Afghanistan
Three US Soldiers Killed in Afghan Unrest
Go to your maker with our thanks, and may your memory bring comfort to those who grieve.
NATO says two separate bomb explosions killed three U.S. service members Sunday in southern Afghanistan. No other details were given.

On Saturday, a roadside bomb also killed two U.S. soldiers in the same region.

Meanwhile, NATO says a bomb exploded in a market Saturday in the southern part of Helmand province, killing two children and wounding two others.

Earlier Saturday, a 16-year-old Afghan boy stepped on a homemade bomb in Tanai district of southeastern Khost province. The bomb exploded, killing him.

International forces say insurgents fired on a taxi in the southeastern province of Paktika, killing three Afghan women and wounding at least two others. They say the taxi driver brought the wounded to a NATO-led base where they received medical care.
The difference between us and them, in stark relief.

Arabia
Three Yemeni soldiers killed in checkpoint attack
[Al Arabiya Latest] Three Yemeni soldiers were killed in an attack at a Yemeni checkpoint by suspected southern separatists, a government official said on Sunday, in a province where the state is also hunting a resurgent al-Qaeda.

"Three soldiers were killed and one was injured when unknown armed people believed to belong to the southern movement attacked a checkpoint at the entrance to the city of Ataq," the official told Reuters.

"Unknown assailants opened fire from a car on a checkpoint in Ataq" another local official added.

He said the assailants escaped after the attack in Shabwa province, southeast of Sanaa. Elsewhere in south Yemen, two protesters were injured in clashes with security forces in the southern city of Dhaleh.

Southern secessionists represents a potent threat for President Ali Abdullah Saleh, already struggling with a Shiite revolt in the north and a resurgent al-Qaeda network which drew world attention after it said it was behind a failed Dec. 25 attack on a U.S. airliner.

North and south Yemen united in 1990 under Saleh, who had been president of the north since 1978. The bumpy merger led to a brief 1994 civil war won by the north. Southerners say state jobs and resources have gone to the north ever since.

President Saleh, an ally of the West in the fight against al-Qaeda, has said he is open for dialogue with separatists if they renounce violence, but diplomats see no movement toward this.

Yemen, following the failed plane attack, declared an open war on al-Qaeda and launched air strikes that it said killed six al-Qaeda militants including top leaders of the Yemen-based wing. Al-Qaeda said none were killed. Yemen also sent troops on a manhunt for militants in several provinces, including Shabwa.

7 civilians killed in Saudi blitz on northern Yemen
[Iran Press TV Latest] At least seven civilians have been killed and dozens more suffered injuries as Saudi fighter jets pounded the alleged strongholds of Houthi fighters in Yemen's rugged northern region of Jebel Razih near the border with the oil-rich kingdom.

According to a statement issued by the Shia Houthi fighters on Sunday, Saudi warplanes dropped several bombs on homes in the conflict area, as a result of which six members of a family lost their lives when their residence was destroyed during the airstrikes. Another local, Nasser Qaed al-Razihi, was killed and two of his family members sustained injuries when a bomb landed on their home.

The statement added that Saudi forces also fired 626 rockets at the beleaguered areas of Jebel al-Madood, Qafarah, al-Majdaha, Qamamat, al-Malaheet, al-Minzala, and al-Jabiri in northern Yemen.

Meanwhile, Yemen's Shia Houthis on Sunday managed to repulse Yemeni government troops trying to infiltrate into al-Minzala. An unspecified number of government soldiers were killed in the battle.

The conflict in northern Yemen between Sana'a and Houthi fighters began in 2004. The conflict intensified in August 2009 when the Yemeni army launched Operation Scorched Earth in an attempt to crush the fighters in the northern province of Sa'ada.

The Houthis accuse the Yemeni government of violating their civil rights and marginalizing them politically, economically, and religiously.

Saudi forces began fighting with Yemeni Shia resistance fighters, known as Houthis, and bombing their positions on November 4 after accusing the fighters of killing Saudi border guards.

Houthi fighters say that Saudi forces strike Yemeni villages and indiscriminately target civilians. They also say that the Saudis are using toxic materials, including white phosphorus, in the attacks on northern Yemen.

The US military has also been involved in the bombing of Yemen's northern regions of Amran, Hajjah, and Sa'ada, according to the Houthi fighters.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that since 2004, up to 175,000 people have been forced to leave their homes in Sa'ada and take refuge in overcrowded camps set up by the United Nations.

Yemeni forces fire on southern demonstrators
SANAA - Yemeni security forces opened fire Sunday on demonstrators in the southern city of Daleh, wounding three people, one critically, witnesses said.

Clashes broke out between demonstrators, mainly students demanding the release of a teacher, believed to be an opposition activist, who has been detained by the authorities for two months, the witnesses said. Security forces opened fire and three people were wounded, the sources said. The teacher two months, and security forces who opened fire, they told AFP.

On Saturday clashes also broke out between protesters and security forces in the city of Al-Houta, around 135 kilometres (85 miles) south of Sanaa, witnesses said. Demonstrators set fire to tyres in the streets and also torched shops owned by northerners, witnesses said, while the authorities announced that more than 30 people were arrested in connection with the protests.

The latest unrest comes amid calls by the so-called Southern Movement, a loose coalition of opposition groups, for protests to take place to underscore demands for secession from the north, in the run-up to a conference due to take place Wednesday in London on Yemen. The movement has called for a six-hour general strike on Monday morning and for demonstrations to take place on Tuesday as well.

South Yemen was an independent state from the time of Britain's withdrawal in 1967 until the country was united in 1990. The south seceded in 1994, sparking a short-lived civil war that ended with the region overrun by northern troops.

Southerners complaining of discrimination by the north and a lack of financial aid hold frequent demonstrations demanding either increased autonomy or independence for the south.

Bangladesh
53 jawans plead guilty of mutiny
[Bangla Daily Star] Fifty-three of the 62 accused BDR mutineers of 19 Rifle Battalion in Feni yesterday pleaded guilty and begged for mercy at a BDR special court.

The court framed charges against the 62 accused after hearing both prosecution and defence, reports a correspondent from Feni.

It also took the mercy pleas into cognisance.

This is the second instance that accused BDR mutineers begged for mercy. Earlier, sixteen BDR jawans of 7 Rifle Battalion in Satkhira begged for mercy before the BDR Special Court-1.

Prosecutor Lt Col Gazi Md Salahuddin, commander of 19 Rifle Battalion, read out the charges against them before the BDR Special Court-3 at the 19 Rifle headquarters at Joylaskar of Dagonbhuiyan upazila.

When the court asked the accused BDR jawans whether they are guilty or not, 53 of them pleaded guilty and begged for mercy. Nine others, however, pleaded not guilty and claimed they were not involved in the mutiny.

All accused preferred to have a departmental officer as their defence lawyer instead of hiring counsels from outside.

The three-member court, headed by BDR Director General Maj Gen M Mainul Islam, took deposition of four witnesses and adjourned the proceedings till 9:00am today.

Two other members of the court are BDR officials Lt Col Md Akhteruzzaman and Maj Md Maqsudul Alam.

On December 21 last year, the court fixed yesterday for framing charges in the case and adjourned the trial proceedings till the day.

Some members of the Rifle Battalion under the Comilla sector took part in the mutiny by firing blanks and putting up barricades on the road on February 26 following the revolt at the Pilkhana BDR headquarters.

Police later filed a case against the BDR jawans in this connection.

Home Front: WoT
Bin Laden tape claims attempt to bomb US plane
[Al Arabiya Latest] Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden claimed responsibility for the botched Christmas Day bombing of a US airliner and vowed further strikes on US targets, in an audio message broadcast Sunday.
So Mr. bin Laden chooses to boast about a failed attempt, and promises further failed attempts? O brave, toothless Lions of Islam!
Bin Laden, speaking days ahead of major international meetings on how to deal with militancy in Afghanistan and Yemen, said the attempt to blow up the plane as it neared Detroit was a continuation of al-Qaeda policy since Sept. 11, 2001.
Policy, yes. But it is a policy that results in ever greater destruction of the jihadis and their strongholds. We are now well established in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and have been invited to bring our toys to Yemen. Iraq has been seduced by more or less secular democracy and the idea of equality of under the law, if not quite the actuality of the latter. The mullahcracy of Iran is shaky, as the populace compare their lives to that of the Iraqis next door. More and more theologians of jihad are foreswearing jihad of the sword. Shiites are fleeing Hizb'allah territory in Lebanon in anticipation of another Hizb'allah "victory" against Israel, while in Gaza Hamasniks cower, waiting for Israel to lose patience again.

A; Qaeda might want to rethink their policy.
"The message sent to you with the attempt by the hero Nigerian Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is a confirmation of our previous message conveyed by the heroes of Sept. 11," bin Laden said on the tape in a message addressed "from Osama to (U.S. President Barack) Obama."

"That (message) is, that America should not dream of security until we enjoy it as a reality in Palestine," he added

The authenticity of the brief audio statement could not immediately be verified but it appeared the voice was that of bin Laden.

"If it was possible to carry our messages to you by words, we wouldn't have carried them to you by planes," bin Laden said.

"It is not fair that you (America) enjoy a good life while our brothers in Gaza endure the worst standard of living. Therefore, God willing, our attacks against you will continue as long as you maintain your support to Israel."

India-Pakistan
Jihadist terror group may plan suicide bomber paraglider attack
INDIAN intelligence officials suspect the terrorist group behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks is planning another audacious strike on the country, this time from the air, using suicide bombers flying paragliders.

UK Bansal, an Indian Home Ministry official, told reporters that the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) faction was thought to have acquired a number of the gliding parachutes, the Timesonline reports.

"We have intelligence reports that LeT has purchased 50 paragliding kits from Europe with an intention to launch attacks on India," he said. No other details were given, but security levels have been hiked across the country ahead of tomorrow's Republic Day celebrations, one of India's biggest holidays. If accurate, the intelligence would mark a radical new tactic.

Experts said the potential threat posed by jihadist paragliders would have to be considered seriously as LeT, which murdered 166 people in Mumbai in a sophisticated commando-style raid, has already proven itself highly innovative.

"The Mumbai attack (where ten LeT gunmen sailed to Mumbai from Karachi, murdering the crew of a fishing boat en route), was the group's first act of sea-borne terrorism," said B. Raman, a former counter-terrorism chief in the Indian foreign intelligence service, the Research and Analysis Wing. "It would be natural for them to plan another spectacular attack from the air. The warning has to be taken seriously.'

Paragliders usually do not have an engine but can, in skilled hands and in the right conditions, cover large distances. The world record for flying a paraglider is more than 460km.

Pakistani tribesmen shoot down US drone
[Iran Press TV Latest] Local tribesman in Pakistan's North Waziristan region claim to have shot down a US drone after the unnamed aerial vehicle (UAV) crashed in the tribal area.

The crash occurred on Sunday afternoon in the Hamdhoni area of North Waziristan, the Associated Press reported, citing two intelligence officials.

Drone attacks near the country's border with Afghanistan have been a controversial issue, especially since the attacks are imprecise in nature and usually result in civilian deaths.

However, the UAV strikes have remained an integral part of US raids on alleged militant targets in Pakistan's tribal areas -- which Washington claims to be a safe heaven for militants who cross the border from war-torn Afghanistan.

A local resident said local tribesmen are now congratulating each other for downing the drone.

In 2008, the Pakistani army blamed a similar crash in neighboring South Waziristan on technical problem and rejected claims that it had been shot down.

US drones have blitzed North and South Waziristan with 12 missile strikes following the December 30 bombing that killed seven CIA employees at a remote base in Afghanistan.

Taliban kill seven 'US spies' in North Waziristan
[Dawn] Taliban have shot dead seven people in North Waziristan after accusing them of being US spies.

Officials said here on Sunday that five of the people killed were Afghans. They said that five bullet-riddled bodies were found in Kam Sarobi village of Dosali tehsil. The militants had killed them on Saturday night and thrown the bodies on the road.

"A note found near the bodies said that they were spying for the United States and warned that all traitors would meet the same fate," said a resident of Kam Sarobi. The note said that more 'US spies' were 'in custody' and they would be treated under what they call their Sharia.

Three of the five were identified as Gul Khallel Jan, Habibur Rehman and Mashkor Machikhel. The names of the Afghans who were from Khost and Kandahar could not be ascertained.

Taliban killed more than 20 local people and Afghan nationals on similar charges in North Waziristan last year. Militants say these people were hired by Americans in Afghanistan to gather information about Taliban activities.

The sources said two other bodies had been found in Qutabkhel area and the other in Mirali Bazar. Taliban have warned residents not to bury their bodies.

Militants fired five rockets at Tochi Scouts fort in Miramshah on Saturday night, but no casualty was reported.

Meanwhile, security forces arrested 70 suspects, some of them Afghan nationals, during an operation in Maches area. The operation was launched on Friday.

Officials said that those found innocent would be released after completion of interrogation. They said that Afghan nationals were living in an old refugee camp illegally and they might be deported to their country.

Iraq
Chemical Ali executed
"jeez...is it always this hot here?"
Iraq's government spokesman says Saddam Hussein's notorious cousin "Chemical Ali" was executed Monday about a week after being sentenced to death for the poison gas attacks that killed more than 5,000 Kurds in 1988.

News of the hanging came shortly after three suicide car bombs struck downtown Baghdad. It was not immediately clear whether the attacks were linked the execution of Ali Hassan al-Majid.

Government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh confirmed the execution took place.

Al-Majid - widely known as "Chemical Ali" for the gas attacks - was convicted on Sunday for ordering the poison gas to be dropped on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988 as part of a campaign against a Kurdish uprising.

It was the fourth death sentence against him for crimes against humanity.

Car bomb kills at least 36 in Baghdad
At least 36 people were killed and 71 injured Monday in multiple bomb explosions in the hotel district of central Baghdad, a ministry official said.

Three massive car bombs shook the Iraqi capital in quick succession. The first blast went off in the car park of the Sheraton Hotel and the second was in front of Babylon Hotel.

The third blast took place shortly after when a minibus drove into the Al Hamra Hotel compound and blew up 160 feet short of the main entrance, eyewitnesses said. The bomb left a crater 30 feet wide and 12 feet deep.

The Iraqi army were trying to remove families that were trapped inside near-by houses and extract wounded from the second floor of the hotel.

Monday's explosions came less than six weeks from a March 7 general election which both U.S. forces and Iraqi politicians had warned could be a focus for violence. The latest violence also occurred less than two weeks after security forces sealed off Baghdad after being tipped-off that bomb-laden cars had been parked in the city.

Insurgents, weakened in the past year, have in the past six months changed tactics and mounted successful high-profile attacks on "hard" targets such as government buildings, rather than so-called soft targets in civilian areas.

The blast came just before Saddam Hussein's cousin, "Chemical Ali" Hassan al-Majid, was excecuted.

#1  I wonder if check-point personnel were still using the "dowsing rod of death" rather than sniffer dogs? The woo-woo charlatan whose company made these is a farking war criminal and needs to hang. Since he is British, that isn't going to happen. He has been arrested and charged with fraud though.

Southeast Asia
Nine wounded in separate attacks in southern Thailand
Nine Thai army soldiers and paramilitary rangers were wounded early Sunday in two separate attacks while eight suspected terrorists insurgents were arrested and a number of weapons were seized in two insurgency-affected southern provinces, officials said.

Six soldiers were slightly wounded while traveling in a pick-up truck in Rangae district of Narathiwat to search a village where terrorists insurgents were thought to be in hiding. After the inspection, they were returning to base when an undetermined number of terrorists hiding in a dense forest used a remote-controlled explosive, causing their truck to hit and damaged slightly. Police said all the six victims were later sent to a hospital for treatment.

Another incident took place in nearby Pattani province at about 9.45am when terrorists insurgents set off a bomb hidden in a fire extinguisher tank, causing three rangers traveling in a pickup truck to suffer minor injuries. The incident took place in Nong Chik district two kilometres from their base en route to assist flood victims, police said.

Eight suspected terrorists insurgents were arrested in an extensive search in 13 Narathiwat districts with a number of military weapons seized, police said. One suspect was identified as 35-year-old Mahreeseng Maeroh for whom the authorities issued an arrest warrant under the Emergency Decree on November 12. Police said five of them had allegedly possessed drugs.

Rebels guilty of huge extortion
[Straits Times] COMMUNISTS guerrillas in the Philippines have collected more than 1 billion pesos (S$30.9 million) through extortion in the past 13 years and plan to squeeze more money from candidates ahead of general elections this spring, the military said on Sunday.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has ordered the 120,000-strong Philippine military to defeat the 40-year-old Maoist insurgency by the end of her term in June. About 48 million Filipinos will vote for a new president, senators, congressmen and thousands of officials down to the village level on May 10. Past elections in the South-east Asian democracy have been marred by bloodshed and fraud.

Documents seized from captured guerrillas show they plan to extort money and firearms from candidates in exchange for protection from rebel attacks, as well as help in gaining support in the countryside, military civil relations service commander Brigadier General Francisco Cruz said in a statement.

He said such demands are preposterous because the rebels do not control any territory or voters.

Candidates should immediately report any extortion demands from the 5,000-strong New People's Army rebels because giving them funds or guns would bolster their waning movement, Gen Cruz said.

'This is their moneymaking season,' he said. 'Extortion is what's keeping them alive, not their ideology.' Maoist guerrillas have also attempted to extort money from a company contracted by the elections commission to supply automated voting machines nationwide, Gen Cruz said.

Terror Networks
Bootleg Botulinum Toxin Producers Sought by AQ & Investigators
In early 2006, a mysterious cosmetics trader named Rakhman began showing up at salons in St. Petersburg, Russia, hawking a popular anti-aging drug at suspiciously low prices. Rakhman's "Botox" was found to be a potent clone of the real thing, but investigators soon turned to a far bigger worry: the prospect of an illegal factory in Chechnya churning out raw botulinum toxin, the key ingredient in the beauty drug and one of world's deadliest poisons. No Chechen factory has been found, but a search for the maker of the highly lethal toxin in Rakhman's vials continues across a widening swath of Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Asia. U.S. officials and security experts say they know the lab exists, and probably dozens of other such labs, judging from the surging black market for the drug. "It is the only profit-making venture for terrorists that can also potentially yield a weapon of mass destruction," said Kenneth Coleman, a physician and biodefense expert. Al-Qaeda's earlier known bioweapons efforts were hampered by rudimentary lab equipment and limited access to lethal strains. All of those problems can now be bypassed at a time when illicit networks are making the toxin for profit, said Coleman.

#3  We could spread the story that we have new technology that seeks out manufacturers of illicit botulinum toxin and kills those working on such toxins by means of some new virulent "swine" flu bug or some other swine-related bug delivered via nanotechnology.

#6  I have never understood why liberals, most of whom would never eat an artificially fertilized vegetable, or hormone enhanced cow (if they eat meat at all), or use anything but pure natural sea salt, would willingly and cheerfully inject one of the most poisonous substances known into their faces.
