Lunatic kills two near Kandahar...
A man hired by a pro-U.S. Afghan militia to guard a checkpoint near the Kandahar air base began shouting threats against American troops, then shot two Afghans to death before militiamen killed him. Police Chief Gen. Mohammed Akram said U.S.-allied militiamen confronted the man Tuesday morning at the checkpoint, apparently after he started making the threats. "I came for my target. You are sons of Americans. I want to kill them and you," Akram quoted him as saying, before the man began shooting. Afghan fighters returned fire, killing the man, who has not been identified. The fighters then hung his body from a post for two hours before it was removed by authorities.
Sometimes all you can do is shake your head and say, "Those bastards are all crazy." Wonder what he was smoking before he came to work?

Minor explosions and shootouts around Kandahar...
An Afghan patrol sent out to find the enemy made contact, killing one and capturing two men, one of whom was wounded in the shooting. The two men are being held by coalition forces.
Wonder what he has to say?
The violence follows several potentially lethal attacks thwarted by authorities in recent days. "We don't know who is responsible," Police Chief Gen. Mohammed Akram said. "The government has many enemies." Police have said in the past they suspect Taliban members are working together with members of the radical Muslim group Hizb-e-Islami, headed by former prime minister Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, to destabilize the new government.
That'd be my first suspicion, too. Wonder where ol' Gulbuddin might be these days?
On Tuesday, police found two missiles aimed at the municipal stadium where 20,000 to 30,000 people have been attending sports exhibitions and musical performances. Akram said the missiles, each about a yard long, were discovered in an orchard two miles outside the city after a farmer alerted police about a suspicious man in the area. The fuse had been lit when police arrived, he said.
A crowd is just something to shoot rockets at...
On Sunday, a would-be bomber was killed when the homemade explosive he was making detonated just before midnight, police said. A second man was wounded and remains in police custody at a local hospital, police said.
And I wonder what he has to say? Usually the survivor is just an "innocent bystander," somebody that just stopped by to borrow a cup of sugar, when suddenly this rocket this guy had in the living room, y'see, it just goes off for no reason...
The small blast occurred just outside the home of Gov. Gul Agha Sherzai, which was empty at the time. The case is under investigation.
Gul Agha's a desirable target, the weakest of the warlords...
Earlier Sunday, police arrested a man who was hiding 110 pounds of Russian-made TNT and dynamite in a vendor's pushcart in the western part of the city.
"Hot dawgs! Burgers! Ice cream! Dynamite! Get 'em right here!"

#1  After the World Wars and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, peoples were mainly interested in peaceful national development. Afghanis want beligerant tribal destruction. President Kharzai doesn't even trust his own people enough to employ them as bodyguards. Why subsidize this social idiocy?

Axis of Evil
Abu Nidal hit was a warning?
High-level sources close to Chairman Yasser Arafat have confirmed that the killing of Abu Nidal (Sabri al-Banna) was a warning from Iraqi President Saddam Hussein to resume the war against Israel "with full vigor" or face the same. Arafat made moves in that direction as soon as the message came through, with probes at Israeli targets on August 20th.
That means that at this moment Sammy is the driver of the intifada. We've been looking for his connection with al-Qaeda, while we've been ignoring his much more obvious connection with the Paleostinians...
Saddam has been forced to take the initiative against the U.S. His available funds have been dwindling, while his expenses have been soaring with preparations for war, such as the acquisition of spare parts and the purchase of new early-warning radars from Ukraine.
The pressure Bush is applying here isn't the most glamorous, but it worked for Reagan against the Soviet Union. Better to avoid war entirely if you can spend them into collapse...
Abu Nidal was allegedly found dead in his apartment on August 20, 2002. A Palestinian newspaper reported he had been dead for three days. Western media, based on initial translations, called the death was an "apparent suicide". The original Arabic text actually described it as a "self-caused" death.
That's where you're surrounded by hard boys and rather than sticking your hands up, you whip out a rod, hollering something like "You'll never take me alive, coppers!" And they don't.
Since Abu Nidal died of multiple gunshot wounds, it was apparent that his death was likely not a suicide.
Not unless he was a really bad shot, really determined, and at some point was standing behind himself...
There seemed little evidence that Abu Nidal had actually done anything specific against Saddam, but rather was used to demonstrate that no matter how high-profile a revolutionary icon he was, Saddam could kill him at will.
I thought that bit about being in contact with the Kuwaitis was pretty lame. Even if he'd gone free-lance, the available market for his organization has actually dwindled. Unless it was at the most clandestine of all possible level, it didn't include the Kuwaitis, and probably not even the Syrians. The reports that Abu Nidal had terminal cancer and was on constant pain meds would be an argument in favor of suicide, except for the multiple gunshot wounds. But since he was on his way to the boneyard anyway, Sammy would likely have considered his departure from this vale of tears as more profitable if it could be used as a lesson to someone, rather than letting it occur in the natural course of events.
Abu Nidal did know a lot about the Iraqi connection with terrorist groups, almost certainly including al-Qaida.
But I don't think that counted for much. He was an idea whose time had come and then gone, his organization no longer a major player in the Middle East. Who was going to take him in, regardless of what he had to trade? His elimination would carry a greater return than the cost of keeping him...
First news of the death emerged through Ramallah, Chairman Arafat’s headquarters city, not in Baghdad. Iraqi confirmation came on August 20th, when Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz confirmed the "suicide" to foreign journalists. The real "message" was to Arafat and his team not to be tempted by Western pressures to move toward a peaceful settlement of the Arab-Israeli dispute.
Or even toward relative peace. Sammy can't afford it at this moment. It sound like someone — maybe Big Achmed and the boys — brought the news from Baghdad, along with a more definite statement of the warning...
President Bush called an unusual meeting at his ranch in Crawford, Texas, on August 20th. Among the attendees was Vice President Cheney. Occasions when the President and the Vice President are in the same location have been very rare since September 11th. Also present were Condoleeza Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, and other senior national security figures. The cover story was that the meeting was to discuss defense planning, which is probably an accurate statement that does not convey the full significance of the discussions. There have so far been no leaks of details of the discussions to Congress, nor were Congressional representatives included in the meeting.
And on the same day a group of Iraqis occupied the Berlin embassy, jogging the national elbow. That must have complicated matter still further.
The White House team probably gathered to work out a united position on Afghanistan and Iraq before meeting with Congressional leaders. Bush has said hhe would not attack Iraq before the November elections. There are factors mitigating against that promise and trying to rush events, however. Collusion — willing or unwilling — between Saddam and Arafat will increase that pressure.
There are the usual nay-sayers explaining that it's impossible to win against Sammy. The Archdruid of Canterbury's against it. Henry Kissinger's not enthused. Labour is pushing for the Brits to stay out. The Canucks don't want to help. Germany's agin it. Russia's trying to do business as usual with Baghdad. And the Soddies and Iranians, staring into the pit, are frothing against it. Given the short national attention span and the enthusiastic support he gets from Congress, Bush stands a chance of losing his momentum and seeing (genuine) public support melt away into apathy.
There are countervailing pressures to do something before that time, probably in October. The White House's concern now is with the credibility of the alternatives to the Ba'ath regime in Baghdad.
Which leads to the question of what the opposition has actually being doing all this while?
Two Palestinians and an Israeli soldier were killed in separate incidents on August 20th, the same day the IDF withdrew from Bethlehem in the implementation of the "Gaza First" plan. Israeli troops raided Tulkarem refugee camp in the northern West Bank, sparking clashes in which one Palestinian militant was killed and at least three other people were wounded. Issam Jayusi, 27, a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, was killed in one exchange.
Natural occurrences? Or have the Paleos gotten the word to jack it up? Sometimes it's hard to tell. If there's a booming in the next couple days with heavy casualties, that'll clinch it...
We can expect to see the Arab-Israeli confict escalate as Arafat complies with the diktat from Baghdad. At that same time, Iraq is trying to engineer a situation in which any attack on Saddam will result in a wide-scale Arab-Western war. The Iraqis have significant numbers of agents working in the PA territories, and may be the driving force in continuing the Arab-Israeli conflict.
I'm actually not too sure about that — I'd have said, yesterday anyway, that Iran was the driver, through Hamas and Islamic Jihad. But nobody asked me who drives al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades...
Just as the US as been attempting to build consensus among its allies, Iraq has been working to line up its own allies and assets for the conflict. Saddam is attempting to regain the intiative in the confrontation, and may actually be working to bring matters to a head sooner because of the financial pressure it is under. Forcing the U.S. to act prematurely could result in failure to reach the objectives set out. If a non-fatal and indecisive engagement can be engineered before November, the results could show in the elections, and Bush could emerge too weak to actually mount a full-scale campaign.
The above is a paraphrase of a slightly longer article in a defense periodical. My thanks to the person who sent it to me!

#1  Why would this serve as a warning? Abu-nidal and Yasser were bitter enemies, wouldnt Yasser be doing the endzone dance when he heard this news?

I did notice the glee on the voice of Bush this morning when this issue was brought up and he seem to intimate that this was an asassination.

The scuttlebutt this morning was that it was Mossad. So, in recent history, we've got Qusay geting a hollywood wound, the media acendancy of something called the 'Iraqi oppostion" Bush getting tagged by the NYT for failing to attack al qaeada in northern iraq and now a washed up islamicowboy having a accident while cleaning his revolver.

All background noise or "S" wave before the quake?

Suicidal Nidal a 'secret agent'?
Palestinian guerrilla leader Abu Nidal put a pistol into his mouth and pulled the trigger when Iraqi security men went to his Baghdad apartment to arrest him, Iraq's intelligence chief said on Wednesday. Taher Jaleel al-Haboush, head of the intelligence service, told a news conference in Baghdad that Abu Nidal, one of the world's most wanted men, was about to be arrested for interrogation and put trial on charges of entering Iraq illegally when he committed suicide.
"Entering Iraq illegally"? They just noticed? He arrived on the Lusitania...
Haboush produced pictures of the bloodied and dying guerrilla, an array of forged passports and ID cards and pictures of a weapons arsenal found at Abu Nidal's apartment that including assault rifles, silencer-fitted pistols and eight booby-trapped suitcases.
Yup. That proves he was an Arab...
He said coded messages were also found at the apartment which showed that the guerrilla leader was on the payroll of an unnamed country.
Ahah! That's it! The insidious Fiji Islanders, bent on world domination, recruited Abu Nidal to carry out their nefarious schemes against Iraq...

Italians arrest four in plot to blow basilica...
Italian police arrested four Moroccans and an Italian who they say may have been planning to attack a Bologna basilica with a 15th-century fresco inside that depicts the Muslim prophet Muhammad in hell, being devoured by demons. Prosecutor Paolo Giovagnoli said the five men were arrested Monday in the church itself, San Petronio Basilica, and were accused of criminal association with the aim of terrorism.
Pardon me, while I explain the obvious:
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE STINKIN' FRESCO, STAY THE HELL OUT OF THE CHURCH!

Feds put out alert for Soddy Bad Guy...
The FBI is urging law enforcement agencies worldwide to be on the lookout for a Saudi man identified nearly a year after the Sept. 11 attacks as a suspected associate of the hijackers. The bulletin issued Tuesday night sought the immediate arrest of Saud A.S. al-Rasheed, 21, of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The FBI said the bulletin was based on information developed over the past few days, and it warned police that al-Rasheed should be considered armed and dangerous. "Al-Rasheed's current whereabouts are unknown," the FBI bulletin said. "Al-Rasheed is suspected to be associated with the September 11, 2001 hijackers."
Wonder how? They're dead and he isn't...
Two senior law enforcement officials, who spoke only on condition of anonymity, said Tuesday night that al-Rasheed's picture was found among pictures of several hijackers in materials obtained overseas some time ago and recently reviewed at the FBI. The materials were included on a computer CD-ROM, the officials said. The officials said they did not know how long the government possessed the information before making the discovery but said the bulletin was issued out of an abundance of caution.
So he could be associated with them in any kind of way — perhaps the boy they left behind. I love these detailed descriptions...

Fake ID artist plans innocent plea
A man who went to Egypt last month while being investigated for allegedly providing fake IDs to two of the Sept. 11 hijackers returned to the United States voluntarily, his lawyer said Wednesday. Mohamed el-Atriss plans to plead innocent at his initial court appearance on state charges, scheduled for Friday in Paterson, said the lawyer, Hassen Abdellah.
"I mean, the guy's an Arab, y'know? Fake IDs are a cultural thing. You wouldn't understand, but take my words for it..."

U. of South Fla. Asks to Dump al-Arian...
University of South Florida officials filed a complaint Wednesday asking a court if it can fire a tenured Palestinian professor accused of having terrorist ties.
"Tenured? Nope, nope. Can't fire 'im. Y'haveta wait 'til he dies..."
The professor, Sami Al-Arian, who has lived in the United States since 1975, has never been charged with a crime and denies any connection to terrorists. He has been on paid leave since last fall when he was quizzed on Fox News Channel about tapes from the late 1980s and early 1990s in which he said "Death to Israel," in Arabic.
Among other things. Israel sez he's one of the founding members of the board of directors of Islamic Jihad. The current head of Islamic Jihad also used to teach at U. of South Florida, when he was head of al-Arian's World and Islam Studies Enterprise, and was sponsored by al-Arian.
"I believe that Dr. Al-Arian has abused his position at the university and is using academic freedom as a shield to cover improper activities," USF President Judy Genshaft said Wednesday.
Y'might say that...
Al-Arian said he never advocated violence and that his words were a statement against Israeli occupation. "It's still a case of academic freedom," Al-Arian said Wednesday. "It's just an indication of how politicized the university has become."
Academic freedom is apparently the new first refuge of a scoundrel...

India-Pakistan
Perv amends Pak constitution...
President Gen. Pervez Musharraf unilaterally amended the Pakistani constitution Wednesday, granting himself sweeping powers — including the right to dissolve parliament — and extending his term in office. Other amendments formalized an additional five years in office for Musharraf that he won in a controversial referendum in April. He also gave the military a formal role in governing the nation for the first time by setting up a National Security Council that would oversee elected rulers — and include military officials. "Pakistan is passing through a very crucial transitional period," Musharraf told reporters. "We are taking Pakistan from democratic dictatorship to elected democracy. I want to introduce a sustainable democratic order."
That's what he's been trying for. But...
Critics claimed the changes were a blow to the very democracy that Musharraf promised to restore by holding elections Oct. 10 for the national parliament and provincial legislatures. "We don't believe that an individual or group has the right to amend the constitution," said Raza Rabbai of the opposition Pakistan People's Party, led by former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. "This is the sole prerogative of the parliament."
PPP was the very model of unrestrained corruption while it was in power...
"Musharraf has grabbed all the power and the next prime minister will be helpless," said Nawabzada Nasrullah Khan, head of the opposition Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy.
ARD is the umbrella group for all the anti-Perv parties. They can be expected to bitch. Neither of the parties cited is really representative. The question is, what does the average Pak voter think?

PFLP head's little brother iced...
Israeli undercover forces shot and killed Mohammed Saadat, brother of Ahmed Saadat, leader of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Minutes after the soldiers stormed the house late Tuesday, Mohammed Saadat's bullet-riddled body lay on the ground behind the building. The Israeli military said the force intended to arrest Saadat, but that he opened fire, wounding two soldiers. Other troops killed Saadat. The statement said Mohammed Saadat was an activist in the PFLP. "Mohammed Saadat was not an innocent man. He was wanted, a senior fugitive, and he was wanted for his own actions and not only for his brother's," the chief army spokeswoman, Brig. Gen. Ruth Yaron, told Israel Army Radio.
My prediction: PFLP will vow revenge, any time now. (Yawn!) Okay, so it doesn't take a 3-digit IQ to predict that...

IDF blows two Gaza apartment buildings...
Israeli troops backed by tanks and helicopters blew up a five-story and a six-story building in Khan Younis in what the army said was an operation to prevent gunmen from firing on nearby Jewish settlements. A 24-year-old Palestinian was killed when he was struck in the head and back by shrapnel, hospital officials said. The explosion also damaged eight nearby smaller homes, making them uninhabitable, Khan Younis municipal officials said. In all, 100 people were made homeless — 80 had lived in the smaller homes and 20 in the apartment blocs. The two apartment buildings had been largely abandoned in recent months after coming under frequent fire during Israeli raids.
Paleostinian social services should be kicking in any time now to help them find new housing and get back on their feet...

Those big bad Israelis keep shooting up apartment buildings for no good reason.

I am sick and tired of the attempt by the Palestinians - with the active complicity of the media - to play on the heartstrings of the world (the poor Palesteeenians made homeless by the big bad Israelis) while they simulatneously violate every standard of human behavior.

#2  Palestinian Authority social services might be able to help if Israel did not blow up the Palestinian's business tax base or if they provided the tax revenue they owe to the Palestinian Authority. The only social services that will help will be from HAMAS. Stupid move, Israel; move gasoline for the fire. More suicide bombers for Israeli markets.

Five Paleos arrested in Jerusalem university bombing...
A Palestinian house painter employed by Jerusalem's Hebrew University has been arrested on suspicion he planted a bomb at the student cafeteria that killed nine people, including five Americans, last month. The suspect was part of a 15-member cell run by the Islamic militant group Hamas, the officials said. Five members of the cell have been arrested, including four Palestinian residents of Jerusalem.
Where are the rest of them?
The house painter was identified as Mohammed Oudeh, a resident of the Silwan neighborhood of east Jerusalem. Oudeh and the other Jerusalem residents carry Israeli identity cards that allow them free movement in Israel. Oudeh received the explosives from accomplices in Ramallah. On the night before the attack, he jumped over the university's fence, and hid the explosives under a bush. The next morning, he walked through the main gate with his employee's permit, picked up the bomb and planted it in the cafeteria. He then left, and detonated the explosives with a cellphone from a distance.
Real nice fellow, isn't he? He probably said, "G'morning" to some of the people he was about to blow up as he came in...
The next day, Oudeh was called in to work by his unsuspecting boss, an Israeli contractor.
And he probably whistled while he worked...
The cell was uncovered Saturday, as three of its members were on their way to pick up a bomb left hidden on the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem highway to use in another attack.
'Cause attacking people is what they do, y'know?

Southeast Asia
Abu Sayyaf kidnaps Avon ladies...
Abu Sayyaf guerrillas staged their first kidnappings since U.S. troops arrived to back a crackdown on the group, abducting at least six people who were selling Avon cosmetics door to door in a remote village.
Ofergawdsake! What's next? The ice cream man?
Philippine troops responded by shelling suspected hideouts of the gang.
Why didn't they shell 'em before they kidnapped anybody?
Jolo police chief Col. Ahiron Ajirim said two men with pistols stopped a vehicle carrying the cosmetics sellers and forced them out Tuesday afternoon. He said the driver was left behind in the rural area of Jolo island, about 600 miles south of Manila. Ajirim said the driver later identified one kidnapper as Muin Maulod Sahiron, a nephew of local Abu Sayyaf leader Radullan Sahiron.
Just can't seem to give up the ol' family business, I guess...
Officials initially reported that eight salespeople had been kidnapped, but two of them — the only Muslims and local residents in the group — showed up at their homes Wednesday, saying they had not been held. Police said they were investigating. Ajirim said six of the victims were from Zamboanga, the biggest city in the region, but were staying at a local inn and selling Avon products on Jolo island. Two women in their 40s and a 21-year-old man registered at the inn with the same last name and are likely related. A police report said the six were all Jehovah's Witnesses but said police found no evidence they were trying to evangelize in the predominantly Muslim area. The other two, Nidzmalin Sulayman and her husband Boyet, were acting as guides.
I hope they're evangelizing the hell out of them now, though. Six or seven issues of The Watchtower, a few liesurely hours of heart-to-heart chatting, and Muin will be buying a suit...
