Mauritanian truck driver charged with al-Qaeda link
[Maghrebia] Mauritanian police in the southern border region of Guidimakha arrested a suspected al-Qaeda terrorist on Sunday (January 24th), ANI reported. Moctar Ould Bukhari, who works as a truck-driver between Selibaby in Mauritania and Kaye in Mali, was apprehended in the Senegal river town of Gouray on suspicion of helping al-Qaeda attack military targets in northern Mauritania last year. At the time of his arrest, the suspect was reportedly in possession of unspecified electronic equipment and a Thuraya-model satellite telephone.

Arabia
Yemen rebels announce truce with Saudi Arabia
[Al Arabiya Latest] The leader of Yemen's Houhti rebels declared a ceasefire with Saudi Arabia and said his group would withdraw from the kingdom's territory, Al Arabiya TV reported on Monday.

In an Audio tape released Monday, Houthi said his rebel group would withdraw from all Saudi territories they entered from November 2008.
Got thrown out, did they?
Abdel Malik didn't like getting his pants singed...
"We announce our full withdrawal from all Saudi territory," said Abdul Malik al-Houthi in an audio message, describing his offer as an "initiative."

The rebels said on their website on Sunday that their commander would make an important announcement shortly, but made no mention of a ceasefire.

Yemen's central government has been fighting the rebels, who complain of marginalization, on and off since 2004, but the conflict intensified last summer when Sanaa launched Operation Scorched Earth to quash the latest upsurge in violence.

The war spread to Saudi Arabia in November when rebels seized some Saudi territory, prompting Riyadh to respond with a major military assault against them.

Yemen is also in the throes of a crackdown on al Qaeda, whose regional wing is based in the impoverished Arab country and claimed the bomb attempt on a Detroit-bound plane on Dec. 25. In addition, Sanaa is trying to contain simmering unrest from a southern separatist movement.

Western powers and Riyadh fear Yemen will become a failed state, allowing al Qaeda to exploit chaos to use the country as a base for more international attacks.

The conflict raging in the north has displaced around 175,000 people, according to the United Nations. The area is off-limits to journalists and many international organizations, making death tolls difficult to verify.

Humanitarian conditions in northern Yemen are worse than they have ever been, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said on Monday, adding fighting had "dramatically worsened" the fate of Yemeni civilians.

Bangladesh
5 more jawans plead guilt, beg for mercy
[Bangla Daily Star] Five more of the 62 accused BDR mutineers of 19 Rifle Battalion in Feni pleaded guilty and begged for mercy yesterday at the BDR special court-3.

On January 24, 53 accused mutineers pleaded guilty and begged for mercy during hearing for charge framing. The court, however, framed charges and proceeded with trial, reports a correspondent from Feni.

Eleven more prosecution witnesses gave statements before the three-member special court during the second day's trial proceedings. Three witnesses gave depositions on January 24.

The four who still pleads not guilty are -- Habildar Md Ruhul Amin, sepoys Md Mohiuddin Rony, Bashir Ahmed and Mizanur Rahman.

All 62 accused were taken to the court from the Feni jail.

Fifty-eight accused, who pleaded guilty, sat separately in the court, headed by BDR Director General Maj Gen M Mainul Islam.

Two other members of the court are BDR officials Lt Col Md Akhteruzzaman and Maj Md Maqsudul Alam.

The prosecution said the accused were involved in the mutiny in their battalion at Joylaskar of Dagonbhuiyan upazila following the bloody mutiny at the Pilkhana BDR headquarters.

The accused were allowed to cross-examine witnesses. Maj Awal Uddin Ahmed of Bangladesh Rifles, appointed as "friend of the accused", helped them in cross-examination.

The court adjourned proceedings till March 28.

Lt Col Gazi Md Salahuddin, commander of 19 Rifle Battalion, was present there as prosecutor while Deputy Attorney General Farhad Ahmed helped the court as a representative from the attorney general's office.

Chavez orders TV station off the air
"Rahm! Why can't I order Fox off the air!"
Venezuela President Hugo Chavez's government ordered cable providers on Sunday to stop showing the popular television station RCTV, which had violated regulations requiring broadcasters to televise the socialist leader's long speeches in their entirety.

The measure sent shudders among press freedom advocates and generated concerns in the Obama administration, which is frequently the target of Chavez's barbs. RCTV has been a target of the government in the past. In 2007, the government declined to renew RCTV's license to broadcast on the public airwaves, forcing the station onto cable.

"This is done without a judge's order, without any administrative hearing," Marcel Granier, director of RCTV, said by phone from Caracas. "In no democracy does this happen. Those in the government simply do not tolerate any medium that tells people how things really are."

Houston Area Muslim Goes On Killing Spree -- Kills 5, Beheads 2 Year-Old With Machete
A family dispute pushed Maron Thomas to go on a rampage marked by a fury so intense that he decapitated his 2-year-old niece with a machete after killing her and four other family members, Austin County investigators said Wednesday.

Thomas, 20, was charged Wednesday with capital murder in the shooting deaths of his mother, stepfather, sister, brother and his niece. He remains in the Austin County Jail with bail set at $1 million.

"This is one of the most horrific crimes we've had in Austin County," District Attorney Travis Koehn said. "Austin County is a safe place to live, but unfortunately, we are not immune to the same kinds of crimes that occur in other locations."

Thomas' sister, Ka'Tara Price, 24, of Houston, said she believes anger and Thomas' conversion to the Muslim religion influenced his actions. She said she is not aware of him suffering from any mental illness.
The massacre happened between midnight Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday at the family's home 7 miles outside the Bellville city limits, on FM 1456 between Buckhorn and Cochran.

Thomas then allegedly burglarized a car and was arrested around 3 a.m. after being caught trying to break into a house a mile and a half away while he was naked, investigators said. A neighbor held him at gunpoint until deputies arrived and arrested him on burglary charges. When deputies arrived, he had put on a pair of exercise shorts...

Report says Al-Qaeda still aims to use weapons of mass destruction against U.S.
The report, by a former senior CIA official, Rolf Mowatt-Larssen, who led the agency's hunt for weapons of mass destruction, portrays al-Qaeda's leaders as determined and patient, willing to wait for years to acquire the kind of weapons that could inflict widespread casualties. "If Osama bin Laden and his lieutenants had been interested in . . . small-scale attacks, there is little doubt they could have done so now," he wrote.

Bush administration officials feared that bin Laden was close to obtaining nuclear weapons in 2003 after U.S. spies picked up a cryptic message by a Saudi affiliate of al-Qaeda referring to plans to obtain three stolen Russian nuclear devices. The intercepts prompted the U.S. and Saudi governments to go on alert and later led to an aggressive Saudi crackdown that resulted in the arrest or killing of dozens of suspected al-Qaeda associates.

After that, terrorists' chatter about a possible nuclear acquisition halted abruptly, but U.S. officials were never certain whether the plot was dismantled or simply pushed deeper underground.

"The crackdown was so successful," Mowatt-Larssen said, "that intelligence about the program basically dried up."

Bombs away!
NEW YORK -- There's been more upheaval at the Manhattan trial of a U.S.-trained Pakistani scientist linked to Al Qaeda.

The judge had Aafia Siddiqui removed from the courtroom Monday after she began ranting about the proceedings. Two jurors were removed shortly afterward for unclear reasons and will be replaced by alternates.

Authorities say the 37-year-old Siddiqui was caught in Afghanistan in 2008 carrying notes on bomb-making and a list of landmarks including the Statue of Liberty. She's accused of picking up an unattended rifle and shooting at Americans who were trying to interview her.

Siddiqui is not facing terrorism charges and denies wrongdoing.

#5  Sounds like they've got quite the circus going on down there...

The defendant was ejected from a Lower Manhattan courtroom — not once, but twice — on Monday for loudly proclaiming her innocence. And, in a separate episode between the two ejections, a spectator who pointed his thumb and index finger like a gun at the jury while mouthing an expletive was taken into custody and later released.

The judge later dismissed two jurors who said they felt threatened. “They were visibly upset,” a court official said.

The trial, which is in its second week, is taking place under heavy security in United States District Court, with a metal detector and guards at the courtroom door. Still, there have been breaches. On Monday, Judge Richard M. Berman noted some of them in explaining his ruling against a defense motion for greater public access to the court.

So far, three people have sneaked recording devices into the courtroom, said Judge Berman, adding that one audience member had even passed a cellphone, which is also banned, to a member of the defense team.

“The court finds that the additional security measures are necessary,” the judge announced.

A day of drama also included emotional testimony from the soldier whose M4 rifle was used in the alleged murder attempt, which took place in a police headquarters building in Afghanistan on July 18, 2008. Judge Berman said the soldier’s name was withheld at the prosecution’s request.

That soldier, whose name was entered into the record only as “chief warrant officer,” explained how he had laid his gun on the floor of a room in a show of respect for the Afghans inside, as is customary in that country.

“You don’t talk to somebody with an assault rifle around your neck,” said the witness, who wore a green uniform and walked with a cane because of an unrelated roadside bombing in Afghanistan. At one point, he broke into tears describing that bombing.

The warrant officer testified that Ms. Siddiqui, who had been out of sight and behind a curtain when he had entered the room, grabbed the rifle and hoisted it to her shoulder while aiming it at the Army soldiers and F.B.I. agents in the room.

The warrant officer said he then fired two rounds from his 9-millimeter pistol, hitting Ms. Siddiqui in the abdomen before she was tackled.

On Monday, the warrant officer recreated the scene with the gun from a chair in front of the jury box.

A few minutes later, Ms. Siddiqui — who was twice removed from the court during the first week for outbursts stating she was innocent — launched into her second outburst of the day.

“I never shot it!” she yelled from the table where she sat among her lawyers, before marshals whisked her away. She was kept out of court for the rest of the day.

I bet he wishes he'd have taken her out too...

#7  More...

Two jurors were released from the tumultuous trial of the so-called "Lady Al Qaeda" on Monday, and the defendant was thrown out of the courtroom again - twice.

Sources said the jurors saw a man in the audience motion as if he were firing a gun at them and mouth an obscenity. "They felt they would no longer be fair," said Federal Judge Richard Berman, who spoke to the jurors in private.

In a transcript released Monday night, one juror told the judge he was "really freaked out" by the man "pointing in a gun gesture." A second juror said he would have trouble keeping an open mind "anytime anyone makes what I view as a death threat."

The spectator was questioned and then released.

What's up with that?

The defendant, MIT-trained Pakistani scientist Aafia Siddiqui, was also sent packing twice for speaking during the dramatic testimony of a terribly wounded Special Forces officer. The clandestine soldier, whose identity was limited to his rank - chief warrant officer - limped into the courtroom with a cane and a chestful of medals. He wept when he described the wounds hesustained in an unrelated roadside bombing in September in Afghanistan.

"Three of my men were killed, along with one Afghan," he said. The soldier began crying, and Berman reached over and handed him a tissue.

"Sorry," the witness said, dabbing at his badly scarred face and milky eyes. "I was burned over most of my body," he said. "I've had several skin grafts, lost a couple of organs. Every bone - waist down to my feet - was broken."

As he spoke, Siddiqui said, "I feel sorry for you. Don't do that. It will make America look bad in international court."

Oh, I can't wait for the Khalid Shaikh Mohammed Show...

Heavy firing at India-Pakistan border in J&K, Army on alert
The Indian Army was put on alert following heavy exchange of fire at the India-Pakistan border in Jammu and Kashmir early on Tuesday following a major infiltration bid, defence sources said on Tuesday as the country celebrated its 61st Republic Day.

The firing, at the Kanachak sector near Akhnoor, 30 km northwest from Jammu, started at 2 am and went on four hours. Officials said Pakistani Rangers provided covering fire to a group of infiltrators. The BSF men retaliated and the guns fell silent around 6 am.

The Indian Army has been put on alert along the border, where the first line of defence is provided by the BSF.

Army sources said troops were put on alert after the fire started from Pakistani side. They described the firing as heavy and said it was a clear attempt by Pakistan to push terrorists into India on Republic Day.

The exchange of fire was heavy for about two hours initially. "Thereafter, it was intermittent firing that lasted till 6 am," Director General of Police Kuldeep Khoda told reporters.

It was the 15th ceasefire violation incident and infiltration attempt from across the border this month.

"Pakistan is desperate to push terrorists to the Indian side," a senior army official said, adding that they wanted to strike on India's national day and were unhappy with the peace in Jammu and Kashmir.

Taliban reward fighter for 'shooting down US drone'
[The News (Pak) Top Stories] The Taliban in North Waziristan on Monday rewarded one of their fighters with a new model car for shooting down the US drone on Sunday evening.

Also, government officials in the restive tribal region finally confirmed the downing of the US spy aircraft by the Taliban militants. The militants led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur claimed shooting down the drone in Hamzoni village on Sunday.

Tribal sources in Miramshah said the militants congratulated each other on Monday for shooting down the drone, known as 'Bangana' locally due to the thundering sound of the pilot-less aircraft.

The militant was given a new car by the Taliban leaders as reward to shoot down the drone. The militants from adjoining villages thronged Hamzoni to have a look at the wreckage of the drone. The militants wanted to meet and congratulate their fellow fighter, who accurately fired and hit the spy plane to the ground.

Taliban sources confirmed the man behind the downing of the drone had been gifted a car, but declined to name the fighter. They said he would be remembered as a 'hero' among the Taliban. "The shooting down of the drone has lifted the morale of our fighters. It's a huge success for the poorly armed Taliban against a powerful enemy," remarked a senior Taliban commander pleading anonymity.

#3  A surveillance JPEG of the award ceremony was forwarded in real-time to all Predator ground control stations (GCS). Imagery along with measurement and signature definitions of the award car have now been Pred uploaded. The Preds are now smiling.

#4  The militant was given a new car by the Taliban leaders as reward to shoot down the drone.

Too bad he won't be able to drive it.

Since when do we fly drones low enough to shoot at them? Am I right to assume he was using an AK-47?

#5  Could it be that high-mileage Preds are carefully filled full of holes, then sent 'out to pasture' on one way missions... just to monitor the crowds that turn up at the crash sites?

#6  Besoeker, you have a dirty, sneaky, evil mind.
I LIKE it (Big Evil grin).

Throw in a few pounds of TNT and blow away the baddies who come to look, as well as pulverizing the aircraft beyond any possible salvage.

On second thought, multiple charges with independent fuses.

#1  Its all George W's fault. Everybody knows that.

Islam is the Religion of Peace.

Do any Moslems live next door to YOUR house. Go over and engage them in multicultural and meaningful dialogue. Invite them over for dinner and ask them to bring the whole family. Ask them if they have a son named Hasan...or even Huseein, not to mention Barak.
You can thank me later.

#1  I have always thought that being a pacifist was stupid. You're free meat to whatever wants any.

Now Muzzies are slaughtering Bhuddhists left and right with NO reprisal, and guess what, I was right,Pacifism is supid, and soon extinct, fight or die is the rule

Ignoring this important rule does NOT make it go away.

Buddhist will soon be either extinct or have a greater power fight for them.
(No, God {Name your own} won't do it)
