Bodycam video shows moment deputy shoots dead knife-wielding suspect who'd stabbed elderly man, 77, in grocery store argument over a face mask
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • Sean Ruis, 43, was shot and killed by veteran Eaton County Sheriff's deputy in Michigan after violent mask dispute

  • Michigan State Police say Ruis stabbed 77-year-old man inside a grocery store after the victim chided him for failing to wear a mask

  • Ruis was later pulled over by the deputy and pulled a knife on her

  • Video shows deputy ordered Ruis to drop the knife and backed away, but suspect continued advancing on her, prompting her to open fire

  • Deputy, a 22-year veteran, is seen on bodycam video firing at least nine rounds

And now they absolutely have to. Yeah, they have base instincts. But those are not enough without learned behaviors to back them up.

Covid-19 vaccine developed by US biotech firm Moderna enters final stage trial
[France24] US biotech firm Moderna said Tuesday it would enter the final stage of human trials for its Covid-19 vaccine on July 27, to test how well it protects people in the real world.

The announcement came as the results from an earlier trial intended to prove the vaccine was safe and triggered antibody production were published.

The upcoming Phase 3 trial will recruit 30,000 participants in the US, with half to receive the vaccine at 100 microgram dose levels, and the other half to receive a placebo.

Researchers will then track them over two years to determine whether they are protected against infection by the virus. Or, if they do get infected, whether the vaccine prevents symptoms from developing.

If they do get symptoms, the vaccine can still be considered a success if it stops severe cases of Covid-19.

The study should run until October 27, 2022, but preliminary results should be available long before.

The announcement came shortly after the New England Journal of Medicine published results from the first stage of Moderna's vaccine trial, which showed the first 45 participants all developed antibodies to the virus.

Moderna is considered to be in a leading position in the global race to find a vaccine against the coronavirus, which has infected more than 13.2 million people and killed 570,000.

But scientists caution that the first vaccines to come to market may not be the most effective or safest.

#5  A summary of a posted story at Instapundit. I guess you could call it 'anti-vaccine".

Vaccines are hard to develop, and can be dangerous. This is a vaccine for a disease where 40% (at current estimate, up from 35% before) have no symptoms, and where only about .4% die. It’s also a widespread disease — this isn’t Ebola where you could vaccinate 50,000 people and bring an outbreak to an end. You’d have to vaccinate a billion or more. When you vaccinate huge numbers of people for a disease that isn’t very dangerous, your vaccine has to be very safe to be better than the disease. That doesn’t go well with a rushed development effort.

#8  #2 You, usually, don't start with scary stories about a specific vaccine unless there some actual examples - that's why they've all this extensive testing. But the author already sure it'll do more harm then good.

p.s. No vaccine can be more dangerous (at least since they've learned not to use wrong adjuvants) as the actual infection.
Posted by: g(r)omgoru || 07/15/2020 12:33 Comments || Top||

#9  Its a unique vaccine because it produces a unique "spike protein" signature, so the immune system can learn to attack the virus without the virus itself being put into the body. The vaccine is RNA based, just like the virus, so it might actually be effective in producing lots of specific antibodies. The phase 3 will be important to make sure it doesnt over-rev the immune system, in addition to making sure it does cause the body to produce antibodies for SARS-CoV-2, and that there are no heretofore unseen adverse effects.

If this works, it will be great for high risk for death populations, like people with multiple comorbidities. Those are the populations that should have been concentrated on from the beginning instead of the whole population.

Posted by: Glenmore || 07/15/2020 18:28 Comments || Top||

#14  "I keep reading that infection does not necessarily confer immunity. If that's true, can vaccine confer immunity?"

That's the trick. If the vaccine provokes too small a response, then it could actually makes things worse if you get the disease (see e.g. Dengue vaccine). If it provokes too much response you could get a cytokine storm. And even if you do make antibodies, no one knows how long they will last.

One more thing for New Yorkers to worry about ... NYC Health Department issues a warning after mosquitoes infected with West Nile Virus are detected in the city
[Daily Mail, where America gets its news]
  • New York City has detected its first cases of West Nile Virus this year after infected Culex mosquitoes were discovered on Staten Island and in the Bronx

  • The Health Department said it has already conducted larviciding from a helicopter over marsh areas in Staten Island, Bronx, Queens and Brooklyn

  • The plan is to apply larvidcide in catch basins, marshlands and other areas with standing water so they can kill larvae before the mosquitoes can bite

  • West Nile virus is a neuroinvasive disease that can cause mild or moderate febrile illness but 80 percent of cases as asymptomatic

  • People 50 years or older tend to be most at risk, as well as those with a weakened immune system
...just like everything else, it seems...
  • Remove standing water and wear mosquito repellent to avoid infection

  • The virus was first detected in NYC 21 years ago

  • Out of the 353 people who have contracted the virus 46 (13%) have died
Terrifying. Why that’s slightly more than two per year. Let’s start panicking now.

Belgium, once hard-hit, reports zero coronavirus deaths for first time since March
[Al Ahram] Belgium, which has reined in the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
after becoming the worst-hit mid-sized country in the world, reported zero new coronavirus-related deaths in 24 hours on Tuesday for the first time since March 10.As in many European countries that were hard-hit by the pandemic in March and April, Belgium sharply reduced infections by imposing a lockdown, which is now being lifted.

The total number of deaths reported by the national public health institute Sciensano remained at 9,787. In the country of 11.5 million people, that works out to around 850 deaths per million, worst in the world apart from the tiny city state of San Marino. The peak daily corpse count was 343 on April 12.

The curve of confirmed infections has flattened dramatically, with a total of 62,781, though the daily average of new cases in the last seven days, at 95, was up 11% from the previous week.

Facing a potentially risky summer with its citizens taking vacations abroad, Belgium is vastly more prepared than at the start of the year when skiing holidaymakers brought the new coronavirus back, health minister Maggie de Block told Rooters last week.

The so-called reproduction rate, a key figure that shows the average number of infections caused by each person with the virus, remained below one at 0.86.

The Belgian government is meeting on July 15 to discuss further easing of lockdown measures, after making face masks mandatory in shops, cinemas and museums on July 10.

WHO says no return to normality for ‘foreseeable future’
[IsraelTimes] The World Health Organization warns that there could be no return to normality any time soon, as too many countries have been bungling their response to the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic.
Thank goodness we’ve given up our membership, and so needn’t listen to their diktats anymore.
In light of a daily record of 230,000 new cases of COVID-19 were reported to the WHO on Sunday, the UN health agency says that the pandemic is only going to get worse, unless people stick to the basics of physical distancing, handwashing, and wearing masks.

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warns that countries that have been easing their way out of lockdowns are now witnessing a resurgence of the virus because they were not following proven methods to reduce risk.

"I want to be straight with you: there will be no return to the ’old normal’ for the foreseeable future," Tedros tells a virtual news briefing.

"Let me blunt: too many countries are headed in the wrong direction."

"The virus remains public enemy number one, but the actions of many governments and people do not reflect this."

He says mixed messages from leaders have been undermining trust.

If governments do not roll out a comprehensive strategy to suppress transmission of the virus, and if populations do not follow basic public health principles, "there is only one way this pandemic is going to go," he says.

"It’s going to get worse and worse and worse."

The novel coronavirus has killed nearly 570,000 people and infected more than 12.9 million since the outbreak emerged in China last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP.

"Although the number of daily deaths remains relatively stable, there is a lot to be concerned about," says Tedros.

He says there were four scenarios playing out around the world.

They are: countries that were alert and avoided large outbreaks, those that got a major outbreak under control, those that eased restrictions and are now backsliding, and those that are in an intense transmission phase.

Tedros says the epicenter of the virus remains the Americas.
It’s a group project —and grateful we are not to be carrying the load alone any longer.
An Eastern European friend notes that the Americas do not use the BCG vaccine at birth...
We only give it to those few who are at risk of being exposed to the disease. Tuberculosis is not endemic here — as I understand it, TB exposure in the US is pretty much limited to those with HIV/AIDS, needle drug users, and illegal immigrants from Third World countries.

Work Continues To Contain Fire On Navy Ship Thought Extinguished Overnight
[ABC News} Defense officials say it's too soon to tell what the ship's future will be.

The U.S. Navy said that at least one fire continues to burn aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard, as progress is being made in extinguishing the fire that has raged in San Diego's harbor since Sunday morning.

A defense official told ABC News that as of Tuesday evening the fire was 80% contained.

Defense officials acknowledged that the fire has caused serious damage aboard the ship and that they face tough decisions about the ship's future, including whether the ship will be able to continue in service.
More at link, including a video.

Video mentioned that there are burn marks on the hull from the fire inside, which pretty much meant the hull is a total loss due to distempering of the hull steel.

FBI Fielded More Background Checks For Gun Buyers In June Than Ever Before
[Daily Caller] The FBI ran nearly 8 million background checks for gun purchases from March to June, the Wall Street Journal reported.

Background checks for firearm purchases in June reached 7.8 million, up 136% from last year. Checks for civilians pursuing a license to carry were the highest recorded in the last 20 years, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the WSJ reported.

"With the pandemic, it’s driven more by fear for personal safety; it’s people who haven’t been interested in the past," Jacquelyn Clark, Bristlecone Shooting, Training, Retail Center and Gun Range co-owner, told the WSJ.

#1  A friend and I visited a long established (52 year) retailer and wholesaler near Columbus, GA. yesterday. The parking lot was full and the store was packed with shoppers waiting in line to process their purchases. The large rack inventory was quite low. The owner and sales staff of six looked haggard and bewildered.

I suspect a media driven fear of a possible Biden win in November may be feeding the buying frenzy.

The current Antifa/BLM riots and general lawlessness — and the recent attempts to expand them to the suburbs and smaller towns — are enough to get people to gun shops now. I’ve seen several stories in recent weeks about Liberals for the first time in their lives feeling the need to buy a gun for protection, and discovering the process isn’t anything like it’s been described.

I suspect concerns about Mr. Biden will ramp up in October.

Group Holds "Love March" In Chicago To End Gang Violence Without More Police
Hot Air
Over the past several weeks, the number of people either injured or murdered in shootings in Chicago has rapidly grown too large to keep track of. And as almost always happens with gang violence in poorer urban areas, the vast majority of the victims are Black or Hispanic. Now, some residents of those very neighborhoods in the Windy City are growing exasperated with the inability of the city to tame the violence and are hoping to do something about it themselves. While their methods and theory may be a bit dubious (more on that shortly), their hearts and goals are clearly in the right place.

A group named GoodKids MadCity has been working to shut down some of the violence through mutual cooperation and communication. One organizer, 22-year-old Nita Tennyson, who lost one of her best friends in a shooting last weekend, helped to organize a "love march" in an effort to get the community engaged in the process. (CBS Chicago)

...Another organizer said that the gangs will "come to terms, and agree to peace treaties, and end the cycle of violence that has claimed the lives of women and children."

Moroccan 'revenge porn' victims smash taboos by speaking out
[Al Ahram] A social media campaign started by three Moroccan friends has emboldened hundreds of "Dire Revenge porn" victims to share their experiences, raising awareness about online abuse and challenging taboos.

The Diha F'Rassek movement - meaning 'Mind Your Own Business' - was launched to fight back against dozens of "Dire Revenge porn" accounts that appeared online during the country's coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
lockdown, said co-founder Sophia Zerh, 26.

"We started to receive messages that were really shocking, for instance girls starting to think about suicide," she told the Thomson Rooters Foundation, adding that the campaign has drawn 15,000 followers in less than two months.

More importantly, Zerh said, about 300 women and girls have contacted the campaign group about the abuse they suffered.

Some agreed to have their testimonies posted anonymously on the group's Instagram page, which Zerh said could help other potential victims spot danger signs and challenge taboos about gender relations in the socially conservative country.

Fearing relatives could find out, many victims are too scared to speak out or seek help, she said:

"Even if a girl didn't share any nude pictures, she's super afraid of her family just hearing about something. It's really hard to convince them to go to the police."

"Women in Morocco are easy targets, with Arab culture - not everyone is lucky enough to have an open-minded family."

SCARED AND ASHAMED
In other countries too, women's rights activists have reported a rise in online posts of intimate images of women and girls, usually by abusive partners or ex-partners, during COVID-19 lockdowns.

Online abuse has become a common feature of domestic abuse in Morocco, which criminalised all forms of violence against women in 2018.

But despite the two-year-old law, campaigners say domestic abuse victims face numerous hurdles in securing convictions against their abusers.

A government survey last year showed 54.5% of Moroccan women have been subjected to violence, but only 6.6% have brought their case before justice.

When victims get in touch with Diha F'Rassek, which is supported by a volunteer network, they receive help to report the abuse or are put in touch with free legal and counselling services.

Others simply want to talk.

"Sometimes people just need someone to talk to because they are too ashamed to talk to family or friends, but feel freer to talk to us," Zerh said.

Some victims are so scared they create fake social media accounts to get in touch, she added.

Former Ohio State professor arrested trying to flee to China with stolen laptops, USB drives
[CollegeFix] An Ohio State University rheumatology professor and researcher with ties to China was arrested while trying to flee the country in May, according to the FBI.

Song Guo Zheng, 57, was arrested Friday, May 22, 2020 as he landed in Anchorage, Alaska. He was about to catch a flight to China when he was taken into custody.

According to the FBI, Zheng was involved in a scheme to use approximately $4.1 million in grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to bolster China’s research in the areas of rheumatology and immunology. Zheng is also accused of making false statements to cover up his involvement with China while working at multiple universities, including Ohio State.

“Yet again, we are faced with a professor at a U.S. University, who is a member of a Chinese Talent Plan, allegedly and deliberately failing to disclose his relationship with a Chinese university and receipt of funds from the Chinese Government in order to obtain millions of dollars in U.S. grant money designed to benefit the health and well-being of the people of the United States — not to be hijacked to supplement the research goals of the Chinese Communist Party,” said Assistant Attorney General for National Security John C. Demers in a statement following the arrest.

“We allege that Zheng was preparing to flee the country after he learned that his employer had begun an administrative process into whether or not he was complying with rules governing taxpayer-funded grants,” said David M. DeVillers, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Ohio. “This is our office’s third recent case involving the illegal transfer of intellectual property and research to China,” said DeVillers.

In June, Harvard University Chemistry Professor Charles Lieber was indicted for making false statements about his involvement with a talent recruitment program sponsored by the Chinese government. In May, Professor Simon Ang, head of the University of Arkansas High Density Electronics Center, was arrested for failing to reveal his connections to China when he applied for grants from NASA. On May 8, Dr. Xiao-Jiang Li, 63, of Emory University, was sentenced to one year of probation on a felony charge and ordered to pay $35,089 in restitution for filing false tax returns in which he failed to report at least $500,000 in income from work at Chinese universities.

“This case highlights another example of a Chinese Talent Plan member allegedly using U.S. taxpayer funds for the benefit of the Chinese government,” said Alan E. Kohler, Jr, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Counterintelligence Division. “According to the criminal complaint, Zheng violated laws concerning the use of federal research funds and did not disclose his employment in China. The FBI will continue to work with our partners to stop such illegal activity and protect U.S. research,” said Kohler.

Magistrate Judge Elizabeth Preston Deavers ordered Zheng held without bond, determining him to be a flight risk.

China slaps tit-for-tat sanctions on US lawmakers in human rights spat
[IsraelTimes] Unspecified ’corresponding sanctions’ imposed on key critics of Beijing’s policies of detainment for Uighurs, Kazakhs and other ethnic minorities in ideological re-education camps.

China announced on Monday retaliatory sanctions against three senior US Republican politicians and an American envoy in a deepening row over Beijing’s treatment of Uighurs in the western Xinjiang region.

Some of the most outspoken critics of China — senators Marco Rubio

Cruz's comments have been known to leave life-threatening wounds at better than forty feet...
and Congressman Chris Smith — were targeted by the action, as was the US ambassador-at-large for international religious freedom, Sam Brownback.

The unspecified "corresponding sanctions" were announced days after the US imposed visa bans and asset freezes on several Chinese officials, including the Communist Party chief in Xinjiang, Chen Quanguo, over rights abuses in the region.

The move was "in response to the US’s wrong actions," foreign ministry front man Hua Chunying said at a regular briefing.

"We urge the US to immediately withdraw its wrong decision, and stop words and actions that interfere in China’s internal affairs and harm China’s interests," she said.

China tests powerful missiles capable of sinking US warships
Of course one must pass tests as a precondition, but that is no guarantee that it will go as well in real life, when the target will be actively defending itself... possibly even proactively.
[ALMASDARNEWS] The Air Force of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army tested a ballistic anti-ship missile in the South China Sea recently.According to the National Interest website, these tests came in the wake of the news issued last May that the Chinese People’s Liberation Army had installed cruise missiles and surface-to-air missiles near the coral reef areas, west of the Philippines.

Pentagon front man Lt. Col. Dave Eastbourne said that China’s missile test this week contradicts "China’s claim that it wants peace in the region and it is clear that such actions are coercive actions aimed at intimidating other parties in the South China Sea."

The tests of these missiles are the latest step in China’s efforts to support its policy of "indisputable illusory sovereignty" over sea , air and land features within the "nine-line" that it drew on the map of Southeast Asia.

Tech companies are ending leases and consolidating offices as remote work is here to stay
h/t Instapundit
[CNBC] - On a Saturday in April, several executives from SoundCommerce rented a U-Haul, drove it to their office in Seattle and loaded up the truck with stand-up desks, 48-inch monitors and various other gadgets and personal belongings. For two days, they traversed town, dropping the items off at employees’ houses and apartments.

With the coronavirus forcing non-essential employees to shelter in place, it had been weeks since any the start-up’s 20 or so staffers had worked at the office. It was clear they wouldn’t be going back.

The lease expires July 31, and SoundCommerce CEO Eric Best said the company did not extend its contract.

...In the tech hubs of Seattle, Silicon Valley, New York and elsewhere, many CEOs are coming to the same conclusion — real estate is not a worthwhile expense. Start-ups that never intended to be fully distributed are letting leases end or looking for ways to get out of longer deals, while bigger employers are closing facilities, consolidating space and exploring ways to provide workers with flexible arrangements and options closer to home to avoid long commutes.

...Facebook, Twitter, Okta and Box are among the tech companies that have announced a more permanent shift to a hybrid approach. Many others are likely to follow as extended school closures or shortened days make remote options essential. Officials in Los Angeles and San Diego announced on Monday that schools will start online-only in the fall.

Subways sparkle, but does cleaning decrease COVID-19 risk?
Covid-19 is not the only infectious agent out there. Daily sanitizing of mass transit will reduce the infection loads of all sorts of diseases, not to mention reducing the spread of future unmentioned accidental lab releases. And of course the usual kinds of vermin temporarily between hosts. Ick.
[IsraelTimes] Mass transit systems around the world have taken unprecedented and expensive steps to curb the spread of the coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
.

Mass transit systems around the world have taken unprecedented — and expensive — steps to curb the spread of the coronavirus, including New York shutting down its subways overnight and testing powerful ultraviolet lamps to disinfect seats, poles and floors.

The cleaning measures produced something commuters have not seen in a while, or possibly ever: thousands of freshly scrubbed cars that look, feel and even smell clean.
