One person was killed and four others were critically wounded in the afternoon shooting at Geneva Presbyterian Church in the city of Laguna Woods, Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials said.
The suspect in the shooting, an Asian man in his 60s, was in custody and deputies recovered two handguns at the scene, Undersheriff Jeff Hallock said. A motive for the shooting wasn’t immediately known but investigators don’t believe the gunman lives in the community, Hallock said.

[FoxNews] Three Wisconsin boys are facing sexual harassment charges from their middle school over accusations that they used incorrect gender pronouns on a fellow student.
"I received a phone call from the principal over at the elementary school, forewarning me; letting me know that I was going to be receiving an email with sexual harassment allegations against my son," Rosemary Rabidoux, a parent of one of the accused, told Fox 11 News last week.
"I immediately went into shock. I’m thinking, sexual harassment? That’s rape, that’s inappropriate touching, that’s incest" Rabidoux continued. "What has my son done?"
But none of the concerns Rabidoux had were at issue. Instead, her 13-year-old son, Braden, was accused of using incorrect pronouns to address another student at Kiel Middle School.
"(The investigating principal) said he’s being allegedly charged with sexual harassment for not using proper pronouns," Rabidoux said. "I thought it wasn’t real. I thought this has got to be a gag, a joke – one has nothing to do with the other."
Now her son and two other boys are being charged by school officials with Title IV violations, which prohibits gender-based harassment.
The incident in question reportedly took place in March, when a student announced a preference of "they" and "them" to identify them.
But Rabidoux said her son was merely sticking up for one of his friends.
"She had been screaming at one of Braden’s friends to use proper pronouns, calling him profanity, and this friend is very soft-spoken, and kind of just sunk down into his chair," Rabidoux said. "Braden finally came up, defending him, saying ‘He doesn’t have to use proper pronouns, it’s his constitutional right to not use, you can’t make him say things.’"
The mother told ABC 2 News that the new pronoun preference also caused confusion for her son, with her instructing him to just address the student by their name instead.
"It’s plural. It doesn’t make sense to him. I said so, I told him to call them by their names." Rabidoux said.
Now the parents are calling on the charges to be dismissed through an attorney with the Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty.
"It’s not sexual harassment under Title IX, under their own policy, under federal law, and it’s probably a First Amendment violation. Almost certainly, if that’s their theory, that solely using the wrong pronoun, that that would be a First Amendment violation," said Luke Berg, the attorney representing the boys.

[NYPost] The Cambodian government is urging sexed-up citizens to stop playing with phallic-shaped flowers known as Nepenthes holdenii — saying the erotic-looking plants are at risk of extinction.

But for the results to favour a spirited opposition, it took politicians three rounds of voting to determine the outright winner. All 36 candidates invested massively in all campaign platforms including defending their agenda before citizens and even on social media platforms.
During the first round, Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni, a fierce critic of Farmajo, beat all candidates after garnering 65 votes. He was closely followed by Farmajo [59], Hassan Sheikh Mohamud [52], and former Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire [47].
Another former President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed scored 39 votes contrary to the expectations of his supporters while opposition leader Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame managed only 15. Abdulkadir Osoble scored 12 while Addow Ali Gees managed 8 of the 328 MPs who voted.
The scenario slightly changed in the second round of voting after Hassan Sheikh Mohamud scored 110 votes to Mohammed Abdullahi Farmajo's 83 votes.
Said Abdullahi Deni scooped 68 while Hassan Ali Khaire managed 63, pushing the race to the third round where a simple majority between two frontrunners was to determine the winner.
In the third round, opposition bigwigs led by Said Abdullahi Deni and Hassan Ali Khaire, a former PM who fell out with Farmajo, ganged up to Mohamud's advantage, sealing a historic victory. Hassan Sheikh becomes the first Somalia president to be re-elected having served from 2012-to 2017.
The third round saw Hassan Sheikh Mohamud score 214 votes to Farmajo's 110 votes, sending Mogadishu into a celebratory mood. Farmajo's term expired last year in February but has been in office after stakeholders failed to steer elections in time.
Before clinching victory in the election, Hassan Sheikh took to his Facebook to rally politicians to consider supporting him in the third round. He said: "Please vote for me so that we can complete the journey of the process of building our nation together. Our country needs an inclusive government."
Similarly, Farmajo also asked politicians to consider him for the second term, noting that it will enable him "to promote the continuity of change in our Republic for the next years and fulfil my vision for our beloved motherland".
With Somalia walking up on Monday morning by starting to usher in a new administration, the outcome was expected given Farmajo's style of leadership which had even attracted criticism from his own Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble.
In a previous post, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who has been consistent with his criticism against Farmajo, maintained that should he get elected, he will ensure political freedoms are adhered to in the country. Under Farmajo's administration, Villa Somalia has often been accused of using security forces to muzzle freedoms of speech and association.
"Restricting, shrinking and or closing the freedom and the political spaces incorporated with a fear among our people was part and parcel of the current regimes political," he said in a previous post while condemning death threats directed at Hodan Ali, a political and security pundit.
Mohamud inherits a deeply divided country that is struggling with an economic downturn, al-Shabaab ...... al-Qaeda's tentacle in East Africa... threat, drought, the resurgence of clan militia, and weakened foreign policy. Despite his defeat to Farmajo in 2017, he reinvented himself by defending human rights in Somalia.
The result effectively ends the electioneering period which was marred with endless political squabbles. The main hero of the process is Prime Minister Mohammed Hussein Roble, who stood firm to ensure the process was credible despite resistance from Villa Somalia.

I remember when entering the service in the very early 70s we were required to sign numerous papers. Among which declared that you were neither now nor before members or affiliated with certain groups. One of those groups was the Abraham Lincoln brigade, which was an American volunteer unit in the Spanish Civil War. Wonder how long it will take the Swamp to add this one to the list too.

@P2K it is interesting what groups they add. For instance if you were part of the Foreign volunteer units in France during WWI or the flying Tigers in WW2, not an issue.

The Russians have so, so, so many tanks and armored vehicles to continue to toss at Ukraine, whereas Kyiv is reliant on the goodwill of the United States and its European partners to keep them afloat.

This should not be a surprise to anyone who has studied modern Russian history. Everything that has been done in Ukraine was done by Russian forces during WWII, during the various "revolutions" in Russia prior to the establishment of the Soviet Union, and in response to the Hungarian and Czech uprisings (and others less-well-known elsewhere in the Russian empire).

Speaking at an emergency politburo meeting on Sunday, Kim Jong-un issued an order "on immediately stabilizing the supply of medicines in Pyongyang City by involving the powerful forces of the military medical field of the People's Army," according to the state-run KCNA.
It is unclear how exactly the military will be involved in the nationwide effort to halt the spread of the mysterious "fever," but Kim specifically emphasized the need "to correct the vulnerable points in medicine supply system and take strong measures for transporting medicines."
The order comes after Kim complained that the drugs released from the state stockpiles "have not been supplied to inhabitants through pharmacies correctly in time." He accused civilian officials in charge of the epidemic response of "not properly recognizing the present crisis but only talking about the spirit of devotedly serving the people."
North Korea has been battling an "explosive" spread of the disease since late April, with a "maximum emergency quarantine system" and strict lockdowns introduced nationwide last week. Authorities have confirmed that at least one patient died carrying the Covid-19 Omicron variant, but without mass testing and vaccination programs they have stopped short of attributing any other cases to the virus behind the global pandemic.

[IRAQSUN] President Rodrigo Chaves, who was sworn in as president on May 8, has declared a state of emergency in Costa Rica following a month of ransomware computer attacks.Chaves, who said Costa Rica is suffering at the hands of "cybercriminals" and "cyberterrorists", has yet to name the members of the National Emergency Commission.
The attacks began in April when the Finance Ministry reported that a number of its systems were affected, including tax collections and customs. Attacks also targeted the social security agency's human resources system and Labor Ministry.
Some systems, especially at the Finance Ministry, still are not functioning normally.

[Breitbart] A Walmart customer service representative confirmed to this Breitbart News reporter that an order of Enfamil brand infant formula was shipped out of Cheyenne, Wyoming, to North Bergen, New Jersey, “due to the unavailability of the item at the nearest fulfillment center in your area.”
Cheyenne is 1,738 miles from North Bergen. Walmart operates a “supercenter” storefront in North Bergen.
The Enfamil purchase, made on May 8 and arriving on May 12, was made for the purpose of feeding an eight-month-old infant, not in the interest of journalism.
The Enfamil powder is already a substitution for the Similac brand powdered formula typically consumed.
Walmart’s media relations wing did not respond to multiple requests for clarification as to the reasons behind the baby formula order requiring a cross-country shipment, how common such a move is for online orders, and confirmation that the order means the closest available Enfamil for parents in New Jersey is in Wyoming. A customer service representative did offer an explanation regarding the order.
“The reason why it was sent in from a different location is due to the unavailability of the item,” the representative said. “Due to the unavailability of the item in the nearest fulfillment center in your area, we have to request the item from other fulfillment center. [sic]”
The FDA added in the press release that “other infant formula manufacturers are meeting or exceeding capacity levels to meet current demand. Notably, more infant formula was purchased in the month of April than in the month prior to the recall.”
“Your order was unavailable because the item is currently out of stock due to its popularity,” the representative responded when asked if it was fair to conclude that the shipment details meant that the closest Walmart fulfillment center carrying Enfamil from New Jersey is in Wyoming.
At press time, the Walmart website shows none of the five Walmart “supercenters” within a ten-mile radius its North Bergen store are carrying the product.
The formula purchase’s transcontinental journey reflects the gravity of the growing crisis surrounding acute shortages families are currently facing of nearly every widely available brand of baby formula. As of last week, over 40 percent of baby formula stock is out on a national level.
While supply chain disruptions partially caused by lockdowns in response to the Chinese coronavirus pandemic had already strained national baby formula supplies, the shortages became more severe in light of the federal government shutting down one of the largest formula manufacturing plants in the country.
Several Similac lines and other brands produced by Abbott Labs have all but disappeared off of store shelves nationwide after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shut down Abbott’s Michigan processing facility in late March in response to an alleged bacterial outbreak; Abbott had issued a voluntary recall of some of the products affected in February. Abbott is America’s largest baby formula producer.
Mounting public concern regarding baby formula shortages led the FDA to announce on Wednesday that it would finally cede to Abbott’s request to begin to use the plant to make formula again, but only on a “case-by-case” basis.
“We recognize that many consumers have been unable to access infant formula and critical medical foods they are accustomed to using and are frustrated by their inability to do so,” FDA Commissioner Robert Califf said in a public statement on Tuesday. “We are doing everything in our power to ensure there is adequate product available where and when they need it.”
The FDA added in the press release that “other infant formula manufacturers are meeting or exceeding capacity levels to meet current demand. Notably, more infant formula was purchased in the month of April than in the month prior to the recall.”

One thing I have noticed about these shortages, is they always seem to be happening around the major blue cities. We have had some holes in the shelf stocks in Colorado, but nothing compared to Covid panic and what I am seeing elsewhere.

[JustTheNews] The scientific publisher Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) retracted 349 Chinese-affiliated research papers after questioning the peer-review process, according to research journal watchdog Retraction Watch.
China is frequently implicated in research-related scandals such as sending scientists to the United States, tapping American professors for information and hiding evidence about the COVID-19 pandemic.
ACM pinpointed the issue to a company in China that organized a conference and was in charge of peer review, Retraction Watch reported.
The company became aware of the issue when a tipster told ACM two versions of a Jakarta conference were reported on the same dates in the same venue with many overlapping authors.
One of the Chinese company's workers told ACM that "the paper was peer-reviewed and after multiple requests, [the company] sent a PDF of the alleged review, which appeared itself to have been falsified, based on the metadata in the PDF sent to ACM," Scott Delman, ACM's director of publications, told Retraction Watch.
After a multi-month investigation where none of the 26 studies' authors responded, Delman said ACM determined it "couldn’t trust the integrity of the peer review process for this event and was compelled to retract all of the papers published from the conference."
ACM was aware of the issue following the ICIMTech conference several months later, the company found similarities between those papers and the papers at the other conference. ACM went on to retract 323 more papers.
The conference companies are "supposed to adhere to our policies and standards, but we don’t run peer review for them," Delman said.
"Paper mills seem to have seen an opportunity to find a loophole," he added, referring to fake-paper factories.
