Two more killed in hartal violence

The opposition announced extension of the strike by another 12 hours that would now end at 6:00pm today, demanding cancellation of the 10th parliamentary election and in protest at the arrest and 'killing' of opposition activists.

Science teacher arrested on suspicion of plotting terror attack in Syria
A science teacher has been arrested on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack in war-torn Syria.

Jamshed Javeed, 29, from Levenshulme, was arrested by counter-terrorism officers as part of an investigation into concerns surrounding travel to Syria. Javeed, a teacher at Sharples High School in Bolton, was arrested on December 22 and has since been released on bail until March 5, pending further enquiries.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "The investigation focuses on concerns over an individual travelling to Syria for purposes that are as yet unknown, but are believed to potentially involve terrorism.

"There is nothing to suggest that any of the wider community in Manchester has been under threat."
If he's not a threat why arrest him? If he's a threat why release him on bail?

Cop killed during hunt to nab Lashkar commander
[India Express] A police officer was killed and three constables were maimed in North Kashmire's Sopore town during an operation launched by the police and the Army to nab top Lashkar commander Muzuffar Naikoo.

The operation at Chankhan locality was launched following reports of Naikoo's presence there. The bad boy, however, managed to get away.

According to officials, when troops of the Special Operation Group of the police along with the Army surrounded the bad boy, he opened fire.

Assistant sub inspector Kafeel Ahmad, who was taken to Army hospital, departed this vale of tears.

"We had specific information about the presence of snuffies in the area. As the troops were conducting the search operation, the bad boy opened fire resulting in the death of a police officer. Three constables also sustained injuries," Superintendent of Police, Sopore, said.

A search operation to track down the escaped bad boy was called off after three hours. Naikoo has been active in the town from the past six years and has escaped the police earlier as well. Police said he was also involved in the killing of two sisters, Akhtara and Arifa, on January 31, 2011 in Moslem Peer locality of the town.

This is the first attack in the Valley this year in which a police official lost his life.

Thousands of Syrians Cross into Iraq as Border Reopens
[An Nahar] Thousands of Syrians fleeing civil war or planning to stock up on supplies crossed into northern Iraq at the weekend after Iraqi Kurdish authorities reopened a long-closed border, the U.N. refugee agency said Tuesday.

On Sunday afternoon, authorities reopened the Peshkhabour border at the Tigris River, which had been closed since mid-September, allowing 2,519 Syrians to cross into the country by barge, UNHCR spokeswoman Melissa Fleming told news hounds in Geneva.

The border crossing is currently the only one open between Syria and Iraq, she said.

A bridge across the border was no longer in use, so people were forced to cram into small barges carrying between 10 and 30 people each to cross from Simelka on the Syrian side of the river, she explained.

No one had crossed on Monday, but Fleming said "several thousand" Syrians had gathered near the river bank in Simelka by Tuesday morning.

Iraqi authorities decided to close the border in September after facing an exodus of some 60,000 Syrians, UNHCR said.

Authorities in Iraq's Kurdistan region had told the U.N. agency they had now decided to allow Syrians claiming they did not want to stay in the country to visit for up to seven days, allowing them to stock up on supplies before returning.

Those wishing to stay meanwhile needed to register their request for refugee status with authorities.

Around 400 of the newcomers had gone to UNHCR to ask for assistance as refugees, and were taken to the Gawilan refugee camp, which counts some 3,000 residents and lies between Erbil and Dohuk.

First Chemical Materials Removed from Syria by Ship
[An Nahar] The first ship carrying Syrian chemical materials left port of Latakia Tuesday under a deal to rid the country of its chemical arsenal, said the joint mission overseeing the disarmament.

Meanwhile,
...back at the comedy club, Boogie sadly admitted that he was a better peeping Tom than he was a comedian...
the head of al-Qaeda's Syrian affiliate, the Al-Nusra Front, called for an end to four days of festivities between rebels and the jihadist Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) that has killed at least 274 people.

"A first quantity of priority chemical materials was moved from two sites to the port of Latakia for verification and was then loaded onto a Danish commercial vessel today," the United Nations
...boodling on the grand scale...
-Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (U.N.-OPCW) mission said.

The ship then sailed for international waters, eight days after a December 31 deadline for the operation to begin was missed.

Tuesday's shipment "initiates the process of transfer of chemical materials from the Syrian Arab Republic to locations outside its territory for destruction," the U.N.-OPCW statement said.

The ship, under escort by Chinese, Danish, Norwegian and Russian naval vessels, will stand offshore until more chemicals arrive at the port and then return to collect them.

Syria agreed last year to a U.S.-Russian deal to hand over its chemical weapons.

That came after U.S. President Barack Obama
Republicans can come along for the ride, but they've got to sit in the back...
threatened air strikes in response to an August chemical weapons attack outside Damascus that killed hundreds of people, which Washington blamed on the Syrian regime.
