Britain
When in Rome...
[DAWN] AMRA Bone, Britannia's first woman Sharia judge, recently told the Times: "... the British government cannot ask Moslems not to have more than one wife ..."

Really? Why not? After all, Moslems in the UK cannot sacrifice animals in ritual slaughter either as this would contravene existing anti-cruelty laws. Similarly, female genital mutilation is banned, although this vile practice is widely carried out in parts of Africa.

So to demand that Moslems curb their libido is hardly unreasonable. Although according to British law, bigamy is punishable with seven years in jail, thousands of Moslems have polygamous marriages that are not registered. According to one estimate, 70-75pc of Moslem weddings are unregistered, with around 20,000 polygamous relationships in the UK.

With an increasing number of Moslems born and brought up in the UK leaning towards a literal, fundamental vision of Islam, many young men are opting for Sharia marriage, bypassing the local registry office. Another reason -- and probably the more practical one -- is that under British law, the assets owned by a married couple are equally divided if they divorce. It is this protection accorded to women that is denied to Moslem divorcees under these informal matrimonial arrangements.

According to the Times, 100,000 Moslem couples are living under such unregistered marriages. And when they are registered, they are often arranged matches in which British Moslem girls are married off to young men from remote areas of Pakistain to secure the latter the right to enter Britannia, and in time, acquire residency and nationality.

The notion that the customs and religious tenets of migrant groups should supersede the laws of the host country runs contrary to the treatment most Moslem countries mete out to non-Moslems. In Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
, merely the possession of the Bible can lead to a prison sentence or worse. So for British Moslems to insist on following their religious practices irrespective of the law is a bit hypocritical. The old saw -- when in Rome, do as the Romans do -- is still apt.

#2  How about keeping it to serial polygamy rather than parallel polygamy just like the Anglos? Better yet, get the government to sponsor your kids and not even marry the dozen or so women you knock up?

India-Pakistan
Political dilemma
[DAWN] MQM chief Altaf Hussain
...think of the head of the Barzini clan, only in Urdu...
is known to make emotional appeals to his followers in Pakistain over the telephone. But this time, perhaps reflecting the pressure the party is facing from the security establishment in Pakistain, combined with the Muttahida's legal issues in the UK, Mr Hussain gave the ultimate call: the party was to be disbanded. On Wednesday night he ordered the party's cadres to close all MQM offices "to protest [the] Rangers' atrocities". Yet expectedly, the decision was short-lived. The following morning Mr Hussain told the party faithful to reopen offices after supporters promised they would "face all consequences". The MQM supremo has quit the party leadership several times in the past over various issues, mostly to express displeasure with his subordinates. Yet these dramatic decisions would be reversed within hours after party loyalists -- some in tears -- would plead with him not to abandon the Muttahida ship. Such melodramatic actions have been dubbed comical by the party's opponents, yet they show the influence Altaf Hussain exercises over his workers. However,
a good lie finds more believers than a bad truth...
while the crises the MQM has been facing are very real, and while the Rangers have targeted the party excessively, the big shotship seems to be missing in action.

Signs that the Muttahida is in disarray internally have manifested themselves in the erratic policies the party has pursued ever since the security establishment turned up the heat over the past few months. There seems to be no plan on display to democratically struggle for the party's rights. Yet if this state of affairs continues, managing the MQM's campaign for the Sindh local government polls -- scheduled for September -- will be a very difficult task. If the party does not organise itself, fielding candidates and reaching out to voters will be affected. Clearly, the MQM has a vote bank in urban Sindh -- despite the state's intimidatory tactics the party secured a decisive victory in Bloody Karachi
...formerly the capital of Pakistain, now merely its most important port and financial center. It is among the largest cities in the world, with a population of 18 million, most of whom hate each other and many of whom are armed and dangerous...
's NA-246 by-election in April. But securing this vote bank in the LG polls will be challenging if the party fails to get its act together. To counter its not entirely unearned reputation for strong-arm tactics and to shore up its political credentials the Muttahida must focus on the LG elections. This will require solid canvassing and campaigning amongst the people to show the electorate that the party has a plan for effective local government in Sindh. The campaign, and the party, will hardly benefit from melodramatic announcements and bizarre policies.

Skewed coverage or reality?
[DAWN] For now it is Hail Raheel Sharif and his men. All else is pointless. Yes, it must be conceded the army chief doesn't seem to have set a foot wrong so far. After the Army Public School carnage, he took a policy decision to go after the perpetrators and didn't procrastinate or negotiate with them as some of his predecessors did.

That there was not even a perfunctory attempt to hold to account those who, despite intelligence alerts and warnings, failed in their duty to protect the institution located within the Beautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (formerly known as the North-West Frontier Province), administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
Cantonment confines received no attention. Bad for morale when we are fighting a war may be the argument of some in the media to explain away their shortcomings.

Does the media allow our civilian politicians the same amount of latitude in its coverage that it affords the military? For example, when economic indicators hint at a happier scenario than over the past seven/eight years, do we see focus on that?

Why the story is not yet over for PTI
[DAWN] After the PTI failed to score a landslide victory in the 2013 polls, it somehow got into its leadership's head that it was robbed of its rightful mandate. No amount of explaining would allay the PTI's reservations, and when words were not enough, a protest movement was launched to dislodge the current political setup.

The movement, too, did not yield a favourable result, but Imran Khan
... aka Taliban Khan, who ain't the sharpest bulb on the national tree...
just would not let go of the issue. His party was adamant that they had documentary evidence to support his allegations. The PTI was also insistent that the evidence would only be presented to a judicial commission, since it could trust no other state institution with such sensitive information.

But now, as the realisation from the verdict sets in, it will become painfully apparent to PTI's supporters, young and old, that there wasn't any truth to most of the allegations thrown around at the sit-in.

Javed Hashmi is right in that the verdict has cast dark clouds over Imran Khan's political future, but in some ways, this verdict might just be the best thing that has happened to PTI since 2013.

Home Front: Culture Wars
We Shouldn't Be Surprised At Planned Parenthood's Callous Inhumanity
[PJ Media] While Kirsten Powers' outrage at Planned Parenthood is well justified, it's not anything new to those familiar with the organization's ugly, racist, eugenicist history. And despite attempts by the group to downplay it, the behavior on display on those videos is, (as the president said recently in a different context, but much more accurately in this case) "in Planned Parenthood's DNA."

About a century ago, Margaret Sanger, the founder of the organization, created a journal called Birth Control Review. In it, she published numerous papers on the need for purifying the race through selective breeding and culling. Some of the titles included "Some Moral Aspects of Eugenics" (June 1920), "The Eugenic Conscience" (February 1921), "The Purpose of Eugenics" (December 1924), "Birth Control and Positive Eugenics" (July 1925), "Birth Control: The True Eugenics" (August 1928). From her own childhood experience, Sanger believed that overpopulation was the source of most societal ills, writing that she "...associated poverty, toil, unemployment, drunkenness, cruelty, quarreling, fighting, debts, jails with large families."

While many, then and now, might agree with that sentiment, she took it much further. In her seminal book Women and the New Race, she wrote that "The most merciful thing that the large family does to one of its infant members is to kill it." When it came to a one-child policy, China had nothing on her.

#1  birth control is really, really great. Giving women access to birth control and empopwering them to be able to use it is the one thing that works to alleviate poverty in every place it is tried, regardless of culture, geography, anything.

If given a choice women do not like being permanent baby machines, churning out 15 hungry mouths before menopause.

The vast majority of women prefer to have 2 or 3, maximum 5 (absolute max).

With 2 or 3 kids, they can educate and feed them better, they learn to read. The entire economic floor of the village rises.

There is nothing inhumane about family planning. In fact it leads to much better lives, especially for the poor.

#2  Why would any one who read Margaret Sanger's writings think this was going to result in anything less than what it's become?

But when he went fishing
The damn thing was missing:
"I reckon Planned Parenthood snuck it!"

#5  Is this the same guy from Nantucket whose thing was so long he could...oh never mind.

When the stat came out that more black babies were aborted in NYC than were born, I thought the rag would be off the bush.

I am surprised the NAACP doesn't realize the founder of Planned Parenthood is probably more racist and hateful than William Bedford Forrest leading a cavalry charge...I am waiting for someone to vote to dig up Ms. Sanger's body and move it out of town.

#10  Bill, I have to ask.

Since when has the NAACP given a rats ass about racism?

Oh sure they whine and wallow about it. But they don't do anything to actually help solve it.

They are simply the DNC apparatus to insure the blacks stay on the vote plantation. Just look at how they go after anyone who tries to escape!

#11  Fool,

Their track record proves you are probably right.

SO revise the question, when will the blacks realize that planned parenthood was founded by someone more racist than the founder of the KKK?
