Dershowitz Drops $300 Million Defamation Suit on CNN
h/t Red State
...Yet, in January of this year, CNN again deceptively edited a video of Harvard professor and long-standing attorney-pundit, Alan Dershowitz. The video suggested that Dershowitz had said that illegal actions were not impeachable, a statement Dershowitz clearly did not make. Dershowitz had actually stated the opposite, saying that illegal acts were impeachable, but that a self-serving motive was not. In other words, if Trump’s actions on Ukraine were legal, but selfish, they didn’t rise to the level of an impeachable offense. For that, Dershowitz is right.

...From the NY Post and Daily Mail :
Lawyer Alan Dershowitz has hit CNN with a $300 million defamation lawsuit, accusing the cable network of distorting his words to portray him as an "intellectual who had lost his mind" during President Trump’s impeachment trial, according to media reports.

During the January trial, the Harvard professor raised eyebrows when he argued, "If a president does something which he believes will help him get elected in the public interest, that cannot be the kind of quid pro quo that results in impeachment."

He is accusing CNN of airing misleading footage in a "barrage of defamatory programming" that led to him being "openly mocked by most of the top national talk show hosts and by CNN viewers," the Daily Mail reported.

He wants the left-leaning network to cough up $250 million in punitive damages and $50 million in compensation, the paper reported of the Florida suit.

#1  Weird headline. "To drop" an action or pursuit usually means to abandon it; to quit. But Dersh is pressing forward.

#11  Computer Language translation is still a bit wonky in places. I went for a PhD in Computer Science with an AI emphasis on Language translation, but was at the wrong school for that (Georgia Tech instead of New Mexico Albuquerque (they were working on the Native American languages in the state)).

Never got it, but I did find my wife there, so I made out like a bandit.

China-Japan-Koreas
CCP announces plan to take control of China's private sector
[Asia Times] President issues 'important instructions' to all regions to boost party control over private enterprise and rejuvenate the nation; all firms will need employees from the party to boost law abidance and moral standards
"employees" = non-productive political commissars
The Plan was detailed in a 5,000-word statement – and all regions and departments in the country have been told to follow the new guidelines.

This was the top story on Wednesday's CCTV Evening News – how the president had issued “important instructions”.

It had a long-winded title: "Opinion on Strengthening the United Front Work of the Private Economy in the New Era".

The ultimate goal is for the party to have ideological leadership of private enterprise.

The statement seeks to improve CCP control over private enterprise and entrepreneurs through United Front Work “to better focus the wisdom and strengthen of the private business people on the goal and mission to realize the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”

Xi's instructions were issued ahead of a conference today on this very topic. The party wants to see a "united front" between private enterprise and government business.

100 ways to rein in the private sector

Since the 18th National Congress in May, members of the party's Central Committee and Comrade Xi have proposed a series of new concepts and strategies, and adopted a series of major measures to guide and promote private economic 'united front' work. They say these moves have achieved "remarkable results".

As China’s private economy has grown and diversified, the statement says "these measures will bring about a great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation under Xi Jinping thought".

Overall, there are more than 100 measures, including guidance on selection of personnel to implement the measures.

"We must also see that socialism with Chinese characteristics has entered a new era, [as] the scale of the private economy has continued to expand, risks and challenges have increased significantly, the values and interests of the private economy have become increasingly diverse, and the united front work of the private economy is facing new situations and tasks," the statement says.

"In order to thoroughly implement the major decisions and deployments of the Party Central Committee, to further strengthen the Party's leadership of the private economic united front work, and to better integrate the wisdom and strength of private economic personnel to the goal and task of achieving the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the following opinions are hereby offered."

The primary stated significance of the measures is “enhancement of the party’s leadership over the private economy – private economic figures are to be more closely united around the party.”

More CCP involvement in business

This is quite a turnaround. Previously, private business was not considered very worthy for party membership or influence, but it has gradually entered the heart of the regime.

According to the new provisions, private firms will need a certain amount of CCP registered employees, which is already a long-term practice in large private firms but not smaller ones.

These cadres will make sure businesses follow the guiding ideology “Guided by Xi Jinping’s Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.”

They will also guide private business people to enhance the latest CCP catchphrases – “four consciousnesses”, strengthen the “four self-confidences”, and achieve the “two safeguards.”

Duties of cadres will include the duties of:
    strengthening ideological guidance,
guiding private economic figures to increase their awareness of self-discipline,
build a strong line of ideological and moral defense,
strictly regulate their own words and deeds,
    cultivate a healthy lifestyle,
and create a good public image.
They will also need to continuously improve law abidance and moral standards of private citizens.

Communication channels will be set up between private business and the party to report back on progress and other matters.

#16  It is time that we enforce the rule that any US media organization must not be controled by a foreign government. This has been invoked in regard to Al Jazira which is under direct control of the government of Qatar. It should applied to any organization which has a major stake in China, since all Chinese private companies under this new rule will be under control of the Chinese government.
These include all our networks and most newspapers and large internet enterprises. They must be forced to spin off their domestic communications and censorship activities from any activities with links to China.

'Grossly false': Romney throws cold water on claim he won't vote on SCOTUS nominee until next year
[BIZPACREVIEW] Sen. Willard Mitt Romney, aka Pierre Delecto
...former governor of Massachussetts, the Publican nominee for president in 2012, now Senator from Utah. He is the son of the former governor of Michigan, George Romney, who himself ran for president after saving American Motors from failure, though not permanently. Romney has a record as a successful businessman, heading Bain Capital, and he rescued the 2002 Winter Olympics from the midst of bribery and mismanagement scandals. He is currently a trans Republican and a member in good standing of the Never Trump Party, attempting to assume the mantle of the late John McCain...
’s spokesperson pushed back against claims that the Republican was "committed" to not confirming a new Supreme Court Justice until 2021.

News of the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Friday sparked immediate panic in liberal America and, with meltdowns over filling her vacant seat on the high court, eyes turned to politicians who would be part of the confirmation process. But reports that Romney had taken a stand against voting on a nominee before the election turned out to be "fake news."

The liberal call to action to oppose any Supreme Court nominations by President Trump, though it is his duty to fill the vacancy left by Ginsburg, sparked a flurry of social media responses claiming certain senators had indicated they would not vote before Inauguration Day 2021 if he moved ahead.

#13  Mitt is all about being noticed and displaying a high moral sense above all things, despite much of that being hubris.
I suspect he is signaling willingness to be a team player and present Mitch with a seeming pathway to confirmation. But as has been stated, on the national stage, he will remember he hates Trump and will be the scorpion again claiming divine guidance after prayer and revelation that decency cannot be ignored or some such drivel. Do not trust him!
Posted by: NoMoreBS || 09/20/2020 13:11 Comments || Top||

#14  Pierre's logic is simple.

If I can advance my interests - money above all, political power as well - without hurting Trump, then advance my interests.

If advancing those interests requires hurting Trump, then I will hurt Trump - unless he can hurt me, by reducing my ability to add to my fortune or stymie my political career.

Based on the above, Pierre's likely path will be to delay as much as possible and see where Trump stands on Nov. 4. If Trump wins handily, Pierre will tie the line. If Trump does not win handily, he'll pull his "maverick" BS and become a de facto (Delecto?) Independent.

In short he'll blow with the prevailing political winds and delay, delay, delay.
