[Miami Herald] Zhao Qianli says he’s a musicology student from China who traveled to the United States for a summer exchange program. After he finished his studies in September, he booked a flight to Miami and then headed for Key West.
But rather than see the Hemingway House and other sights, Qianli got caught by Key West police for trespassing onto the high-security Naval Air Station. He later told federal authorities that he lost his way on the tourist trail and did not realize it was a military base.
Investigators found photos and videos on Qianli’s smartphone as well as on his digital camera that he had taken of government buildings and a Defense Department antenna field on the military base.
Qianli, 20, who is being held in Monroe County Jail, pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of photographing defense installations at the Key West military facility and was sentenced to one year in prison by U.S. District Judge K. Michael Moore. The judge gave him the maximum sentence, which was higher than the sentencing guidelines between zero and six months. The U.S. attorney’s office sought nine months in prison.

Back in 2012, due to insomnia and jet lag, I found myself wandering around Tienanmen Square at 6am, where there were about 200 soldiers/police in a rectangular formation resolutely standing off maybe 2,000 protesters. I have no idea what they were protesting about. I instinctively started taking pictures, then put my camera away after 5 seconds or so after realizing they probably had 10 more cameras on me, than I did on them, and skulked away. Some things are just none of your d*mn business. I don't know what that was, but it struck me as one of those things.
So, yeah, #1, don't do that in China. I took a few innocent/instinctive pix and was scared to death for the rest of my visit. When you are a guest in a foreign country, be a good guest.

And yes, #3, it's a good bet those pictures were transmitted to China before the spy was caught.
Might wanna rethink our visa policies with regard to Chinese "tourists"...or Chinese in general for that matter.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ‐ The man piloting a small plane that broke apart over a Southern California neighborhood had false credentials identifying him as a retired Chicago police officer, authorities said Tuesday.
Antonio Pastini was killed when the twin-engine plane broke up shortly after takeoff and fell in pieces in Yorba Linda, igniting a fire in a home where four people died on Sunday. The cause of the crash has not been determined.
Pastini, 75, was initially identified as a retired officer but Chicago police said there were no records of him working for the department.
The credentials found at the crash site included false retirement papers and a police badge bearing the same number as a badge reported lost in 1978, Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in an email to The Associated Press.
Orange County sheriff’s spokeswoman Carrie Braun said the credentials were not legitimate but the pilot was indeed Pastini. The victims inside the home have yet to be publicly identified.
Pastini’s daughter, Julia Ackley, said her father’s birth name was Jordan Isaacson, but she didn’t say why he changed it. She wouldn’t address the police credentials.
"I’d prefer not to comment, and let the investigators do their job," Ackley told KABC-TV. "My father is exactly who he said he was."

Per FAA records, Mr. Pastini was a Commercial rated pilot and an "Advanced" Ground Instructor.
The document and name thingies seem to negate the "of good character" part of his Commercial rating, but I'm more likely to believe it's more a "Stolen Valor" kind of issue than a "hit."
Note the Angel Flight West logo on the tail. Unless Mr. Pastini had some s.e.r.i.o.u.s. SGO, I doubt someone with nefarious ends would risk the deaths of innocent medical pax, thus enhancing the notoriety of the accident.
The FAA and NTSB are going through the records of N414RS, and everyone who got near the machine will be "interviewed."
This crash was quite "spectacular;" hits are more likely to be kept on the down-low.
[DAWN] A nurse accused of raping and impregnating an incapacitated woman at a long-term care facility entered a not guilty plea on Tuesday at his first court appearance.
Shackled and wearing orange prison garb, Nathan Sutherland, 36, entered his plea through his attorney, David Gregan,at a hearing at Maricopa County Superior Court that lasted only minutes.
"Mr Sutherland, just as you and I are, is entitled to due process of law," Gregan told news hounds after the hearing.
"Mr Sutherland is entitled to constitutional protection just as you and I are. And, finally, Mr. Sutherland, just as you and I are, is entitled to a full defense," he added.
"I intend to make sure he receives all these things."

I quit! last month after police launched an investigation into how the 29-year-old victim, who has not been identified, gave birth to a baby boy in December at a nursing care facility in Phoenix.
His DNA was matched to that of the baby, authorities said.
Sutherland's attorney said after the arrest that there was "minimum evidence" against his client and that he intended to have a separate DNA test carried out.
Staff at the health care facility ‐ Hacienda HealthCare ‐ have said they did not know the female patient was pregnant until she gave birth on December 29.
Authorities describe the woman in court documents as "not alert" and needing maximum care.
Sutherland, who had been working at the facility since 2012, was her primary nurse at the time of the assault. He was fired after his arrest and the victim was removed from Hacienda.
The baby is being cared for by the woman's relatives who are members of the Apache tribe.
Sutherland, who is being held on $500,000 bail, is next scheduled to appear in court on March 19.

[NYPOST] A woman was slashed in the face with a razorblade in broad daylight in Williamsburg and left with a gash that required 44 stitches.
Dana Sagona, 31, was waiting for a Lyft from her friend’s place near Boerum and White Street Sunday at around 7:45 a.m. when a man approached her.
"You pretty. Are you scared?" he asked her, according to police sources.
Sagona, a librarian at the New York Public Library, said "no" ‐ and that’s when the creep grabbed her.
"I thought it was going to be a rape because he didn’t ask me for anything by that point, he was just grabbing me," Sagona told The Post on Monday.
The man and Sagona struggled over her purse for about 30 seconds.
"I will kill you," he growled, before slashing her left cheek and punching her so hard she fell to the ground.
The Sunnyside resident said she didn’t realize she’d been cut until she saw blood.
"The blood was gushing, it was pooling in my scarf," Sagona said. "When I saw how big it was, I was shocked. I’m still in shock at the size," she added about the gash.
The attacker ran off with Sagona’s purse containing her phone, keys, credit cards and a $130 MetroCard, sources said.
After the attack, Sagona tried flagging down an Uber but it wouldn’t stop. A man walked out of his house shortly after and called 911.
She was treated at Woodhull Medical Center.
"Enough is enough with bad things that have been happening to me," said Sagona, who lost her fiancé to cancer in October 2017.
The Long Island native, who moved to the Big Apple in 2013, said she’s vigilant when walking down city streets.
"I definitely have always feared something like this," she said.
The attack is still under investigation.

In a statement, Vancouver-based QuadrigaCX said it is seeking creditor protection after weeks of attempting to "locate and secure our very significant cryptocurrency reserves" following the death of its president Gerald Cotten.
The Nova Scotia Supreme Court was to consider the application made by his widow Jennifer Robertson on behalf of the company.
Quadriga CX announced mid-January that Cotten died of complications from Crohn's disease on December 9 while volunteering at an orphanage in India. He was 30.
In an affidavit cited by Canadian media, Robertson said the company has been unable to access on its main computer the cryptocurrencies owed to 115,000 users.

[ELUNIVERSAL] Uruguay blocked a million-dollar transfer of Venezuelan assets that the government of Nicolás Maduro tried to carry out to that country from the Novo Banco de Portugal, assured on Tuesday the deputy Carlos Paparoni.
The "transaction could be stopped, until now, thus protecting the resources of all Venezuelans, preventing them from being stolen," the politician added during a regular session of the National Assembly (AN).
Paparoni indicated that Maduro tried to transfer almost 1.2 billion dollars to the offices in Uruguay of the República and Bandes banks.
He noted that the Central Bank of Uruguay blocked the transfer and said that the institution will decide in the next few hours to report on the decision.

WASHINGTON (AP) ‐ President Donald Trump said Tuesday that he will hold a two-day summit with North Korea leader Kim Jong Un Feb. 27-28 in Vietnam to continue his efforts to persuade Kim to give up his nuclear weapons.
Trump has said his outreach to Kim and their first meeting last June in Singapore opened a path to peace. But there is not yet a concrete plan for how denuclearization could be implemented.
Denuclearizing North Korea is something that has eluded the U.S. for more than two decades, since it was first learned that North Korea was close to acquiring the means for nuclear weapons.
"As part of a bold new diplomacy, we continue our historic push for peace on the Korean Peninsula," Trump said in his State of the Union address.
Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told Congress last week that U.S. intelligence officials do not believe Kim will eliminate his nuclear weapons or the capacity to build more because he believes they are key to the survival of the regime. Satellite video taken since the June summit has indicated North Korea is continuing to produce nuclear materials at its weapons factories.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ‐ Australia has cancelled the residency of a wealthy Chinese property developer and political donor, but the foreign minister said she doesn’t expect Beijing to protest.
Media reported on Wednesday that Australian officials have denied Sydney resident Huang Xiangmo a passport, leaving him stranded in Beijing.
Huang was born in southern China but moved to Sydney in 2011. He reportedly was told his application to become an Australian citizen had been turned down and permanent residency cancelled. His exact whereabouts were uncertain.
Foreign Minister Marise Payne confirmed a "high-profile individual from Beijing" had lost his Australian residency. She and the Homes Affairs Department declined to identify the person or detail the circumstances, citing privacy reasons.
Payne told Australian Broadcasting Corp. she did not expect China would raise the issue in bilateral discussions.
[Al Ahram] French MPs on Tuesday approved an anti-rioting bill giving security forces the power to ban suspected hooligans from demonstrating, in a controversial bid to crack down on violence that has marred "yellow vest" protests over the last three months.
Opponents say the bill, approved by the lower house of parliament by 387 votes to 87, contravenes the constitutional right to demonstrate.
Under its most contentious provision, government officials would be able to ban people suspected of being hooligans from taking part in demonstrations -- without oversight from a judge.
Inspired by legislation used to crack down on football hooligans, the new law calls for a six-month prison sentence and a 7,500 euro ($8,500) fine for violators.

[IncendiaryNewsService] Workers World Party (WWP) and the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL) attempted to hold a protest at the intersection of East Riverside Drive and South Pleasant Valley in Southeast Austin this past Saturday. But the area is home to revolutionary forces, the enemies of revisionists. Masked militants descended on the revisionist protestors almost immediately.
Both the WWP and PSL are nearly identical "Marcyite" revisionist organizations that trace their origin to the late American former Trotskyite and revisionist Sam Marcy who founded the WWP. Marcy’s revisionist politics defended social-imperialism and all revisionist governments.
A reader leaked information to Incendiary from a WWP chat group in the Signal app.
"Anytime PSL or Eno[ch] are involved, [the militants] are going to come. They smashed the mega[phone], tore up signs and were very intimidating," a Marcyite said in the chat.

Immediately after, a woman militant rushed forward and seized his megaphone by force. Other militants went in and confiscated PSL and WWP propaganda signs and leaflets. A woman took it from him. Noodle-armed soyboys. Eating too much soy puts estrogen in your body and makes you less masculine.

As the red-masked militants dressed in military fatigues departed in an organized manner, a WWP member from out of town began calling the militants "police" in spite of the fact that their organization’s local leader was at that very moment filing a police report against the militants. TORONTO (Reuters) - Canadian pharmaceutical industry lobby groups, in an effort to head off a planned crackdown on prescription drug prices, offered to give up C$8.6 billion ($6.6 billion) in revenue over 10 years, freeze prices or reduce the cost of treating rare diseases, according to interviews and documents seen by Reuters.
Those industry offers did not impress federal officials, coming last year as Canada prepared to expand the powers of a little-known federal watchdog called the Patented Medicine Prices Review Board (PMPRB) to reduce the cost of prescription drugs.
The government proposals would change the countries Canada compares its prices to, dropping the United States where they are highest, and set a formula to assess cost-effectiveness of medicines.

[DAWN] A day after the bodies of a mother and daughter duo were found hanging at their home in Khanewal in what police suspect is actually a double murder case, the dear departed's relatives blocked the National Highway for more than six hours on Tuesday.
The women, according to police, were allegedly strangled to death before their bodies were hung to make it seem as if they had did away with himself.
The murders occurred a day after the daughter was allegedly kidnapped and raped by a neighbour, who has since been tossed in the calaboose Book 'im, Mahmoud! by the police.
"The true facts of the case will emerge after the results of the medical report are released," said District Police Officer (DPO) Khanewal Rana Masoom.
