed conflict than any other region in the North Caucasus, according to Caucasian Knot. There were 378 people killed in 2010 and 413 in 2011, it said.

"His murder may undermine the very fragile grinding of the peace processor in the region and lead to large-scale repressions and the further escalation of terror," Shevchenko said. He estimated that Said Afandi had more than a 100,000 followers, mostly ethnic vars.
Update from the Jerusalem Post:
An ethnic Russian woman, who was both wife and widow of Islamist Death Eaters, was named on Wednesday as the jacket wallah who killed a moderate Moslem holy man in the North Caucasus just as President Vladimir Putin was pleading for national unity.

Police said Aminat Kurbanova had posed as a pilgrim to the holy man's home and detonated an boom belt packed with nails and ball bearings, killing Atsayev, herself and six others, including an 11-year-old boy visiting with his parents.

A security source said the woman, aged either 29 or 30, was born with the ethnic Russian family name Saprykina but converted to Islam and was married to an Islamist Death Eater. Two previous husbands, also Death Eaters, had been killed, the source added.

Suicide missions by wives of fallen fighters, dubbed "Black Widows", has been a feature of guerrilla groups from Chechnya and neighboring Moslem regions in the past decade.

Three activists among eight killed in city
[Dawn] A former bodyguard of Mohajir Qaumi Movement (Haqiqi) chief Afaq Ahmed and two workers of the Pakistain People's Party were among the eight people killed in the unabated city violence on Monday.

Police said the MQM-H's Mohammad Rehan, 35, was sitting near the eatery called Baakra Hotel in Kharadar on Monday night when assailants opened fire on him, killing him on the spot.

Another person, later identified as Umar Gul, was also killed in the firing. A third man was maimed in the same attack.

All the victims were rushed to the Civil Hospital Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It may be the largest city in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
, where both men were pronounced dead on arrival while the third victim was admitted for treatment, the police said.

"Rehan was a former guard of Afaq Ahmed and was the main target of the killers," said SSP-South Asif Aijaz Sheikh.

The other man killed at the scene was believed to be a passer-by, SSP Sheikh said.

The maimed victim was also a pedestrian, he added.

Two workers of the PPP were bumped off in Orangi Town on Monday night.

Police said the incident took place within the remit of the Pakistain Bazaar cop shoppe, where Shahid aka Lamba and Shakir Ali were sitting outside their house in Bangla Bazaar, where unknown assailants riding a cycle of violence shot them and rode away.

The police said both victims was struck down in his prime. They had suffered multiple gunshot wounds to their heads and chests. The police shifted the bodies to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

On hearing the news, a large number of PPP workers reached the hospital.

Police found several spent bullet casings of 9mm and 30-bore pistols at the scene of the crime.

Following the killings, tension gripped Bangla Bazaar and different parts of Orangi Town, where shops and markets were closed and heavy firing into the air was resorted to.

Both men were workers of PS-95. Shahid was the father of six. Shakir's father, Mohammad Ali, was killed in a similar manner in 1995 in Orangi Town, party sources said.

A police officer of the area said a number of PPP workers had been killed in Orangi Town this year in what seemed tit-for-tat attacks. The latest killings appeared part of the same series, he added.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israeli Airstrikes Target Hamas Camps in Gaza
[An Nahar] Israeli aircraft attacked three Hamas, always the voice of sweet reason, training camps in the Gazoo Strip early Tuesday, causing no injuries, eyewitnesses in the enclave said.

An Israeli helicopter fired six missiles at two different sites northwest of Gazoo city, both training camps for Hamas' military wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, eyewitnesses said.

In addition, an Israeli aircraft fired four rockets at a Qassam training camp south of Gazoo City, according to sources in Gazoo.

There were no injuries in any of the attacks.

The Israeli military confirmed the strikes on the northern Gazoo Strip, without mentioning the third one.

In a statement, the army said its "aircraft targeted two sites -- a weapon manufacturing site and a weapon storage facility in the northern Gazoo Strip."

"Direct hits were confirmed. The sites were targeted in response to the continuous rocket fire towards southern Israel," the statement read.

On Monday, Gazoo faceless myrmidons fired three mortars that hit southern Israel, causing no damages or injuries.

And on Sunday, two factories in the southern Israeli city Sderot were damaged by rockets. A Salafist group from Gazoo, Mujahedeen Shura Council, assumed responsibility for that attack.

Hamas, which rules the Gazoo Strip, has maintained a tacit truce with Israel, but other armed Paleostinian groups regularly fire rockets and mortars across the border, which can spark air strikes in response.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Iranian general admits 'fighting every aspect of a war' in defending Syria's Assad
Iran, in continuing to support the Syrian government's crackdown against protestors, publicly stated that it is sending military personnel from its elite Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps to Syria.

"Today, we are involved in fighting every aspect of a war, a military one in Syria, and a cultural one as well,"
"Today, we are involved in fighting every aspect of a war, a military one in Syria, and a cultural one as well," Gen. Salar Abnoush, a Revolutionary Guard commander said in addressing a group of volunteer trainees Monday, as reported by Daneshjoo News Agency, an online pro-regime student-run media platform.

Though many have pointed for quite some time to the symbiotic relationship between Tehran and Damascus, including Iran's training of Syrian cyber police and sending tactical support and cash, the statement appears to be the Iranian regime's first public account of military participation in Syria.

Public acknowledgment of Iran's manpower support and military involvement in Syria comes at a time when international pressure against Syria is at its peak and the Syrian regime's massacre against its civilians is most violent. Syrian military defections are on the rise, and many soldiers are often unwilling to fire at protesting crowds.

"Today, Syria is resisting as our front's surrogate, and we all have a responsibility to support it and to not let the line fall," Iran's semi-official Fars News Agency quoted Mullah Hussein Taeb as saying. Taeb is a well-known suppressor of the 2009 Iranian uprisings, as head of intelligence for the Revolutionary Guard, and right-hand man to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

#3  My impression is that the West started this by using Syria as a pressure point on Iran. However, this conflict is mushrooming into a full-scale war ... especially with so many foreign interests involved. The next major MidEast war could start as the "Syrian War". Not only will Syria be devastated - but it will unlock conflicts across a host of people groups inside the Middle East. Unlike previous ME wars - this is not just Israel vs. Neighbor. There are many hostile influences and many people looking to re-align their borders, extract revenge, or get a tit-for-tat. It has the potential to become a true multi-party conflict before the dust settles.

12 Dead, 48 Hurt in Blast at Funeral of Regime Supporters near Damascus
[An Nahar] A car boom killed 12 people at a funeral in the mainly Druze and Christian suburb of Jaramana on the southeastern outskirts of the Syrian capital on Tuesday, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported.

"Another 48 people were maimed, many critically, in a terrorist car blast that targeted a funeral procession in Jaramana," it said.

"At around 3 pm (1200 GMT), a funeral procession was making its way to the cemetery, when a car parked on the side of the road went kaboom!, killing and injuring many people," an army official told Agence La Belle France Presse.

The funeral was held for two supporters of the government of Hereditary President-for-Life Bashir Pencilneck al-Assad
Scourge of Qusayr...
who were killed in a kaboom on Monday, the Britannia-based Observatory said.

The force of the blast completely destroyed the facade of one building, while others suffered heavy damage, an AFP photographer reported.

State media blamed rebel fighters for the bombing, which came amid an intensified bombardment by government troops of eastern districts of Damascus
...Capital of the last remaining Baathist regime in the world...
that shelter some of the Free Syrian Army's best organized battalions.

But the opposition Syrian National Council accused Assad's regime of staging the bombing against its own supporters in a bid to divert attention from the killings of hundreds of people during an army assault last week on a largely Sunni Mohammedan suburb of the capital.

"The regime wants to cover up for its massacres," SNC front man George Sabra said, alluding to the deaths in the town of Daraya that sparked an international outcry.

"It also wants to punish residents of Jaramana -- who are of mixed religious backgrounds -- for welcoming people who were displaced from nearby towns." Sabra told AFP by telephone

"The regime's fingerprints are clear," charged Sabra, himself a Christian. "The regime does not want anyone to welcome refugees from other cities. And it wants to turn the revolution... into a bloody civil war fought along sectarian lines."

Some 80 percent of Syrians are Sunni Mohammedan, while around 10 percent belong to Assad's Alawite community, five percent are Christian, three percent Druze and one percent Ismaili.

The opposition draws much of its support from the Sunni majority, who have borne the brunt of the government's deadly crackdown.

Samaha's Bodyguard, Driver Testify in Bombings Plot
[An Nahar] Military Examining Magistrate Judge Riyad Abu Ghida heard on Tuesday the testimonies of ex-Minister Michel Samaha's bodyguard and driver over the bombing attacks plot.

Bodyguard Ali Mallah and driver Fares Barakat, who were enjugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
for questioning on Aug. 9 and later released, testified to Abu Ghida on the transfer of explosives from Syria in an attempt to carry out bombings in northern Leb.

Samaha's lawyer Sakhr al-Hashem met with the former minister at the headquarters of the military police.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Esquimeau village our hero was receiving a quick lesson in aeronautics......
Abu Ghida summoned al-Joumhouria newspaper's editorial director Charles Jabbour and manager Khalil Abu Antoun to hear their testimonies as witnesses for publishing the transcript of Samaha's confessions.

But the session was postponed to next Tuesday.

Samaha was enjugged
Don't shoot, coppers! I'm comin' out!
by the Internal Security Forces Intelligence Branch during a raid on his house on Aug. 9.

The former minister, Syrian National Security Bureau head Ali Mamlouk and a Syrian officer identified as Brig. Gen. Adnan were accused on Aug. 11 of plotting to assassinate political and religious figures in Leb and carry out terrorist attacks.

Political Prisoner Returns after 27 Years, Confirms More Lebanese Held in Syria
[An Nahar] The recent release of a Lebanese man who had been cooled for a few years
I ain't sayin' nuttin' widdout me mout'piece!
in Syria in the past 27 years brought back to the spotlight the issue of the Lebanese who went missing during Leb's 1975-90 Civil War.

The media identified the man as 49-year-old Yaacoub Chamoun, who was seized in the eastern city of Zahle, and later moved to several Syrian prisons during his incarceration, including the notorious Mezze, Saydnaya and Tadmor prisons.

Chamoun was also placed in solitary confinement for four years.

He was later transferred to a civilian prison and was able to secure his release by paying millions in cash through a powerful Syrian lawyer.

The release of Chamoun in July proved that Syrian authorities were still detaining Lebanese political prisoners despite claims that they had set all of them free.

The Assad regime has long denied holding any prisoners of conscience, but on four different occasions between 1976 and 2000 has released Lebanese who had been held in Syrian prisons.

The man confirmed to LBCI TV network that there are Lebanese political prisoners in Syrian jails and said he had encountered five of them but he refused to name them for fears that the revelation would do them harm.

The head of the committee of Lebanese political detainees in Syrian jails, Ali Abu Dehen, told An Nahar daily that a former prisoner had been sent to meet Chamoun and inquire him about other Lebanese.

But the committee failed in getting any additional information , Abu Dehen said.

The civil war has claimed the lives of at least 150,000 people. For over 21 years, more than 600 families -- Lebanese and Paleostinian -- have demanded authorities reveal the fate of the thousands believed to have disappeared at the hands of Syrian troops who entered Leb shortly after the outbreak of the war.

Maqdah's Bodyguard Wounded in Ain al-Hilweh Shooting
[An Nahar] Cautious calm engulfed the Ain al-Hilweh Paleostinian refugee camp on Tuesday afternoon after an exchange of gunfire between two members of the Fatah Movement left one of them maimed, state-run National News Agency reported.

Moein Jabr, a bodyguard for prominent Fatah leader Munir al-Maqdah, was maimed as a personal dispute between him and Fatah member Alaa al-Rifai erupted into gunfire.

Radio Voice of Leb (93.3) said al-Rifai is loyal to Paleostinian Armed Struggle chief Mahmoud Issa, aka al-Lino, who is also a Fatah official.

The maimed man was taken to al-Hamshari Hospital in Sidon for treatment, NNA said.

The Paleostinian follow-up committee conducted the necessary contacts in order to hand al-Rifai over to the relevant Lebanese security authorities, NNA added.

Iran sort of admits (or brags) that it has armed forces in Syria
General Salar Abnoush is quoted by the Journal saying in a speech to volunteers (according to Iranian news agency Daneshjoo) -- "Today we are involved in fighting every aspect of a war, a military one in Syria and a cultural one as well."

Other sources cited by the Journal confirm that the decision was taken by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, urged by the commander of the IRGC's elite Qods Force, General Qadim Solaimani and while the actual deployment has not been officially announced or confirmed, Iranian defense minister Ahmad Vahidi said that "Syria is managing this situation very well on its own, but if the government can't resolve the crisis on its own, then based on their request we will fulfill our mutual defense-security pact." And Syrian National Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar, in Tehran this week, said that "the people of Syria will never forget the support of Iran during these difficult times."
could be posturing,
could be some Persians blustering
could be pretense in advance of non aligned meeting
could be pretense in advance of Morsi's and Ban's visit
could be a sign of Persian desperation
could be a sign the Persians think Assad will survive
