Swedish top court upholds Assange's detention order
[ARABNEWS] Sweden's highest court on Monday rejected WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's appeal of a pre-trial detention order in a nearly five-year-old investigation of alleged sex crimes.

The Supreme Court in Stockholm on upheld rulings by lower courts ordering the detention for Assange, saying there is no reason to rescind it as the investigation continues.

Since 2010, prosecutors have sought to interrogate Assange over allegations of rape, sexual molestation and illegal coercion made by two women after his visit to Sweden that year. Assange denies the allegations and has not been formally indicted.

Swedish prosecutors in March agreed to question Assange in London where he has been holed up in the Ecuadorean Embassy for nearly three years to avoid being extradited.

Assange's lawyers say he fears extradition to Sweden would merely be a first step in efforts to take him to the US, where WikiLeaks infuriated officials by publishing secret documents including 250,000 State Department cables.

It is not clear when the Swedish prosecutors will travel to London. They are still discussing practical details with Assange's defense lawyers, such as possible dates and who will be present for the interrogation, said Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority.

Dundalk Man Violently Beaten By Group Of Teens
A Dundalk man continues to recover after being violently beaten by a group of teenagers. Now a 17-year-old is facing attempted murder charges, a 15-year-old is charged with assault and more arrests are expected.
Dundalk is a working class suburb of Baltimore. The neighborhood the festivities occurred in is residential.
Richard Fletcher is out of the hospital, but he suffered extensive injuries. We want to warn you: some of the video and images you are about to see are very disturbing.
Video is at the link.
Horrifying cell phone video shows a group of teens surrounding 61-year-old Richard Fletcher, kicking and hitting him again and again until he drops to the ground.
Mr. Fletcher is white, which means he's a racist, of course.
He suffered broken eye sockets, a broken nose, broken ribs and a brain bleed. "He was brutally attacked," said Cpl. John Wachter, Baltimore County Police Department.
No! Really?
Investigators say Fletcher saw two girls fighting on top of his car. When he went outside to ask them to stop, dozens of teens turned on him.
The feral children didn't quite kill him, which is probably why they didn't eat him.
"He wasn't trying to intervene in their disagreement. He just wanted them to stop fighting and move away from his car," said Cpl. Wachter.
Which resulted in him being brought down by a pack of wild animals.
Now 17-year-old Antoine Lawson is charged as an adult with attempted murder. A 15-year-old girl also faces assault charges, and more arrests are expected.
The color difference is as one would expect, which is why Mr. Fletcher is racist by definition.
Neighbors say the teens go to nearby Baltimore Community High School.
I'l bet they don't go very often.
"The community in all, we're really disgusted with the actions of the students," said Georgia Bartrum, Harbor View Neighborhood Association.
Are you really? They're just kids being kids. Check yer privilege, Georgia.
Bartrum says the attack is causing fear amongst homeowners.
Well, yes. Packs of feral yoots roaming your streets and half murdering residents at random might cause a bit of unease.
"I had one lady who said she had found them in her vehicle and didn't realize they were in there--her door was open--and approached them, and she said, 'They could have done that to me,'" said Bartrum.
If you leave your car unlocked (which often appens in quiet neighborhoods) you're occasionally going to find them occupied by ferals, either yo boyz or billies. Usually they don't do much but smoke weed or shoot up, though they'll make off with GPS devices and car stereo systems if they can figure how to remove them. Our 'burb is south of Baltimore, so we get the dregs from Brooklyn coming to prey on us now and then. I shooed some out of my truck a couple years ago. We've been thinking of getting a gate.
Flyers are now being put up across the community to try and raise money for Fletcher's medical expenses. "He's got a lot of doctors visits," said Bartrum. "So he's going to have a long road to recovery."
Seems like in a reasonable world the county or the state should pick up the tab for injuries caused by feral children. It would be a drain on the taxpayer but they could probably divert the money that goes to "community centers" where the community organizers do whatever it is they do. Having to pay when a citizen gets maimed or killed would give the local government an incentive to keep the crime rate down, at least until a 22-year-old state's attorney had a half dozen or so cops arrested.
Now neighbors want more people in the video to face charges.
Cell phones make pretty good witnesses, don't they?
Police say they are actively looking for more suspects and that they do expect more arrests.
We have a county police system here in Maryland, rather than township or borough police like they have in Pennsylvania or Virginia (I think). Baltimore city police has a harder time recruiting (which recently got even harder) than Baltimore County, which is a separate enity. Their jurisdiction includes the sometimes seedy 'burbs east of the city, the more pleasant 'burbs to the west and north, and the rural area up to the Pennsylvania line. Most of them I've met have been pretty nice fellows. That might be because I've never given them occasion to thump knobs on my head.
Multiple fundraisers are now being planned for Fletcher, and more than $7,000 has been raised through a "GoFundMe" page.

China-Japan-Koreas
Despite test, North Korea still years from sub-launched missile
[ARABNEWS] North Korea made a key step in its nuclear weapons program by test-launching a ballistic missile from a submarine, but remains years away from developing a missile system or submarine which could threaten its sworn enemy the United States, experts said.

South Korea on Monday called the test "very serious and concerning" and urged Pyongyang to immediately stop developing submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), which it said hindered regional security.

Isolated North Korea, already slapped with UN sanctions for its missile and nuclear tests, is widely believed to be trying to develop a nuclear device small enough to be mounted on a ballistic missile, but it is not clear whether it has done so -- a crucial step to make its nuclear missile threat credible.

And while some North Korean submarines are technically capable of coming within range of the US mainland, they cannot necessarily carry a missile, although the North's missile-equipped submarines could reach Japanese waters.

"They need to build a new, bigger submarine," said Yang Uk, a senior research fellow at the Korea Defense and Security Forum and a policy adviser to the South Korean navy.

North Korea is technically still at war with the South after their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty, and regularly threatens the United States, the South's biggest ally, with destruction.

Economy
America's Vanishing Worker: The Truth Behind The
[Zero Hedge] The biggest paradox of the so-called US recovery is that in the same report in which the US Department of Labor reported that the US unemployment has dropped to a depression-low 5.4%, a level suggesting near zero "slack" in the labor force, the BLS also indicated that the number of people not in the labor force rose to a fresh all time high of 93.2 million, keeping the participation rate at a level first seen in 1978.

How does one make sense of this glaring contradiction and paradoxical data, which one one hand suggest the recovery is fully in place, while on the other screams depression?

For the answer we go to the WSJ's report on the curious case of America's vanishing worker.

To be sure, this "curious case" covers nothing new for regular Zero Hedge readers, but may explain to casual observers how it is possible that America's labor metrics have devolved to such a Schrodingerian state in which the US labor market is both alive and dead, depending on whose propaganda one observes.
Not too difficult to sort out, when you take into account the reported 48 million people on food stamps.
For the answer, the WSJ tracks the career, or rather lack thereof, of Denny Ryder of Decatur, Illinois, 47 years old, who is one of hundreds of thousands of (former) employees in the industrial Midwest who has been forced to move away, retire or give up on finding a job. As a result, the unemployment rate in this has fallen even as Denny is no closer to being able to provide for his family.
It's not just Decatur, the entire state is dying.
As the WSJ reports, "by one key gauge of economic health, this industrial city three hours south of Chicago is well on the way to recovery. Hit hard by the recession, when its unemployment rate topped 14%, Decatur over the past year has seen one of the swiftest declines in joblessness in the country, with the rate dropping to 7% in March from 10.2% a year earlier."

The problem: it's nothing but a statistical mirage, a lie.

Report: EU to Propose Mandatory Migrant Settlement Quotas
Kicking the can down the road until Europe is broke and the native population has been replaced.
[AnNahar] The executive body of the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
will propose that countries share responsibility for housing thousands of refugees arriving in Europe from across the Mediterranean, The Times reported on Monday.

European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker on Wednesday will propose a "mandatory migrant quota system" under which the EU's 28 member states will share responsibility for migrants during times of emergency, the British newspaper reported.

"To ensure a fair and balanced participation of all member states to this common effort... the EU needs a permanent system for sharing the responsibility for large numbers of refugees and asylum seekers among member states," the proposal reads, according to the newspaper.

The number of refugees sent to each country would be decided according to a "redistribution key" based on GDP, population size, unemployment rate and past numbers of asylum seekers, it added.

Currently, asylum seekers are the responsibility of the country in which they first arrive, meaning countries close to migrant crossing routes such as Italia, Malta and Greece have complained of shouldering the bulk of Europe's refugee crisis.

In addition, Juncker will propose the EU resettle an extra 20,000 asylum seekers identified by the United Nations
...an organization originally established to war on dictatorships which was promptly infiltrated by dictatorships and is now held in thrall to dictatorships...
per year by 2020, The Times reported.

Britannia's Home Office said the plans were unacceptable and that efforts should focus on stopping people traffickers.

"The UK has a proud history of offering asylum to those who need it most, but we do not believe that a mandatory system of resettlement is the answer," a home office front man said.

"We will oppose any EU Commission proposals to introduce a non-voluntary quota."

The report follows a meeting by EU defense ministers in La Belle France to tackle the increasing flow of migrants making the perilous sea crossing from North Africa that has seen 5,000 people die in the last 18 months.

The Times said the issue would be British Conservative leader David Cameron
... has stated that he is certainly a big Thatcher fan, but I don't know whether that makes me a Thatcherite, which means he's not. Since he is not deeply ideological he lacks core principles and is easily led. He has been described as certainly not a Pitt, Elder or Younger, but he does wear a nice suit so maybe he's Beau Brummel ...
's "first battle" of his second term as prime minister, after an election in which over 12 percent of British people voted for the anti-EU, anti-immigration UK Independence Party.

Under pressure from the eurosceptic wing of his own party, Cameron has promised to cut immigration to under 100,000 and re-negotiate the terms of Britannia's membership of the EU, before holding an in-out referendum by 2017.

In an editorial, The Times said the plans "pose a direct threat to British membership of the European Union".

"For David Cameron, now committed to a referendum on Britannia's very membership of the European Union, the timing is report laughably poor," it added.

Home Front: Culture Wars
Obama's Legacy: Urban Pathologies on Display
[PJ Media] President Obama is concerned with burnishing his legacy during this second term of his presidency. One major part of his legacy will be the way his "divider and conqueror" political tactics have highlighted the many pathologies plaguing black urban culture in this country, and have brought about a massive deterioration in "race relations."

These pathologies did not originate with Obama. They have been half a century in the making, and may be traced to the mid-1960s when the legitimate civil rights movement was co-opted by the Left under the twin rubrics of the "War on Poverty" and the "Great Society." If indeed we have been engaged in a "war on poverty," it is long past time for us to acknowledge that poverty has been winning.

The most recent manifestations of this to shock the nation are the riots in Baltimore, and the multifarious excuses for them made by Baltimore Mayor (and secretary of the Democratic National Committee) Stephanie Rawlings-Blake. Yet, despite her posturings and those of other Democratic apologists, the one thing clear beyond doubt in the case of the Baltimore disturbances is that "white racism" has little or nothing to do with the problem.

Begin with the fact that Rawlings-Blake is herself black, like her police chief and her city attorney. Also, over 50% of Baltimore's police force is non-white. And yet, as The Economist reports in its issue of May 2:

Crime is rife. In 2013, 233 people were murdered in Baltimore, giving the city a higher murder rate than South Africa. Even as thousands of cops in riot gear enforced a curfew on April 28, police scanners reported carjackings, robberies, and one murder -- none of them connected to the protests. Gangs are common and visible.

The Economist goes on to argue that this sorry state of affairs "has its roots in a previous Era," painting a picture of a surging black population in the 1950s and 1960s from further south, in search of industrial jobs which were then "sucked away" by "deindustrialization":

#1  race riots under the first ever black president

i would not call this a legacy to be proud of particularly considering he was not a foreign policy president but focused on domestic affairs.

there has been way too much glorifying of black victim culture

you'd think they were the only people ever to be slaves.

eg: the movie, 12 years a slave

why don't they make that same movie about the white europeans, the irish eg that were taken slaves by the Caliphate, and Thomas Jeffersen's war to free them?

first ever foreign US war was to free slaves - our slaves taken by Muslims for the Caliphate

There's a black US guy I know living in Australia (well only half black really he looks nothing like an african black)

and he posts continually on facebook all about the race riots in the US and how racist everyone is

he's been living in the least racist country in the world for him, Australia, and complains constantly about the US like he never left

he's been living here 30 years. he has kids here (with a white woman).

and you hear nothing from him except racist racist racist.

The ultimate irony? He won't associate with Aborigines because he himself is racist and thinks he's a "better black" than them!

#2  i think i have the solution to your problem. National servie. Conscription in other words, Israeli style. You take them age 16, out of school, and you send them far away from their families to the other side of the country where they know nobody. You separate the men and women for obvious reasons. You put them to volunteer work for a year. THey live in barracks. They pick up litter. They train physical exercise. They help old people in the old people's home. They do bit of military training (no guns). They are run like a military. They are given free medical, dental and optical care. They are subject to curfew, lights out by 9pm. Up at 6am. They are disciplined and taught to make their bed, iron their uniform (mandatory). After one year they are returned home.

and the authorities should consciously mix up the races. no ghettos.

They have made new friends outside their little gangs, developed a work ethic and some self respect.

#9  anon1, on financial and ideological grounds I loath the idea of conscription but I have to say the troublemakers in the world tend to be military age men/boys and such a plan might break the chain of failure.

I'd send them to the peace corps where they can see what the third world is like and where things are generally so bad they couldn't do any damage.

#10  Fostering dependence has always been the basic method, but now we see now Progressives are using the Fed to impose their model across entire populations, regardless of economic prosperity by taking away the ability of law enforcement to police anybody. The end result, is that law abiding citizens will be at the mercy of dependent mobs who will be under the command and protection of, a hostile Fed gov bureaucracy
