Texas teen charged with killing mother as she visited son's grave
[NYPOST] A Texas teen has been charged with killing a woman as she visited her son’s gravesite, police said.

Christian Lamar Weston, 17, is being held without bond in the fatal shooting of Yolanda N’Gaojia, 52, as she mourned her son Amir on what would have been his 22nd birthday, Killeen police said Saturday.

N’Gaojia was bumped off March 22 at the Calvary Baptist Church Garden of Memories Cemetery, where a second person was also shot but survived, police said. N’Gaojia died from her wounds sustained at the cemetery just hours later, KXXV reported.

N’Gaojia’s son, a New Jersey native, died on New Year’s Day, according to his obituary. He was one of the couple’s three children, her ex-husband Kineh N’Gaojia previously said.

"I hope he gets the death penalty
," Kineh N’Gaojia wrote on Facebook Saturday after police announced Weston’s arrest.

What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Vegas landlord, 81, is accused of preying on mother-of-five by forcing her to sign 'Direct Consent for Sexual Intercourse' contract with him before renting out four-bedroom home
“See? It was all consensual.” Ick.
  • Allan Rothstein, 81, is accused of making a woman sign a document giving him consent for sex 'and/or Fallatio or Cunnilingus' in order to lease a property

  • The complaint also claims Rothstein charged the mother of five in excess of what was agreed upon in her Section 8 voucher and tried to evict her

  • Additionally it says Rothstein knew the Las Vegas home was in default and was subject to foreclosure but never told the mother who was renting the property

  • Rothstein's real estate broker and property management licenses have since been revoked by the Nevada Real Estate Division

  • He is denying in federal court that he violated the Fair Housing Act

  • But sources say there are more victims he has preyed upon over the years

Pfizer CEO Gets the Chinese Crud
[NY Post] Pfizer Chief Executive Officer Albert Bourla said on Monday he had tested positive for COVID-19 and was experiencing very mild symptoms. Bourla, 60, said he had started a course of the company’s oral COVID-19 antiviral treatment, Paxlovid, and was isolating and following all public health precautions.
If it’s a mild case, why bother taking Paxlovid? Wouldn’t it be better to leave it for those who truly need it?
Paxlovid is an antiviral medication that is used to treat high-risk people, such as older patients. Bourla claims he has received four doses of the COVID vaccine developed by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.

Dog catches monkey pox from French gay owners
[THEPOSTMILLENNIAL] Doctors have reported the first confirmed case of monkeypox that spread to a dog, potentially through its owners, a gay couple, calling into question whether pets should be isolated from owners diagnosed with the virus.
Or at least a bit of self-control on the owners' part.
According to medical journal The Lancet, on June 10, 2022, two men went to Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital, in Gay Paree, La Belle France, with the men complaining of anal ulcerations and rashes that had spread.
Sounds... unpleasant. The more reason to keep yer pants on when interacting with others.
The Lancet describes the couple as "non-exclusive," and says that patient one is a 44-year-old Latino man with HIV, while the second patient is a 27-year-old white man who is HIV-negative.
At least so far.
"The men had presented with anal ulceration 6 days after sex with other partners. In patient 1, anal ulceration was followed by a vesiculopustular rash on the face, ears, and legs; in patient 2, on the legs and back. In both cases, rash was associated with asthenia, headaches, and fever 4 days later," The Lancet describes.
My mental reconstruction of this episode is... yucky.
"We wuz playing nekkid Twister and the dog joined in..."
The two men were diagnosed with monkeypox through a PCR test, using skin, oropharynx, and anal samples.
"Hey! Careful back there!"
"Time for the oropharynx samples!"
"Ummm... What the hell is that?"
"It's an oropharynx sampler!"

Monkeypox has been spreading worldwide, mainly in communities of men who have sex with men, in recent months, with the World Health Organization declaring a global health emergency in July.
Not limited to men who have sex with men either.
Hence the mainly. Sometimes it’s been small children, which is quite upsetting.
12 days after the men were diagnosed, their 4-year-old male Italian greyhound began presenting symptoms, including "mucocutaneous lesions, abdomen pustules and a thin anal ulceration."
Golly. I wonder how that happened?
The dog subsequently received a positive PCR test result for monkeypox, using samples from the dog’s oral and anal cavity.
"Open up, doggy! Legume, hand me the oropharynx sampler!"
"Yipe!"
"Damn! Those Italian greyhounds are fast!"

"Monkeypox virus DNA sequences from the dog and patient 1 were compared by next-generation sequencing," The Lancet reported.
That was once they caught the dog.
"Both samples contained virus of the hMPXV-1 clade, lineage B.1, which has been spreading in non-endemic countries since April, 2022, and, as of Aug 4, 2022, has infected more than 1700 people in La Belle France, mostly concentrated in Gay Paree, where the dog first developed symptoms."
[WHINE!]
"Wosssa matter, doggy... Eww!"

The men said that they had been co-sleeping with their dog,
Ewww!
but noted that they had been careful to keep their dog away from contact with other pets or humans following the onset of the pair’s symptoms, 13 days before the dog began presenting these symptoms.
Maybe they shoulda just left the doggy alone?
The Lancet noted that testing results concluded a "100 percent sequence homology" between the virus that infected patient one and the dog.
That sound pretty certain.
"In endemic countries, only wild animals (rodents and primates) have been found to carry monkeypox virus. However,
nothing needs reforming like other people's bad habits...
transmission of monkeypox virus in prairie dogs has been described in the USA and in captive primates in Europa
...the land mass occupying the space between the English Channel and the Urals, also known as Moslem Lebensraum...
that were in contact with imported infected animals.
Define "contact." No, don't. I don't wanna know.
Infection among domesticated animals, such as dogs and cats, has never been reported," The Lancet reported.
"Here, kitty!"
[ROWR!]
"Jean-Pierre, put that thing away before you infect someone!"

The Lancet states that "to the best of our knowledge," the close timeline of symptoms displayed in both the owners and the dog "suggest human-to-dog transmission of monkeypox virus."
"Well, Bowser was askin' for it!"
"Given the dog's skin and mucosal lesions as well as the positive monkeypox virus PCR results from anal and oral swabs, we hypothesise a real canine disease, not a simple carriage of the virus by close contact with humans or airborne transmission (or both)," they wrote.
Sure. Doggy just happened to come down with it.
"Our findings should prompt debate on the need to isolate pets from monkeypox virus-positive individuals. We call for further investigation on secondary transmissions via pets," The Lancet concluded.

Africa Subsaharan
Zimbabwe Hails Success Of Gold Coin Issuance - Lower Denominations Coming
[ZERO] Declaring its July launch of one-ounce gold coins a success, Zimbabwe's central bank says it will begin issuing and selling coins in smaller gold denominations this fall.

"Following the successful launch of the gold coins on 25 July 2022 and in response to public demand, the bank shall introduce and release into the market gold coins in units of a tenth ounce, quarter ounce and half an ounce
for sale with effect from mid-November 2022," Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya said this week.

The coins, which can be purchased from approved banks, were introduced to combat rampant inflation driven by locals exchanging Zimbabwean dollars for US dollars. In July, Zimbabwe's price inflation rate was over 250%.

The coins have "liquid asset status," according to the Zimbabwe central bank. That is, they're "capable of being easily converted to cash and [are] tradable locally and internationally...[and] may also be used for transactional purposes."

However, with one-ounce coins currently worth about $1,800, they're out of reach for typical citizens. The average civil servant in the country makes just $2,600 a year, according to the BBC.

The one-ounce coins are called "Mosi-oa-Tunya." That's the Tonga-language name for Victoria Falls, and translates to "The Smoke Which Thunders." When sold by banks, they're priced at the world price of gold plus a 5% minting and distribution fee.

Economy
Texans Blame Biden for Economic Woes
[Dallas Morning News] Texans are stressed about the economy, cutting back on spending and placing the blame on the policies of President Joe Biden.

Seven in 10 Texans say they are more worried about finances than they were a year ago and 87% said increased prices have had an impact on their household situation, according to a new survey of 1,384 registered Texas voters by The Dallas Morning News and the University of Texas at Tyler.

Gas prices are hitting family and business finances hard and forcing them to cut back on spending for groceries and entertainment, said several Texans who took the poll. That sentiment is backed up by financial advisers and community aid organizations that say there is increased worry in the region as prices for energy, housing, groceries, insurance, utilities and other necessities continue to rise.

The poll, which took place between Aug. 1 and 7, comes as the Dallas-Fort Worth region registered inflation rates above the national average in July, even though gas prices are coming down sharply after peaks in the spring.
In your dreams. Got any data to back that up? Gas was up 20 cents a gallon this morning.
Some 48% of respondents said President Joe Biden and Congress were most responsible for inflation and the rising cost of living, including 75% of Republicans. About a quarter placed blame on supply chain problems, while the policies of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott and the state legislators garnered 9% and 12% cited Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
A lot of kool-aid drinkers.
Biden's Economists have placed the blame for inflation, which was 9.4% year over year in July for North Texas, on a complex set of factors from the war in Ukraine and supply chain problems to a shortage of labor and increased government stimulus since 2020. The Federal Reserve has moved to increase key interest rates from almost zero to 2.5% since March in hopes of taming inflation and even slowing the hot labor market.

"Groceries and gas are a killer," said Lusk, who considers himself a libertarian. "We just don’t have anything left anymore." Lusk said he also places the blame on the Biden administration, particularly for a moratorium on offshore drilling and his opposition to the Keystone Pipeline project.

"I didn’t vote for Trump either time, but his hands-off approach to most things economic tended to allow the economy to improve. And it improved significantly while he was in office."
Pretty insightful for a 45-year old program coordinator at a west-Texas university.

How Germany is scrambling to save energy
[DW] As they begin to grasp the extent of looming energy price hikes, people across Germany are cutting consumption. The same goes for city governments, such as Cologne

's.

A familiar sight has vanished from the nighttime skyline in Cologne. The city's cathedral, the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany, is no longer illuminated at night. The move is one of the most visible signs that a massive energy crunch is looming due as supplies from Russia dwindle because of its invasion of Ukraine.

"There is no reason to panic yet, but we also have to prepare for an acute emergency," said Andrea Blome, who is in charge of Cologne's official energy crisis team.

Government Corruption
14 FBI Whistleblowers (and Counting) Can't Be Wrong: There's a Problem at the Bureau
[PJ] Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) revealed that FBI whistleblowers are popping up like pimples on prom night.

"Fourteen FBI agents have come to our office as whistleblowers, and they are good people," Jordan revealed to Fox News. "There are lots of good people in the FBI. It’s the top that is the problem."

"Some of these good agents are coming to us, telling us what’s going on, the political nature now of the Justice Department, talking about the school board issue, about a whole host of issues," Jordan continued.

Earlier this summer, Jordan claimed six whistleblowers came forward to congress. Two had information about the school board memo referring to concerned parents as "domestic terrorists" and four more had details about the January 6 breach at the Capitol.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) claimed in July that FBI whistleblowers visited his office to provide information and disclosures regarding investigations into the international business dealings of Hunter Biden, who 51 former "intel specialists" assured us smelled like "Russian disinformation."

It seems like whistleblowing at the FBI is becoming more popular than the latest TikTok challenge.

UN peacekeepers from 12 countries 'have fathered and abandoned thousands of children' over past 20 years in Democratic Republic of Congo
Why our troops loathe serving on UN peacekeeping assignments.
[Daily Mail, Where America Gets Its News] A shocking new report has claimed that UN peacekeepers from 12 different countries have fathered and then abandoned thousands of children in poverty-stricken Democratic Republic of the Congo
...formerly the Congo Free State, Belgian Congo, Zaire, and who knows what else, not to be confused with the Brazzaville Congo aka Republic of Congo, which is much smaller and much more (for Africa) stable. DRC gave the world Patrice Lumumba and Joseph Mobutu, followed by years of tedious civil war. Its principle industry seems to be the production of corpses. With a population of about 74 million it has lots of raw material...
since 1999.

The report also claims that soldiers and police operating under a UN mandate in the war torn country have abused children, raped young women and traded food for 'survival sex.'

One victim was just ten years old when her aunt trafficked her to UN peacekeepers who plied her with beer, raped her and got her pregnant, the report states.

The majority of the absent fathers were from Tanzania and South Africa, while others were from Morocco, Uruguay, Nepal and Bangladesh.

The men were in the country in roles ranging from soldiers, officers and pilots to drivers, cooks, doctors and photographers.

UN peacekeepers first went into the DRC in 1999 as part of a ceasefire agreement to stop the Second Congo War, fought between itself and Rwanda, Uganda, Angola, Zim-bob-we and Nabibia along with rebel movements.

#1  The republic of Congo should be thankful. Those children may just turn out less of the numbskulls than you. That is our gift to you.

Hell, maybe the UN could go into the business of genetically ironing out flaws in societies! Isn't that on the agenda anyway?

Researchers prove humans lived in once-fertile Kalahari Desert
[Jerusalem Post] Researchers from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, found evidence that contradicts the hypothesis that humans only lived in the region during wetter periods.

Researchers found evidence that the dry plateau of Kalahari in South Africa once had abundant sources of water, including streams, pools and waterfalls.

In a peer-reviewed study published in PLOS ONE, researchers conducted data sequencing on samples from deposits of tufa, a porous sedimentary rock made of calcium carbonate that is formed by the evaporation of fresh groundwater as springs.

The researchers, led by Jessica von der Meden, a PhD candidate at the University of Cape Town's (UCT) Department of Geological Sciences and Human Evolution Research Institute, used low-impact sampling in order to preserve the surrounding tufa deposits.

The team used a geological hammer, mallet and chisel to collect 18 of the tufa samples, and then, using a modified drill with a water swivel and a custom diamond-tipped barrel, they collected eleven small cores from the deposits.

The researchers then encased the cores in epoxy and then cut in half with a diamond rock saw and polished before making thin sections to study using a polarizing light microscope.

Here in this rainbow nation
once holidayed homo apraxis.
They would eat on a tufa table,
tofu bolognaise their staple,
not a care for the local rakshas.

#2  Clearly the Kalahari was wet before man-made global warming.

#6  I guess the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy" was based on a fantasy that humans have ever lived in the Kalahari.

Wonderful film, though.

#8  I’m surprised Plos One would publish this study.
Pretty basic research on already proven topics. Adds nothing new.
I suspect von der Meden is week connected.
