British forces searching for Al-Baghdadi in Libya
Yesterday it was Afghanistan — but in theory he has to be somewhere, and if in the meantime they find related jihadis, that would be good, too.

, is possibly hiding out in Libya after losing his so-called ’caliphate’ in Syria and Iraq, The Daily Express said on Sunday.

According to the publication, the British Royal Air Force is currently searching for the terrorist leader throughout the North African nation.

The report said British fighter jets, along with aircraft operated by Italian and US militaries, were carrying out round-the-clock sorties in search of the ABB, the code name being used to identify Baghdadi as a target. It said anyone killing or capturing the ISIS leader would receive $25million (£19million) as a bounty on his head.

The RAF jets are being scrambled from Waddington in Lincolnshire, in eastern England, to collate signals and intelligence on individuals and groups who might support the 48-year-old ISIS leader.

The British authorities allege that they have some ’reliable’ intelligence that the ISIS chief has escaped Baghouz in eastern Syria and moved on to Libya.

"It is reliable intel, but it needs to be verified," said a military source, adding, "the air component operation is delivering high-grade intelligence and we can map names and groups to people we known that have been or are part of ABB’s inner circle."

...a long, narrow country that fills the space between Nigeria and Chad on the northeast, CAR to the southeast. Prior to incursions by Boko Haram nothing ever happened there...
town of Goshi over the weekend, security sources and witnesses said Monday.

One assailant was killed, they said.

A group of about 100 men arrived in the town Saturday night, when most people were asleep, an inhabitant of Goshi told AFP.

The gang set alight 60 houses and 11 shops, as well as a church, according to local authorities.

Boko Haram's decade-long uprising to establish a hardline Islamic state in Nigeria's northeast, which has killed more than 27,000 people and left 1.8 million homeless, has spilled into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon.

On April 19, Boko Haram fighters torched a village elsewhere in Cameroon's Far North Region, killing 11 civilians in their sleep.

Arabia
The Latest: Norwegian Tanker's Hull Punctured off UAE Coast
[US News] DUBAI, UNITED ARAB Emirates (AP) ‐ The Latest on alleged sabotage of ships off the coast of the United Arab Emirates (all times local):

The owners of a Norwegian-flagged oil tanker say their vessel sustained a hole in its hull from "an unknown object" while off the coast of the United Arab Emirates, amid what Gulf officials describe as sabotage targeting ships there.
Oh Noes, Herb! Norway is playing into our Gulf of Tonkin V2.0!
Thome Ship Management said in a statement Monday that the MT Andrea Victory was still off the coast of Fujairah and was "not in any danger of sinking."

It said the rear section of the ship was hit by the object on Sunday.

It added its sailors were supporting local authorities and were conducting a full inspection of the vessel.

Saudi Arabia said earlier Monday that two of its oil tankers also were targeted in "sabotage operations" off the UAE coast, with one of them as it was en route to pick up Saudi oil to take to the United States.
Update from Iraqi News at 6:25 p.m. EDT:
Four fat merchantmen were targets of a sabotage attack near Fujairah port, just outside the Strait of Hormuz, on Sunday.

The UAE gave no further details about the ships’ nationalities but Soddy Arabia

confirmed that it owned two of them, while a Norwegian company said it had another. The fourth ship was reportedly UAE-flagged.

Initial US analysis shows Iran likely behind attack on Saudi oil tankers
[American Thinker] A preliminary U.S. assessment indicates Iran was likely behind the attack that caused "significant damage" to two Saudi oil tankers on Sunday, according to a new report.

A U.S. official told the Wall Street Journal that the early findings in the ongoing analysis show Iran was likely behind the attack that occurred near the Persian Gulf as the two vessels were attempting to head into the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi energy minister Khalid al-Falih announced the vessels were attacked on Sunday along with at least two other oil-industry vessels. He also said that one of the ships was traveling to a Saudi port in the Persian Gulf to load oil that would head to the U.S.

Few details were offered, but Saudi officials said the engine on the tanker called Al-Marzoqah caught fire, leading to an explosion.

The U.S. official declined to say what the initial assessment means for the U.S. and a potential response going forward. The State Department has so far refrained from saying whether Secretary of State Mike Pompeo believes Iran or its allies was behind the attack.

#8  About Iraq and Al Qaeda, Herb — that question was answerd over a decade ago:

Saddam's Terror Training Camps

January 16, 2006
[WeeklyStandard] THE FORMER IRAQI REGIME OF Saddam Hussein trained thousands of radical Islamic terrorists from the region at camps in Iraq over the four years immediately preceding the U.S. invasion, according to documents and photographs recovered by the U.S. military in postwar Iraq. The existence and character of these documents has been confirmed to THE WEEKLY STANDARD by eleven U.S. government officials.

The secret training took place primarily at three camps--in Samarra, Ramadi, and Salman Pak--and was directed by elite Iraqi military units. Interviews by U.S. government interrogators with Iraqi regime officials and military leaders corroborate the documentary evidence. Many of the fighters were drawn from terrorist groups in northern Africa with close ties to al Qaeda, chief among them Algeria's GSPC and the Sudanese Islamic Army. Some 2,000 terrorists were trained at these Iraqi camps each year from 1999 to 2002, putting the total number at or above 8,000. Intelligence officials believe that some of these terrorists returned to Iraq and are responsible for attacks against Americans and Iraqis. According to three officials with knowledge of the intelligence on Iraqi training camps, White House and National Security Council officials were briefed on these findings in May 2005; senior Defense Department officials subsequently received the same briefing.

The photographs and documents on Iraqi training camps come from a collection of some 2 million "exploitable items" captured in postwar Iraq and Afghanistan. They include handwritten notes, typed documents, audiotapes, videotapes, compact discs, floppy discs, and computer hard drives. Taken together, this collection could give U.S. intelligence officials and policymakers an inside look at the activities of the former Iraqi regime in the months and years before the Iraq war.

The discovery of the information on jihadist training camps in Iraq would seem to have two major consequences: It exposes the flawed assumptions of the experts and U.S. intelligence officials who told us for years that a secularist like Saddam Hussein would never work with Islamic radicals, any more than such jihadists would work with an infidel like the Iraqi dictator. It also reminds us that valuable information remains buried in the mountain of documents recovered in Afghanistan and Iraq over the past four years.

Nearly three years after the U.S. invasion of Iraq, only 50,000 of these 2 million "exploitable items" have been thoroughly examined. That's 2.5 percent. Despite the hard work of the individuals assigned to the "DOCEX" project, the process is not moving quickly enough, says Michael Tanji, a former Defense Intelligence Agency official who helped lead the document exploitation effort for 18 months. "At this rate," he says, "if we continue to approach DOCEX in a linear fashion, our great-grandchildren will still be sorting through this stuff."

Most of the 50,000 translated documents relate directly to weapons of mass destruction programs and scientists, since David Kay and his Iraq Survey Group--who were among the first to analyze the finds--considered those items top priority. "At first, if it wasn't WMD, it wasn't translated. It wasn't exploited," says a former military intelligence officer who worked on the documents in Iraq.

"We had boxloads of Iraqi Intelligence records--their names, their jobs, all sorts of detailed information," says the former military intelligence officer. "In an insurgency, wouldn't that have been helpful?"

#9  can we stop rehashing the Iraq/WMD thing?

Sure, the moment it becomes irrelevant.

Right now it seems very relevant. They lied us into a war. Now, we've got a casus belli to go to war with Iran. Probability of false flag: High. The timing is incredibly convenient. Remember the Gulf of Tonkin incident, which was also incredibly convenient?

a simple jingoistic NEO-CON!

Neo-cons were the ones who lied us into Iraq. Leaving aside the fact that overthrowing empires, toppling nobilities and religious proselytism aren’t evil per se, to be evil you need to be at least willing to murder innocents for personal gain. That immediately disqualifies you from being a ‘decent guy’. A decent father, wife or cook, maybe. But not a decent person.

Hundreds of thousands of innocents died in Iraq, a war started by neo-cons under false pretenses.

#10  Dan Darling, who was a moderator here while in college, submitted the above article to Rantburg. After he graduated he joined a national security consultant firm based on the work he had done here and elsewhere since high school, and disappeared from public view — a precocious young man. Mr. Darling also submitted this one in 2003, among others. The nexus between Saddam Hussein’s Iraq and Al Qaeda, among other jihadis groups, was a regular topic of interest in the early post-9/11 years here at Rantburg. You’ll need to go to the link to see where Mr. Darling and Fred commented on the original text:

About that smoking gun ...

This is a complete transcript of the Weekly Standard article that details US intelligence on the Iraq/al-Qaeda connection.
OSAMA BIN LADEN and Saddam Hussein had an operational relationship from the early 1990s to 2003 that involved training in explosives and weapons of mass destruction, logistical support for terrorist attacks, al Qaeda training camps and safe haven in Iraq, and Iraqi financial support for al Qaeda--perhaps even for Mohamed Atta--according to a top secret U.S. government memorandum obtained by THE WEEKLY STANDARD.
And there goes the "hyped intelligence" charge in regards to the Iraq/al-Qaeda connection. A lot of this stuff also comes from the early to late 1990s, long before Bush even thought of running for president.
The memo, dated October 27, 2003, was sent from Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Douglas J. Feith to Senators Pat Roberts and Jay Rockefeller, the chairman and vice chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. It was written in response to a request from the committee as part of its investigation into prewar intelligence claims made by the administration. Intelligence reporting included in the 16-page memo comes from a variety of domestic and foreign agencies, including the FBI, the Defense Intelligence Agency, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency. Much of the evidence is detailed, conclusive, and corroborated by multiple sources. Some of it is new information obtained in custodial interviews with high-level al Qaeda terrorists and Iraqi officials, and some of it is more than a decade old. The picture that emerges is one of a history of collaboration between two of America’s most determined and dangerous enemies.
Which would seem to annihilate the belief that secular and religious terrorist groups are incapable of collaboration. Why, it’s as outrageous as a right-wing American Republican president being in league with a left-wing British Labour prime minister! Their ideologies are completely incompatible.

#15  Possibly Herb will argue that the Weekly Standard articles were written by neocons, and to some extent that’s true. But we also had a lot of personal witnesses over the years of the points in question – one simply needs to read through the first 10 years of comments to find it. I will admit that reading through nearly two decades of archives is a valuable exercise exactly to remember things since forgotten, but it does take a bit of time.

#16  So, nationalists like Saddam and Islamists like Al-Qaeda were actually best buddies? Who knew?

So we were right to invade Iraq all along? Is that the point here?

Jesus Christ, I had no idea Rantburg was so neo-con. I thought Rantburgers were good people. But here you all are, making excuses for warmongers who lied us into a war we had no business getting into.

So, you're in favor of attacking Iran, too? How about Venezuela? What about any other country that our neo-cons want to attack? War, war, more war is that it?

I'd think that when you came to the realization that you were killing innocent people, you might have a "My God, what have I done?" moment. But I guess not. More war!

#18  So, nationalists like Saddam and Islamists like Al-Qaeda were actually best buddies? Who knew?

We knew, Herb. You would know, too, if you scrolled through the archives. Or google “Salman Pak AND Al Qaeda” or” Iran AND Al Qaeda”. Saddam Hussein trained a great many jihadi terror group personnel — and non-jihadi as well — at Salman Pak. Al Qaeda was only one of many organizations that sent cadres to learn the basics of hijacking airplanes, making bombs, document forgery, and all the other skills necessary to wage a covert war, as well as sending them back for advanced courses in biological and chemical weapons and such. Saddam Hussein saw them all as tools to be used against various external targets, just as the whiskey-swilling generals of Pakistan keep all sorts of domestic and international jihadi groups on the payroll to use against India, Afghanistan and, incidentally, America and Europe — not to mention the occasional domestic target.

So we were right to invade Iraq all along? Is that the point here?

Low hanging fruit, as the war had been ongoing since President George H.W. Bush. In order to end the current expansionist jihad, we needed to eradicate support from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Iran (where half of Osama bin Laden’s family, Al Qaeda’s Shura council, and military commanders were sheltered after they fled from Tora Bora), and Saudi Arabia — Kuwait and Qatar being highly secondary. Unfortunately, my dear, this is the third anti-totalitarian world war — the first ended up being against the racial fascism of Germany’s Nazis and Japan (because Stalin chose to side with the Allies for the duration), the second against the economic socialism of the Soviet Union and Communist China and their allies, and the third is against the expansionist neo-jihad of the Islamists.

It should not be a surprise that we believe this, my dear. Page 1 of Rantburg, after all, is devoted to War on Terror Operations, and Page 2 is for War on Terror Background.

#19  I'd think that when you came to the realization that you were killing innocent people, you might have a "My God, what have I done?" moment.

As it happens, I come from a long line of innocent people who were intentionally targetted by, among others, Nazis, Soviets, and Muslims on jihad. So when such people surround themselves with human shields, whether willing or unwilling, as specifically forbidden by the Geneva Conventions, I agree with the next section of said Conventions which squarely places the blame for casualties among human shields on the shoulders of those hiding behind them — not on the attackers.

#20  Many people are debased. They kill and want to be killed. They will kill you in a heart beat. They don't need a reason. That goes for many people. You don't get a choice in not killing or killing if you can defend yourself and those around you if you are prepared. You give them DEATH. If you are not prepared, be prepared to die as you walk to your car in a parking lot, and death walks up to you and demands your wallet, and then death puts a gun against the side of your head and pulls the foching trigger...

No.

#25  So, nationalists like Saddam and Islamists like Al-Qaeda were actually best buddies? Who knew?

I don't understand where you get the idea that people who form alliances are best buddies. Alliances form out of common interests. Once that common interest ceases to exist, the allies turn against each other if they have other goals that put them in opposition. Crack open a history book some time. It's nothing like Star Wars or Disney movies. You do realize that Greek states allied with Persia against other Greek states, don't you? And that European alliances shifted constantly. Italy sided with Britain in WWI and Germany in WWII. It's a matter of who offers the best deal.

#26  Never attacked us? Have you been reading the articles posted in Home Front: WoT, Herb? Asymmetric warfare doesn’t look like two armies going toe to toe, Civil War style. It’s all those stupid, semi-crazy lone wolves who self-radicalize after reading the posts and watching the videos posted by ISIS, Al Qaeda, and all the other jihadi groups and individuals; all the connected known wolves who pull together plots involving guns, bombs, and trucks; and the formal sleeper cells reporting to the handlers in Iran and Lebanon. It’s a steady trickle of attacks intended to terrorize us and prepare us for the final surrender. And it’s certainly not about a single jihadi organization, because even local leaders, eg Boko Haram change affiliation based on whichever label is cooler at the moment.

New Haven fire chief: Mosque fire was intentionally set
The question becomes whether it was kids getting rambunctious, malicious Muslim-haters, or the common problem of a member of the congregation trying to create news.
[NHRegister] The fire that scarred the Diyanet Mosque of New Haven Sunday was intentionally set, Fire Chief John Alston said Monday.

Alston stood in the steady rain before the blackened front and the white minarets of the house of worship as he announced the initial results of the inquiry, gathered close to city officials and congregants from the mosque.

We’ve detected that there is intent in this fire. This was intentionally set," said Alston, who said his heart went out to those who worship at the mosque.

Alston declined to say what evidence was found or whether there was surveillance footage of the area. Police Chief Otoniel Reyes said officials would not discuss any aspect of the investigation at this time to ensure its integrity is maintained.

Reyes said the criminal investigation was in its infancy stages. He asked that anyone in the community with any information, "however minimal you think it might be," come forward, as it may prove useful.

A reward of up to $2,500 has been offered for any information that leads to an arrest or conviction in the case, officials said.

The mosque currently is uninhabitable, Alston said.

"The one thing I find hopeful is, I heard from the imam (that) other houses of worship, churches and synagogues, have stepped forward and said, ’We want to help.’ And what I heard here from the folks at this mosque is they welcome the help, but they want to worship right here in this place," said Lamont. "And we’re going to do everything we can to make that happen."

A police car was parked in the otherwise-empty lot outside the mosque Monday morning. Soon after noon, there was a truck from the New Haven Fire Department’s fire investigation unit at the scene, as well.

Yellow police tape barred entry to the mosque.

Ahead of the news conference Monday, Mosque President Haydar Elevli said local churches had offered the congregation a place to hold services after Sunday’s fire, but no decision had been made as to where they’ll hold services.

Elevli said he was unsure of the extent of the damage at the mosque, but thankful no one was hurt.

The fire was a blow, he said ‐ the mosque, under construction for some time, was months away from completion, and the blaze comes during the holy month of Ramadan.

Elevli said funds would be raised from the Moslem community and the Ottoman Turkish government to help repair the damage and continue construction.
"We’re going to keep going," said Elevli.

The Diyanet Center of America, the umbrella organization of which the New Haven mosque is a part,
...the Turks have been busily spending money. Only three years ago they opened a $110 million, 2-minaret monstrosity in the Ottoman style near Washington , DC...
described the damage to the mosque as "huge" in a Facebook post Sunday and asked people to consider offering donations.
Diyanet Center of America is an operating name of the Ottoman Turkish American Community Center, a Maryland-based nonprofit, according to its website. The community center "was established in 1993 by a group of Ottoman Turkish-Americans to provide religious, social and educational services to Ottoman Turkish immigrants colonists and Moslems" living in the United States, the site says.

"Diyanet Center of America receives its major support from Presidency of Religious Affairs (Diyanet), an institution of the Ottoman Turkish Government," the site says.

Fire officials reported Sunday that a two-alarm blaze broke out at the mosque, with fire on the first floor extending to the second.

4 policemen martyred in blast in Quetta's Satellite Town
[DAWN] Four coppers were martyred when a blast destroyed a market in Quetta's Satellite Town on Monday night, according to Quetta Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police Abdul Razzaq Cheema.

The DIG said that two coppers and seven civilians were maimed in the blast, and that a police van was damaged.

The blast, according to DIG Cheema, was the result of an improvised bomb (IED) planted in a cycle of violence parked on the roadside.

The injured were shifted to the Civil Hospital, where an emergency was imposed. Security officials, meanwhile, cordoned off the area.

It is the fourth act of violence in the country since the holy month of Ramazan began. On May 8, five coppers were martyred in what officials described as a suicide kaboom targeting an Elite Force van detailed to the security of the Data Darbar shrine in Lahore.

Later the same day, three people, including a tribal leader named Wali Khan Achakzai, were killed in a blast in Killa Abdullah.

Today's blast comes two days after a terrorist attack on Pearl Continental Hotel, Gwadar in which three people were killed while four were maimed.

Nationwide curfews, social media block in Sri Lanka after anti-Muslim riots
[DAWN] Sri Lanka imposed a nationwide six-hour night curfew and banned Facebook, WhatsApp and other social media platforms on Monday after anti-Moslem riots gripped several towns in the latest fallout from the Easter bombings.

Christian groups attacked Moslem-owned shops in a sign of the ongoing religious tension in Sri Lanka since the April 21 attacks by jacket wallahs on three hotels and three churches which left 258 dead.

A Moslem man was slashed to death, making him the first fatality in the riots, police said. The 45-year-old man died shortly after admission to a hospital in Puttalam district, a police official told AFP.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Army captures 3 towns in northwestern Hama
[ALMASDARNEWS] A source from the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) told Al-Masdar that the Tiger Forces had captured three towns from the jihadist rebels in the northwestern countryside of the Hama Governorate.

According to the source, the Syrian Arab Army imposed full control over the towns of Hawash, Tal Hawash, and Al-Jabriyah after a brief battle with the jihadist rebels of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham and the Turkish-backed National Liberation Front.

The source said the Syrian Army briefly held Tal Hawash a few days ago, but they were ultimately forced to withdraw after a swift counter-attack by the jihadist rebels.

The Syrian Arab Army and their allies are now working to secure the northwestern axis of the Hama Governorate.

With these three towns under their control, the Syrian Army will likely shift their attention to the large hilltop of Tal Sakher, which is needed to secure the imperative town of Kafr Naboudeh.

Kafr Naboudeh, along with several other areas, was captured by the Syrian Arab Army and their allies last Wednesday; however, despite taking control of the town, they have faced heavy attacks from the jihadist rebels who are determined to retake their lost territories in northwestern Hama.

Jihadists in Idlib attack Christian city for 2nd straight day
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist rebels in the Idlib Governorate has attacked the Christian city of al-Sqaylabiyeh for the second straight day, a source in the area told al-Masdar News this morning.

According to the source, the jihadist rebels fired rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and artillery shells into al-Sqaylabiyeh, hitting a number of homes in the predominately Antiochian Orthodox city.

On Sunday, the jihadist rebels launched an identical attack that killed six people, including five children.

The Christian city has long been targeted the jihadist rebels because of their resistance to their attacks.

Al-Sqaylabiyeh is home to one of the most powerful units from the National Defense Forces (NDF) and the ISIS Hunters.

During the jihadist offensive in northwestern Hama in 2014, Jabhat al-Nusra
...formally Jabhat an-Nusrah li-Ahli al-Sham (Support Front for the People of the Levant), also known as al-Qaeda in the Levant. They aim to establish a pan-Arab caliphate. Not the same one as the Islamic State, though .. ...
and the Free Syrian Army
... the more palatable version of the Syrian insurgency, heavily influenced by the Moslem Brüderbund...
(FSA) repeatedly tried to capture al-Sqaylabiyeh and the nearby Christian city of Mhardeh; however, the locals fought off all of their attacks.

Al-Sqaylabiyeh is also home to a large number of displaced civilians from the Hama and Idlib governorates; they fled to the city to escape the violence taking place in and around their homes.

Russian, Syrian forces restart attack on key mountaintop town in Latakia
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Russian and Syrian forces restarted their assault on the key mountaintop town of Kabani in the northeastern countryside of the Latakia Governorate.

Led by Russian jets from the Hmeimim Airbase in southwest Latakia, the two forces unleashed a heavy assault on the positions of the Turkestan Islamic Party and Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
in the vicinity of Kabani.

In addition to the Russian Arclight airstrikes, the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) 4th Armored Division has let loose a large number of missiles from their Golan-1000 launcher; this resulted in a number of direct hits on the jihadist defenses.

This morning’s attack comes just 24 hours after they attempted to storm Kabani and expel the remaining jihadist rebels from the area.

However,
women are made to be loved, not understood...
despite the intensity of their attack, the Syrian Arab Army was ultimately unable to bypass the jihadist defenses, resulting in their subsequent withdrawal to Height 1154 at the southern slope of the al-Zuwayqat Mountain.

The Syrian Arab Army is looking to capture Kabani in the coming days as they attempt to seal off the Latakia Governorate from neighboring Idlib.

If they are successful, they will be able to impose fire control over several areas in the Jisr al-Shughour District of the Idlib Governorate.

The Tiger Forces managed to capture three towns from the jihadist rebels, today, after engaging in a short battle near the southern axis of the Idlib Governorate.

According to a military source, the Tiger Forces captured the towns of Tal Hawash, Hawash, and al-Jabriyah after the main line of defense for the jihadist rebels collapsed.

The Syrian Army is now pounding the remaining areas under the control of the jihadist and Ottoman Turkish-backed rebels in the northern countryside of Hama.

Jihadist special forces carry out operation behind Syrian Army lines, several soldiers killed
[ALMASDARNEWS] The jihadist special forces, Inghimasi, carried out a new operation on Monday that targeted a Syrian Arab Army (SAA) post near the front-lines in northeastern Latakia.

According to reports, the Inghimasi fighters snuck behind the Syrian Arab Army’s lines at Tal Rasho, killing and wounding several soldiers in the process.

A Syrian military source could not confirm the total number killed, but said the estimates are between 15-20 soldiers killed as a result of this Ighimasi attack.

This latest attack by the special forces division of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham
comes at the same time the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and their allies prepare to storm the key town of Kabani in northeastern Latakia.

The Syrian Arab Army has already captured the two heights at the southern slope of the al-Zuwayqat Mountain; they will now need to secure the southern part of Kabani in order to possibly take the town within the next few days.
