Watch: Louisville Slugger Sucker-Punches Mayor
[ZeroHedge] One moment, Louisville mayor Greg Fischer is hugging someone. In the next, he's on the receiving end of a vicious sucker punch that sends him straight to the ground.

That's the scene captured on surveillance video Saturday night, as Fischer mingled at "Fourth Street Live," an entertainment and retail complex in downtown Louisville.

In the video, the attacker casually strolls up to Fischer before unleashing a forceful punch on the unsuspecting third-term Democrat.

As is increasingly the case with urban violence, the perpetrator hasn't been identified and has thus far escaped any consequences. Video shows a man briefly confronted the attacker, but nobody made any effort to detain him—despite the fact that the mayor was accompanied by a protective detail.

WHY didn't they go in? Chilling first image emerges from inside Texas school showing cops with rifles and ballistic shields in corridor 19 minutes after gunman entered - but they waited another FIFTY-EIGHT MINUTES to storm classroom
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • A freeze-frame from surveillance cameras inside Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, show police inside the building at 11:52am on May 24

  • The gunman, lor:maroon;>Salvador Ramos, had entered the school 19 minutes earlier, but was not shot dead until 12:50pm

  • Serious questions have been raised as to why the police did not immediately storm the school and end the massacre

  • Monday's new detail will heap further pressure on Uvalde police as the grieving parents and relatives of the 19 children and two teachers demand answers

#7  I was wrong. It looked like a closed scene because everyone was walking about and standing around looking.

Gets worse every day. Stuff like suits to prevent body camera release, that the chief is an AA hire, or worse waiting for instructions from a political officer, not trying an alleged suite door.

Still the shooter's fault, and anything but a mentally addled LGB connection is allowed, but damn man.

#11  Lots of fault going around it seems, poor leadership (ignorance and cowardice?), failure to understand the lessons of prior shootings and the need for aggressive, dynamic entry, multi-agency confusion, the list goes on and on. But the one question I have from a macro perspective is the impact of years of seeing LE found personally liable when their agencies failed to defend them. You make a mistake being aggressive, and you lose everything, pension, job, even your personal freedom. George Floyd, Freddie Grey, Michae Brown, the list goes on ad nauseam. We have moved from immunity whenthe officer has the best intent and acts on it, to liability when a race hustler like Benjamin Crump takes the case and your agency folds up on you. When you doubt your agency has your back, you doubt the wisdom of making decision and punt upwards. What you tend to get eventually get are the SFPD drones who take reports and avoid any pursuit actions. LE is becomming less a great career than a lifetime course in minefield avoidance for a great pension.

#12  ^ Yes. If the perp is anything other than a middle aged white guy with MAGA tattoos, the cries of "police murdered a brown person" will be instant and shrill. In this case, it was a brown cross-dresser and the only reason the cops aren't getting Chauvin-ized is that so many school kids died and it's election year anti-gun scaremongering time.

#15  Quick search:
When told that the Texas Department of Public Safety said he was not cooperating, Arredondo said, “I’ve been on the phone with them every day.”

But in a statement released before that interview, the Texas Department of Public Safety said, “The chief of the Uvalde [School District] police provided an initial interview but has not responded to a request for a follow-up interview with the Texas Rangers that was made two days ago.”

Yesterday, Arredondo was sworn in as a newly elected member of the City Council. The ceremony was not open to the public. "Uvalde City Council members were sworn in today as per the city charter," Uvalde Mayor Don McLaughlin said in a statement. "Out of respect for the families who buried their children today, and who are planning to bury their children in the next few days, no ceremony was held."

But some criticized that Arredondo was sworn in at all.

“Rewarding failure,” one person on Twitter wrote.

“During a week where the words accountability and transparency have been all over the news and on people’s mouths, Uvalde City Council holding a secret ceremony is quite something,” Texas-based NPR reporter Sergio Martínez-Beltrán wrote.

McLaughlin said there was nothing preventing him from taking his new position. “There is nothing in the city charter, Election code, or Texas constitution that prohibits him from taking the oath of office,” he said.

At least 1 killed, 8 injured in shooting on Harlem street
[NYPOST] Nine people were shot — one fatally — when gunfire broke out in Harlem early Monday morning, police said.

Two women and seven men — including a 21-year-old man who departed this vale of tears — were shot near the intersection of East 139th Street and Fifth Avenue at about 12:40 a.m., according to the NYPD.

Responding officers found five people shot on a footpath just under the Madison Avenue Bridge, NYPD Chief Brian McGee, the commanding officer of Detective Borough Manhattan North, said at a morning presser.

Missouri men charged in black-market fireworks explosion that killed 4
[NYPOST] Two Missouri men are facing murder charges after a home near St. Louis went kaboom! Friday, killing four people — including three teens — who were assembling black-market fireworks in a garage.

Terrell Cooks, 37, and Seneca Mahan, 43, are each charged with three counts of second-degree murder and several other charges in Friday’s explosion near Black Jack, about a 30-minute drive north of St. Louis. They were charged before a fourth victim died Saturday.

St. Louis County prosecutors say Cooks and Mahan made fireworks and directed younger people on how to load the canisters and attach a fuse for lighting. They would then sell the fireworks to others, despite neither having a license to make or sell fireworks.

Investigators have been identified as Travell Eason, 16; Christopher Jones, 17; Damario Cooks, 18; and William Jones, 21.

Friday’s powerful blast shook other homes and blew out neighbors’ windows. Authorities said a 12-year-old child was also injured in the earth-shattering kaboom, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that police could not provide details Sunday about how many others were still hospitalized.

Court documents say Cooks admitted that he and Mahan made bombs designed to make a loud bang and bright flash. Investigators saw Cooks moving boxes of chemicals used to make explosives to his vehicle after Friday’s explosion, and they found large quantities of "completed explosive weapons and components to manufacture them" when they searched a home and other vehicles connected to Cooks.

#2  ...A little bit of trivia: when I was in the Air Force, and illegal/dangerous fireworks were confiscated by the SPs, it was often my job to get them safely to the Munitions Storage Area for safe storage until EOD could dispose of them.

And to a man, we would rather work around an unexploded bomb than the fireworks. I hate that stuff with the white-hot intensity of ten thousand suns. At BEST, the cheap stuff is poorly and haphazardly made with little regard for safety or quality control.

15-year-old boy dead, 3 injured in Washington, DC festival shooting
[NYPOST] A 15-year-old boy was killed and three others, including a police officer, suffered gunshot wounds during a shooting at a music festival in Washington, DC Sunday evening.
An "unauthorized" music festival.
Gunfire erupted on a street corner as crowds began to disperse from the "advocacy" festival called Moechella — which officers had shut down moments earlier over dangerous conditions.
Moechella, just like Coachella, but with shootings and death
The event was advertised as a peaceful demonstration at 14th and U Street celebrating Juneteenth, but police described a chaotic scene where several illegal guns were recovered over the course of two-and-a-half hours.
"Vibrant and Diverse"
"When you have large gatherings in a dense area, all it takes is one person introducing a gun to the situation that makes it deadly," Metropolitan Police Department Chief Robert Contee said.

"In this case, unfortunately a 15-year-old lost his life."

The teenager was killed, while the officer was shot in his lower extremity and is being treated at an area hospital. The two other adults injured were also rushed to the hospital and are in stable, pH balanced condition, according to the police chief.

Before shots rang out and struck the four victims, a fight broke out among attendees, multiple unrelated illegal firearms were recovered and several people were maimed when an unknown disturbance cause people to scatter and create a stampede, Contee said.

Pull! Amazon drones are coming to town. Some locals want to shoot them.
[MSN (gag, hack)] LOCKEFORD, Calif. — Six months ago, Amazon contacted local authorities in this rural town to let them know it planned to launch its long-awaited drone delivery service here. But as of last week — when Amazon made the news public — many of the residents of unincorporated Lockeford, with its vineyards, fruit stands, and ranches, still didn’t know about the plan.

Sweltering streets: Hundreds of homeless die in extreme heat
PHOENIX (AP) — Hundreds of blue, green and grey tents are pitched under the sun’s searing rays in downtown Phoenix, a jumble of flimsy canvas and plastic along dusty sidewalks. Here, in the hottest big city in America, thousands of homeless people swelter as the summer’s triple digit temperatures arrive.

The stifling tent city has ballooned amid pandemic-era evictions and surging rents that have dumped hundreds more people onto the sizzling streets that grow eerily quiet when temperatures peak in the midafternoon. A heat wave earlier this month brought temperatures of up to 114 degrees (45.5 Celsius) - and it’s only June. Highs reached 118 degrees (47.7 Celsius) last year.

"During the summer, it’s pretty hard to find a place at night that’s cool enough to sleep without the police running you off," said Chris Medlock, a homeless Phoenix man known on the streets as "T-Bone" who carries everything he owns in a small backpack and often beds down in a park or a nearby desert preserve to avoid the crowds.
I thought T-Bone was Cory "Spartacus" Booker's imaginary friend in Newark?
"If a kind soul could just offer a place on their couch indoors maybe more people would live," Medlock said at a dining room where homeless people can get some shade and a free meal.

Excessive heat causes more weather-related deaths in the United States than hurricanes, flooding and tornadoes combined.

4 Times FDA Was Dead Wrong About an ‘Approved’ Drug
[CHD] As history shows, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention don’t always get it right the first time they declare a drug "safe" — in fact, sometimes they’re dead wrong.

Throughout the pandemic, health officials have urged the public to "trust the science," reassuring people that "the science" is the basis for any recommendations originating from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Dr. Anthony Fauci, chief medical advisor to President Biden on COVID-19, at one point even went as far as to tell the media if they criticize him, "They’re really criticizing science because I represent science. That’s dangerous."

In the U.S., the FDA approves new drugs, including vaccines — or, as is the case with COVID-19 vaccines, grants them Emergency Use Authorization. The CDC then recommends them.

Once that process is completed, it’s assumed the public — and the mainstream media — will unquestionably trust that the drugs or other treatments are safe and effective.

But as we’ve seen recently — when Newsweek last week broke with mainstream media and published two opinion pieces criticizing the U.S. government’s response to COVID-19 and claiming Americans don’t trust the CDC — not everyone buys everything the FDA and CDC are selling.

As history shows, the FDA and CDC don’t always get it right — in fact, sometimes they’re dead wrong.

Whether they err because they allow pharmaceutical companies to deceive them, or because the agencies are populated with "experts" whose financial conflicts of interest cloud their judgment, the results are the same.

There is a lack of a firewall between the FDA and drugmakers who pay much of the agency’s fees.

For example, the current FDA commissioner, Dr. Robert Califf, who had previously served in that role and was again nominated by President Biden, has 50 conflicts of interest.

After leaving the FDA in 2017, Califf became head of medical strategy at Google’s parent company, Alphabet Inc. He also presided over a discredited drug trial of the blood thinner Xarelto, which was linked to at least 370 deaths, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Discussing the Vioxx scandal on PBS, Califf said, "Many of us consult with the pharmaceutical industry, which I think is a very good thing. They need ideas and then the decision about what they do is really up to the person who is funding the study."

As the FDA and CDC unleash risky, experimental COVID-19 vaccines on babies and toddlers, it’s worth looking back at some of their deadliest mistakes....

Caribbean-Latin America
45 migrants sent back to Cuba after being stopped in boats off Florida Keys
[NYPOST] Dozens of illegal immigrants colonists were sent back to Cuba after being stopped in four vessels off the Florida Keys, US Coast Guard officials said.

Boats carrying a total of 45 Cubans were spotted by civilians beginning late Wednesday about 12 miles south of Boot Key, according to the US Coast Guard 7th District on Sunday.

Three other "rustic" vessels carrying more migrants colonists headed to the US were then intercepted by Coast Guard Cutter Charles Sexton’s crew on Friday, including one about 17 miles south of Long Key.

Photos released by the Coast Guard Sunday showed the migrants colonists tightly huddled on small wooden boats, including one that appeared to be extremely tattered.

"The possibility of being stopped by Coast Guard crews while illegally migrating through the Caribbean Sea is high," Lt. Cmdr. Mark Cobb of the Coast Guard’s Seventh District said in a statement. "No one should risk their lives on unsafe rustic vessels in unpredictable seas."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
‘The impossible': Ukraine's secret, deadly rescue missions
KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — As was his habit before each flight, the veteran Ukrainian army pilot ran a hand along the fuselage of his Mi-8 helicopter, caressing the heavy transporter’s metal skin to bring luck to him and his crew.

They would need it. Their destination — a besieged steel mill in the brutalized city of Mariupol — was a death trap. Some other crews didn’t make it back alive.

Still, the mission was vital, even desperate. Ukrainian troops were pinned down, their supplies running low, their dead and injured stacking up. Their last-ditch stand at the Azovstal mill was a growing symbol of Ukraine’s defiance in the war against Russia. They could not be allowed to perish.

The 51-year-old pilot — identified only by his first name, Oleksandr — flew just the one mission to Mariupol, and he considered it the most difficult flight of his 30-year-career. He took the risk, he said, because he didn’t want the Azovstal fighters to feel forgotten.

In the charred hell-scape of that plant, in an underground bunker-turned-medical station that provided shelter from death and destruction above, word started reaching the wounded that a miracle might be coming. Among those told that he was on the list for evacuation was a junior sergeant who’d been shredded by mortar rounds, butchering his left leg and forcing its amputation above the knee.

"Buffalo" was his nom de guerre. He had been through so much, but one more deadly challenge loomed: escape from Azovstal.

A series of clandestine, against-the-odds, terrain-hugging, high-speed helicopter missions to reach the Azovstal defenders in March, April and May are being celebrated in Ukraine as among the most heroic feats of military derring-do of the four-month war. Some ended in catastrophe; each grew progressively riskier as Russian air defense batteries caught on.

The full story of the seven resupply and rescue missions has yet to be told. But from exclusive interviews with two wounded survivors; a military intelligence officer who flew on the first mission; and pilot interviews provided by the Ukrainian army, The Associated Press has pieced together the account of one of the last flights, from the perspective of both the rescuers and the rescued.

Only after more than 2,500 defenders who remained in the Azovstal ruins had started surrendering did Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy first give wind of the missions and their deadly cost.

US intel officials admit they didn't see that Russia's military was a 'hollow force.' Here's what they did see and how they missed it.
[Business Insider] More than 100 days after Russia renewed its attack on Ukraine, and the world has seen that the Russian military isn't what it was believed to be.

The Russian force the US military and intelligence agencies believed to be a near-peer adversary hasn't shown up. The force that did appear had its main thrust blunted by smaller Ukrainian units. After taking heavy casualties and achieving few objects, Moscow pulled back its troops and lowered its ambitions.

Something was off in US assessments of Russia's military, and the Pentagon and intelligence community have admitted that they missed indications that Moscow was in fact fielding a "hollow force."

The US intelligence community is conducting an internal review of its processes after underestimating Ukrainian resolve and overestimating Russian military capabilities.

The faulty assessment in Ukraine comes after the Pentagon's extremely poor assessment of the Afghan military, which US leaders thought would be able to hold off the Taliban for months after the US withdrawal.

During a Senate Armed Services committee hearing in May, lawmakers questioned Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, and Lt. Gen. Scott Berrier, the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, about their agencies' assumptions in Ukraine, focusing on assessments that Kyiv would fall in three to four days and that the war would last only two weeks.

"We assessed their capacity to face the size of the Russian forces that were amassed on their border was going to be very difficult for them," Berrier said of the Ukrainians.

[Vesti] The General Staff also urged the use of official sources of information
The Russian army continues to carry out missile and air strikes against military and civilian infrastructure on the territory of Ukraine. This is stated in the operational summary of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as of 18:00 on Monday, June 20, 2022.

Due to heavy losses, the personnel of individual units of the occupying forces have a very low level of moral and psychological state and are looking for an opportunity to avoid further participation in hostilities.

According to available information, this is common among the personnel of the 1st Army Corps of the Russian occupation forces, and specifically in units withdrawn to restore combat capability from the regions of Kherson, Nikolaev and Popasnaya.

The General Staff also called for the use of official sources of information and not to spread rumors.

Besides:

  • in the Volyn, Polessky and Seversk directions without significant changes. At the last, the enemy fired on civilian infrastructure in the border areas of the Sumy region;in the Kharkov direction, the enemy unsuccessfully tried to conduct reconnaissance in force near Rtishchevka in order to identify weak points in the defense of our troops. In addition, shelling of civilian infrastructure was recorded in the areas of the settlements of Udy, Ukrainka, Korobochkino, Mikhailovka and Petrovka;

Fighting for Severodonetsk is already underway in the industrial area
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[Vesti] The Ukrainian side controls only the territory of the Azot plant

Fights with Russian troops for Severodonetsk are already underway in the industrial zone. This was stated in the Telegram of the head of the Lugansk regional military administration, Sergei Gaidai.

According to him, today the extremely difficult situation remains along the entire front line in the Lugansk region.

“We state that the orcs are starting a large-scale offensive in our region, they have accumulated a sufficient number of reserves, and today all the free settlements of the region are on fire. In Severodonetsk, fighting continues already in the industrial zone, Ukrainian troops control only the territory of the Azot plant ,” said Gaidai.

The head of the region specified that the enemy is advancing along the Lisichansk-Bakhmut highway, and the settlements close to it are under constant shelling. Lisichansk itself is under fire almost around the clock, the number of victims cannot be established.

"Ukrainian defenders are not surrounded, moreover, they inflict significant losses on the enemy. Hospitals and morgues in the occupied territories are overflowing with rashists ," Gaidai added.

#1  Re the 10 to 1 Russian advantage in artillery:
Russia is firing as many as 50,000 artillery rounds a day into Ukrainian positions, and the Ukrainians can only hit back with around 5,000 to 6,000 rounds a day, he said. The United States has committed to deliver 220,000 rounds of ammunition — enough to match Russian firepower for around four days.
50,000 rounds a day might sound like a lot, but it was well within Germany's industrial capacity a century ago. During WWI, it fired 222m rounds over 4 years, or ~150K rounds a day.

#2  The small arms analogy would be if 1 side had muzzle loading muskets and the other side had M-16's. Given that roughly 2/3 of friendly casualties in WWII were inflicted by enemy mortars and howitzers, it's clear why the 10-1 Russian superiority needs to be whittled down by Western supplies if the Ukrainians are to merely hold, never mind advance.
Artillery and mortar fire together accounted for 65 percent of the total casualties in the European and Mediterranean theaters

#4  Here's a guy who actually knows what he's talking about -- as opposed to the blowhard blogger above: Colonel Markus Reisner of Austria. His latest: Heavy Weapons To Ukraine

Col. Reisner is sympathetic to the Ukrainians but he doesn't lie or bullshit. He makes clear that the proposed weapons deliveries -- which he describes clearly in precise detail -- will not make a difference in the Donbas.

This is for multiple reasons:
1) the Russians destroy many of them before they can even be used
2) the Russians capture many of them
3) the Ukrainians lack training in how to use them and their few experienced operators are suffering extremely high casualty rates
4) the quantities are far too small to make a difference even if the Ukrainians were properly trained on them

#5  This Austrian guy is just Douglas MacGregor without the military experience. A Redditor comments:
That might come as a shock maybe, but what I've gleaned from his previous videos is that, first, aside from social media, he doesn't have any additional intelligence sources. Yes, that dude is, just like all of us, working with the stuff OSINT aggregators are putting together.

Second, for whatever reason, his intelligence is based to a larger part on pro-Ru sources. At least that's how most of his last few videos looked like to me.

And third, that dude might appear competent, but he hasn't gotten the best track record. He got interviewed by the Austrian television on TV in February and was like "This is going to be over in a couple of days", and some time later, when it was obvious that it wasn't, he was interviewed again and was like "Well, they're f**ked in a month".

The only difference between you and me and Colonel Reisner is that he got a military education. But from what he's presenting in his videos, he doesn't seem to be privy to any additional information we don't have, but the information he relies on seems to have a pro-Ru slant.

Anyway:

When he's saying in his video that the Kherson bridgehead got destroyed, then I'll bet you a 100 $ that this is not Austrian spy satellites or Austrian HUMINT assets on the ground which let him come to this conclusion. That's pro-Ru OSINT sources, I'm sure of that. And these have claimed for weeks that the Kherson bridgehead has been destroyed.

However, for some reason, all the pontoon bridges the Ukrainians put up there, still exist. Why would that be if they got wiped out?

#6  I think there's this perception that the Austrians are neutral, that they're this cuddly teddy-bearish country. In reality, it's a nest of unrepentant Nazis. Real Nazis, not the LARPers who defended Mariupol alongside Ukrainian Jews from the Russian forces besieging it, on orders from a Jewish President, many of whose closest advisers are also Jewish. Kurt Waldheim wasn't a Nazi Party member, but he was on scene with the relevant Wehrmacht units when Greeks and Serbs were massacred in large numbers. Austria elected him president anyway.

Jorg Haider became a bigwig in Austrian politics because in spite of his repeated associations with Nazis:
Haider was frequently criticized for statements in praise of Nazi policies, or considered antisemitic.[43] International reports on Haider often referred to his remark that the Nazi government had produced a "proper employment policy" as compared to the SPÖ government. He was forced to resign as governor of the Carinthia province in 1991 because of the incident. Haider years later apologized.[15] On one occasion during a parliamentary debate, Haider described World War II concentration camps as "punishment camps".[15]

On several occasions Haider made remarks about Austrian World War II veterans that were represented as broad endorsement of the war and of the Nazi SS. Speaking to a gathering of veterans from several countries in 1990, he said that the veterans were "decent people of good character" and "remain true to their convictions". Haider stated that he did not specifically address Waffen-SS veterans with his remarks.[15] On another occasion, he said, "the Waffen-SS was part of the Wehrmacht (German military) and because of that it deserves every honour and recognition".[44] (The Waffen-SS was not part of the Wehrmacht.)[45]

In 2000, at a gathering of Wehrmacht veterans in Ulrichsberg, including Waffen-SS veterans, he said, "Those who come to Ulrichsberg are not the old Nazis. They are not neo-Nazis, they are not criminals."[citation needed]

Haider also compared the deportation of Jews by the Nazis to the expulsion of Sudeten Germans from Czechoslovakia after World War II.[46] His detractors pointed to a punning reference to the leader of the Jewish community of Vienna, Ariel Muzicant; Haider indicated that he did not understand how someone named Ariel (also the name of a popular laundry detergent) could have gathered so much filth, implying the real estate agent's business methods were crooked.[47] Haider's critics characterized the remark as antisemitic.[47]

He maintained that Muzicant faked antisemitic hate letters to himself. He later withdrew this and other accusations, and apologized for his "derogatory remarks".[48]

Haider was closely watched by Mossad, the Israeli secret service; FPÖ secretary general Peter Sichrovsky – a Jewish-Austrian politician and formerly one of Haider's closest aides – had gathered inside information on Haider's controversial contacts with prominent "Arab dictators".[49]

Due to Haider's perceived contacts to Holocaust deniers, the Israeli Foreign Ministry on 29 September 2008 declared it was heavily concerned about the 2008 Austrian elections;[50] a spokesman of the ministry said that Israeli officials were "very worried about the rise to power of people who promote hatred, Holocaust denial, and befriend Neo-Nazis. We see it as a disturbing development and are following the matter very closely."[51]
As far as they're concerned, Ukrainians might as well be lice. If the Germans Russians want to wipe them out, more power to them.

Maybe it's just residual Austrian longing for its most famous hometown hero - Adolf Hitler. It's reliving Germany's military exploits through Russia.

There's an amusing anecdote about how Austrians and Germans are each always trying to claim Beethoven for themselves while foisting Hitler on the other. In Austria's case, the latter might just be for show.

I can't find any stats that would allow a comparison of modern Russia to WWI Germany, but relatively recent stats put Russia's manufacturing output at below Mexico and slightly ahead of Indonesia and Brazil. We tend to think of WW2 and the mighty Russian army sending hordes of T-34's and T-85's against the invading Germans. Those Russians are gone, and so is that manufacturing capacity. Where did it go? Look at the yachts and villas of the oligarchs and siloviki.

#12  Zhang Fei has earnt a reputation here at Rantburg as a calm, fact-based thinker with areas of deep knowledge, Mr, Palmerston. I don’t always agree with him, but I always take his non-snark seriously.

ZF, with regard to Colonel Reisner — about whom I have no opinion — it seems to me that getting information only from open sources is not objectionable when deeper insight and understanding are applied, as we try to do here at [OSINT aggregator] Rantburg. That the gentleman’s track record of predictions is less than stellar does, however, merit future skepticism, along with all the other reports coming out of or about that part of the world.

Fog of war and smog of propaganda both wreathe thick in the air there. I only hope a year or two after the final documents are signed the air will clear enough to see what actually happened.

#13  /\ Difficult to analyze remotely via Open Source (OS) reporting. Somewhere, someone is monitoring a 'Common Operating Picture (COP) of the battlespace.

It's a tactical chess game. Commanders must continually (24x7) monitor events and movements in order to anticipate enemy intent and development Course of Action (COA) to defeat that intent.

Actions on the ground generally take place entirely to fast for Open Source reporting to track and report events which might enable the exploitation of tactical opportunities.

OS certainly has a role, but other real-time intelligence collection and monitoring "All Source" platforms (SIGINT, HUMINT, IMAGERY, etc) must be utilized to achieve success.

"All Source" (as opposed to single source) reporting enables the fusion and validation of intelligence data which provides for an accurate COP.

I thought this was a place for native English speakers.

The Russian Federation is focused on strengthening defense positions along the southern direction due to recent successful counterattacks by Ukrainian troops along the Kherson-Mykolaiv region border. And the successful counterattacks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Zaporozhye region are forcing Russian troops to send reinforcements to this weakened sector of the front line.

Russian troops are likely to carry out false-flag artillery attacks on Russian-controlled territory to dampen Ukrainian sentiment, encourage mobilization, and build local hostility towards the UAF. As for the "trials" in the "DPR" against the defenders of Mariupol, the Russian authorities are likely to use them to strengthen control over the occupied territories and further demoralize the Ukrainian defenders, and will also promote the Kremlin's propaganda about the invasion of Ukraine in order to " denazification".

Russian emails appear to show ‘network' holding $4.5bn assets linked to Putin
[The Guardian] Palaces, yachts and vineyards reportedly provided to Vladimir Putin by friends and oligarchs can now be linked to what appears to be an informal network holding assets worth more than $4.5bn (£3.7bn).

A digital paper trail appears to suggest that an array of holiday homes and other assets reportedly used by the Russian president, which according to available records belong to or have been owned by separate individuals, companies and charities, are linked through a common email domain name, LLCInvest.ru.

#1  That seems a tad light. Here's a different estimate:
$200 Billion Dollar Blackmail
The $200 billion figure was estimated by financier Bill Browder who, in a testimony to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee in 2017, said that Putin amassed most of his wealth after a Moscow court jailed oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky in 2003 for fraud and tax evasion:

"After Khodorkovsky's conviction, the other oligarchs went to Putin and asked him what they needed to do to avoid sitting in the same cage as Khodorkovsky. From what followed, it appeared that Putin's answer was, "50%" He wasn't saying 50% for the Russian government or the presidential administration of Russia, but 50% for Vladimir Putin personally."

On top of all this, the famous Panama Papers revealed a network of secret offshore deals and loans worth $2 billion pointing to Putin in 2016.

Geneva Convention does not apply to American mercenaries - Peskov
Direct Translation via Google Translate. Edited.
[REGNUM] Captured American mercenaries who fought in the ranks of the Ukrainian Nazis are not subject to the Geneva Convention, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with MSNBC.

He stressed that the mercenaries were involved in the shelling of the Russian military and at the same time are not considered Ukrainian army servicemen.

"They are soldiers of fortune and have been involved in illegal activities on the territory of Ukraine. They participated in the shelling of our military. They threatened their lives and must be held accountable... for the crimes they committed," Peskov said.

"I would not go into explaining the legal side of their captivity. One thing is clear - they committed crimes. They are not members of the Ukrainian army. The Geneva Convention does not apply to them," he explained.

Lisichansky cauldron for Ukrainian Forces brewing according to the recipe of the Second Chechen campaign
Direct Translation via Google Translate Edited.
[REGNUM] The Ukrainian gauleiter of the Luhansk region Sergei Gaidai decided that almost a general offensive of the Russian army had begun on the remnants of the territory entrusted to him by Kiev.

In particular, on June 20, he published a message in which he stated that a "huge amount" of equipment, artillery and aviation fell directly on all the points of deployment of Ukrainian militants, especially on the Lisichansk-Bakhmut highway, which was called Artyomovsk before the Ukrainian renaming.

It is unlikely that this powerful Ukrainian leader is able to adequately assess the scale of military measures and the direction of strikes. However, the grain of reality in his messy messages can be seen.

It is immediately clear that Gaidai is most worried about the Lisichansk-Bakhmut highway, the main supply artery of the Lisichansk-Severodonetsk group of the hardened military.

Recall that this route has been in the zone of confident destruction of Russian artillery for several days. At the same time, Ukrainian military leaders continue to drive along it to Severodonetsk new detachments of militants of various qualities, as well as ammunition and weapons.

At first glance, this is a strange circumstance. It can be assumed that the Russian command does not intend to risk unnecessary losses in the course of a decisive cutting-off strike. You can fantasize in the hysterical style of “everything is sold” / “leaked” / “agreement” and the like.

And we can recall the relatively recent events in the North Caucasus, in particular the operation in the village of Komsomolskoye, where a group of several large militant groups was surrounded and almost completely destroyed.

The gang of Ruslan Gelaev , surrounded in the village, put up strong resistance and asked colleagues to come and take part in the future victory. Colleagues were walking, but corridors were “arranged” for them in one direction. They broke through into the village relatively easily, but they could no longer get out of it.

Therefore, it is possible that the Severodonetsk-Lysichansky “cauldron” for the Ukrainians is brewed according to the “Caucasian recipe”. And the corridor Bakhmut-Lysichansk works only for the entrance.

One thing is clear already now - the history of the "Zhroynyh forces of Ukraine" will soon be replenished with another environment. And it's unlikely to be the last.

#1  If this is done according to the Chechen recipe, it will likely have to be tweaked. The Chechens were fighting the Russians with ATGMs and RPG's. The Ukrainians are outgunned, but they do have limited amounts of artillery. And tanks. And fighter jets. And drones. Not to mention an agonizing slow trickle of Western resupply.

The Russians invaded Chechnya with 80,000 men. They fought maybe 8,000 Chechens, and claim losses of about 7,500. In Ukraine, they are literally fighting hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians. I don't envy the Russian armor and infantry. Even if they gain ground, it is likely to be at a very high expense.

India Tells Oil Companies to Load Up on Discounted Russian Crude
Purchases by state-owned companies could limit the pain for Moscow from Western sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine

By Anna Hirtenstein and Benoit Faucon

The Indian government has asked state oil companies to scoop up huge volumes of cheap crude from Russia, according to industry executives, strengthening commercial ties with the country even as the West tightens sanctions on Moscow.

#15  Too funny. "Boomerangs" 🤣

New York Times:

Western Move to Choke Russia’s Oil Exports Boomerangs

With China and India buying the Russian oil shunned by the West in an effort to force an end to the Ukraine invasion, Moscow is earning more now than it did before the war.

SEOUL — When the United States and European Union moved to curtail purchases of Russian fossil fuels this year, they hoped it would help make the Russian invasion of Ukraine so economically painful for Moscow that President Vladimir V. Putin would be forced to abandon it.

That prospect now seems remote at best.

China and India, the world’s most populous countries, have swooped in to buy roughly the same volume of Russian oil that would have gone to the West. Oil prices are so high that Russia is making even more money now from sales than it did before the war began four months ago. And its once-flailing currency has surged in value against the dollar.

Russian officials are smirking over what they are calling a spectacular failure to cow Mr. Putin. And the economic pain the oil boycott was meant to inflict is reverberating not so much in Moscow but in the West, especially the United States, where skyrocketing oil prices pose a potent threat to President Biden less than halfway into his term.

#16  In May, China’s imports of Russian oil rose 28 percent from the previous month, hitting a record high and helping Russia overtake Saudi Arabia as China’s largest supplier, according to Chinese statistics.

India, which once purchased little Russian oil, is now bringing in more than 760,000 barrels a day, according to shipping data analyzed by Kpler, a market research firm.

“Asia has saved Russian crude production,” said Viktor Katona, an analyst at Kpler. “Russia, instead of falling further, is almost close to its prepandemic levels.”

#17  “Russia, instead of falling further, is almost close to its prepandemic levels.”

The fact that Russia is making less money than she might per barrel is being made up in volume, yes? And of course, each barrel Russia sells helps keep the price lower for everyone else. Are those reselling Russian oil charging Saudi prices or something between Saudi and Russian? If the latter, surely they, too, are helping keep a lid on prices for those not buying oil from Russia.

#19  And of course, each barrel Russia sells helps keep the price lower for everyone else.

Wrong. You completely missed what's going on.

The price is dramatically - $40 lower, even - for only CHINA and INDIA. They're paying around $80/bbl.

The Indian companies turn around and sell a large portion of that oil to the poor suckers in America and Europe - for $120 per barrel.

The price is ruinously high for the US, and for the couple dozen or so countries that are trying to punish Russia by signing on to America's unbelievably foolish, completely hollow sanctions.

Americans and Europeans are getting fucked in the arse -- by their own leaders. Truly unbelievable.

Russian economy will return to 2021 levels in a decade
[Moscow Times] The Russian economy will return to 2021 levels in a decade unless the country takes reform measures amid unprecedented Western sanctions over Russia’s war in Ukraine, the head of the country’s largest lender Sberbank said Friday.

"If nothing is done in the current situation, then... the return of Russia’s economy to the level of 2021 could take about 10 years," Sberbank CEO Herman Gref said.
Gref’s comments came a day after the Russian Central Bank chairwoman dampened hopes for a foreseeable return to pre-invasion indicators.

"External conditions have changed for a long time indeed, if not forever," Central Bank Governor Elvira Nabiullina said at a SPIEF event Thursday. "It’s obvious to everyone that it won’t be as it was before."

Gref said 56% of Russian exports and 51% of imports accounted for countries that have imposed sanctions against the country.

"This is a threat to 15% of the country’s GDP."

When it immediately began cracking and settling (and the painted centerline disappeared)another firm got the contract to patch the cracks and load test the rest. A third firm was contracted to tear it all up again, repack, tar and chip it again. Now 3 years later the new surface is holding but getting travel grooves.

#12  So three years and several expensive contractors later you’re not even back to where you started, so the system is working as designed.

Did Oil Peak on June 9
[TradingEconomics] WTI crude futures fluctuated around $109 per barrel on Monday, remaining close to their lowest in nearly five weeks
[hit $123/bar on June 9]
as concerns about slowing global economic growth and fuel demand more than offset expectations of higher near-term consumption and ongoing supply issues. The US oil benchmark tumbled almost 7% just on Friday as worries about the economic fallout from higher interest rates rattled financial markets. Last week, the Federal Reserve led a global wave of monetary tightening by raising its benchmark rate by 75 basis points to combat surging inflation, stoking fears of a possible recession. Meanwhile, US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm warned of a continued upward pull on demand over the weekend, and the likelihood of sustained high gasoline prices. Ongoing supply disruptions caused by the war in Ukraine and unrest in Libya, as well as OPEC's failure to pump more oil also continued to support crude prices.
All the futures have also declined since June 9, e.g., Dec 2022 WTI is at about $100/bar. It would be at least $10/bar lower except that storage of both gasoline and crude is running about 10% less than average.

#1  ...Prices here have dropped about 15-20 cents a gallon, and in other parts of town they're headed back under $4. I fear, however, that we may find but temporary solace before something else smacks us in the head.

#6  Oil company stocks have been falling faster than the overall market recently; investors seem to think prices have peaked, probably because demand has peaked as the recession begins.
Posted by: Glenmore || 06/21/2022 9:55 Comments || Top||

#7  Well, until they decide to actually start treating us in the industry as human instead of subscribing to the power-mad-dictator-of-the-month-club, I don't think oil will finish peaking.

I don't think they'll be able to "recession" their way out of massive oil and commodity price increases. The economy will shrink faster than they can shrink the money supply.

Israel-Palestine-Jordan
With funding from Chinese backer, 162 Ethiopian immigrants arrive in Israel
[IsraelTimes] 6th flight of Operation ’Tzur Yisrael’ arrives with financial support from entrepreneur and Keren Hayesod; minister hails ’the return of our sons and daughters home to Israel’

Dozens of new immigrants from Ethiopia stepped into the brisk early morning winter air at Ben Gurion airport on Friday to start their new lives as Israeli citizens. Clutching Israeli flags, some passengers knelt to kiss the ground after they descended the stairs from the plane.

The Ethiopian Airlines plane carrying 162 passengers was the sixth flight in Operation Tzur Yisrael, which aims to bring 2,000 Ethiopians from the Falash Mura community waiting in camps to Israel in the coming months.

The planned ceremony to greet the immigrants was scrapped in light of Israel’s coronavirus restrictions.

The flight was funded by Keren Hayesod — United Israel Appeal, which serves as the official fundraising body for Israel. It was financially supported by Peter Wang, a Christian Chinese entrepreneur.

"The fact that dozens of new Olim will celebrate this Shabbat on the land of Israel fills me with feelings of pride and satisfaction," said Ethiopian-born Absorption and Immigration Minister Pnina Tamano-Shata in a statement. "Today, a long and taxing journey of waiting to be reunited with their families is over, and I am happy to lead the return of our sons and daughters home to Israel."

Look at those happy people coming down the steps. Finally, a story everyone can feel good about. Badly needed in these trying times.
Wang, the Chinese businessman who supported the flight financially, told The Times of Israel that his support for aliyah (immigration to Israel) comes from his deep Christian faith.

"’Even if you have been banished to the most distant land under the heavens, from there the Lord your God will gather you and bring you back,’" said Wang, quoting Deuteronomy.

"Jewish brothers and sisters in Ethiopia have been praying to return to the land of their ancestors for centuries," Wang continued, citing his concern over the precarious situation in which they find themselves. "I believe God has heard their cries out of distress and seen their longing for the promised land."

Grundwerg told The Times of Israel that there has been especially significant support from evangelical Christians around the world over the past decade.

"We’ve had Christians who supported aliyah from the former Soviet Union, from Ukraine, even from Mexico," said Grundwerg. "But there is something special that many Christians connect to with Ethiopian aliyah."

Grundwerg estimated the cost of the flight at around $320,000. Some of that went on preparations for the flight, including pandemic-related health precautions and other vaccinations.

Most of the funding from the Israeli government goes toward long-term costs, like housing and vocational training, leaving other Israeli and Zionist institutions to support the remainder of the preparatory costs as well as the flights themselves.

While Ethiopian Jewish immigrants from the Beta Israel community are recognized as fully Jewish, immigrants from Ethiopia belonging to the smaller Falash Mura community are required to undergo Orthodox conversion after immigrating.
Required? Buh?
The Falash Mura are Christian, and have been for generations.

10 Best Cancer Killing Phytonutrients To Eat
[Seabreeze Family Farm] A new medical model is fast emerging in line with ancient wisdom: one that aims to strike to the root cause of disease and resolve it permanently, and which some call "functional medicine." In cancer treatment, this highly rational approach involves targeting the cancer stem cells (CSCs) at the root of cancer malignancy. Because we now know that CSCs are resistant to chemotherapy and radiation treatment, and may even increase in number and invasveness when exposed to these outdated therapies, it is no longer ethical to continue with the conventional oncologist’s "standard of care." Clearly, unless a cancer treatment is capable of selectively killing and/or inducing suicide programs (apoptosis) within cancer cells without harming non-cancerous cells, it is not going to produce a cure.

In light of this, we are excited to report on a new review published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences titled, "Phytochemicals as Innovative Therapeutic Tools against Cancer Stem Cells," which evaluated the evidence for what natural compounds within various foods and spices make for the most compelling treatments for targeting CSCs.

#6  Any solution of messing with sunlight is insane. CO2 is NOT a problem. 400ppm is BAD! We really should be at around 1200ppm. We are still technically in CO2 starvation. Keep in mind at below 150 ppm, ALL plant dies and so do we. Idiots in Hollywood always show earth after gerbil worming as a desert when they should be showing a JUNGLE.

The reason why the little ice age was so bad was the loss of FOOD PRODUCTION. NO sunlight, NO Food. Any attempt at blocking sunlight could have DIRE and HORRIBLE consequences.

But, nothing unusual is actually occurring. Over the past forty years, the global tropospheric temperature has increased on average 0.13C per decade. Over a century, if continued, that would be 1.3C. There is no sign of acceleration.
