Shahzad Khan, 31, was sentenced in Oslo to Norway's maximum prison sentence of 21 years for the killing of his three sisters last year.
District Attorney Kristian Nicolaisen argued for forvaring for Khan, extended preventive custody that can be used to potentially extend a sentence to life incarceration, on the grounds that there was a danger the Norwegian-Pakistani could kill again.
The court did not rule in favor of forvaring, explaining that it was unlikely he would emerge from such a long prison sentence with his drug problems intact. intact - Not quite the word I'd use in reference to a triple-ax murder spree.
Khan was on a variety of drugs, vodka and rohypnol when committing the crimes.
The three sisters Nafisa, 13, Saadia, 24, and Sobia, 27, were struck down with an axe and murdered in their semi-detached home in the Kalbakken district of Oslo. One of the sisters was also shot with a pistol on the night of October 1, 2006. When the trial began the brother declared himself partially guilty, and testified that he could not remember carrying out the killings, but realized that he must have been responsible. Everyone I've ever met that was home schooled was quite odd. There's something to be said for the socialization process, even if your kid occasionally hears something you disagree with (gasp and swoon).

I find everyone indicted for felonies in our county has attended public school. There's something to be said for having "socialization" moderated by an adult whose IQ is not lower than the children's

Everyone I've ever met that was home schooled was reasonably normal, as were their parents. Big Jim, I suspect neither of us has met enough to constitute a statistically valid sample, but I suspect "odd" and "home schooled" are independent variables.

#4: if all your experiences of home schoolers is odd, then you've had rather limited experience.
Most home schoolers participate in 4H and scouts and play with neighborhood kids. They get social interaction without having been stuffed into an artificial environment for 45 hours a week.
I have seen a few isolationist families, but they are the exception not the rule.
I home schooled my daughters for part of their education. We participated in an arts cooperative, took group field trips with other families, and did lessons together with a home schooling neighbor.
The state of Wisconsin allows private schooled students, including home schooled students, to attend up to two classes at the public high school per year, for things like AP courses and music.
Unfortunately, I've heard some horror stories from other states; lots of red tape and a lot of unnecessary testing, and in one state (Arkansas, I think) absolute refusal to permit a child with special needs to participate in home school. Such a policy would have been disastrous for our youngest daughter, who has Asperger's Syndrome. Her third grade teacher actually said that our daughter would be better off in home school because she couldn't take the noise of a regular classroom. Our daughter was able to recieve hours of autism therapy in a home school setting (before the state of Wisconsin completely gutted their autism therapy program for children). She reentered the public schools as a 9th grader.

I am currently home schooling my younger son (third grade) after a disastrous escapade with public schools. Where we were told (informally of course) by the district that since he was gifted I would be better off teaching him myself because they would not put him in a gifted program because of 'disproportional representation' in the current program. All spots were pretty much reserved for people with the correct last names (old money) or correct genetics.
Our older son was homeschooled for 3 years then we sent him back in for high school where the district has class choices that would allow him to take an accelerated curriculum and AP classes that would transfer as college credit.

This remark would make some iota of sense if the shooter had been raised as an atheist.
He may not have been raised to be anti-Christian Excaliber, but he certainly was one when he conceived, planned, and did this stuff.
My point was, antireligionists are no more likely to be benevolent than folks with religious beliefs, despite all of the pop-psych philosophers out there right now saying that that is the case.

For gifted students who are are not strongly attuned to what's going on around them, a school without a proper gifted program is actually destructive. Both of the trailing daughters tested as gifted, but one drifts off into her own thoughts if not strongly engaged, while the other keeps track of the class and the teacher. Both thrived in the excellent gifted program the school had through junior high, but my artistic philosopher struggled in classes that go slower than she does.
Is such a thing possible? Judge for yourself:

In Indian Islam it is common to venerate the tombs of dead muslim 'saints'. Even Hindus and Christians will come to come to offer prayers at the graves, asking the saint to intercede for them.
The Deobandis and Wahabis hate this. Given the chance, they would demolish the shrines.

Coming up for a vote Wednesday is a proposal to ban chickens, a former barnyard denizen that is pecking its way into cities across the country as part of a growing organic food trend among young professionals and other urban dwellers. Chicken lovers say the birds make great pets, don't take up much backyard space and provide tasty, nutritious eggs.
Cities including Madison, Wis., and Kent, Wash., have passed ordinances allowing people to keep chickens. In Ann Arbor, Mich., a councilman says he plans to introduce a resolution to allow hens to be kept for eggs, and the Board of Zoning Appeals in the upscale Indianapolis suburb of Carmel recently approved an exception to city rules to allow a family to keep three hens in their backyard.
But the Chicago alderman who proposed a Chicago ban say chicken lovers forget that the birds attract rodents. "This past summer I started hearing that residents were letting chickens out of their yard and they were leaving poop and mice were feeding off of it," said Alderman Lona Lane. "Then we started getting rodent-control problems and, sure enough, it was the chickens."
There are also concerns about parasites the birds might carry, and the possibility that they could transmit bird flu if it makes its way to the U.S., said Dr. Marek Digas, the supervising veterinarian at the city's Commission on Animal Care and Control. "It is something we should consider," he said.
Many neighbors of chicken-keepers aren't happy, either. This year, the city received more than 700 complaints about chickens though mostly about the racket from roosters. "We don't encourage people to keep roosters because of the noise," said Johannes Paul, one of the founders of Omlet, a British company that sells a dome-shaped chicken house called the eglu in the U.S for $495. "The chickens will produce eggs more than happily without a rooster around," Paul said.
Chicagoan Kim Jackson said her two chickens, Papoo and Chalmers, do a little quiet talking but that's it. She says they don't smell, largely because she and her husband regularly clean up after them. But even if they didn't, "it's not nearly as bad as a dog as far as how far-reaching the smell will get," she said.
Although there are no firm statistics on the number of city chickens, they're becoming so popular that Backyard Poultry magazine was relaunched a couple of years ago after halting publication in the 1980s. And Paul said U.S. sales of his company's designer chicken coops have doubled every year since they were introduced here in 2005.
Those who have eaten eggs from their own chickens say they are far fresher and tastier than store-bought eggs. "And they're so productive for the garden," said Owen Taylor, training and livestock coordinator of Just Food, a New York-based nonprofit group. "They aerate the soil, eat bugs and they look like little tractors, tilling the soil."

My first wife and I lived on a farm in the Texas Pandhandle. I was new to the country life but she had inherited the place and was determined to make a farmer out of me.
There were a lot of coyotes in the area but we took a live-and-let-live attitude with them until one of them killed my wife's favorite cat. At that point, she declared war on the coyotes and enlisted me to help. She was an expert shot and quickly put paid to several of the marauders.
It happened that we had a chicken house (never a "coop") in the backyard. I couldn't stand the noisy, smelly, stupid, disgusting creatures but it was her pet project and she doted on them.
One summer night we were awakened by a fearsome racket in the chicken quarters. The wife looked out and shouted that one of the hated coyotes had gotten into the chicken enclosure. I didn't especially care if it ate all of them then and there but I did want the hellish noise to stop.
I started to get dressed so I could go out and evict the coyote. Before I could, however, the wife grabbed my Lee-Enfield out of the closet, chambered a round and aimed it out the window, which was open but screened. I said, "Don't fire that in h---" BOOM! The noise and flash were awe-inspiring and left a neat hole in the window screen.
I eventually collected my wits and went outside for some damage assessment. She had missed the coyote (which had nevertheless beaten a hasty retreat) but had hit a prime rooster. The ancient rifle had been loaded with Norma soft-points. There were feathers and chicken bits everywhere. I laughed till I hurt but the wife was not amused.

My chickens aren't mean. I can pick every one of them up and hold it. They like to be petted. The eggs are much better than store-bought. I have a co-worker whose son can not eat store-bought eggs because of the hormones fed to the battery chickens. He can eat eggs from my chickens because they are only fed grain and crushed oyster shell as well as any bugs or seeds they get naturally. MMMMM, Aigs, as they say here.

My family had chickens when I was growing up, in a small city. They were some of the best pets we ever had! A couple even won ribbons in the county fair.

A housewife with acid burns succumbed to her wounds at her home in Gazipur's Baghalbari area yesterday after fighting for life for a month. Shiuli, 26, was burnt severely on the night of November 11 when her neighbour Abul Hossain and his associates threw acid on her following a trifle.
She was immediately whisked to Gazipur Sadar Hospital from where doctors sent her to the burn unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Shiuli was, however, brought back home on December 1 as her family could not bear the cost of the treatment, said her mother, Monwara Begum, adding that the victim was again taken to a hospital on December 9 as her condition deteriorated.
Monwara filed a case with Joydevpur police station on Sunday, accusing Abul Hossain, Abul Kashem, and 4 to 5 other unidentified men of the grisly attack. She said she did not lodge the case earlier because of threats from the accused. Police arrested Abul Kashem on Monday, but could not arrest Abul Hossain, the main accused, till last evening.

PHOENIX An attorney representing a Mexican visitor is asking a federal judge to block the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department from what he claims is racial profiling by agency deputies trying to enforce federal immigration laws. Louis Moffa Jr. said in papers filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court here that Manuel Ortega Melendres was illegally detained after the vehicle in which he was riding was stopped by deputies.
But Moffa wants more than damages for Ortega. He is asking Judge Mary Murguia to force Sheriff Joe Arpaio to shut down his special hot line which people can call to report suspected illegal immigrants. And he wants a court order shutting down what he says is the sheriff's Illegal Immigration and Interdiction unit, which acts on those tips.
Sheriff's Department spokesman Paul Chagolla said the lawsuit is an attempt to stop deputies from enforcing federal laws. "If this attorney from New Jersey thinks he's going to intimidate Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, he's wrong," he said.
Moffa acknowledged U.S. Department of Homeland Security has signed an agreement with Arpaio allowing specially trained deputies to enforce immigration laws. He said, though, that pact permits deputies to detain suspected violators of federal laws only if they are investigating some breach of state or local laws. Instead, Moffa charged that Arpaio has deployed deputies to different communities for the express purpose of looking for illegal immigrants. And he said many Hispanics have been questioned, and some arrested, even though there was no reason to believe they had broken any state laws.
Chagolla denied deputies are acting illegally or in violation of the agreement with the federal government.
Moffa's lawsuit also charges that detaining Ortega violated his right of interstate travel and state constitutional provisions entitling all people here a right to privacy and due process. While Moffa is from New Jersey, he is with the law firm of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, the same firm that filed suit to overturn the state's new employer sanctions law. AP Version

People here are still antsy about the city of Chandler illegal alien sweep in 1997. Close to a "police rampage", federal and local officers acted like they had never heard of police procedure or the bill of rights.
