Clashes in Maidan Wardak Leave Nine Dead: MoI
I think this might be characterized as local warlord gets feisty.
[ToloNews] The Ministry of Interior Affairs (MoI) says that at least nine people were killed after their protest turned violent mostly peaceful and ended up in a clash between security forces and gunnies loyal to Alipoor, a local commander, in the Behsud district of Maidan Wardak province on Friday.

The ministry said a team has been assigned to investigate the incident.

According to the ministry, the festivities erupted after a group of people, among them "irresponsible gunnies" loyal to commander Alipoor, resisted the appointment of new police commanders in the district by holding a protest outside the police headquarters.

Eight Security Force Members Killed in Nangarhar Blast: Official
[ToloNews] Eight security force members were killed in a boom-mobile explosion that targeted a civil order forces unit in Shirzad district of the eastern province of Nangarhar
The unfortunate Afghan province located adjacent to Mohmand, Kurram, and Khyber Agencies. The capital is Jalalabad. The province was the fief of Younus Khalis after the Soviets departed and one of his sons is the current provincial Taliban commander. Nangarhar is Haqqani country..
on Saturday morning, the provincial governor’s office confirmed.

The civil order forces unit operates under the Afghan National Army, according to local officials.

The explosion happened in the Gandumak area in Shirzad district, a statement by the Nangarhar governor’s office read.

Meanwhile,
...back at the pond, Gloria slowly backed away from the eight-foot bull frog. If the creature croaked she would surely be deafened...
Obaidullah Shinwari, the deputy head of the provincial council in Nangarhar, said that at least 14 security force members were killed in the attack.

Taliban
...Arabic for students...

An Nahar adds:
The eight were killed when the bomber hit the base with a Humvee, the office of Nangarhar's governor said in a statement.

The deputy head of Nangarhar provincial council, Ajmal Omar, confirmed the attack but put the number of dead soldiers at 15 with five maimed.

Key Northern Highways Face Security Threats: Residents
[ToloNews] Key routes in northern Afghanistan including the Baghlan-Kunduz and Baghlan-Balkh highways remain insecure for commuters, residents of the provinces said, adding that the Taliban
...the Pashtun equivalent of men...
has established checkpoints close to the government forces' establishments in some areas.

The residents said less attention has been paid to the matter as in some areas, the Taliban are seen 500 meters away from the government’s security checkpoints.

According to the residents, other routes connecting to the highways also remain insecure due to Taliban presence.

"The city of Pul-e-Khumri in Baghlan is under the Taliban threat. Areas close to the city like the Kelagai area are under the Taliban influence," said Sher Mohammad, a Baghlan resident.

"There are bases in different areas, but the Taliban is extorting in the middle," said Amir Mohammad, a Baghlan resident.

The Baghlan-Kunduz and Baghlan-Balkh highways have been witnessing insecurity for months. Two weeks ago, special forces removed Taliban checkpoints from the Baghlan-Balkh highway, according to Defense Ministry. But residents said the Taliban has returned to the area.

"Threats exist in three main highways in Baghlan," said Samiuddin Nazer, a member of the provincial council in Baghlan.

The Ministry of Defense said the Afghan cops continue their patrolling along those highways on regular basis.

"The areas along the highways where the Taliban did extortion were destroyed. The security forces will not allow the Taliban to pose harms to the people along the highways," a front man for the Defense Ministry Fawad Aman said.
When you need the Afghan police in seconds, they’re only hours away. It’s time to set up local patrols.

Shaboobs get whacked in latest Somali army crackdown
[Garowe] MOGADISHU, Somalia -- The Al-Shabaab militants on Friday suffered a huge blow following the crackdown engineered by the Somali National Army [SNA], who have been instrumental in crushing the terror group, which still controls large swathes of rural central and southern Somalia.

During the operation carried out at Dinsor town within the Bay region in Southern Somalia, at least five Al-Shabaab militants were killed, in the most recent success against the militants, who have been wreaking havoc across the Horn of Africa nation.

Ibrahim Aden, who is the operations commander, said the militants were planning to attack a contingent of SNA soldiers within the region, necessitating the counterattack by the alert soldiers, who did not suffer any casualties during the incident.

Dozens of Al-Shabaab militants were injured during the operation and have since been seized by the military for further interrogation. Traditionally, such captives are subjected to a rigorous military court, which defines punishments for terrorists.
I wouldn't want to be one of them right now...
The commander urged residents to cooperate with the army, arguing that a safe Somalia means "peace and stability" within the Horn of Africa and across East Africa. The Al-Shabaab militants have the ability to wage attacks across the borders of Somalia.

Later this year, the Somali National Army is set to take over security responsibilities from a number of foreign troops serving in the country, especially those from the African Union Mission in Somalia.
Yup, any day now...

Saudi-led coalition destroys explosive-laden drone fired by Yemen's Houthis
[AlAhram] The Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen
...an area of the Arabian Peninsula sometimes mistaken for a country. It is populated by more antagonistic tribes and factions than you can keep track of...
said on Saturday it had destroyed in Yemeni airspace a drone armed with explosives that was launched by the Iran-aligned Iran's Houthi sock puppets
...a Zaidi Shia insurgent group operating in Yemen. They have also been referred to as the Believing Youth. Hussein Badreddin al-Houthi is said to be the spiritual leader of the group and most of the military leaders are his relatives. The legitimate Yemeni government has accused the them of having ties to the Iranian government. Honest they did. The group has managed to gain control over all of Saada Governorate and parts of Amran, Al Jawf and Hajjah Governorates. Its slogan is God is Great, Death to America™, Death to Israel, a curse on the Jews They like shooting off... ummm... missiles that they would have us believe they make at home in their basements. On the plus side, they did murder Ali Abdullah Saleh, which was the only way the country was ever going to be rid of him...

Soddies stop Houthi infiltration in Saada
[SouthFront] On January 29, Saudi-backed forces thwarted an infiltration by the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in the northern Yemeni province of Saada.

According to the al-Arabiya TV, Houthi fighters attempted to infiltrate Saudi-led coalition defenses west of the al-Tibab al-Suwd hills in the district of Baqim. The district is located near the border with the Saudi province of ‘Asir.

“The infiltration attempt by the terrorist Houthi militias west of al-Tibab al-Suwd is the most violent since the middle of last year,” Col. Hilal al-Abbasi of the Saudi-backed 5th Border Guard Brigade told the UAE-based channel.

Col. al-Abbasi added that several armored vehicles of the Houthis were targeted by the artillery of Saudi-backed forces while heading to Baqim’s center.

According to al-Arabiya, seven Houthi fighters were killed by Saudi-backed forces. Several vehicles of the Yemeni group were also destroyed.

More on the small bomb near the Israeli embassy in Delhi
[KhaamaPress] The crude bomb was placed in a flower pot on the road divider, but a letter was found nearby that described the blast as a "trailer", and referred to two Iranians killed "Qasem Soleimani
...charismatic and connected commander of the IRGC’s Al Quds Force, which is responsible for Iran’s external jihad efforts, and right-hand man to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. He was assassinated by an American drone near Baghdad International Airport in early 2020 while on a flying visit to supervise the Popular Mobilization Forces attacking American bases and the Green Zone. His successor is neither charismatic nor connected...
and Mohsen Fakhrizadeh"
...head of Iran’s nuclear bomb program until he was assassinated last November — the furious Iranians claim by an Israeli satellite-controlled gun (while seductive Israeli women danced in the street to distract his driver into holding still)...
, the Indian Express reported.

Indian Express quoted unknown sources, that "Forensic experts have found broken pieces of a cold drink can and ball bearings from the spot. Prime facie it appears that explosives and ball bearings were stuffed in the can. It was planted in such a manner that the impact was felt towards the road. The ball bearings hit the cars. Police have not found any device or battery at the spot,".

The bomb is said to have went off at around 5 pm in the evening on Friday.
The Times of Israel adds:
India Today TV reported that police were questioning Iranian nationals in connection with the earth-shattering kaboom.

Israel’s Ambassador to India Ron Malka said Saturday that the embassy in New Delhi had been on high alert because of "threats" it had been preparing for, even before the small bomb went off outside the mission.

Malka told AFP he was not surprised by Friday’s attack, which caused no injuries but blew the windows out of three cars.

The device went kaboom! as India and Israel marked the 29th anniversary of their diplomatic relations, and Malka said the timing was part of the investigation.

Since establishing relations, India and Israel have become close and India is now one of the biggest buyers of Israeli weapons and defense equipment.

Channel 13 said on Friday that it appeared to be a "very primitive" attack, damaging cars but causing no injuries, and did not seem to be the work of a "sophisticated terror cell."

Police were said to be examining CCTV footage which appeared to show two suspects who were wanted for questioning over possible involvement in the blast. The taxi driver who dropped the two near the scene has been questioned, the Times of India reported.

The Walla news site said Saturday that a previously unheard of group called "Jaish ul-Hind" grabbed credit for the Friday explosion in a statement posted on the Telegram messaging service.

According to the report, the statement said the attack was in fact an act of Dire Revenge against the Indian government and that further attacks were expected, but with no mention of Israel.
And from One India:
Investigators are also looking at the role of a group called the Jaish-ul-Hind. A person by the name Vikar had claimed responsibility for the blast on a Telegram group in the ISIS forum that is linked to the Qayam Foundation.

The internet protocol address has been traced to Herat in Afghanistan. However this angle needs to be thoroughly probed as it could be a false flag, officials say. The message posted by Vikar has been forwarded on many groups, but it could be a way of misleading the investigators, officials further pointed out.

Syrian military choppers search for ISIS terrorists in central Syria: video
[AlMasdar] The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has been forced to step up their military operations in central and eastern Syria this week, following another ambush on a passenger bus by the Islamic State
...formerly ISIS or ISIL, depending on your preference. Before that they were al-Qaeda in Iraq, as shaped by Abu Musab Zarqawi. They're really very devout, committing every atrocity they can find in the Koran and inventing a few more. They fling Allah around with every other sentence, but to hear western pols talk they're not really Moslems....
(ISIS/ISIS/IS/ISIS) terrorist group.

According to a field source in the Homs Governorate, the Syrian Arab Army and Russian Armed Forces sent reinforcements to the Palmyra Triangle region, amid a new campaign to eliminate the last remnants of the Islamic State.

Among the areas the Syrian and Russian reinforcements were deployed to were the Palmyra, eastern Hama, and southern al-Raqqa regions, which were previously occupied by the Islamic State during their reign of terror between 2014-2018.

In addition to the influx of ground troops, the Russian and Syrian air forces have intensified their strikes against the Islamic State, while also conducting several combing operations through the Badiya al-Sham region.

In a new video released this week, the Syrian Arab Air Force’s (SyAAF) choppers can be seen combing through the Badiya al-Sham region and ensuring the safety of civilian vehicles along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor International Highway.

Car bomb kills five in pro-Turkey north Syria: Monitor
[AlAhram] A boom-mobile in the Ottoman Turkish-controlled region of Afrin in northern Syria Saturday killed five people including a child, a British-based war monitor said.

The car, which contained explosives, blew up in a neighbourhood where workshops are located, killing the child, three other civilians and an unidentified person, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said the corpse count could rise as 15 other people were maimed, some of them at death's door.

Ottoman Turkish forces and their Syrian proxies grabbed the region of Afrin from Kurdish fighters in 2018.

Afrin and other areas in northern Syria under Ottoman Turkish control are regularly rocked by such bombings.

There is usually no claim for them, although The Sick Man of Europe Turkey
...the only place on the face of the earth that misses the Ottoman Empire...
routinely blames Kurdish fighters it accuses of being "terrorists" linked to its outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

In early January, another explosives-rigged vehicle killed one civilian in the town of Jindires in the Afrin region. The same day, a boom-mobile near a vegetable market in the Ottoman Turkish-held border town of Ras al-Ain killed five people including two children.

In November, a boom-mobile went off near a bakery in Afrin, killing three people and wounding 16 others.

Syria's war has killed more than 387,000 people and displaced millions since starting in 2011 with the brutal repression of anti-government protests.

It has evolved into a complex conflict involving jihadists and foreign powers including Turkey, which has grabbed swathes of Syrian territory along its southern border during several military campaigns.

Kurdish woman executed at Sanandaj Central Prison
[NRTtv] SULAIMANI — A Kurdish woman was executed last week at Sanandaj Central Prison in Iran’s Kurdistan province, Hengaw Organization for Human Rights said on Friday (January 29).

The watchdog group, which reports on human rights abuses in Iranian Kurdistan, said that the woman was hanged on Wednesday.

“The identity of the woman, who was detained on charges of premeditated murder and sentenced to death by Iranian judiciary, has not been clarified,” the group said.

Iranian state media outlets have not reported on the execution so far, it added.

On Friday, the UN Human Rights office condemned the apparent executions of 28 inmates in Iran since mid-December, including several prisoners from minority groups.

On January 18, the Iranian authorities executed a Kurdish inmate on a murder charge at the same prison.

According to Hengaw, 59 ethnic Kurds were executed in Iran during 2020, including four of whom were convicted of political offenses. Fifty-one others were sentenced to death for “premeditated murder.”

In 2019, Iran executed the second most people after China, according to Amnesty International.
