Black D.A. Drops Death Penalty Against Cop-Killer Black Panther Mumia
District Attorney R. Seth Williams announced Wednesday that he will no longer pursue the death penalty against former Black Panther Mumia Abu-Jamal, meaning he will spend the rest of his life in prison for gunning down a white police officer nearly 30 years ago.
Abu-Jamal had become beloved by leftists around the world for his persistent condemnations and attacks on America, his efforts to blame everyone else for the cold blooded murder he committed, and the aggressive efforts of his well funded attorneys to help him evade the death penalty for 30 years, all the while tormenting the survivors of his victim.

The Strange Death Of Sergeant Drenth
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner's Office will announce today that it has ruled the death of Sgt. Sean Drenth a suicide.

Drenth, 34, was found fatally wounded near the state Capitol on the night of Oct. 18, 2010. He was lying on his back on the ground next to the passenger side of his patrol car. The driver- and passenger-side doors were open. Drenth evidently was killed by a blast from his shotgun, which was found resting on his chest with the muzzle pointing toward his chin.

Though evidence suggested suicide, particularly the shotgun on his chest, others suggested homicide. His service pistol had been flung 40 feet from where his body lay, there were signs of a struggle, and a secondary weapon Drenth carried had been fired toward where his service pistol was found. Investigators also were perplexed by evidence indicating there had been someone at the scene whose presence police could not explain.

At the time of his death, Drenth was one of more than 24 officers who, for more than a year, were under investigation into reported theft while working off-duty at a south Phoenix housing complex.

They were accused of pocketing thousands of dollars for security services that they claimed to have done but that authorities allege they didn't provide.

Drenth died before indictments were made in the case.

Three of Drenth's fellow officers and a former officer were indicted, and police officials later confirmed that Drenth would have been indicted had he lived. They said Drenth could have faced felony charges.

Bloody Czech Wedding as Drunk Bride, Groom Exchange Blows
[An Nahar] A Czech wedding party ended in tears, bruises and the drunk tank last Saturday as the inebriated newlyweds started a fight outside a restaurant, the police said Tuesday.
I've thought seriously about adding a new heading "Alcohol Involved." It would also encompass "Hold my beer" stories.
"The bride and the groom attacked each other. They were both drunk, and they both ended up with bruises," police spokeswoman Jana Mazourova told Agence France Predsse.
I give 'em six months, outside...
That's four months longer than Kim Kardashian and whatshisname. You sure?
The incident between the 31-year-old bride and the 22-year-old bridegroom occurred in the central Czech town of Havlickuv Brod, about 100 kilometers southeast of the capital Prague.

"The bride, who refused a breathalyser test, ended up in a drunk tank. The police were afraid she would keep attacking her husband," said Mazourova.

The couple is facing a fine for the incident handled by the police as a minor offence. Mazourova said she had no information about whether divorce proceedings were under way.

Reagan Shooter Still Trying to Prove he is Safe to Release
[An Nahar] A lawyer for John Hinckley Jr., the man who tried to assassinate ex-president Ronald Reagan in 1981, sought Monday to prove his client can be safely released 30 years after the attack.

Hinckley, 56, was found not guilty by reason of insanity in the shooting of Reagan and three others, including White House press secretary James Brady.

Since then, he has been at St Elizabeth's psychiatric hospital in Washington.

In federal court her, Hinckley's attorney Barry Levine argued that his client's friendly and loving relationships, social and therapeutic activities and even hopes for a job showed he should be able to function in society.
I see. So he'll be moving in with you, counselor?
Ummmmmmmm...no, your honor.

He is asking the hospital to allow Hinckley to spend more time with his mother who is 85 and lives in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Asking therapist Carl Beffa about the patient's relationships with women in the hospital including an engagement he broke off, the attorney asked: "Do these relationships elevate his mood, make him hopeful, and reduce the risks?"

Beffa said he believed the relationships gave Hinckley "the opportunity of learning life." He also said he favored parole for the patient, and the possibility of his working in a pet store that was said to have offered him a job.

"Ideally, it would be three weeks ... to develop a relationship and also an interaction with the group," Beffa said, referring to his possibly working and attending group therapy, guitar classes and volunteering at a hospital.
I see. So he'll be moving in with you, doctor?
Ummmmmmmm...no, your honor.

A prosecutor, Sarah Chasson, asked Beffa for an example of Hinckley's willingness to join the Williamsburg community.

"I can't think of any," Beffa said.

Hospital lawyers and doctors filed a motion under seal at the end of July asking that Hinckley eventually be placed on "convalescent leave," but prosecutors quoted it in their own filing, making it part of the public record.

A college dropout, Hinckley waited for Reagan to walk out of a Washington hotel where he had given a speech on March 31, 1981.

Hinckley fired his six-shot .22 revolver at the then-U.S. president. Reagan was seriously maimed but recovered.

Brady suffered a serious brain injury and never was able to return to his White House duties. Wheelchair-bound for the last three decades, he is now an advocate for gun control in the United States.

The hearings were to resume December 9.

Today's Idiot
Most muggers don't expect their victims to fight back. But if the victim is a professional mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter, problems can result.

Anthony Miranda, a 24-year-old convicted felon, was left bruised and beaten and hopping around on one foot when he tried mugging and carjacking a man on Friday night around 11:30 p.m. in Chicago. The victim, however, just so happened to be an MMA fighter and expert.

Japan Scientists Study Oyster 'Language'
Scientists in Japan have begun studying the "language" of oysters in an effort to find out what they are saying about their environment.
Other than "Eat me! Eat me!"
Translation error there -- you missed the little hiccup that implies negation. It's actually, "Don't eat me! Please don't eat me!"
Researchers are monitoring the opening and closing of the molluscs in response to changes in seawater, such as reduced oxygen or red tide, a suffocating algal bloom that can lead to mass die-offs.
Okay, men. Toss a few pounds of red tide in the tank. See how they react to that.
AAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!

Using a device they have nicknamed the "kai-lingual", a play on the Japanese word "kai" or shellfish, scientists from Kagawa University want to see if they can decode oyster movements that might warn of possible problems.

The "kai-lingual" uses a series of sensors and magnets to send information on the opening and closing of shells in response to environmental changes.

The technique has never before been used on oysters farmed for food, but has been employed by pearl oyster farmers.

"With kai-lingual, we can hear the 'screams', like 'we are in pain because of insufficient oxygen'," said Tsuneo Honjo, director of the Seto Inland Sea Regional Research Center at the university.
We usually hear this from them right around dinner time here at the Center...
Pearl oysters have been placed among their food-farmed cousins where they have acted as "interpreters", alerting growers to ocean changes, he said.
Yo, fish food! Smarten up! Da perfesser's talkin to yas! SMACK...
"We have firmly established conversations with pearl oysters through years of research. They should translate into the reactions of the farmed oysters for us in this project," he said.
Hiroshi...is she buying it?
The research started in October and will last until the harvest in March, Honjo said.
...or until the grant money runs out.
"So far, oysters are talking in a healthy fashion," he said.
Better take his word for it. He's a scientist...

#2  I'm getting the idea that maybe we need to spend some grant money to study the "language" politicians use. Maybe even try to come up with some kind of translator based on fuzzy logic. ICC says keeping close eye on DR Congo vote
[Daily Nation (Kenya)] International Criminal Court
... where Milosevich died of old age before being convicted ...
prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo on Tuesday warned the main rivals in DR Congo's tense election that he would not tolerate any violence.
"We're warning you! First guy to eat a pygmy is in big trouble!"
"We are closely watching the situation on the ground, and recourse to violence will not be accepted," he said in a statement.

Tension between President Joseph Kabila's camp and opposition supporters has already flared on several occasions before and since the November 28 election.

Human Rights Watch
... dedicated to bitching about human rights violations around the world...
has said at least 18 civilians have already died in election-related violence from November 26 to 28, most of them rubbed out by Kabila's presidential guard in Kinshasa.

"We continue to receive multiple reports of violent attacks against civilians, of fighting between rival factions, as well as attacks by gangs and the national security forces," Moreno-Ocampo said.

"I am also aware of reports of violence by gangs apparently associated with different political parties, politicians and party officials against demonstrators from opposing parties," he said.

Kabila's main rival Etienne Tshisekedi has issued thinly veiled threats of violence should the current trend giving the incumbent the lead in early tallying not be reversed when full results are released.

Thousands of soldiers were deployed in Kinshasa and other cities in Africa's second largest country amid fears that the conflict-prone country could descend into chaos no matter who is declared the winner.

Emir of Kuwait Dissolves National Assembly
[An Nahar] Kuwait Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah on Tuesday issued a decree dissolving the Gulf state parliament, state television
... and if you can't believe state television who can you believe?
reported, citing a "threat to supreme national interests."

"An emiri decree has been issued to dissolve the national assembly," the television said.

The action marks the fourth time in less than six years that the emir has dissolved parliament.

"After the obstruction of progress and due to the threat to the supreme national interests it was decided to go back to the nation," the decree said.

The decision came one week after the emir accepted the resignation of former prime minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammed al-Ahmed al-Sabah, a senior member of the ruling family, following widespread protests led by youth activists.

Under Kuwaiti law, fresh general elections must be held within 60 days. Another decree was expected to be issued soon to set the date for the polls.

Last week, the emir appointed former defense minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak al-Sabah as the new premier who chaired the outgoing cabinet on Tuesday and recommended that the emir dissolve parliament.

The former prime minister's resignation came after youth activists and opposition MPs mounted a campaign to oust him on allegations of corruption.

The campaign intensified in August following a corruption scandal in which about 15 of the 50-member parliament had allegedly accepted large deposits into their bank accounts, estimated by the opposition at $350 million.

Kuwait is OPEC's third largest producer, pumping around 3.0 million barrels of crude oil per day. It has a native population of 1.2 million people, besides 2.4 million foreign residents.

Russia Sends Troops to Moscow after Protests
[An Nahar] Russia has sent interior ministry troops to Moscow and increased the alert level of security forces after a protest of thousands of people opposing Vladimir Putin
...Second President of the Russian Federation and the first to remain sober. Because of constitutionally mandated term limits he is the current Prime Minister of Russia. His sock puppet, Dmitry Medvedev, was installed in the 2008 presidential elections. Putin is credited with bringing political stability and re-establishing something like the rule of law. During his eight years in office Russia's economy bounced back from crisis, seeing GDP increase, poverty decrease and average monthly salaries increase. During his presidency Putin passed into law a series of fundamental reforms, including a flat income tax of 13%, a reduced profits tax, and new land and legal codes. Under Putin, a new group of business magnates controlling significant swathes of Russia's economy has emerged, all of whom have close personal ties to Putin. The old bunch, without close personal ties to Putin, are in jail or in exile...
, officials said on Tuesday.

"They (the troops) have just one aim -- to ensure the security of the citizens," interior ministry forces front man Colonel Vasily Panchenkov told the Interfax news agency while a police front man said the security forces were now on a "heightened regime" of alert.

"The number of troops deployed is determined by the Moscow police," Panchenkov added, without giving numbers.

Russian News Service radio, citing its listeners, said several trucks filled with troops were heading into the center of Moscow along the city's main thoroughfares.

A front man for Moscow police said that up to 4,000 police and interior ministry troops would be deployed to ensure order during several planned rallies in the Russian capital on Tuesday.

"There's nothing extraordinary going on," the front man told Agence La Belle France Presse, saying the troops deployed in the streets would be from several military units.

Meanwhile,
...back at the fist fight, Jake ducked another roundhouse, then parried with his left, then with his right, finally with his chin...
a front man for the interior ministry told the RIA Novosti news agency that the strengthened security regime would be kept in place until the official end to vote counting from Sunday's polls.

Several thousand people erupted into the streets in central Moscow late Monday despite pouring rain for a rally against the results of Sunday's elections in which Putin's United Russia party won but with a sharply reduced majority.

Pro-Kremlin youth organization Nashi was set to stage a mass rally on Tuesday expected to attract thousands of supporters banging drums near the Kremlin walls to show their backing for United Russia.

#1  It was said that Putin was really rattled by the vote, in that even with massive vote fraud, United Russia barely eked out a slim majority. Without the fraud, they had only 25% of the vote, tops, and that with a very slim turnout.

As an interesting note, the communists also got slammed, and UR made them a deal that if they ignored most of the fraud, they would let some of the fraud for the communists go through, too, so it wouldn't be such a humiliating defeat for them as well.

But Putin is now on the spot. The fraud was so blatant and observed that there is going to be a lot more resistance to it when his election comes around in a few months. Even he is starting to realize that UR needs a major purge of its rottenest 20% to have any credibility left.

A New Oil refinery in North Dakota
Summary: Diesel fuel demand is sky high for drilling rigs as well as for the trucks and trains hauling the oil out. Railroads are hauling 10,000 tons of oil to Louisana refineries. Regularly.

The new ND refinery is quite small, (20,000 bpd) but looks like permitting is mostly complete. Maybe it flies beneath the EPA radar?

Mostly talking about the Bakken formation in ND, but Eagle Ford shale in Texas is also mentioned. The Superconducting Supercollider was started in the (Austin Chalk) formation just above the Eagle Ford, which I believe stretches from Dallas to Houston, maybe to San Antonio.

#1  North Dakota regularly experiences seasonal diesel fuel crunches - harvest time means the heavy farming equipment needs fuel much in excess of the baseline diesel fuel need.
Now with massive increase in baseline diesel demands with the western ND petro boom, it makes sense to create diesel locally for local consumption.
Keep in mind ND's population in 2010 was 672,000 - many more than that live within 30 miles of my home.

Dell Abandons Android Tablet in U.S.
[An Nahar] Dell said Monday it would halt sales of its Android tablet computer in the U.S. market, as rival Amazon's new Kindle Fire has heated up in a market dominated by Apple's iPad.
Just got mine. Possibly the neatest piece of electronix I've ever owned...
The Fire or the iPad?
The Fire. I'll never be bored in an emergency room again.
A message on the Texas-based computer's website said that the seven-inch (17.8-centimeter) Streak tablet powered by Google's
...contributed $814,540 to the 2008 Obama campaign...
mobile operating software would no longer be sold in the United States.

"Dell remains committed to the mobility market and continues to sell products here and in other parts of the world," the company said in an email response to an Agence La Belle France Presse inquiry.

"We remain committed to expanding our reach beyond PCs (personal computers) with a targeted set of open, standards-based mobility solutions and services designed for commercial and mobile professional customers," it added.

The Streak 7 failed to gain momentum after its debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. The tablets were priced at $200 as long as buyers signed contracts with telecom service provider T-Mobile.

Online retail powerhouse Amazon.com has meanwhile reported that its new Kindle Fire tablet was its best-selling product during the Black Friday shopping rush the day after Thanksgiving.

Fire has a seven-inch screen and is priced at $199, believed to be slightly less than what it costs to make the tablets. Fire also synchs with the growing trove of digital entertainment content available at Amazon.

Dell said Streak 7 continues to be available "in many markets" through partners such as Optus in Australia. A 10-inch (25-centimeter) version of the Streak is sold in China.

#5  It's a lot lighter than my iPad I. It's only got 8GB of memory, but my iPad only has 16GB. 8GB is lots of books, and it's even pretty many songs, assuming I want to use it to listen to music, which I don't. I can check the 'Burg or the O Club or Facebook and make comments as long as I'm in WiFi range. I can play Angry Birds, should I suddenly lose my mind and develop the urge.

I don't have to program it, so I don't care if it's Android or iOS, as long as it's not Windoze.

Europe
Greece examining ‘free’ US tank offer
Cash-strapped Greece is considering a free offer of hundreds of redundant M1A1 Abrams tanks extended by the US government, the Greek army said on Wednesday.

“This is a free offer,” army spokesman Yiannis Sifakis told AFP.

“A delegation of officers has travelled to the United States to examine tanks in storage; we are departing on the premise of picking 400 of them,” he said.

“The only cost will be that of transport, which is estimated in the region of eight million euros ($11 million),” the spokesman added.

Ta Nea daily reported that the tanks, stored in Nevada, saw action in the 1990-1991 Gulf War and were first offered by the US government a year ago.

The state council on foreign policy and defence will have the final say on whether the offer is taken up, Sifakis said.

Greece is in the grip of a debt crisis that has forced the government to freeze procurement orders for tanks, frigates and fighter jets.

The country has traditionally been one of the world’s heaviest defence spenders per capita owing to decades of rivalry with neighbouring Turkey.

Greece has in the past bought tanks from Germany and there have been reports that Berlin has recently tried to sell updated versions of its Leopard model.

#3  Yeah, I'll bet Uncle Sam will also pay the shipping for these 'free' tanks.

Seems to me the American taxpayers that own these should give them to the Border Patrol. Not really mobile, but a hell of a center piece for an outpost.

#4  Ok, this may seem sort of dumb, but we bought 10,000 of these M1 tanks. We need like 1,000 now. That leaves 9,000 turbine powered, depleted uranium land yachts to care and feed. THAT WE DO NOT NEED TO DEFEND AMERICA. They cost us money every day. Greece is a good NATO ally. Let's just agree to help them out.

Frankly, if they petitioned to be a new state, I would advocate bringing them aboard the American enterprise, debts be damned.

Pak president's medical trip to Dubai sparks rumors
Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has traveled to Dubai for medical treatment, sparking rumors in Pakistan that the embattled leader may resign. His trip fueled speculation that he had a heart attack, but a spokesman for Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani called those reports as "speculative, imaginary and untrue."

The president is undergoing routine tests related to a previously diagnosed heart condition, according to his spokeswoman. A statement from Zardari's physician said, "Investigations carried out so far are essentially within normal range and the president's condition is stable."

Teenage girl dies in hospital shooting
[Dawn] Hot-blooded cousins killed an unrelated young girl when they opened fire inside the Holy Family Hospital (HFH) on Monday to settle a family feud over a second marriage.

Panic gripped the hospital visitors and staff as the shots rang out. Police said three brothers had injured their sister and a cousin in the feud in their house in Mandra, and then followed them to the hospital, who decamped after the shooting incident.

Bullets fired by them injured Raja Aqeel whose second marriage had enraged them, but caused fatal injuries to 13-year-old Fatima Amin, a resident of Khayaban-i-Sir Syed, who was waiting in a car outside the hospital for her ailing mother to come out.

"She was hit in the head and rushed to the operation theatre immediately. She was operated upon but did not survive and died late in the evening," Inspector Raja Qayoom, who is leading the police investigation, told Dawn.

Fatima lived with her mother while her father, Kamran Amin, works in Soddy Arabia. Police identified the brothers behind the shooting as Raja Omer, Raja Masood and Raja Atif, and the sister and cousin Omer injured in Mandra as Uzma and Raja Qasim.

Uzma is married to Raja Qasim`s brother while Raja Aqueel was said to be his brother-in-law. "Thank God, no hospital staff nor any patient was injured in the madness," sighed a HFH nurse.

But those caught in the frenzy that followed the shooting were found cursing the lack of security in the hospital which helped the shooters escape. Even the officials deployed at the hospital`s police post were unable to capture the fleeing gunnies.

According to the police, Raja Qasim and his brother`s wife Uzma were attacked and injured after Uzma`s brother Raja Omer opened fire on them at his house in Mandra on Monday morning. Police said Raja Omer and his brothers were annoyed with their cousin Raja Qasim over getting second marriage and they had warned him not to bring his second wife to their home otherwise he would be facing dire consequences.

Gates discusses nuclear reactor with China
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has confirmed he is in discussions with China to jointly develop a new and safer kind of nuclear reactor.

"The idea is to be very low cost, very safe and generate very little waste," said the billionaire during a talk at China's Ministry of Science and Technology on Wednesday.

Gates said he had largely funded a Washington state-based company, TerraPower, that is developing a Generation IV nuclear reactor that can run on depleted uranium. TerraPower says it has discussed its plans with India, Russia and other countries with nuclear energy programs.

The general manager of state-owned China National Nuclear Corporation (CNNC), Sun Qin, was quoted in Chinese media last week saying Gates was working with it to research and develop a reactor.

"TerraPower is having very good discussions with CNNC and various people in the Chinese government," said Gates, cautioning the talks were at an early stage.

Gates says perhaps as much as a billion dollars will be put into research and development over the next five years.

TerraPower says its travelling wave reactor would run for decades on depleted uranium and produce significantly smaller amounts of nuclear waste than conventional reactors.

"All these new designs are going to be incredibly safe," Gates told the audience. "They require no human action to remain safe at all times."

"It takes safety to a new level," he said.

#2  guojin mintui translates something like “while the state advances, the privates retreat.”.

They will take what they need from Gates and do it themselves. Uranium is just about to explode in value. We have been getting Uranium dirt cheap for years now from Russia but that has just stopped. One who posts here who cannot be named, no, I just forgot who it was. Has really been interested in Thorium power. We dropped the ball and I understand India has gone on and developed a system themselves. Much better system from the looks of it.
Posted by: Dale || 12/07/2011 19:37 Comments || Top||

#3  Gates is wrong headed on this. No one should support or advocate uranium based power. Thorium is so much less bad, we need innovation there. Not in uranium.

Uranium power inevitably produces Plutonium. Plutonium is properly named for the God of the Dead. Plutonium results in death. It is poisonous, radioactive, and suitable for nuclear weapons. Just about the worst trifecta in the history of man.

It is in the long term survival of the human project that we step away from uranium based power. It cannot happen today, but needs to happen over the longer term.

Minister's Bodyguards Assault Two Youths on Nahr al-Mot-Zalka Road
[An Nahar] Two bodyguards of a current minister assaulted a man and his sister on the Nahr al-Mot-Zalka road on Tuesday.

Witnesses told Naharnet that the assault took place when the bodyguards believed that the man had attempted to block the minister's car with his vehicle.

The bodyguards stepped out of the car of ministerial license plate 27, brandished their weapons against the two victims, Farid Jean al-Shaqti and his sister Stephie, and told them that they are members of the Tashnag party.
"We're feared throughout the land!"
The witnesses said that the guards threw Stephie on the ground as her brother attempted to protect her.

The dispute resulted in major traffic in the area.

In information obtained by Naharnet, the victims are seeking to file a complaint against the assailants.

Auction: Dinner for six with Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn
Enjoy an unforgettable and scintillating dinner for a party of six cooked by veteran activists and educators Bill Ayers and Bernardine Dohrn. Fascinating conversation over a meal is the agenda for this special evening.

William Ayers, Distinguished Professor of Education and Senior University Scholar at the University of Illinois at Chicago (retired), has written extensively about social justice, democracy and education, the cultural contexts of schooling and teaching as an essentially intellectual, ethical, and political enterprise. He is currently the vice-president of the curriculum studies division of the American Educational Research Association.

Bernardine Dorhn, Clinical Associate Professor of Law at Northwestern University and founder of the Children and Family Justice Center, is a child advocate who teaches, lectures and writes about children’s law, juvenile justice, the needs and rights of youth, and international human rights. With Steven A. Drizin, she is co-founder of the Center on the Wrongful Conviction of Youth.

Dinner will be arranged on a mutually agreed upon date before September 30, 2012. All sales are final.
