[NYP] The nurse facing murder charges for the fiery Los Angeles crash that killed five was going 130 mph — it was revealed on Sunday — 40 miles faster than previously thought.
Nicole Linton, 37, was initially thought to be driving her Mercedes at 90 mph, but court papers obtained by the Los Angles Times on Sunday said she floored the pedal for at least five seconds before deliberately speeding into La Brea and Slauson avenues on Aug. 4.
"Further analysis reveals that her speed at impact was in fact 130 mph and that she floored the gas pedal for at least the 5 seconds leading into the crash, going from 122 mph to 130 mph," said the filing, which was released on Friday.
Prosecutors laid waste to the claims that she lost consciousness by citing surveillance video and data from her Mercedes. The documents said Linton had "complete control over steering, maintaining the tilt of the steering wheel to keep her car traveling directly toward the crowded intersection."
Skipping the victim piece, it's Linton's medical condition that is important now.
Linton’s attorneys last month filed medical forms that detailed her struggle with bipolar disorder and included a determination by doctors that the nurse had an "apparent lapse of consciousness" at the time of the crash.
[PJ] The young mother who was brutally beheaded last Thursday has been identified as 27-year-old Karina Castro. Castro was beheaded with a sword just before noon last Thursday in broad daylight as shocked neighbors watched. The attack took place in front of her apartment building. An earlier report stated she was 25 years old.
The alleged killer, Jose Solano Landaeta, reportedly cut off Castro’s head with a sword. He left her head under the car that her body was in. Cops swarmed in minutes later to find the grisly crime scene.
Shortly thereafter, Landaeta returned to the location with two friends and was promptly arrested.
Landaeta is the father of Castro’s one-year-old toddler. Castro also had a seven-year-old daughter.The Santa Monica Observer is reporting Landaeta was in the country illegally, claiming he came to the United States from Venezuela ten years ago on a tourist visa and never left.

[MMA] Former UFC fighter Elias Theodorou has died from cancer.
He was 34 years old.
MMA Fighting confirmed the news with a representative for Theodorou, following an initial report from BJPenn.com. TSN reports that Theodorou was battling stage 4 liver cancer and that his diagnosis was known to few.
Theodorou (19-3) was a veteran of 22 MMA bouts, including an 8-3 run in the UFC. He won The Ultimate Fighter: Nations middleweight tournament and holds notable victories over Eryk Anders, Dan Kelly, Cezar Ferreira, and Sam Alvey.
Along with his fighting career, Theodorou was best known for being an advocate for the use of medicinal marijuana in combat sports. In 2020, the Canadian veteran became the first fighter to receive a therapeutic use exemption for medical cannabis, which was granted by the British Columbia Athletic Commission.
Theodorou also made headlines when he served as a "ring boy" for an Invicta FC event in 2018.

[JustTheNews] Gov. Ron DeSantis activated the Florida National Guard in an effort to provide ongoing assistance to the state’s corrections officers.
Activating the guard will help reduce overtime for corrections officers and provide temporary staffing relief as the state continues to fill vacancies. They were activated immediately as of Sept. 9 for a period of nine months or until they are no longer needed.
The action, initiated through executive order, comes after the governor and the legislature authorized record pay increases to recruit and retain corrections officers. These and other incentives have already resulted in the state gaining 640 new officers since the 2022 legislative session ended this spring. It’s a record gain compared to a net loss of more than 465 officers during the same time period in the previous year, the governor’s office says.
The state’s goal is to continue to bring more highly qualified officers to the Florida Department of Corrections. The department’s primary directive is to “protect society by providing incarceration that will support the intentions of established criminal law,” according to Florida statute. It’s responsible for caring for and maintaining custody of more than 80,000 inmates who’ve been convicted of committing crimes.
While the department is authorized to employ more than 20,000 correctional and correctional probation officers, it’s been experiencing a severe shortage of employees, which has resulted in the department temporarily closing 176 inmate dorms and suspending 431 supervised work squads, the governor’s office says.
The “shortage threatens the safety of officers, inmates, and the public,” DeSantis said. The legislature’s incentive package has already begun to attract highly qualified individuals to fill vacancies for the long term; in the short term to provide relief to those in the National Guard will help fill the gaps.
According to the Florida Constitution, guardsmen and women can be used “to preserve the public peace [and] execute the laws of the state.” According to state statute, guardsmen and women can be used to “enhance domestic security” and “respond to any need for emergency aid to civil authorities” and to “provide extraordinary support to law enforcement upon request.”
Members of the Florida National Guard will be tasked with staffing guard towers and patrolling perimeters and control stations, which will enable correctional officers to focus more on supervising and caring for inmates. They won’t be responsible for any direct supervision of inmates “except where such supervision occurs as a normal part of manning control stations or when required in an emergency pertaining to safety and security,” according to the order.
The newly enacted Law Enforcement Recruitment Bonus Program provides one-time bonus payments of up to $5,000 for new Florida law enforcement officers and officers relocating to Florida from out of state.
A new Florida Law Enforcement Academy Scholarship Program also was made available to new recruits. It covers tuition, fees and up to $1,000 of eligible education expenses for trainees in a law enforcement basic recruit training program. Certified officers who relocate to Florida may also receive a reimbursement of up to $1,000 for equivalency training costs.
Among other programs launched in Florida, those in law enforcement may also qualify for the Hometown Heroes housing program, which helps those serving to be able to afford to live in the communities where they serve.

I had a casual conversation with a University of Oklahoma Campus Policeman (as a Land Grant University the University was technically not in the jurisdiction of the local city Norman and it was in the 1980's before negotiations modified that...). He had been a National Guard NCO because he was a returning Vietnam Vet when he and his squad was 'activated' for the 1973 McAlester Prison Riot. They were quickly trucked in and started manning the walls which was 'tense' because his squad was mostly green 16-18 year old 'kids with military weapons' ...not a happy thought. One anecdote concerned the older 'lifer' prisoners trickling out by ones and two to sit and form an armed circle in the middle of the yard during the riot and arson...

[BenarNews] Japan plans to beef up defenses on its remote islands in the East China Sea in preparation for a Taiwan Strait crisis, a move reflecting official strategic thinking but one that is likely to annoy China.The Japanese defense ministry wants to expand fuel and ammunition storage facilities on the Nansei (Ryukyu) island chain, whose westernmost tip lies only 110 kilometers (68 miles) from Taiwan, Nikkei Asia quoted Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada as saying this week.
Moving ammunition to the southwest would improve Japan’s deterrence capabilities, Hamada said, adding that an ammunition depot will be built on the island of Amami Oshima, located between Kyushu and Okinawa.
Port facilities and fuel depots will be set up in Okinawa, Kyushu and elsewhere to not only fulfill Japanese defense forces needs but support American forces responding to a Taiwan conflict.
The defense ministry also plans to bolster missile and electronic warfare capacity on the Nansei Islands, according to Japan’s 2022 defense white paper.
Japan is setting up electronic warfare units at three locations on those islands this year. In 2023, one will be dispatched to Yonaguni, the Japanese island closest to Taiwan.
