Yes, I know you paid your HOA fee Bob but..... blowee, blowee!
[Independent] A police officer in Las Vegas shot a 93-year-old man for shooting a maintenance worker after complaining about water damage in his apartment.

Surveillance footage from inside an apartment building office shows Robert Thomas wearing a black coat and wide-brimmed black hat as he points a pistol at a man seated at a desk.

Mr Thomas fires a round, sending the man stumbling to the ground. Mr Thomas then stands above the man, points his gun and shoots a second time.

The Vista Del Valley apartment resident was reportedly angry with management for the flooding in his apartment and threatened staff inside the building's office on 2 January.

Body-worn camera footage shows Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Officer Ronald Hornyak running to the building with his gun drawn.

#2  I hear a lot of horror stories about condo maintenance down here. Some of these places take anywhere from $600-$2000 a month and are completely unresponsive to fixing even the smallest problems. And don't even think of going around them at your own expense. I'm glad to be a standalone home owner contracting my own maintenance according to my budget and my needs.

Three rescued after getting stuck atop San Diego border wall
Walls work? Who knew?
[10 News] Three people were rescued from atop the border wall in San Diego Sunday evening, Border Patrol said Tuesday. According to a news release, agents spotted three people perched on top of the wall near Otay Mesa around midnight January 5.

A man and two women reportedly tried to enter the U.S. illegally by climbing the wall amid dense fog. "The trio became stuck at the top of the wet, slippery wall after smugglers abandoned them," the agency said.

Border Patrol says all three people, a 36-year-old man, 20-year-old woman and 18-year-old woman, were Mexican Nationals.

All three were taken to a Border Patrol station for processing.

U.S. Hits Lowest Trade Deficit in Three Years After Decrease in Chinese Imports
[WSJ via LI] The Commerce Department announced today that the U.S. has hit its lowest trade deficit in three years with a decline in imports from China.

From The Wall Street Journal:
The foreign-trade gap in goods and services contracted 8.2% from the prior month to a seasonally adjusted $43.09 billion in November, the department said.

That was the lowest goods and services deficit since it hit $42 billion in October 2016.

Exports boost GDP while imports reduce it, and Tuesday’s report suggests trade is likely to make a large positive contribution to economic growth in the fourth quarter, after proving a mild drag in the third quarter. Net exports subtracted 0.14 percentage point from the third quarter’s 2.1% GDP growth rate, compared with a 0.68 percentage point drag in the second quarter.

"Over the past year we’ve seen trade being a small drag on the economy" due to weak global growth and the trade war, said Andrew Hunter, an economist at Capital Economics. "It looks like that drag’s starting to fade" as global activity picks up and trade tensions with China ease.
The U.S. saw its deficit with China go down "$2.2 billion in November to $25.6 billion owing a $1.4 billion increase in exports and an $800 million decline in imports."

Tariffs on Chinese goods like clothing and electronics went into effect in September.

The export numbers increased by 0.7% in November, which included "consumer goods and capital goods like oil-field equipment." The auto industry saw more vehicle exports after the United Auto Workers union ended its strike at General Motors.

Reports suggest President Donald Trump and China will sign a new trade deal in late January. The Senate has signaled it might sign the newest NAFTA deal later this week.

Indian court orders 2012 Delhi bus rapists to be hanged on Jan 22
[DAWN] An Indian court Tuesday ordered the execution on January 22 of four men convicted of the infamous 2012 gang rape and murder of a Delhi university student.

Six people were originally charged with taking part in the brutal attack aboard a city bus, but one was released after a brief detention as a juvenile, while another did away with himself while awaiting trial.

On Tuesday Delhi court judge Satish Kumar issued a warrant ordering the four on death row to be executed on January 22 at 7am.

The condemned men still have one avenue of appeal remaining, and they can also petition the Indian president for mercy.

Jyoti Singh, 23, was attacked in December 2012 while returning home after visiting the cinema with a male friend.

Her assailants took turns to rape and violate her with a metal rod as the bus drove around the capital, before dumping her and the beaten-up friend in a roadside ditch.

Singh died of her injuries nearly a fortnight after the attack ‐ in Singapore, where she had been flown for specialist treatment.

Tens of thousands of Indians erupted into the streets in protest, and the case led to a major overhaul of laws surrounding sexual assault.

It also spawned an award-winning documentary as well as a Netflix series.

Singh's family said they were pleased with the ruling.

"This judgement will reinstate women's faith in the judiciary," Jyoti's mother Asha Devi told journalists. "My daughter will finally get justice."

Chief Rabbi under fire for comments on non-Jewish immigration to Israel
[IsraelNationalNews] Israel’s Chief Sephardic Rabbi, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef, came under fire Tuesday over comments he made last week regarding non-Jewish immigrants to Israel.

Early Tuesday morning, Yediot Aharonot published a segment of a video recording it obtained which showed Rabbi Yosef speaking at a rabbinical conference last week in Jerusalem.

In the video, Rabbi Yosef laments the mass immigration of non-Jews to Israel, accusing them of backing anti-religious political agendas.

“Hundreds or tens of thousands of non-Jews came to Israel because of the law defining who is a Jew,” said Rabbi Yosef, referring to Israel’s amended Law of Return, which permits not only Jews, but non-Jewish spouses, children, and grandchildren of Jews, along with their spouses, to immigrate to Israel.

According to Israel’s Central Bureau of Statistics, more than 430,000 people living in Israel are neither Jewish nor Arab, with the vast majority being non-Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe who immigrated to Israel after 1989 under the Law of Return.

“There are many, many non-Jews here, and some of them are Communists, enemies of the faith, haters of religion,” Rabbi Yosef continued.

“They aren’t Jewish at all, they are non-Jews. And they vote for parties which incite against haredim and against the faith.”

“They were brought here to Israel so as to serve as a counter-balance against the haredim. So that in elections there won’t be too many haredim. That’s why they total non-Jews were allowed to immigrate to Israel – absolute non-Jews. Unfortunately, we are seeing the result of the incitement they make.”

Rabbi Yosef noted that many of the non-Jewish immigrants identify as Christians and “go to church every Sunday.”

Later Tuesday morning, Rabbi Yosef came under fire for his remarks, with calls for his removal.

“Chief Rabbi Yosef needs to be fired this morning,” said Uri Keidar, CEO of the Israel Hofsheet: Be Free Israel organization, a self-described “socially pluralistic” movement looking to alter the religious status quo in Israel, including the promotion of civil marriage.

Keidar accused Rabbi Yosef of “racism” for his comments on non-Jewish immigration.

“Someone who forgets that his role is to serve the public, not to grade it, doesn’t need to be getting a salary from the State of Israel. More than a million who Israelis came here from the former Soviet Union don’t need to hear the racist opinions of Rabbi Yosef again and again. He is invited to be a racist in his house, but not as a public servant. The State of Israel will get by with only one Chief Rabbi,” continued Keidar.

Blue and White MK Yair Lapid also castigated Rabbi Yosef for his comments, and demanded he apologize.

“What happened to the Judaism that was welcoming, rather than peddling in insults? The Chief Rabbi needs to apologize for his embarrassing and serious comments.”

MK Avidgor Liberman, chairman of the Yisrael Beytenu party, which receives much of its support from immigrants from Eastern Europe, called for the Chief Rabbi’s suspension.

“Just a few days ago, the Chief Rabbi of Israel mocked the secular public, when he advised them to go to Ashdod and to eat pork. And today he’s inciting against immigrants from the former Soviet Union who work, serve in the army, do reserve duty, pay taxes, and contribute to the State.”

Liberman went on to accuse Rabbi Yosef of “racism and anti-Semitism for its own sake”.

“We demand his immediate suspension from his position, and we will work so that in the near future a rabbi from the Religious Zionist movement will be chosen, someone who knows how to be inclusive and not to divide.”

Haliburton Earthmoving, Inc (TM) Strikes Again
[WashingtonTimes] (via Insty) The region near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant was hit by an earthquake early Wednesday.

The 4.9 magnitude temblor struck about 6 miles southeast of Borazjan and 40 miles from the site tied to Iran’s controversial nuclear program.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake began about six miles below the surface, which suggests a natural event unconnected to a tumultuous day in Iran.

#4  ^ A blastwave from a 14,000 Kg GBU-57 MOP or even an 8000 Kg 43 is theorized to produce localized seismic activity if it sets off at sufficient depth in an earthquake prone zone.

An 8,000 kg MOAB produced a tremor effect calculable to 4.6 on the Richter scale, in an even radius, but it doesn't dissipate like a quake, the falloff to zero is so tight, a seismograph reading is difficult. The Richter value has to be extrapolated from the amount of energy released. The 14,000 Kg MOP, your GBU 57A produces 46 Gigajoules of blast after penetrating 50-60 ft of reinforced concrete. That is just too much blast in a confined space.
Posted by: Dron66046 || 01/08/2020 4:55 Comments || Top||

#5  Such an 'event' might trigger natural tectonic activity if the occurrence area was prone to such, Dron.

Seismograph would record the whole thing, with the initial 'P' waves being of very short duration (single blast and all that) and the subsequent 'S' and 'Surface' waves registering as a normal earthquake due to the local geology shifting.

CNN settles Nick Sandmann defamation lawsuit in Covington Catholic High School controversy
More on yesterday’s story.
[FoxNews] CNN on Tuesday settled a defamation lawsuit filed by Covington Catholic High School student Nick Sandmann over its botched coverage of a viral confrontation with a Native American elder that had portrayed the Kentucky teen as the aggressor.

Fox 19 first reported that CNN settled with Sandmann for an undisclosed amount. The $250 million defamation suit sought damages for the "emotional distress Nicholas and his family suffered" in the fallout of the network's reporting.

A lawyer for Sandmann declined to comment on the settlement but confirmed to Fox News that lawsuits against The Washington Post and NBC were ongoing. Fox 19 also reported that Sandmann attorney L. Lin Wood told the judge they planned to sue media company Gannett, the publisher of the Cincinnati Enquirer among other newspapers, within 60 days. Gannett did not immediately comment either.

Last March, Sandmann's attorneys filed a suit against CNN for its coverage of the incident before all the facts had surfaced. The teen was seeking a whopping $800 million in damages from all three news outlets.

Sandmann was swept up in a controversy after a video clip depicted the "MAGA" hat-wearing student smiling at Nathan Phillips beating a drum and singing a chant as he was surrounded by Sandmann's peers, who all had joined in on the chant in front of the steps of the Lincoln Memorial.

However, several mainstream media outlets, including CNN, portrayed the incident with Sandmann and the other teens as being racially charged before it was discovered by additional footage that a group of Black Hebrew Israelites had provoked the confrontation by slinging racial slurs at the students as they were waiting for their bus following last year's March For Life event in Washington D.C. Footage then showed Phillips, who was in town for the Indigenous Peoples March, approaching the students amid the rising tension between the two groups.

Neither CNN nor NBC commented; a Post spokesperson previously said, "While we do not accept the characterizations and contentions regarding our reporting of the incident at the Lincoln Memorial, we have taken steps to address the concerns expressed to us. The full story did not emerge all at once and throughout our coverage, we sought to produce accurate reports. Even the comments of the school and church officials changed, and The Post provided ongoing coverage of the conflicting versions of this event and its aftermath, giving prominent attention to the student’s account and the investigative findings supporting it. We thus have provided a fair and accurate historical record of how this incident unfolded."

New Survey of Media Executives Shows Dire Views About Industry's Future
Nothing like that second cup of coffee whilst reading about the decline of one of the left's strongholds.
[Variety, via Drudge] - Change or Die: 50% of Media and Entertainment Execs Say They Can’t Rely on Old Biz Models, Survey Finds

With media and entertainment sectors continuing to be whipped by winds of digital disruption, many industry execs believe they need to change the ways they’ve done business ‐ or see their companies perish.

About 50% of M&E executives said their company cannot rely on traditional business models to survive the shifting landscapes, according to a new survey by consulting and professional services firm EY. Indeed, 34% of those surveyed indicated that their company will no longer exist in five years unless their business undergoes reinvention.

The survey identified three key factors driving change across M&E industry subsectors: responding to a new competitive landscape; struggling to keep pace with technology as businesses evaluate digital innovations, such as artificial intelligence and 5G; and dealing with challenges associated with changing customer expectations. Nearly two-thirds (63%) of execs embarking on change say optimizing the operating model will be truly transformational ‐ but at the same time, 28% said they don’t know what steps to prioritize in pursuing such a strategy, according to the EY survey.
