"Here you have" hacker denies being negative
A hacker named Iraq Resistance said he made the "Here you have" worm so people can hear his voice. He said he is not a negative person because he did not smash infected computers.
Smash? Is that ability now available at a distance? I really must work harder to keep up.
The "Here you have" worm recently attacked computers around the world with spam e-mails. Iraq Resistance criticised the U.S. war in Iraq and posted a whiny video using a computer-generated voice on Sunday. He said that his action was not as bad as that of Terry Jones, the controversial, Koran-threatening pastor.
But in the end Pastor Jones didn't do anything, and promised to continue not doing anything in the future.
The "Here you have" sent from 6 percent to 14 percent of Internet spam on Thursday affecting Disney, Procter & Gamble, Wells Fargo, and NASA. The worm has a password logging software and a backdoor program that could have allowed Iraq Resistance to control infected computers. The worm, however, was shut down when the Web servers it used to infect machines were also shut down.

SecureWorks researcher Joe Stewart speculated that Iraq Resistance is Libyan and is trying to recruit hackers for a cyber jihad group called Brigades of Tariq ibn Ziyad, the 8th century Muslim commander who conquered much of Spain for the Ummayad Caliphate. Stewart also said that Iraq Resistance may be based in Al-Andalus Spain because of the Spanish theme of the hacker's video.

Two Gun-Carrying Neighbors Save Women From Dog Attack
Two women were still recovering Saturday after a vicious dog attack the morning before that didn't end until neighbors shot the dogs.

About 6 a.m. Friday, three loose dogs attacked 52-year-old Janelle Dalson, who was jogging through her neighborhood. The woman's screams woke one neighbor, who came outside to find her fending off the three dogs, which collectively weighed nearly 300 pounds.

"They actually had her body up off the ground, and they were trying to rend her apart."

Fortunately, her neighbor came out of his house armed with his Walther PPK Handgun. He shot the lead dog in the head, but the other two dogs continued their assault, and his gun jammed.

Just then, two other women came running up the street and the two dogs went after them. One of the women was pregnant, who was attacked.

Another neighbor came outside armed with a handgun, and shot the two dogs before they could seriously hurt the pregnant woman.

The lead dog, a bull mastiff has since been destroyed and the two others - which are pit bull - mastiff mixes - will likely soon follow. Police were investigating the attack Saturday and requested the Solano County district attorney's office file charges against the dog owners for allowing vicious animals to run free.

Dalson remained hospitalized Saturday, reportedly facing some paralysis because of the attack, which could end her career as a dental hygienist.

#1  "But my bull mastiff is a gentle heart! He'd never hurt a soul! Look how kind his eyes are, and he's so good with children."

Yeah, because the dog knows you and thinks you're the leader of the pack. Others don't get that consideration and may be considered prey.

#2  Very nice "head shot" at any range with a Walther. Might wish to check the ammo regarding the jamming. What say you Ceser Millan?

#3  Yeah, James Bond's gun isn't supposed to jam.
Posted by: gromky || 09/13/2010 4:12 Comments || Top||

#4  I don't know much about guns so here is my question: If the lead dog was shot in the head, presumabably at close range (I'm assuming that the neighbour ran in close before firing so to be sure to not miss and accidently hit the woman being attacked), why was it necessary to 'destroy' (which I take to mean kill) the dog later? Wouldn't the shot to the head pretty much do the job. The other 2 dogs also seem to have survived the shooting....

#5  Bone is more resilient than you think, and while there are some very effective .380 ACP loads, keep in mind that a .380 is a less powerful round than the typical 9x19mm used by alot of military pistols.

This is a WAG, but it sounds to me as if the first man with the Walther PPK owns it, bought ammo for it but basically has not taken the proper steps to train himself in it's use.

Simple jam clearing consists of three steps, tap the magazine to ensure it's properly seated, rack the slide to eject the jammed or failed round, ready to fire. Secondary clearing, if the previous fails is to lock the slide back, drop the magazine, rack the slide a few times to clear the obstruction, reload.

So likely the first dog was merely incapacitated, which is actually fine, the man stopped that attacker, the other two were hit in some non-immediately fatal part of their body. Guns are not magic death rays and people have survived being shot multiple times, so the fact they didn't die isn't that surprising.

Bit long winded there, but hopefully that sheds some light.

#6  I think that the word "destroyed" is a funny one when applied to living dogs and probably means at the end of the attack they were all dead with the corpse of the lead dog already incinerated by the time the article was written.

For clearing the pistol I think that it is bad idea when you have two angry dogs near you and the guy was probably very close because it is difficult to hit anything with a pistol at more than 10 yards
Posted by: JFM || 09/13/2010 8:27 Comments || Top||

#7  Silentbrick: Let me heartily endorse what you said. In a situation like that, I would prefer a substantial bladed weapon to most handguns, purely for tactical reasons and to insure a quick take down of the dogs. A machete with a wrist loop would be close to ideal--with a gun back up.

One good swipe, and the dog wouldn't have hind feet, since they are focused on their victim. Without feet, they are done.

It's a mistake to focus on the heavily "armored" head at first. If they can't walk, maneuver, or attack, you can move on to the next one.

A wise man once told me that you shouldn't count on any gun for self-defense until you've but hundreds of rounds through it, and shouldn't count on any particular type of ammunition until you've put at least a hundred rounds of it through the gun.

#10  chemist: have you ever seen the size of a pit bull or bull mastiffs head? and being limp wristed with a pistol can cause it too jam. Happens alot with bigger models like the desert eagle 50. but I don't know why anyone with be limp wristed with a 380
Posted by: chris || 09/13/2010 11:27 Comments || Top||

#11  .380 ACP's are some what well known for being VERY ammunition picky. That's one reason why you have to fire a number of brands to find one that your weapon feeds consistently.

Without taking the time or money to figure that out, then someone is little better than completely untrained and surviving any sort of violent encounter is very much luck on their part.

#13  An axe-handle strike across the spine with 150-200lbs of force behind it will usually put most dogs out of action. Don't aim for the head, aim for the spine. As for a pistol, the best shot is into the chest or spine. Not many animals will keep fighting with a severed spine. If you're quick enough, and have no other defenses, a sharp blow with a fist to the nose or top of the head with every ounce of force you can muster will also usually put an end to most man-dog encounters. Does NOT work with very large dogs - you'll lose a hand. In an attack by a three-dog pack, kicking is NOT a winning situation.

US Military Pit Crew disassembles and reassembles a GP in well under four minutes
Short video at link.

For those who might not know, the name Jeep comes from G.P., or "General Purpose" vehicle. It went from inspiration to production in about a month or two.

Try doing this with a hummer!

I'm having deja vu when I see how complicated a hummer is compared to a jeep, and I think about German tanks vs. American or Russian. Sometimes quantity and/or simplicity wins.

US gov't study: No link found between vaccines and autism
Not for thimerosol, not for MMR.

But we're up to 1 out of 110 kids with autism now.

Keep looking!
Posted by: gorb || 09/13/2010 13:33 || Comments || Link || [0 views] Top|| File under:

#1  Some of the surge in autism has to be due to assortative mating -- "Assortative mating among computer scientists with Asperger syndrome is thought to account for the stratospheric rise in juvenile autism spectrum disorders in Silicon Valley."
Some of it will probably turn out to be due to environmental toxins and infections that are new to the people in the last 100-150 years. You could consider a vaccine as an environmental toxin / infection, but there are so many other possible things in that category.

I think its due to dihydrogen monoxide. Must be. In each and every case the subject was exposed to dihydrogen monoxide over a long period of time - even to the point of consumption.

That dihydrogen monoxide is deadly stuff. People die from it every day.

#5  It might well be that the results of bad parenting - children who act up - are being mis-diagnosed as autism. Why has there been such an epidemic of bad parenting in the past few decades? Probably a turn away from corporal punishment, which is now a crime in a lot of states.

Posted by: Anguper Hupomosing9418 || 09/13/2010 14:12 Comments || Top||

#7  From almost the start, a correlation was noted that autistic children seem to come from highly intelligent parents, and two highly intelligent parents are definitely at risk for having an autistic child.

This theory was disputed for a while, because of many average intelligence parents having autistic children, until it was discerned that in *their* case, it was likely because of "fragile X syndrome".

Fragile X is caused by the human species starting to 'shed' some chromosomes that it doesn't need, which we may have done before. Adding or deleting chromosomes seems to be a fairly common thing in lifeforms.

In any event, there is a suspicion that "rational intelligence", as we think of it, is actually a mutation, and an unstable one at that. This is supported by people with Ausperger's syndrome, the mildest form of autism, who are often very intelligent, but somewhat handicapped in other ways.

Posted by: Sgt. D.T. || 09/13/2010 15:01 Comments || Top||

#9  It might well be that the results of bad parenting

Impossible. Multidisciplinary teams evaluate each child on an educational basis, and they aren't inclined to give a diagnosis of educational-autism unless it's really bad because it's so expensive for the system.

To get a medical diagnosis of autism the kid has to take a bunch of tests to evaluate performance, and just showing up as a brat won't cut it.

#10  Is Jennie McCarthy really highly intelligent ...who knew?

Posted by: gorb || 09/13/2010 15:35 Comments || Top||

#11  In most cases of Autism - the kids don't 'act up'.

Its just the opposite - they don't 'engage' at all - they are often off in their 'own little world' - may be staring off into space or playing with toys oblivious to the world around them.

Gorb is right - its evaluated by a Multidisciplinary teams involving a range of test (including physical development and coordination) and interviews with the parents (Does he make vocal noises? speak words? When did he start? Does he understand the words or simply parrot them? Does he play alone or with others? etc...

And of course the hearing tests, blood tests, etc...

Been there. Done that. It is not fun.

#16  I have a brother who is deaf and has Ausperger syndrome, and a daughter who has Down syndrome. While I don't claim to be an expert in either syndrome (I've met actual experts), I do have a fair amount of "hands on" experience. Here's what I know:

1) My father was a college professor, my mother is a practicing dentist. So we (my brother and I) had intelligent parents just like Anon said. However, my brother's Ausperger syndrome may or may not have been a result of my mother contracting rubella in premed (though his deafness certainly was). No way to know.

2) My daughter's condition is probably a result of having an older mother. Or maybe not. Down syndrome is kind of just "one of those things." There was a 1 in 60 chance for us, and we rolled a sixty on the giant polyhedral dice of life.

3) My brother's IQ is roughly 140. My daughter's is (I believe) somewhere 70 and 90.

4) Honestly, I think my brother is worse off. Sure, he has two college degrees... but he still lives with Mom, has never had a job, and doesn't have any friends that I know of. It's possible that my daughter will go to college (more and more people with Down syndrome do), but regardless she is extroverted, highly social, and easygoing. I think she'll do OK as an adult.

5) When my child was born and I was all broken up about her condition, a friend of mine who has a son who is severely autistic came to visit. She said to me "Ha! Stop complaining: your child has the Cadillac of syndromes!" And she had a point.

6)Philosophically, I'm not really sure what the general increase in genetic syndromes means. It may just mean that with modern medicine more of our "mutant" babies are staying alive. It may mean that we are struggling toward another evolutionary stage.

It may mean that God is testing an otherwise decadent West. After all, how we treat these people says a lot about ourselves as a civilization.

#17  SM Honestly, I think my brother is worse off. Sure, he has two college degrees... but he still lives with Mom, has never had a job, and doesn't have any friends that I know of

I know of two people who hold jobs who has Aspergers. One has difficulty in her job. The other seems to be able to do her job very well. Both seem to be stunted socially. Social relationships are very difficult and stressful for both. One woman has two very bright parents. I don't know much about the other woman's family background other than there is not much support and family seems dysfunctional. Both seem to go into an emotional tizzy about things that are somewhat trivial to the rest of us. One seems to be very OCD. She will call and leave a message and almost always call two minutes later and leave basically the same message. One is 50+ and still lives at home with a fairly arranged structured life. If she strays too far away from that structure, it causes her problems. The other one lives by herself but has problems at work, with neighbors, and with her family.

#18  Aspergers is sometimes called "super-nerd syndrome", if that helps any. I'm quite certain assortive mating has something to do with the noted increase -- people who once would have hidden in the basement are able to have careers and meet one another on-line, where they don't have to deal with all that interpersonal stuff.

As for the rest, Temple Grandin (she of the four PhDs, psychology professorship, and designer of humane slaughter houses) was nearly institutionalized as a small child for mental retardation. No doubt that's where most of those now receiving the diagnosis used to end up.

Britain
Over 100 British artists join campaign against funding cuts
(Xinhua) -- Over 100 leading British artists have joined the campaign against the proposed 25-percent cuts in government funding of their meal tickets the arts on Saturday.

Supporters of the artists' campaign will be asked to sign a petition which will be sent to Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt.
The Ministry of Funny Walks having taken heavy cuts itself...
The petition points out that it has taken 50 years to create a vibrant arts culture in Britain that is the envy of the world, and appeals to the government not to slash arts funding. It warns the government of risking destroying this long-term achievement and the social and economic benefits it brings to all.
For decoration?!? I don't think so; when Rembrandt and his crew where making waves in the Netherlands, they were able to make a decent living strictly from private sales. Likewise several generations of artists in Renaissance Italy, Regency England... the list goes on and on. Bottom line, if an artist needs a government subsidy, it's a clear sign he's not good enough to make it on his own.
The artists acknowledge that reasonable cuts and efficiencies are necessary
but on someone else please. Perhaps the military?
but they fear that the 25-percent cuts being proposed will destroy much of what has been achieved and will have a particularly damaging impact on national and regional museums and their collections.
The museums already have collections, generally considerably more than they have room to display. Without government subsidies distorting the market, they'll be able to afford the few truly good pieces they need to update their catalogs... and if necessary they can sell off some of their less remarkable pieces to decorate bourgeois living rooms, leading to improved lives for all involved.
Robert Dufton, Paul Hamlyn Foundation director, said: "We are pleased to support this campaign and hope that its message is taken on board. As independent funder of the arts we are aware of the effect that cuts will have on many of the organizations we support. We stand to lose a great deal as a society if arts organizations are forced to stop the very valuable work they do."
Because supporting the mediocre, who would benefit psychologically as well as financially from being forced into professions for which they are eminently more suited, is the primary function of any civilized society.
The campaign is being organized by the London branch of a national consortium of over 2,000 arts organizations and artists dedicated to working together and finding new ways to support the arts in Britain.
Given that your government is nearly bankrupt, y'all might want to get on with finding new ways to support, as well as narrowing the list of those you are willing to work for.
Artists joined the campaign including David Hockney, Damien Hirst, Anthony Caro, Howard Hodgkin, Anish Kapoor, Richard Hamilton, Bridget Riley, Antony Gormley and Tracey Emin.
Really, I must pay more attention. I haven't any idea who these people are. Perhaps if Mr Mondrian were among their number, I'd be more impressed.

#1  Do a Google Image Search on some of these names. These people are government supported? Amazing. Actually it's not amazing, nobody would support them otherwise.

#2  Arts funding = Welfare for the unemployable children of the rich

And an anecdote on what happens to publicly funded arts that happens to have market value.

At the bottom of my street in the UK (when I was a kid) was the local library, which had a small garden area to the side and in the middle of this was a Henry Moore sculpture.

No one ever used to go there, which was probably why me and my friends used to hang out there likely plotting our next piece of mischief.

Henry Moore sculptures are valuable, even in those days worth thousands of pounds, and one night someone backed a truck with a crane up to the garden. Lifted the sculpture, which to my knowledge was never seen again.

#3  Best publicity possible to maximise support for reducing "Arts" funded by extortion.
Posted by: Bright Pebbles || 09/13/2010 6:35 Comments || Top||

#4  In Oklahoma, our glorious legislature has seen fit to subsidizing the arts by mandating one percent of the value of any construction project to be set aside for the incorporation of art.

The mandate at the time was placed firmly in the "Seemed like a good idea at the time" rubric, but now, in the era of falling revenues, has moved over pretty solidly to the "What the hell were we thinking" department.

I understand the need for arts funding. It is a subsidy to keep all those crappy artists and their art at bay and to prevent said artists from hitting the rich up for their rent.

The leftist artist should be careful, the alternative may be a Goya painting....March 30, 1746: Francisco Goya, Spanish painter, was born. A romantic painter and printmaker regarded both as the last of the Old Masters and as the first of the moderns, Goya was a court painter to the Spanish Crown and a chronicler of history and political oppression. "The subversive and subjective element in his art, as well as his bold handling of paint, provided a model for the work of later generations of artists, notably Manet and Picasso

#8  One question always comes to mind when people (politicians) want to publicly fund artists, musicians, writers, etc. To wit: are we more culturally attuned now, than before the public expenditure(s)?? Just askin'.

#9  I haven't any idea who these people are.

I've heard of Tracey Emin. Her great work, "Everyone I Have Ever Slept With" -- a tent appliqueed with the names of, well, guess -- was tragically destroyed in a fire. Another "work" was "My Bed", in which she exhibited...her bed.

Her first public artwork, for which she was paid some staggering sum, was a little bronze bird sitting on top of a tall pole. It's designed so that the bird is hard to see, and according to Emin, "represents strength and femininity." In her defense, the bird did look like an actual bird.

Cuba to "transfer" half a million jobs to private sector
Maybe Castro was kidding about having made a mistake when he said the Cuban economic model wasn't working?

I don't think we'll be seeing much more of him. His brain has degenerated with age to the point where he is telling the truth.

Chinese resistance to mass vaccinations reveals mistrust at many levels
Looks like the Chinese don't treat even their own well, either.

Are we testing their products before they get off the dock yet?

Friends of ours got back from an assignment in Beijing a few years ago. While there, they had all their meds brought over from the U.S. She explained to me that, even as ex-pats with access to the best private doctors, the medicines available over there were most likely either coloured saline solution or dangerous. She wasn't willing to take that risk with her life or those of her children.

The Grand Turk
Turkey votes 'yes' to amending military-era constitution
Turks approved sweeping changes to their military-era constitution Sunday — a referendum hailed by the government as a leap toward full democracy in line with its troubled bid to join the European Union.

With 99 per cent of the vote counted, 58 per cent had cast ballots in favor of the constitutional amendments, state-run TRT television said. About 42 per cent voted “no,” heeding opposition claims that the reforms would shackle the independence of the courts.

The referendum on 26 amendments to a constitution that was crafted after a 1980 military coup has become a battleground between the Islamic-oriented government and traditional power elites that believe Turkey's secular principles are under threat. The outcome will set the stage for elections next year in a strategically located NATO ally whose regional clout has surged in recent years.

Rantburg translation : Trillions in long-term structural debt is reserved for graft, kickbacks, and paybacks. The creators of wealth have no need to use it for their interests. We have power and a party to maintain.
