's group attack on 215 Maiwand Corps in the southern province ended on Saturday at around 4pm Kabul time.

According to the sources, the attack has left at least 50 dead and more than 40 maimed.

The attack on the military base which is located at Camp Shorab in Helmand started at around 2am on Friday.

Some attackers had hidden at one corner of the military base inside armored vehicles which delayed the clearance operation, sources said.
That explains the earlier confusion.
The Ministry of Defense on Friday evening announced that the attack ended after 16 hours. The ministry said 23 security force members were killed and 16 others were maimed in the festivities. At least 20 murderous Moslems, including eight jacket wallahs, were killed in the attack, the ministry said in a statement.

Taliban grabbed credit for the attack.

US Military Says Airstrike In Somalia Kills 26 Al-Shabab
[RadioShabelle] The United States military says it has killed 26 fighters with the al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
murderous Moslem group with an Arclight airstrike in central Somalia, after a pair of strikes earlier this week killed 55.

The U.S. Africa Command says the attack occurred Thursday in the Hiran region, where the others took place.

The airstrike was announced shortly after Somali authorities said a deadly overnight siege by al-Shabaab had ended in the capital, Mogadishu, with all attackers killed.

The U.S. has dramatically increased airstrikes against the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabaab, Africa’s deadliest murderous Moslem group since President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
took office.

The U.S. has carried out 24 strikes this year.

Authorities and experts acknowledge that it will take more than airstrikes to defeat the murderous Moslem group, which holds large parts of rural central and southern Somalia.
But it must be admitted that both the boots on the ground and the hearts & minds pieces are ever so much easier when the bodies of the bad guys are heaped up in piles off to the side somewhere.

Mogadishu car bomb attack final count
Updating this story from yesterday.
[AnNahar] At least 20 people died in an attack in the Somali capital Mogadishu, which saw al-Shabaab
... Somalia's version of the Taliban, functioning as an arm of al-Qaeda...
faceless myrmidons battling security forces for nearly 24 hours before the siege ended, officials said Saturday.

As the standoff ended, the government vowed to step up efforts to fight the jihadists, with the deadly siege the latest in a long line of bombing and assaults claimed by the al-Qaeda-linked group.

"The Somali government will never stop its war on al-Shabaab, our aim is to be done with them, whatever the cost," Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire told news hounds late on Friday.

The premier also praised the courage of the elite soldiers who he said had rescued 35 civilians used as "human shields" by the assailants.

The attack began on Thursday evening at around 1800 GMT, when a Shabaab bad boy in a car went kaboom!, causing a huge blast that ripped the front off a major hotel and left several cars in flames on the busy street.

Other fighters then stormed inside a building housing a restaurant, where they were quickly surrounded by police.

Medics pulled five bodies from the wreckage immediately after the kaboom, but the recovery of more bodies was blocked for hours by the ensuing fighting.

Sporadic shooting continued until officials finally declared an end to the siege late Friday afternoon.

"Our teams have recovered one more dead body after the operation was over and this makes the overall number of the confirmed dead 20," Aamin Ambulance director Abdikadir Abdirahman told AFP on Saturday.

At least 112 people were admitted to the city's three main hospitals, medical sources said.

- 'MARTYRDOM-SEEKING' ATTACK -
At a presser, Somali security forces held up photos showing the alleged bodies of four of the attackers.

In a statement posted on a pro-Shabaab website, the snuffies confirmed that four of their number had been killed, adding that others had managed to escape.

Indian, Pakistani forces suffer heavy casualties after clashes in Kashmir region
[ALMASDARNEWS] At least two Pak soldiers were killed this morning when the Indian Army unleashed a barrage of artillery shells towards the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed Kashmire region.

According to the Pak Ministry of Defense, two of their soldiers were killed after the Indian military fired artillery shells towards the Naykal Sector.

This latest attack by the Indian Army comes just hours after the Pak military released a captured IAF pilot that was shot down over the Kashmire region on Wednesday.

Following the Indian Army’s attack on the Naykal Sector, the Pak military unleashed a barrage of their own.

According to a source from the Pak armed forces, their attack resulted in the death of eight Indian soldiers and the hospitalization of 32 paramilitary troops.

With the rise of violence in the disputed Kashmire region, both the Indian and Pak armed forces have been placed on high alert in case a new conflict were to breakout.
The Daily Mail adds more about the flying ancestors of briefly captured Indian Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman:
His father - Air Marshal Varthaman, himself a retired pilot - and mother Shobha Varthaman had earned warm applause as they took their seats on a flight from Chennai to Delhi to see their son.

The pilot's grandfather was also in the Indian Air Force and his wife is a former helicopter pilot, Indian media reported.

India, Pakistan border festivities continue after pilot's release

[Aljazeera] Indian and Pakistani soldiers again targeted each other's posts and villages along their volatile frontier in the disputed region of Kashmir, killing at least five civilians and two soldiers, and wounding several others, officials on both sides said.

The nuclear-armed rivals fired mortars and artillery at each other despite the release of an Indian pilot who was shot down by Pakistan, but then sent back as a "peace gesture".

Kashmiris living near disputed border fear for safety (2:02)
Fighting resumed overnight into dawn on Saturday, leaving two siblings and their mother dead in Indian-administered Kashmir.

The three died after a shell fired by Pakistani soldiers hit their home in Poonch region near the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the Himalayan territory of Kashmir between the two nuclear-armed rivals, police said.

"At 6pm, Pakistan started shelling, which went on for three hours. One of the shells hit by Pakistan hit the house, in which three members of a family were killed, including two innocent children," Poonch resident Mohammad Saleem told Al Jazeera.

The children's father was critically wounded and has been admitted to hospital.

Reporting from New Delhi, Al Jazeera's Sohail Rahman said residents in Uri, 50km from Poonch, were moved to safer areas due to the heavy shelling from Pakistan along the LoC.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
Israel hits Hamas sites after balloons with 'explosive device'
[Agence France Press via the Daily Star Lebanon] GAZA CITY, Palestine: Israeli aircraft have struck two Hamas observation points in the Gaza Strip, a security source said Sunday, after the army reported balloons carrying an "explosive device" were sent toward Israel.

No injuries occurred from the strikes late Saturday east of al-Bureij in the central Gaza Strip and east of Rafah in the south of the blockaded enclave run by Islamist movement Hamas, according to a Hamas security source.

The strikes occurred after a "cluster of balloons carrying an explosive device was launched from the Gaza Strip towards Israeli territory," the Israeli army said in a statement.

"No injuries or damage were reported," it said.

Late Wednesday, Israeli aircraft targeted several militant sites in Gaza after an "explosive balloon" launched from the Palestinian enclave damaged a house in Israel.

Palestinians in Gaza have for months been sporadically launching balloons with incendiary and explosive devices at southern Israel in parallel with weekly protests and clashes taking place at the fence.

At least 251 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire since March 2018, the majority shot during weekly border protests and others hit by tank fire or air strikes in response to violence from Gaza.

Two Israeli soldiers have been killed over the same period.

Israel and Hamas have fought three wars since 2008.

Fatah officials said at least 100 of their members were detained by Hamas in the past week. The crackdown, according to the officials, came in response to demonstrations organized by Fatah to express support for Paleostinian Authority President the ineffectual Mahmoud Abbas

The things the locals have to do to get a paycheck in Hamas’s little totalitarian statelet.
[IsraelTimes] No damage or injuries reported; Israeli military uses riot dispersal methods to keep demonstrators away from border fence.

The Israeli army said Saturday evening its aircraft fired at targets in the southern Gazoo Strip in response to a cluster of balloons attached to an incendiary device that was launched from the Strip toward Israel.

The arson balloons did not cause any injuries or damage.

In a statement, the Israel Defense Forces called the targets "Hamas, a regional Iranian catspaw, military posts."

Earlier on Saturday, violent festivities between Paleostinian demonstrators and Israeli soldiers broke out along the border fence. IDF soldiers used riot dispersal methods to keep the demonstrators away from the border fence, the Walla news site reported.

Thai soldier gunned down after football match
[Bangkok Post] Two men on a motorcycle shot and killed a Thai soldier as he returned to his base after playing football in Narathiwat province on Thursday evening.

Police said Ekamarin Sriraksa was hit by six bullets when attacked along the Bacho-Ban Thon Road in Bacho district about 6:30pm. They said Ekamarin had ridden his motorcycle alone from his base at Wat Urai Ratanaram to play football at the field of the Bacho tambon administration organization. On his way back, two men on another motorcycle approached him from behind. Witnesses said the pillion rider fired gunshots at him.

Officials who inspected the scene said the trail of blood showed the stricken soldier tried to run for life into a roadside forest but the gunman followed him and fired more shots, killing him.

Police blamed separatist militants.

Syria-Lebanon-Iran
Syrian Army kills 7 ISIS fighters attempting to escape from Euphrates bastion, SDF advancing on 5 fronts, 3 wounded
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) reportedly killed seven members of the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) that were attempting to flee their Euphrates bastion this morning.

According to a military communique, the Syrian Arab Army observed seven armed Islamic State fighters attempting to escape the Baghouz camp via the Euphrates River this morning.

Following their attempt to cross the Euphrates, the Islamic State fighters found themselves facing heavy gunfire by the Syrian Arab Army troops that were positioned on the western bank of the river.

The Syrian Arab Army has been closely monitoring the ongoing battle to eliminate the Islamic State from the eastern region of the Euphrates River Valley.

ISIS has repeatedly wrecked havoc on the Syrian Arab Army’s defenses from Baghouz Fouqani in the past, as the terrorist group often targets the key border city of Albukamal.

'We expect it to be over soon' - US-backed SDF in Baghouz
Videos at the link. See also #Baghouz and #SDF on Twitter.
[Rudaw] The fight against ISIS in al-Baghouz, Syria, is expected "to be over soon," stated the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on Saturday which are backed by the US-led international coalition.

"We expect it to be over soon," Mustafa Bali, the spokesperson for the SDF media office, tweeted on Saturday morning.

"SDF’s been advancing on two fronts into Daesh-held territory since yesterday evening. Heavy clashes are taking place atm [at the moment]. 3 SDF fighters got wounded so far. No information on casualties of ISIS yet," he added.

People speaking Kurdish apparently holding a mobile device with a map of the area explain that their comrades are advancing in a video released by the Peoples' Protection Units (YPG). Rudaw could not independently verify the video.

They added that "our friends" have come from Hasakah, an apparent reference to YPG reinforcing the SDF in Baghouz.

YPG also described overnight clashes as "heavy."

"SDF forces are advancing on 5 fronts," they wrote on Facebook. "They face an estimated 1000-1500 ISIS fighters and difficult terrain: suicide bombers, mines and a large tunnel network."

Later on Saturday, Bali posted video from the outskirts of al-Baghouz town showing destroyed buildings and an SDF fighter firing an AK-47 from behind cover.

The Women's Defense Units (YPJ), the female counterpart to the YPG, said ISIS fighters are the taking "their last breath" because they are "besieged."

"Their weapons depots have been targeted," added the YPJ. "Six positions ISIS had been using against the advancing forces have been reclaimed from the group."

The Rojava Information Center, a media outlet close to the ruling Democratic Federation of Northern Syria, reported the US-led coalition only conducted two air strikes on Saturday. The Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS says it will continue to support efforts in Syria, but did not reveal the number of its strikes in Syria on Saturday.

"The Coalition continues to support the SDF with airstrikes when needed, and our multifaceted advise and assist role," its spokesperson told Rudaw English on Saturday evening.

US Army Col. Sean Ryan explained that the situation in al-Baghouz is very dynamic, but the SDF is doing "outstanding work."
The Times of Israel adds:
Bali would not speculate on how long the military operation might take but said he expects a “fierce battle.” He said the battles are expected to take place in a very small area that includes a complex network of tunnels, as well as suicide bombers and land mines.

SDF commander Adnan Afrin said he expects “resistance” from the remaining fighters who are likely to deploy all their weapons, including suicide bombers. He said most of the remaining fighters are Europeans, Asians, Iraqis and Arabs from the area.

On Friday, the smallest batch of evacuees, just over 200, came out of the pocket in around six trucks used to transport sheep. About 10 trucks sent to the perimeter of the IS pocket came back empty, and drivers said no more evacuees came out after hours of waiting. The evacuees Friday included wounded men but were mostly women and children. There were Russians, Indonesians, Bosnians, Dagestani, Kazaks, Egyptians, Syrians and Iraqis. They dragged along few belongings, distraught children and broken spirits.
From the Jerusalem Post:
For the SDF, the last battle has been difficult and harrowing. Yazidi slaves, kidnapped by ISIS in 2014 in Sinjar in Iraq, have been found among those leaving Baghuz. These include traumatized children. Locals have also reported they found at least one mass grave, and videos have appeared showing ISIS massacring civilians. This area of the Euphrates was not only a conduit for ISIS to sell Yazidis as slaves, it was also where they had massacred members of the local al-Shaitat tribe. The area of Abu Hamam up river from Baghuz was badly affected by the ISIS massacre of the locals.

Gunfire could be heard in the morning as houses were cleared. While the last battle unfolds, much of what comes next is unclear. There has been little in the way of commitment from the members of the Coalition for housing the former ISIS members or a plan to de-radicalize and prosecute them. Yazidi activists in Sinjar protested on Friday, demanding answers about the 3,000 Yazidis who are still missing. Nadia Murad and the Yazidi organization Yazda posted a statement recalling the murder of 5,000 Yazidis in 2014 and the abduction of 6,000. They want answers in Baghuz about the fate of their loved ones.
And from An Nahar:
As the sun rose above the palm trees lining the Euphrates River, the crackle and thud of gunfire and shelling echoed across the farmland while SDF artillery units could be seen taking up positions, AFP journalists near the front line reported.

An SDF officer said he saw jihadists moving between empty buildings and a makeshift camp on the edge of the village where it is feared civilians might still be hunkered down.

The jihadists are cornered in a bend of the Euphrates, with Syrian government forces and their allies on the west bank of the Euphrates blocking any escape across the river and Iraqi government forces blocking any move downstream.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said seven IS fighters were shot dead by Syria government forces and allied Iranian militiamen.

The SDF this week announced that yet another mass grave was discovered, this time near Baghouz, and that the severed heads of women were found in it.

While the victims were not immediately identified, local fighters believe the executed women are likely to be members of the Yazidi community.
Penultimately, Al Ahram adds:
Mustafa Bali, a spokesman for the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) told Reuters the SDF were advancing on two fronts using medium and heavy weaponry, and three of its fighters had been wounded so far. The SDF has previously said that many of the jihadists left in Baghouz were foreigners.
Finally, the Daily Mail:
Fighters were backed by helicopters and drones as they closed in on the terror group’s last bastion close to the Iraq border.

Desperate IS fighters, many of them foreigners, used booby- traps in a last-ditch attempt to stop the crushing of their self-declared caliphate.

One SDF commander said his forces held a strong position on a hill by the town, but IS fighters still occupied ‘six or seven’ key points and were relying on a network of ‘fighting tunnels’ burrowed beneath the battlefield.

The SDF fear that IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi may have escaped through one of the tunnels to Iraq.

Local sources claimed Western special forces were using rapid-hardening foam to trap those hiding in caves and tunnels.

Idlib: Ten Islamic State Members Executed By Rival Jihadists In Northwest Syria
[Jpost] Ten members of Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear the pols talk they're not really Moslems....
were summarily executed in Syria's Idlib province on Saturday by Tahrir al-Sham
, according to Ebaa News Agency, a news outlet that supports the rival jihadist alliance.

Ebaa said the executions were in response to an Islamic State suicide kaboom at a restaurant in Idlib a day earlier.

Ebaa quoted Anis al-Shami, a security official from Tahrir al-Sham, saying that the executions "today at the scene of the crime are fair punishment which might deter them and wake them from their stupor."

It published images showing masked button men in fatigues firing handguns at the heads of 10 bearded men who sat in front of them on the pavement. Rooters could not independently verify the agency's report.

Tahrir al-Sham is the main jihadist group in northwest Syria, with a large armed presence throughout Idlib including along the Ottoman Turkish border.
