While heretofore cloaked as international philanthropy and nation building, hundreds of billions in USAID (previously known as foreign aid) will soon openly be correctly channeled through legitimate UN global taxation schemes. All of Africa and the world will eventually fall under a ObamaCare UN sanctioned mandate as the west finally steps up to it's responsibilities to redress the evils of racist oppression and colonialism.

I share your distrust of the UN. That said, hardly any of us in the US have ever had to live without clean water. Hardly any of us have ever had to face the loss of our child to utterly preventable disease. We have forgotten what life was like for our grandparents, who could expect to lose a child to preventable disease (as my grandparents did when they lost their first son to diphtheria).
I appreciate Chelsea Clinton for reminding us that infant diarrhea is preventable for pennies a day. Got a few cents to spare, gentlemen?
Even a simple pair of clean flip-flops can help protect a child from picking up hookworm parasites. Imagine how much malnutrition would go away if children didn't have to share what little food they had with a mess of intestinal worms.
Our family has had the privilege of supporting home water filters and clean wells (including training locals to maintain them) through partnerships between churches. In addition, we have the opportunity--through Compassion International and Vision Trust--to provide medical, educational, and nutritional support for several orphaned kids. We in the US have many opportunities to provide assistance without political complications, assistance that actually helps people without creating an entitlement plantation culture.

If Ms Clinton is busy doing good works, she won't have time to be involved in politics. And, any money she spends while over there will trickle down to the local economy. Possibly the experience will recalibrate her ideas of wealth an poverty, after growing up surrounded by comfort, priviledge, and Progressive ideas. Look at wht happened to David Horowitz and a number of other Red Diaper babies to see the possibilities.

I am tired of leftists standing in the public square, announcing through the megaphone of liberal MSM about thier glorious works, for the only purpose of using that to attempt to catapult themselves into a lordship position over everyone else in society when the opportunity comes.
But, oh, how dare I question such noble human beings standing on the street corners of society belowing about how wonderful they are by their good works, bringing national attention to themselves.
People who do so "without the right hand knowing what the left hand does", quietly, secretly, doing so, so that those benefited will think highly of people around them in general and maybe even God Himself. THAT is true service to all, for all, thanks to anonymous benefactors.

I'm with mom on this one. Another effective group to support is International Care Ministries.
No religious affiliation on my part with them - they do excellent work in the poorest parts of the Philipines, account for every cent and spent virtually nothing on overhead/administration (all volunteered, including by finance and other well paid professionals).

[An Nahar] An international team of amateur and professional astronomers on Monday announced the discovery of a planet whose skies are lit up by four suns -- the first reported case of such a phenomenon.
The planet, located about 5,000 light years from Earth, has been dubbed PH1 in honor of Planet Hunters, a program led by Yale University in the United States which enlists volunteers to look for signs of new planets.
PH1 is orbiting two suns, and in turn is orbited by a second distant pair of stars. Only six planets are known to orbit two stars, researchers say, and none of those are orbited by other distant stars.
"Circumbinary planets are the extremes of planet formation," said Yale's Meg Schwamb, lead author of a paper presented Monday at the annual meeting of the Division for Planetary Sciences of the American Astronomical Society in Nevada.
"The discovery of these systems is forcing us to go back to the drawing board to understand how such planets can assemble and evolve in these dynamically challenging environments."
U.S. citizen scientists and Planet Hunters participants Kian Jek and Robert Gagliano were the first to identify PH1. Their observations were then confirmed by a team of U.S. and British researchers working in Hawaii.
PH1 is a gas giant with a radius about 6.2 times that of Earth, making it a bit bigger than Neptune. It orbits a pair of eclipsing stars that are 1.5 and 0.41 times the mass of the Sun roughly every 138 days.
The two other stars are orbiting the planetary system at a distance that is roughly 1,000 times the distance between Earth and the Sun.
The Planethunters.org website was created in 2010 to encourage amateur astronomers to identify planets outside our solar system, using data from the U.S. space agency NASA's Kepler space telescope.
Kepler, launched in March 2009, is NASA's first mission in search of Earth-like planets orbiting stars similar to our Sun.
The discovery of PH1 was made available online Monday at the site arxiv.org and has been submitted to the Astrophysical Journal for publication.
"It still continues to astonish me how we can detect, let alone glean so much information, about another planet thousands of light-years away just by studying the light from its parent star," Jek said.

Both Asimov and Heinlein's last few novels were self-indulgent messes. The short story "Nightfall" is the version I choose to remember.

Except the ones who overwhelmingly disagree, some of whom are cuttingly direct about why.

What about the 300 year drought in North America from 1150-1350 that destroyed the Anazi culture, the Mississippi Valley culture and the Tiwanaku civilization around Lake Titicaca in present-day Bolivia? Does that fit in your models?
What about the drought that brought an end to the Old kingdom of Egypt in 2181BCE that made the Nile almost dry up for 8 years? Does that fit in your models?
Little Ice age fit in?
Does your model still work now that it has been shown that Global Warming stopped 16 fucking years ago?

The climate "scientists" cherry pick their data to match their model. They ignore inconvenient truths like the medieval warm period, and some of the examples listed in the comments here.
It seems to me that if a mathematical model is accurate, you should be able to put in data for the forties and fifties and see if the model produces output that matches the historical data for the sixties and seventies.

[An Nahar] Tunisian political parties met on Tuesday for crisis talks on the contents and calendar for adopting a new constitution, which were attended by the Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali and President Moncef Marzouki.
The meeting, called by Tunisia's main trade union, the UGTT, gathered more than 40 political groups in a bid to resolve the impasse over drafting the text by the National Constituent Assembly, but was boycotted by two key parties.
"The tensions have multiplied; the differences have sharpened" since the revolution that toppled dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali early last year, UGTT secretary general Houcine Abessi was quoted as saying in Tunisian daily La Presse.
"We thought that a force would emerge and launch an initiative that would reduce those tensions and bring the protagonists to the negotiating table," he added.
Reflecting ongoing political tensions, two of the ruling coalition's three parties -- Jebali's Islamist party Ennahda and Marzouki's centre-left Congress for the Republic -- decided on Monday to boycott the meeting.
They justified that by the presence of Call of Tunisia, a party set up in June by Beji Caid Essebsi, who steered Tunisia in the aftermath of the revolution and whom the ruling allies accuse of grouping officials from the deposed regime.
At Tuesday's meeting, Marzouki said he supported "all initiatives aimed at gathering the national forces."
The talks follow an announcement by the coalition's three parties on Sunday that they had struck a compromise on the nature of the country's future political system, and setting June 23 as the date for presidential and parliamentary polls.
The deal on the constitution must be approved by a two-thirds majority of MPs in the Assembly, Tunisia's interim parliament.

The Cuban government announced Tuesday that it plans to rescind the requirement that its citizens obtain exit visas in order to travel abroad, generating hope on the island that a longstanding bureaucratic hindrance to their freedom of movement will soon be restored.
The change in immigration policy was announced Tuesday in the official state newspaper PravdaGranma, with the details printed in the government's legal journal. Beginning Jan. 14, the news report said, Cubans wishing to leave the island temporarily will no longer need to obtain a government-issued "travel permit" -- a document that in the past has been withheld for political or arbitrary reasons.
How the new rules will actually change things for everyday Cubans remains to be seen. Much depends on the way the law is applied and the fine print. Cubans will still need to obtain a passport to travel, and the new rules allow officials to deny anyone a passport for "reasons of public interest."
The government also said it would maintain special travel restrictions for the professional classes because it fears that they could be lured away by high salaries abroad after benefiting from a low-cost socialized education -- an attempt, as the regime puts it, to preserve "the human capital created by the revolution from the theft of talents practiced by the powerful nations."

How can someone who has declared an annual income of 25,000 ($32,400) transfer 52 million abroad? What kind of supplementary income must an individual have who, according to his tax returns, earned 5,588 in 2010, yet still managed to move 19.8 million abroad? And how can it be that a Greek citizen sequesters 9.7 million abroad although he supposedly earned exactly zero euros?
These are the questions that tax fraud investigators will have to ask of a number of individuals whose identity has so far only been made public in the form of initials. For instance, a "G. D." stands at the top of a list with the names of 54,000 Greek citizens who relocated major assets abroad between 2009 and 2011. The list stems from the Greek central bank and is now in the hands of the Finance Ministry.

I know the Arab world is normally a payoff situation to do any business. We know China has massive corruption. I am saying that in the rest of the world this is how things are done. Merkel told business leaders Germany should end the automatic progression of workers into ever higher tax brackets due to inflation, which siphons more than 20 billion euros ($26 billion) out of the economy each year. She also renewed her calls for cuts in pension contributions as another way to boost purchasing power.
"Growth in Germany can at the moment be stimulated by an increase in domestic demand more than anything else," she said.
Germany has come under pressure to boost domestic demand to relieve pressure on the euro zone's struggling periphery during the sovereign debt crisis. Merkel has also encouraged German firms to give their employees higher wage increases this year.
