Netanyahu under Fire over Son's Non-Jewish Norwegian Girlfriend
[An Nahar] Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was under fire Sunday from religious politicians following a report that his son was dating a non-Jewish woman, media said.
If you're male and you've ever been to Norway you know what happened to the lad. I believe it's called "hubba hubba syndrome."
Norwegian newspaper Dagen reported that Yair Netanyahu, 23, was dating 25-year-old Norwegian Sandra Leikanger, currently studying in Israel.

Dagen said that at a meeting in Davos, Netanyahu had told his Norwegian counterpart Erna Solberg the two had recently holidayed in Norway.

Nissim Zeev, a member of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, told the Jerusalem Post on Sunday Netanyahu must "display national responsibility" as prime minister.

"It's a big problem," he said. "I bet it pains him."

MP Moshe Feiglin, a hardline member of Netanyahu's ruling Likud party, told the Jerusalem Post the relationship "is very unfortunate."

The paper cited a source close to Netanyahu's son as confirming that Leikanger is not Jewish.

The bad boy Israeli organization Lehava, which says it aims "to prevent assimilation in the Holy Land," called on Netanyahu "to prevent this relationship."

Two Doves Thrown From Pope's Balcony Are Attacked
[LATINO.FOXNEWS] Two white doves that were released by children standing alongside Pope Francis as a peace gesture have been attacked by other birds.

As tens of thousands of people watched in St. Peter's Square on Sunday, a seagull and a large black crow swept down on the doves right after they were set free from an open window of the Apostolic Palace.

One dove lost some feathers as it broke free from the gull. But the crow pecked repeatedly at the other dove.

It was not clear what happened to the doves as they flew off.

While speaking at the window beforehand, Francis had appealed for peace in Ukraine, where anti-government protesters have died.

-30 Degrees in Chicago This Week?
The next blast of brutal cold will grip most of the eastern two-thirds of the United States early this week and could yield the lowest temperatures so far this winter in many communities.
While harsh cold is returning to the Midwest and Northeast this weekend, it will pale in comparison to what will follow for Monday through Wednesday.
Hey Al Gore, hows that Global Warming thingy working out for you?
The BBC notes this could lead to a renewal of frost fairs on the Thames River. A charming thought if one isn't suffering from energy poverty...

Egypt Constitution Approved By 98.1%
[Ynet] Supreme electoral commission reports that Egypt military-backed constitution was approved by 98.1% in first vote since coup toppled country's president
As the famous philosopher R.Ricardo once commented: "I dun blivit."
Egypt's election committee reported on Saturday that 98.1% of voters have approved a new, military-backed constitution in the first vote since a coup toppled the country's president.
Any bloc of "agreement" greater than 90 percent is fixed. Greater than 80 percent is probably fixed. You'll always find that many people who'll vote "no" just to be ornery.
Egypt's High Election Commission said Saturday that 38.6% of the country's more than 53 million eligible voters took part in the two-day poll. Officials say 20.6 million voters cast ballots, with some 20.3 million votes counted after eliminating those voided.
So they're five percent up on the number who voted in favor of the Moslem Brüderbund constitution. Five's a nice round number.
This is the first vote since the military removed Egypt's first freely elected president, Mohammed Morsi
...the former president of Egypt. A proponent of the One Man, One Vote, One Time principle, Morsi won election after the deposal of Hosni Mubarak and jumped to the conclusion it was his turn to be dictator...
, following massive protests in July. Officials view the vote as key in legitimizing the country's military-backed interim government and its plan for parliamentary and presidential elections.

But Morsi's supporters and his outlawed Moslem Brüderbund group boycotted the vote and have alleged the results were forged.
Me'n Ricky agree with them.
The Brotherhood has vowed to keep up their near-daily protests.
I don't agree with that. I dunno if Ricky does or not. Ask him.
"A democratic transition should be characterized by an expansion of freedoms, but Egyptians have seen substantial restrictions on the exercise of their democratic rights," said Eric Bjornlund, Democracy International's president and head of the observation mission in Egypt.
No! Reeeeeeeally?
Democracy International, which had some 80 observers in Egypt, said on voting days it noted that a heavy security deployment and the layout of some of the polling stations "could have jeopardized voters' ability to cast a ballot in secret."

"There is no evidence that such problems substantially affected the outcome of this referendum, but they could affect the integrity or the credibility of more closely contested electoral processes in the future," the group said in a statement Friday.
I'm guessing the new constitution would have won in an honest vote, but that the dishonesty is going to blight it.
In the lead up to the vote, police incarcerated
Youse'll never take me alive coppers!... [BANG!]... Ow!... I quit!
those campaigning for a "no" vote on the referendum, leaving little room for arguing against the document.

On Friday, supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohammed Morsi erupted into the streets to denounce the draft charter. Morsi was deposed in a popularly backed military coup July 3 and the previous constitution was drafted under his government.

Some protests turned violent. Four people were killed in the ensuing festivities, Egypt's Health Ministry said Saturday. It said 15 people were maimed nationwide.

Arabia
UAE president 'stable after stroke'
[Egypt Independent] UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan has undergone an operation after suffering a stroke and is in stable, pH balanced condition, the ministry of presidential affairs said Saturday.

Sheikh Khalifa, 65, has "suffered a stroke that led doctors to operate him... He is in a stable condition," the ministry said in a statement carried by WAM state news agency.

He became president of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of the oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi in November 2004, when he succeeded his late father sheikh Zayed bin Sultan, who founded the federation in 1971.

Abu Dhabi sits on the bulk of the UAE's oil wealth, ranked the world's seventh largest, which makes its the wealthiest among the seven UAE sheikhdoms.

Bangladesh
Cop role comes into question
[Bangla Daily Star] Lapses on the part of Monirampur police have raised concern whether the Rishipara gang-rape victims will get justice.

Two housewives of Hindu Rishi community living at a corner of Hazrail village in Monirampur upazila of Jessore were gang-raped around 1:30am on January 8.

This was to "punish" the community for voting in January 5 polls, according to confessional statements of two detained suspects.

Locals and victim families alleged police came to know about the incident on January 8 morning but took no action.

No case was filed until journalists got the victims' version of the incident and contacted the law enforcers.

On January 10, law enforcers brought the victims to Monirampur Police Station and recorded a rape case under Prevention of Repression on Women and Children Act 2000 section 9 (i).

Though one of the victims mentioned in her statement to the police that she was gang-raped, the case was not filed under the section 9 (iii) which is the clause for gang rape.

Police also sent the victims for medical tests to Jessore General Medical College and Hospital after 79 hours.

It is not possible to find symptoms of rape after 24 hours if the victim is married, according to Yakub Ali Mollah, superintendent of the hospital.

Contacted, Rabiul Hossain, investigating officer of the case, said, "We came to know about the incident in the evening on January 9."

But a number of villagers seeking anonymity said police were informed about the matter in the morning on January 8 and a team of Monirampur police did come to the spot twice on the day -- in the afternoon and evening.

Meanwhile,
...back at the wreckage, Captain Poindexter wished he had a cup of coffee. Even instant would do...
Mir Rezaul Hossain, officer-in-charge of Monirampur cop shoppe, has been closed for making irresponsible comments to the media. Mizanur Rahman took over as the OC yesterday.

When a group of journalists went to meet Rezaul on January 14, he said the women made it up as a political quarter might have offered them money or aid.

The Daily Star has got an audio clip of the remarks.

"They [Rishi community people] make a mountain out of a molehill. They lie a lot," said the officer.

"The question is whether the rape had taken place at all. Does a husband lie with his wife the next day she was raped?"

He said even if the rape had taken place it's no big deal for them. "The Rishi community people do not take such an incident very seriously. They often do it by mutual consent."

Contacted yesterday, Rezaul Hossain said his statement has been taken out of context by the media.

Joydev Bhodro, Jessore superintendent of police, told The Daily Star yesterday that a three-member probe committee led by an ASP has been formed to investigate the allegation against Rezaul.

"He has been closed for making irresponsible and racist comments regarding a community and a sensitive case which is under investigation."

Caucasus/Russia/Central Asia
First Person Report: Revolution in Kiev, Ukraine
Usually reporters try to answer the question: "Who came out to Maidan and why." Depending on the political leaning of MSM, the answers are different. Some say it's "fascists who came out to lynch the Moscali (Ukranian derogatory for Moscovites and Russians in general).", some say "they're bums and slackers, who've got nothing better to do" and "instigators on the government payroll." In reality, there is no answer. Those who came out are completely different. Remember, how a couple of years in Moscow there was a MSM buzzword "angry townspeople." Here you see football fans, retirees, office plankton. And everyone is standing together. A sweet, ol' grandmother is pouring Molotv cocktail in a nationalists' bottles; and a manager of a large company is carrying ammunition to the student. And as it seems to me at this time, these people do not have a specific plan, nor idea of what to do next. Of course, individually, everyone has their own plan to "save Ukraine." For some its "we need a couple of crates of AKs and grenades, we'll sort things out here quickly." Others "need to ask the world community for help and bring in the UN troops." At this time there is no central idea of what to do, an idea that can unite and point in one direction the people at Maidan.

The only thing that is completely clear -- people came out against Yanukovich.
...am beginning to get a better handle on this, but it is still, at least to me, somewhat confusing...

NK executes entire family of Kim's uncle
[Bangla Daily Star] North Korea has reportedly executed almost all relatives of Jang Song-thaek, the purged uncle of the North's despotic ruler Kim Pudge Jong-un
...the overweight, pouty-looking hereditary potentate of North Korea. Pudge appears to believe in his own divinity, but has yet to produce any loaves and fishes, so his subjects remain malnourished...
, underscoring the communist regime's reign of terror.

Once dubbed the North's No. 2 man, Jang was himself executed last December for plotting to subvert the regime, which presaged the purging of many with ties to the disgraced elite, who had a wide network of associates in the ruling Workers' Party, military and state organs.

The reports said Jang's sister Jang Kye-sun and brother-in-law Jon Yong-jin were executed in early December, while Jang's nephew Jang Yong-chol met the same fate last month. Jon was the North's ambassador to Cuba while Yong-chol served as the top envoy to Malaysia.

Multiple sources also said state agents had killed all direct descendants of Jang's older brothers, who were onetime general officers in the North Korean military before dying of natural causes. Children were among those killed, the sources said.

Seoul's Unification Ministry neither denied nor confirmed the reports.

North Korea traditionally purges all family members over the age of 15 after executing a government official in fear of future Dire Revenge™ against the regime, said Ahn Chan-il, director of the World North Korea Research Center.

Pointing to Jang's role in fostering economic cooperation with China, Ahn added that the recent execution of Jang's associates and relatives could help explain why Pyongyang is eager to mend fences with Seoul.

"North Korea is suffering from a partial oil embargo imposed on them by China," Ahn said.

"Pyongyang officials are genuinely scared because they have barely enough fuel to run their tanks and airplanes while the South and the US get ready for a military exercise," he said, referring to the annual South Korea-US military drills slated to begin in late February.

Last Friday, Pyongyang proposed holding the reunions of families separated during the 1950-53 Korean War. The proposal came after it rejected South Korean President Park Geun-hye's proposal on January 6 to hold family meetings unconditionally.

Europe
New clashes as Ukraine's president tries to tempt opposition
[REUTERS] Police clashed with protesters in central Kiev on Sunday and the fate of Ukraine's government was uncertain after embattled President Viktor Yanukovich offered important posts to opposition leaders, including the role of prime minister.

One of the president's main foes described his offer as a "poisoned" attempt to divide the opposition and kill off mass protests. The demonstrations erupted late last year when Yanukovich ditched landmark agreements with the European Union
...the successor to the Holy Roman Empire, only without the Hapsburgs and the nifty uniforms and the dancing...
and opted instead for closer ties with Russia.

Emboldened opposition leaders said they would press for more concessions, including early elections, setting the stage for a tough political battle when parliament meets for a special session on Tuesday.

Two remanded in aerial firing case
[DAWN] A local anti-terrorism court remanded on Saturday Shahid Akram and Muhammad Akram in police custody for two days in the gun sex and harassment case.

The two men had resorted to jubilation firing on the arrival of Federal Minister for Trade and Textile Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan in the city on Friday.

The Satellite Town police had earlier claimed to have jugged

about a dozen people in the case but the production of only two men in the court smacked of some foul play.

Woman's head shaved as 'punishment'

Thai anti-government protester killed, adds to doubts over election
[REUTERS] A Thai anti-government protest leader was shot and killed in Bangkok on Sunday when violence erupted as demonstrators blocked early voting in many areas of the capital ahead of a disputed election next week.

It brought the corpse count to 10, with scores maimed, since protesters erupted into the streets in November, vowing to shut down the capital and force Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office.

A front man for the national police, Piya Utayo, identified the dead man as Suthin Tharatin, one of the protest leaders. "Suthin was shot in the head and in the chest," he said.

Yingluck called the February 2 election, hoping to cement her hold on power, but the protests have continued and the Election Commission has been pushing to delay the vote.

In a clear setback for Yingluck, a senior government official said that as many as 45 of the 50 polling stations set up in Bangkok for advanced voting had been shut because of anti-government protesters.

Bangkok police said festivities had broken out between anti-government protesters and Yingluck supporters, with the two sides trading punches before shots were fired. The Erawan Medical Center, which monitors Bangkok hospitals, said 11 people were hurt in the festivities in the Bang Na district.

It was not immediately clear who had fired the shots, but the protesters accused the government and police of trying to intimidate them.

#2  Remember that same 'bright' people in the Beltway who talked about 'nation building' were the same strata of people who said engaging the Chinese economically (that is to ship American jobs to China and import with minimal constrain the output) would lessen the potential for conflict by integrating the economies.

#4  This brings up a scenario I have often thought about:

If someone with a gun keeps saying that he is going to shoot you, and you don't have a gun of your own isn't it irresponsible NOT to arm yourself for the impending duel?

Has Japan started the building process to produce their own "gun"?

As pointed out, hope they're not counting on the Obamanation.

#5  Has Japan started the building process to produce their own "gun"?

Yes. They 'classify' the Izumo and Hyuga as a DDH, a helicopter destroyer, escort vessel. Sort of another stretch of the term 'destroyer' associated with the old WWII models (something the Americans have been doing with de facto light cruisers).

It would a reasonable deduction, based upon capabilities, that the Japanese could probably 'assemble' nuke devices in quick order, if they really felt necessary (as in the absence of a reliable ally).

#2  Greeny nonsense.

LPG and CNG vehicles are the answer. There are at least 10 million on the road. Hardly rocket science.

#4  Why it has taken 40 years to finally do what the department of energy was created and tasked to do is beyond comprehension. We should not be sending any money to corrupt regimes. North America has plenty of oil and gas and the technology experts to exploit it for our benefit. We lack leadership and long-term vision. The mid-east produces nothing but terrorism; bleed them dry.

#5  Fracking has a really big problem; namely for some yet unknown reason, the crude from this, especially the Bakken crude has a greater possibility of exploding in the case of a rail derailment and the tank cars are punctured. so far this year 5 major derailments and if you include the Canadian runaway train debacle 47 deaths due to this. The Railroads and the gov't are actively seeking the cause ans while it is known the tank cars built to conform to DOT111 standard have been OK for conventional crude, they are not working for fracked crude. And upgrading to the DOT 112 or 114 standard may not be economical. Railcar manufacturers currently have a backlog into 2016.

#7  Almost 100 years ago:
ARDMORE GAS EXPLOSION
The casinghead gasoline explosion that occurred September 27, 1915, at Ardmore, in Carter County, Oklahoma, was the deadliest and most destructive of any up to that time. Casinghead gasoline, or natural gasoline, is collected from natural gas at the casinghead of an oil or gas well. The product was generally shipped to refineries by rail.

On September 26, 1915, a railroad car carrying casinghead gasoline arrived in Ardmore at the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway depot. There the car was left until it could be taken to a nearby refinery. The next day the temperature quickly rose, activating the car's pop-off valve, designed to release gas pressure. Gas began to pour out and into the low-lying areas of downtown Ardmore. The train conductor refused to move the car because of a fire at a nearby asphaltum plant. The Ardmore Refining Company then sent a representative, who removed the dome from the top of the car, filling the air with gas and vapors. At 2:20 p.m. on September 27 an explosion, triggered by an unidentified source (or maybe not unidentified - From the news "It developed today that there was but one workman employed in repairing the tank car in the Santa Fe railroad yards, when a spark from his hammer ignited the gasoline and resulted in an explosion as terrific as an equal quantity of dynamite. The workman was Ira Woods, employed by a refinery company. Bits of his body were found many yards from the scene of the explosion.), destroyed most of downtown Ardmore.

Many people were injured, and forty-three people were killed. A district grand jury and a local coroner's jury found the Santa Fe Railway at fault.

After the Ardmore disaster new rules were put into effect regulating statewide shipment of casinghead gasoline.

#8  USN, it is not the fracking that is causing the issue. It is the lack of natural gas pipelines in the Bakken. This is being remedied, but the problem is too many light ends being put into the rail cars, which lowers the flash point of the oil.

#9  Still think we should have invested in biodiesel long ago and turned all that extra french-fry greese into powering all those SUVs Americans like. Put in a $100 heater on your engine and it works up in the frozen north as well.

Put solar panels on every rooftop in the southwest and we could power the southwest and probably a lot farther.

Small self-contained nuclear reactors like the kind the Japanese could power the remaining areas with clean power.

If Bush had instituted these three ideas on Sept 12 the bulk of the War on Terror would be over by now as funding from Saudi Arabia would have been reduced to a trickle and we'd be hitting all of the Kyoto targets by accident without crippling our economy.

#10  Remoteman, I agree, and while the volatiles in the Bakken crude do seem to be different, the experts haven't yet gotten their arms around the scope of it. I have only been reading oil train logistics as a sidebar to the furball going on here in the Pac NW over the dreaded coal trains. but there is something going on that is specific to the Bakken crude. And to Beoseker's pipeline point, there is evidence that piplines have their share of spills however they are usually in remote areas, so less potential to hame people. and the current pipline invnetory run north-south, and the coastal refineries want the Bakken crude as it is cheaper than middle east oil, even figuring in the added transport costs. And it will be at least 10 years before Keystone pipeline comes on line, if ever, thanks to the ever decisive Waffler-in-Chief.

#11  I'm really sorry, guys -- I have no idea what happened to the articles Brer Rabbit and I posted, and I can't remember where I found mine, to resubmit it. I looked everywhere I can think of, but clearly i was more creative than usual with this one.... and this morning I cleared my history because the iPad was running a bit slowly.

All I remember was that the author suggested that we need to break the Gulf oil companies now because the oil from fracking will peter out within a decade.
