Suspect who plugged Ermias Joseph Asghedom, aka 'Nipsey Hussle' arrested
[Chicago Sun Times] Police on Tuesday arrested the man suspected of fatally shooting rapper Nipsey Hussle, authorities said.

Eric Holder, 29, had been on the run for two days before he was captured in Bellflower, a Los Angeles-area city about 20 miles southeast of where Hussle was gunned down two days earlier.

Hussle and Holder knew each other, and the two had some kind of personal dispute in the hours before the rapper was killed outside his Los Angeles clothing store, Police Chief Michel Moore said.

Police released Holder’s name and photo Monday night and asked for public’s help in finding him.

It was not immediately clear how authorities located the suspect. He was detained first by sheriff’s deputies until LA police arrived and confirmed that he was wanted in Hussle’s slaying, authorities said.

The two men had several arguments on Sunday, and Holder returned to the store with a handgun and opened fire on Hussle and two other men, who survived the shooting, police said.

Dismembered remains of a horse found in Missouri park
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ‐ Animal control officers in Kansas City, Missouri, are investigating how the dismembered remains of a horse ended up in a city park.

A man playing disc golf found the remains Monday evening in Kessler Park.

Police spokesman Capt. Tim Hernandez says the horse appeared to have been prepared for consumption. After the meat was removed, the carcass was placed in a barrel and dumped in the park.

The horse’s head, hooves, legs, entrails, ribs and lungs were scattered in the area. Hernandez said in a news release that a veterinarian will determine the time and cause of the horse’s death.

Animal control will lead the investigation unless it is determined the horse was stolen.

Beloit College Cancels Conservative Speaker's Lecture After Protests
[ET] School administrators at Beloit College, a private liberal arts schools in southern Wisconsin, canceled a lecture by a conservative speaker after student protesters disrupted the event last week.

Protestors banged drums and built a barricade of chairs on the stage where Erik Prince, a former Navy SEAL officer and founder of the security company Blackwater, was set to speak. Prince’s appearance was to be hosted by Young Americans for Freedom (YAF), a conservative student organization.

On March 27, the day of the protest, the school announced in the evening that the event was canceled. The incident was the latest in a mounting list of conservative speakers who have had their events scrapped over protests, prompting concerns of free speech on college campuses.

Prince later spoke at a hotel and said that his free-speech rights had been violated, according to the Beloit Daily News.

Britain
European Union's chief negotiator warns no-deal Brexit more likely
[PRESSTV] Britannia is becoming more likely to crash out of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
(EU) without a proper withdrawal agreement, the bloc’s chief Brexit negotiator.

Michel Barnier said Tuesday that recent developments in the British parliament with regards to Prime Minister Theresa May’s divorce deal were paving the way for a no-deal scenario.

"Over the last days a no-deal scenario has become more likely, but we can still hope to avoid it," Barnier said at an event in Brussels.

The EU official said London had three choices before the April 12 leaving date: a no-deal Brexit, staying the EU’s customs union or maintaining a special relationship with the bloc similar to Norway.

"The UK should now indicate the way forward or indicate a plan," Barnier said. "More today than ever."

The remarks came after politicians in the UK’s House of Commons failed to approve an alternative plan to May’s divorce deal, which has been voted down three times.

Guaido to mobilise opposition for ‘Operation Freedom’
[ALMASDARNEWS] Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido called for a nationwide mobilisation on April 6 as part of ’Operation Freedom’, in a speech to students at Andres Bello University in Caracas on Monday.

The self-proclaimed interim president of Venezuela made the comments as the country faces repeated blackouts and water shortages.

"We will not get used to the tragedy, we will not get used to electricity rationing, we will not get used to the lack of water," said Guaido.

"We unite more...we go out into the streets more," added Guiado.

The speech came on the first anniversary of Frente Amplio Venezuela Libre, a coalition of opposition parties dedicated to "restoring democracy" in the country.

Pence calls on Venezuela to release Citgo executives
[ELUNIVERSAL] The vice president of the United States, Mike Pence, urged the Government of Nicolás Maduro on Tuesday to immediately release six US oil executives who have been imprisoned in the South American country for more than a year without being prosecuted.

The prisoners - one US citizen and the other permanent resident - are being "illegally detained" by President Nicolás Maduro, denounced Pence, reported AP.

However,
it's easy to be generous with someone else's money...
he admitted that it is unlikely that they will be released until Maduro is no longer in power.

Pence made his comments when meeting in the White House with relatives of the prisoners, who worked for Citgo, the US subsidiary of Petróleos de Venezuela (Pdvsa). They were tossed in the slammer
Drop the heater, Studs, or you're hist'try!
in November 2017 and charged with embezzlement, allegedly being summoned to Caracas for a last-minute meeting.

The United States and more than fifty countries do not recognize Maduro's government because they consider that the last presidential elections were plagued with fraud. Instead they recognize the opposition Juan Guaidó, president of the National Assembly, as the president in charge of the country.

Chinese woman carrying malware allegedly got into Mar-a-Lago
[APNEWS] A woman carrying two Chinese passports and a device containing computer malware lied to Secret Service agents and briefly gained admission to President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
’s Mar-a-Lago club over the weekend during his Florida visit, federal prosecutors allege in court documents.

Yujing Zhang, 32, approached a Secret Service agent at a checkpoint outside the Palm Beach club early Saturday afternoon and said she was a member who wanted to use the pool, court documents said. She showed the passports as identification.

Agents say she wasn’t on the membership list, but a club manager thought Zhang was the daughter of a member. Agents say that when they asked Zhang if the member was her father, she did not answer definitively but they thought it might be a language barrier and admitted her.

Zhang’s story changed when she got inside, agents say, telling a front desk receptionist she was there to attend the United Nations
...a formerly good idea gone bad...
Chinese American Association event scheduled for that evening. No such event was scheduled and agents were summoned.

Agent Samuel Ivanovich wrote in court documents that Zhang told him that she was there for the Chinese American event and had come early to familiarize herself with the club and take photos, again contradicting what she had said at the checkpoint. She showed him an invitation in Chinese that he could not read.

He said Zhang was taken off the grounds and told she could not be there. Ivanovich said she became argumentative, so she was taken to the local Secret Service office for questioning.

There, he said, it became clear Zhang speaks and reads English well. He said Zhang said she had traveled from Shanghai to attend the nonexistent Mar-a-Lago event on the invitation of an acquaintance named "Charles," whom she only knew through a Chinese social media app. Ivanovich said she then denied telling the checkpoint agents she was a member wanting to swim.

Ivanovich said Zhang carried four cellphones, a laptop computer, an external hard drive and a thumb drive containing computer malware. She did not have a swimsuit.

Zhang is charged with making false statements to federal agents and illegally entering a restricted area. She remains in jug pending a hearing next week. Her public defender, Robert Adler, declined comment.

#3  That's a tough entry, I've been on the Palm Beach island during his residency.

First filter is the City Police for ID and traffic control on the access road.
Second filter is the Sheriff's Dept for a vehicle search before the entry gate.
Third filter at the entry gate is the SS for a bomb and weapons check.
Each filter has a comm station coordinating the pass-thrus.

I can only assume she passed the first two perimeters as a local resident sometime prior to the third.

#4  The malware is important, not the person.

The big danger is a social engineering attack that arranges for malware to be inadvertently installed on a system within an it security perimeter.

This can be as simple as persuading some person with security credentials to connect a USB drive stick to a sensitive system for a few seconds.

BTW Hillary's illicit email server did not have Secret Service protection. 'Zhang' and others could easily have gotten physical access.

Pompeo made clear U.S. is ready to proceed with N. Korea: State Dept.
[EN.YNA.CO.KR] U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has made clear that Washington is ready to engage further with North Korea, his department said Tuesday amid stalled negotiations over the North's nuclear weapons program.

At a regular press briefing, department deputy spokesperson Robert Palladino was asked whether North Korea has expressed an interest in another bilateral summit following the collapse of the previous one in February in Vietnam.

In an interview broadcast Monday, Pompeo said he is hopeful President Donald Trump
...New York real estate developer, described by Dems as illiterate, racist, misogynistic, and what ever other unpleasant descriptions they can think of, elected by the rest of us as 45th President of the United States...
and North Korean leader Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
will get together "in the coming months" to make a "substantive big step" toward denuclearizing the North.

"The secretary yesterday was basically making clear again that the United States is ready to proceed, and nothing further beyond that," Palladino said. "I wouldn't read any more into it. Our efforts are ongoing."

The Hanoi summit ended without a deal due to disagreements over the scope of North Korea's denuclearization and sanctions relief from the U.S.

Chicago elects black, gay woman as mayor in landmark vote
[Aljazeera] In a landmark vote, the US city of Chicago has elected its first black female mayor and the first openly gay person to hold the post.

Democrat Lori Lightfoot, a 56-year-old former federal prosecutor making her first run for elected office, won the Midwestern city's mayoral race on Tuesday in a lopsided victory.

She beat Toni Preckwinkle, a career politician who is also black, by a wide margin of 74 to 26 percent with most ballots counted.

"We were up against powerful interests," Lightfoot said in a victory speech, with her wife and young daughter by her side.

"Today, you did more than make history, you created a movement for change," she told a cheering crowd.

Lightfoot will replace outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel, once a rising star in the Democratic Party and former President Barack Obama's first White House chief of staff.

Chicago will become the largest US city to have a black woman serve as mayor when Lightfoot is sworn in on May 20.

She will join seven other black women currently serving as mayors in major US cities, including Atlanta and New Orleans, and will be the second woman as well as the third African American to lead Chicago.

Women-only bus service to hit roads on Thursday
[DAWN] PESHAWAR: After a yearlong delay, the women-only pink bus service will hit the roads in Mardan district on Thursday (April 4).

Officials in the TransBeautiful Downtown Peshawar
...capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa administrative and economic hub for the Federally Administered Tribal Areas of Pakistan. Peshawar is situated near the eastern end of the Khyber Pass, convenient to the Pak-Afghan border. Peshawar has evolved into one of Pakistan's most ethnically and linguistically diverse cities, which means lots of gunfire.
Company, operator of the Peshawar’s Bus Rapid Transit project which has been tasked to run the pink buses, confirmed that they had awarded a contract to a company and all details had been finalised in that regard.

"We are preparing to inaugurate the project on April 4 in Mardan," an official said.

He said that process to select operator for Abbottabad
... A pleasant city located only 30 convenient miles from Islamabad. The city is noted for its nice weather and good schools. It is the site of Pakistain's military academy, which was within comfortable walking distance of the residence of the late Osama bin Laden....
was also in final stages and that they were optimistic that the same company which had been awarded contract for pink buses in Mardan would get the contract.

Another source told Dawn that launch of Abbottabad bus service was also in the process and was likely to be finalised by the end of the current month.

The source said that the launch of the project in the Mardan district would be a milestone towards facilitating the female population, which lacked decent transportation facilities.

Islamabad High Court forms commission to probe alleged forced conversion of Ghotki girls
[DAWN] The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday, while hearing a petition filed by two Ghotki sisters who were allegedly forcibly converted from Hinduism and married to Moslem men, constituted a five-member commission to probe whether the girls' conversion was actually forced and to determine whether or not they were underage at the time of their marriages.

The court named renowned Islamic scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani as the fifth member of the commission which includes four people who were earlier appointed as amicus curiae to assist the court; they include Human Rights Minister Dr Shireen Mazari, Human Rights Commission of Pakistain Chairperson Dr Mehdi Hasan, National Commission on the Status of Women Chairperson Khawar Mumtaz and veteran journalist and human rights
...which are usually open to widely divergent definitions...
activist I.A. Rehman.

The petition, filed by the girls and the two men they were married to, had sought protection against possible adverse action by the government. It stated that the girls left their home on March 20. On March 22, after announcing that they had willingly converted, the girls sought legal help.

According to the petition, the two girls were born in a Hindu family and converted because they were "impressed by Islamic teachings". It claimed that they did not inform their family because of threats to their lives.

IHC Chief Justice Athar Minallah today also ordered that a medical board be constituted to determine the age of the girls.

A medical report prepared by the Pakistain Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims), based on a bone test of the two girls, stated that they were not minors at the time of their marriages to the Moslem men.

The Pims report was dismissed by the family of the two girls as well as PML-N MNA Dr Darshan, who belongs to the Hindu minority. Dr Darshan said that only an independent medical board could determine the age of the girls.

Justice Minallah stated that he had received the report but would not comment on its findings.

The medical board was asked to submit a report at the next hearing of the petition.

On Monday, the girls' father had also filed a petition in the IHC, requesting the court to constitute a medical board "for determination of the exact age" of the two sisters.

The petition also sought directions for the government to "conduct psychological test ... to ascertain their mental capability/state of mind and for diagnosis of Stockholm syndrome".

Stockholm syndrome has been defined as the "feeling of trust or affection felt in many cases of kidnapping or hostage-taking by a victim towards a captor".

During the hearing on Tuesday, the court expressed displeasure over what it said was the "lethargic attitude" of the federal and provincial governments as neither the interior secretary nor the chief secretary of the Sindh government had appeared before the IHC despite prior notices.

On March 26, the IHC had ordered the state to take over custody of the girls and ensure their safety until their case is decided.

The hearing of the case has been adjourned till April 11.

Catholic priests burn Harry Potter books in Poland
[IMAGES.DAWN] Catholic priests in Poland burned books they say are sacrilegious this weekend, including tomes from British author J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series of fantasy novels.
Shame. Simply shame. On Poland, on the Church.
"We obey the Word," priests said in a Facebook post showing photographs of the public book burning and quoting Biblical passages from the book of Deuteronomy in the Old Testament.
Having read all the Harry Potter books and seen all the movies, I saw the triumph of Good over Evil. What'd they see?
One passage exhorting believers to destroy the enemies of God includes the command to "burn their idols in the fire".
Books are not "idols." Novels are "entertainment." "Idols" are the things the Paleostinians of those days (called Philistines) sacrificed their firstborn children to.
The post, on a page run by the Catholic "SMS from Heaven" evangelical group, stirred controversy and has gone viral.
Since they deserve the condemnation and mockery of the civilized world, I'd say that's a good thing.
Photographs show three priests carrying a basket of books and other items, including an African-styled face mask through a church to an outside fire pit.
An African styled face mask? Like witch doctors use? Did they check and see if it works first?
Priests are seen saying prayers over the fire pit where other items, including a book from the Twilight vampire-themed fantasy romance series, a ’Hello Kitty’ umbrella and a Hindu religious figurine, are also burning.
Even "Hello, Kitty?" I'm surprised they weren't all turned into pillars of salt on the spot. That's some dangerous juju they're messing with!
Father Jan Kucharski, the priest in the Gdansk parish where the book burning took place, told the natemat.pl news website on Monday that they had burned items "linked to the occult and magic." "Aside from the books, there were talismans and amulets. Parishioners brought them to put things in order" as part of spring cleaning, added the priest, who is also listed as an exorcist on the Gdansk diocese official website.
"Honey, why don't you take this Hindoo idol we've had on the mantel all these years down to the church so they can burn it?"
"No! You take it!"
"Not me! I ain't touching it!"
"Oh, all right!"
[ZAP!]

The burning took place in front of his church after Sunday mass.
Having it right after mass somehow makes it even worse.
Kucharczyk dismissed comparisons to the cultural censorship of totalitarian regimes like Nazi Germany.
"I reject your comparisons!"
"How're they different?"
"I reject your comparisons!"

#1  See, they did see the triumph of Good over Evil in Harry Potter. What you failed to note is that the Catholic Church, which is an evil organization itself, felt challenged by this, and desired nothing more than a desire to fight it in the name of their God. As for the rest... well, I think my feelings are clear. The Catholic Church would rather rape children and avoid the "question" of condemning abortion and support broad book burnings rather than actually do anything remotely useful. Evil, pure and simple.

#10  From Al Ahram today:

On Wednesday Father Rafal Jaroszewicz, one of the three priests involved, posted on the same Facebook page that he was "very sorry".

"The fact of burning books and other objects was unfortunate," he wrote.

"However, it was not irreverent to any social group or religion, nor was it aimed at books as such or culture."

The offending post -- which included photographs showing two altar boys standing over the fire pit as Jaroszewicz prayed over the "occult" items -- had been deleted, he added.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Trump's Border Closure Would Devastate Texas, Maybe Some Others
[Dallas News] -- Experts and business leaders pull no punches in describing the damage a U.S.-Mexico border closure would inflict on the economy, using words like "catastrophic," "disaster" and "havoc."
Anybody suggest $5.7 billion to build the wall would've been a better deal?
Well over $1 billion in trade crosses the U.S.-Mexico line every day, according to the U.S. government. The cross-border commerce also supports more than 4.5 million American jobs, according to a study prepared for the Business Roundtable.
Any word on the impact to Mexico? Perhaps they might re-think their we-don't-let-the-Gringos-tell-us-what-to-do approach?
Even a partial shutdown of the border by President Donald Trump - some bridges closed, far fewer agents performing inspections, leading to more hours-long waits to cross - can have a biting effect on the economy and everyday life along the border.
Or, like a lot of the-sky-is-falling predictions, maybe it'll only be a little bit, or for a little while.
Already frustrated by Trump’s tariffs, which have prompted retaliatory levies from Mexico and other countries, the business community in Texas and beyond is now bracing for things to get worse.
I thought the tariffs issue was resolved? Did the MSM cover that?
Trump has said he’d close the border as soon as this week in response to what he sees as a failure by Mexican authorities to stop waves of Central American migrants from crossing into the U.S. Apprehensions at the border have reached a 12-year high, and many of the detained are families and children.
All of whom have been suckered into the journey by the Dems and the Media.
The migrants have the legal right to request asylum once in the U.S.. But they’re overwhelming shelters and, the government says, putting a strain on the Border Patrol.
The Border Patrol says it too, not just the Orange Man Bad. But the media, apparently, disagrees.

Following many examples of imminent catastrophe, the News allows -
In short, the system unravels without Mexico’s participation. Substantial layoffs and slowed economic growth would be all but certain if a shutdown were to last very long, experts said.
Might be a pretty big if. Ask China.
The only near equivalent to what Trump is proposing came in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, when ongoing security concerns prompted President George W. Bush’s administration to order 100 percent inspections at ports of entry. The effort turned into a quagmire, effectively shutting down the border with massive lines.
Silly Bush!
Margie Fuentes, 31, was going to have dinner with a friend from across the border this week, but when she checked an app and saw that pedestrian lines were about three hours long, said, "I'm thinking breakfast or lunch may be better."

"This is insane," she added. "People don't understand that we're really one city."

And, in a sense, one economy, too.
But not one nation. Anybody want to think about that wall yet?

#1  This seems more delusional than anything else. The Mexicans would be hurt harder than we would. The majority of imported US goods come from overseas or Canada, not Mexico. And frankly, economic consequences must be considered only in tandem with national security consequences. I would rather shut the border and have a temporary local economic contraction than permanently open the border to these invaders.

#6  Odysseus or Ulysses the legendary Greek king of Ithaca and our current Washington 'elite' have much in common. Odysseus could not conquer Troy with conventional siege tactics so he build a wooden horse.

The Trojan Horse is a story from the Trojan War about the subterfuge that the Greeks used to enter the independent city of Troy and win the war. In the canonical version, after a fruitless 10-year siege, the Greeks constructed a huge wooden horse, and hid a select force of men inside including Odysseus. The Greeks pretended to sail away, and the Trojans pulled the horse into their city as a victory trophy. That night the Greek force crept out of the horse and opened the gates for the rest of the Greek army, which had sailed back under cover of night. The Greeks entered and destroyed the city of Troy, ending the war. Wiki

#11  sonny g

just having a border crossing can be either good or bad for a city

In the 90s after NAFTA, the Mex-US trade grew rapidly and the one border crossing in downtown Laredo started having enormous back ups which actually became a barrier to commerce. In the late 90s a new crossing west of town was opened which handled freight exclusively. The back ups in downtown ended and Laredo's employment grew faster than the US as a whole or Texas as a whole.

In a sense this ended up working too well because by late 2018 many, many Mexicans were crossing into Laredo each day for daytime jobs.
