#3  Not necessarily, jpal. In those days holding a cigarette was considered a necessary fashion accessory — and at parties the addition of a glass of alcohol. My mother relates that she would start the evening holding an unlit cigarette and a glass of white wine — both still untouched when she fetched her wrap at the end of the night.

#4  I remember a line in an old noir crime novel, some character saying "That kid's never held a weed in his life." Which is to say, affecting smoking behavior unconvincingly.

So, yeah, it was a thing, going way back.

-Lurid Crime Tales-
Federal agents make huge seizure of fentanyl in Arizona, enough to kill every American plus
Every fentanyl seizure, the result of China’s modern Opium War against the U.S., which provides Mexican narco-fangs with the basis with their so-profitable product, seems to be enough to kill everyone in America. How is it that so many still live? Of course, none of this would be a problem, had not the Biden administration not actively worked to leave the nation’s borders undefended to invasion of all sorts.
[JustTheNews] The operations occurred from March 6 to May 8 at four ports of entry and at two checkpoints.

With an unknown volume of fentanyl and other drugs pouring through the southern border between ports of entry in Arizona, federal agents recently seized enough fentanyl to kill more than 450 million people at several ports of entry and checkpoints.

Homeland Security Investigations, U.S. Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations-Tucson Field Office agents working through “Operation Blue Lotus,” and Border Patrol Tucson and Yuma Sector agents working through “Operation Four Horsemen” seized substantial amounts of methamphetamine and over a ton of fentanyl. The operations occurred from March 6 to May 8 at four ports of entry and at two checkpoints.

With two milligrams considered a lethal dose, one ton of fentanyl, or 2,000 pounds, is enough to kill 453,592,400 people.

The operations’ success was “attributed to the federal, state and local partners that spent countless hours not just by responding to port calls but assisting HSI with seizures throughout Arizona,” Department of Homeland Security Investigations Arizona Special Agent in Charge Scott Brown said when announcing the bust. “Drugs, but especially fentanyl, are decimating communities. But together and with education, we all can make a significant impact in curbing the senseless deaths associated with the sale of these deadly drugs,” he said.

As a result of their efforts, county attorneys are prosecuting alleged offenders and nine cases were referred for federal prosecution. Among the federal cases, those charged allegedly attempted to smuggle drugs into the U.S. at ports of entry or made it through and were stopped at checkpoints. Or they picked up drugs from others who made it across the border undetected and were caught at checkpoints. The drivers were all heading north, authorities said. Single vehicles stopped held enough fentanyl to kill tens of millions of people.

At the DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, a driver and passenger were apprehended for attempting to smuggle 156 packages of pills that field-tested positive for fentanyl hidden in their vehicle. Weighing over 200 pounds, the pills were enough to kill over 45.3 million people.

Also at the DeConcini POE, another driver, accompanied by a minor child, was apprehended after 65 packages that field-tested positive for fentanyl were found hidden in the vehicle. Weighing nearly 103 pounds, the drugs were enough to kill 23.3 million people.

Also in Nogales, another driver was apprehended for attempting to smuggle 236 packages that field-tested positive for fentanyl. Weighing over 415 pounds, they were enough to kill over 94.1 million people.

At the Mariposa Port of Entry in Nogales, a driver was apprehended after agents found 73 packages that field tested positive for fentanyl hidden in the quarter panels and seats of the vehicle. Weighing over 119 pounds, they were enough to kill 27 million people.

Also at the Mariposa Port, another driver and passenger were apprehended after agents found 588 packages hidden in their vehicle that field-tested positive for fentanyl. Weighing nearly 163 pounds, they were enough to kill 73.8 million people.

At the Lukeville Port of Entry, a driver with two minor children in her vehicle was apprehended after officers found 32 packages that field-tested positive for fentanyl hidden inside the vehicle. Weighing over 73 pounds, they were enough to kill 16.5 million people.

At the San Luis Port of Entry, another individual, also with minors in the vehicle, was apprehended after 201 packages of suspected drugs were found hidden in the vehicle doors. They included 131 packages that field-tested positive for fentanyl. Weighing nearly 85 pounds, they were enough to kill 38.5 million people.

At a checkpoint near Amado, another driver and her passenger were apprehended. Agents found a trap door in the vehicle, which led to a hidden compartment where 114 bundles that field-tested positive for fentanyl were hidden. Weighing over 30 pounds, they were enough to kill nearly 7 million people.

At a checkpoint near Wellton, a driver was apprehended after agents found 16 vacuum-sealed packages containing small blue pills hidden inside the vehicle’s tailgate and in a spare tire that field-tested positive for fentanyl. Weighing over 137 pounds, they were enough to kill over 31.2 million people.

Federal agents working with the Arizona Department of Public Safety also interdicted crates of .50-caliber ammunition bound for Mexico. As law enforcement agents have explained to The Center Square, people and drugs are smuggled north into the U.S.; weapons, cash and other contraband are smuggled south.

Chief Patrol Agent of the Yuma Sector Patricia McGurk-Daniel said, “The success of the Four Horsemen operation was due to the collaborative efforts and teamwork of multiple agencies.” She said she was “especially proud of the Yuma Sector Border Patrol agents who worked tirelessly during this operation to take deadly drugs off our streets and out of the communities we proudly serve.”

West Virginia man arraigned in fatal shooting of state trooper
[NYPOST] A suspect in the fatal shooting of a West Virginia state police officer was arraigned Saturday on a first-degree murder charge.Timothy Kennedy, 29, was arraigned by video in Mingo County Magistrate Court. Kennedy of the Mingo County community of Beech Creek, near Matewan, was being held without bond in the Southwestern Regional Jail.

Jail records didn’t indicate whether Kennedy had an attorney who could comment on the charge.

Dozens of coppers had searched for Kennedy for hours. He was arrested in a stolen vehicle Friday night at a law enforcement checkpoint, news outlets reported.
In the photo at the link it looks like he fell down the stairs a few times...
Earlier Friday, Sgt. Cory Maynard and two troopers had responded to a complaint of a shooting at a home and were fired at when they arrived, state police said in a statement. Maynard was shot and taken to a hospital in Logan.

Taliban’s Fatal Bullets Claim Young Life, Injure Uncle in Balkh Province
[8am] Local sources in Balkh province have reported that Taliban
...Arabic for students...
fighters shot and killed a young man while injuring his uncle in Mazar-e-Sharif city, the center of the province.

According to the sources, the incident occurred on Saturday, June 3, near the Band-e Amir Hotel in the 9th security district of Mazar-e-Sharif.

The Taliban targeted Yasin with gunfire while he was driving a car, accompanied by his father and uncle. They had fled after a physical altercation with one of their friends during a wedding ceremony.

As per the sources, the Taliban fighters have also detained the father and injured uncle of the dear departed individual.

Sources in Balkh province state that this is not the first time Taliban fighters have opened fire on civilians in the province without conducting any investigation. In the past, several individuals have been targeted and shot without any apparent reason by members of this group.
“Know yourselves conquered for our pleasure, O ye peasants!”
In the most recent incident, which took place last year, eight individuals were killed in Mazar-e-Sharif as a result of Taliban gunfire on a car.

Mysterious Poisoning: 70 Students and 2 Teachers Fall Victim in Girls’ Schools in Sar-e Pul
[8am] Local sources in Sar-e Pul have reported that approximately 70 male and female students from grades one to six, along with two female teachers, have mysteriously fallen victim to poisoning in the Sancharak district of this province.

Sources confirmed on Sunday, June 4, in an interview with Hasht-e Subh, that the affected children include 50 male and female students from the "Kabod Ab" secondary school and 20 students, along with two teachers, from the "Faizabad" girls’ school in this district.

According to one source, these two schools have a total of 120 and 250 students, respectively.

Although the details of this event are still unclear, some local sources claim that unidentified button men, who allegedly identify as Taliban
...Arabic for students...
fighters, were spotted in the area prior to the incident.

They state that early in the morning on Saturday, June 3, the students of these two schools were poisoned.

Meanwhile,
...back at the Hubba Hubba Club, Big Shirley was still trying to snatch Nunzio bald-headed. She was already halfway there...
health sources in the Sar-e Pul province have stated that they have not yet been able to identify any toxic substances in the bodies of the students.

Local Taliban officials have not commented on this matter concerning the Sar-e Pul province.

However,
a woman is only as old as she admits...
it is worth noting that last year, during protests, a number of female university students in Kabul were poisoned, but the poisoning of primary school students in the country is unprecedented.

Former Security Commander’s Son Arrested in Ghazni’s Qara-Bagh District
[8am] Local sources in Ghazni province have reported that the Taliban
...mindless ferocity in a turban...
have arrested the 13-year-old son of Ramazan Zirak, the former security commander of Qara-Bagh district in the previous government.
Thirteen is exactly the right age to start ‘em down the bacha bazi path, and the photo at the link shows a handsome young lad. With the added frisson of being the son of the enemy of the Taliban. What vile people they are, to be sure.
Sources from the province stated to Hasht-e Subh on Monday, June 4, that the Taliban detained this individual yesterday from Mr. Zirak’s home in Qara-Bagh.

Sources emphasize that the detained individual is currently being held in Taliban custody at the security command of this district.

According to sources, despite the repeated efforts of tribal elders, the Taliban have not yet released this child from captivity since yesterday.

The Taliban have also denied the family of this child permission to see him and have stated that he is under interrogation.

It should be noted that Mr. Ramazan Zirak left the country after the fall of the previous government, and his family resides in Qara-Bagh district.

Previously, the Taliban have consistently targeted and arrested family members of former government military personnel.

Daily Evacuation Brief June 5, 2023
[AfghanDigest] LAST 24 HOURS
  • SCHOOL POISONINGS IN SAR-E PUL – A few reports have come in from the Sancharak District where approximately 70 young students and 2 female teachers have become sick. Local residents believe the students and teachers were poisoned and say that most began to report feeling unwell on Saturday (3 June). Provincial health officials stated that they have not been able to trace any substances that may have caused the sickness. However, the officials admitted that there were ‘gaps’ in the testing equipment and personnel that would normally be able to identify potential toxic agents.

  • MAJOR RELOCATION PROGRAM SLATED FOR REFUGEES ALONG THE DURAND LINE – In a move to ease worries in Islamabad, the Taliban has said it plans to relocate as many as 70,000 people living near the Durand Line to other Provinces in the country. If the Taliban follows through, it would likely be the largest social engineering program it has undertaken since coming to power. Critics of the plan point out that it is in line with the Taliban’s goal of diversifying Districts and Provinces where Tajik and Uzbek majorities live. Pakistan will likely greet the news with gratitude but the logistics involved with such a move could prolong any actual resettlement.

  • 4.6 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE STRIKES IN BADAKHSHAN – The earthquake struck near the Provincial capital (Fayzabad) yesterday morning at a depth of 150km. Residents of Kabul felt the quake but no damage has been reported nor were there reports of any casualties. This quake follows a 4.2 magnitude one that struck a day prior between Fayzabad and Kabul.

  • TALIBAN PAY ALL THE ELECTRIC BILLS – The Central Bank announced it had made good on electricity payments to regional countries and has signed a new agreement for the importation of 5.8 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity through the end of the year. Many observers had expected the Taliban to default on some of the unpaid bills. However, revenue has been steady and the regime appears to be prioritizing essential services after the unpopular power outages experienced over the winter months.

  • REGIME SPURNS IRANIAN OFFER OF BORDER SECURITY TRAINING – Iran had extended an offer to provide training to border security personnel after the deadly skirmishes took place in May. A source in Kabul said the Iranian offer was considered but some in the Ministry of Defense objected to allowing Iranian military/police personnel to have access to its facilities and especially to the communications equipment.

US military kills senior Al-Shabaab commanders in Somalia
[Garowe] For the second time within a week, the US Africa Command has confirmed firing drones in al-Shabaab
...... the personification of Somali state failure...
villages within Somalia, with the latest killing of three al-Shabaab commanders in interior parts of Jubaland where the second phase of operations against the group is set to start.

According to the US Africa Command, in a statement, the army conducted the Arclight airstrike
...KABOOM!...
following a request by the federal government of Somalia. The airstrike was conducted at Wayanta neighbourhoods in Jubaland, approximately 60 kilometers southwest of Kismayo
...a port city in the southern Lower Juba province of Somalia, at the extreme southern end of the country (always assuming Somalia can be called a country). It is the commercial capital of the autonomous Jubaland region....
The command’s initial assessment is that no civilians were maimed or killed, the command said, as an assurance of civilian protection as enshrined in international law. The US Africa Command has been playing an integral role in pursuing the al-Shabaab group within Somalia.

#1  Aside from honing the skills of the personnel involved in this, and ignoring the costs of maintaining the entire support/logistics/weapons system associated with wacking another Al-Shabaab "Commander", do you think this had ANY deterrent on Al-Shabaab cadre or in any way lessened their threat to the U.S.? This is meaningless, and a sample of the massively expensive wack-a-mole program for AFRICOM, who are pretending that Somalia has a functional government and that wacking people at their request does anything to serve actual American interests. We have been in Somalia since 2007 and, as a Google search reveals:
"How much aid does the US send to Somalia?
US Foreign Aid to Somalia

Since 2006, the U.S. has given more than $3 billion in humanitarian aid and $253 million in developmental aid since 2011. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) allocated $411 million in December 2022 to respond to the drought and prevent famine in Somalia."Feb 28, 2023" Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. #5  As far as I can tell, jpal, emir just means leader. It can mean the leader of a platoon or the leader of an army without apparent differentiation.

This is not unique to Arabic — my mother was not sent to a concentration camp by the Nazis when she was seventeen because her Dutch papers showed her work category as “Leiterin” (leader) at a Montessori school. In German nomenclature, a school Leiter/Leiterin is the headmaster/headmistress, whereas in the Montessori program all the adults lead the students to work with learning materials on their own — learning as unstructured student-oriented self discovery rather than teacher-oriented structured lectures followed by homework and tests. The Nazi captain was terribly impressed by what he interpreted as my mother’s incredibly precocious achievement that he allowed her to be left in place until a later round of round-ups. She went into hiding immediately thereafter.

Al-Shabaab targets passenger bus in Kenya
[Garowe] Somalia-based al-Shabaab
...... an Islamic infestation centering on Somalia attempting to metastasize into Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and similar places, all ofwhich have enough problems without them...
murderous Moslems on Sunday targeted a public vehicle ferrying passengers in Mandera County, multiple sources said, but the attack was quickly repulsed by hawk-eyed security officers manning the dangerous Moyale-Mandera Road in the far north.

According to reports, the vehicle was traveling from Banisa to Mandera town and the attack took place between Olla and Lanfin townships in Mandera County. This is the first time in as many months the murderous Moslems are targeting public service vehicles in the region.

The attack, reports indicate, left three people critically injured with security forces managing to neutralize the attackers. The attack comes just a few hours after Interior and National Security Minister Kithure Kindiki visited the neighboring Garissa county where he announced a government strategy to neutralize the group.

As part of government efforts to secure the region, he said, Kenya will pump about $200 million towards the modernization of weapons in the security sector. Most security officers are using archaic weapons even with the knowledge that al-Shabaab has been using sophisticated weapons.

In February 2020, al-Shabaab carried out two attacks in the same vicinity including an attack on the Moyale bus liner killing three people. This attack comes amid local concern about the existence of areas where al-Shabaab trains recruits. Many locals are reportedly afraid to speak up for safety reasons.

Kenya has increased surveillance along the Kenya-Somalia border which is set to be reopened in phases starting this month. Already, the Kenya Defence Forces have established 14 Forward Operating Bases which will be used along the border to monitor and respond to any danger posed by the turbans.

Armed clashes between tribes hit Shabwah province
[HODHODYEMENNEWS.NET] Armed festivities erupted on Sunday between two tribes after the killing of a citizen in the center of Ataq city, the provincial city of Shabwah province, eastern Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
, on the background of a tribal vendetta.

Local sources in the city said that tribal button men belonging to ’Al Abdullah bin Daha’ tribe shot a citizen named Bin al-Matnoun al-Marzqi from ’Al-Marazeeq’ tribe in Hunish Street, near the residence of the province’s governor loyal to the Saudi-led coalition, Awad Bin al-Wazir, and killed him on the spot.

Violent festivities broke out following al-Marzqi’s killing between gunnies of the two tribes in the al-Mawtana area near Ataq, according to the sources.

This comes as the UAE-affiliated factions have been stripping Shabwah rustics of their personal weapons since last week, in a proactive step to limit any tribal moves against the factions recruited from Dhalea and Yafea areas.

Europe
Germany: Police break up banned far-left protest in Leipzig
[DW] Left-wing protesters wanted to gather to protest a jail term given to Lina E., a leader of the Antifa group “Hammerbande”, for attacking neo-Nazis. Despite court bans, police first tried to accommodate the protest, but broke it up when officers came under attack.

Several coppers were maimed in the eastern German city of Leipzig on Saturday in festivities with left-wing protesters. Leipzig police front man Olaf Hoppe described the situation as "very dynamic," with "sometimes massive festivities here in the south of Leipzig."

He said that "roughly 1,500 people" turned up to the demonstration, even though several courts had refused to authorize it.

India-Pakistan
SIU investigating 40 terror cases in Kashmir
[GreaterKashmir
...a disputed territory lying between India and Pakistain. After partition, the Paks grabbed half of it and call it Azad (Free) Kashmir. The remainder they refer to as "Indian Occupied Kashmir". They have fought four wars with India over it, the score currently 4-0 in New Delhi's favor. After 72 years of this nonsense, India cut the Gordian knot in 2019, removing the area's special status, breaking off Ladakh as a separate state, and allowing people from other areas to settle (or in the case of the Pandits, to resettle) there....
] The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of J&K Police has been investigating 40 terror related cases in Kashmir and so far 58 involved persons have been arrested, a senior Police official said Sunday.

The terror-related cases being investigated by the anti-terror body are from various districts of Kashmir. Director General of Police (DGP) Dilbag Singh supervises the SIU.

The SIU has separate branches in every district that work under district Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). "We are investigating 40 cases," a senior Police official said.

He said that the SIU had so far attached seven residential houses linked to terrorism in Kashmir.

The senior Police official said that the SIU also arrested 58 persons linked to terrorism.

"These people were arrested during the investigations of terror related-cases," he said.

The senior Police officer said that most of these cases come under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

"One case is related to narco-terror," he said.

UA(P)A is an act to provide for the more effective prevention of certain unlawful activities of individuals and associations, and for dealing with terrorist activities, and for matters connected therewith.

Since its formation, the SIU has carried out frequent raids across Kashmir in terror related cases in synergy with paramilitary forces deployed in Kashmir.

J&K Police last year said that they would attach the property of those who "willfully" shelter terrorists.

In cases of the "forced entry" by murderous Moslems into houses, Police have put the onus on the house owners to "prove duress".

The DGP had ordered establishment of Special Investigation Units (SIUs) in Jammu and Kashmir in June last year for bringing out qualitative improvement in investigation of terror cases.

He had said that to bring about qualitative improvement in investigation of terror cases to ensure that it leads to successful prosecution and conviction, it was imperative that a dedicated officer was made the investigating officer of the cases.

The SIU officials said that they were at liberty to co-opt any officers or officials for the purpose of investigation of a particular case.

The concerned district SSP is making all the logistic support and providing manpower for the purpose of investigation and raids or searches available for the SIU.

Another senior Police officer said that the SIU was only investigating important and sensational cases of terror crime or narcotics.

"The cases which are being investigated by the SIU have been transferred to the anti-terror body by the DGP," he said. "When they require, the investigation units seek technical assistance from the prosecutors of the concerned Police formations so that no loopholes remain in the investigation which could benefit the accused persons during the trial."

Two soldiers martyred in North Waziristan gunbattle
[GEO.TV] Two soldiers of the Pakistain Army embraced martyrdom while two bad boyz were potted in a gunbattle in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s (KP) tribal district, the military’s media wing said on Sunday.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), an exchange of fire took place between troops and murderous Moslems in the North Wazoo district on Saturday.

Troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location and two Lions of Islam "were sent to hell, while injuring another two", it added.

The ISPR said weapons and ammunition were also recovered from the slain terrorists.

However,

district, having fought gallantly, embraced Shahadat [martyrdom], the military's media wing added.

Sanitisation of the area, it further said, is being carried out to eliminate any other murderous Moslems found in the area.

"Armed forces of Pakistain are determined to eliminate the menace of terrorism and such sacrifices of our brave soldiers further strengthen our resolve," the ISPR said.

A day earlier, two Pakistain Army soldiers were also martyred in a gunbattle with murderous Moslems in KP’s Bannu district.

The ISRP had said in a statement that two murderous Moslems were also killed in an exchange of fire in the Jani Khel area of the district. "Own troops effectively engaged the terrorists' location, resultantly two murderous Moslems were sent to hell."

CTD arrests six ‘militants’ of banned outfits in Punjab
[Dawn] The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) claimed on Saturday to have arrested six suspects belonging to different banned outfits during operations in different areas of Punjab.

According to the front man, the Punjab
1.) Little Orphan Annie's bodyguard
2.) A province of Pakistain ruled by one of the Sharif brothers
3.) A province of India. It is majority (60 percent) Sikh and Hindoo (37 percent), which means it has relatively few Moslem riots....

CTD conducted 39 intelligence based operations (IBOs) in different districts of the province, interrogating 40 suspects and arresting six Death Eaters allegedly affiliated with different banned outfits, recovering weapons, explosives and other prohibited materials from them.

Those arrested have been identified as Shoaib Rafiq, a member of the banned
...the word banned seems to have a different meaning in Pakistain than it does in most other places. Or maybe it simply lacks any meaning at all...
organization
Hizb-e-Tahrir, Muhammad Baqir Mehndi, a member of Sipah Muhammad Pakistain, two members of the Baloch Liberation Army — Zahir Shah and Muhammad Shahzad, Muhammad Afzal, a member of Jamaatul Ahrar
...A Pak Taliban splinter group that split off from the Mullah Fazlullah faction because it wasn't violent enough...
, and Asif, a member of Tehrik-e-Taliban

Pakistain, he said.
Goodness! Are any bad guys left in the area at all?
The front man says that 415 grams of kaboom, one hand grenade, one improvised bomb (IED bomb), six detonators, six feet safety fuse wire, two feet Prima Card, four prohibited books, 31 pamphlets of banned organization, nine stickers, two flags, a receipt book, three mobile phones and Rs49,680 in cash have been recovered from the suspected bad boys.

He says the Death Eaters had planned terrorist activities across the province and wanted to target important installations and religious places.

The police have registered five cases against the arrested suspects in Lahore, Gujranwala, DG Khan, Sahiwal and Rawalpindi and shifted them to an unknown location, he adds.

The front man adds that 238 combing operations were also conducted during this week with the help of local police and security agencies, checking 1,1041 persons and arresting 33 suspects. He says 28 FIRs were registered against the suspects and 20 prohibited items were recovered.

He says the CTD is diligently pursuing its goal of a "safe Punjab" and making all out efforts to put Death Eaters and other anti-state elements behind bars.

Southeast Asia
Filipino soldier, militants killed in southern Philippine clash
[BenarNews] A soldier and four Filipino turbans from the local arm of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
group have been killed in fierce fighting in the jungles of the southern Philippines, the military and police said Friday.

The men died during a firefight between a unit of the Army Scout Rangers and members of Daulah Islamiyah in the village of Piangologan, Lanao del Sur province, late Wednesday, Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza of the regional police said.

Three other soldiers were maimed in the clash and three young men recently recruited to the Moslem holy warrior group were also "rescued," he said.

"Daulah Islamiyah" means "Islamic State" in the local language. Its membership comprises fighters from several Filipino bad boy factions, including the Maute Group, which provided men and logistics during a five-month siege of Marawi by pro-IS fighters in 2017.
“Downsizing”.
The Marawi crisis was the biggest outbreak of violence attributed to IS in Southeast Asia, killing more than 1,200 bad boys, soldiers and civilians and leaving the city in ruins.

The turbans killed Wednesday belonged to a group that threatened to launch attacks last week in the area, security officials said.

Soldiers from the 7th and 9th Scout Ranger Company caught up with the Daulah Islamiyah fighters on May 31 after tracking them through jungle territory, Army front man Maj. Jairus Mark Mira said.
Sounds like a good time was had by all — except the dead guys, of course.
In the heavy fighting that followed, Private First Class Jemric Pol Contingo was killed and three soldiers maimed.
All honour to them — they fought the good fight.
An assortment of weapons were recovered from the dead bad boys, Mira said, though several men from the group escaped.

Maj. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete, commander of the 1st Infantry Division that oversees the area, sought on Friday to assure the public that troops were scouring the territory and the group would be unable to carry out further attacks.

"Government troops will not stop pursuing the local terrorist group until they are all neutralized," Nafarrete said in a statement.

The fighting happened days after military intelligence officials told BenarNews they had received reports that local DI leader Abu Zacharia — the IS emir for Southeast Asia — was preparing attacks in the region to avenge the capture of four of his comrades.
He succeeded Owaida Marohombsar (also known as Abu Dar), the leader of the Daulah Islamiyah-Maute Group who was killed in neighbouring Lanao del Norte province in March, 2019.
Abu Zacharia, who is also known as Jer Mimbantas and Faharudin Hadji Satar, survived a number of military operations in Lanao del Sur last year. He was part of the Maute group that seized Marawi in 2017, but escaped capture by authorities.

Little is known about him, except that he is a nephew of the late Alim Abdul Aziz Mimbantas, a ex-ranking leader in Lanao of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, a former rebel group based in the southern Philippines that signed a peace pact with the government and now controls an autonomous region.

US, British navies come to rescue of ship ‘harassed’ by Iran in Persian Gulf
[IsraelTimes] Revolutionary Guards forces on fast-attack boats accused of nearing merchant vessel traversing key Strait of Hormuz, sparking distress call amid ongoing fight over seized tankers

The US Navy said Monday its sailors and the United Kingdom Royal Navy came to the aid of a ship in the crucial Strait of Hormuz after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard "harassed" it.

Three fast-attack Guard vessels with armed troops aboard approached the unidentified merchant ship at a close distance Sunday afternoon, the US Navy said in a statement. It offered black-and-white images it said came from a US Navy Boeing P-8 Poseidon overhead, which showed three small ships close to the commercial ship.

50 jihadists, 168 family members repatriated from Syria to Iraq

-group jihadists and 168 Iraqi members of jihadist families were repatriated from Syria to Iraq on Saturday, an Iraqi official said.

Iraqi authorities "received 50 members of the Islamic State from the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)," said the source who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The SDF are the Kurds' de facto army in the area, and led the battle that dislodged Islamic State group fighters from the last scraps of their Syrian territory in 2019.

They will "be the subject of investigations and will face Iraqi justice," they added.

According to conflict monitor the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights they were detained in Hasakeh, northeast Syria.

Additionally, 168 relatives of IS-group members were repatriated from Syria's al-Hol camp to be relocated to al-Jadaa camp south of djinn-infested Mosul
... the home of a particularly ferocious and hairy djinn...
, the Iraqi official added, where they will undergo psychiatric treatment.

"Once we receive the assurances of their tribal leaders that they will not face reprisals, they will be sent home."

Al-Hol camp,
...sometimes spelt al-Hawl camp...
in Kurdish-controlled northeast Syria, is home to about 50,000 people including family members of suspected jihadists. Among them are displaced Syrians, Iraqi refugees as well as more than 10,000 foreigners originally from some 60 countries. Nearly half of the camp's population is under the age of 12.

Since May 2021, hundreds of families have been transferred from al-Hol to al-Jadaa in Iraq, with a number of those going on to flee.

In December 2021, Iraqi authorities announced plans to close al-Jadaa. But little progress has been made and the relocation of displaced people to their home regions has proven challenging and prompted opposition from local people.
