#1  I loved those comics::An adult cousin had those in his apartment, along with some Tintin comics, and I paged through them when my mom visited him. I learned to read french from them. And my fondest bonding moments with my brother and my roomie was when I read the copies from the college library to them, translating them in real time. There are English translations, but the original French text is way more clever and dynamic. And their laconic and perceptive takes on their continental neighbors were always good for a knowing laugh.

Alas, the writing went down in quality after Rene Goscinny passed; he was the anti-pc one of the pair, and had guts of iron.

RIP both of them.

#2  The German translations were excellent, but of course the French original had so many witty remarks you could only fully appreciate if you knew France very well.

#5  The Asterix and Obelix books were some of the first things that my daughter began to read, and that I read to her at night when she was pre-school age; the English translations were widely available in Greece, and later on when we were stationed in Spain. She memorized all of the little tribes' members names. When she was five, and we transferred from Greece to Spain, and I told her we were about to cross into France from Germany, she asked me, in all seriousness, if we were going to meet any indomitable Gauls.

#6  I remember them from my high school days. I was taking Spanish, but we shared a room with the French class and there were copies available. Even not knowing French you could see how funny they were. A classic.
Posted by: magpie || 03/26/2020 9:25 Comments || Top||

#7  The illustrations were as witty as the text, and they worked hand in glove. Even if a French phrase escaped the reader's understanding, he could get the drift if he shared the snarky take-the-piss, up-yours attitude of the creators toward:
- stupid authority figures (Romans) and their dopey enforcers (centurions);
- pretentious 'intellos' (the drama-queen drama director with absurd mascara)
- male-female relations, with the blasé, hoo-boy! women usually knowing better, a la Alice Kramsden, then their overbearing know-it-all husbands
- always a Bardot lookalike slipped into the scenes of the Gauls' village activities

It was a Gallic version of South Park before South Park.

Great stuff, and here's hoping the next generation will discover it and learn (some delightfully irreverent and lively) French this way.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Kathy Griffin Knows All
[EW] After checking into a hospital with "unbearably painful" symptoms, comedian
(I don't think so)
Kathy Griffin has spoken out against Donald Trump's response to the coronavirus outbreak.

In a quote tweet replying to the president, Griffin accused Trump of lying about how many coronavirus tests the United States has performed amid the ongoing pandemic that has claimed thousands of lives as it continues to spread around the world.
She has the real information given to her by her ouiji board
"I was sent to the #COVID19 isolation ward room in a major hospital ER from a separate urgent care facility," Griffin tweeted Wednesday, going on to criticize the vice president's leadership of the White House Coronavirus Task Force. "The hospital couldn’t test me for #coronavirus because of CDC (Pence task force) restrictions. #TESTTESTTEST"

Griffin also shared two photos in her tweet, which appeared to show the 59-year-old in a hospital bed behind a glass door while also wearing a protective mask over her nose and mouth.
I advise you to not look at the photos.
If diagnosed with coronavirus, Griffin would join the likes of Tom Hanks, Idris Elba, Debi Mazar, Daniel Dae Kim, Andy Cohen, and Nyle DiMarco as celebrities who've contracted COVID-19 during the outbreak.

Griffin previously sparred with Trump after she posed for a satirical photo holding a severed prosthetic head molded in the president's likeness, which led to intense public backlash and ignited a federal investigation.

When reached, a representative for Griffin was unable to immediately confirm the status of Griffin's health, but EW will update this post if new information becomes available. The White House did not immediately return our request for comment on Griffin's accusation against Trump.

MyPillow Making Face Masks for Hospitals During Coronavirus Pandemic
[BREITBART] MyPillow, the Minnesota manufacturer of specialty pillows, linens, and other household products, said that it is answering the call for more face masks as the country continues to deal with the global coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague)
...the twenty first century equivalent of bubonic plague, only instead of killing off a third of the population of Europe it kills 3.4 percent of those who notice they have it. It seems to be fond of the elderly, especially Iranian politicians and holy men...
pandemic.

The company announced Tuesday on Twitter that it is making face masks for hospitals across the country. MyPillow joins a growing list of private companies pitching in to address the shortage of face masks that U.S. healthcare professionals are facing as the number of COVID-19 cases continues to climb.

Decathlon turns scuba gear into ventilators to help fight coronavirus
[Jpost] The conversion of their line of Easybreath scuba masks was done alongside the Rome-based 3D-printing start-up Institute of Studies for the Integration of Systems (Isinnova)

Sporting goods giant Decathlon is contributing to the fight against coronavirus (aka COVID19 or Chinese Plague) by sending makeshift ventilators to hospitals in northern Italia.

While Decathlon, the French sporting goods retailer which is the largest such retailer in the world, typically doesn't sell ventilators, it does sell scuba gear, which they hacked and enhanced with specific components made by 3D printers to work as ventilators.

The conversion of their line of Easybreath scuba masks was done alongside the Rome-based Institute of Studies for the Integration of Systems (ISINNOVA), and was prompted by a request from the head physician of a hospital in Gardone Val Trompina in the Italian region of Lombardy, which is one of the regions hit worst by the coronavirus, to address the ventilator shortage, Cycling Weekly reported.

ISINNOVA uploaded the means of converting a scuba mask into a functioning ventilator online, creating a video detailing the process. This is to ensure other hospitals can use Decathlon scuba gear to make ventilators themselves. The specific 3D-printed valve ‐ which they called the "Charlotte Valve" ‐ used is patented, but the entire initiative is nonprofit, with the 3D-printed.

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
ISINNOVA has stated that this new invention, while functional, is still something that should only be used in emergencies.

"We are reiterating that the idea is designed for healthcare facilities and wants to help in realization of an emergency mask in the case of a full-blown difficult situation, where is not possible to in find official healthcare supplies," ISINNOVA said in a statement, according to the Mirror.

"Neither the mask nor the link are certified and their use is subject to a situation of mandatory need.

"Usage by the patient is subjected to the acceptance of use of an uncertified biomedical device, by providing a signed declaration.
"We clarify that the patent will remain free to use, because it is in our intention that all hospitals in need could use it if necessary."

However,
a hangover is the wrath of grapes...
on Wednesday, Decathlon stated on Twitter that, while the company has been approached by many hospitals, research centers and universities, and have shared their technical information, they haven't received confirmation from the institutions so far that such solutions really work and are used by doctors.

According to Cycling Weekly, Italian cycling clothes company Santini SMS is also working to help fight the virus, shifting their production of jerseys into making medical masks

Deborah Birx Brings New Era of Feminine Gravitas
[American Thinker] Our eyes have become accustomed to the visual clichés of the media. The male news anchor is a man of expertise and experience paired with a promising young woman who is smart but not yet accomplished. He has the gravitas of a person at the pinnacle of his career and she has the sex appeal of a vibrant young woman who has potential and promise, but is not yet proven. He is in his 60s and she is in her early to mid-30s. Around the conference table are men who are immediately recognizable; they are male leaders known for their experience and position. The two or three women are beautiful young aspiring leaders who obviously have the potential of "going somewhere" in their careers, but, alas, they are not yet seasoned by experience; they haven’t yet really earned their place at the table! We’ve all rejoiced at the sight of a few women around the President at the famous Resolute desk in the Oval Office and at the increasing visibility of colorful dresses among the dark suits, but the disparity of gravitas between the women and men has become more and more glaring.

Then, along comes the coordinator of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, Deborah L. Birx. At 63 years-of-age, Dr. Birx has earned significant credentials and she carries herself as a woman of distinction and expertise. She exudes gravitas ‐ effortlessly, simply as part and parcel of what her years of diligence and hard work have shaped her to be.

Dr. Birx is a public health physician who formerly served as an ambassador and the director of the global HIV/AIDS program at the Centers for Disease Control. Dr. Birx is also Col. Birx, having served for 20 years in the Army as an immunology clinician before retiring from the military in 2005. She has both developed and patented vaccines, "including leading one of the most influential HIV vaccine trials in history." She holds two U.S. Meritorious Service medals in addition to the Legion of Merit Award. The director of the scientific advisory board for Pepfar described Dr. Birx as a "bold leader" who makes decisions based on the data and has garnered respect for being willing to make the hard calls.

Dr. Birx obviously belongs among the leaders who are advising the president and leading the nation’s response to the global pandemic of Covid-19. In fact, she is a stand-out among all the experts, male and female, who surround the president at the briefings. It’s easy to see that the camaraderie is among equals, with the president even teasing Dr. Birx about her minor fever the previous weekend.

America has the most ammo in the global food fight
[MSN] Countries are starting to hoard food, threatening global trade.

Kazakhstan, one of the world’s biggest shippers of wheat flour, banned exports of that product along with others, including carrots, sugar and potatoes. Serbia has stopped the flow of its sunflower oil and other goods. Russia is leaving the door open to shipment bans and said it’s assessing the situation weekly.

Is this the start of a wave of food nationalism that will further disrupt supply chains and trade flows?

Corona Plague Roundup: 40,000 retired medical professionals step up in NYC
Coronavirus outbreak in New York sees 40,000 answer call to re-join health care industry, Cuomo says

Israel: Synagogues are coronavirus breeding grounds, study finds
[IsraelTimes] Almost a quarter of Israelis who contracted the novel coronavirus in Israel did so at a synagogue, according to a new data released by a Health Ministry body and published in Hebrew-language media. The data, based on about half of the cases that have been confirmed so far, shows 24 percent of those who came down with disease contracted it at a synagogue.

Synagogues have been allowed to remain open, though gatherings of more than 10 are generally prohibited. Many religious leaders have asked congregants to pray at home, though some, especially in the ultra-Orthodox community, have continued to congregate in quorums of at least 10 men.

Some 5% of cases were contracted at yeshivas, while 1% came from ritual baths, which Health Minister Yaakov Litzman has reportedly sought to keep open despite many people sharing the same water in succession.

Hotels were also a major contributor, with some 15% of cases coming from there, and restaurants contributed 12%.

Six percent of cases came from schools or daycares and another 3% from old age homes, while groceries and other stores contributed 14% together.

Voting booths contributed to 1% of cases, according to the study.

China lifting lockdown on virus epicenter Hubei province, but not its capital Wuhan

The city of Wuhan, where the outbreak started in late December, will remain locked down until April 8. China barred people from leaving or entering Wuhan starting Jan. 23 and expanded it to most of the province in succeeding days.

outbreak has reportedly identified 77 drugs that could potentially help stop the spread.

Researchers at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory published results this week from a project that enlisted the help of an IBM supercomputer named Summit, which helped identify the most effective existing drugs that could potentially combat the coronavirus.

The research focuses on the method the coronavirus uses to cling to cells via a spike protein. Summit used an algorithm to determine which drugs could bind to the protein and prevent the virus from doing what it wants.

"Summit was needed to rapidly get the simulation results we needed. It took us a day or two whereas it would have taken months on a normal computer," Jeremy Smith, one of the co-authors of the research, said in a statement.

"Our results don’t mean that we have found a cure or treatment for the coronavirus. We are very hopeful, though, that our computational findings will both inform future studies and provide a framework that experimentalists will use to further investigate these compounds. Only then will we know whether any of them exhibit the characteristics needed to mitigate this virus," he said.

On Tuesday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown to stem the spread of the potentially deadly virus ‐ and declared that no one will be allowed to leave their homes.

After the lockdown went into effect, locals were seen on TV news and social media being struck with batons in the streets of the southern state of Kerala.

So far, Germany has recorded 114 deaths as of Tuesday, according to RKI, the federal government agency and research institute responsible for disease control and prevention.

On Monday, the number of confirmed cases in Germany had increased by 4,062 and RKI president Lothar Wieler had been cautiously optimistic. "We see the trend that the exponential growth curve is flattening out somewhat."

However,

According to a survey by infratest dimap, a Berlin-based institute and company, a huge majority, or 95 percent, of Germans were supportive of the measures. For the next two weeks, German citizens are only allowed to meet members of their own household while public gatherings of more than two non-family members are generally forbidden.

Russia comes clean about real coronavirus numbers
[NYDailyNews] Russia’s coronavirus cases, which seemed low compared to the trajectory the infections have taken elsewhere in the world, are actually in line with those of other nations, President Vladimir Putin said from the inside of a hazmat suit on Tuesday.

Acknowledging that the low number of recorded cases – 495 so far, with no deaths – was likely a result of insufficient screening, Russian authorities said it was going to get worse. Indeed, the country needs to “prepare for the Italian scenario,” Denis Protsenko, who heads a hospital that Putin visited, according to the Associated Press.

New York Governor Says Social Distancing Slowing Coronavirus
[AnNahar] Social distancing appears to be slowing the spread of the coronavirus in New York, the epicenter of America's pandemic, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday. In his daily update on efforts to contain the deadly pandemic, Cuomo said projection rates suggested hospitalizations were increasing at a slower rate than before.
Thank goodness for that. How much better would it have been if they’d done so two weeks ago?
Cuomo said New York was still "on the way up the mountain" and wouldn't meet the peak of declared cases for another three weeks.

But he added that projections showed that hospitalizations were now doubling every 4.7 days as opposed to every two days as was the case on Sunday.

Active-duty Army officer in Maryland pulled to develop coronavirus vaccine
[FoxNews] A recent college graduate and doctoral student became the only active-duty service member to join a team of researchers in Maryland to help develop a vaccine for the coronavirus.

Army 2nd Lt. Ethan Green, a doctoral student at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, was tapped for the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) in Silver Spring, Md., dedicated to coronavirus research.

The institute launched its Emerging Infectious Disease Branch about a year and a half ago. Within that period, its researchers completed two Phase 2 clinical trials of Ebola vaccine candidates in the U.S. and Africa, conducted a first-in-human trial of a Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) vaccine, and developed, manufactured and tested a Zika vaccine.

“We created this department to be already primed and ready to go," WRAIR branch director Dr. Kayvon Modjarrad told Military.com in March 4 interview.

Green graduated from Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C., just 10 months ago. He is the only active-duty service member on the team of coronavirus researchers at WRAIR, Military.com reported. Green said he wakes up at 2 a.m. every day and heads to the lab to harvest proteins found in the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus to be used in the vaccine for COVID-19.

At least 321 active cases of COVID-19 were identified within the Department of Defense Tuesday, including 174 military members, 61 dependents, 59 civilians and 27 contractors. Four military members and one civilian have recovered. One contractor died Saturday.

The Department of Veterans Affairs identified at least 296 active cases as of Tuesday, Military.com reported. Four people employed by the department, including two in New York City, have died after contracting the virus.

Green said he expected his team at WRAIR to at least begin trials for the vaccine by this winter.

Apart from the government effort, several private companies, including Moderna Therapeutics, CureVac, GlaxoSmithKline, Inovio Pharmaceuticals, Johnson & Johnson and Sanofi are in varying stages of developing a vaccine for the coronavirus.

64 Migrants Found Dead in Cargo Container in Mozambique
[AlAhram] More than 60 suspected undocumented migrants colonists from Æthiopia were found dead on Tuesday in a cargo container in Mozambique's northwest Tete province, a senior hospital official said.

"A truck transporting illegal immigrants colonists from Malawi, suspected to be Æthiopians, was stopped at the Mussacana weight bridge in Tete, and 64 people were found dead. Only 14 survived," the official, who asked not be named because he does not have the authority to speak to the media, told AFP.

"The cause of death is presumed to be asphyxiation."

The victims were discovered in a blue cargo container loaded on to a haulage truck, according to pictures seen by AFP.

Mozambique is generally seen as a smuggling corridor for migrants colonists seeking to make their way to South Africa.

South Africa -- the continent's most industrialised country -- is a magnet for poor migrants colonists not only from neighbouring countries such as Lesotho and Zim-bob-we, but even nations further afield, such as as Æthiopia.

Chinese Hackers Attacked Foreign Health Care, Military, Oil Networks as Coronavirus Hit China
[DefenseOne] In January, the ‘widespread’ assault targeted a vulnerability in virtual desktops, cloud computing, and network applications, FireEye announced.

As the coronavirus epidemic reached crisis level in Wuhan, China, in January, a known group of state-backed cyber hackers launched attacks at healthcare companies and other key industries outside the country, according to cybersecurity company FireEye.

FireEye announced their findings on the attacks Wednesday morning, calling it “one of the most widespread campaigns we have seen from China-nexus espionage actors in recent years.

The Chinese hackers, a group known as APT41, are affiliated with the government but also conduct financial crimes for personal gain. FireEye reports that they targeted a specific known vulnerability in the national vulnerabilities database (CVE-2019-19781 affecting Citrix Application Delivery Controllers) on Jan. 20. The vulnerability could allow attackers to exploit virtual desktop, cloud computing, and networking applications to steal data. The group also hit military installations and oil and gas targets, FireEye said, without naming where or in which countries to protect the identity of their clients.

FireEye says there was a dropoff in the group’s cyberattacks five days later, around the Chinese New Year, which occurred on Jan. 25, which is common among China-based threat groups. China began to implement very strict quarantine measures in Hubei province on Jan. 23 suggesting that the activity was going on as the pandemic picked up momentum. There was another drop off between Feb. 2 and 19.

“While it is possible that this reduction in activity might be related to the COVID-19 quarantine measures in China, APT41 may have remained active in other ways which we were unable to observe with FireEye telemetry,” they write in a blogspot posted Wednesday. Defense One is unable to independently verify their claims.

Activity picked up again shortly after Feb. 19, they report. The current wave of attacks “seems to reveal a high operational tempo and wide collection requirements for APT41.”

The unprecedented level of remote working and living during the coronavirus pandemic has also seen an increase in cyberattacks, most notably phishing attacks targeting individuals with phony links and emails, according to cybersecurity company CrowdStrike. Attackers are coming from, but are not limited to sources inside China.

“We’re seeing this from both nation-state actors, notably groups in China we track under PANDA designations, as well as criminal groups,” Robert Sheldon, CrowdStrike director of Government Technology Strategy, said in an email to reporters on Monday. PANDA is how CrowdStrike designates advanced persistent threat groups from China.

The Pentagon has been worried about increased cyberattacks in light of increased telework. On March 16, during a “virtual town hall, Essye Miller, DOD’s principal deputy chief information officer, said that adversaries are “already taking advantage of the situation and the environment that we have on hand.”

On Tuesday, Defense Secretary Mark Esper reminded Defense Department personnel in another virtual town hall that working from home carried its own risks.

“If you’re teleworking, if you’re doing anything that involves the networks and IT, be very, very careful of IT vulnerabilities. We are a little bit more exposed when we’re doing telework,” he said.

White House Responds To Seattle NPR's Decision To Stop Airing Coronavirus Press Conferences
[DailyCaller] The White House criticized Wednesday the Seattle-area NPR station’s recent decision to stop airing the coronavirus task force press briefings.

"It’s not surprising, but also a failure of their duty to the American people, that some media outlets would choose to block their audiences from receiving accurate, up-to-date information on President Trump’s whole-of-government approach to slowing the spread of COVID-19," White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere told Daily Caller. "No other Administration has been as transparent and as accessible as this one, and we will continue to make sure this Nation hears from its leaders and top health experts during this global pandemic."

...
KUOW, the NPR station broadcasting across Washington’s Puget Sound, announced Tuesday night that they "will not be airing the briefings live due to a pattern of false or misleading information that cannot be fact checked in real time."

The station noted it will still monitor the briefings and will "continue to share all news relevant to Washington State."
It is past time to begin looking at defunding "National Pan-handling Radio."

#5  TW, a cursory search of the Dubya years turns up this from an Oregon Public Broadcasting statement on proposed Trump cuts for PBS.

President Trump is not the first to propose cuts to CPB. For example, during the George W. Bush administration, CPB funding cuts were proposed every year. Still, Congress ultimately decided to continue funding public broadcasting at a consistent level.

And the above included at least two discrete periods when the GOP controlled both houses (before the Jeffords party switch and after the 2002 elections if memory serves)

I think the Big Bird meme became a thing when Romney was running for President, and proposing cuts. (and does anyone now think that he would have followed through?)

That and the typical virtue signaling anti-trump nonsense.

India-Pakistan
Indian Ports in Chaos as Virus Lockdown Hits Operations
[gCaptain] India’s government told all major ports that the coronavirus fight is a valid reason to halt some port operations, leaving traders in disarray about the flow of goods in and out of the world’s seventh-biggest economy.

India’s Ministry of Shipping advised ports they may consider the Covid-19 pandemic as grounds for invoking force majeure, a clause absolving companies from meeting their contractual commitments for reasons beyond their control, according to a letter Tuesday seen by Bloomberg. Several ports and terminals have done so already, while also saying they aim to maintain operations as the government deemed shipping an “essential service.”

The move follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s three-week lockdown on India’s 1.3 billion people, the most far-reaching measure by any government amid the pandemic. The declarations set off a wave of confusion, with traders and shipbrokers trying to assess whether the measures would halt operations at ports, which include some of the country’s biggest handlers of oil, liquefied natural gas and shipping containers.

China Is Innocent: Says U.N. and World Health Organization Reject Claim it Launched Coronavirus Pandemic
The global coronavirus pandemic did not start in China, a spokesman for the Chinese Communist Party declared Tuesday, claiming support from both the United Nations (U.N.) and World Health Organization (WHO) in rejecting "hurtful" U.S. allegations to the contrary as "bald-faced racism and xenophobia."

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang told a daily news briefing not only does China have the full backing of the globalist organizations in denying it started the viral outbreak, the U.S. must cease and desist forthwith from challenging their assertions. He said:

"The Chinese side has repeated many times that some people in the U.S. have been seeking by every means to link the virus with China and stigmatize China. This was met with strong indignation and firm objection from the Chinese people. WHO and the international community explicitly oppose linking the virus with any specific country or region and reject stigmatization.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said ’it is shameful to see increasing acts of racial discrimination and prejudice as we fight the COVID19 pandemic’ and ’we must always fight racism and prejudice’. E.U. High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell said the virus knows no border and we need cooperation and multilateralism, instead of competition and recrimination, in face of the common challenge for mankind. It is not the time for countries to blame one another with terms like ’Chinese virus’.

WHO believes that we should avoid calling it ’Chinese virus’. Now is the moment for solidarity, for respecting facts and for fighting together."

Mossad imports virus test kits in Israel
[YNet] Medical equipment and test kits for coronavirus, that were purchased by the Mossad intelligence agency, arrived in Israel by plane that landed at Ben Gurion Airport Thursday evening.

Mossad procured another batch of 100,00 test kits last Thursday and is expected to bring millions more in the coming weeks
.
Mossad, which is not usually involved in procurement, was drawn to the issue due to a critical shortage in test kits. The organization's members were able to obtain complete kits from two different countries.

'Game-changer': Britain days away from releasing millions of coronavirus finger-prick tests
h/t Instapundit
[Sydney Morning Herald] - The British government is just "days" away from releasing 3.5 million self-administered finger-prick tests that could prove a game-changer in easing the economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.
Testing for anti-Covid antibodies
The tests will probably be stocked in retailers such as the major pharmacy chain Boots and available to order online via Amazon, however the first stage of the rollout will be reserved for doctors, nurses and other essential workers.

The public will eventually be able to take the test at home to determine whether they have had coronavirus and developed antibodies, meaning they can avoid lockdowns and go back to work because they are immune and cannot infect others.

Why charge students massive $$money$$ for a new, New and rewritten Calculus book each year? Print out new group of math problems for homework purposes on cheap newsprint, maybe, but why the massive attack on their pocketbooks. It gets even sillier when teachers insist on selling their own textbooks(!).

#5  Digital means poor kids will need computers and bandwidth but actual schools and teachers, well bullying goes away an d the best teachers can have students from any number of districts. The poor urban schools excuse will no longer apply in a decade or so.

Of course this means it might be easier to brainwash the masses.
