[Independent] Government to order internet firms to block terror sites and pornography. Culture Secretary orders internet crackdown in wake of Woolwich attack and the murder of five year old April Jones.

#1  It's like threatening the Highways Agency with prosecution because bank robbers tend to use vehicles, and the HA fail to stop them. How could they, without severely restricting road use for everyone? And, besides, it's the police's job.

Would banning 'terror sites' have stopped Islamist violence in, say Mali? No.

Will banning terror sites make it look to would-be Jihadis as though the UK Government has something to hide, and is in some way suppressing 'the truth'? Of course.

Will there be balanced banning, to make it look even-handed, and not solely anti-Muslim? Naturally - and so what else will get banned?

The thin end of a very fat, very illiberal, very stupid wedge.

Carney: There Are No "Secret" Email Accounts, Only "Alternate Email Addresses"
[Real Clear Politics] Following an Associated Press report that Obama administration appointees have "secret government email accounts," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney argued Tuesday that the accounts aren't secret and, in fact, prior administrations have followed the practice of appointees having second government accounts.

"Having alternate email addresses for cabinet secretaries and other high-profile officials makes eminent sense. If they are inundated in one account with either public emails, or spam or the like, then they can continue to use their other account for normal work," Carney added.

"There's nothing secret," Carney added. "It's about having a public e-mail address, as well as a one for internal, you know, workings. But they're all available for when FOIA requests are made and congressional inquiries are conducted."
Then his lips fell off.

I have an "alternate" email account. It's my work account. It doesn't feature an assumed name.

#5  An old quote form somewhere. My bracketed insert:

"The danger to America is not Barack Obama, but a citizenry [LIV's...Limited Information Voters] capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency. It will be far easier to
limit and undo the follies of an Obama presidency than to restore the
necessary common sense and good judgment to a depraved electorate
willing to have such a man for their president. The problem is much
deeper and far more serious than Mr. Obama, who is a mere symptom of
what ails America. Blaming the prince of the fools should not blind
anyone to the vast confederacy of fools that made him their prince. The
Republic can survive a Barack Obama, who is, after all, merely a fool.
It is less likely to survive a multitude of fools, such as those who
made him their president."

US govt secretly collecting data on millions of Verizon users: Report

#1  While I talk about nothing that would interest the government (can you pick up the kid? Sure.) The fact that they treat us all like criminals and like the population of East Communist Germany makes me madder than hell.

Here is an out in the open message for you, Mr. Government listeners. Fuck you. Fuck you and the repressive forces you have come to be. Eat my ass and I'll see you later with a gun in my hand and the Declaration of Independence in the other.

#4  Pretty well explains the gummit employee "secret" e-mail accounts and PM's [personal meets] vs fone or teleconference. No sense feeding your communications into the big vacuum cleaner.

Yes, go ahead and drop the Chechen Boston student project you were working on. Let's kick it up a notch and go back to connecting the dots via random numbers search off the Verizon file against Tea Party activists from the last rally, see how many hits we get and take it from there. Rico, have Verizon send over account payment histories on the hits and load the local banking data, then bring the car around.

#10  BTW, the release of the decoded Japanese diplomatic intercepts 50 years after the war implied that the consulates on the west coast had sympathizers among the locals. That in part was a rationale for the relocation of nearly the entire ethnic community from the region (where 90 percent of America's aircraft production was located at the time). The Left has always denounced that act as a blot upon America's image and morality. Now, in a broad act they too have done exactly the same in spreading a wide net to find individuals. Remember, as so often demonstrated, the accusations of the Left are only a warning of what they will do with power.

#15  I've got Verizon cell service. Anyone got a recommendation for cell phone service other than Verizon. I've never particularly liked Verizon anyway. I realize it the fault of the current federal government.

#16  Verizon said that if they received such an order from the Federal government, they would be compelled to comply. Why is it that with every scandal (Benghazi, Fast and Furious, the IRS, mass wiretapping, the AP and Fox reporter, green energy, etc.) all we get from those in this administration who are asked is everything but the truth?
Posted by: JohnQC || 06/06/2013 19:07 Comments || Top||

#17  John, they may be "compelled to comply," but they could have complied PUBLICLY.

What, they were afraid if they said anything, they'd lose customers? This gummint would have done the same thing (and probably did) to the other providers, too, ya' know. And now, they'll lose customers anyway.

#18  I used to have to put a foil hat on for the next statement.

Perhaps they initially resisted and their workers' union started breaking the nice little company they have there.

Perhaps somebody closer could clue me in, cuz unions breaking things and hurting people news didn't make it out here.

#19  I've yet to read a media report that actually understands what's going on. The government is using call logs, not the content of the calls, to data mine for networks. The idea being you discover potential terrorists you didn't otherwise know about. Although it can be used for pretty much anything, pedophiles, insider traders, tax evaders, etc.

Trust me, it works.

More IRS staffers placed on leave
[POLITICO] The IRS has notified congressional staff that top officials in the agency's Affordable Care Act implementation team were recently placed on administrative leave for potential improprieties, according to a congressional source.

The agency told lawmakers that Fred Schindler, who is Sarah Hall Ingram's deputy, and another staffer in the division were put on leave. The move is the result of gifts the staffers allegedly received -- including $1,100 in free food and other items -- while attending a 2010 health care conference.

The IRS didn't immediately comment.

The agency is surrounded in scandal after acknowledging last month that it wrongly targeted tea party groups applying for a tax exemption. The IRS came under additional scrutiny yesterday after an inspector general released a report saying the agency spent about $49 million on conferences between 2010 and 2012.

Acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel placed Lois Lerner, a senior official in the division overseeing nonprofits, on leave last month.

#1  If these people [or others] are involved in nefarious or illegal activities, why can't their gov't security clearances be suspended or yanked?
