Core dumps...
I've had some really long posts on this site in the past few days - maybe months. Rather than making readers scroll through page after page of stuff they might not be interested in, I'll move the full article to another page - I'm using my old Blogspot for now - and put the short version up front here. If it gets to be more trouble than it's worth, let me know and I'll try and come up with something better.

Changes to comments...
I reworked the Comments last night, doing them the way I originally intended. Naturally, that hoses all the comments which have ever been done before, and I'll eventually have to move them by hand. You shouldn't notice any difference, except that the new version will appear below the "Posted by" line instead of above it. If I put any bugs in, let me know.

If you link to Rantburg, please use the www.rantburg.com address. This is still on a low-bandwidth, backup free site. If my regular host isn't back up and running tomorrow, I'm moving, after almost five years. It's been an entire week...

Afghanistan
Karzai makes nice with mullahs
Interim Prime Minister Hamid Karzai told religious leaders from across Afghanistan on Sunday that they wouldn't be punished for supporting the Taliban, and asked for their help in rebuilding the country. "We should not arrest people on the pretext of being Taliban," Karzai told a seminar of mullahs from every province of Afghanistan. "A powerful hand was behind the Taliban. I don't think there are any Taliban here any more."
That's actually, if partially, correct. Treating it as though it was entirely correct allows a segment of the mullahs to save face and still join the interim coalition. Karzai's smarter than given credit for. They've been pushing the Pakistani involvement and even Afghans should be able to see the hand of Qazi and Fazl and the rest of the NWFP religious loons. And the Saudi money.
Karzai recited poetry and spoke about Islamic responsibility in a 30-minute speech to dozens of religious leaders in turbans at the studios of Kabul television. He said the mullahs have an important role to play in rebuilding the country.
Sure, why not? They had an important role in ruining it in the first place.
"We appreciate you," Karzai told the religious leaders. "It is the responsibility of all to help release Afghanistan from poverty."
As a rule of thumb, the higher the number of mullahs, the higher the rate of poverty. But maybe he's considering them as scholars, rather than as religious fanatics. Most likely, he's trying to win as many over as he can without worrying about what they're going to do next year. At the moment they're a counterweight to the warlords, at least those of them who aren't behind the warlords.

Axis of Evil
Hegemonists picking on Muslims
Commander of the Islamic Revolution's Guards Corps Rahim Safavi told students at the Tehran University Friday that the world hegemonists are intending to act against Muslims and block the wave of pro-Islam calls throughout the world.
Damn those hegemonists, pickin' on the poor Muslims. And they wudn't doin' nothin'!
He said the September suicide attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon were beyond the "intelligence resources" of the al-Qaeda and its kingpin, Osama Bin Laden. "There are issues beyond the scene relating to this incident," General Safavi said without elaboration.
Ah, it's the old "inside job" line.
Washington, he added, was intending to "guarantee security for the occupying regime of Al-Qods (Jerusalem) and dominate oil resources of the Central Asia and the Caucasus."
We're supposed to holler "No Blood for Oil" here...
Tehran briskly condemned the September 11 attack on American trade and defense centers, but it is opposed to the U.S. military assault on Afghanistan for exacting its toll on civilians. In February, Safavi denounced civilian deaths of the U.S. attacks, saying "the Washington government martyred the innocent Afghan people with 'thermobaric' bombs which suck up air and extinguish any life on their way."
Why were the innocent Afghan people holed up in caves and shooting? How would we know they were innocent, so we wouldn't shoot back? Didn't we get any of the guilty ones?

Iraq salutes Chavez
Speaking before journalists on Sunday, Iraqi Vice-Prime Minister Tariq Aziz called the unsuccess of a military coup d'etats and the return of Chavez to the Presidential Palace «a victory over the American criminal conspiracy». «I am happy to congratulate friendly people of Venezuela with the victory over the American conspiracy, which after failing in Venezuela, will fail in other countries also», - stated Tariq Aziz.
Tariq, this is the bad news: Iraq and Venezuela aren't in the same category. At least not yet.

Caucasus
Georgia expects armed intrusion in Kodori Gorge
The threat of an armed invasion of Georgian territory, the Kodor Gorge in particular, is becoming more and more real every day, as Tbilisi claims. This was announced during the session of Parliamentary Committee on Defense and Security of Georgia by its Chief Georgi Baramidze.

Fifth Column
Protesters Spread Out Across Capital
Marching with puppets and placards and armed with many messages, tens of thousands of protesters joined forces on a warm spring Saturday to demonstrate peacefully against everything from U.S. policy in the Mideast to globalization and corporate greed.
Sounds like protest for the sake of protest, doesn't it?
Protesters massed at sites across the city, then swarmed down Pennsylvania Avenue toward the Capitol, in an eclectic crowd that mixed young communists, Black Panthers and "Raging Grannies." People came in busloads from around the country to show there are vibrant opposition views in the United States.

This is pretty long. Click here for the entire core dump.

Feds want to lengthen spy's neck
Government lawyers told a federal judge Friday they intend to seek the death penalty against a retired Air Force master sergeant accused of trying to spy for Iraq, Libya and China. The government accused Brian Patrick Regan, 39, of creating a "grave risk of death" to U.S. military pilots patrolling the no-fly zone over Iraq. Regan allegedly intended to sell Iraqi president Saddam Hussein secret details about American satellites that could help Iraq hide its anti-aircraft missiles. Regan has pleaded innocent to the charges in federal court. His lawyer, Nina J. Ginsberg, could not be reached Friday despite several messages left at her office.
With a client like this, Madame Lawyer is probably thinking of becoming an alcoholic.

India-Pakistan
Binny's not in Pak Kashmir. Nope.
Authorities in Azad Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday rejected the report as baseless that Al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was hiding anywhere in their area. Turkey's Anatolia News Agency, quoting Istanbul-based daily Hurriyet, had said the Turkish intelligence agency had confirmed rumours that Osama had gone underground in Azad Kashmir.
I'd have guessed he was in NWFP, at Fazlur Rehman's house, or maybe Samiul Haq's. But he could be in Lahore, hanging around with Hamid Gul. Any truth to this rumor? Tell us, please...
"This is totally a speculative story, height of imagination, which doesn't have a slight connection with reality," a senior government official. Azad Kashmir, he said, was a small area with limited entry points and it was ridiculous to believe that any stranger, let alone a person being searched by the whole world, could live there for long without being spotted. "Osama has never been to Azad Kashmir or for that matter to the occupied Kashmir," the official said, without going into details.
Hmmm. Sounds pretty certain. Ask him if Binny's ever been to Faisalabad. Go ahead.
The Hizbul Mujahideen also termed the report "unfounded and flimsy and part of a propaganda campaign against the Kashmir liberation movement." The group's spokesman Salim Hashmi said such "concocted stories" were aimed at tarnishing the indigenous character of the freedom struggle in Kashmir and establishing a false link between the Kashmiri Mujahideen and the Al Qaeda.
Oh. You mean they just used their training facilities and money while they were occupying Afghanistan?
"We have said time and again that we are fighting for the freedom of our motherland on our own and in accordance with the United Nations charter. Those trying to link us with Al Qaeda are in fact strengthening India's false stand against our noble struggle," Hashmi said.
Yeah. Damn those Jews Indians!

Qazi jugged
Pakistan police broke up the first major demonstration against General Pervez Musharraf's referendum on extending his presidency, arresting a key Islamist leader. Qazi Hussain Ahmad was placed under one-day house arrest as he left his Jamaat-i-Islami party's headquarters in the eastern city of Lahore to lead an outlawed procession of hundreds of supporters. Ahmad, whose party is considered the most organised Islamic faction in the country, was able to deliver a short speech to the 500-strong crowd before being taken away. "Our arrest is a defeat for Musharraf," he said. "I appeal to you to please disperse peacefully because we are not in confrontation with the police, our struggle is against those who have usurped power." Police earlier seized Jamaat's vice president Liaquat Baluch in an overnight raid on his Lahore home.
It's only overnight. The remainder of JI's leadership has "gone underground", along with the leadership of Tehrik-i-Jafria Pakistan, which is a banned group even though they don't make much pretense of being out of business. Tehrik-i-Jafria is a Shi'ite equivalent of JI, so if he ever gets power for himself Qazi will probably kill them all.

Middle East
Israel faces Eurobargo on weapons
Israel is facing the threat of an arms embargo by the European Union. Several EU countries have relayed warnings that they would halt military supplies to Israel unless it ends the military campaign in the West Bank. They said the EU will debate proposals for an embargo on Israel concerning all products that could be used in the war against the Palestinian Authority. So far, Belgium, Britain, France, Germany and Italy are said to be considering a weapons embargo against Israel. Belgium is a supplier of light weapons for security forces. Industry sources said such countries as Britain and Germany have already slowed down or halted the export of weapons or components to Israel. This has included equipment for Israel's Merkava Mk-4 main battle tank.
Guess the Saudis have more money. Sure hope the Israelis keep this little fact in mind when the current festivities have concluded for awhile.

Israel: You can keep Mary and Terje
Israel has agreed to cooperate with a UN fact-finding committee investigating the battle in Jenin, as long as it does not include UN Middle East envoy Terje Larsen or UN Human Rights High Commissioner Mary Robinson. Both Larsen and Robinson are viewed as biased against Israel, and any committee they are involved in would not present a fair picture, a senior official in Jerusalem said last night. The official said Israel has agreed to a committee sent by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan that would "clarify the facts" of what happened in Jenin.

The UN Security Council on Friday unanimously endorsed a resolution that will send a "fact-finding team" to Jenin to determine what happened during Israel's military operation there.
They can probably find some more "unbiased" people. Prince Abdullah would probably volunteer for the job. And Mullah Fudlullah.

Saudi intellects: US and Israel are Axis of Evil
A group of Saudi intellectuals and writers has condemned the United States and Israel and described them as the axis of evil in the world, borrowing a phrase US President George Bush has used for Iran, Iraq and North Korea. The 113 Saudis, some of them prominent writers for respected Saudi papers, said the American role in the Israeli military operation against the Palestinians was "shameful" and said the "Israeli massacres do not differ in shape or form from what the Nazis did."

Still exploding in Jenin even after the fighting's done
Israeli-Arab nurse Wail Amari of Ha'emek Hospital in Afula suffered light to moderate wounds yesterday when he stepped on a bomb left in the Jenin refugee camp by terrorists. He was helping search for the bodies of Palestinians killed in battles with the IDF. Since the army left the camp early Friday morning, at least five Palestinians have been wounded by stepping on or otherwise triggering bombs planted by the Palestinian terrorists inside the camp to be used against soldiers during Operation Defensive Shield. According to Palestinian medical officials, 43 bodies have been recovered from the rubble in the center of the camp. Yesterday afternoon, workers rescued a 17-year-old Palestinian youth who was still alive.
Oh, golly. Ain't it terrible the way those Jews left all those booby traps behind to murder innocents? And 43 bodies is almost the same as thousands. Want to bet that a year from now they're talking about "thousands" instead of "43"?

IDF pulls out of Nablus and Ramallah. Yasser still jugged.
Israeli forces pulled out of the battered West Bank cities of Nablus and Ramallah after a three-week occupation that has left scores dead, but Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat remained under close guard in his besieged Ramallah headquarters. Chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat slammed the Israeli pull-backs in the West Bank as a facade. "This is lie for television. It doesn't mean anything," he said.
Nothing means anything, Saeb. Life is an illusion. And who should know better than someone who's liable to explode at any minute?

Terror Networks
Lone Detainee Arrives at Guantanamo
A lone captive of the war on terrorism arrived at Club Fed on Saturday but U.S. military officials refused to say whether it was Abu Zubaydah. The man arrived early Saturday morning in good medical condition, said Maj. James Bell. Bell refused to give any other details about the man or on where he had been brought from but said he required no immediate medical attention. None of the other 299 detainees here arrived here alone. They all were flown in on military transport planes that take more than 24 hours to reach here from Afghanistan.
Oh, golly. Wonder who he could be? Lessee, here. Was he giggling and saying things like, "Like, wow, man! Listen to the colors!"

Al Rashid trust put on false nose, glasses, stayed in business
The United States has blocked the finances of a further nine individuals and a re-named organization reportedly based in Pakistan that had been black-listed earlier. The Pakistan-based organization, Al Rashid Trust, was among the first organizations named by the US as a "financial facilitator of terrorists". The organization was said to have changed its name to The Aid Organization of the Ulema (AOU) and to have allegedly remained active. The AOU, the US charges, is headquartered in Pakistan, and continues to operate offices there. "They have been raising funds for the Taliban since 1999". The designation of the organization on the new list signifies "capture" of the re-named office and identifies additional locations of other branch offices in Pakistan.

54 Islamothugs jugged in Egypt
More than 50 members of an Islamist movement suspected of having ties with Osama bin Laden's Al Qaeda network, including four Britons were recently arrested in Egypt, police said. The source said 54 "extremists", including four British citizens, from the Hizb Al-Tahrir (Islamic Liberation Party) were arrested over the past two weeks in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria, correcting a report by the daily Al-Ahram which put the number of arrests at 100.

The police said several of the detainees had citizenship from Egypt and a second country. They confirmed that four detainees were British and had links to Al Qaeda. The men were all being held for a 15-day period, which is renewable, charged with "belonging to a clandestine and illegal organization with the goal of suspending the law and the constitution and preventing state institutions from accomplishing their goals," the police said.

The Hizb Al-Tahrir, a group which flourished in the Middle East in the 1970s, is committed to the creation of one Islamic state for Muslims around the world and advocates armed struggle. The group attempted a coup against Egypt in the 1970s and was squashed.
I think I'm finally getting the Egyptian picture. They won't (publicly) cooperate with the US but they're not going to do anything stupid, they publicly support Yasser and wouldn't mind seeing him decompose, and if you pose a threat to Mubarak they'll rip your arms off. I don't think the hatemongers who write in al-Ahram count, at least in Mubarak's view.

Bomb attacks kill 14, wound 60 in Philippines
At least 14 people were killed and 60 others wounded in several bomb explosions in the southern Philippine city of General Santos. Nineteen of the wounded were in serious condition. All the casualties were victims of a bomb explosion in front of a busy department store. Minutes later, another bomb was hurled from a passing car as it went over a bridge but there were no reports of any casualties.

According to local television, more than two explosions could have occurred in General Santos. Police received numerous reports of other bombs but they were found to be false alarms. Hours before the blasts, cellular telephone text messages had circulated in General Santos, saying 18 bombs would explode in the city. Most of the fatalities were street vendors or people shopping on their day off. The deadly bomb was hidden in an empty motorized tricycle parked in front of the Fitmark Department Store. No group had claimed responsibility for the bombs. Police were in "hot pursuit" of a suspect. Police have set up checkpoints and dispatched bomb sniffing dogs to prevent against further explosions. The explosions could be the work of an obscure group called the Indigenous People's Federal Army or other "lawless" groups, including extortionists who had been threatening local businesses. The Federal Army claimed to have planted several bombs last month in Manila and the southern Philippines, none of which were meant to explode.

The Short Attention Span Theater
Nitwit pervert attacks two mall maidens and a granny lady
A man charged with taking his clothes off and then attacking two customers and an employee at a Subway restaurant in Williamston, S.C., was denied bail on Friday. Investigators said that Ralph Leonard Jones Jr., 32, went apparently unnoticed into the women's restroom at the Williamston sub shop and stripped down to his socks. When a 16-year-old female employee opened the restroom door, Jones pulled her in and began attacking her. A 15-year-old female customer was also attacked and some of her clothing was removed. The girl's grandmother was also attacked when she went into the restaurant to pull the attacker off her granddaughter.
An insanity defense would seem to be called for. His Mom must be really proud.
