Man in custody accused of raping and shooting 12-year-old boy in Miami-Dade
[LOCAL10] Miami-Dade police have announced the arrest of a man in connection with the abduction, assault and shooting of a 12-year-old boy over the weekend.

He was identified Tuesday as 43-year-old Aliex Santiesteban.

Santiesteban faces charges of sexual battery with a deadly weapon/serious injury, kidnapping a child under 13 and attempted murder.

The boy was sexually assaulted and shot. He was temporarily blinded after a bullet struck him in the jaw and went out through the other side of his head, authorities said Monday.

“As the father of a 12-year-old myself, this is extremely disturbing and it hits you at the soul,” said Miami-Dade Police Director Alfredo Ramirez.

The victim still in a lot of pain as he continues to recover at Jackson Memorial Hospital, with authorities saying he likely has a long recovery ahead.

The boy’s life was likely saved by a good Samaritan, who police called a hero, and doctors say that if the bullet went a millimeter in either direction, he’d be dead.

Pharrell's cousin killed by police amid Virginia Beach mass shooting chaos
[NYPOST] The man who was rubbed out by police during a Friday night melee in Virginia Beach was a cousin of Pharrell Williams, the musician said.
Who?
Donovon Lynch, of Virginia Beach, 25, was shot and killed by a uniformed police officer a block away from a shooting that injured eight people.

Police said Lynch was armed and may have been part of the original fight.

Pharrell, who is a Virginia Beach native, tweeted the news Monday.

"The loss of these lives is a tragedy beyond measure. My cousin Donovon was killed during the shootings," the 13-time Grammy-winning singer, songwriter and producer tweeted.

"It is critical my family and the other victims’ families get the transparency they deserve. VA Beach is the epitome of hope and we will get through this," the post continued.

Massachusetts mom allegedly beaten to death with rock by son's father
[NYPOST] A Massachusetts man has been charged with fatally beating the mother of his young son, bashing her in the head with a rock during a stroll on a Maine beach, court records show.

Jeffrey Buchannan, 33, of Bedford, was taken into custody Friday on a murder charge following the gruesome slaying of Rhonda Pattelena, 35, at Short Sands Beach in York, Maine, state police said.

Buchannan, the father of one of Pattelena’s three sons, told cops he did not remember the killing, according to a court affidavit obtained by the Bangor Daily News.

Buchannan told police he saw a man running toward him while Pattelena made hand gestures behind his back as they were at the beach. Feeling threatened, Buchannan said he "blacked out" and then remembered only walking away from the Bedford woman, according to the affidavit.
Sounds Legit
Firefighters later found Pattelena dead on the beach, where she had "significant trauma" to her face and head. Blood was also found on the sand beneath her head, the affidavit states.

G. Gordon Liddy, known for role in Watergate scandal, dead at age of 90
[Just The News] G. Gordon Liddy, known for his role in the Watergate scandal, died on Tuesday at his daughter's house in Virginia at the age of 90-years-old.

According to the Washington Post, while the man's son Thomas P. Liddy confirmed his father's passing, he did not provide a cause of death but did note that it was not connected to coronavirus.

Liddy was "the undercover operative whose bungling of the Watergate break-in triggered one of the gravest constitutional crises in American history and led to the resignation of President Richard M. Nixon," according to the outlet.

#5  I stumbled upon his book Will as a teenager at a used bookstore. Enjoyed it and then stumbled upon his radio show which was entertaining as well. He also wrote a book entitled When I Was Young This Was A Free Country or something akin to that. Perhaps it should be reissued now as a reminder of how far our freedoms have been eroded and attacked. He led an interesting life and I remember him saying (paraphrase) "I did not want simply to endure, but to prevail." His post-Watergate and post-prison life bore that out. RIP.

Chef Ann Kim's Fried Green Tomatoes
[G&G] At the Garden & Gun Club in Atlanta, chef Ann Kim has given many of the South’s most quintessential dishes—country fried pork chops and shrimp and grits among them—her own spin. So, Kim says, it was only natural that a fried green tomato recipe made its way onto the Club’s latest menu. Plus, she says, "It helps that green tomatoes are basically available all year-round." While the restaurant’s version comes topped with jumbo lump crab salad, Kim encourages home chefs to first master the dish’s main components: the crispy fried base and the smoky, mayo-based dipping sauce.

To give the green tomatoes a rich flavor and maximum crunch, Kim uses a buttermilk dredge and a cornmeal coating. "Southern cooks know that cornmeal makes things super crispy, but it works especially well with tomatoes since they have a higher water content," she says. As for that dipping sauce? "I’ve always found that the best sauces start with Duke’s mayo. Mine calls for smoked tomatoes, but as long as you start with Duke’s, you could really throw anything in the bowl and it’ll come out tasting delicious." For those short on time, Kim says you can sidestep smoking the tomatoes by adding a few drops of liquid smoke, available at the grocery store, to the mixture instead.

3 Workers of Polio Vaccination Campaign Killed in Nangarhar
[ToloNews] Three women working for the polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set. Currently the disease is only found in Pakistain and Afghanistain...

One of the incidents happened at around 11:30 am local time in Majboor Abad area Jalalabad’s district 4 in which unidentified button men killed a woman worker of polio vaccination campion.

In another similar incident less than one hour after the first attack, unidentified button men killed two other female workers of the campaign in Lal Qasim Agha area in Jalalabad’s PD7, sources said.

According to hospital officials, the workers named Basira, Samina and Negina.

Local officials have not commented on the incidents.

No group has grabbed credit for the attacks.

This comes as the current year’s first polio vaccination campaign started on Monday.

Officials said that Afghanistan ranks nearly at the top globally of reported poliovirus cases in the past nine years, second only to Pakistain.

UNICEF officials said that 56 new cases of poliovirus were reported in Afghanistan in 2020.

According to UNICEF, 2020 was a bad year for Afghanistan since 2011 in which 56 new cases of poliovirus were reported.

The campaign is expected to cover 9.6 million children under five years of age in the country.

Acting Minister of Public Health Waheed Majroh called on religious scholars, tribal elders and warring sides to pave the way for polio vaccination countrywide.

According to figures, 310 cases of a new type of poliovirus were reported in the country since last March.

So far this year, 23 new cases of polio have been reported in the country.

Arabia
Saudi private sector to invest $1.3 trillion in diversification by 2030: Crown Prince
If only you had an Abraham Accord with Israel, O Saudi princes, they could openly give you a hand with this great and necessary work.
[AlAhram] Soddy Arabia
...a kingdom taking up the bulk of the Arabian peninsula. Its primary economic activity involves exporting oil and soaking Islamic rubes on the annual hajj pilgrimage. The country supports a large number of princes in whatcha might call princely splendor. When the oil runs out the rest of the world is going to kick sand in the Soddy national face...
's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman
...Crown Prince and modernizer of Saudi Arabia as of 2016. The Turks hate him, so he must be all right, despite the occasional brutal murder of Qatar-owned journalists...
said on Tuesday the local private sector will invest 5 trillion riyals ($1.3 trillion) between now and 2030 under a new programme to help diversify the economy.

The move aims to mobilise the Gulf Arab state's private sector to help wean the economy off its reliance on oil exports, which still account for more than half the state's income, and develop new sectors to help create jobs for millions of Saudis.

The private sector investment is part of 12 trillion riyals worth of investments in the economy planned by 2030, Prince Mohammed said in televised remarks.

That also includes 3 trillion riyals from the Public Investment Fund (PIF), and 4 trillion riyals as part of a new Saudi investment strategy.

"The new Shareek (Partner) programme will help the private sector create hundreds of thousands of new jobs and will boost the contribution of the private sector to GDP by up to 65% by the end of the decade," the prince said.

Finance Minister Mohammed al-Jadaan told Rooters that 24 companies, the majority listed firms, would invest 2 trillion riyals by 2025 and another 3 trillion riyals by 2030. PIF is a shareholder in most of them, he added.

Jadaan said the government would offer support through regulatory reforms, tax incentives at free trade zones depending on the sector, soft loans from Saudi development institutions, and technology support, including for research and development.

Home prices saw largest annual gain in nearly 15 years
[AXIOS] Home prices saw the biggest annual gain in close to 15 years this January, according to the Case-Shiller index.

The big picture: Phoenix, Seattle and San Diego saw the highest year-over-year home price gains.

Background:

Little supply: There were just over 1 million homes for sale at the end of January — the fewest since 1982, the WSJ notes.

Low (but rising) mortgage rates: The average 30-year mortgage rate hit a record low (2.67%) the week of Jan. 7.
Yes, but: Rates are currently at 3.17%, contributing to the slowdown in mortgage applications.

Bonus: Consumer confidence is the highest since the pandemic started last March, per new Conference Board data out today.

Consumer "plans to purchase a home" are the highest since the survey's inception in 1967.

Science & Technology
Stopping gene-regulating activity of signaling molecule could aid heart failure prevention
[MedPress] The human heart works under high demand, constantly pumping oxygen-rich blood through the body. When faced with disease, however, fulfilling this demand can become increasingly difficult and harmful. In the case of chronic high blood pressure—a leading cardiovascular disease in the United States—the heart continuously overexerts, resulting in maladaptive growth and, ultimately, severe dysfunction of the heart muscle itself.

Maladaptive growth of the heart, known as cardiac hypertrophy, is brought about in part by activation of G protein-coupled kinase 5 (GRK5), a signaling molecule found within heart cells that previously has been linked to worsened cardiac function in heart failure. Researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University (LKSOM) now show for the first time in animals that keeping GRK5 out of the heart cell nucleus, the compartment that houses the cell's genes, can block this abnormal growth process.

The new findings, published online March 30 in the journal Science Signaling, open exciting avenues for the development of GRK5-based therapies to prevent heart failure, a disease in which the heart is no longer able to pump blood through the body. Heart failure typically develops after years of the heart compensating for the effects of high blood pressure.

"GRK5 acts as a pathological gene regulator in the heart, with its activity specifically in the heart cell nucleus being a major factor driving cardiac hypertrophy in heart failure," explained Walter J. Koch, Ph.D., W.W. Smith Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine, Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmacology, Director of the Center for Translational Medicine at LKSOM, and senior investigator on the new study.

GRK5 normally hangs out in the cell membrane. But in the heart, in response to hypertrophic stress, it translocates to the nucleus, binds to certain factors that regulate genes, and thereby triggers the production of proteins involved in tissue growth.

#1  For those who may be interested, Walter Issacson's The CODE Breakers is a fascinating 'deep dive' into this sort of research. A challenging read for those (like myself) unfamiliar with the medical research, microbiology, DNA and the like, but fascinating nonetheless.

Key take away: The current pandemic research appears to have prompted great strides in medical research and scientific discovery well beyond the 25m target of vaccine development and fielding,

Apple Watch able to monitor frailty in cardiovascular disease patients
[MedPress] A team of researchers at Stanford University has found that the Apple Watch in association with an iPhone can be used to monitor frailty in cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients. The project group, which was funded by Apple, has posted a paper describing experiments they conducted with the Apple Watc on the open-access site PLOS ONE.

People with CVD often lose physical abilities because the heart is unable to keep up with increased demands. Thus, many such patients develop frailty, which is defined in this case as an inability to walk distances greater than 300 meters in six minutes. The test has been named the six-minute walk test (6MWT) and is used as a standard means of assessing the health of CVD patients—it is generally conducted in a clinical setting. In this new effort, the team at Stanford has assessed the capabilities of an Apple Watch app they developed called VascTrac that has been designed to conduct the 6MWT on CVD patients.

The team tested the app and device by enlisting the assistance of 111 CVD patients. Each was given an iPhone and Apple Watch running the VascTrac. The volunteers were then asked to test the app by attempting to walk for six minutes—both at home and in a clinical setting.

The researchers found the system could assess the frailty of the volunteers in the clinical setting with a sensitivity of 90% and specificity of 85%. At home, the numbers were 83% and 60%. The researchers say that their 6MWT system was able to provide clinically useful information for patients regarding their health in a home environment. They also note that their system could be particularly useful during emergency situations, such as a pandemic, when many CVD patients are afraid to visit a doctor's office. They also note that their experiments were conducted over many months in 2018 and 2019. Apple has since added the VascTrac abilities to the WatchOS, which means users of new Apple Watches can take advantage of the capabilities without having to download an app.

Immune response may explain rare clots after AstraZeneca vaccine
[AlAhram] Researchers may have found an explanation for the rare but serious blood clots reported among some people who received AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine

Scientists believe the phenomenon is similar to one that rarely occurs with a blood thinning drug called heparin, called heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT).

In HIT, the drug triggers the immune system to produce antibodies that activate platelets, which cause blood to clot.

Drugs other than heparin can cause clotting disorders that strongly resemble HIT, and researchers suspect that in rare cases, the AstraZeneca vaccine may be another such trigger.

Four previously healthy individuals who got the AstraZeneca shot and developed life-threatening clots had the same kind of antibodies that activate platelets and initiate clotting in HIT, the researchers reported on Monday in a paper posted on Research Square ahead of peer review.

Twenty individuals who received the vaccine but did not develop clots did not have these antibodies.

An editorial comment posted with the study noted that drug-induced thrombocytopenia is treatable if identified promptly.

Millions of people have received the vaccine without issues.

#1  I remember that early in this whole --insert obscene reference here--, there was a paper claiming that the CCP-virus wasn't a respiratory disease, but was actually a blood disease. Having a blood disorder side effect of a vaccine makes sense in that case.

#2  It may well turn out that most of the morbidity caused by COVID-19 comes from an aberrant immune response to the virus. The very low morbidity caused by the virus in the <= 18 age groups may be due to their having the healthiest immune systems of any age group.
