-Signs, Portents, and the Weather-
Record-Breaking Cold in North Texas
[National Weather Service] A Winter Storm Warning will be in effect through 6 PM Monday evening for the entire region. Heavy mixed precipitation is expected, with 3- 6 inches of total snow accumulations with isolated higher amounts of 6-8 inches possible. Strong winds will lead to drifting and blowing snow, which as the possibility of reducing visibilities to 1 mile at times.

Temperatures will be EXTREMELY cold, with near-blizzard conditions possible. Hazardous travel is likely for several days due to icy bridges and roadways, and travel will become impossible and possibly life-threatening. Wind chills as low as -15 F for several days could induce hypothermia. Travel is highly discouraged for Monday and Tuesday. If you have to venture outside, remember to bring all the necessary tools and supplies in your car.
I think we're forecast to break the record low tomorrow by twenty degrees.

#9  I'm not cold:p It's my silly neighbors from Nigeria and other warm climes:P

My personal cold record was in Keene, North Dakota, pop 36 not counting all the roughnecks and rig crew. It was -47 F. Top that off with 70 mph winds and it was bloody cold. My work unit floor was frozen and the heaters couldn't put out enough heat to unfreeze it. When we rigged down, I had to borrow a steam line to cut through 4" of ice to get our wire runs free. Later that month, the directional hand asked me to come help him strap a motor and since it was bright and sunny, I thought medium weight insulated gloves were enough. Nope, in 15 minutes I got a light case of frostbite. Took 2 days for my hands to quit hurting.

#24  And its going to get COLDER. Like Denver Cold.

Next 24: High 9 low 4. Tmrw night overnight low -3. Snow 1-3 inches.

The biggest issue isn't the cold or snow, its that it's ongoing for nearly a week. Usually, the weather pushed through quickly after a couple of days. Last time there was this much weather was the Superbowl week back in Feb 2011, when the record low of 15 was set Feb 10.

The thing is that lows been in the teens and highs in the 20s for a couple days already, and the single digits are just about unheard of in this area ever in history (except maybe the ice age). And its not going above freezing until Friday. That will be a solid week of lows in the teens to single digits and highs below freezing, along with snow off and on. Pretty much unheard of in Dallas area. Remarkable!

China refused to give raw COVID data to WHO, team member says
[Aljazeera] Investigator tells Reuters that China provided summary data on the 174 cases identified in the early phase of the outbreak in Wuhan.

China refused to give raw data on early COVID-19 cases to a World Health Organization-led mission probing the origins of the pandemic, according to a member of the international team.

Dominic Dwyer, an Australian infectious disease expert, told the Reuters news agency on Saturday that the WHO mission had requested raw patient data on 174 cases that China had identified from the early phase of the outbreak in the city of Wuhan in December 2019, as well as other cases, but was only provided with a summary.

New Hampshire Considers Pro-Gun Constitutional Amendment
[Bearing Arms] New Hampshire’s state motto is "Live free or die." They’ve long put it on their license plates as a mark of defiance. They historically love their freedom up that way, though a huge influx of people from Massachusetts have brought their progressive politics with them, making that state more of a fight than it used to be.

However, a lot of lawmakers still believe in freedom, apparently, and they’re talking about taking a big step to make sure it stays.

Britain
U.K. Forced Do Not Resuscitate Orders on COVID Patients with Developmental Disabilities
[National Review] Oh, the joys of centralized health care. Apparently, the NHS has engaged in a bigoted DNR regime for COVID patients with developmental disabilities. From the Guardian story:
People with learning disabilities have been given do not resuscitate orders during the second wave of the pandemic, in spite of widespread condemnation of the practice last year and an urgent investigation by the care watchdog.

Mencap said it had received reports in January from people with learning disabilities that they had been told they would not be resuscitated if they were taken ill with Covid-19 . . .

DNACPRs are usually made for people who are too frail to benefit from CPR, but Mencap said some seem to have been issued for people simply because they had a learning disability. The CQC is due to publish a report on the practice within weeks.

The disclosure comes as campaigners put growing pressure on ministers to reconsider a decision not to give people with learning disabilities priority for vaccinations. There is growing evidence that even those with a mild disability are more likely to die if they contract the coronavirus.

This is eugenics thinking: pure, simple, and crass — a denial of human exceptionalism and the equal moral worth of every person. If true, heads should roll!

#2  Another odd phenom in the US health system: the bought and paid for anti-COVID-19 monoclonal antibodies released under an EUA by the FDA starting 9 Nov 2020, supposed to be given as infusions only to outpatients who are high risk for severe COVID-19 and newly diagnosed. Everyone over age 65 who turns + for COVID-19 and who doesn't need immediate hospitalization is eligible for this treatment. I know of a couple of elders in this category who were simply told by their PCP to go home and wait it out, without ever being offered a chance to receive this treatment. They then died a few days later. Even the existence of the infusion centers seems to be a secret. Last week I talked to a local nursing home's director of nursing and also a nurse practitioner about this. They both knew of the existence of the EUA but they were falsely under the impression no such centers existed within a reasonable distance of their facility. They expressed shock when I told them of 2 such facilities within 8 miles of their institution. The nurse practitioner is employed by a local hospital which runs one of the infusion centers. She wondered why her own employer had not even bothered to tell her of this. She treats several otherwise eligible elders every week.

Donors Fume: ‘It's Bullshi*' Biden Hasn't Called About Ambassadorships
[Daily Beest] They wrote massive checks. They encouraged their deepest-pocketed friends to do the same. They sat through Zoom concerts with James Taylor and Zoom roundtables hosted by Diane Lane and helped pay for an inauguration they didn’t even get to attend.

Now, some of President Joe Biden’s most generous financial backers want what’s coming to them: an ambassadorship—both extraordinary and plenipotentiary, if possible.

And they’re getting sick of waiting.

"It’s bullshit," one Democratic fundraiser vented. "The number of asks over the course of the campaign, and over the course of the transition, and let’s not even talk about the Zoom convention, and they can’t even remember to make a phone call to the people who kept the lights on."

From a practical standpoint, delays in official nominations are understandable. Nearly two-thirds of Biden’s Cabinet secretary nominations are currently stuck in the confirmation logjam caused by the impeachment trial of his predecessor, and vacant ambassadorial positions are currently being minded by the career foreign service officials who generally do the real diplomacy work anyway.

Although Biden has not made any nominations to ambassadorial posts beyond career diplomat Linda Thomas-Greenfield to the United Nations, he is still on pace with former President Barack Obama, who did not name his first ambassadorial nominee until March 2009.

But in interviews with half a dozen deep-pocketed bundlers who helped Biden’s campaign shatter fundraising records, as well as two former ambassadors, The Daily Beast found that this explanation—and the lack of any communication from the White House about whether potential nominees might want to begin preparing financial disclosures or start brushing up on their French—is wearing thin.

Our President gives his 'deepest thanks' after second acquittal
[Washington Examiner] Former President Donald Trump vowed that the United States will soon be hearing more from him after he was acquitted on one impeachment article.

The Senate voted 57-43 in favor of convicting Trump for inciting an insurrection, although the vote total did not reach the two-thirds majority needed to convict. Seven Republicans joined with all 50 Democrats in supporting his conviction. The seven were: Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina, Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Mitt Romney of Utah, Ben Sasse of Nebraska, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

"My deepest thanks as well to all of the United States Senators and Members of Congress who stood proudly for the Constitution we all revere and for the sacred legal principles at the heart of our country," Trump said in a statement. "It is a sad commentary on our times that one political party in America is given a free pass to denigrate the rule of law, defame law enforcement, cheer mobs, excuse rioters, and transform justice into a tool of political vengeance, and persecute, blacklist, cancel and suppress all people and viewpoints with whom or which they disagree."

In his post-impeachment missive, Trump hinted at his future political plans now that his trial is over. He didn't give specifics, but he said that his movement "has only just begun."

"Our historic, patriotic, and beautiful movement to Make America Great Again has only just begun. In the months ahead, I have much to share with you, and I look forward to continuing our incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people," he said. "We have so much work ahead of us, and soon we will emerge with a vision for a bright, radiant, and limitless American future."

"Together there is nothing we cannot accomplish," the former president added.

Disengagement process at Pangong Tso to be complete by Friday
[OneIndia] The disengagement at Pangong Tso by the armies of India and China will be completed by Friday. The disengagement is taking place as per schedule, sources have told OneIndia.

There is rapid movement of Chinese heavy vehicles beyond Finger 8, satellite images have shown.

While armoured elements like battle tanks and armoured personnel carriers are being withdrawn from friction points in the south bank of Pangong Tso, troops are being pulled back from the north bank areas, sources said.

The sources said withdrawal of armoured elements from the south bank of Pangong Tso is almost complete and temporary structures erected by both sides will be demolished in the next few days.

"The disengagement process will take time as both sides are together carrying out verification of the withdrawal of troops and military hardware," said a source.

The disengagement of troops and armoured elements is limited to the friction points where the two sides were on an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation, sources said.

After a nine-month standoff, the two militaries reached the agreement on disengagement in the north and south banks of Pangong lake that mandates both sides to cease forward deployment of troops in a "phased, coordinated and verifiable" manner.

523,000 fully vaccinated Israelis: Four severe cases of COVID, no deaths
[Hot Air via Bongino] A year ago we were wondering whether an effective vaccine for coronaviruses might ever be developed for human beings. Six months ago we were wondering whether any of the vaccines in the pipeline would truly work or if 50 percent efficacy was the best we could hope for.
What was the name of that rush-rush plan the previous president of the US touted?
Today, looking at these numbers, I’m wondering whether the mRNA vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna are the most momentous medical breakthrough since the polio vaccine.
Oh, that's right - Pfizer did it all on the own.
According to the latest data, 80 percent of Israelis aged 60 or older have gotten both their shots whereas just 20 percent of the 16-59 demographic have. The vaccine has eliminated COVID deaths and almost completely eliminated severe cases of COVID among the demographic that’s *most susceptible* to those outcomes.

So if you've had both shots, you have a roughly one-in-1,000 chance of being infected, a one-in-35,000 chance of being sent to the hospital, and a one-in-130,000 chance of having a truly worrisome case. And again, that's a sample that includes a huge percentage of older, previously vulnerable people. The vaccine has lifted the cloud of COVID from over the heads of Israeli senior citizens.
On the other hand, there are 300 million Americans who haven't been infected. Most of them have not been vaccinated.

Green tea compound aids tumor-suppressing, DNA-repairing protein
[EurekaAlert] TROY, N.Y. -- An antioxidant found in green tea may increase levels of p53, a natural anti-cancer protein, known as the "guardian of the genome" for its ability to repair DNA damage or destroy cancerous cells. Published today in Nature Communications, a study of the direct interaction between p53 and the green tea compound, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), points to a new target for cancer drug discovery.

"Both p53 and EGCG molecules are extremely interesting. Mutations in p53 are found in over 50% of human cancer, while EGCG is the major anti-oxidant in green tea, a popular beverage worldwide," said Chunyu Wang, corresponding author and a professor of biological sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. "Now we find that there is a previously unknown, direct interaction between the two, which points to a new path for developing anti-cancer drugs. Our work helps to explain how EGCG is able to boost p53's anti-cancer activity, opening the door to developing drugs with EGCG-like compounds."

Wang, a member of the Rensselaer Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies, is an expert in using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to study specific mechanisms in Alzheimer's disease and cancer, including p53, which he described as "arguably the most important protein in human cancer."

P53 has several well-known anti-cancer functions, including halting cell growth to allow for DNA repair, activating DNA repair, and initiating programmed cell death -- called apoptosis -- if DNA damage cannot be repaired. One end of the protein, known as the N-terminal domain, has a flexible shape, and therefore, can potentially serve several functions depending on its interaction with multiple molecules.

EGCG is a natural antioxidant, which means it helps to undo the near constant damage caused by using oxygen metabolism. Found in abundance in green tea, EGCG is also packaged as an herbal supplement.

Myanmar Protesters Block Arrests as UN Demands Suu Kyi's Release
[AnNahar] Opposition to Myanmar's new military regime intensified on Saturday as spontaneous neighbourhood watch groups mobilised to thwart arrests of anti-coup activists and the UN demanded the release of ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The army takeover that brought a decade-old democracy to an end last week has unleashed a storm of anger and defiance, with huge daily protests bringing urban centres around the country to a standstill.

Since taking Suu Kyi and her top allies into custody, troops have stepped up arrests of civil servants, doctors and others joining strikes demanding the generals relinquish power.

Army looking at ways to ‘account for biological differences' with new fitness test
[Army Times] Army officials are evaluating a version of the stalled Army Combat Fitness Test that would account for biological differences between men and women, according to Training and Doctrine Command.

The ACFT officially became the Army’s test of record in October, but Congress mandated a pause on further implementation pending an independent study to determine how it will impact deployed soldiers, recruiting and retention.

Changing elements of the test might also satisfy lawmakers who worried late last year about the disproportionately high failure rates among women. One proposal is that the ACFT could score soldiers on a servicewide percentile, separated by gender, Task and Purpose first reported Thursday.

TRADOC spokeswoman Lt. Col. Margaret Kageleiry said that so far the ACFT is remaining gender-neutral, but the Army "is looking at means to apply those scores based on gender to account for biological differences."

"We are addressing these concerns in coordination with Army senior leaders, Congress, and with those it impacts the most, our American Soldiers," Kageleiry added in an email.

Soldiers are currently expected to train for the ACFT, but scores won’t count against them until a much later date.

"On the current path, we believe it will be mid" fiscal 2022, Kageleiry said. Until then, the Army is working to collect data on different policy options, she added.

How exactly the Army plans to account for biological differences in the ACFT isn’t yet clear. Suggested changes — including adding a plank alternative to the hanging leg tuck — were leaked to an Army forum on Reddit in January.
