-Lurid Crime Tales-
Not The Sharpest Linguini In The Alfredo
A bumbling Bonanno bad guy bizarrely listed all of his contacts -- from capos to consiglieres -- in a Rolodex.

Not-so-wiseguy Mike “The Butcher” Virtuoso recorded every one of the names, numbers, nicknames and even mob titles in a file so complete that the FBI agents who stumbled on it felt like they’d discovered a gold mine.

The treasure trove was discovered in “The Butcher’s’’ butcher shop, Graham Avenue Meats & Deli, in Williamsburg. The meticulously detailed “Rolodexes” and “address books” listed contact information for “members and associates of organized crime,” according to the feds.

He didn’t even bother to code or otherwise try to disguise his entries.

“For example, a slip of paper within one Rolodex contained the handwritten entry ‘Capo Lucchese’ and the names ‘Johnny Sideburns Cerello’ and ‘Glenn the Wheel Guadagno,’ ” Assistant US Attorney Stephen Frank wrote to a judge.

“Both men are convicted felons associated with the Lucchese organized crime family, and John Cerrella, also known as ‘Johnny Sideburns,’ is a captain in that family,” Frank wrote.

Now the feds plan to use the Rolodexes and address books to prove that Virtuoso is an ex-con with the kind of mobbed-up friends who make him a serious danger to the community.

They want Judge Sandra Townes to deny the butcher’s bail request and keep him jailed as he awaits trial on extortion charges for allegedly threatening several debtors. A bail hearing is scheduled for today.

-Short Attention Span Theater-
Marathon runner hitched a bus ride to win race
[Emirates 24/7] A club runner in northern England has been stripped of his third-place finish in a local marathon after being caught hitching a ride on a spectator bus.

Rob Sloan initially described claims that he cheated in Sunday's Kielder Marathon near Newcastle as "laughable," but was forced to admit his transgression following an investigation.

Organizers say the 31-year-old former army mechanic dropped out of the race at the 20-mile mark, only to hop on a bus and emerge from woodland in the final stages to make the podium. His time was given as 2 hours, 51 minutes -- 21 minutes faster than his previous best in the race.

Dave Roberts, one of the marathon organizers, condemned Sloan on Wednesday, saying "it's as bad as drug-taking in my book."

Two new polio cases in KP
[Dawn] The National Institute of Health (NIH), Islamabad, has confirmed two more polio
...Poliomyelitis is a disease caused by infection with the poliovirus. Between 1840 and the 1950s, polio was a worldwide epidemic. Since the development of polio vaccines the disease has been largely wiped out in the civilized world. However, since the vaccine is known to make Moslem pee-pees shrink and renders females sterile, bookish, and unsubmissive it is not widely used by the turban and automatic weapons set...
cases in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa
... formerly NWFP, still Terrorism Central...
, said officials privy to the details.

They said that reports of the two cases from the NIH were received on Sunday. The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa now has 12 confirmed cases of polio this year so far.

The officials said that one-year-old Ilyas Shah, son of Ibrahim Shah, and a resident of Bashkata, Buner district, was tested positive for poliovirus. They said that the child had received seven doses of the oral polio vaccine.

This is the second polio case reported from Buner district this year.

They said that one and a half years old Ahad Noor, son of Noor Mohammad Din, was also tested positive for the polio in Nowshera district, the sources said and added that the child residing in Mohallah Yaqoob Garhi had also received seven doses of polio drops.

Bangladesh
Return people's money, Hasina asks Khaleda at rally
[Bangla Daily Star] Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina yesterday said opposition leader Khaleda Zia
Three-term PM of Bangla, widow of deceased dictator Ziaur Rahman, head of the Bangla Nationalist Party, an apparent magnet for corruption ...
and her two sons must return the people's money they "siphoned off, including the money they took from orphans".

She vowed to bring Khaleda, the BNP chairperson, and her two sons, Tarique Rahman and Arafat Rahman Koko, to book on corruption charges they are currently facing. Khaleda and Tarique are also accused in the Zia Orphanage scam case.

"You [Khaleda] have misappropriated the money of the Zia Orphanage Trust and your two sons siphoned off hundreds of crores of taka of people's money when you were in power. You have whitened the black money," Hasina accused her political archrival.

"Their trial will definitely be held," she said, addressing a huge rally at Nilphamari Govt High School ground.

Hasina, who was the chief guest at the meeting, made the remark responding to Khaleda Zia's recent statement in a rally in Sylhet where Khaleda said they would construct Padma Bridge free of corruption if voted to power.

Hasina said the opposition leader flanked by war criminals has now been forging movements to save the war criminals and her two corrupt sons.

The prime minister said the rightful share of Teesta water will be realised from India. "Discussion is going on Teesta water sharing. Insha Allah, we will be able to realise the rightful share of Teesta water from India like the Ganga water sharing deal."

Nilphamari district Awami League organised the rally which thousands joined. Party leaders, workers, and supporters of the party from different upazilas and adjacent districts started pouring in since noon to join the meeting considered a counter programme to the opposition's anti-government agitations.

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad, acting General Secretary of Awami League Mahbubul Alam Hanif, politicians Asaduzzaman Noor and Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury also spoke at the rally chaired by district Awami League president Dewan Kamal Ahmed.

Hinting the abolishment of the caretaker system, Hasina said the constitution has been amended to protect the people's democratic right of franchise.

Hasina said Khaleda questioned her religion after she visited the Dhakeswari temple during the Durga Puja festivities. Hasina said she prays five times a day and unlike Khaleda's, her day starts with Fazr prayers in the morning and not around noon.

Referring to last BNP-Jamaat coalition rule, the prime minister said that Ziaur Rahman only left a broken suitcase and a torn T-shirt for his family. But that broken suitcase has become a magic box and Khaleda Zia amassed crores and is now living a luxurious life.

Hasina said the present government has rooted out terrorism from the country. She claimed that when people live in peace the opposition leader feels uncomfortable.

Economy
Wal-Mart Ends "Green" Products and Sees Customers Return
Ending eight consecutive quarters of losses, Wal-Mart is about to announce that customers are returning to the retail giant.

If so, this will be a vindication for Wal-Mart executives who last April put an end to a five year liberal left experiment to inject pricey "green" and politically correct products into the stores.

Out went the low cost jeans. In came holistic and organic foods, environmentally "natural" clothing and so-called fair trade products. Of course all of these products cost more.

And in droves Wal-Mart's customers fled for the exits.

As I quoted an ex-Wal-Mart executive in a posting last April:

"The basic Wal-Mart customer didn't leave Wal-Mart. What happened is that Wal-Mart left the customer."

The genius behind the Wal-Mart "green" makeover was former Al Gore communications director Leslie Dach. He brought in environmentalists, ecologists and liberal economists. They convinced the company to sell according to their preconceived ideas of justice, not to market needs.

The result was a disaster . But last April Wal-Mart changed course and inaugurated a "Back to Basics" campaign. They informed poor and middle class consumers that the affordable stuff like cheap jeans and food were back.

Yesterday Wal-Mart executives told financial analysts the company will break eight consecutive quarters of loss and finally see a rise in same store sales. And this during a recession.

As the Wall Street Journal reported this morning:

"comparable store sales at U.S. Wal-Mart stores have been positive for the past three months, leaving Wal-Mart on track to report an end to its domestic slump."

The three month period perfectly tracks the "Back to Basics" turnabout.

It's interesting when you listen to the market.
It is amazing what happens when you stop listening to the leftist shrill shriekers.

Not just Solyndra
h/t Instapundit
With the Solyndra scandal still swirling, the Obama administration is under pressure to reveal the financial condition of the solar companies that received $4.75 billion in similar federal loan guarantees on the last day of the program.
Is there anyone who (clearly having fallen from the back of the turnip truck last night) thought that Solyndra was an isolated case?
Republican lawmakers on two House committees are seeking details about the loans given to First Solar, SunPower Corp. and ProLogis. Of those three companies, troubling financial revelations have emerged about SunPower, which received a $1.2 billion loan, more than twice the money approved for Solyndra, which filed for bankruptcy last month after receiving a $528 million loan.
It's in a good cause

#2  This story has a long tail. I would suggest looking at solar power history. This is not something new.In my opinion of course. An old story I would tell to children. American Indians would hunt beaver. They first would put the traps out baited but not set. The beaver helped themselves. So after a time, with no fear, the beaver took what they wanted. The traps then were set and the catch was very productive.

#6  the question for the average homeowner is simple, define the capital outlay cost, minus the tax credit, define the savings throughout the economic life of the system, define the savings from not using the public utility power, and decide based on net cost.

Every time I have done that, it doesn't work!

Europe
Ukraine Tries to Limit Tymoshenko Damage
[An Nahar] Ukraine on Wednesday attempted to contain the damage caused to its image and diplomatic ties after both the West and Russia angrily condemned the jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

A Kiev court on Tuesday jugged the leader of the pro-Western 2004 Orange Revolution for seven years, prompting allegations that President Viktor Yanukovych was resorting to Stalinist methods to deal with opponents.

The jailing of Tymoshenko for abusing her powers in a gas deal signed with Russia in 2009 -- an offence that would not have even come to a criminal court in Europe -- has also endangered Ukraine's hopes of EU integration.

Foreign Minister Kostyantyn Gryshchenko defiantly rejected criticism that the trial was politically motivated, saying Tymoshenko "was not prosecuted for her political beliefs but specific actions violating Ukraine legislation."

"Nobody should be above the law," he told news hounds on a trip to Estonia.

But Yanukovych has also emphasized the court's decision was not final and his Regions Party has hinted that possible changes in the law to decriminalize the articles under which Tymoshenko was condemned could resolve the crisis.

Gryshchenko acknowledged that it was "important for Ukraine to have very serious reform of the judicial and legal system" although he said he was not referring to a specific case.

Top Yanukovych advisor Anna German told Channel 5 in an interview that "we need to take lessons from what has happened and reform our laws so that similar situations are not so painful for Ukraine."

Pro-Tymoshenko MPs in the Ukrainian parliament have said they will put forward a proposal to decriminalize the article in the criminal code when it resumes sitting next week.

The Regions Party of Yanukovych, which holds the majority in the Verkhovna Rada, has said that it could support such a move, although it has yet to take any concrete decision. Yanukovych is due to visit Brussels on October 20.

#2  To say politics in Ukraine is complex is an understatement.

Viktor Yanukovych, the current leader, is the Ukraine's equivalent to Obama, with an undocumented academic past. His party is mostly supported by the Russian speaking half of Ukraine, and tends to pan-Slavophilism and authoritarianism.

Yulia Tymoshenko and her parties are associated both with Ukraine's 'Orange Revolution' against authoritarianism and pan-Slavophilism and Russian alignment, preferring Europe and possibly NATO. But at the same time she was willing to do some profitable capitalism with Russia, which made them smile on her.

What recently rattled Ukraine to the bone was that they were very hard hit with a severe and lethal form of H1N1 influenza that threw their country into a blind panic. Even their medical community was freaking out as the lung damage from the disease was terrifying. Lungs coal black at autopsy.

Which of course created massive political distress as well.

Great White North
Canadian BP To Block Entrance To Known American Agitators Heading North
A Canadian border alert has been issued to prevent hard-core U.S. protesters from crossing the border to take part in marches and an occupation of the country's financial centres on Saturday.

Officials have circulated the identities, descriptions and criminal records of hundreds of U.S. protesters to front-line officers at border crossings, asking them to be alert.

Police spokesman Mark Pugash said contingency plans are being drawn up for the event.

"Our primary goal is that of public safety and facilitating a peaceful protest," Pugash said.

Officials of the Canada Border Services Agency refused to speak about their security precautions. Border officers said many of those being turned back have been involved in previous protests and have a history with U.S. police.

Police said they expect several hundred protesters from the U.S. and Europe to show up at the Canadian events to show their support.

A group calling itself Occupy Toronto Market Exchange has launched a website to organize a march and events on Bay St. starting on Oct. 15. So far, more than 8,400 people have viewed the site that contains events that will be taking place in Toronto until Christmas Day.

Occupations are also planned for the streets of Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary, the organizers said.

Dupe URL: AF Chief Lauds General Who Fought White House
September 22, 2011
The Air Force 4-star who reportedly told a Congressional committee that the White House attempted to alter his testimony on the potential threat of a system of new 4G broadcast towers was "saluted" Wednesday by the Air Force Chief of Staff.

Gen. Will Shelton, commander of Air Force Space Command, testified to Congress recently on the military's official concerns that 40,000 broadcast towers proposed for construction by LightSquared could wreak havoc with the existing GPS receivers.

Recent media reports allege that LightSquared benefitted from close contacts within the White House to create a nationwide broadband internet network and that administration officials pressured Shelton to downplay the network's potential impact on disrupting military operations.

During a forum of senior officers at the Air Force Association conference in Washington on Wednesday, the moderator complimented Shelton for giving his "unvarnished" testimony before Congress.

The applause of hundreds of Airmen and others broke out, interrupted only when Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz interrupted to make a comment of his own.

Schwartz acknowledged Shelton's candid testimony in the face of the purported White House pressure.

"Will Shelton, I salute your courage."

The White House has reportedly said it offered only guidance to Shelton. Meanwhile, the House Science, Space and Technology Committee has launched an investigation into contacts between administration officials and LightSquared, according to the website NextGov.com.

The committee's chairman Rep. Ralph Hall, R-Texas, and the six other Republican lawmakers allege the administration sought to muzzle and soften the testimony Shelton and other experts on how the planned multibillion-dollar network could interfere with GPS receivers, according to the report.

Zombie Muhammad? Atheist attacked by Muslim during Halloween parade
Tuesday, an Atheist wearing a "Zombie Muhammad" costume while marching in a local Pennsylvania Halloween parade was attacked by a Muslim.
According to reports, the Parading Atheists of Central Pennsylvania (PACP) were marching in a Halloween parade in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, when a Muslim stormed out of the hometown crowd to assault one of the marching atheists who happened to be wearing a Zombie Muhammad costume.

The atheist in the Zombie Muhammad costume was proclaiming that he was the Prophet Muhammad, risen from the dead. Apparently the words and costume offended a Muslim man, who came out of the audience and began to follow and harass the atheist dressed as Zombie Muhammad before actually choking the atheist.

Subsequently, a police report was filed, and charges in the matter are pending.

The victim posted a video of the incident to YouTube. In the video description the victim writes:
Oct 11 2011 in the Machanicsburg City Parade I was attacked by a violent muslim IN AMERICA! This is proof that muslims want Shria Law in America. He attacks me to pull my beard off so he could identify me and chokes me.

I understand many will say I deserved it, but no one has the right to abridge my freedom of speech and violence is never the answer to freedom of speech. Islam is a religion of Peace? not the case here.

#4  One Halloween I made a "Masque of the Red Death" costume, including a black screen face mask. Unfortunately, the local pious Catholic Mexicans seemed to not be able to distinguish the difference between me and a Cardinal, I guess.

Rather mortifying to see people making the sign of the cross at you in the middle of a street party, surrounded by Elvises (pl.), space aliens, harlots, some really big guys dressed as Conan the Barbarian-era style barbarians, more harlots, boucoup zombies, lots o' vampires, drunken harlots, and one guy who was wearing the complete, formal US Cavalry dress uniform, which is pretty damn gaudy.
