Afghanistan
Hundreds protest civilian deaths in Kabul
[Arab News] Hundreds of people chanting "Death to America™" protested in Kabul on Sunday against a spate of civilian casualties caused by international forces, a sign of the simmering anti-Western emotion among many ordinary Afghans.

The demonstrators marched through the center of the capital, some carrying banners bearing pictures of blood-covered dead children they said were killed in air strikes by foreign forces. The protest came five days after nine Afghan boys were bumped off by two attack helicopters as they collected firewood in eastern Kunar province
... which is right down the road from Binny's house in Chitral...

The incident, in a volatile area that has seen a recent spike in foreign military operations, prompted a rare public apology from the top two US military officers in Afghanistan.

President Barack B.O. Obama also expressed "deep regret" over the killings to Afghanistan's Caped President Hamid Maybe I'll join the Taliban Karzai and the United Nations, aka the Oyster Bay Chowder and Marching Society called for a review of air strikes by foreign forces in Afghanistan. Karzai on Sunday rejected the US apology for the killing of Afghan boys in a NATO air attack and said civilian casualties are no longer acceptable.

According to a statement from his office, Karzai told Gen. David Petraeus, the top commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan, that expressing regret was not sufficient in last week's killing of the boys, ages 12 and under, by coalition helicopters. "We will never forgive the blood shed by our innocent Afghans who were killed by NATO forces," said protester Ahmad Baseer, a university student.

"The Kunar incident is not the first and it will not be the last time civilian casualties are caused by foreign troops. All we can do is protest and condemn it." Dozens of women were also among the protesters, a rare occurrence in a country where women are largely banned from public life. Using loudspeakers, some of the women chanted: "We don't want Americans, we don't want the Taliban, we want peace."

Civilian casualties caused by NATO-led and Afghan forces hunting faceless myrmidons have again become a major source of friction between Karzai and his Western backers, even though UN figures show that more than three-quarters are caused by krazed killers.

#5  Definitely situational ethics at work here. The Talibunz kills a few thousand civilians, no problem. The US get less than a dozen, big problem.

Nato Forces Kill 11 Militants in Helmand
[Tolo News] At least 11 hard boyz including a local commander were killed on Saturday in Nato Arclight airstrikes, local officials said on Sunday.

The incident happened in Musa Qala district of Helmand when Nato choppers targeted a hideout of krazed killers, officials said.

The officials said a Taliban capo named Mullah Fazil who was commanding a group of Death Eaters in Sangin district, has also been killed in the attack.

Taliban have not yet commented.

Nato and Afghan forces have started military operations in different parts of the country in which dozens of Death Eaters have been killed or maimed.

Foreign troops are to leave Afghanistan by the end of 2014 and Afghan forces will take full security responsibilities.

12 Civilians Killed in Afghanistan
[Tolo News] At least 12 non-combatants were killed on Sunday in a roadside kaboom blast in eastern Paktika
...which coincidentally borders South Wazoo...
province, local officials said.

The incident happened in Paktika near Pakistain border when a roadside kaboom struck a passenger truck in the area, Mukhlis Afghan, a front man for governor of Paktika told TOLOnews.

Twelve non-combatants were killed including five children, two women and five others were maimed in the incident, he added.

Improvised Explosive Devices are used to attack foreign and Afghan forces in the country.

Paktika has been a hotbed of bad boy activity recently.

On Saturday the Afghan Women Network said that child casualties in military raids and incidents of children being used by beturbanned goons in the war have increased substantially.

Efforts being made by institutions responsible to improve Afghan children's situation and stop beturbanned goons from using them in suicide kabooms haven't been effective.

Afghan Women Network urged the government to increase efforts to prevent beturbanned goons using kids in their attacks and put pressure on foreign troops to avoid child deaths in their attacks.

Children Role-play Suicide Attack
[Tolo News] A video clip recently put up on the internet indicates a number of children under 12 role-playing a suicide kaboom in an unknown location.

Clerics say misusing children in Islamic myrmidon attacks in particular suicide kabooms are totally against Islamic ethics.

The footage, 84-second, shows some children role-playing a suicide kaboom, with one boy dressed in black being hugged and wished well by his friends before blowing himself up.

"Our prophet has said that we should treat children with kindness. Anybody who refuses to be kind to kids, will be exempted of Allah's mercy," Sayed Salahuddin, a Mohammedan holy man, said. "There have been more than a hundred cases where children have been bombed and killed."

The New York Times reported that the Taliban dismissed making the clip, but the video shows that the children are being dictated from behind the camera.

Renegade leader clashes with S. Sudan army, offers cease-fire
[Arab News] Renegade militia fighters clashed twice with south Sudanese soldiers, both sides said on Sunday, in the latest sign of instability in the oil-producing territory months ahead of its expected independence.

Militia leader George Athor, a former army officer who rebelled last year saying he had been cheated out of the governorship of the southern state of Jonglei, told Rooters he was ready to call a cease-fire to end weeks of violence.

Just short of 99 percent of southern voters chose to split away from the north in a referendum in January, a vote promised in a 2005 peace deal that ended decades of civil war with the north. The south is due to secede on July 9.

Athor, speaking by satellite phone, said his forces exchanged fire with southern army patrols on Friday and Saturday in Jonglei -- where French oil giant Total was due to start exploring this year.

"There were skirmishes between reconnaissance patrols on Friday, in a village called Pachot, the SPLA (southern army) had seven injured, four killed."

He said there were no fatalities in fighting a day later in the village of Alow.

Athor said he had ordered his men not to launch more attacks.

"We are ready to declare a cease-fire. We will only respond if we are attacked ... Our people are really suffering. When there is fighting they leave their homes and go to the bush. There is need for a cease-fire for our people to go back to their villages."

SPLA front man Philip Aguer said Athor's forces attacked the army on Friday and Saturday, but had no details of casualties.

Aguer said the south's semi-autonomous government would have to agree to any cease-fire. No one was immediately available to comment from the government.

More on the SAS/"Diplomat" fiasco in Libya
Doh!
The British "diplomat" captured in Libya along with seven special forces soldiers was a Bond-style MI6 spy, The Sun can reveal.
Right next to the page 3 girl...
He and his SAS team were released last night, 72 hours after a secret mission to make contact with rebel leaders went badly wrong.

Angry questions were being asked about alleged intelligence failures that forced them to surrender when surrounded and "suicidally outnumbered" by militia.

Despite Government claims it sent a "small diplomatic team", The Sun can reveal it was an MI6 secret agent and his special forces minders. Their job was to contact opponents of Libyan tyrant Colonel Gaddafi after intelligence reports that the rebels were open to talks.

But the Brits found themselves surrounded by scores of militia armed with AK-47 assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenades. Armed farmers reportedly challenged the team when they arrived at an agricultural compound.

It was claimed they were spotted after driving into a farm and unloading kit bags.

One AK-47-wielding farmhand, named Rafah, said: "We fired into the air and said, 'Hands up, don't move'. They did as we said. It wasn't very difficult."

The farmers kept them at gunpoint for several hours, giving them breakfast while waiting until rebel leaders arrived. Their phones and weapons were seized before delicate negotiations secured their release after 72 hours.

And last night a row was brewing over the bungled op - which handed a PR coup to Gaddafi.

The team was made up of the MI6 officer, six SAS troopers plus an Army signaller. They were captured on Friday near the town of Khandra, nearly 20 miles west of rebel-held Benghazi, after landing in the desert by helicopter three days earlier.

The MI6 man was NOT directly plotting to help bring down Gaddafi, Government sources insisted. He was trying to establish diplomatic relations with rebels fighting to topple the dictator and a larger Foreign Office team was to follow.

It has emerged that rebel chiefs tried to persuade him to make London recognise them as the legitimate government.

Later Libyans were filmed holding underpants said to belong to one Brit - which they said had a secret compartment sewn into it.

After being freed, the team left Benghazi on the frigate HMS Cumberland, heading for Malta. A military source said they had to surrender. He went on: "This is a massive intelligence failure that rests on bad government planning. It is NOT a question of the professionalism or bravery of the SAS.

"They were suicidally outnumbered. The men did absolutely the right thing." The official slammed ministers "for yet another shambolic decision on Libya." He said: "This could have ended in catastrophe. Lives were at risk."

A senior member of Benghazi's revolutionary council said it had been feared the SAS men were Gaddafi's foreign mercenaries. He said: "They were carrying espionage equipment, reconnaissance equipment, multiple passports and weapons. How do we know who they are?"
Fair point...
Libyan state TV last night broadcast a recording of a phone call in which British Ambassador Richard Northern tells a rebel leader he was "not surprised" the SAS were greeted with hostility. He says: "I understand there has been a misunderstanding and they have been picked up."

The rebel chief replies: "Actually they made a big mistake coming in with a helicopter in an open area."

Mr Northern then says: "Oh did they? I didn't know how they were coming. I'm not surprised that's alarmed them."

A Foreign Office source said the team WAS given the green light to go in but local rebels were not told. The senior source said: "It's easy to criticise and the operation didn't go as well as hoped. But nothing ventured, nothing gained. It's vital to know what's going on in Libya."

The SAS men were from a unit formerly known as The Increment, hand-picked to protect MI5 and MI6 officials.

It was the latest British embarrassment over Libya, after the US shot down the idea of a no-fly zone and we were slow off the mark rescuing stranded citizens.

And Gaddafi exploited it last night, telling his citizens the uprising was a Western conspiracy.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said further attempts will be made to contact the rebels. He said: "A small British diplomatic team has been in Benghazi. They experienced difficulties, which have been resolved."

The squadron 'security element' appears to be a bit lacking. All said, precisely why everyone should stay the hell out of that mess. A "no-fly zone" would require the taking down of Libyan anti-aircraft radars and batteries. Not an easy task, and also an "Act of War."

#6  PPPP.

If nothing else, start the mission by parachuting radios, with "take me to your leader", or the equivalent, written on them in the local language.

Then, when one of them makes it to someone with authority, who is smart enough to figure out how to use a radio, set up a chat with him.

Eventually arrange for "some of your people to meet with some of our people", at a particular place and time. They are to go somewhere, and set up a signal to identify themselves, and wait for a half hour before our guys show up. ("Wear a pink carnation in your lapel.")

Then, if they show up, have your security check out a wide perimeter to see if they brought friends with them. Then and only then do you send your team in, with security sniper overwatch.

Security makes sure that no one interrupts your meeting, that the other guys don't pull any fast ones like trying to kidnap your team, and that your escape route is covered.

In about 70% of the world, your team will need to bring bribes, and promises of more bribes. Only then can they get down to business. For this the team needs flexibility, so needs to be able to make irresistible offers.

And before they part company, to set up protocols for future meetings and communications.

#9  Was going to say: The rebel gov has contacts overseas (I believe the Libyan ambassadors to the US and UN have defected). Have them do the initial protocols for the meet-up. There would have been much less ambiguity.

This looks like a "blind drop" and these have a much lower chance of success, even if you're contacting friends.

Debka: US, anti-Qaddafi forces lack military strength
From March 2nd. Interesting to note what is still valid and what isn't.
Barring changes in the military situation, Muammar Qaddafi looked Wednesday, March 2, as though he had averted his regime's immediate danger of collapse by dint of a successful counter-offensive against rebel forces. His prospects had strikingly improved since Saturday, Feb. 26, when President Barack Obama told him to leave and the UN Security Council clamped down sanctions on his regime.

During the day, the regime's armored forces and commandos supported by the Libyan Air Force recaptured parts of Brega, Libya's refinery city and supplier of the country's benzene, and sections of the Bay of Sirte town of Ajdabiya. debkafile's military sources say the loss of Brega will cause severe fuel and refined oil shortages in rebel-held Cyrenaica in the east.

The reverses suffered by the rebels were implicit in their appeal to the West Tuesday night, March 1 for military intervention, when a few hours earlier they rejected foreign troops coming to their aid. But their SOS came too late.

Unless they can get hold of fuel from outside Libya, the rebels have no chance of organizing enough fighting strength to stand up to Qaddafi's army. Not only have they lost sight of their goal of taking Tripoli but their alternative provisional government in Benghazi is in jeopardy. With the capture of Ajdabiya, Qaddafi's forces control the strategic crossroads linking the two halves of Libya, Tripolitania to Cyrenaica, and have cut off links between the rebels in Cyrenaica and the opposition groups in the west. It is worth noting that troops engaged in Qaddafi's counter-offensive Wednesday came from the strategic town of Sirte, where they were encamped after leading the recapture of Misrata and Zawiya the day before.

The prospect of foreign military intervention on behalf of the Libyan opposition faded Wednesday. By then, British Prime Minister David Cameron was the lone Western voice still talking about a Western or British military option in Libya. Even his close advisers said he was putting his reputation on the line and exposing himself to derision even by calling for the enforcement of a no-fly zone over Libya.
British military circles emphasized that the British army lacks commando strength as well as warplanes and warships for a war operation against Qaddafi, especially for a lengthy campaign. Just this week, 11,000 British troops were sacked in the wake of the Cameron government's defense budget cutbacks.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wednesday that the administration was still very far from imposing no-fly zones over Libya. This was a reversal of her comment Tuesday that this option was being "actively considered" and followed the news conference given Tuesday by US Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, in which both stressed that the UN Security Council in imposing sanctions on Libya had not authorized outside military intervention.

Gates pointed out that there is "no unanimity within NATO for the use of armed force... and we also have to think about, frankly, the use of the US military in another country in the Middle East." Regarding the imposition of no-fly zones, Adm. Mullen was equally skeptical. He warned that such an operation, which he described as "very complex," could lead to situations in which Americans planes were brought down. Both poured cold water on any military options while Gates pointed out that there was no confirmation of the slaughter of civilians by air bombardment. On the number of protesters killed and army defectors, Gates commented, "We are still in the realm of speculation."

Spokesmen in Washington also worked hard to play down the military significance of the passage of two amphibious assault craft, the USS Kearsarge and the USS Ponc[e], through the Suez Canal to Libyan waters. The Pentagon stressed that the 800 marines aboard these vessels would stand ready to render humanitarian aid and help rescue refugees stranded in Libya.

#3  Don't tar Gates with Obama's incompetent silliness.

Gates was the prexy at Texas A&M for a while. He was good friends with my family and he and I had a couple of chats. He wrote a letter to my son thanking him on his Eagle Scout.

Gates is the one person in the Obama regime I trust. He is basically a conservative and I think he is trying to continue Rummy's plans to rationalize the military from a cold war mentality in which most of the generals and feathermerchants are stuck into the Patreaus model of large numbers of special ops guys, light infantry, quick strike mobile forces and counter insurgency trained independent small units. Many of the generals still like strategic bombers, interceptors instead of attack aircraft and armor instead of light infantry. It took almost six years for the Army to get the message, hence the success in Iraq and the latest progress in Afghanistan.
Gates is going to continue to be painted as a blithering idiot by the press because he is a Bush guy. Isn't it interesting that Obama sent him instead of Biden or one of his other empty suits to Afghanistan.
AND wasn't it interesting that Gates is saying the military should stay awhile longer than originally planned.

#4  AND wasn't it interesting that Gates is saying the military should stay awhile longer than originally planned. Posted by Bill Clinton

No Bill, with due respect, it isn't at all "interesting" but rather, most unfortunate. There will be no "democratizing" or bringing civility to these ancient tribes, not in our lifetimes. Unfortunately, we find ourselves once again in a no-win Police Action, backing a vile and currupt regime of drug smugglers, warlords and highwaymen. Afghanistan is another planet, a distant planet that may never be re-shaped into anything which might sustain life and the rule of law as we know it. The faster we can get out of Afghanistan, the better for all concerned. Our president and the US State Department are giving it thier dead level best to extricate us I can assure you. The taxpayers and our brave soldiers are footing the bill and blood for that very costly effort.

If any good can be said for Secretary Gates it must surely be that he is loyal to a fault. I'll toss in the loyalty of the Chairman and Joint Chiefs as well. It takes an extreme amount of loyalty to remain silent or endorse with consent 'man buggering' and lesbianism as acceptable practices in our military. Men that possess this type of blind loyalty have throughout history been found at the right hand of tyrants. Sic Semper Tyrannis.

Pro-Gaddafi forces attack Libyas Misrata: witnesses
[Ennahar] Forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffy
... an Arab institution for 42 years ...
used artillery and tanks in an attack on the rebel-held town of Misrata, 200 km (125 miles) east of the capital, local people told Rooters by telephone.

The fighting appeared to be the most concerted effort yet by government forces to retake the town, the largest population centre controlled by Qadaffy opponents outside the rebel-held east of the country.

Witnesses in Misrata, which has been under rebel control for over a week, said the attack was led by units of a militia led by Khamis, a son of the Libyan leader.

"Very, very heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or sporadic fighting...
is taking place now at the western entrance of the town. The fighting started about an hour ago after an attack by brigades belonging to Khamis," a resident, Mohamed, said by telephone.

"They are destroying everything they find. They are using artillery and tanks. Revolutionaries are doing their best to prevent them from reaching the centre of the town."

A front man for the rebel force in Misrata, who gave his name as Gemal, said the attackers' tanks reached the centre of Misrata earlier in the morning.

"There's heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or sporadic fighting...
taking place. We will push them back," he said.

Until now there only have been skirmishes on the outskirts of the city, with residents reporting occasional outbreaks of fighting around the airport, and at an air base near the city.

If rebel soldiers based in eastern Libya are able to continue their fitful advance eastwards, Misrata could be a stepping stone to reaching the capital, Qadaffy's principal stronghold.

Libya rebels regroup, head towards Bin Jawad
[Ennahar] Rebels in east Libya regrouped on Sunday and moved back towards Bin Jawad after forces loyal to Muammar Qadaffy had ambushed rebels and ejected them from the town earlier in the day, a Rooters witness said.

"We are just outside Bin Jawad. There are thuds of mortars landing near rebel positions, leaving puffs of smoke, and also the sound of heavy machine guns in the distance," Rooters correspondent Mohammed Abbas said in a brief report.

"There's a steady stream of rebels heading back west towards Bin Jawad," he said.

Gaddafi launches counter-offensive on Libya rebels
[Ennahar] Libyan troops loyal to Muammar Qadaffy launched counter-offensives on three rebel-held towns on Sunday as the popular uprising escalated into open warfare.

The resilience of Qadaffy's forces in the face of the widespread insurrection and their ability to counter-attack will increase fears that Libya is heading for a protracted civil war rather than the swift revolutions seen in Tunisia and Egypt.

Qadaffy's troops, backed by tanks, artillery, fighter jets and helicopters attacked the towns of Zawiyah and Misrata, to the immediate west and east of Tripoli, and the oil port city of Ras Lanuf, 660 km (410 miles) east of the capital.

Government spokesmen said Qadaffy's forces won a series of swift victories, but many of the towns remained in rebel hands, Rooters news hounds at the scene and witnesses said.

Qadaffy loyalists were nevertheless jubilant over the reports and automatic gunfire reverberated around the capital.

"These are celebrations because government forces have taken control of all areas to Benghazi and are in the process of taking control of Benghazi," front man Mussa Ibrahim said, referring to Libya's rebel-controlled second largest city situated in the far east.

While Benghazi remained firmly in rebel hands, government troops pushed rebels out of the town of Bin Jawad which they had captured on Saturday, back to Ras Lanuf.

One fighter returning maimed to Ras Lanuf from the frontline was asked what he had seen. He replied: "Death."

Rebels surrounded by Qadaffy troops near the center of Zawiyah, 50 km (30 miles) west of Tripoli, faced another onslaught on Sunday after repelling two major assaults by tanks and infantry the day before.

"This morning, there was a new attack, bigger than yesterday. There were one and a half hours of fighting ... Two people were killed from our side and many more injured," front man Youssef Shagan said by telephone.

"We are still in full control of the square. Now it is quiet," he added.

FIGHT BACK
Elite forces under Qadaffy's son Khamis also launched an assault on Misrata, 200 km (125 miles) east of the capital.

"Very, very heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or sporadic fighting...
is taking place now at the western entrance of the town. The fighting started about an hour ago after an attack by brigades belonging to Khamis," said the resident, called Mohamed.

"They are destroying everything they find. They are using artillery and tanks. Revolutionaries are doing their best to prevent them from reaching the center of the town," he said

Doctors at Ras Lanuf hospital said two dead and 22 maimed had arrived from the fighting. A French journalist was shot in the leg, a doctor said, and four rebels were seriously maimed and unlikely to survive.

But the rebels said they had shot down a helicopter. Three rebel fighters speaking at Ras Lanuf said they had seen the helicopter fall into the sea. A Rooters correspondent was shown the wreckage of a warplane on Saturday that rebels said they had shot down. Several witnesses in Bin Jawad said there were many dead and maimed that could not be reached. One man said he had seen a civilian building hit by a bomb.

"The maimed people shouted at us to get their children out. We left the dead," said Khaled Abdul Karim, a rebel fighter.

Rebels repel Misrata attack; Saudis evacuated from Libya
[Arab News] Libyan rebels beat back an attack by forces loyal to Libyan leader Muammar Qadaffy
... an Arab institution for 42 years ...
on the town of Misrata on Sunday, residents said.

Government forces used tanks and artillery in what appeared to be their most concerted effort yet to retake the town, 200 km east of the capital Tripoli, but were pushed back by rebels fighting Qadaffy's 41-year-old rule. "The (pro-Qadaffy) brigades tried to reach the center of the town but revolutionaries managed to repel them. They (the brigades) retreated to the airbase," said one resident, who did not want to give his name, said.

"The revolutionaries captured 20 soldiers and seized a tank. The town is now fully in the control of the youths." Misrata is the largest population center controlled by Qadaffy opponents outside the rebel-held east of the country. If rebel soldiers are able to continue their fitful advance westwards, Misrata could be a stepping stone to reaching the capital, Qadaffy's principal stronghold.

Soddy Arabian Airlines has evacuated Saudis living in Libya as well as the families of Saudi Embassy staff in the country following instructions from King of the Arabians, Sheikh of the Burning Sands, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.

Moejib Al-Dossary, Saudia's manager for Tunisia and Libya, said the evacuation was carried out in coordination with the Civil Aviation Authority in Libya.

"We have airlifted more than 90 passengers in record time despite a lack of human and technical capabilities at Tripoli International Airport," he said.

Witnesses in Misrata, which has been under rebel control for over a week, earlier said the government attack was led by units of a militia led by Khamis, a son of the Libyan leader.

"Very, very heavy fighting
... as opposed to the more usual light or sporadic fighting...
is taking place now at the western entrance of the town. The fighting started about an hour ago after an attack by brigades belonging to Khamis," resident Mohamed said by telephone. "They are destroying everything they find. They are using artillery and tanks," he said.

Sustained artillery fire was heard on the road to the Libyan flash point of Bin Jawad, the site of deadly festivities between rebels and regime loyalists on Sunday.

Rebels said earlier on Sunday that they had withdrawn from Bin Jawad after being ambushed by Qadaffy forces and coming under heavy fire. Near the last checkpoint on the edge of Ras Lanouf, about 30 minutes' drive from Bin Jawad, excitable rebels on the highway pointed to the sky and opened fire with anti-aircraft machine guns. An aircraft was seen flying overhead and then suddenly smoke shot up from the horizon about four km away.

Qaeda shootouts kill six troops in Yemen
[Arab News] Suspected Al-Qaeda gunnies killed six soldiers, including two officers, in three separate attacks Sunday in several restive regions.

Unidentified gunnies believed to be from Al-Qaeda rubbed out four soldiers from Yemen's elite Republican Guard near Marib, about 170 km east of Sanaa, a local official said.

"The attack was similar to others by Al-Qaeda," he added.

Al-Qaeda snuffies shot and killed an army intelligence officer in the city of Zinjibar, in southern Abyan province, a local official said.

Col. Abdulhamid Al-Sharaabi "was in the market when two men riding a cycle of violence attacked him, with one of them shooting him. He died instantly, while the two men bravely ran away," the official said.

Another officer was later rubbed out in the city of Sayun, in the eastern province of Hadramut, by gunnies suspected to be from Al-Qaeda, a security official said.

Two gunnies on a cycle of violence bumped off Col. Shayef Al-Shuaibi at a restaurant, witnesses said. Shuaibi was hit in the head and died instantly, they said.

Al-Qaeda snuffies have regrouped in the southern Arabian Peninsula state, particularly in Marib, Abyan and Hadramut.

US tells citizens to get out of Yemen
The United States warned citizens in Yemen on Sunday to consider departing as protests seeking the ouster of President President-for-Life Ali Abdullah Saleh
... Saleh initially took power as a strongman of North Yemen in 1977, when disco was in flower, after serving as a lieutenant colonel in the army. He had been part of the conspiracy that bumped off his predecessor, Ibrahim al-Hamdi, in the usual tiresome military coup, and he has maintained power by keeping Yemen's many tribes fighting with each other, rather than uniting to string him up. ...
gather momentum, saying the security risk in the impoverished state was extremely high.

"The Department (of State) urges US citizens not to travel to Yemen. US citizens currently in Yemen should consider departing," the US State Department said in a travel warning.

"The security threat level in Yemen is extremely high due to terrorist activities and civil unrest." The growing Yemeni protests, and a series of defections from Saleh's allies, have added pressure on Saleh to end his three-decade rule. Neither side appears willing to compromise.

"The country is on the brink of imploding," said Dubai-based security analyst Theodore Karasik. "This popular uprising is going to hit some kind of crescendo and you might have an outbreak of more violence. We might be looking at a Libya situation emerging in Yemen."

Mohammed Sabri, a leading member of the opposition Common Forum, vowed to step up anti-government demonstrations which have left at least 19 people dead since Feb. 16.

"We have called upon the people to widen demonstrations and escalate the peaceful struggle in all regions until he (Saleh) is left with one option, that is to leave," he said.

Bahrain move to create 20,000 jobs lauded; PM's office circled
[Arab News] The Bahraini king's order to create 20,000 new government jobs has been welcomed by the opposition.
That's a lotta mailmen...
The move follows King Hamad bin Isa Al-Khalifa's instruction to Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al-Khalifa to lead talks with the opposition.

Bahrain's Minister of Interior Sheikh Rashed bin Abdullah Al-Khalifa told local newspaper editors that King Hamad had ordered a round of new hires in a number of government institutions, including 20,000 jobs in his ministry.

"We hope this step will have a positive effect on the safety and security of citizens," Al-Wasat daily quoted the minister as saying. "The minister said national dialogue was the way to achieve political stability and raise demands."

Senior opposition leader Muneera Fakhro described it as a welcome development. "The government's decision to recruit 20,000 youngsters into the Ministry of Interior will help integrate members of the deprived sections of society into the country's mainstream," she said.

According to Fakhro, this will build confidence among people and help the government tide over the current crisis. "This is also a good decision because these youngsters are Bahrainis and they will help defend the country in a better way. This will also remove suspicions among a large section of society, which felt that it was not being trusted by the government."

Fakhro said this is one more confidence building measure and will put more pressure on the opposition parties to come to the negotiating table now. "The government has gone the extra mile and now the opposition parties have to respond positively. There is a lot of optimism in the air now," she added.

Mansoor Al-Jamri, editor in chief of the opposition-leaning Al-Wasat newspaper, was not too impressed with the decision. "This move is coming at a time when the government is facing a crisis. It will therefore not go down very well with the population," he said.

According to Al-Jamri, such measures are isolationist and will not have a great impact. "What is required at this stage is a comprehensive political package to take into consideration all demands of the opposition," he said.

Measures such as the recruitment of 20,000 youngsters will not carry much weight if they are not supported by a holistic political reform, he added.

"I think it's mainly meant for the opposition, in particular for the coming graduates. Unequal opportunities is one reason why we're having people in the street," Jasim Husain of Wefaq, said. "The Ministry of Interior has been slow in creating jobs."

Meanwhile,
...back at the ranch...
thousands of opposition supporters blocked on Sunday the entrance to Gudaibiya Palace -- where Bahrain's Cabinet meets -- but failed to disrupt a government meeting as the campaign for reform enters its third week.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman Al-Khalifa, the prime minister and the king's uncle, who has been in power for 40 years, was presiding over the meeting.

White-helmeted police with riot shields stood behind one gate, looking on as the flag-waving demonstrators chanted "Down Hamad! Down Hamad!," in reference to Bahrain's king. "The people want to topple the regime!" the protesters roared, shaking their fists toward the light pink palace with its pearl-colored dome.

The state news agency BNA said that the gathering went ahead as usual, despite the protests outside.

"The government supports freedom of expression, in a peaceful way, which is guaranteed by the constitution," Kamal Ahmed, the minister for Cabinet affairs, said according to BNA.

But the Cabinet warned against "harming the public, commercial and economic interests," he said, adding that "jeopardizing the interests of the people ... goes against the calls for calm and dialogue."

In a statement released Sunday, Bahrain's Chamber of Commerce said that "general economic conditions in the kingdom are very difficult." The island's tourism industry was hit the hardest, the statement said, adding that the revenue fell "by about 80 percent" and the losses stemming from damage to the sector were estimated in "hundreds of millions of dollars."

"Hey Khalifa, get out! Get out!" demonstrators chanted. "We want the prime minister to go," said Alaa Al-Nasr, a 24-year-old demonstrator.

Another protester, 42-year-old Osama Al-Nuwain, agreed. "It's mainly against Sheikh Khalifa -- they want this government to go," said Nuwain.

Protesters also chanted for the 2002 constitution, which established an appointed upper house that has veto powers over the decisions of the elected chamber, to be scrapped.

"The 2002 constitution falls for the sake of Bahrain," demonstrators chorused in a refrain that rhymes in Arabic.

"Our problem is a political one," Sheikh Ali Salman, the head of the opposition Islamic National Accord Association, or Al-Wefaq, told the crowd of protesters.

"We need political reforms -- lead the people to elect their government, and not a government that remains on our chests for 40 years, with all its failure," he said.

The government warned Sunday against sliding into sectarianism saying "acts that perpetuate sectarianism and sedition are rejected by the people and the religion," BNA reported.

Gunman attacks diplomats' car in Karachi
[Arab News] A gunman in Pakistain opened fire on a car carrying Qatar's consul and two other Gulf diplomats in an apparent robbery attempt, but no injuries were reported, Qatar's state-run news agency said Sunday.

Pak police confirmed an attempted robbery on a Qatari mission vehicle in the southern city of Bloody Karachi but gave conflicting accounts on whether any diplomats were directly targeted.

The Qatar News Agency said the assailant tried to open the car door Saturday, then fired shots at the vehicle from a pistol. The Qatari official was accompanied by Oman's consul and the deputy consul for Kuwait, but no one was injured, the agency said.

Fayyaz Leghri, the top police official in Sindh province, said armed robbers went after an escort vehicle in the Qatari consul's convoy. But the consul himself was not directly targeted, said Leghri, who did not say if shots were fired or if any other diplomats were in other vehicles in the convoy.

However,
The infamous However...
another senior Pak police official said two gunnies on a cycle of violence held up a van carrying the consul. A police guard in the vehicle gave them some money and a cell phone.

As the robbers sped away, one fired a bullet at the van, hitting it from behind, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation. He said other diplomats were believed to be in the van, but he did not know who. An American CIA security contractor is on trial in Pakistain after shooting dead two men in the eastern city of Lahore whom he alleges were trying to rob him.

The US claims the contractor has diplomatic immunity from prosecution, but Pakistain's government has said the matter is up to the courts, a stance that has further strained the counterterrorism allies' rocky relationship.

Another blasphemer murdered in Pakistan
[DPA]- Another alleged blasphemer has become a victim of Pakistan's controversial religious laws, media reported on Saturday.

The killing occurred on Friday, two days after the assassination of the minority affairs minister who had criticised the nation's blasphemy laws.

The Dawn newspaper said Mohammad Imran was killed by masked gunmen in a shop near a bus stop in Danada village of Rawalpindi, a garrison city adjacent to the capital Islamabad.

Imran had been charged with blasphemy in April 2009 for allegedly making insulting remarks about prophet Mohammed during a discussion in a village cafe. He and another defendant were set free by a court order after the prosecution failed to produce evidence.

A policeman said two of the attackers entered the shop while the third stayed outside.

'After spotting the target, they opened fire, killing Imran on the sport and escaped,' Mehmood Ahmed said.

Muhammad Akramm, elder brother of the victim, said his brother was killed by a man from a nearby village who had originally accused him of blasphemy.

The blasphemy law was decreed in 1986 by military dictator General Zia ul Haq, and carries the death sentence for derogatory remarks against the prophet Mohammed and the Koran.

No one has been hanged under the law, but several people have been killed by extremists, including those set free by the courts.

Iraq
Six killed in south Iraq blast
[Asharq al-Aswat] A roadside kaboom killed six people and maimed 12 aboard a bus in Iraq's southern port city of Basra on Sunday, a provincial official said.

The blast had targeted a passing US military convoy, according to Ali al-Ghanimi, the head of Basra provincial council's security committee, but instead struck the bus and wrecked it.

Women and children were among the casualties of the 10:00 am (0700 GMT) attack near a train station in the al-Maakal district of northern Basra, Ghanimi said, but it was unclear how many of them died or were maimed.

The US military did not immediately respond to requests for comment from AFP on the incident.

Violence has declined dramatically across Iraq since its peak in 2006 and 2007, but attacks remain common, with 197 people dying as a result of violence in February.

The presence of US forces in Iraq's streets is also rare -- the 50,000-odd troops stationed in the country are mainly tasked with training and equipping their Iraqi counterparts, though they do still conduct joint counter-terror operations.

All US forces must withdraw from Iraq by the end of the year, under the terms of a bilateral security agreement.

#1  They aimed at U.S. forces, but killed a bus load of their own people. Lovely people these "violent extremists," are they not?

Jordan Islamists demonstrate demanding freedom for jailed relatives
[Arab News] Hundreds of Jordanian Islamists demonstrated in front of the prime minister's office on Sunday to press for the release of their jugged relatives.

The protesters, mostly followers of the Salafi and Jihad groups, rolled their eyes, jumped up and down, and hollered poorly rhymed slogans real loud and raised placards alleging that their relatives were jugged to "satisfy the United States and Israel."

Scores of Islamists were condemned and sentenced to long jail terms over the past few years after being found guilty by the State Security Court of involvement in plots, including plans to travel to fight against US troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

#1  Remember that some of these birds tried to blow up their central government building with one or more truck bombs, slaughtering hundreds of Jordanians. Not a whole lot of sympathy for those devils.

Ex-policeman, monk killed in southern Thailand
A spate of terrorist attacks in southern Thailand on Sunday left a retired policeman and a monk dead and many people injured. In Pattani province, masked men on three motorcycles opened fire at people shopping and working out near a local road in the morning.

Police Sgt Sanan Sangkasunya, 64, died from his injuries at the hospital while the other four victims, including Muhammad Isris Pathan, 18, were seriously wounded.

Mr Muhammad's father Yula said the terrorists insurgents should not have attacked the general public.

In Pattani province, two men shot a man and his mother while they were travelling on their motorcycle.

Nattakorn Jantip, 23, was instantly killed but his mother was not hit. She sustained minor injuries from falling off of the bike.

Also in Pattani, a 32-year-old soldier was shot and seriously injured while on patrol. At almost the same time, unknown men launched an M79 grenade at a checkpoint on the Pattani-Yala Road then opened fire. After a fierce three minute exchange, the attackers withdrew. No one was hurt.
